Album Summary
Crime of the Century is the third studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released in September 1974 on A&M Records. Crime of the Century was Supertramp's commercial breakthrough in many countries, most notably in the UK, Canada and Germany where it peaked in the Top 5 while also making the Top 20 in Australia and France. It was an improvement over their previous sales in the US, but still only peaked at No. 38, with the US hit being "Bloody Well Right". "School" was another popular track, particularly at album rock-oriented radio stations. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US in 1977 after the release of Even in the Quietest Moments.... In Canada, it was eventually certified Diamond (sales of one million copies). The album was Supertramp's first to feature drummer Bob Siebenberg (at the time credited as Bob C. Benberg), saxophone and clarinet player and vocalist John Helliwell, bassist Dougie Thomson, and co-producer Ken Scott. The album has received critical acclaim, including its inclusion in Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time".The album's dedication reads "To Sam", which is a nickname for Stanley August Miesegaes, the Dutch millionaire who supported the band financially from 1969 to 1972.

A bit like happier Pink Floyd
Not as whacky as some prog rock albums and maybe that’s for the best. Supertramp’s in a weird category of trying to sound mainstream while maintaining the versatility and stream-of-conscience that prog brings. I grew up hearing Supertramp on classic rock stations particularly my grandmother’s 70’s fave 92.1 The Pickle! Haven’t heard their songs in probably 10 years and I feel like a kid discovering grandma’s music for the first time. It feels like nostalgia for a time you never lived.
Supertramp’s Crime of the Century is a good album, with some classics on it, like School and Dreamer. Is it flawless? No. Still, it’s a good listen. 3,5/5. Close to a 4. School : 5 Bloody Well Right : 5 Hide in Your Shell : 3 Asylum : 2 Dreamer : 5 Rudy : 3 If Everyone Was Listening 3 Crime of the Century : 3
Me los descubrió mi primo Joaquinchu. Se convirtió en mi album favorito de Supertramp con el paso de los años. Genial comienzo y final.
Dreamer was particularly good. ★★★
So based on my knowledge of Supertramp from classic rock radio stations, and especially due to my hatred of The Logical Song, I’ve always figured that I don’t really like them. But Crime of the Century has a very strong reputation, which has lead me to think that I need to check it out someday. Well, Someday is here. This album is possibly the most OKest album that I’ve ever encountered. It’s don’t really hate anything about it, but I don’t really love anything about it either. It’s fine. That’s it.
Kind of proggy like a directionless Pink Floyd or Genesis. Occasionally a touch of Queen, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Chicago. Kind of proggy but kind of yacht rocky at the same time. After the album ended, Spotify put on a song from the Crosby, Stills and Nash album where they are all pictured on the cover sailing on David Crosby's yacht! Anyway... Most of the songs have a pretty good part, maybe even a good part that transitions nicely into another good part. But most of the songs also have a few "huh?" parts, a corny little cliché part, or some rambling directionless parts, and then they fade out... and then sometimes they come back and generally go on too long. I mean, I get that songs can be more than just verse chorus verse chorus chorus, give or take a bridge. But it takes some art or some vision to make it all work together. The overall effect is like a musical without a story or a concept album without a concept. I do like it when he yells "Not quite right!" Not sure if I should rate this one a 2 or a 3 but my last was a 2 so I'll give this one a 3. Essential listen: no Desert island disc: no
My mum used to sing dreamer whenever I asked for something she wasn’t gonna get me.
Incredible. Prog has always been my favorite genre, and this is just another incredible album that grows my love for the genre. Great piano, incredible guitar, awesome vocals, the whole package. 4.5/5.
Yeah, perfectly servicable and well mastered soft rock - background music that I don't quite get why it's on the List, but maybe I'm just not well versed enough on the soft rock ouevre. Preferred Breakfast in America myself.
Not really in the mood for prog rock, but then, not sure when I am. My mom will be happy to hear I listened to this
This album's sound stood out to me a bit, but not enough for me to rate it higher than your average rock album.
Rockin’
-Tracks longer than 3:59: Yes -Long tracks interesting or special: Kind of. I didn’t find my myself looking to see how much longer I need to listen to a song for very often. -Album shorter than 58 minutes: Yes. -Will listen to album again: Possibly -Overall: I liked this album more than I was expecting to. I’m not 100% sure why I thought this was going to be an album where I’d be skipping through tracks after the first minute or two, but I was pleasantly surprised when it came to an end and I had listened to the whole thing without having to take a break which happens sometimes (I’m looking at you Patty Smith). Not sure when I’ll have the hankering for Supertramp again, but it’s not out of the question that I will. 4/5
Monday, 19 October, 2026 Nothing much excited me here.
I loved and still love this album. Production still stands up today. Dreamer I bought as a single. I wasn’t really a fan after this album as they got more commercial.
Listened to this twice as was so unsure on the first listen. The second listen was way more enjoyable, I do think the first half of the album is way better. Wasn’t a fan of the song “dreamer” as the vocals are a little jarring but enjoyed these. School Bloody well right Hide in your shell
Apt title. A true musical crime. Too many bands in the 70s were stricken with this wannabe-McCartney virus where everything had to sound like the Abbey Road medley. It's bad, aesthetically, and it comes off smarmy to me. It feels like some dudes started a rock band to prove how eclectic their tastes are and that they're actually refined composers who can pull from Tin Pan Alley, jazz, showtunes, classical, etc. Also, it's very funny that the first sentence of their bio on wikipedia is about how they were patronized by a Dutch millionaire -- this album sure sounds like it. I don't like it and I don't even really respect it. Bad album.
Listened before?: never School - 5/5 Bloody Well Right - 4/5 Hide in Your Shell - 5/5 Asylum - 3/5 Dreamer - 3/5 Rudy - 4/5 If Everyone Was Listening - 3/5 Crime of the Century - 5/5 Average score: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is very solid album, probably better than I expected.
The 1st track isn't bad, but it isn't something I would go out of my way to listen to, 3/5. The 2nd track is also a 3/5, not bad but not something I would go out of my way to listen to. The 3rd track isn't bad, but also not something I would go out of my way to listen to, so a 3/5, with how this is going I feel like the album it self is going to be a 3/5 album. The 4th track 3/5, not bad but as I said before I would listen to it if it showed up, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it. The 5th track 3/5, not a bad song, but not something I would go out of my way to listen to. The 6th track also a 3/5, as said before, it's not a bad song, just not something I would go out of my way to listen to. The 7th track 3/5, not a bad track, but as said before, won't go out of my way to listen to it. The 8th track 3/5 as said before, not bad but not something I would go out of my way to listen to. I would give this album a 3/5, it's not a bad album per-say, but it's not an album I would go out of my way to listen to.
Good lord. I can't imagine someone saying with a straight face that you need to listen to Supertramp, much less an album that isn't Breakfast in America before you die. It's like saying you haven't lived until you tried powdered eggs from an interstate motel breakfast.
The songs I don't find too proggy are just meh.
Why this one and not Breakfast in America? Why this band at all?
So very meh. I'm starting to suspect this is actually the bad place.
PRETTY DECENT, I DONT KNOW WHY THIS IS IN CAPS THO
This was quite good. Bit of this, bit of that. I just might commit the crime of the century...
#475 It might be something one should listen to and it started off quite well. It sounds rather grand and proggy but doesn’t really go where I hoped it might. Dreamer is the one song I knew but I’m not sure I like it that much. Also, the album cover reminds me of Superman II Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die? ❌ Fave track(s): Bloody Well Right Rating: 5/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
3.8/4
Kind of waited for it to end tbh. Crazy how much better i like the songs i know from breakfast in america (which i have now learned was put out after the band changed members and who played what and such)
Personally I think Dreamer is a bit overrated compared to some of the other songs on this record. Both the intro and outro to CotC do a better job of drawing me in personally. All-together, its a relatively cohesive album that I could listen to again, but probably won't intentionally. Favorite Song: Crime of the Century Score: 80/100
7.7/10
This was just bland soft rock with prog blended in. It’s probably for fans of stuff like Chicago and other similar bands
This is the 70s-est thing that ever 70s-ed. Which, ok fine, but it’s boring. It dips its toe (whole foot actually) into Prog Rock but doesn’t quite commit. The songs are boring and not at all catchy. When I saw that the album of the day was Supertramp I was like, ok, sure, “The Logical Song” and “Goodbye Stranger” are solid classic rock songs. But this album didn’t contain those, or any other song I’d heard before. I see that all the Supertramp songs I know are on “Breakfast in America” and I don’t understand why this snoozefest was the album of choice and not that one.
Starts slow but really picks up around song 3, honestly a fan
Ok. Guilty as charged. One of my guilty pleasures, loved this as a teenager, do I like it now? Not really…
It's alright. I thought after the harmonica intro it'd be my cup of tea but it never really went anywhere for me after that. But no real dislike of it
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album Pretty familiar How do I feel about this artist? I really like Supertramp Pre-Listen Thoughts: I’m not sure why this one is on here instead of breakfast, but nevertheless I’m excited to listen to it in full Favorite track(s): Bloody Well Right Post-Listen Thoughts: This is an easy 5 for me because I like this band a lot. Not all 5s are mind blowing, some are just consistently solid across the album, and that’s what this is. Breakfast would be like a 6.
They kinda alternate between being a Pink Floyd rip-off and being a really dynamic band with fun keyboard licks and wacky ideas. The opening track is awesome and I wish this album had more stuff like that. Still very enjoyable. I had never really listened to these guys before.
very very cool. supertramp has this slightly kooky high energy panache to it, and there's a couple of tracks here where it really sings. Rudy had the biggest payoff to it, and Crime Of The Century was a sick closer. solid 4
Rating: 8/10 Listened to the new remaster. Very Pink Floyd in the way it's spacey, epic and dramatic, built around a prog rock shell but then it also has a real pop sensibility. Which is certainly interesting for the time, I can't think of much like this that directly compares, rockin' prog pop with orchestration. I enjoyed it a fair bit even though I might not often be returning to it, just thought it was a quite a good album. It's driven by a really chill and vibey atmosphere and tight songwriting even through its long passages, takes its time to breathe and has some good payoffs. This is helped by all of the interesting variety in its instrumentation, excellent percussion throughout, I really liked the way the piano moved, when the bass got groovy, and that deep sax joined in. Lulls just a little bit in the middle with a couple slightly weaker songs. Starts and ends very strongly, School and the title track are sick
Excellent prog/pop rock. The songs are catchy and the instrumentation is really unique. Got four stars just because I felt the latter songs started to be less innovative.
good!
This may well be the last album to blow my mind this much that I wasn't already familiar with. Only about 80 albums left, and looking at what I have coming over the next few months, it's all just stuff I already know or stuff I'm dreading. But this one really grabbed me in a way I wasn't expecting. It really felt like a truly unique prog rock album, with a real sense of identity that a lot of bands from this era lack. I genuinely haven't heard anything quite like this, and listening to this has given me a whole new perspective on this era of prog rock. I love this challenge so much, because even after sometimes multiple months in a row of complete shit, you occasionally get a gem like this that you never would have expected to love so much.
Really interesting album. Incredible harmonies and the arrangements keep you guessing
Great prog rock classic
Firm 3, is pleasant but will be swiftly forgotten. RYM: N Saved a song: N
eh, not on YouTube music + quite mid
Nice
A fine instrumental work.
I can't be the only one that immediately thinks Superman II whenever they see this album cover? I love 70s stuff and this is so 70s but it is too lumbering and ponderous for me. I don't get its popularity at all. Needs replaced with some Van Der Graaf Generator.
Far more compelling than I anticipated but prog sensibilities mixed with pop melodies isn’t such a bad idea.
popurtinistic progrock shit, what if the wall sucked even more ass
bom
If anybody tries to tell you Supertramp is boring, show them this album. Such an engaging listen from start to finish, themed almost entirety around isolation whilst somehow managing to remain upbeat in spite of the darker subject matter. The mixing is superb, the lyrics told some rather deep stories, and I found myself wanting to stick it on again straight after. Definitely need to give this band a proper deep-dive now.
A classic album! I was fortunate enough so see a cover band of them with my family recently and loved the music.
09/28 Pretty good prog rock album
I quite liked this. Not quite as yacht rock as Steely Dan which goes a long way. It is definitely quite cheesy, but it is a lot of fun.
After a long run of crap, finally get to something worth listening to. It's been on my playlist so long that I don't need 1001 to highlight. What a shit show this app is.
Good
One of the best of the mid 70's
Adult progressive rock that has stood the test of time well. An easy listen with some superb musicianship that spans rock, orchestral pop, with enough blues grit and soul that makes this album feel raw and reel and not stray to much into over intellectual used space rock. An immediate relisted was necessary.
I like: School, Dreamer. Zeer degelijk album
Me to Bill after I lambast yet another prog album: "Don't arrange to have me sent to no asylum. I'm just as sane as anyone. It's just a game I play for fun." I'm getting better at articulating my distaste for prog. And "distaste" really is the best word to use. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the genre, but it is NOT to my taste. I most like music that's highly personal, and prog, by and large, is highly IMpersonal. It's the musical equivalent of an intellectual exercise, and that's an affront to all that makes music great (to me). This is the best prog album so far, and it's because it's the least impersonal. Love the piano and harmonies and horns on this one.
Soo good Rudy/ Asylum/ Bloody well right are all top songs for me on this I kinda forgot about Supertramp
Nothing really of note here. It couldn’t hold my attention even if I wanted to focus on the music.
I didn’t like this album
How to explain Supertramp - Crime of the Century… imagine if the Cars, Yes and The Dire Staits had a gang bang and that gang bang produced a baby. It’s fine. The production, talent etc is all there but nothing about it grabs me. A 2 feels low, as there isn’t anything wrong with it and has great qualities, but something about it it’s extremely forgettable.
First things first, this album sounds fucking fantastic. Seriously, the production on *Crime of the Century* is phenomenal. Everything is crisp, clean, warm, and beautifully balanced. The piano sounds gorgeous, the bass is rich, the saxophone cuts through perfectly, and every instrument seems to occupy its own little corner of the soundstage. For an album recorded in 1974, it's genuinely impressive. I can absolutely understand why audiophiles love this thing. If I were reviewing the production alone, we'd be having a very different conversation. The music itself, though? Eh. It's fine. I guess. I didn't hate it. I didn't particularly like it either. It's pleasant enough in that very polished, piano-driven, saxophone-heavy, 70s soft rock sort of way. Somewhere halfway between Billy Joel and Pink Floyd, except considerably worse than both. It's got Joel's theatrical piano-pop sensibilities mixed with some of Floyd's progressive ambitions and atmospheric production, but without the consistently memorable songwriting of the former or the emotional and psychedelic depth of the latter. And that's really my problem with it. Everything sounds so meticulously crafted, so carefully arranged, so technically accomplished, but very little of it actually grabs me. I can appreciate the musicianship, the arrangements, and the obvious care that went into making this record without necessarily wanting to listen to it again. It's the musical equivalent of walking through a beautifully decorated house and thinking, "Wow, somebody spent a lot of money on this," without having any particular desire to live there. There are moments when the band starts to stretch out into more interesting progressive territory, and I find myself getting a little more engaged. But then we're back to the earnest piano melodies and smooth saxophone, and I remember why this particular brand of 70s rock has never really been my thing. It's not bad. It's not even remotely offensive. It's just a little too polite, a little too safe, and a little too forgettable for my taste. Which is funny, because I generally love this era of music. I love progressive rock. I love ambitious arrangements, conceptual albums, theatricality, and bands that aren't afraid to get a little weird. On paper, Supertramp should be right up my alley. And yet, somehow, the whole thing leaves me pretty cold. All the ingredients are there, but the finished product just doesn't do much for me. I completely understand why people love this album, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who considers it a classic. The talent is undeniable, and the production really is spectacular. But great sound and great music aren't necessarily the same thing. Ultimately, *Crime of the Century* is an exceptionally well-produced album full of music I feel exceptionally indifferent about. 6.7/10. Sounds incredible. Wish I liked it more.*
Solid
LOOVE Supertramp so much, the keyboards are always incredible, and the compositions also, especially Dreamer. But sometimes I wish there were more poppy concise kinda songs like Dreamer.
Really like this one. School in particular is great
some real bangers on this one. very spacey and prog rock
Overall Rating - 3.88/5 (7.75/10). All in all, a great album.
Pretty boring honestly
This is probably the best Supertramp album I've ever heard. For those who discovered the band through the hit "Give a Little Bit," skip *Even in the Quietest Moments* and come straight to this one. Great album. 5 stars.
aburridisimo sin temas a resaltar
Great album but was not blown away
Stupendo, molto variegato e particolare
Supertramp is indeed the crime of the century.
Sick!
Some favorites (such as Bloody Well Right) keep this one a joy.
Musica con i controcoglioni
Solid classic rock. Some memorable tracks with lush, but not overkill, instrumentation.
I think it is more of a 3.5. Pleasantly surprised by this one! Never even heard of this band before.
Pretty decent album but didn't really capture my attention. My partner knew Bloody Well Right and I enjoyed that. The title was pretty good too.
5/10
Not my favorite Supertramp album but still great regardless.
Сара 4 Марко 5
Had higher hopes
5/5
This wasn’t bad but was it as good as some of the best prog bands of the 70s like Pink Floyd or Genesis? No. Just didn’t really stand out to me. Rudy was the clear highlight here
A touch less interesting of a Pink Floyd
Oh I LOVE supertramp. Today is a good day!
I admire how Supertramp defined a vibe with exactitude. It’s not my kind of bar. Sing to the stage lights, theatre kids.
Supertramp can write some pretty tunes, but unfortunately much of this sounded like a wimpier Genesis. Not thrilling.
Great album. Supertramp really did produce some fantastic music in the 70’s
Am I being edged? Every time I feel the songs are going to do something big they start going for it and stop, never reaching the climax. I liked some elements of this, but was often left feeling unsatisfied.
Ive never heard of this band before but their really good. One of the best album ive discovered by this book. That first track had some insane piano work. A great song. The rest is prety good too but the second half is lrss good. if you like progressive rock in general yull like this one. Ill defenitively listen to Breakfast in america sometime.
