Female led alt rock, very cool.
Rad guitar solos, love the musicality
Foundational pop punk, love
I think I get boomer nostalgia now
Just couldn't connect. Decent musical moments but they didn't gel with each other or with the lyrics in a way that I would've liked.
I really like the beats, don't love the vocals. Lyrics are super repetitive.
Ska is fun, idk what else to say
Janis's voice was killer! Like its own instrument.
I was getting into it and then Aumgn came on. 17 min of a Halloween atmospheric track. Peking O was only a little better. I could get into everything else but those two songs pissed me right off.
Rough and smooth in all the right places.
Would be a 4 but I just don't like most rap-rock.
Going in my jazz rotation.
Didn't like Iggy's vocals or most of his lyrics, the band was good though
Weird but I dig it. Need to give that one another listen.
Really, really disjointed. The faux radio transitions didn't age super well but I didn't hate them. Last song was bad. Wish McLaren 1) didn't sing/rap on any of these tracks and 2) credited the artists, all of whom did great work on the album.
Wonderfully weird and heartfelt
Kinda meandering but I generally liked it
There were songs that I liked but the length of the record makes it hard to weigh as a full project. Lyrics were generally just fine. I didn't love the lead male vocals. The melodies and musical ideas were mostly good to great.
Pleasant. I liked the flute
Last two songs hit particularly well.
I had only heard Come Together, Here Comes The Sun, and Golden Slumbers (as a cover in Sing). That's a shame cause this album is full of great tunes! Oops all bangers!
Totally thought the chorus to the title track was "Man on the Run". Anyways it's a good album
I love dance tracks so I liked this album. It's definitely meant to be listened to at the club as the songs are a bit repetitive. Still overall fun!
Bit depressing, still good
The singer's voice got pretty annoying after a while. I'd probably like this more if I heard it live.
Deeply personal, a generational talent gone too soon
Wish I could hear this live, I bet it kills.
Definitely like the hip hop and funk leaning songs more than the rock leaning ones. Pretty fun, I see why they were the frat band of the time.
This style of music inspired the musical Cabaret, which I genuinely like. I couldn't get into this album though. I think it'd work better with more full instrumentation or if I heard it live in a small venue. I also bet the German version of this album sounds better. It's almost there.
I don't think I've ever connected to music with non-English lyrics like I have with this album. Just straight heat, so much funk and soul
Learning that I really like 70s rock
It's not bad, there are just better versions of all of these songs.
Again, I really like 70s rock
Wish he was a better singer. Great story telling though
Thom Yorke jumpscare. Decent album, good voice.
This would've gone triple platinum on my iPod touch when I was younger. I still like it but the pacing's a bit weird and the lyrics are a bit boring.
Rock made by a theater kid which is right up my alley. Totally get why he was in Rocky Horror now.
Kanye's a great rapper, it's well produced, and it touches on some deeply personal issues that I can see being relatable. Totally get why the album and Kanye are so influential. I can't 100% connect to it because I'm clearly not the target demo. These songs are clearly geared towards guys with the way that sex/women/pussy is talked about. Wish that Kanye didn't lose his mind.
Probably the most British album I've ever heard. Some of these songs are so bleak in the best way possible.
The 2020 mention in Saturday Night freaked me out.
Anyways this bangs. It's a nice break from all of the rock albums that I've gotten lately. The genre mixing is well done. The album as a whole is welcoming, I feel like it's music for anyone and everyone while still having a strong, specific perspective.
Very cool. The more avant-garde songs got weird but they didn't overstay their welcome.
Miles Davis has one of my favorite horn tones and So What is a classic
Lyrically very good, musically good but a touch repetitive
What on earth is going on with that mix. I could barely hear the vocals half of the time.
Idk it was very disjointed but the guitar, bass, and drums were pretty good. Vocals were hit or miss.
Classic pop punk with good production.
Took me a little bit to acclimate. I appreciate the talent on display but I am just not a thrash metal person.
Fine, didn't leave much of an impression.
Mixed bag but nothing that was awful.
Most of the songs started with a great groove but then repeated that groove over and over and over again. By disc two it got a bit tedious. The rhythm section is killer the entire album though.
Perfect voice for country!
Messy production and messy playing makes a hard listen. I'm assuming that it must've sounded better in the room. Starship was interesting.
Great musically and very fun!
Half of the songs sound like a wasted guy singing karaoke, which I wouldn't mind as much if the band didn't sound so clean. It comes together (enough) for some of the songs though
I wanted to be in the room with them! Great live album.
Unsettling but I think that's what they were going for. I appreciate the musicianship! I never want to listen to this again.
Didn't do anything for me. Nothing bad, just no connection
I think each song individually is fine-ish but listening all of them back to back was rough. Same vocals with the same cadence and same drive from the rest of the band. I've heard punk that I've liked (mostly in my local scene), but I have not been able to get into most of the punk albums that the generator has given me.
Great groove throughout the album. I can hear how the Arctic Monkeys influenced alt rock.
Just so cool. I listened to a lot of hip hop from this era when I was a kid and it always sits right with me.
Liked it fine, it didn't leave a strong impression
Really lush orchestrations and fantastic production. I think I just have a hard time getting into psych rock because while this album was beautiful, it took me a bit to get into it. Consider this a very high 4. Maybe if I smoked weed it'd be a 5.
Timbaland is one of the best producers of all time. Missy's still developing as a rapper on this album, but it wasn't an unpleasant experience.
I was better prepared after listening to his last album but yeah his voice is still not great. Still great lyrics though.
Weirdly this album runs into the same problem of a lot of punk rock albums: some songs with great socio-political messages and a lot of songs about stuff that is wayyy less important (sex in particular). Production and flow is very strong though.
A lot of this hasn't aged great. I will say that a lot of y'all's favorite rock/folk/country artists have said worse things about women in songs. Some of the pearl clutching in the reviews feels silly.
Really confused as to why this is considered a must-listen album. Besides the interludes it sounds like video game backing tracks.
Quite depressing for an album called "On the Beach"
It's at its best when the bassist settles into a groove. I liked the violin overall as well. A bit too much noodling around for my taste and I don't think we needed to raid the percussion drawer for every wacky instrument in there.
Got kinda boring after a while. I think all of these songs are fine to good in isolation but they're mostly slow and sad
I really love the production and I think the instrumentation is really smart. I'm not into super dreary music, and unfortunately the whole album is just dark and slow. Also, the singer really can't sing at all. It's a low 3.
Chill with important messaging
Lots of different types of pop represented here which I liked. A bit long though.
You can tell that these lyrics came from journals; they're super meandering without being particularly clever. Mitchell's a great vocalist per usual and the music is pretty tight.
The composition across the album is fantastic, but the vocal layering or reverb effect is a bit much.
Good, fun, not a ton of substance.
The guitar tone is fantastic throughout. Some of the songs could've been a touch shorter.
I think I've settled on the RHCP being a great band dragged down by a bad front man. Kiedis can't sing and he can't rap. The rest of the band holds it down the whole album.
I'd heard of Phil Spector and the Wall of Sound, but listening to this album while reading those Wikipedia pages helped me put both in perspective. Unfortunate that such an influential person did such awful things to the people around him.
"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is an unimpeachable classic. The other songs on this album are also done well, particularly those done by Darlene Love and The Ronettes. When comparing to other Christmas albums it's a 5, when comparing to other albums generally I'll give it a 4.
Listening to this album makes me feel bad for Eminem (or at least the Eminem of 2000). This is music written by an troubled guy. It's also really hard to listen to because of how edgy and heavy it is. The constant f-slurs don't help either. I had to take a few breaks while listening. Eminem is a technically gifted rapper and Dre's production is clean, but I won't be returning to it anytime soon.
