Reviews (page 3 of 13)
The album opens with the track "School." It starts with a harmonica intro to open up the album and set the tone. This track shows off the album's proggy side. It includes standout vocals, interesting lyrics, and great instrumentals to give it a fantastic start. "Bloody Well Right" is a standout track that opens with a dynamic piano riff and gives an introduction to a perfect lead guitar wah tone. The inclusion of brass and the unique sound of the Wurlitzer piano in the beginning tracks created something interesting to listen to. There's a heavy focus on percussion, bass, brass, and keys, as well as the inclusion of distinct vocals and engaging lyrics. The percussion and bass really complete the tracks and give the album a damn good rhythm. The sixth track, "Rudy," is one of the longer tracks on the album and, in my opinion, the greatest on the album. I feel that there are no words to describe this track, as it is one hell of a complete experience for someone giving the album a full listen. The end of the album gave a really great conclusion to the album, with "If Everyone Was Listening" and "Crime of the Century." "If Everyone Was Listening" was a great orchestral track that led into the next masterpiece to gradually end the album, which focused heavily on the instruments to close it off. This album definitely had significant direction. It is overall a great blend of prog, art, and pop rock. Their use of saxophones, keyboards, strings, and harmonicas adds flavor to the album due to the quality of the production. I feel as if every song on the album is notable, and the length of the entire album is perfect the way it is. Easily a 5/5 as a complete album for me.
Banger
I love this album. Bloody Well Right is enough to earn it five stars in and off itself. Add to that Asylum and Hide in Your Shell and it’s brilliant. Yeah I saw the comment saying this is “prog for people who think billy joel “rocks”” but hey! Guess what! You can think this is a great rock album while also loving hard rock albums! And I do! And so should you!
Crime of the century is PEAK rock along with breakfast in america
Absolute classic!
I liked it a lot! Although what was that random scream in the first song. - 9/10
Love! 9/10
Completely my jam
Love this album, made me emotional sometimes, remembering all sorts of good and bad experienced I had in my life. Or sin along like Dreamer. Favorite songs: Asylum, If Everyone was listening and title track. Worst song: None!
Awesome album
Einfach gut.
Was für ein Album! Grossartig!
now this is an album i can get behind. i absolutely adore supertramp, between them and electric light orchestra they have SUCH a full and almost healing nature to their songs; every track literally makes you feel like you're cloud hopping and skydiving gracefully back down to earth. breakfast in america is probably the more iconic album, but that's not to say this earlier venture isn't downright incredible.
Have been a Supertramp fan for many years. I really enjoyed listening to the entire album. Vocals are outstanding.
One of the best albums Suptertramp released.
4.5/5 Best Track: Crime of the Century
EPIC - journey into the past. 5 stars. Listened to it 3 times.
almost as good as a bad radiohead album
I discovered this album just in the last few years when looking for hi-res albums to listen to on my new headphones. Since then, I've fallen in love with it. To me, it is a nearly perfect prog rock album. It is highly listenable, catchy, but it has a lot of depth and beautiful playing.
Wonderful album! Supertramp is so great and somehow underrated.
Truly love this album, which makes my mom very happy. Favorite track: Bloody Well Right
Really liked this album. Amazing piano and all-round great music. Not the biggest fan of the vocals, but the rest of the music more than makes up for it. The songs go in directions you weren’t thinking they would go in, and you could head-bop to them.
First time legitimately listening through this one... it's pretty damn good! Probably one of my favorite prog rock albums. The drums sound great... the dynamics are off the charts, really like the themes and the instrumentation. Speaking of, it's pretty close to DSoTM in themes and it's not too far off from a performance perspective. I'm going with a 4.5
Pracht album ❤️❤️❤️
Fave: School
Geweldig album!
This is my first intro to Supertramp. It's old school progressive rock, but very listenable and not too pretentious. This album makes great use of slowly building up the tempo and using crescendo. Lots of nice piano in the more ballady pieces. Also some interesting horn arrangements too. The vocals are very 1970s, but that is to be forgiven. Overall, I'm impressed with this album. Most songs sound similar but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I love Supertramp it reminds me of my childhood, my parents used to play it when they were hosting parties.
An absolute masterpiece. Rudy is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard. School is awesome. Crime of the Century (the last track) is cool AF. Definitely going to be a major influence on my own music.
This is another band that I have no prayer at evaluating objectively. But these arrangements are beautiful, and I was really happy to have this album live up to my biased expectations. Favorite track: Bloody Well Right
Mijn favo album allertijden, simpelweg subliem.
Yes, didn't listen as many times over as 'breakdast in america'
Holy moly....
Crime of the century is a milestone in Supertramp's career. This is how the group became mainstream imo. Heard it so many times on the car with my mother :) "Dreamer" is such a classic
Great album. Nice departure from always hearing only "The Autobriography Of"
One of my all time favorite albums. This is a banger from start to finish, not a bad song on it.
An all time favorite of mine. I’m an absolute sucker for this period of the Supertramp discography. It’s classic 70’s prog but while several of their contemporaries were battling in the difficulty game, Supertramp brought amazing melodies and a level of emotion to the field that was almost unheard of.
I've listened to this album several times. This may be my favorite supertramp album, but Crisis What Crisis? I still rate slightly higher than this one. My favorite tracks off of this album are School, Rudy, If Everyone was Listening, and Hide in Your Shell. 9/10
Wspaniały. Od pierwszych momentów zaskakuje i wprowadza w swój niezwykły świat. GIT.PL
Amazing! Dreamer is my fave track.
Great album, definitely a classic. Love the psychedelic rock sound. The piano that starts 2 mins into the last song sound absolutely amazing.
very good
Supertramp! Enough said!
This was a great album. Lots of cool soundscapes when the album isn't a jam. But when it is a jam, it's a fun jam. And the lyricism is really cool too.
Idk how they're packing so many things into each song. Kind of fucking crazy.
I remember seeing them perform "Dreamer" on The Old Grey Whistle Test and I bought the album the next day. Still one of my favourite albums of all time.
harmonikka ukko alku 5/5 wibes, hello sir how are you *plays harmonikka*.. wtf vitun hyvä albumi jaa 70-luku noh ei yllätä sitten Pink Floyd influences doing the heavy lifting, häh? mikä influenssa? ei vittu lähelläkään mitään pink bandia slightly unconventional outside pop sound = which one is school
Loved it
School // Bloody Well Right // Hide In Your Shell // Asylum // Dreamer // If Everyone Was Listening // Crime of the Century 5/5
Bloody well right
At its best this album is great. And at it's worst, it's pretty damn good. I really enjoyed listening to this, maybe even more than Breakfast in America. I'm between a 4 and a 5, I am leaning toward 4 but I did that with ,'So' and I regret not giving it a 5. I think this album will get better over time too. I will revisit this album
I can’t believe I’d never listened to Supertramp before this…totally up my alley as a lover of British rock. Loved it!
So nice I listened twice! Better than Breakfast in America.
Fantastic album. It's so complete and special. I love all of the songs but today I especially was drawn to Hide in Your Shell. So good!
Just fantastic, I love this one
Great super team album, I prefer breakfast in America but this one is fun too
Excelente
Absolutely love this album. Supertramp never disappoints.
Awesome album by Supertramp! Great musicians and a perfect recording. With "Bloody Well Right" as a personal favorite, I can't get enough of this.
I think this is brilliant
I'll never get bored of Supertramp.
Very powerful album, starts strong and.continues strong. Supertramp are like a hidden gem for me, underrated and unknown generally these days. 5/5
It's a strong 5 for me! I love the mix of genres. It has the grandeur and instrumental variety of a British pop album (eg. Elton John or The Beatles), but also very funky. I haven't really gotten into most of the tracks yet, but it's been very pleasant background hearing. Bloody Well Right is my favorite track!
Got me started on prog rock during the pandemic. Rick and Morty-esque decades before Rick and Morty was a thing. Damn near perfect.
If I could give 6 stars this album would deserve it. It’s a god damn masterpiece. Song writing and emotive performances at their finest
Such a great album! Two in a row that I have on vinyl. This one is just perfect from start to finish. All great songs, no filler.
One of my favourite 70s records! Supertramp was so so good, can’t honestly say a bad thing about them. It’s got two great singles. But truthfully, those as far from the best, as this is a very strong album and doesn’t fall flat! 9,5 out of 10
A lot of snobbery around Supertramp - simply great tunes and always deliver. That opening with the Piano from school to bloody well right is simply superb. They're definetly an album band rather than a singles band which is why the spotify generation doesn't get on with them.
9/10
fantastic. 5 stars.
Excellent! Very good
Really sneaky newcomer to my pantheon of favorites! I thought it was pretty good on first listen, but then I've kept coming back to it
Really good album. Love Supertramp, love electric pianos, what more can you say. Baffles me how they are not more highly regarded. The album might not contain the songs their most famous for, but it's definitely one of their best still. Some songs stand out more than other, but it's one of the rare albums where I actually think every song is good. No song sound like the other either.
Man i liked this album. The opening harmonica was a good intro to what to come. I enjoyed the more progressive rock songs and the piano riffs. The closing track "Crime of the Centruary" especially has a nice progression. I thought when starting to listen i only knew "Dreamer" but I'm pretty sure I've heard "School" and "Bloody well right" as well. The album is a perfect blend of progressive rock, pianos, saxophones and pop. I think i will have to give this one a 5 which I think is the first 5 I've given to an album I haven't heard before. Time will see if my opinion stays when I get more familiar with all the songs.
One of the live music highlights of my youth was when Supertramp played to a packed house at the Sudbury Arena to promote this album! They started with “School” and ended with “Crime of the Century”. As a side note, Santana played around the same time – other than that, we saw a lot of April Wine and The Stampeders. “School” was my favourite back in the day, with the intro, the piano solo and the proggy changes of pace. “Bloody Well Right” and “Dreamer” were made for radio, but still decent. Listening to most of this for the first time in ??? long, I’m blown away by the rest of the album, especially the arrangements, the way the songs build, the use of strings at just the right moment, the sax solos that start just a few seconds before the song fades out, the depth of the lyrics and of course the two lead vocalists. A great album! A unique sound then and now.
I recently posted about how Talking Heads had an incredible streak of four consecutive brilliant albums and I think Supertramp can be included in that conversation also, with Crime of the Century kicking it off, then followed by Crisis, what crisis?, Even in the quietest moments and then Breakfast in America. All four albums have several truly memorable tracks, but for some reason it seems that only this album made the cut for this list, truly the crime of the century, boomtish! Wiki labels them a prog band but I think they are probably the least proggy of the big British bands, being much more accessible to mainstream audiences than say early Yes or Genesis. So to account for the sinful omission of their other albums that feature truly great songs such as: Take the long way home, Breakfast in America, Even in the quietest moments, Fool's overture and Babaji, this one gets a slight bump up to 5 stars.
This is superb from beginning to end. Supertramp are a hard group to pigeonhole, somewhere between progressive and West Coast FM. Every song on this album is memorable, and the musicianship is first rate.
Heavy Pink Floyd vibes on the first track School which melts into a funky jazzy breakdown of interludes. Great start to an album. Then Bloody Well Right throws you right into the fun and quirky Supertramp that you’re used to. It’s wild how melodic this band can be while also still throwing the theatrical instrumentals of a Steely Dan, or the magic of a Styx rock anthem. Broad generalizations, but I can really understand how much of an inspiration these guys must have been to others exploring their sound. There are multiple Jams then the album mellows out for the middle section, which I don’t mind. Problem is that it ends with a proper saxy showdown, and that is enough for me to ask myself why have I never listened to this album before? Beauty.
Fantastic album, enjoyed from start to finish
Solid album throughout with some amazing highs. Very interesting sounds are used very well, and the many layers in the tracks adds a lot. A great example of quality prog
Front to back this blew me away, very proggy mixes of King Crimson Rush Beatles etc, I'm on my fourth listen in the past 24 hours already
So many good songs
10/10 proggy as fuck in the best way possible
Great album, sound and ambient like psicodelic near to Pink Floyd or The Doors albums. Love it!
Masterpiece
Loved this. So much range. So much piano.
I was familiar with Supertramp, but less familiar with their early prog rock. 'Breakfast in America' is obviously their most well known album, but this is a super solid, enjoyable prog rock album. The songs blend together nicely and the lead singer's voice is unique and brings an interesting sound to the album. Nothing too over the top to turn me off like with some prog rock, I can see myself coming back to this again and again.
nice British musicc
Didn’t think I would but I really liked it
10/10
This album is simply incredible! All songs are a vibe and everything is so polished. Solos of Harmonica and Synth mix perfectly with guitars and voice and creates a master piece
Artful, prog pop. With playful melodies, unique instrumentation, duel lead singers and interesting lyrics.
I really didn’t expect this but I really resonated with some of the lyrics in quite a strange way and the songs themselves were great especially: Opener school which starts off as very slow but then expands into full on funk. Hide in your shell probably made me think the most about a certain time in my life so that one came across as quite beautiful. Asylum again has amazing lyrics and it ends on this theatrical close which is perfect to end side one. If everyone was listening has the best chorus with thundering drums juxtaposed with a pretty piano. Crime of the century is a great album closer ending on this amazing instrumental so theatrical. I loved this so much 5/5.
Loved as expected
Man, supertramp is really good, a fact I often forget
Heerlijk album!
pretty perfect album for me
Absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word.
This is a great album and reminds me of my teenage years listening at Grant’s whacked off our heads. RIP mate
Bloody well right så bloody weell tight.
Great album.
Iconic opening. Reminds me of being 21 and filing data.
One of the best albums ever
😍😍
Amazing
Great album with unique sound
Love this album! I only ever recalled Supertramp from 'jokey' songs but there's some seriously good gems on this. (Bloody Well Right)
Magic, pure magic. I'm still in disbelief - how has such a work of art gone under my radar for so long? Compositions developed to the point I kept forgetting it's not a symphonic orchestra. Crime Of The Century earned it's place in my heart. One of the best findings of 1001. Highlight: Rudy
Ohuenno! Good shit!
awesome
Absolutely great!
miam on mange trop bien
J'adore
I remember this album was still massively popular throughout the 80s and of course for good reasons: classic album from the 70s when Supertramp released a whole string of these perfect popalbums.
Fodasso. Mil vezes melhor que uma coletânea.
Great album, really strong start with the first 3 tracks, Rudy good in the middle and then Crime of the Century brings it to a great close.
Supertramp!
This is one that really needs to be experienced with headphones. The dynamic range is wide and listening on speakers I was either straining to hear or clamoring to turn it down. With the headphones, I got more of the subtle sounds and some nice stereo effects. Before this, I was really only familiar with Supertramp's singles and mostly those that featured Roger Hodgson singing lead. That made it hard to fit songs like longtime favorite Bloody Well Right into the Supertramp space in my brain. Listening to this album helped with that, giving me a wider perspective of their work. I enjoyed this record a lot. Most of the songs exceed five and a half minutes and don't stay in one place --- songs I didn't entirely love had parts that I did. Some of the pieces and their theatricality brought to mind Queen and Elton John of the same era. (In fact, parts of Asylum sound so much like Tiny Dancer, that it must be an homage.) I've never really liked the song Dreamer before but I loved it today. Today I recognized a little countermelody near the end and it took a minute to place --- Rodger Hodgson included it as part of the soundscape introduction to his 1984 solo single Had a Dream, another of my favorites. And that glockenspiel at the end! Yes! Glad to have listened to this for the songs I knew and the songs that were new to me. Lots to dig into here and it definitely makes me want to hear more from Supertramp.
Utterly brilliant album! I grew up listening to this as from an early age I had access to my older sister's record collection. Then she and the album moved out of the house in the early 80s and for whatever reason CRIME OF THE CENTURY and I failed to ever reunite again. Hearing "School" again instantly took me back and I realized how much I LOVE this album! I'd spent lots of time over the years with Supertramp's BREAKFAST IN AMERICA album or their greatest hits collections, but for whatever reason forgot about this album. The big hits ("Bloody Well Right", "Dreamer", "Crime of the Century") I heard frequently since the 80s, but the other tracks had disappeared from memory. Oh CRIME OF THE CENTURY will you ever forgive me for neglecting you?! What an incredible album this is! And how much have I missed the deep cuts of this album! As soon as I heard them it was like being reunited with a long-lost friend. I am kicking myself for all the lost years! So so so so good as an album! The hits are 100 times better in context. Today I fell back into an even deeper love with this incredible album. Thank you for reuniting me with this amazing record!
SUPER TRAMPO!
One of the best albums I have listened to in the experiment. Great dynamics and flow within a great run time. The melodies are balanced so well with the effective instrumentation. A perfect prog album.
What a great pro album. More towards pop than rock and lacking a bit guitar but that gets made up by that great sounding keyboard being prominent
Amazing
Viejardo y buenardo
Production is immaculate, sounds terrific! It really integrates typical prog structure into a pop-ish (in sense of a more accessible format) song, and the result is definitely interesting.
One of my first "Favorite Albums". I've loved this thing since I was 11 years old. It was one of my first Amazon purchases, back when they just had books and cds. On a personal level, I feel like it still holds up. It's hard to choose between Bloody Well Right and Dreamer as my favorite. I think I could listen to the musical intro for Bloody Well Right on repeat forever until I die. Every other track is a classic in my eyes (ears?)
Well, this goes without saying this is definitely one of the best albums of all time. It is varied and intersting music, and reminds me of my childhood so much. My dad loves Supertramp and it was always on in the car
This really is one of the greatest albums ever written. I just can't get enough of it. Every song is perfectly crafted. Asylum is such a great song, the build up and progression of madness is sublime. Bloody Well Right is a banger to bang all the bangers. The rest are just plain excellent.
Solid
4.5/5 Really nice album Some good songs
Never listened to Supertramp before and loved this
New one! Starts off with a western harmonica, cool! Very rocky, yet very chill. Might add it to my Library. Added it to my library. Full of good prog-rock with some rarely heard instruments, at least in rock :D
Really enjoyed this one. Lots of cool instruments and sounds. Will definitely listen again. Hard to pick a favourite track, this feels like an album you should listen to all the way through in order. For now I'll pick Bloody Well Right.
Great album top to bottom. School, bloody well right, Asylum and so on. Great instrumentals on piano, harmonica, guitar etc accompanied by big vocals ands sharp lyrics. Will definitely revisit this for some new favorite ST songs.
One of my first vinyls and my intro to prog rock. Love it to bits
Brilliant. Loved from the first time I heard.
This album is amazing! My most favorite track is Rudy (it's so 70s) and I hella love the temp changes. I also really like If Everyone Was Listening and Dreamer. Sick sounds, would listen again.
Really, really good. Loved it.
Pretty good - 5/5 bowls of bolognaise
I love it
I knew a lot more of these songs that I thought I would. This is one of those bands that I've heard the name a lot but would never be able to name a song by them. Favorite so far (I know we have a long way to go).
Un des meilleurs albums au monde, évidemment!
Epic, some Pink Floyd in there but i think it’s just the theme and the vocals
I’ve always listened to their singles, but this album is singlehandedly the best i’ve heard supertramp ever. amazing.
Supertramp just stands out as having their own sound during a time when so much music sounded the same. This album is fantastic.
Really promising album need to listen more but really liked it first listen through
Great listen, great prog rock
This one will go on the regular rotation
Always a great day for some Tramp
Inspired album and their peak. Eta d's up well after all the years.
Listening session: july 4th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard one song before Thoughts: yes some songs are cheesy but Supertramp always puts me in a good mood and I don’t really understand the criticism that this album is boring Favourite tracks: School, Hide In Your Shell & Dreamer
Not exactly my style but very creative and engaging
Really fun. I was close to giving it a 5, but on a second listen I decided 4 was more appropriate. Still really, really good though.
Fun vibes
Had fun, some enjoyable songs. Overall a strange listen though
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - A stylish, arty take on prog rock that I like. It has a certain shiny quality that makes it stand out amongst my favourite records of the era. This is my personal favourite Supertramp album.
For "School", "Bloody Well Right", "Rudy", and the title track keeps this at a solid 4½★s for me. The only real low part of the album is the cheezy pop hit single "Dreamer" but even that has a certain amount of mid 70s charm. (better than Roger's next biggest cheeze pop single "It's Raining Again" in '82) I still prefer *Breakfast in America* by a good bit, but this is an overlooked classic. (9.6) ★★★★½
Great progressive pop. 4.5 stars
Classic
I really liked it, never really explored Supertramp’s discography but I’m glad I gave it a listen
sunday vibes the backing vocals make this album surprisingly silly-- a good cheesy listen
The highs are very high. but a couple songs don't have that spark
4 stars
Supertramp was a quirky band with some very interesting vocals. I enjoyed this one.
This album has a huge nostalgia bias for me as it was one of the albums in my dad's collection that I was drawn to when I was growing up. I've listened to it countless times and the harmonica right at the start is still one of my all time favourite sounds ever. It has been a long while since I gave this a proper listen, so it was quite nice to have this album generated today. Listening with a bit more intention and I realized Supertramp have a bit of a prog rock, yacht rock, and 70s pop influence. It almost sounds like if Billy Joel or Elton John had hired members of Pink Floyd and Steely Dan to be their backing band.
Classic. Title track does not get enough love. Love the intros and the use of strings.
I saw this album cover and thought "don't know any of these songs" but I did! I remember my dad singing "bloody well right" around the house as a kid. it was really wonderful to hear it again. I definitely had an Mp3 of "School" back in the limewire days. The way that beat comes in at 1:44 is seared in my brain. it's so good. Also, Supertramp loves harmonica.
this was very good! my best friend has been trying to get me into supertramp for a while and i think this may have done it. some great piano stuff, awesome guitars, yeah i really liked this
Had this one on vinyl at 4Ex. And it’s albums like this that got listeners into complete albums. We played it from start to finish with the flip after Asylum. All songs better than good, holds up well, and great piano. (4.49*s) Thanks to SAM or this Crime might never have been committed. (And how do you find a millionaire to support you for three or four years?
Their only good album. Last track is great.
This album was HUUUUGE in Montreal when I was very young. Stands up.
Ahh, the 70s, when a middle 8 became a middle 50 or so. On this Supertramp album, it's not always a bad thing. The middle section of School is brilliant, and the outro of the title track sweeps beautifully around a simple piano phrase. Dreamer is such a brilliantly simple song, with the Hammond organ blending in with the electric piano to great effect. However, it doesn't always work. Asylum and Rudy don't hold the attention as well as Hide In Your Shell does. If Everyone Was Listening is a really nice penultimate track though, and I guess there are slightly more pros than cons. So a low 4☆ and I may have been more generous if a couple of minutes had been knocked off a couple of the tracks.
4/5
I really vibed with the music i felt like it had a lot of different stages of emotions it was nice!!
Luv me brekkie. Luv me some Supertramp. Not actually properly listened to this one before and quite enjoyed it! It's not gonna become my favourite but I am gonna listen to it quite a bit more! The title track is better than I expected so I'm surprised it's not one I've heard people mention with this album! Highlight: School (This one I knew beforehand and have listened to a bunch) Lowlight: Dreamer (This one I knew beforehand and have avoided listening to it because I think it's the worst track on the album and a surpringly well rated song)
Lindo lindo. Sobre todo al final. Nota: 3.9
los temas iniciales fueron brutales, 10/10 fumao
A little bit tired of School, but in the context of this album it was nice to hear it again. Not really got into Supertramp, but this is a record I would play more often.
When I saw a Supertramp album, I figured it would be the one I 'knew'. This one was pretty good though - shame it, by itself, didn't lead to better success in the US. But they got there eventually!
Solid prog pop record, full of hits really
Great album, one of the best by Supertramp.
A heavy 4 star
This album was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I only knew supertramp by name but not much of their music. Prog rock is tricky and this was a great version of it. 8/10 Top song Dreamer
Surprisingly enjoyable! I didn't expect much out of Supertramp, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was neither straightforward disco (which I was expecting) nor bland early '70s rock. It was a fun combo of the two. I will definitely be going back to this one.
8.0/10 This is a rock classic for me... love the keyboards.
“i wanna feel you oh, i wanna touch you please, let me near you, let me near you…”
For me, this album has aged extremely well. A band that can be both interesting, technical and groovy all at the same time. Something that really stands out for me on these songs are the dynamics. Songs that go from lone keyboard to full band and back again. Almost gives it that rock opera feel but staying more in it's lane. When the band comes in on School, I get chills. Best played loud. Great album.
5: 4: Crime of the Century, Arrival 3: Darkness on the Edge of Town, Court and Spark 2: Ramones 1:
Day 275 Would have been a 3 until the last song which is absolutely brilliant. Highlights Bloody Well Right Crime of the Century
I think the only album I've heard from them is Even in the Quietest Moments which my father owned. I like that one. I like this one more. 3.5 rounded up
Slept on Supertramp for too long! Scratching a Steely Dan-esque itch with the instrumentation. Big fan of this - will continue to come back.
I know I have heard of this band. Oh yes, they have that one song that is super popular, almost reminds me of an REO Speedwagon track.
My personal best discovery on this list so far 8/10 Will I add this album to my library? yes
While the sound hasn't aged super well (it sounds very much of its time), I still enjoyed this quite a bit.
Dramatic showtimes but classic rock
One of the seminal albums of Prog
3,5
Good classic rock album from a band that I have enjoyed over the years. The one thing I find interesting from this Supertramp album is their flare the theatrical and whimsical sound. At times I envision I watching a play or at circus.
I have been a Jeff Buckley fan for much of my life, I will always love and appreciate Grace and the beautiful songs that came with it.
Really good
Would listen again for sure
7.5/10
So proggy, Elton-Johnny, concept-album-y. What's happening here? The lyrics seem to recede into the background of early '70s whateverness: angst and wistfulness I guess. I think I like this? It seem to be causing me a lot of anxiety though. Piano as percussion. Closing time swaying rhythm. The sax at the end of Crime of the Century really penetrates. Pink Floyd, pay attention. I lost everything the moment the album ended, but I could grasp it if I played it again.
"if I can help you, just let me know" ;_; love how big "asylum" feels "crime of the century" rocks. this album's great
Great album. Added to the library
Kult!
This passed me buy back in the day. I really enjoyed the music. I’m not much for depressive lyrics.
I still don't know what to think of progressive rock in general, as some albums I've listened to were straight up weird. But this one wasn't. Rounding up to 4/5 for the great mood.
Really good actually, the only supertramp I've heard but almost every song here is a highlight
it was good, great listen, not prefect tho
unreal. weak in the middle
Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 4.6 (A+) Track Thoughts: An album of excess, mixed and produced to perfection, but to what end? I think I thought this was a funk band, never having heard them before (that I am aware of), so this was a pleasant surprise. There is something to be said about that juxtaposition of expectation to reality, the discovery of something novel, that elevates the initial experience. That said I think this belongs up there beside every other thing it reminds me of! "School" A- Is this a 5 minute song with a meandering (if enjoyable in its own spaced out harmonica vibe) intro that takes way too long to actually kick into musical gear, or is it a tight 3 minute honkeytonk piano rock piece that also reminds me of good parts of Jethro Tull? I am not sure. I think its nothing at all like what I expected from my completely unfounded idea of what "Supertramp" would sound like. I really hope the rest of the album maintains the momentum this set. "Bloody Well Right" A+ PERFECTLY NAMED! Tickle them keys! Groovy and Funky and just enough of that edge to the guitar drop. Is it kinda a Pink Floyd/Queen also ran? Yeah... but like... I love the sound! Its a little lyrically vapid, and idk if that sax solo is to be celebrated or stuck behind a sitcom intro... For my tastes I loved it though! "Hide in Your Shell" B- I think this is a bit too slow, but I also havent quite heard anything like this exact sound before, so I am happy to have been exposed to it. Its such a cleanly mixed upbeat ballad that I cant really fault it beyond its length... I guess it is again, reminiscent of ELO, but I am not well versed in their catalogue either outside of the hits, so this feels fresh To Me Right Now... 50 years removed. It didn't need to be over 6 minutes long, despite its dynamic range, it feels stretched too thin for its own good. "Asylum" C+ I dont know if I am up for a long piano ballad AFTER the previous song. There is some aspect to the bass that in places feels like its breaking up and has an almost deep brass vibe to it. But Yeah, ultimately this feels like a Queen / Bowie / Elton John also-ran (derogatory). At least its not Billy Joel? It doesnt earn the bombast it insists on reaching for. "Dreamer" B+ Why does his voice sound like that OOOOH it so that when you bring in the panned echoy chorus it actually sounds amazing by contrast. I am also wondering if there is something about the childish nature of the criticism being levied against the titular "Dreamer"... There is something Rush-like to the song now that I think of it. I think there is an A tier song in here if the swell actually coalesced into something more then the sum of its parts. "Rudy" B OH we are in for a trip on this one huh! Heavier Steely Dan (complimentary).. so like... Copper? Silver Dan? Really enjoy the violins over the chigga-chigga-wugga-chigga guitar bit. The false end of the sound of the streets got me. This is maybe a bit too indulgent for my taste, but its a hell of a mood piece. "If Everyone Was Listening" S- This is where the extravagance of the orchestral arrangement actually does add up to something magnificent. My only complaint is that its a bit of a downer song, but its got such a smooth chorus with that reed instrument (I dare not say oboe) cutting right through the mix... I think there are better examples of what this song is DOING and what I would listen to when I am in its particular mood, but I cant think of any of them right now, so I am glad to have this! "Crime of the Century" A+ Yeah I am getting Jethro Tull, but also a bit of Tally-Hall? This is good company to keep! One of these days I should watch Buckaroo Banzai, I think. That staccato piano chords and drums part in the middle is JUST ripped off whole cloth by The Protomen.
Overall I preferred Breakfast in America but this is a good one too.
this one is good! reminded me of ELO a bit
Pretty snazzy :3
Okay wow this album rocks. A little bit of a tired in the nose kind of protest song but it just sounds really good. The instrumentals all over School were so groovy and really broke up the rock sounds perfect
Pretty cool album. Especially the song Crime of the Century at the very end.
This was cool! Little bit of jazz, little bit of blues, little bit of r&b, little bit of British folks just having a good time. I liked the variety, I liked how they made a big deal out of every song. It felt like glam rock that veered Steely Dan instead of David Bowie. But was definitely aware of both worlds.
Classic Supertramp with some of their hits!
Really enjoyed this. This band is so “unique” as my dad would say. Really excited for breakfast in America. Would give 4.5
No surprises here, this is just a really good 70s prog rock Supertramp album
3.8
Weird and fun! A few bops. Extremely 70s sounding.
It took me a few listens to appreciate this one.
4,5
Best Track - "Bloody Well Right"
STRAIGHT W ALBUM. Did not expect this from the same people who made "it's raining again". The journey of the album is insane, the ending song is fitting. Thoroughly enjoyed this album.
A lot of the album gave me the feeling that they leaning forward/driving just ahead of the beat. I'd not heard it before but thoroughly enjoyed it. High 3 low 4
tough, flowed well! I enjoyed it, definitely could see this becoming a 5 star for me
7/10
Really a 3.5 but just tips into a 4
This felt just like a cast recording for a musical - I loved it! Favourite track: Crime of the Century
# Album Name: Crime Of The Century # Artist: SuperTramp # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Good solid enjoyable album. # Top Tunes: school / bloody well right / Dreamer / Crime of the century # Would I listen to it again? Yes
really short and sweet album 4/5 oh it's got a psychedelic vibe no wonder it sounds great
Interesting mix of songs perfect for a drive
Very much enjoyed. Some songs I know as well.
I’m a bit biased because Progressive Rock is my all time favorite genre, so I was very close of ranking this a 5 during the entirety of my first listen through of the album. I spent literally all day trying to decide what my favorite song was, and whether or not my bias was affecting my judgment a bit. I ultimately decided that it was, and even though this is still a really really good album, I’m going to give it a 4 instead of a 5. The first 2 songs are incredible, but the next several minutes up until “Rudy” are just okay. My favorites on this album are “School”, “Bloody Well Right”, “Rudy” and “Crime Of The Century”. “Rudy” has a little riff towards the middle of the song that sealed it as my favorite. The 2 opening songs have the best vocal performances and almost got picked as my favorite, and “Crime Of The Century” is borderline Jazz at times mixed with Prog, which is a very good way to end off the album. I could listen to any of these songs all day, and even the other ones I wouldn’t end up skipping, another point in favor of the album. 4/8 songs kind of blew me away, but the other 4 are just ok. Ultimately, that’s half of the album that gets a 5 from me. That might be enough to warrant a 5 in general… Been that kind of a week so far. I don’t know. Damn, I’m still conflicted on this after spending an entire day with Crime Of The Century. I’ve never even actually heard of this band or any of these songs before, so to call this a surprise would be a hell of an understatement. I am an absolute sucker when it comes to Prog music, and this is pure art, so to waver at what the ranking should be, and even consider ranking this anything other than a 5 ultimately makes me think it deserves to be a 4. I’ve got to draw a line somewhere and not just blanket make them all a 5. So, as tough as it is for me to admit, this is not a perfect album. But it’s close. So I’m going to give it a 4.85/5. For now at least. We’ll see if I’m satisfied with that, or if I decided to come back and give this a 5 later. Add this to the list of god knows how many I’ve mentioned adjusting to a 5. Fantastic album!!
Nothing better than good driving rhythm sections with lively piano, and its all over this album!
Ive never really checked out Supertramp, they never seemed all that interesting to me, and I admittedly wasn't that excited about listening to this, but Crime Of The Century was a lot better than I expected. This feels like it has a combination of well-written pop, funk, glam, and a tasteful smattering of prog that feels like it almost gels into disco sometimes. Yet it's also grounded in good rock fundamentals and willing to play in uncharted territory like the best of prog. The lengthy songs are dynamic and well paced, the arrangements are enjoyable, and the full package still has some immediacy. School is one of the songs where the disparate parts of this album feel like they are most well balanced. Asylum and Rudy are dense rock epics. Bloody Well Right and Hide In Your Shell hit like great pop songs. Dreamer and If Everyone Was Listening are some very welcome tender moments. And Crime Of The Century is an austere, epic end of the project. I will say that matter of taste does keep me from going 5 here. And I will also say that I dont think these songs are all equally interesting. But think they are all well presented. And I think the best ones are *real* stand outs. Rudy, School, Asylum and Crime Of The Century are particularly compelling. This was a pleasant surprise, and a surprisingly great album.
Quite retro, nice piano and vocals like Elton.
Been a fan of Supertramp since Breakfast in America but hadn’t listened to this in its entirety. Liked it a lot.
I rly liked it lots
*Supertramp has such a unique and cool sound, but I like Breakfast in America a little more
solid. this whole thing is kinda interesting but occasionally falls back to fairly conventional 70s rock in a way that makes this album feel closer to background music more than something to really jam out to, so it feels held back. i think it mostly works though, or at least perhaps i'm partial to the art rock leanings with its particular instrumentation, although there's clear misses like "bloody well right" which were just obnoxious. maybe the real prog element is on a meta level how the album progressive got better because the title track is a really strong closer.
I'm surprised to see this on here but no Breakfast in America. I'd say that's definitely the highlight of Supertramps career, more consistent and with the bigger songs. This is like prog rock watered down to the point that it can be hardly called "progressive" at all, but it still does come out mostly good in my opinion. I feel the singing is going to be very hit or miss, but for me it definitely hit. The album goes through just enough different styles and sounds to keep things interesting with the highlight having to be the outro of the final song. Overall it's pretty good, just enough to be a 4 for me but a very weak 4 at that.
maybe im getting soft but i really enjoyed this. lead singers voice wasnt awesome but everything else was. all the songs kept me on my toes
School tiene que ser top 10 intros oat
Didn't realize I liked Supertramp. But I suppose I do!
My rating is 3.5, so I will round it up to 4...I'd never heard of Supertramp until this album, but I'm glad I was given this one to listen to as my first piece of work by them. The instrumentals are classic of that 70s rock feel, but at the same time, they feel so out there. The addition of sax in some of the pieces creates a sort of stand-out cinematic feel in places throughout the album. The piano throughout is never dull, most of the time setting the feel for the song, be that slightly jazzy or cinematic. The vocals feel very elegant and almost theatrical. There are some stand-out songs in here for me, but with that also comes some tracks that I feel were in the sort of background and didn't do an awful lot for me. I am a firm believer that an album should finish how it started. If your first track is dance/jazz/heavy, etc., then so should your final track. I like how this album takes that one step further, however. 'School' (Opening track) starts with a solo harmonica melody leading into the song. The harmonica is then rarely heard throughout the rest of the album... until the last 10 seconds or so of the final track. This gives a nice call-back feel to the start of the album. I just personally found that really interesting. Stand-outs: Asylum Dreamer Rudy If Everyone Was Listening Crime Of The Century (specifically the long jazz-influenced instrumental)
A 4.
I love the piano on this album. As other reviewers have said this album is a bridge between prog and rock. I knew Bloody Well Right and Dreamer. I enjoyed the rest of the album
Remember this one well from highschool
Crime of the Century could quite easily be criticized for its derivativeness, its pop sheen diluting the more "serious" art-rock pretensions of their contemporaries. But at the same time it is an excellent album in both songwriting and execution, and listening to it to the backdrop of the popular music of that has been made since makes one wonder, what criticism would really be left it this were to be treated that harshly? I'll tell you, not fucking much.
Hit repeat immediately after finishing it
4.25
I really liked this, I am aware of Supertramp but I am not aware of ever listening to them with the exception of Blinded By The Light. Lots of good books, tight groves and poppy ear worms considering their prog AOR labelling. Happily put this on in the car again and do another end to end listen. 3.7
I like this a lot. Interesting songs without being overly self indulgent. One of those bands that I always meant to check out more and this has definitely got me on board.
Interesting album. Liked the title track
8/10
Love it. What a great 70s album.
No había escuchado nada, muy bueno
Really enjoyed this one, felt slightly prog rock without being too overblown, will listen again
Some very nice poppy 70s prog rock, with killer keyboard work all throughout! The piano solo in School was a particular highlight.
Amazing
Very listenable.
Peak
A very good album.
An eclectic, sophisticated album with elements of pop, jazz and even prog rock
There's really nothing else that sounds like Supertramp. I guess Queen is kind of close, but there's something about this mix of spectacular harmonies, clever lyrics, fantastic arrangements, and great performances that stands apart. This album is full of bangers - "Bloody Well Right", "Hide In Your Shell", "Dreamer", "Rudy", and the title track - and none of the other tracks are weak. It's all good stuff.
para nosotras las pianistas AME
Liked this more than most recent rock albums. Playful at times, which I liked. Toe-tapper.
Classic
Screw it, this album is fun. I wasn't expected this from a mid-70s prog rock album, but it was a ton of fun to listen to this album. The bombastic (and frankly onanistic) nature of prog rock normally forces me to buckle into what I'm about to listen to. There are only so many space-age instrument sounds, guitar solos, and self-congratulatory/juvenile one can be ready for. But what I heard instead was an album whose music sensibilities never get in the way of of the fact that music can be fun to listen to. Yes, the lyrics are large and philosophical, guitar rifts suitably shredding, and the use of piano and woodwind instruments are odd but beautiful at times. But whereas other bands may attempt to push an image that they want to create for themselves, Supertramp sounds honest in their eccentricities here. And I've grown to really appreciate honestly when listening to conceptual albums like this, because without it I might as well be listening to 5 philosophy undergrads sniffing their own farts. Plus, Bloody Well Right's chorus has been stuck in the back of my mind since I was a kid. That should count for something. Go listen to this album. It's prog rock, but far more accessible than what I was expecting. Highlights are School, Bloody Well Right (as previously mentioned) and If Everyone was Listening (love a good theatre metaphor).
I think this is the first Supertramp album I have went front to back, which I did many times yesterday. Liked it. ELO vibes at times. Pink Floyd others. Cool shit, will come back to this one
Fun album, with a couple certified "Classic Rock" radio station hits. The prog rock-ness makes it just quirky and weird enough to keep it interesting.
School and Bloody Well Right are fantastic openers. Bloody definitely better of the two for me personally, as I like the groove better, though I understand School is supposed to take on more of a ballad type of a role.
Quite different from the Supertramp I was familiar with but still enjoyable
There's just something about Supertramp that I love. The tenor of the lead vocals. The skills of the musicians. The song craftmanship. The epicness of their songs without being 15 minute opuses. It just works for me.
Not to be eye-rolled at, which I totally did before. They’re actually kinda great. With the piano they even have an Elton John-thing going on.
got this on vinyl and never listened
Very fun to listen to and talked about different topics than normally found in music
Only song I knew on here was "Dreamer," and I don't like it. Still don't like it, but I like all the other ones!
