Another 2 in the books.
I’ve always had mixed feelings about Nick Cave, but since this was before his solo stuff, I went into it with an open mind. My mind closed quickly.
This is a cool album because it commits so hard to being weird and discordant. And sometimes, that weirdness creates something really cool. But only sometimes, with half of this album being kinda annoying. But the other half is really cool to me.
Please, no more Nick Cave, I'm begging you.
I always know my day is going to suck when I get an album like this
BLAST OFF!! 1001 Albums Generator 360 (9/29/2026) We've gotten 3 of the lowest rated albums on this site in the last couple weeks: Duck Stab/Buster & Glen (2/5), Kollaps (2/5), and this one. Junkyard is by far my favorite out of these three because it's the most musical. And I actually enjoy some early Swans, which parts of this album really remind me of. That said, this is definitely not an album for everyone. Nick Cave's voice is what it is, and the instrumental in the background can be at times chaotic, in a kind of similar way to free jazz, but with a punky sheen on it. It's crazy that this guy would go on to make The Boatman's Call. Honestly, a perfectly fine album. 3/5. Favs: Blast Off Hamlet (Pow Pow Pow) Big-Jesus-Trash-Can Least Fav: Kiss Me Black
I knew that Nick Cave was involved, coming into this and was looking forward ot it on that basis. Unfortunately, I found it a little bit of a mixed bag! There's some really good moments, usually when it was slow and moody like She's Hit or Several Sins, which has shades of some of QOTSA weird bluesier moments. When it got faster and noisier, I tended to check out. There's definitely something here but as a whole album I struggled with it with just the one listen. I may return because it's Nick Cave.
Well this certainly isn't an easy listen is it? I suppose that's kind of the point, this is meant to be uncomfortable and dark. The wailing vocals are foreboding musical atmosphere seem delibeate. Interesting to hear the band where Nick Cave started his career as I've not listened to The birthday Party before, but I probably won't again
No me gusto en general
1/5 one of the worst
Sounding like it was recorded in the bathroom of a condemned car dealership, the artistic design decisions behind this album chafe me. Half of it is Nick Cave doing his Nick Cave thing one room over, the other half is aggressively abrasive guitar noisery mixed in the most infuriating way possible. I would probably love this if I were at some dingy basement show, but this experience kind of sucks.
music is love
Absolutely terrible. Zero redeeming qualities.
Gotta be in the mood for this. And I wasn't in the mood. Every time I tried to listen to this album, I kept getting interrupted, and it took forever to get through. Felt like purgatory.
Genuinely a lot of fun. I get why many people might not enjoy this but this works for me.
Sometimes Nick Cave's music speaks to my soul, other times it bores me. I didn't find much to love or much to hate in this album, but I can see what other folks do. Favorite song: Release the Bats
really cool
This album had a variety of song genres. Mostly a party type music well mixed.

Nick Cave doing everything in his power to ruin this and he succeeds.
I definitely feel like I could be quite into this record. On this particular day, my brain really needed some more consonant harmony and predictable rhythms and less abrasive noise. I think actually I might have to be in quite a specific mood to enjoy this. But when I'm in that mood I expect it will sound pretty cool.
Bit of a hatchet job this one. I was pretty excited once I read up on what this album is, but it is one of those spins that really isn’t available on my part of the world. Even the you tube full album setlist was listed as “unavailable” a first for that particular barrier. I finally cobbled it together from bits and pieces. It isn’t perhaps at the leave of Nick Cave’s peak albums, but I was very charmed by the diy tone and it reminded me of albums my friends have made. Imperfect but all that much the better for it. A couple did tracks, but some sly grooves in the mix. Too bad it’s so hard to listen to.
Nick cave is not my thing but this was the best thing I've heard from the gentleman.
Noisy and dumb
Fy fan vad detta var jobbigt att lyssna på. Gillar Nick Cave ensam eller med Bad Seeds men detta var hemskt.
I want to like this more than I do, might try a couple more listens to see if I can connect with it
I’m not gonna give this a 1/5 because Nick Cave still pulls a lot off with his vocals, but most everything else about this album is too hazy. It’s definitely not something you *should* listen to. The album artwork is more compelling than its musical content. “Dead Joe” was fun for how crazy it was. “Several Sins” was the best song imo. 2/5 pretty hectic
picks: she's hit, junkyard
Didn’t hate it as much as I thought but I didn’t enjoy it either. Appreciate the cathartic energy but I would prefer more fully formed songs. This is somewhere between 2 and 3 for me.
A bit hit or miss. More miss than hit.
Cacophonous mess. Could not finish
This album sounds like it looks
Pas mon genre pentoute
Je payerais cher pour retourner dans le temps et les voir en show. Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Rowland S. Howard...
Mon beau Nick... que je crois plus aimer dans son époque crooner que punk. Content d'avoir découvert cet album bien agressant.
The only redeeming quality of this mess was the cover artwork by Ed Roth. I skipped through the majority of the songs after about a minute to a minute and a half. The only song I found even tolerable was 4 Hours. This was very nearly a 1 rating for me. However, the first 20 to 30 seconds of a few songs showed some promise, at least until Nick Cave started singing. This is 20 minutes of my life I won’t get back. Giving it a 2 solely because of Ed Roth’s contribution to the album cover artwork.
Weird, slow noise-punk album. This is not good punk like Minor Threat, Siouxsie And The Banshees, or The Germs. The lead singer was dogshit and kept droning on and the song structure was untraditional and disjointed, to say the least. Not a single song was good, fun, or otherwise pleasant to listen to. Got curious as to why this was on here, and lo and behold, the lead singer is Nick Cave, no wonder I hated it. I have no idea who started the “Nick Cave is soooo good” circle jerk among music critics, but it’s gotta stop, because he sucks donkey dick at making listenable music. I am blowing out the candles on The Birthday Party; this album will be my twenty-third 1/5.
Onpa hyvä etten ole kuullut tätä koskaan ennen, toivottavasti en kuule enää uudestaan. Todella huono. 1/5
I didn’t know there was anything out there that approximated “avant-garde rockabilly”... or maybe "avant-garde gothabilly"? Either way, now that I know it, I can never un-know it. It's going to be off-putting for A LOT of people, but it fills a void in the music landscape that I hadn't fully realized was there for me. I probably can't listen to this all the time, but I know I will listen to it again, and more often than most people would. It's a perfect mid-October record to jumpstart spooky season stuff. I have pretty indifferent feelings about Nick Cave, but I'm thrilled to 'discover' this band/album and have it in my life now. My opinion of Nick is now marginally higher for having been a part of this.
This album feels like it wants to be Joy Division's *Closer*, only louder and angrier. It succeeds at the latter part of that formulation; the low-fi production fits the emotional aesthetic of the music perfectly, especially as the songs frequently sputter to a stop (much like the evil hot rod on the album cover must do frequently). But the great secret of Joy Division lay in Ian Curtis's ability to write songs about lurid subjects without becoming exploitative; here, by contrast, Nick Cave too often feels like he's sneering at the people he sings about. And yes, the over-the-top approach is a valid aesthetic choice, but it limits the emotional ranges available here. This is great if you know you want what it's selling - but I'm still not sure.
Oh this is Nick Cave, I think if his name wasn't on this, it wouldn't be included, seems like a bit of a noisy mess.
not a good album to have in the background while trying to work. A very raw album, I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't quite it. Notable was 'blast off' pure chaos.
As a fan of Nick Cave’s recent albums, this was interesting, but a lot of these songs are extremely discordant and unpleasant to listen to. Some of them show glimpses of his later work, though. 2.5/5
Shite
Shit
I judged the album art and track names before listening, but was prepared to like the music more than either of those. Turns out that preparation wasn’t needed. This was terrible all around.
Never heard of this band before. Listened to the first five tracks, then only the first 5 or 10 seconds of the rest. Mostly unlistenable yelling and noise.
Albums like this is what I reserve my 1's for
No standouts
Groupe inconnu. =>1/5
I often enjoy some of the lowest rated albums on this list - the ones that eschew the conventional and therefore alienate the majority of listeners. This was just garbage. I think I liked one track and spent the rest of the time wishing it would finish. I am only giving to two to prevent the risk of this being lower than Kid Rock.
Far too sloppy. I’m not sure if intentional or not but the lack of timing was just too jarring for the music being played. I get that it may be going for a more DIY, punk aesthetic but at the very minimum keep a consistent tempo and try and hit more or less on the beat. Mixing was all over the shop (listen to ‘the dim locator’ and tell me why you can barely make out the vocals, and basically just hear the bass, the treble of the guitar and hi-hat/crash cymbals and very little else). Compared to Cave’s work with the bad seeds and beyond, this doesn’t touch the sides.
Dette var ikke noe for meg
Bad
Junk indeed
POW POWPOW POW POW POW
This one got me thinking about the difference between a 1-star and a 2-star rating. On the one hand, I guess this album kind of does what it sets out to do, which is to be abrasive and a bit off putting and challenging to listen to. On the other hand, I was super annoyed for almost the entire length of this album, so 1-star it is.
There are some albums that really test my patience... this was definitely one of those albums. This honestly felt like a raw, jam session, but in a bad way. Except for a few moments, almost nothing in this album connected with me.
I'm never quite sure if Nick Cave's thing is authentic or he's really just an over the top try hard. At this point I suppose it is who he is. No matter what I find it kind of tiresome after a while. Good playing and everything on the album but it all just sounds the same.
No
Honestly I'm unimpressed I don't remember a single song from the album
Sturlað dæmi. Hrátt og Cage-að en samt ekki. Rosalegt sound og alveg rífur mann í gang.
Nick Cave hefur aldrei verið að grínast þegar kemur að tónlist. Hrátt, þungt og pönkað. Birtday Party var besta pönkið frá Ástralíu.

Probably 2 and a half. Some decent and some too much of a mess
Great stuff
Bit mad but good
Shityard.
Junkyard is where this album belongs.
This is noise for the sake of noise. The best part of this album is easily the cover art (which would get 5 stars, but unfortunately for The Birthday Party this rating is just for the music).
too much for me.... i get freaging grouchy just listening
singer sounds like the personification of a cat in heat. no thanks
Really fun, love an album that stands out
Yeahhhh... not very great.. Didn't like it personally 2/5
I only knew Nick Cave from the bad seeds. Had no idea he did stuff like this. On track two and I love it. Now I understand what people mean when they say Nick has range. This is wild. I wish I could have heard this in the 80s. All of these are good, but “Release the bats” is my favorite so far.
meh
Opener sounds like if Nick Cave went hardcore punk. Lol had no idea the singer is actually Nick Cave when I wrote that. I really hated this.
I took one look at the album cover and knew I was not going to enjoy my experience. I have never been a fan of noisy music and this continued to prove my point.
No fav song
What a way to end the list it was absolutely bizarre from start to finish!
That’s some weird eighties alt rock punk, kind of a blend of Zappa and Lic Broccoli (but weirder) and not as good. Release The Bats is top track with its voodoo drum beat. (1.8*s) Just too weird for me…
Absolutely horrible. An album of just wretched noise. This is Nick Cave at his worst. I'll take the slow and somber side over this post-punk junk. I'm not sure what critical acclaim the record can ever get. Right on tune with the other noise albums on the list. Why are these must listens? 0.65 stars.
Nick Cave has run the gamut across this list. Some of his albums I have rather enjoyed, others I would gladly have skipped. I tend to enjoy of his grungy punk rock stuff more than the somber, ambient experimental work he did. This album with The Birthday Party is more in line with what I like from his catalog even if it devolves to a bunch of weird loud noise rock and growling a lot of the time. I guess Junkyard is an apt title as its a little dirty, dusty, muddy. Segments of it do feel like spare parts of abandoned songs or the dregs of some garage experimentation with his bandmates. It's got quite a few noisy head-scratchers but something about it kept me listening for better or worse. If you had told me that Nick Cave was hospitalized for mental health issues in the wake of this album it wouldn't have surprised me. I'm not sure what the argument is for this album to be on the 1001 list as it's mostly a mess but it must have been significant for some reason. I didn't know much about Nick Cave when we started this list but he does enough interesting stuff in and out of his musical career that I'm glad I got the exposure even if I don't consider myself a big fan. Nick Cave continues to do just enough where I'll keep him on my radar moving forward to see if he can strike gold again. 1.48 stars
Nick Cave fan since 1987. Tried very hard in the late Eighties to appreciate The Birthday Party, Boys Next Door and Grinderman phases, with little success. Is he really screaming “shite” repeatedly at the end of Dead Joe? But my ears keep perking up when it sounds more like the Bad Seeds, and it’s got the Nick Cave DNA even when it is “oh no Nick Cave no”, and I like She’s Hit and Several Sins.
This is another album that really doesn't deserve the hate it receives on this site. Obviously I can see it not being everyone's jam, but c'mon this is not at all one of the worst albums on this list. I mean that album cover alone keeps it far away from the bottom spots. Favorite track: Dead Joe
Wasn’t able to finish. Skip large part of songs. I prefer Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. 1/5. Won’t listen ever again. She's Hit : 1 Dead Joe : 1 The Dim Locator : 1,5 Hamlet (Pow, Pow, Pow) : 1 Several Sins : 1 Big-Jesus-Trash-Can : 1 Kiss Me Black : 1 "6" Gold Blade : 1 Kewpie Doll : 1 Junkyard : 1
Better than I remember it.
Thought the singer sounded a bit like Nick Cave, turned out it actually was Nick Cave. Anyway, my god this is shit. Sounds like a bunch of high school punks jamming in the garage.
não tem em qualidade decente, foi horrivel.
We really love Nick Cave here, don’t we?
I liked this album a LOT more than my first introduction to Nick Cave, mainly because of how much he truly commits to the bit on this album. It also helps that the musical backing is much more interesting, being some of the wildest and most discordant takes on punk music I've ever heard. The guitars sound sour and hell, the echoing bass gives the impression that this album was recorded in an abandoned warehouse, and the drums fire off at random. Despite all the chaos, there's clear intention behind every decision, with the songs having a clear structure and progression that prevent this from being random noise. Cave's vocal performance matches this grimy energy, feeling truly unrestrained in a way that doesn't feel forced or unnecessary. His lyrics are once again filled with dark, unpleasant imagery, and this time it feels like the instrumentals are prepared to match that energy. This is a dirty, grimy, raw album, one that not everyone is going to like, but if you're tuned into its frequency you'll get a lot out of it.
Almost a 2, but no, I couldn't make it.
Man, I want to rate this higher, but it really does sound like it was recorded in a metal trash can.
Not really that enjoyable
A little all over the place. Sometimes good, sometimes I wanted to stop listening.
2/5
Just a bunch of noise
I should have believed the title a little more. Maybe a little more junk and a little less yard.
