I was really keen to like this more than I did, but equally, I was pleased to enjoy it more than I feared I would. Loveless is a classic of the genre, this doesn’t massively add anything to what they have ordinarily done, but I have a feeling I will be listening to it again. 3/5.

I remember this album being a big deal when it first came out. I'm not a big shoegaze fan, but I can respect this band as being foundational to the genre--and I did enjoy "new you" on this listen especially.

a lot of this album sounded the same to me. Kinda had some Smashing Pumpkin vibes or Cocteau Twins maybe (different voice of course). Is it bad? not at all but for me its not one I'd come back to much

i dont think im enlightened enough for shoegaze sometimes

I always think this is going to be My Chemical Romance, so I’m pleasantly surprised when it’s not. But it’s still pretty middle of the road in its own right.

Could never get into loveless - first time listening to "m b v" and same vibe.

Not as good as earlier stuff

I don’t know if I would qualify as a MBV full-time fan but I definitely have an appreciation for those who are. This album was a good listen. Some musicians have the vocal/lyrical strength to draw the listener in. Much like Radiohead, MBV has the ability to use their music to elicit an emotional reaction. Honestly, I can’t pinpoint any particular lyric here. However, the vocals become another instrument guiding the song forward, or floating atop its wave. Key song for me was “in another way”, which was probably more my current mood as it fit the vibe. I don’t know if I would hunt for this album, but I could definitely listen again if the mood fit.

Random thoughts: * I listened to this album while I mowed my lawn over the weekend. * It was kind of the perfect album with droning and monotony to play for yard work. * This is peak show gaze. This is good for when dream pop is too dreamy, you can play some MBV. * I think this would definitely reward listeners to really experience and feel this album multiple times. * I could see myself finding my way back to this MBV album again. * Nothing Is kind of snapped me out of the trance since it rocked so hard. Otherwise I just stayed in the meditative layer of shoe gazing.

A bunch of boring. Good for a rainy day which is why it got a 3 instead of a 2

This is #day770 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's to my second record by My Bloody Valentine. As much as I like shoegaze and dream pop, I don't think this particular record belongs on the list. It's a comeback record, right? So is that the only reason it's here? Otherwise, this band has said it all before. Also, hear me out again: three My Bloody Valentine and absolutely fucking zero by Slowdive on this list. Not to mention Lush and many others. Slowdive released an impressive comeback in 2017, but who cares? This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day771.

7.4/10. A dream pop album that was their first project back in 22 years, it was certainly interesting. They combined the rock and shoegaze well, and I thought it created an interesting atmosphere while listening. It wasn't super heavy or powerful, but it slowly built throughout each song, compounding across the album to reach its peak at the end. Not many lyrics, it was definitely more about the sound than the story, which I liked.

In my opinion, shoegaze is always cool when the effects add extra layers to the songs. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with My Bloody Valentine - the sound just gets denser. Here, I’d actually prefer a careful, transparent production that brings the vocals more to the forefront. However, Kevin Shields’ vocals lack the carrying power for that. So, in summary, a band that makes the best of its limited capabilities? Maybe. At the very least, "m b v" is an album that wouldn’t be on this list if they weren’t Brits.

i miss loveless

Surprisingly liked this about the same level as Loveless, even though this seems to be rated waaay lower. I don't know, I really liked the fuzzy sound of this (not too different from the album before this) and the last track was really really awesome.

Pretty solid album. Not exactly what I was expecting but I ended up enjoying.

No notes

good album, some great moments

some pretty great ambient shoegaze. my only complaints are that it sometimes leans a little too far into the ambient part for my taste, and that some of the loops are a bit too short, causing them to become annoying.

Holy fuck this was lifeless. I get the need for MBV and music that's supposed to be more of a backdrop than anything, ambient music does it for me. But this ain't it. The recording quality sounds thin and lacks dynamics. The guitar notes seem random and without intent. The singing is rambly at best. I have so little patience for albums like this where it’s the 3rd from an artist. Close to a 1/5

Surprisingly soothing album for me

Didn't like this at all.

i find m b v boring in general but loveless at least has some memorable tracks 4.5/10 best song - n/a

I'd forgotten how beautiful the first half of this MBV comeback album is - it's like they picked up exactly where they left off. The second half explores some new sounds, and whilst I appreciate the variety and development, it does feel a bit like 2 EPs. I wonder if a different track order would take this from a 4 to a 5?

This sounds indistinguishable from their 90s shoegaze, and I wasn't a fan the first time round.

Not as good as Loveless or Isn't Anything but entirely listenable and in the same vein until the last two tracks go right off a cliff for some reason. 22 years between albums may be too long but still a decent effort.

Saturday, 10 October, 2026 Not as good as I remember it being when it was released. Every good song I was waiting for was from Loveless. It’s still great.

“Do you think that if you were falling in space... that you would slow down after a while, or go faster and faster?” Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)

This album is an invite to become a guitar tone pervert. At first I was like "no thank you" and then I was like "actually yes". You have to crank the volume. MBV definitely influenced a lot of music I like (blonde redhead, boris, cornelius, dinosaur jr) but no other band does this as effectively.

Very etherial sounding, good music to disassociate to - 3.4

What the hell is this crap? It is just droning and mumbling. I guess this band are progenitors of shoegaze but I'm finding it unlistenable. Made it 4 songs in and ejected.

I always had the impression this band was too cool for me to listen to. Listening kind of confirmed that experience because I felt their influence on a dozen different things I like but also couldn't quite concentrate on anything. In situations like this where I am glad I listened but have no idea what I personally think I usually give a 3, but perhaps I will come back and change my mind later.

decent but i'm a fickle purist for the og shoegaze scene

I'm just delighted this album exists because it means I got to see them live having missed them first time round. I think it might be my favourite of theirs. Loveless was more ground breaking and influential, certainly deserving of its slot in the book, but m b v has more twists and turns, more charm for me.

The music was not what I expected, but not terrible. Good background music for work today.

I just do not get the appeal of these guys.

Boring shoegaze garbage

Oof! Had to discard my usual 3 listens rule with this album. It's just not for me. It just sounds to me like a collection of notes and sounds that shouldn't, and don't, go together but have just been. I tolerated the first couple of songs which sounded really similarly bad, although it was the third song, who sees you, that first broke my ears, but nothing is as bad as nothing is! is this and yes was my 'favourite' track, or the best of a bad bunch. new you was also quite bearable. There is obviously a market for the music, and it's important that music makes you feel 'something' but I'm not sure how this makes me feel! It's just too much of an assault on my brain to hear so many pitch bends and strange effects. I guess that some people just hear music differently to me and I bet a lot of time went into making this sound exactly how they wanted it to. That, and the album's uniqueness, is worth a level above the ignominy of 1 star, but I wont be listening to this again. 2 stars

I love My Bloody Valentine. "Loveless" is in my Top 5 albums. I have nearly everything they ever released. Except this. I was excited when m b v was announced. Then when I heard it, I realized that all the charm was gone. The sounds were all there, but it was more abrasive, and just harder to listen to than anything they have ever released before. I keep trying to convince myself that I actually enjoyed this, but in reality... m b v was a slog I did not enjoy.

This stuff really does it for me

I think this albums just embarrassing ngl The first half is inoffensive, and I guess relaxing at times. I just don’t like anything about this one; I HATE the stupid whispering vocals thing and especially when the “backing track” is basically just white noise. The first half is painfully boring at times. Which wouldn’t land it too low, we’ve had a ton of boring albums before and as long as it’s better than nothing it’s still escapes its fate of being condemned to the pile of 1s. And then the second half comes along; what the hell is that? “nothing is” is just putrid, actually sounds like a broken song and hurts to even think about, one of the worst creative decisions I’ve heard in recent memory. From a thematic perspective it’s shallow and honestly feels like something a teenager would make. Except the lead guy was FIFTY when he made this. I just think this is an embarrassing piece of media and I found absolutely no value in it. Also shoutout 1001 for putting quite literally the bands entire discography on this list, god I don’t want to listen to the other two albums they made

Really the most interesting thing about this album is how weird silence sounds after a track ends. Definitely more of a 'vibe' or 'experience,' but as an album I would never put it on again.

They came back with some new ideas for amazing sounds.

I love My Bloody Valentine's second album 'Loveless' but never gave either of their other two albums a listen until now. This absolutely lives up to the hype that came after Loveless and gives it a run for it's money. 9/10

Loveless had its moments, but m b v feels formulaic. Old band reforms, and drops a sterile reenactment of past glories. We've seen it happen with every big band past their prime: Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest etc. What differentiates My Bloody Valentine from the other big bands is that between Loveless and this, they weren't ever truly forgotten. Late 90s and early 00s alternative rock was inspired by indie a la MBV. Plus, appearing every now and then to say you're working on an album gives the average fan the sensation of a multi-year edge session. And finally, the album drops, and the load has been released. And then you realize the mess, the sterile sound of the album, and the numbing sensation of 45 minutes of buzz and sultry female vocals that make you ask yourself: where's the catch? What's the point? There is no point. And much like gooning, the fan moves on end edges onwards, and to this day he still edges, waiting for the 4th sweet load release. But hey, Kevin said the album is 85% done, so it will be all over soon. Right??

no le entendí nada...

Sounds muffled and mushed at times. One song reminds me a bit of 90’s U2 — not my favorite. Perhaps being a little too hard on this album since I feel I should like it more but alas.

Lacked substance. Had potential, but didn’t build to anything. Noise, ambient, Somber, but not anything… Rating: 4/10 Favorite Song: only tomorrow

Хочу отметить трек new you.

Removed Album #43 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) From the Vault #43 (March 21, 2026) Eeeyup, a My Bloody Valentine album was pulled from the list. Truth be told, I can see why. While I've never listened to the album of the hour, I've always heard that it was a good, if unessential listen within their discography and the weakest of their three albums. I'm looking forward to this album partly because I like My Bloody Valentine, but also because it marks the end of an era. I listened to Loveless because it's Loveless, Isn't Anything? through this list and now this album ahead of schedule. Here goes. Huh. Interesting. While this album is heavily rooted in shoegaze, there's more of a standard, 90s alt rock sound peeking through the music as well, notably down the middle and throughout the latter half. The guitar reverb in particular sounds less shoegazey and more alternative at points. There's also more of an electronic sound at play throughout. Honestly, I prefer the derivative, less original latter half of this album to the songs that are more authentically within their style. Those songs have a satisfying level of variety, and the band succeeds more when they're leaning into the ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere of this album. It's also just difficult for me to not compare the fully shoegaze tracks at the beginning of this album to Loveless, which has much stronger material. That isn't to say this album is bad by any means. It's a solid listen - just non-essential. Time to figure out why this album was pulled, though deep down I already know why. Added to either the 2013 or 2016 edition of the book (I don't have a scan of 2013) and pulled from either the 2018 or 2021 revisions of the book (I also don't have have a scan of either). The book entry says that "Kevin Shields is to music what Terrence Malick is to movies: a perfectionist and producer of artworks of rich color and rare beauty that seem to exist in another dimension". "...the passing of time is rarely acknowledged on this album." "...more reaffirmation than radical departure". "Loveless was so far ahead of its time that it left guitar music playing an unwinnable game of catch-up. Combining beauty and brutality, m b v is its logical successor." Wikipedia says this album was recorded in three bursts: while they were still active in the 90s, during their 2006 reunion and then later in 2011. Was warmly received by critics and made it onto a few best-of lists for 2013. Only had modest chart success, but Sweden and Scotland appear to have liked it. So, why was this album removed? When compared to the indelible mark that their previous two albums left on rock music, this album is definitely a weak link. It's also an indie album, which are easy enough targets as is. I would normally be content with snubbing this album when going by objective merit, but I think this album occupies an interesting historical niche. My Bloody Valentine are one of the many indie or otherwise overlooked bands that caught a second wind throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s - a success which is owed almost entirely to how drastically the Internet has altered the way music is shared and consumed. Sure, they were always a smash with the critics, but that success never translated into mass appeal until around the time of this album's release. For that reason, I feel like I got value out of listening to this album. I cosign this inclusion.

Very much the soundtrack for people who have buckets of ennui and no place to go. I have been and will be this person, just not today. My gaze is firmly away from my navel and until it shifts back downward (gaze or navel), I'm gonna have to give this the meh rating.

Listened. Why?

I'm a pretty big shoegaze appreciator, but I've always enjoyed MBV-inspired bands more than actual MBV. I like my shoegaze a bit punchier and less floaty. I don't hate this album, but I can definitely see why people do.

Not what I would have expected from a band named "My Bloody Valentine" flowy spacy alt rock wouldn't have been my guess at all. It was pretty nice, but at least in the way I ended up listening to it it all sort of melded together a bit and I can't really remember where one track ended and another started even now just a day later Standouts - 3/5

Hypnotized.

I think I hear a foghorn: Booooooooring! I didn't like their 1991 (or whenever) output proposed ealier in my 1001 albums journey, neither do I like this. In the early 90s maybe it was new or groundbreaking or whatever, but I don't see any progress in the music. Though I for sure won't check the other album again for comparison.

I liked this. Feels like 1975 was highlight influenced by them. More of these please less spoken word French music.

Opening numbers, “she found now” and “only tomorrow” are too fuzzy for me. They are isort of pretty, but I’m not sure why there is singing. I heard no discernible words. The fuzzy sound and distortion was a bit much after song 3. Possibly critical acclaim is that it doesn’t sound like other bands’ music? “New you” picked it up a bit, but not enough for me. “Nothing is” worked for me—the propulsive beat. The standout for me.

Looking at the shoe gaze genre I should like this album, but its just kind of noise to me then any real ear catching interest. I'm sure for those who love this band it's amazing, to me it was a chore to get through.

Not all noise is good noise.

My Bloody Valentine were never going to get a completely unbiased review from me, and 𝘮 𝘣 𝘷 arrived at exactly the right time: shoegaze was enjoying a major revival, and plenty of newer bands seemed to be asking themselves, “What if we sounded a bit more like My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive?” Then, after twenty-two years, My Bloody Valentine themselves finally turned up again. Among the major shoegaze bands of the original era, MBV were the first to release a proper comeback album, and thankfully 𝘮 𝘣 𝘷 does not sound like a museum piece. It feels like a continuation of the same strange universe: buried vocals, warped melodies, huge guitar textures, and songs that seem to exist somewhere between pop music and controlled structural damage. Kevin Shields’ guitar walls are still the main attraction. I have no idea how long he spent building them, but given his reputation, there is a fair chance some of these sounds took longer to finish than certain bands’ entire careers. The important thing is that they still sound magnificent: dense, shimmering, disorienting, and somehow just as physical as they were on 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴. And that is also the problem. 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 exists. 𝘮 𝘣 𝘷 is excellent, adventurous, and far better than a twenty-two-year comeback had any right to be, but it never quite reaches that impossible standard. Still, there is something deeply satisfying about MBV returning in the middle of a shoegaze revival they helped inspire and immediately reminding everyone who built the blueprint. As of 2026, it has now been another thirteen years since 𝘮 𝘣 𝘷. Maybe Kevin is working on the next album. Maybe he is still adjusting one guitar layer by half a decibel. Either explanation seems equally plausible.

I don’t get this genre.

Snoozegaze

This isnt what I expected at all. I thought MBV was more emo/rock but I was super wrong. Not sure what this is, psychedlic, athmospheric rock? Anyway it's definitely non conventional for better and worse. I find general enjoyment strongly dampened by repetitiveness and ear grating decision. Though I don't think I'll come back to this, it has left an impression and I'm glad to know what MBV is actually about.

once again like a beautiful decaying dream - sometimes I loved it, sometimes I wanted it to be over, such is life

Not my cup of tea

The things Kevin Shields can do with a guitar !!

Interesting sound but hard to assess on one listen

I'm a big fan of My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" but have never listened to this album before. This is interesting but not as good as "Loveless." Also, the production seems so much more muddy than "Loveless." I would have expected that more than 20 years between releases would have meant _better_ production. I feel like I might enjoy these songs more if the production matched that of "Loveless" more closely.

Shoe gaze? You’re making it up, right? There are some good melodies buried in here, but they’re smothered under so much distortion that most of the time it just sounds like my turntable and amp are on the blink. 1½

++: she found now, only tomorrow, who sees you, if i am, new you, nothing is, wonder 2 +: is this and yes, in another way 9,7/10

I really struggled with this. I understand the point of shoegaze but it so monotonous and repetitive that it's hard to listen to. It descended rapidly in quality in the second half. The final two tracks were abysmal.

Lush distortion, it just didn’t grab me like loveless.

I always assumed this was just another emo band that sounded like an emo band? I didn't expect a noise pop band. I didn't like it either.

4 - for as much noise as they make it’s pretty lethargic. Just below ok.

This record sets out what it was made to do. Very heavy distorted noises make you feel like you're in a dream that you can't wake up from. I thought this was okay. Favourite Track(s): nothing is Least Favourite Track(s): who sees you

chill wall of noise

Buzzy, wall-of-noise shoegaze

Never listened. Expectations: High - Verdict: Very Good - I can't believe I have never gotten around to giving this a go considering how much of a classic Loveless is. She Found Now is beautifully washed out and muffled, I need to play this seriously loud at some point. Only Tomorrow continues in this vein of being the most shoegazy shoegaze I have ever heard. Is This And Yes is lovely and reminds me a bit of Stereolab. New You is more grounded and immediate as is In Another Way. They both bring a completely different energy to the album which would have been in danger of becoming one dimensional. Nothing Is is another surprise and works brilliantly, it almost reminds me of Swans - really cool track. I thoroughly enjoyed this album.

truly terrible

Yeah, this definitely had its moment! Repetitive and, ultimately, boring... but I can understand the enthusiasm of its fans, so I'll give it a 2 out of 5.

This was a nice palette cleanser after the news of Dolly passing. A little more intense than low-fi girl but made me think of that. Sorry MBV you had one helluva an act to follow. 3.

interesting

Per Wikipedia: "The album was also included in the 2014 revision of the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, although it was removed in later versions." Cold fucking comfort there.

Oh The Way I Knew I Would Hate This The Moment They Didnt Use Any Capitalization. Let Me Make Up For This In Order To Balance The Universe.

I really felt like this kind of went nowhere. It took me a while to realize that I hadn't really noticed the changes between songs. It just sounded like they were running a jam session of random noises and humming/light singing.

My speaker died right before the last song on this album, and for that, I’m grateful. I believe strongly that this was made so that this band could say anything they released would be critically acclaimed no matter how bad it is. This is what you get for slobbering all over Loveless, even though that album sucks too.
