Album Summary

The Last of the True Believers is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith, released in 1986 by Philo Records. The acclaim accorded her from her previous album, Once in a Very Blue Moon, and this album earned her a contract with a major recording company. Here, Griffith continued her turn toward a more country-oriented work than her first two albums, which were primarily folk-sounding. It also includes two songs which were later hits for Kathy Mattea, "Love at the Five and Dime" from Walk the Way the Wind Blows (1986) and "Goin' Gone", her first number one, from Untasted Honey (1987).

Enjoyable, a grande I like and easy on the ears.

Solid album, not really my sound but I can appreciate how special it is. 5/10

perfect album, and incredulous that I've never heard of her before. incredible songwriting, beautiful voice. immediate classic.

Really not my thing, still good voice 3/5

Today is the first day that the new albums from the 2026 edition of the book have been added. I was hoping to get one of those today, that would have been pretty cool, and being so close to finishing anyway, about 20% of all the my remaining albums are from the new edition. But instead I'm stuck with this, it's not awful, I can say that. But my God is it boring. It's another one of those where while trying to write a review for it, I'm just left thinking "wait, what actually did this album even sound like?" Because it's that damn forgettable. Here's to hoping I get Brat or Songs Of A Lost World tomorrow.

Quite liked it tbh

Even the prostitute song is boring.

3rd I haven't heard out of 27! Very pleasant, she's got a great voice, but there's not much in the way of standout songs. A lot of the songs do blend together, but there's a lot good to it. Gorgeous production, love how the cello and violas sound on the last track. Think maybe if I was in a mood more befitting an emotional wallowing session it would click more.

Nice voice, but country twang doesn't jive.

White, sweet, yet surprisingly soulful, Nanci Griffith is like the female John Denver: her heart's clearly in the right place, she knows what she's doing, but there's a level of embarrassment that comes w/ listening to her. I think the best country, e'en at its most festive, has a great deal of pain behind it - it's tragedy that funds its humane language & melodies. I don't hear a lot of pain in Griffith's voice, just as I don't hear much in Denver's. That has to be a considerable drawback. & yet, Griffith, like Denver, can surely sing, & she has good songs to her name. Is The Last Of The True Believers an all-out mess of sentimentality & whiteness? I don't think so. Is it ultimately a record that is yet too white & too sentimental? I think it must be. WHITE!

Nicely done but I found it a bit boring

This is a nice introduction to Nanci Griffith but the production obscures the heartfelt musicianship and longing of her live performances such as One Fair Summer Evening

absolutely delightful would be fantastic for long road trips I reckon

Sighed a bit when I heard the first few bars as this project has taught me I'm really not a fan of country - but enjoyed this album! Good lyrics, a wonderful voice and it doesnt outstay its welcome. 7/10

Decent folk-y country. Griffith has an interesting twang that almost sounds foreign. My favorite track was "One of These Days", and it's the first track I've added to the playlist in over a month.

Pretty basic stuff, but it sounds pretty good too.

Excellent country. Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did.

It was quite good given it three stars.

Slow shuffle folk country. Reminded me a lame lullaby

Not groundbreaking by any means, but very pretty.

A familiarity that reaches into the mind with hints of nostalgia and comfort

2.5 - ok

I'm not much of a folk or country enthusiast, but this album is pretty strong. I enjoyed her writing and story telling. Reminded me of country from the late 80's and early 90's. Really nice album.

I thought the album was alright, I don't mind this kind of music, so had no problem with it, but nothing stuck out to me either. 3.25 at most I'd say.

Impeccable vibes

Reminded me of the times i had as a kid playing GTA:SA and roaming around the countryside with K-Rose radio station. 4/5. Good

Very Emmylou Harris. Folky country. Not bad but not life changing.

Marking this 4 just because it's different & pleasant and better than the other stuff I've been getting for like 2 months.

This one was nice and unexpected. Nice voice.

I think I am rating this higher than I may have otherwise because I was in need of some guitar country singer songwriter

erste song isch jo zuuuucker. love at the five and dime isch au suuper schö mega subtil instrumentiert ich finds hammer. es isch sooo so guete country afoch? wow. one of these days isch au super. s isch alle so minimal mer ghört jeeedes detail. wing and the wheel meega schön chratzigi giige häää? what the fuck unexpected füfi. super.

Really nice. A really beautiful voice. Some cool songwriting. Awesome arrangements that sound a bit like country clichés but I guess that's country. They sound full and warm

Country....for me every song sounds the same.

This is the most 3 star album ever. Good musician ship, good singer. Inoffensive. Absolutely forgettable as the notes play.

It’s country music, so I didn’t expect much, and it didn’t deliver much.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Definitely falls into that style of country like Johnny Cash.

I dig it, nice songs and some great players, but I also can hear the 80’s/90’s sterile perfection and decadence that alt country and Americana would develop to rail against. Cool context.

Very sweet voice

Old country - not my bag

there's a gem in here somewhere behind all the fiddle and steel guitar

What can I say, I'm a sucker for 80s and 90s country.

Beautiful voice

Well written country/folk, but not my cup of tea.

This is one of the reasons I love this project. As frustrating as it can be at times, moments like this come along. I had never listened to Nanci Griffith before but was so taken with her mellow, folksy charm.

Actually rather good album, quite a surprise!

Beautiful songs beautiful voice what more could you want really? 4.5/5.0 Best Song: Fly By Night

Perfectly lovely, but at times a bit too lovely, at times a bit boring

Nice sound, like Stevie Nicks

Nanci had me in my feelings in the best way possible. This is that drinking a tall glass of whiskey while staring longingly out of a rainy window music.

Pretty good

Decently written and recorded country/americana music, but no real hard-hitting tracks.

- I don't get it, this album failed to resonate w me but I dig her album cover! read about it, that is lyle lovett dancing : ) interesting how she always has herself on the cover holding books by Southern writers - on the back of this one Mike, she's holding Lonesome Dove : )

Headed to Sunday School. Uplifting, sure, but it lacks that something that makes me believe.

Like a pleasant spring breeze with hint of the hard winter left behind. An easy listen - in a good way. 3.5 stars.

Decent, actually.

another country album, lets do it reminds me of john denver, and i love john denver, so i love this this song has such a soothing quality, i love country songs when they actually have something sentimental to talk about just some good old fashioned country, whats there not to love a good country love song can be some of the sweetest music you can hear, i really dont get the hate for this genre this one has a real bluegrass feeling to it, love the storytelling here a little basic but still sounds good this one has a bit of a neil young quality, not to the same level but i just get some vibes of him god her voice is just so good. she captures the folk-country essence perfectly another amazing love song, Nanci is an underappreciated writer of her era banger of a song, can i call a country song a banger? i dont care nice somber slow song to close out the album, shes great at both country is the most overhated music genre imo. you can find a lot of good country music if you just know where to look. Nanci Griffith generally goes overlooked in country music conversations, but i think she has a lot of great qualities in her music that i just wanted to appreciate. there are others who have done her sound better, but that doesnt mean shes not a talented artist. this album is a solid 7

normalito, no siento que destaque en nada, ni para bien ni para mal

Ок, кантрі\американа альбом. Душевно, добре таке влітку ввечері слухати.

just some good solid 80's country music. Doesn't try to be anything else, lots of great storytelling and some good folk style sound is always welcome. Seriously that slide guitar always adds so much.

Finally some country music on this list. And a decent album of it too! Country is an absolute blind spot on this list and that’s a shame.

This is the kind of music I enjoy the most at this moment, so it is difficult to be unbiased. I think for the longest time, I could not stomach the pure lightness of this kind of music. Without strife, how could there be peace and happiness? As life relentlessly marches on, I realized the futility of having to find meaning in things I consume. As a result, I learned to let the melody wash over me and carry me to their intended destination. In this case, loves found a shoulder. 5/5

Part of me wonders why this album is on the list since it doesn't seem like it was wildly popular or impactful to the genre but I may be missing some context there. That said, I think this is an enjoyable "classic country" album that reminds me of a time when country music had much more artistry and better songwriting. While this album didn't really have a standout single for me, "Banks of the Pontchartrain" tugged on my heartstrings a little and reminded me of good times as a kid at the Pontchartrain lakefront. 3.5/5

Very run-of-the-mill country songs. I thought Fly By Night was alright.

I thought this was a really pleasant album to listen to.

This is a cute country album - tho nothing too much else to say about it.

The first album of the Supermarket duopoly in Australia (for context, the album cover pictures the word Woolworths on a building, and there is an album called Coles Corner, having the word Coles on a building) (I know this is random, but let me have this as a way to be excited by these two random albums). Other than that, it's a nice and sweet country album, perfect for a sunny day road trip.

Just the opening few bars were enough to confirm my fears. I can't abide country music. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ❌️ Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆(4/10) Default Total reviewed : 427 Already owned : 95 Purchased : 21 To buy : 5 Nope : 306

The album cover threw me off because it has pop vibes. I was expecting something like Cyndi Lauper. This is a really pleasant country album.

This album reminds me of my dad’s work that hosted an annual farmer/client appreciation dinner. It was always in the summer before harvest season kicked off. Nearly half of the clients were Hutterite colonies so they were always psyched to drink at an open bar. As a child, we were always excited for the bouncy castles, ice cream and clowns. Usually it meant 4-5 hours running around with your friends. As much as a I still don’t like the music. This one has a bit more nostalgia. It was always a bit of a cultural experience and usually some “fun” prizes like a new kitchen knife set.

That's more my speed, very cool chill country album.

I was actually rather pleased with this one. Not sure if it just hit the right time of the morning or what, but I enjoyed it more than most country albums. Storytelling country, though all generally slower tempo, with a good voice and not too much modern day twangy.

This came out in 1986. By that time, I was in Germany, I was listening to punk more often than not and my days of this genre of Americana/country-tinged stuff was definitely a past pleasure. I have never heard this before now. And it seems dated and, to be honest, boring. Still I could have imagined myself at a younger, hippier time in my life to have enjoyed this album. I still love the Dead, but this genre isn't to my taste now. 3 "kind of bored" stars.

Surprisingly enjoyable. Like a CD your dad would have that really just feels like home.

It was sweet, but pretty forgettable. Kind of reminded me of a Texas and less catchyversion of Amy Grant.

I guess this album would greatly benefit its rating if I listened to it on the road. Good songs, but nothing too remarkable.

This album feels like forgiving your husband for fucking everything up, because look how pretty he is!

lo ame, me hizo acordar un poco a la voz de stevie. love she. me guarde varios temas

This is a great album and a real storytelling masterpiece. Listening to it felt like moving through quiet countryside scenes full of longing and the hope of true love. Everything works well here. The stories, the instrumentals and the vocals all feel connected and genuine. Nanci’s voice is clear and warm, carrying a lot of quiet emotion without ever forcing it. The songs have a natural flow and a strong sense of place. You can almost see the landscapes and the people she is writing about. There is a gentle, reflective mood that stays consistent from start to finish. The production is smooth and well handled. Nothing feels cluttered or overdone. The acoustic instruments sit comfortably around the voice, and the overall sound remains clean and inviting. It has that classic mid 80s folk and country quality that still feels natural today. The Last of the True Believers is a strong and heartfelt record. Full of good songs, fine playing and a real sense of atmosphere.

I didn't hate it. Not sure when I'd ever want to listen to it again, but I didn't hate it...

Never heard of her but this was a delight of an album.

Country before it got truly awful, but country is still the worst music genre

It was alright country music. The guitar is pretty and well-played and her voice is great Standouts The Last Of The True Believers Love At The Five & Dime 3/5

Tolerable, and, at times, even sounds good. Which, when considering these countryphobic ears, is an impressive achievement.

A little country, a little folk, a sweet voice, smooth harmonies—what more can you ask? This is an album and an artist I’ll definitely come back to.

Love her. Excellent album. There’s a killer vid of her performing 5 and dime on Austin city limits. Got to see her at Stan Fest a long time ago. A real gem.

I revisited this once I wasn't so tired and was in a better mood. It's pretty much what I thought it would be. It's good and I can hear it pulling from Joni. I would never complain if someone else threw this one but I can't see me ever spinning it myself. I'm not in a super open minded place today listening to this. I think there's something going on here that's good but my tired ears just can't hear it.

Surprisingly good. I've never heard of her before but she's got a great voice.

I don’t hate it but I’m not really digging it either. Too many slow songs

2.3/5 An album that doesn't have any real highs or lows but it just flows along quite nicely. Nanci has a lovely voice and this was a pleasant listen even if it isn't a genre I normally listen too.

A: What in Dolly Parton och Bruce Springsteens pappa, eiku mamma? Hhh Nääää. ghhh hhh hhäh. Helt mysigt. Lite väl sådär we are going back to Alabama eller någon annan såndän countrystat, delstat. 2.5/5 "The Last of the True Believers" 6.5 pretty good, hard to understand her in parts but sounds like classic country twangy style "Love at the Five and Dime" 7 really good slow dance kinda country song with some good slide guitar. "St. Olav's Gate" 6 good but not as noteworthy nice fiddle and mandolin tho "More Than a Whisper"5 "Banks of the Pontchartrain"5.5 "Lookin' for the Time (Workin' Girl)"6.3 "Goin' Gone"4 yawn "One of These Days" 5 "Love's Found a Shoulder" 5.3 average. "Fly by Night" 6.5 little more uptempo "The Wing and the Wheel 5 average

This is a solid example of country done well in the more traditional way than “new/pop” country. 3.5/5

With such a soothing angelic voice, how could you not like this? It’s like listening to one long story and each song serves as a chapter. A perfect example of an album to help you forget about life for awhile.

This really grew on me. Sounded very….wholesome. Not sure if that’s the right word but all I can come up with. A couple really nice melodies and seemed to have much more substance than the pop country scene now. 2.75

Apparently I enjoy the ladies of old(ish) school country. Ratings on this album are too low. Thought about rounding up to improve the average but sticking with a strong 3*. 3.75/5
