CRIME OF THE CENTURY ALBUM LETS GOOOOOOOO First song has a wind instrument like maybe some cowboy sounding harmonica wild west lowkey but then he starts singing all sad father kid relationship? Gets groovier but still sad my favourite it's so bittersweet wtf this is so good Second song is chill summer fun Third song is fire too Fourth starts slow but then becomes brave and heroic, repeat, belting singing so cool and kind of apocalyptic in the rain kind of its so circus film Fifth starts energetic and playful then it becomes more community values lowkey socialism is cool bobo life it's optimistic Sixth is storytelling, rudy, smooth jazzy instrumentals and soothing voice turns more dramatic violin too, cinematic and insane yeahhhh pretty long song but it's poignant Seventh is sad calm Eigth crime of the century masterclass I love it

Have this on CD, it's such a great album and one of the first albums that introduced me to Supertramp. I get nostalgia from 'School', 'Bloody Well Right', and 'Dreamer' from hearing these as a kid

Was surprised, guitar and sax lines sounded BEAUTIFUL Vocals are great, instrumentals are iconic, and a few songs are now in my favourites

One of the best progressive rock albums I've listened to (although I haven't listened to that many). From the harmonica solo that starts off "School" to saxophone solo at the end of "Crime Of the Century", Supertramp puts all aspects of their musical talents for 44 minutes. It only doesn't even sound like rock music at times, but oozes with such creativity and grandness.

Love this one. Uncle Jimmy had this one when it originally came out. I played it constantly.

I wore this record out when it first came out. There was nothing in music at the time that sounded like Supertramp. The fact the it sound quality was so good compared to other albums at the time was a bonus.

God that was such a good listen. I want to shake the creators of this list and be like "SEE? YOU GUYS CAN PICK GOOD ALBUMS FROM THE 70s!!! THEY DON'T ALL HAVE TO BE REPETITIVE HORSE SHIT!!!! CONGRATS BOYS NOW BE A DEAR AND KEEP PUTTING SHIT LIKE THIS" but for all I know the idiots who made this list are like. Dead or something.

Amazing

Fantastic album

Wasn't really interested at the start, but it just clicked for me by the end

RAHHHHHHHHHHHH muito lindo

Came as a great suprise to me! Maybe not really a five but even after a second listen through I was still impressed

Hadn’t heard a couple of the songs and was surprised by that as I've loved the band for a while. Great album

Masterpiece

I’m not even sure what to say about this album. Too many good things to list. The opener, the closer, most of what’s in between.

good but too classy need to know more about band..

Dreamer is on my mum's desert island discs. My mum's got good taste.

Beautiful album from a great band! I have already rated this at 4.5 on RYM so could go either way here, but I reckon I won't be too generous and this can go for strong 4 stars at the very least, definitely not less. P.S. Honestly this really deserves rounding up to 5 stars as well, why not, it is so beautiful.

I'm generally not a fan of pigeonholing, and in particular, I don't think the term “art rock” is very meaningful - it describes an approach to music but says nothing about how an act actually sounds. This is important here because, under the “art rock” category in this project, recordings have already been suggested twice that were simply appallingly bad. Fortunately, that doesn’t apply to Supertramp’s “Crime Of The Century,” even though, in my opinion, it isn’t the best Supertramp album - it’s no coincidence that “Breakfast In America,” suggested by a user, is rated higher by the community. Nevertheless, “Crime Of The Century” clearly sounds exactly as one would expect from Supertramp, and I actually consider it a truly outstanding prog rock album.

This is the type of album I spect on this list. Timeless masterpiece.

Amazing album

This is the album that ive liked the most so far. It has a perfect mixture of the genres i like.

The real crime is that this album isn’t talked about more. This has no flaws to me.

I freakin love this album. I feel like it’s the blueprint of what the album experience should be. Perfect pacing and doesn’t overstay its welcome. 1000000/10

Wow! This one was a terrific surprise. Hadn't really heard much of these guys before and really loved this album! Had a very nice Pink Floyd-meets-Elton John vibe to the sound. Really a great listen. One of my favorite unheard albums in this generator so far!

An album that def benefits from the headphone effect, so many little sounds that may not have been identified on a rush hour rock station. There's a musical saw on track three!!! Asylum is the standout track (so far).

Great album ..a little dark but love the music

Great album. The band is much more than Goodbye Stranger. Is actually rather prog-like with some pretty cool sections.

niceeee!!!!

Pretty alright good harmonica

Very much in my comfort zone. Loved this.

A little theatrical, a little prog, I liked it

this is actually amazing

Really enjoyed listening to this album.

Absolute Banger!

I think it's my first time listing to anything prog-rock. I don't really know a lot about music to understand what elements they used in this album, but it sometimes sounds like a musical, a bit jazzy or something im not quite sure how to describe - and im here for it. The only thing that doesn't work for me in this album are songs longer than 5 minutes, it's probably my fried by the internet brain talking but I lose attention after that mark. But that's my problem not the albums.

Really good album. Fits right in my 70´s Playlist

Remembered every track from 50 years ago. Superb production.

WOW! Blown away. What cool music. Groovy, jazzy, rocky, theatrical, everything. Elton John, Queen, Weather Report. Plenty of keys, lots of fun instrumental and vocal accompanyment. Really gonna have a hard time picking one out here, I guess Crime of the Century! 5/5

Well I grew up listening to this album so every track is amazing to me... so yeah, very biased here. This is why rating albums on this list is kind of meaningless. I get goosebumps by "Asylum" but I get that not every person does that. To someone who haven't grown up with it I would probably say it could sound pretty bland and dreamer could be annoying for people.

Masterclass of Prog Rock, i love supertramp, underrated band

I'm a simple man. I see Supertramp and it's a 5 stars.

Did an immediate relisten of this album after I finished it (first time in near 500 albums I've listened to so far on this list). I noticed the wailing harmonica at the end of the album pretty much connects right back to the very beginning harmonica sound on the first track. Nothing on the album sticks out as much as recognizable hits or anything, but as an album, it is very easy to get lost in front to back as a cohesive project. Maybe Supertramp doesn't live up to Pink Floyd or Electric Light Orchestra or their contemporaries to others, but this album impressed me enough to stand shoulder to shoulder as one of the great projects.

I love so many songs off this album. This is my first time listening to all the songs. This is the music I want when I just want to chill and listen to music. It's easy to just listen to as it keeps your attention enough with the tempo and changes. It has energy but not for dancing, but for movement and feeling th n flow. There's almost a nostalgia with it and makes me think summer or just when hanging at home getting stuff done but you are in a flow state and the music is a stream pushing you along.

Cinematic journey of an album, I once played the closing portion of the title track at immense volume in a forest off grid and it was as good as music can be for me

An absolute sonic masterpiece defined by its clinical precision and immense dynamic range. The production is so clean and well-separated that every element, from the iconic Wurlitzer electric piano to the soaring saxophone, feels vivid and three-dimensional. Its cinematic approach to sound design and atmospheric "vibe" set a benchmark for high-fidelity recording, making it an essential reference for any serious listener.

Casi todo temazos

A good group I didn't know anything about, I will listen carefully their 3 first albums, but from what I've heard of this one, they deserve a 5.

This is one of the best albums of all time. Front to back perfection. Supertramp would add more sax and more wurlitzer down the line, but the balance here is just sublime. I own an original pressing of this album on vinyl. That's how much it means to me.

Title track da brividi ancora adesso.

You're Bloody Well Right. imo some of the best of Supertramp lacking the oft overplayed goodbye stranger and give a little bit (not my favorite songs of theirs)

This is a superb album.

Rocky and Bullwinkle

What a lovely afternoon

Supertramp. Is good music 👍🏻👍🏻

Album #78 Supertramp: Crime of the Century It was only 10 albums ago, on album number 68, when I started losing faith in the quality of this list. I had received one too many 90s electronic albums, one too many mediocre rap albums, and one too many “decent but not essential” old British albums, but then something started to change. Over my last 10 albums, I haven’t given out a score less than a four. I’ve been greeted with old favourites such as Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello, and have been introduced to new favourites like Sade, and easily my favourite new album that I have discovered from this list, Sigur Rós. After listening to Ágætis Byrjun, I thought that surely my luck would end; there is no possible way to keep the momentum rolling in a forward progression. Then today, for my 78th album, I received my favourite album of all time, by my favourite band of all time: Crime of the Century by Supertramp. It’s hard for me to speak about Supertramp objectively because of what they have meant to me. Growing up, I never really connected with music. The popular music of the time was mostly rap/trap music, and that seemed to be all anyone I knew listened to. I tried to engage with it and understand, but ultimately, it made me feel nothing, and since that was the only music I was surrounded by, I just had the assumption that I wasn’t a big music guy. Along with that, during elementary school, I actually failed music class, my only ever time failing a class, because my music teacher had such resentment towards me that I began to associate my distaste for her with the prospect of learning music. It wasn’t until my transition into high school that I started to actually establish a relationship with music. I finally got my first phone, and shortly after, I downloaded Spotify. Since I knew I didn’t relate to modern popular music, I decided to listen to Classic Rock playlists (something that I knew I liked because of Grand Theft Auto radio), since I couldn’t afford premium, I was at the whim of Spotify to decide what I listened to. I amassed a collection of hit songs from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Boston, etc, but never did I venture too far out of greatest hits. I even added Supertramp’s most famous track, “Give a Little Bit”, to my playlist, but it wasn’t until I heard “The Logical Song” for the first time that my mind was truly blown by music. I had never heard anything like it, the piano and saxophone creating such a unique collision of sound which is impossible to find on any other classic rock record, Roger Hodgson’s eternally relatable lyrics about the struggles of conformity, even the dynamic album cover seemed to pop out like no other; everything about the music just seemed to stand out, like a bright star in a dying universe. For almost a year, I listened exclusively to Supertramp and memorized every song from their five prime albums, though for that period my favourite of the bunch was Breakfast in America. As time has gone on, I have found myself leaning towards Crime of the Century as their masterpiece. This review has already dragged and I haven’t even discussed the music, but that is because for me this band/album has become part of my identity, so I often think of the music in my memories rather than through an analytical lens. What I will say, though, is that no album has ever portrayed the transition into adulthood quite like this one. Finding yourself seems to be the theme for many Supertramp songs, Breakfast in America, of course, with the Logical Song, Child of Vision, and Gone Hollywood to name a few, mostly centred around finding your identity in and amongst how others view you/ how the world expects you to be. Even in The Quietest Moments, with songs like Fool’s Overture, Babaji, and Downstream, Roger’s songs tend to focus on finding one’s identity through spirituality, and Rick’s songs are more about finding one’s identity through love. Crime of the Century, to me, however, is where Supertramp perfected the sonically equivalent to an identity crisis (what crisis?). I view the album as a concept album, with each song expanding on the next, focusing on what it is like for the average person to find their way in this world. The opening track, School, tells of someone who never fit in at school; he simply wasn’t good enough or smart enough, to the point where his schooling has abandoned him. Bloody Well Right‘s opening line, “So you think your schooling is phony”, immediately branches off of that, and the rest of the song represents the anger around how artificial success is when it comes to school (and life in general), saying it depends on nepotism and politics. If Bloody Well Right was the representation of rage towards one’s circumstance, then Hide in Your Shell is the defence mechanism; potentially one of the most beautiful-sounding songs of all-time, it encapsulates the feeling of being beaten down by the world so much to the point where you strip yourself of all ambitions as to not let it hurt you anymore. Asylum and Dreamer are both songs which present the world trying to keep you in that state, saying you are crazy and it is your fault, and that you would simply be a dreamer to strive for anything and to stay in your lane. Rudy is where the album reaches its climax, a harrowing tale of depression, our subject gets an identity, a man named Rudy, who serves to be the everyman. He’s on a train to nowhere, his life directionless and meaningless. The line “after all the hours he’s wasted, still he needs time” is the key to unlocking the album for me. This is a concept which the vast majority of folk born into nothing can understand; living in your head to escape your reality, dreaming of another life but having no idea how to achieve it. We are all Rudy, every one of us who was meant for more but instead spent the years riding a train with no destination. Suddenly, the song stops painting him as a pitiful scourge and instead attempts to light a fire within him to escape his situation, an anthemic chant encourages him to gain control, and finally, we feel as though we can escape this purgatory! But suddenly, the optimism fades, Rudy walks out of the movie and simply gets back on his train. Though this album sonically is very bright at times, the lyrics remain comfortably pessimistic. The last two tracks tie it all together; If Everyone Was Listening tells of suffering through the play that is life as an actor, until eventually meeting your demise: being the last clown on stage when the curtain falls. By the time the closing track hits, we are already dead, our lives amounting to nothing; thus, the closure serves as an epilogue. It tells of the men in power who have created such a tragic dichotomy of existence, who have “raped the universe”, the fact that some men can live so low, while others feed off of their misery. But Supertramp put a face to these larger-than-life figures, for they remove their masks in the closing lines of the album, and who is found beneath? You and me. Human beings are all capable of greatness, and we are also all capable of nothingness, but that should be up to us to decide; the fact that those born into power control the lives of others is the universe’s greatest injustice, or rather, the crime of the century. Best Songs: All of them Worst Song: None Score out of 10: 11

Original artistic a sonic beauty

Probably the best boomer music I’ve ever heard, if I’m honest. Instrumentation is a proper 10/10. It doesn’t have the gravitas (or for that matter, angst) of Dark Side in my opinion, but the level of pizazz here is just stupendous. I’ve never heard a single track on this album before, but I’ll definitely do a cover to cover again in the future.

This album is a goated album in my book. Nostalgic factor, but I find the songwriting to be so catchy. Big fan

I’m at a 10. I mean, it’s just because “Crime of the Century” feels like a perfect closing track for the whole thing. The entire album’s crusade against authority with Rudy leading the way, only to realize that he was alone in that crusade the whole time, with everyone else upholding the status quo in their own ways… it’s really well done, and “Crime of the Century” as a sort of dour closing instrumental with a lot of weight behind it, built up brilliantly over the course of the album, makes its somber little sax solos & percussive drops feel like punches to the gut, in a good way. I’ve only ever really known Supertramp as the “Goodbye Stranger” band, and I was fully expecting to see “Breakfast in America” on the list, given the acclaim it has. I’m very glad the book’s editors picked this one (although “Breakfast in America” could’ve probably still been in, I dunno), as it’s a really strong showcase of some Pink Floyd-esque prog rock. It’s not as conceptually tight as “Dark Side of the Moon” is, given the loose tissue connecting these tracks & a minimal amount of transitions, but it more than makes up for it with some clever writing & allegories. “Bloody Well Right” feels prescient as hell in a world of incompetent nepo babies & evil billionaires, and the monologue that starts “Crime of the Century” feels especially apt given some recent revelations about online astroturfing in a certain set of files. The strength of the writing just really makes each track that much better to me. It also helps that these are fantastic instrumentals. Sure, there’s not a crazy sick / iconic guitar solo I can point to here (though there are some really good piano / sax solos), but this album knows when to lift up instrumentals & drop them perfectly, in a way where the pacing of each track feels more thought out & intentional at points. Getting that push/pull right in a way that gives the listener some heavy dopamine is something a lot of ‘70s albums have struggled with, and thankfully, it’s something that most prog bands seem to get right. In this case, with Supertramp, it’s honestly comparable to Yes’s “Close to the Edge”, though on a smaller & less bombastically technical scale. Ironically, this album is longer than “Close to the Edge”, but that’s just a testament to how good Yes is. Of course, I’ve probably overanalyzed this album in my own way, as it never takes itself THAT seriously while listening, which is honestly another point toward the album. “Dark Side” isn’t pretentious or anything, not by a long shot, but that feeling of “art rock” never fully shakes itself, especially with the reputation it has. This is just really fun prog rock with loosely serious theming behind it, but relatively lighthearted tones throughout. When it wants to feel deeper, it knows how to reach that point musically; it never stays in it for too long to feel obnoxious, and it always lifts back up to touch the soul in just the right way. Ultimately, I think it’s an album that knows what it wants to say & says it very well. I’m more inclined to enjoy things that feel definitive & answered, and perhaps that’s part of the reason while I feel more inclined to give this a 10 as opposed to Dark Side getting a “something above a 5”. Dark Side has a million different interpretations within its framework of a life well lived, but this album seems to have a pretty clear one: overreaching authority sucks, try to fight it the best you can, and even if you feel like you can’t truly win against it, someday, if everyone is listening & trying to fight it, maybe there’s hope to get it done in the future. Past that, it’s just a really fun 44 minutes, and I can’t say there’s a bad track here. The floor is a 3 if you just don’t like prog to begin with, but for me, it feels like a deserved 10. It just clicked with me really, really well. Thank goodness it’s on the list.

Dang ok this album rocks love nearly all the songs. Some of them are ungodly long but many of them are worth it.

I knew many of these songs but never realized they were on the same album. The song Crime of the Century is a completely underrated gem.

Great album, School and Dreamer are my favourites. Need a new copy though, my LP has to much noise.

Prachtig, top album, zeker een must listen

Not so guilty, guilty pleasures!

Very good

I was aware of Supertramp, and knew the obvious hits, but this is the first time I have listened to an entire studio album of theirs, and it's awesome. Supertramp straddle the line between Prog Rock and contemporary Pop, and focusing a great deal on keyboards. Already the opener, School, is extremely gripping, but every single song on here is its own thing, variation is great. School, Dreamer (of course), and Rudy are just a few songs I'd recommend, and Crime of the Century's Keyboard Riff is living in my head rent free; it's so good. The mood is melancholy and, at times, reminds me of the early Marillion albums. This is the kind of stuff stuff why I'm doing this project. 5/5

Criminally funky

Lowkey theatrical.

I love supertramp, multiple bangers on this album with that Supertramp sound…

British progressive pop. Great musicians led Roger Hodgson's voice and Rick Davies. I enjoy the longer more progressive songs like School and Rudy.

3/3. Heard this album many times growing up, still love it today. Hodgson and Davies voices contrast so well, the keyboards are top-tier, as are the arrangements. Some really groovy songs and thoughtful lyrics as well. A classic for sure.

I actually liked this album, along with the song ‘Dreamer’

absolutely incredible!! loved so many songs on this album

At first, I was like ehhh this is so randomly orchestrated I don’t think I’m going to like this but it’s definitely not bad. But then I don’t know what happened but it became so beautifully done instrumentally. I genuinely can’t believe how much better the second half of this album is and how much it made my opinion change. Will be listening in the future.

Wonderful

First time I’ve given supertramp a proper listen and I’ve been missing out

No, I'm sorry, but you can't make prog rock that actually sounds pleasant and considers the audience's entertainment. And if you are a boomer rock band and the first lyric on your album is "I can see you in the morning when you go to school", it needs to either be some creepy perv thing, or Pink Floyd's po-faced Wall. Jokes aside, I'm really enjoying this mix of prog and pop-rock. This album has the ambitious scope of 7-minute developmental tracks. But it also has absolute ear worms and grooves. It has little fragments of jazz rock. The singing and songwriting are solid. The whole record is as clear and crisp and rich and detailed. All 8 songs are solid, and the sequencing of the album is solid, with the A-side and B-side equally strong in different ways. Big surprise album for me, having only listened to one of their later albums a couple of times. 5*

Bangers

I already know I love this yo

Super surprised at how much I enjoyed this!

One of my all time favorite albums

Supertramp has been a favorite since my dad played them when I was younger, though it was always their greatest hits. Now, at this stage in life, diving into their actual albums gives me a whole new perspective. Supertramp has a great balanced blend of instrumentation, particularly making the saxophone, harmonica, and piano stand out. The dual vocals of Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are another highlight that really elevates their sound. Technically, one thing I really give Supertramp credit for is their seamless way of switching the direction of their songs. They manage smooth transitions between different sections while keeping a cohesive core theme and unified whole, avoiding abrupt musical shifts or disjointed pieces. I love how they incorporate complex prog rock characteristics, yet keep it all within a pop rock sensibility, making it easy for just about anyone to enjoy.

I was happy to see this today. Been meaning to give it a full listen. I used to kind of scoff at Supertramp when I was a kid. Sometimes when me and my friends would drop acid I'd randomly ask "What's up with Supertramp?" to make them all laugh. But these days I think Breakfast In America is a masterpiece and this one is up there. Their songs are cinematic but not in an overblown way, the music just evokes images that illustrate the themes of the lyrics. I think "School" is good example of this. I've heard "Bloody Well Right" so many times that it's actually wrapped around from being "that song again" to a fresh listen.

Classic progressive rock album, wonderful from start to finish.

This is the first album I got on here that i own on vinyl, I absolutely adore this album. A prog rock masterpiece, so so beautiful. There is not a track I would skip. Long epic instrumentals, incredible vocals, everything blends together so perfectly. I could listen to this album a hundred more times. Standout Songs: All of them

How have I got this far in my life and not listened to much Supertramp. Absolutely blew me away. Great album with absolutely no skips.

Really liked the keys on this one. Definitely got groggy and rock opera-y but that's alright because kept it in the groove allot

This album is epic. I had no idea Supertramp could rock so hard. I love the the way the piano drives the tracks forward. I love the cinematic, orchestral moments and the brassy interludes. Vocals are all spot on. Chord changes are always interesting and intelligent. The tunes are almost a more accessible version of prog rock. The Kinks meet Yes. You know an album is good when the tracks are all on the long side and yet you dont ever feel like they are dragging on. 100% an album that is getting a second spin. Favourite track - hard to say, i loved them all for different reasons. Maybe School or Crime of the Century. 9/10

I always think of Supertramp as the band I described to my mom when I couldn’t think of the name as, “you know that band that’s like ELO, but it’s not?” and she knew immediately what I meant. This is a fantastic prog album and deserves to be on the list, but if we’re operating under the assumption, as this list is, that Supertramp deserves only one album here, then how in the hell did this make it over Breakfast In America??? That is far and away the superior album, and the fact it isn’t on this list is a travesty! With all that being said, this is still a 5 star album. Great songs and some of the best prog rock you’ll hear. Not a weak moment.

The greatest!

One of my all-time favorite albums! I bought other Supertramp albums after this one, but none of them rocked my world like this one did. Like it as much at 66 as I did at 17!

Forgot about this band!

Of course it would come from early '70s. Pulled out Bloody Well Right from the start at the top song. Goes through three very interesting sound changes, and groove in the whole time. Dreamer reminded me of Styx.

Wow. Better than I remembered!

Fantastic. One of my all time favorites.

Amazing sound of the seventies

This was fantastic. Beautiful guitar sounds, drummer was superb. Really reminded of king crimson, a bit of yes, even some Zappa esq moments. Long musical interludes and some great lyrics

PROOOOOG

I already know that I adore this album.

Haters in shambles, they stay pickin' the corn outta my shit Will I listen to again: 100%

c;assic. Excelent. Still relevant today!

The actual crime of the century is not having more Supertramp on this list.

Supertramp's third album finds the band hitting their stride, delivering a confidently-executed rock record that contains exceptional songs which incorporate progressive elements while keeping the pop hooks ever-present. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson's songs are sophisticated and smartly-constructed - even when there are long instrumental passages, they serve the songs well. Their lyrics are vivid, relatable and pack an emotional punch. In addition, the crisp production on this record is a perfect match for the songs and sounds fresh even today.

Awesome prog rock. Loved it when it came out, still enjoy it in this day.

School, Bloody well right, Dreamer und Crime of the century extrem gut. Schlechte Lieder nicht vorhanden. Prog Elemente, aber dennoch eingängig. Album ist ja ein Klassiker.

Love Supertramp

I’d only heard about half of these songs before. I’ve missed out! This is great all the way through and may become one of my favorite prog rock albums.

At times this record has been derided as lightweight Floyd, or in some other way derivative. I would only say, just listen to it.

Fabulous album.

What a delightful album! All the layers on this record add a very impressive atmosphere, so interesting and deep. It is mostly like a cinematographic experience. This album is so immersive, perfectly developed, with so much care and subtlety. I've loved listening to it, it is such an extraordinary, immersive, fragile, deep and pleasurable experience. I have no words for how great this album is. I mean, it is fantastic, a ten out of ten, there is nothing bad here, everything feels so cohesive and magnificent. I love this album. It is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. And it is such a pleasure to have discovered it today.

Musically and lyrically powerful. Has the melancholy and energy of Pink Floyd, but in a more orchestral arrangement.

Masterpiece

Very fun bluesy start to the album with the harmonica in "School" and the beat of "Bloody Well Right". This thread ended up continuing through the whole album, I really enjoyed the piano heavy instrumentation. Forgot how hard Dreamer bangs. I was very surprised overall, I was expecting some pretty generic classic rock which can be hard to be actively listening to for a whole album. I had no problems staying engaged.

"Now they're planning the crime of the century Well what will it be?" "Bloody Well Right", "Hide In Your Shell" and "Dreamer" are three of the best songs of the 70's. Breakfast In America will always be Supertramp's most popular album, and there are incredible songs there, but none of it ever hits the same highs as the three previously mentioned songs from Crime of the Century. Honestly, every song on this album rules. When you're worst song is "Rudy", it's hard not to argue "perfect" album. Ken Scott's production on the album is stellar. The musical textures on "Bloody Well Right" are incredible. The arrangements are complex, but never oversaturated, always clear and never overbearing. Most of the lyrics and themes are about existential dissatisfaction, systematic oppression, being shackled to the workforce, social anxieties, but there's an optimistic light shining through, a longing for human connection delivered with Roger Hodgson's bright vocals trying to pull you through the darkness. Not to discount Rick Davies grittier vocals, which I also love. This album is really a 4.5 for me, but I'm rounding up! Unrelated: if you look at pics of Rick Davies and Rodger Hodgson from the 70's, they both look like variations of White Jesus.

Pink floyd_ish vibes lead to a wonderful finale. Very strong.

Candidly, I already love Supertramp and some of the songs on this album. I've been aware of Crime of the Century but didn't give it a proper listen. This is a phenomenal album. I was really teetering between a 4 or a 5 but the highs of this album along with the hits just bring it up to that 5 level. I just love Rick Davies' vocals and piano and the the orchestral bits are real fun too. Excited for Breakfast in America

This is a record of my youth. I was 14 when this came out and in 9th grade. I am unabashedly a fan of this record. Not because it’s special in the context of a number of records I can think of, but rather because I associate it with so many good times and formative experiences- school dances, being a school DJ in the Yukon, making out with L.R. (and later D.J.B) in the back seat of my buddy’s Chevy Camero and my Chevy Nova. Drinking Beers with my friends at the Yukon Inn where the drinking age was 12. School, Bloody Well Right, Dreamer, Rudy and Crime if the Century were played endlessly on the local radio station. I would not be surprised if they are all still are in the Top 10 in Whitehorse. This was a massive record in Canada. Hide In Your Shell with it’s Queen like harmonies should also have been a hit. I had an 8-Track of this which played on repeat in my car. At home I played both sides about equally because the first two tracks on each side are indisputably hits. Side 1 with School and Bloody Well Right. Side 2 with Dreamer and Rudy. Asylum is in my mind an Elton John song with Rick Davies giving a strong vocal performance. Davies and Roger Hodgsen were a formidable vocal duo on this record with Hodgsen the lead on the hits, but Davies a powerful vocalist in his own right. In my opinion, this record is near perfect for what it is - a record that soundtracked my high school experience. It is with that fondness that makes this a perfect record. It is everything that a great record has - its impact on the listener is such that you can hear a song and are instantly transported. In my case to the back seat of a Chevy Camero parked at the edge of the Yukon River making out with …

Glad I tapped back in during this album. I really like it. Reminds me a bit of the more melancholy Bowie, thinking Five Years type beat. I really like the piano in Crime of the Century. Bloody Well Right is sick as fuck.

The first side of this album will always be a 5 for me. I don't even care about the other side. It is better than I remember, but I've been obsessed with the first side since I was in my teens. I think it was the album art that drew me in and the lyrics about existential dread is what keeps me going back.

Yeah, I love this. It's great. Hide in your Shell, Rudy and Asylum are the standouts.

Why is the recording of this so good? So dynamic. Bloody Well Right! Yeah, this is a good album with amazing production value. The title track was melting my face. Great final track for the album

This album is a lot of fun, and each track works together very well. As a unit, I may like "Crime of the Century" more than "Breakfast in America," although I probably prefer more tracks on the latter album. As for a favorite track, it's a tight race between "School," "Bloody Well Right," and "Crime of the Century"

Surprisingly delightful

MASTERPIECE 6/5 GUD VA JAG ÄLSKADE DETTA ALBUM

I was not feeling in the best of moods the day I listened to this album. However the minute the very unique and distinctive sound of Supertramp started playing it lifted my spirits and bought a smile to my face. I do like this group very much.

Supertramp goes Moody Blues, I dig it

Excellent keyboards, all male vocal harmonies plus some saxophone and clarinet. Overall reminds me of Pink Floyd. Theramin on Hide in Your Shell?

Yes yes yes!

My surprise of the week is rating this formerly unbeknownst album (to me) a 5, for each song featured a lot of talent and re-listenability.

🤌🤌🤌🤌

A Milestone of Rock

What a great album. The songs are so good. I don’t know why School is my favorite song. Wish these guys produced more albums, they were so good

A wonderful album, full of strength and epic. If you make a 8 track album they better all be solid and worthy of a listen, and that is more than archived here, there's nothing that feels out of place, like it shouldn't be there. Sonically it's quite rich, a lot of killer base line (school) and cool sax (Rudy) sweeping violin (If everyone was listening) and gorgeous piano that builds (Asylum). The most impressive part is that this album is a debut, and the fact that they continued to make music, (that I'm hoping is as good, but at least more popular) is truly a feat. Who drops a masterpiece on their first try and keeps going ? I knew some songs of Supertramp, everybody does, but never listened to a full album and I'm glad I gave it a shot. It's really really good, and will stay on my rotation.

⭐️Asylum

BLOODY WELL RIGHT

Apparently a lot of people dont like this and prefer pink floyd. For me the opposite, I dont really get the fuss about Pink Floyd and this is just good music with a unique sound.

School,Dreamer,Rudy and my personal favourite Crime of the century to name a few from this amazing album,They still have the prog elements that i love in this 3rd gem.

****** Supertramp are heroes of mine - this album is fantastic

Near perfect production value on this album - I use this album (LP) to test out new speakers and amps.

Nog good

love it I heard the whole album four times today it's awesome :)

I fucking love this album man

solid all the way through

One of my favorite albums

What a rocker. Love Asylum.

I have a great LP of Breakfast in America framed in my hallway. I came to Supertramp a bit late - I'm only really familiar with this album and the aforementioned Breakfast in America. Orchestral, prog, radio-friendly rock is a bit of a soft spot. Slightly more upbeat than Pink Floyd, but not a million miles off. School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, and Dreamer are the standout tracks. Absolutely love the quiet and loud moments, and each track is wonderfully distinct.

Not the Best Supertramp Album, but a great album.

Ok so here's the thing. Breakfast in America by Supertramp is my number one favorite album of all time so naturally I'm a little bummed that it's not on this list... HOWEVER, I still absolutely ADORE this album and am thrilled that it was included. It's easily they're second best album and is just loaded with fantastic songs. There's not a single skip here. Only bangers. Here's how I would rank the songs: 1. Dreamer 2. School 3. Asylum 4. Rudy 5. Hide In Your Shell 6. Bloody Well Right 7. If Everyone Was Listening 8. Crime Of The Century

Godly absaloute classic

🎩 What It Sounds Like: • Piano-led existential crises • Saxophones that appear just in time to underscore your deepest regrets • Lyrical spirals about school, madness, and alienation—but arranged so pristinely you don’t notice you’re emotionally unraveling It’s polished. It’s dramatic. It’s… slightly unhinged in a symphonic way. ⸻ 🧪 Rating: 4.3 / 5 📀 Short Review: Crime of the Century is like being scolded by a genius in a dream sequence. It floats, it punches, and it occasionally leans too hard into its own melancholy—but always with flawless chord progressions.

Musically, the best Supertramp album (not my favorite one). Amazing to listen to, quite different from the other prog rock. Wonderful. 4.5/5

I can see why this is one of Dad's favourites. Each song builds through so many musical stages. Really enjoyed it.

Irresistible grooves in a cohesive package; a masterpiece. Love it.

Not much to say about this one. It's art pop/rock that works exceptionally well. Supertramp has a strange back catalog that varies from competent but dull to brilliant Crime of the Century is brilliant. Lend an ear it would be criminal not to!

Great album despite only one hit

What can we say about this band, it’s simply one of the best that there’s ever been

This album has so much nostalgia for me. I grew up in a prog household. My first gig was Barclay James Harvest, I've seen ELO Part 2 multiple times, Floyd and Roger Hodgson amongst many others. I remember listening to this album on vinyl through my dad's over ear headphones and in the car on long drives. I think that School is a fantastic opener to an album, the launch into Bloody Well Right is just brilliant. This is the first album where Supertramp feel like they have their own sound. You sometimes hear people refer to them as a poor mans Floyd and I think that's unfair. Yes, it has a lot of the winding elements that we hear on Dark Side of the Moon that came out a year before but it's still its own album and sound, but it has shades of The Wall years before its release. The way Davies voice has us spiralling down in Asylum and then you flip the record over to side B. That second side opener with Dreamer just hits hard and then we come back down with Rudy which is a musical whirlwind. Things I particularly love, the alternating between Hodgson and Davies on each track, every instrument is perfectly balanced, Siebenberg's drums are perfect and his skill as a percussionist really does bring this album together IMO. Every track feels like a conversation between the two vocalists and I think that the differences between Hodgson and Davies and the way they lean into this are really are what make Supertramp special. Some people hate this album and I think they probably mostly hate prog and concept albums and that's fine. For me, this album tells a story, it flows together beautifully and thematically and takes you on a musical tour. I can lose myself in this album. That long winding end to Crime of the Century that finished with the harmonica echoing from the opening to School is a master stroke and so easily missed. This is a 5/5 for me. If I was alive in 1974 and listened to this for the first time, I would flip the album and play it straight back from the beginning.

Oh sweet mamma jamma that was delicious! This is the exact reason you participate in a project like this, to expose yourself to incredible music that so clearly should have been taught to you from a young age but society failed you haha. So good!!

One of my favorite records, and one of the first "adult" records I owned. In 1974 I was 9. I don't think I heard this until I was 12 or so, but "Dreamer" was a constant in our house.

Great album by a great band! Loved it then, love it now!

I've never had the pleasure of listening to a complete Supertramp album before, but as someone that grew up through the 70's and 80's I've obviously heard many of their more well known tracks. This album was excellent. I enjoyed every single track and had to listen again straight afterwards, as it was that good.

A obra prima do Supertramp.

He llorado.

Supertramp! Heck yeah! I haven't given many "this was already in my music library" five star ratings yet, so this is a special occasion! 🥳 (Supertramp are in my top 50 all time artists on last.fm, at #39, so this was a foregone conclusion. Just wait until the one album from my number one most listened artist turns up!)

Absolutely fantastic in so many ways. So many classics it's insane. Maybe even better than Breakfast in America. About 15 years ago I had the idea of using the second half of the "Crime of the Century" song as a movie score (from about 2:07) - it's unlikely I'll ever get to do it, but hopefully someone does!

Bridging the gap between prog and pop. School, Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are the hits but If Everyone Was Listening and Crime of the Century close off the album beautifully and make you turn the volume right up. Easy five stars

Brought back wonderful memories of my teenage years

Innocent!

I love to see that some people hate this record because it sounds like a mix of Queen, Pink floyd, Elton John and Steely Dan, and that's exactly the reason why I like it! First time listening to it, I found it incredible, from start to end. And it sounds amazing, top notch production

Banger album. Only heard Dreamer before, decent song, but the entire album as a whole was great. Intro kicked it into space, felt like Pink Floyd inspired? Not sure about the timeline. Use of all the different instruments was amazing to listen to.

Supertramp can be a hit or a miss for me. This one is a definite hit. Great from start to finish and well recorded.

superfun!

Dad Rock at tit's finest

The best

Varied, catchy, layered, fantastic.

First listen. Wow! Enjoyed this one.

Absolute banger legend

Just found a new favorite song in "Hide in your shell"!

Fantastic album.

Already loved this album, so this listen did not disappoint. Standout songs include: School, Hide in Your Shell, Crime of the Century

Wow - would be a crime not to listen to this

Love this. I already knew all but one of the tracks, and they're all great.

From the very first notes, it is clear that Supertramp has taken a different approach with this album compared to their first two. It feels as if every note has been meticulously considered, and much more attention has been paid to the overall sound. And even more, the lyrics are outstanding! "Crime Of The Century" comes close to a perfect album. Every composition is strong, and Davies and Hodgson complement each other lyrically well in terms of seriousness and lightness. The arrangements are beautiful—complete with saxophone and strings—and the overall sound is nearly flawless. While it is not a concept album, it feels like a cohesive piece from the first note to the last. The only criticism is that the album doesn’t feel very spontaneous. Every note seems predetermined, leaving little room for deviation. This is evident in the live performances and bonus tracks as well.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Great musicality, original lyrics and an overall very polished production.

Oh my god the instrumentals are awesome! The vibes are great, the lyrics are great. This is a very good album.

This approach ensured that only the most polished performances made it onto the final cut. - **Sound Design:** The incorporation of sound effects—such as schoolyard noises in "School" and train sounds in "Rudy"—adds a cinematic quality to the album. Its intricate lyrics, innovative music production, and exploration of timeless themes contribute to its enduring legacy. Despite some criticisms regarding pacing or mainstream appeal, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. This album not only reflects a pivotal moment in Supertramp's career but also continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners alike.

This is an album

Seria o melhor supertramp ?

Super creative progressive pop full of unexpected moments that fit the music perfectly. Probably Supertramp's best album - which is saying a lot for band that pretty much only made good music.

I really enjoyed this. Not sure if it's a concept album but felt like one. Lots of range. Big scope. Catchy. Soulful. Supertramp fan!

LOVED THIS ALBUM. Huge fan of the loud bombastic orchestra sounds.

Absolute gold.

Loved this. Very 70s. Like a manic, less introspective Pink Floyd.

The crime of the century is that I’m just now hearing this cinematic masterpiece in audio form.

Awesome

amazing. every song has such interest and depth. i've always though of supertramp as bland 70s dad rock, but this album is so fun and unique

A classic album.....

Zanimljivo, nisam nikad ovo slušala, samo Breakfast in America. Možda znam neke pjesme ovako rendom, bumo vidli. Lajkam! 🙏🏻

I love it!

Totally unique, wonderful, and vibrant rock album. Very pleasantly surprised by this one. Love the harmonica, piano, guitar, lyrics; all of it. Just hits right. I don’t know how the replay value will be. Standouts: everything but Dreamer.

Great stuff.

p much every part of this is engineered for maximum front to back Delight from myself! sparkling, soaring, winding proggy pop rock with a ton of big color and drama, synths and saxophones, hyper-melodic at all turns. plays at turns like a less glammy more dreamy ziggy stardust, a less monochromatic pink floyd, or a harder-edged moody blues, but i think this created whole new itches i dont even know how to articulate yet. tons of theatrical imagination without ever being overbearing, which i wouldnt have minded but which would have compromised the surprisingly cozy and warm quality this has too. a real gem for me, deffo time to stop overlooking this band!

So horny

"You're bloody well right!"

Damn close to a masterpiece. 4.75

Kinda feel like I gotta give this a 5 because I just enjoyed it the whole way through! Didn’t really know what to expect bc I only know the big big hits but i was so pleasantly surprised! It’s just fun.

But Breakfast in America is Better

I was surprised at how many of these songs I knew so I investigated and I had an album called The Very Best of Supertramp which I listened to a ton. 6 of the 8 songs on this album are on that compilation. So naturally, really loved it.

This is an easy 5/5 for me. An album I know well and play constantly (according to my Roon count) Whilst I am (obviously) an out and out prog rock guy I only consider Supertramp to be on the fringes of prog. If you dig deep into their albums there are some great prog cuts but also some great toe tapping pop songs. This album probably has more of them than most. But by the fact that I keep spinning this album and never tire of it is testament to how much I rate it. 5/5 6/9/24

Dude I love Supertramp. They’re so creatively different. Ok, maybe they’re not the first to do what they do, but still, they do it SO WELL. When I found out a long time ago that Breakfast In America and Logical Song were by the same band I was dumbfounded. How could a band make two of my favorite songs? Preposterous! Anyways, since then I’ve really dived in to their discography, and every bit of it is incredible. Not as incredible as Breakfast In America but still. It’s all good. Ok enough swooning. This album is just as great. It’s filled with tunes that’ll make you jump and lyrics that’ll make you laugh and cry. Well I may be exaggerating there. But School, Bloody Well Right, Asylum, Dreamer, ugh! Every song on this record is incredible I can’t gush anymore. Review over.

Just incredible. Perfect mix of pros, pop, rock and nostalgia. 4.5

Outstanding, one of the best albums ever.

A classic

This album is super cool, love the sax and soft/electronic piano keys throughout the album. It gives the album a much softer and digestible listen than a hard rock album

Love this album. Manages to blend pop and prog effortlessly, lots of high points here such as School, Hide in your Shell, If Everyone was Listening and the title track.

supertramp!!

Magnífico

Supertramp is one of the best to do it, and this album shows it. Every song hits. The singles like Bloody Well Right and Dreamer are great singles, but then songs like Asylum or If Everyone Was Listening also hit just as hard. The harmonica that starts off the album echoes out and gets to ready for a spectacular album. Will listen to 100+ times more in my life

Rock, 1974 ->5

Really enjoyed this one. It's so 70s. I enjoyed every second of it.

Man, I love Supertramp. I knew Bloody Well Right and Dreamer already, but the other tracks are new to me, and I love them all. Five stars for awesome Supertramp goodness.

Takes me back

Amazing

Love it. Love the sound of Supertramp.

Perfect album.

Crime not to give this album 5 stars

This to me is a definite 5 star A+ album. Supertramp, like Queen, had an original and distinctive sound that gave relief to us in the disco era of the mid 70's.

Surprisingly fire. Surprisingly groovy. Did not expect this to go hard like it did. I’m skeptical to give it a 5 because it’s so new sound wise to me but it hit so hard, why did this go so hard?!

Supertramp is one of my all time favorite bands. This is the album that got me into them. There is not a single song on this album that is anything less than a great song. The opener is incredibly strong, featuring a brilliant piano solo played by Rick Davies. 'Bloody Well Right' shows off the remarkable musicianship of the band. The well known Roger Hodgson penned hits 'Dreamer' and 'Hide In You Shell' are both earworms that introduce Hodgson as a leading force in the world of popular music. They are rivaled by the musical journey that is 'Rudy' and the epic closer 'Crime Of The Century', both written by Rick Davies. My pick for best song on the album though is one with not nearly the attention that any of the forementioned songs gained. The Davies written 'Asylum'. It is a song that hold special significance for me as it was pretty much the soundtrack to my life several years ago. Whenever I hear this song, it takes me back, in a strangely nostalgic way, even though the time it takes me back to was not in anyway pleasant. The song has many interpretations, but to me and to my life, it is a tale of a man in desperate denial, slowly loosing his mind. The raucous coda of the song is the highlight of the album for me. Manic chord progression and hectic vocals set the scene for a spectacular finale to the song. This is a magnificent album. Listen to this, and then listen to every other Supertramp album. They are worth every second. 5/5

One of my favorite albums

I’m so blown away by how awesome this album is

Supertramp makes really good fun music. It's not the best thing I have ever heard, but I had a lot of fun listening to it. This made me want to check out some of their lesser known albums after listening to this one. 4.5

A great combo of early Genesis and pre disco Bee Gees and Beatles.

Always loved Supertramp and 'Dreamer' was one of my favourite songs as a kid so I enjoyed this a lot.

Brilliant choice of instruments! Great band and album for originality!

Great album.

10/10. Not a bad song on the album. Almost put them all on the 5⭐️ list. Maybe was missing that “wow” factor track as I was leaning a 9, but too good and consistent all the way through to not get a 10.

I'm not sure why I had categorized Supertramp in my mind as Hair Metal but that's what I was expecting when I turned this album on. But much to my surprise it is more in the Pink Floyd psychedelic classic rock lane. I very much enjoyed this listen. The production value is high. It's sophisticated. It feels unique enough to stand on it's own but not so much that it feels quirky. Definitely piqued my interest in this band and I'll need to look into their work further.

Have loved the song School since I was 18 <3

Really unique and deserves its place on the list

Beautiful piano on Bloody Well Right. And Crime of the Century is absolutely haunting. Love this album.

I bought this in 1974, it was one of the first I ever bought. Marvellous. The intro to 'School' was a revelation. 'Bloody well right' was my son's introduction to swearing in public. I love this album.

Great album!

I heard of the group. None of their songs come to mind immediately.

I actually really enjoyed this album. I was expecting to like it being a prog rock fan, but in surprised how much I liked every song. Will definitely check out more Supertramp

I got into classic rock during high school, including Supertramp, and everybody knew it. My girlfriend at the time, who was part of her school's radio club, made me a mixed tape of Supertramp's greatest hits. I'm pretty sure my older sister bought me Crime of the Century (on cassette) for my 16th birthday. It was 1995 folks - which means I was coming in decades later...and still listening to cassettes despite cd's being a thing then. Their greatest hits are dominated by this album and Breakfast in America, but both are awesome. Maybe the hits on the latter are bigger household names than the hits on this one but this album is a bit more seamless, flowing from one song to the next. Bloody Well Right might still be my favorite Supertramp tune and Dreamer is also high up there. School is a great opener and the title track is a great closer. Hide in Your Shell is underrated - powerful, emotional lyrics and so many lovely twists and turns in the nearly 7 minutes of runtime. Still a great album all these years later.

so funky and fun and ridiculous, I had an absolute blast!!!

I’ve listened to this album so many times in my life. 5-stars. Next.

This is my third favorite supertramp album but still amazing. Love all the tracks except the last two don’t do much for me. Rating: 4.7

I love how school has that dark edge sound to it that I have come to love.. My uncle had this album and my cousin and I would listen to it over and over when I would go out to see them. Brings back great memories, but there's also a lot of good work on this album.

Very nice album.

cowboy bebop vibes, positive feelings

Omg how have I never heard of them!! Phenomenal!!

Did not realize how many absolute bangers were on this album. Great from start to finish

Grandios! Volle Punktzahl!

Like that :)

Masterpiece, was born in the wrong generation, 5/5

Supertramp ... immer für einen Ohrwurm gut!

I had no idea Supertramp had music like this. It’s so artistic and complicated. It’s been a journey of a listen. I love it. I kinda feel like the hands on the cover today. I am working from home, sitting by my window and watching all the people walking around outside, while the blinds look like cell bars. Sorry to make things depressing. Anyhow a fun unique complex album.

Magique un 7/5

I was torn between 4 and 5 stars because I really liked the beginning of the album but got a bit bored in the middle. The last, titular, track settled it.

Superb album. Many great hits. Classic rock at it's best!!!

A classic, timeless and fun

I adored this. Just so much fun to listen to. One of those rare albums where I can honestly say I loved every song.

One of the best albums ever!!! Absolut fantastic music, great songs.
