Its different. Slow and i enjoyed it.
Here’s a nice surprise. This is not my genre at all, but good song writing is good song writing.
Sweet country music. The first half was quite uplifting, not as moping as most country songs, which I appreciated. Stand-out: The Last Of The True Believers
great vibes. kinda made me think of the album equivalent of little women
It's fine. Clean production, very competent performances, a distinctive voice, though with a slightly off-puttingly juvenile quality, the flash of an edge here and there. Nothing remarkable, but totally listenable.
Sweet
Enjoyable
1. More than a Whisper Looking for the time Goin gone Folk/Country
This sounds like it could have been released today as an alt country album. Really enjoyed it, thought it was really good, flowed well.
This is not at all my kind of music but I have to acknowledge that it is undoubtedly an excellent album.
Can't pinpoint exactly why but I really enjoyed this. She has a great voice that really suits the folky/country feel. Will probably listen to this one again.
Huh dit is miss wel de beste country die ik ooit heb gehoord
A unique sound, amazing voice.
Good country album!
3.5
Yeah. Americana in a bottle. Not too much country, not too fart smelly, and she’s singing beautifully. I want more of this.
good time of singer songwriter country. wonderful
Pleasant surprise, she has a great voice. Not my normal style of music that I listen to but this was a chill enjoyable listen.
C&W is the last musical style that I'm ever listening to. But I really enjoyed this album. It has enough folk elements and there is an honesty in her voice. Solid album.
Wonderful voice and lyrics
Beautiful! Will listen again in a car.
I must like Folksy music because I liked this one to0
pretty good sound d more modern like a song i would like if it was released today not just appreciate it
Maybe I’m becoming a country girl? Fly by night was my standout. Fun and fast paced. Loved her lyrics. This was a good listen.
3/4
Nanci Griffith’s The Last Of The True Believers is an album I strangely fuck with. Country was never my thing, but Nanci seems to structure it in a way that doesn’t t make me want to pull my hair out. I love her voice, and the strings of whatever instrument is playing in the background. My favorites are Lookin’ For The Time (Workin’ Girl), Love’s Found A Shoulder, and Fly By Night. All in all, The Last Of The True Believers is a good album. Best Song: Lookin' For The Time (Workin' Girl) Worst Song: St. Olav's Gate
Really enjoyed this one. Great melodies and songwriting.
This was a nice surprise, as I only knew Nanci Griffith for "From A Distance", which I find quite cheesy. There's some really solid songwriting on here though, lovely voice and great banjo playing too from Béla Fleck (of Jingle All the Way fame). I found some of the songs a bit dull, but the standout tracks (Title Track, Love at the Five and Dime, Banks of the Pontchartrain, One of these Days, and Fly by Night) made it worth my while. The production is nice and warm, as a whole the album feels ideal for a road trip or something similar. I like an album that doesnt outstay it's welcome too!
Really good country/folk album. I will definitely be listening to this again, it's really fantastic. Never heard it before until now.
This was totally new to me - I'd never heard of Nanci Griffith before but I have to say I really loved this. It reminded me of Tha Rankin Family which is a local-to-me group from a similar time period. Also Joni Mitchell and that hippy-folk movement of singer-songwriter stuff, but leaning harder on folky-country rather than rambley poetry and jazziness... Anyway this was a great surprise and I will def be listening to this again!
An excellent county folk album. but it has a strange recording and I'm not sure if it's on purpose or an error my end, it sounds like it parts a warped record. The music is there but it fades and distorts slightly. But I did enjoy and I found it to be very chill
Not sure how I missed this gem at the time.
Very easy to listen to. I appreciate the "good ol' country twang." Had to look to see when this was recorded, thinking it had to be 60s or so, but turned out it was 80s.
4-
great Album
I have never heard an entire Nanci Griffith album and I really enjoyed this. I see some of the comments saying this is pop country music and others saying this is traditional country music. I take that as a compliment, because it shows how Griffith can cross genres. I enjoyed this album a lot and would recommend it to others. I liked "More Than a Whisper" and "Last of the True Believers" the most and I do not think either song was a hit. Not sure what this says about me.
Her voice? It hasn’t aged particularly well, though there’s always a note of yearning and sweetness there. To be kinder—it fits the songs, meeting them on their own turf. Her songwriting and interpretations, her overall feel and her choices? They’ve done better and have aged extremely well. Griffith’s approach is a fitting companion for like-minded artists like John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young—champions of songs as little towns or paintings, artists who do their thing and are distinctive because of it. This record is a masterclass in capturing small town loneliness and treating it with epic-scale emotional gravity. Her work deserves to endure. This record is a big part of that.
I'm always so surprised by these types of albums because I would never choose to listen to them on my own, but when I'm "forced", I end up really enjoying them. So many sweet and simply songs that are just downright pleasant to listen to. I really appreciate this type of music. Banks of the Pontchartrain and Goin' Gone are some of my favs.
Really lovely. Like a warm mug of tea on a crisp fall day. I will add her to my cozy rotation for sure.
Great vocals and story telling. Enjoyed this one a lot
A short and sweet album! Reminds me of Emmylou Harris. Great harmonies, and she has a really beautiful voice.
Very pleasant album. Country Carol King. If you listen to too many in a row, it’s can start to sound samey, but this album put me in a good mood.
I liked it! She has a cool voice
Fourth studio album, anyone? A country-folk album? Sign me up!
Pretty stellar for sure. I had not heard of her before but she will be in my rotation for sure.
Surprisingly good
Very good and interesting but not too groundbreaking. Lots of songs I liked.
Lookin for the time(Working girl) is een halve diss track, heerlijk. FAVO: Love at the five & Dime, St Olav's gate, More than a whisper, Lookin for the time
This a really well produced version of things I wouldn’t typically rate this high. If you’re looking for a golden voice and Americana folk country singer songwriter, this is a great female staple.
Veldig deilig musikk å høre på morningen
I have a soft spot for female country folk singers and Nanci Griffith is great. Really liked this album, her voice is great and the backing band is excellent.
I liked this alot more then I was expecting to. Country but not over produced. Almost more folk. I'd listen to this again.
I was surprised how much I liked this album. Probably a 3.5 for me, I'll round up because I want to listen to it again. I though the vocals were really good and I enjoyed them. Sort of a cross between folk and country, leaning a little more towards the folk side and I liked it.
Beautifully constructed songs.
This is the most surprising listen I've had to date. It's country.. but in spite of that, it's really, really enjoyable. This is a very accessible album that is easy to listen to. Griffith's voice is so beautiful, rounded and warm and the instrumentatino - guitar, slide, etc, as you'd expect - is just really pleasing to the ear warm and simple. Just a great album
Nice album
I'd never heard this before and loved it. Great country album.
I don't have a huge amount to say about this album, but it's a really nice country album from an era where country music was much less shitty than it is now. She has a beautiful voice 4/5
Nice voice.
It’s a really nice album, she has a great voice and the production is amazing for an 80s album so it has a timeless feel. I thought the other reviews were incredibly harsh so it gets a 4 from me even though I don’t like country.
Even though nothing really stuck out to me on this album, I really want to remember it because it had an overall great vibe. Perfect music for driving through the heartland, especially last of the true believers, and is just a real pleasant listen all the way through.
Hidden gem perhaps? I liked it far more than I anticipated. My kind of country. 3.5/5
I only had one ear bud in but I liked this
Great songwriting. Strong lyrics with relatable characters. Almost Prine-esque. The instrumentation isn’t totally my thing, but nothing too damming.
Liked by me
Hit the spot.
I liked it, easy to listen to.
Heard before: No Favourites: Banks of the Pontchartrain, lookin for the time (working girl), one of these days Finally an artist that I haven't heard of. And she seems pretty good, I enjoyed this album. It is very pleasant indeed.
Beautiful. I love this era of country
I liked the music, it was relaxing and nice 4 stars
This was a refreshing album. I had never heard of Nanci Griffith and was pleased to find this folk heavy country music infused with Celtic and Appalachian influence. Her voice has a lilting quality and she carves out intricate and delicate melodies. While this album can easily become background noise, it certainly deserves a close listen.
I liked this album quite a bit. I'm not a huge country fan, but I liked this much better than the crap that is soft-rock with a country twang; no thank you. Her voice reminds me a nice mix of Dolly and Loretta. This was a nice album to have on today.
I want to go back
11th August 2023 Listened during the day while on the way to and from mum and dad’s, saw Rowie in the pub. Loved this, beautiful folk album.
4.0
Really love the storytelling in the lyrics and her voice is soothing and beautifully tells the stories of the songs.
This is not my type of music but I loved her voice and it just worked for me
country Bem agradável
Favorite songs were "One of These Days" and "Fly By Night"
basic and canonical country conservative twang that is surprisingly endearing in its simplicity. not sure why it's on this list though. 3.75/5
Well constructed and performed country, not strictly my genre but I can appreciate it. Perhaps a little too clean and squared away.
Never one for the twang-y music, this one really surprised me. No fluff, truly great voice and songwriting. Was a nice change and a good discovery. But get too excited, I'm still not a fan of Indigo Girls.
A beautifully crafted album. Country normally isn’t my genre, but I like this. The country instruments (mandolin, banjo, pedal steel) seem more like accents than the main sound, which I appreciate. I would like there to be fewer slow songs and more with the infectious energy on the rest of the album.
Although I normally don't listen to country, I found myself really enjoying some of the songs on here
I like this the more I listen to it. It's very sweet sounding, and I like this folk / country line she is riding.
Great voice, great songs, great playing.
actually really good old school country with a female vocalist 4.5
I'm a noob to Ms. Griffith and if this album is at all indicative of her total output, then I will be listening to much more. Really liked it overall. "Love's Found a Shoulder" was a late album standout to my ears. Basically, I'm as jealous as Andy's mom.
Fantastic album
Beautiful.
Haven't listened to much country but this was a lovely addition to the country playlist, very charming, and the use of the mandolins and slide guitar helped it out a lot. I'm definitely finding more country I really enjoy . Favourite Tracks - Love At The Five And Dime, St. Olav's Gate
Não conhecia, e gostei bastante de todas as músicas! :-)
Lovely voice
More Than A Whisper just knocked me on my ass
This is a wonderful little country album chock full of life. Wonderful storytelling is what I can best encapsulate this album. Enjoyable. That is another great word.
Sadboy anthem

Last of the true believers- Great opening track really setting vibe of album👍 Love at the five and dime- Sweet song about a slightly dysfunctional relationship👍 St Olavs gate- Didn’t stand out to me More than a whisper-Cute lyrics here Banks of the Pontchartrain- Very solid upbeat song👍 Lookin for the time- Like the live version more but this is still 👍 Goin’ Gone- Find the conceit pretty uninteresting here One of these days, Love’s found a shoulder- Perfectly charming songs Fly by night- Another great tune, love the carefree lyrics👍 Wing and the wheel- Doesn’t do much for me Very pleasant album, I love her vocals and there is some good tunes on the track list. Found a few of the slower tracks more boring, but that’s just personal preference. 4/5
Gezellige Nancy
I love her. I’ve seen her in concert, watched her host or appear on Austin City Limits a few times, and listened to her perform, particularly on ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’, which sounds a bit like this album. She is wonderful. Yes, I still use the present tense with her despite her leaving her corporeal self behind about a year ago. And I love her.
rimelig godt
Not a huge fan of country but I liked this
Lovey folk/country album.
Right at the intersection of folk and country, which is a very nice place to be. The band are very tight, the vocals are flawless, the lyrics talk of an America that doesn't exist anymore (if it ever did). Wonderful
8/10. This was really nice
Some good Americana / Country has made it to the list. While not her best, this is a very good album and an example of how good the music coming out of Nashville was when the pop-Country fad started making waves and changing the genre for the worst. 4/5.
I had never heard of Nanci Griffith but she is a gifted country singer/songwriter. It's easy to see how she influenced the likes of the Dixie Chicks. I'm personally not a fan of country though.
really liked it, great to hear some real country music not the cheesy soft-rock trucks guns n'Applebees travesty it has become. Will check out more of her stuff
Brand new artist and album (to me), and I'm already over-the-moon in love after one full listen. I love Neko Case. And I "like" Alison Krauss. But I already know I'd take Nanci Griffith over either of them (although I'll still continue riding hard for Neko). What an unexpected hidden gem. Perhaps the only thing keeping me from rating it a 5 is I don't want to go all the way on the first date.
Something I have discovered about myself during this vinyl odyssey is that I have quite a fondness for what I consider the best country. Yes, that qualifier makes it almost tautological. But remember that even the most ardent country fans would recognise that a lot of country is banal, overproduced, saccharine, meatheaded or just a bit naff. Anyway, like plenty of people my age, I first began wondering if country had some charms I had, in my ignorance, cold-shouldered after the late renaissance of Johnny Cash (actually, with me it was more that my love of Elvis steered me towards the rest of the Million Dollar Quartet, but you know what I mean). After that, it was a short jaunt to Hank Williams and Merle Haggard (who I prefer to Johnny Cash, in my standard contrarian manner), but I had no drive to explore further than there. I'm British: country is never going to be seen as cool over here. But I just looked up my stats, and country currently sits as my 5th favourite genre, with a flattering average of 4. The best album the generator's introduced to me is Time (The Revelator) by Gillian Welch, an astonishing exploration of Americana's potential. Much of the classic rock I relish openly declares its debt to country. So, I guess I like country. So where does The Last of the True Believers sit? A comfortable 4. Genuinely sweet rather than diabetes-inducing, and although a touch slight, The Last of the True Believers proves delightful throughout if you like country. If you don't, I don't think you'll gain much out of this, and that's fine: it's hardly an offence to dislike a style of music. I should say this is afflicted with that common ailment of 4-star albums: it's more a collection of very good songs than a cohesive album. But is that a fault per se? Hendrix's Are You Experienced is pretty much just a bounding-together of individual tracks, and I still consider that a masterpiece. Mind, Are You Experienced is a collection of some of the greatest songs ever, not just ones that are very good.
The Last of the True Believers was probably my introduction to Nanci Griffith, but I'm not sure if I've heard the entired album all at once. I have enjoyed Griffith's oddly happy take on sad stories since I first heard her music. I enjoy her storytelling, and the easily recognizable quality of her voice. I am surprised that I haven't listened to her in so long. I was happy to see The Last of the True Believers as my recommendation for the day. "Love at the Five and Dime" is an all time favorite from Griffith - finding joy in great storytelling and slight sadness. "Banks of the Pontchartrain", "Love's Found a Shoulder", and "Fly by Night" are new favorites. I hope I won't take so long to come back again.
A pleasant voice and catchy tunes. Combined nice with a train ride. An otherwise unremarkable album.
Wow, zaskakująco fajne. Bardzo przyjemny głos. Nie jest to jakaś płyta, do której bym chciał wracać regularnie, ale słuchało się naprawdę miło
A really nice album with catchy singable songwriting, a storytellers gift for a beautiful lyric as well as production that is graceful and always in service to the song. I could see Patti Griffith holding the same lofty position in my library as the brilliant Lucinda Williams. 4 🌟
Particularly liked the 1st track, the last of the true believers. Country.
Love her voice. Really nice songs. Not my bag, but still appreciate them. It's like music that my wife listens to and I don't complain about it.
I'm either getting old, or this list is making me more of a country fan. A solid set of songs from front to back, and doesn't overstay its welcome at all. Favorite tracks: "The Last of the True Believers", "Love At the Five and Dime", "Fly By Night", "Lookin' For the Time"
Not really the kind of music I’d seek out on my own but this is def the kind of stuff my mom would have on cassette tapes to listen to in the car so it feels super nostalgic
What a nostalgic sound! It's a harmonious album--hard to pick a highlight. Super charming.
Really solid album. Calls to mind some very specific memories and reminds me of when I learned that country music was good and worth listening to. A lot of the songs sounded the same, which was a bit of a bummer, but Love at the Five and Dime stands out as one of the few songs which belongs on both my happy and sad playlists. I had never heard of Nanci Griffith before, but now I'm glad that I have!
Great folksy vibes; music feels familiar. Feels like a precursor to Bonnie Raitt or someone we'd get at JFFA.
Great
Major Allison Krauss vibes. I'm here for it. Takes me back to my childhood in a cozy way.
It’s just nice. Nothing more, nothing less
Quintessential country
New to me, and enjoyable enough. Like so much country on the list it's lacking a bit of edge. At least it's sweet, rather than saccharin, and there are notes of sadness along the way. But it's missing some of what makes Iris Dement or Waxahatchee (both mentioned as comparisons in other reviews) great. But I can hear some of the folk background, and it's a nice enough find.
Not quite the old time country that I love, but not quite fully sterilized modern pop country either. She’s got a nice voice, but all the songs are very similar.
Quite ok, nice background music. Flows by without any effect and after the album you wonder what you just listening to. Why is this album on this list? A great mystery, which probably no one can answert.
Nanci Griffith is like Allison Kraus. Everyone should listen to a little every once in a while.
Generic but not bad 3.5/5
It's not bad but I'm not a believer
Day895 - i’m a fan of folk-bluegrass country so this was a pleasure to hear
Wow- that photo on the cover is pretty priceless for historical documentation. People dressed like that! I was there… I was a kid. I remember wondering about it, what people thought was “fashionable.” Guess the same can be said for any era. But the 80’s… were special. No idea about this album or artist. Combined with that album cover… it doesn’t bode well. But I have been happily surprised before… So this one’s actually hard. I was pleasantly surprised. I almost want to give it a 4. The songs are well written. The production is good, works well with her voice, nothing is strangely trying too hard. But… she falls prey to the issue of all singer-songwriters and women in particular: is only love, relationships, their beginnings, their failures worthy of a song? Is that all the inspiration you have to draw on? 3 Boolean:true?
Meget smukt country folk album! Standouts: More Than A Whisper, Love's Found A Shoulder, The Wing & The Wheel
Ni slabo!
Pretty comfy country album. Songwriting was good, if not a tad saccharine at times. No real complaints other than the fact that things sounded a little samey throughout.
#973. Decent, I guess. Kinda sounds like a Reba McEntire knockoff. 3/5: acceptable
A perfectly cromulent country album, with clever and wholesome lyrics well sung over well-executed musical backing. It's just not my thing.
Good songwriting. It turns out, that’s what I like. An enjoyable listen.
cute!
Not really my type of music, but very enjoyable.
Country/folk with great vocals
Nice voice, it hasn't converted me to folk music but it sounded nice.
I mean it's alright I guess. Although a bit unremarkable I appreciate the folky, bluegrassy production. The focus is soley on the songwriting and Nanci's performance as a singer and a storyteller which I really appeciated. She stands front and center on every track which creates a very inticate feeling, all be it a bit dull. The lyrical content is suprisingly low on the old over used country cliches and Nanci brings a lot of personality to the tracks. Nothing spectacular, but all in all a decent once-over listen. 3/5.
Wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it was a pleasant listen. I've come to enjoy more country as I've become an old man.
It’s fine. Refreshing after Snoop Dogg, but not something I would seek out normally.
Twangy country-folk. Drags a bit in parts, but mostly pleasant
Always considered myself a Nanci Griffith fan but have never listened to this one before. Nice record
Beautiful voice really. Just a bit of a bloated album
Feel very similarly as the previous album, however, I feel the songwriting was stronger here and this was just better. The singing, instruments, etc. A little better than last album "Grevious Angel". Liked Songs: "Love At The Five & Dine" , "St. Olav's Gate" , "Banks Of The Pontchartrain" , "Goin' Gone" , "One Of These Days" , "Fly By Night" , "The Wing & The Wheel"
It was fine, I'm not the biggest country fan, especially not this more clean kind, so it didn't do much for me. Good voice tho.
This trots along pleasantly and inoffensively. There are some nice touches though e.g. the violin work. Not a fan of that particular country style of vocal. Nothing particularly grabbed me
3/5
This is not my favourite genre, but I really appreciate the strong songwriting.
pretty enjoyable but nothing to write home about.
Horse girl core 💖🐴🌾
It’s not bad.
I knew the 80s were the beginning of the end of good country music. Nancy Griffith was no Dolly Parton, and "TLotTB" proves this. No song on the album really stood out to me. Despite this, "TLotTB" is an okay album. It didn't deserve its place on the list, though. 3 stars for "The Last of the True Believers".
Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ganz okay.
Pretty country, gave me some nostalgic vibe. But there is just something about the lyrics that makes it slightly less enjoyable then more popular song writers like Dolly. Sometime more obvious that at times just doesn't connect or flow as well.
This was a pretty album. It leaned a little too twangy country for me, but still a pleasant listen!
reminds me of Waxahatchee
Nice country with nice vocals but nothing really special
Pehmeää ja tunteellista countrya. Ihan ok. Ei tästä oikein muuta sanottavaa keksi.
I actually listen to quite a lot of alt country and americana, but I still have a prejudice against 'normal' country music, and unfortunately this sounds like that. Jaunty steel guitar, sentimental lyrics. I'm sure it's fine but it's not for me. This is also one of the things that highlights the bias of this list - there's rather a lot of country music but, so far, almost no traditional music from other posts of the world.
Beautiful singer and lovely album. I've never heard of her but I am glad to have discovered her. Sad to hear that she has already passed, she seemed like a real one.
3.5

Helt ok. Påminner lite om Emmy Lou Harris men inte lika bra röst. Gillar albumet men älskar inte. Låten Fly by night är riktigt bra!
3 stars
alright country album although i believe it lost some of what made it special through time
This was a pleasant listen. It felt a bit like a more country/folk Carole King album. The vocals had a Stevie Nicks-esque quality, just a little softer. Maybe if her era of Fleetwood Mac had leaned more into a country sound you'd get a result close to this. Even for something that wasn't in a genre I particularly love, I thought it was solidly good. Overall: 3.1/5
nice enough
mellow vocals good stories
Easy going. Almost too much so. Another review described it as white women drinking wine, sitting in a circle around a campfire. Not a bad listen. Just done know I’ll return to it.
Good folk singing
Great voice. Good songs. Surprised she isn't mentioned more with the women of country.
One of the better 80s country albums I've heard.
Very smooth, very simple country songs but I loved it. The steel guitar and the banjo were the stars of the show, but I really dug the storytelling throughout Highlights: Banks of the Ponchartrain, One of These Days
Twangy, but a nice, calm musical interlude. Not bad on a Tuesday morning.
I appreciate a good cry as much as the next listener, but this album is like watching Steel Magnolias on repeat. It's sweet country music, but it's also about as subtle as a truckload of confetti. Each song feels like it was written with a single tear rolling down Nanci's cheek. I mean, I get it, life's a mixed bag and all that.. but can we maybe save the emotional rollercoaster for after I've had my coffee? Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - The Last If The True Believers - Banks Of The Pontchartrain - Goin' Gone
En general bien, y las 3 últimas me las he guardado: "Love's Found a Shoulder", "Fly by Night" y "The Wing and the Wheel". Han caído varios de este Country más light cantado por voces femeninas que merecen la pena. Este tipo de música es difícil que la escuches en España en la radio así que bien venida a mi colección.
Fly By Night and give this album a try.
This is a well produced album and I believe Nancy Griffith was a revere player and I really liked the song fly by night.
I had only heard the earnest folk music from Nanci Griffith, which is something I do not love, though done very skillfully and with admirable earnestness. This was much better.
It’s a solid record, and it’s probably better than I'm in the mood for today. I can respect this more than I would ever actively reach for it.
Cute lil country album but that’s about it.
I saw Nanci Griffith in concert in the early 2000s on her Clock Without Hands Tour - my girlfriend at the time really liked her. We're now married. Nanci Griffith seemed like a delightful and lovely person, but her music has never done much for me. This collection is no different. She tells compelling stories, but her voice (to me) is uninteresting. If you love her music, great! If you hate her music, you probably punch Girl Scouts when they try to sell you cookies. If you think, "This is fine, but I probably won't spend too much time listening," I get you.
Good classic country. Felt cheery
Nice change of pace. Not a usual genre for me but still enjoyed it.
Just normal country.
This is some beautiful country.
Good singer, not bad.
The gentle delicacy of her voice with what I detect to be influences from James Taylor, Joan Baez, and even Stevie Nicks make this more enjoyable than I would usually find this type of country music.
a bit of country music from the 80's with a folkish bend to it. All in all, kind of delightful. Good morning while drinking coffee, accompanied by birdsong.
Always thought of Nancy as Emmylou Harris but twangier and not quite as good. There are other mid-80’s albums of hers I remember better. Still, pretty enjoyable.
What can I say, I really enjoy this one. Maybe my ears are looking for soothing sounds lately, but it's really what I wanted to hear today. The songs are all above average, some being absolutely beautiful. The vocals are great and distinctive. Nice warm and lush instrumentation. Not anything revolutionary, but a small little record that makes you like music again. 1, 2 , 4, 7, 9 , 11 are my favorites. I don't know what to say I'll give it a high 3 (I realized that I'm a bit too generous lately, Carpenters shoud get 3 as well, not a 4).
There’s nowt wrong, in so much that all country sounds the same.
I feel like this was a good get out of bed and start the day album. However, unlikely I revisit anytime soon. 2.8
My big mistake today was queuing this up directly after the new Teseschi Trucks Band album. That album kicks ass. Can’t believe I had never heard that band before. On the other hand, this album was slow and boring. There’s beauty there, but I would have to be in the right mood. 5/10 Decent
Igual piloits
Starts off pretty solid, but overstays its welcome. Starts to sound awfully samey and could really benefit from a little oomph.
Pleasant but a little too country for me.
More country! As always with stuff like this I like lively songs more than slow, sad ones, and songs with interesting stories over love songs. So I didn't love the whole thing, but a couple of them got me thinking. "Banks of the Pontchartrain" was one that stood out; I'm a sucker for a train-riding travel song. Her cousin Libby's going to be standing by the tracks when she arrives, so obviously we're in the country now, since doing that at Penn Station would be a little more complicated. "Love at the Five and Dime" reminds me of when I worked at a Woolworth's in the 70s and the attached luncheonette was going to be shut down by the health department, so everyone on the restaurant staff had to work overtime all night long cleaning it up. My heart goes out to those workers now, though at the time I just thanked the fates that I was in the music department and didn't have to deal with that. And "Looking for the Time (Workin' Girl) had a good attitude - yeah, you leave that working girl alone if you're just going to waste her time, ok? I can see why this is good and has been included in the book, though for me a whole record of it took a bit of patience. I wish there were a couple instrumental songs on here, since it sounded like the backing musicians were really good (Béla Fleck is on banjo!). But it's a vocal album, so I shouldn't complain that there are too many vocals. 3 stars
This is as good as country music gets. Unfortunately not for me but her singing is really nice.
Pretty sweet. Better than most country I’ve heard.
beter dan verwacht, country maar niet super country
Pretty enough, and a far different sound than most of the music on the 1001 albums. Still, largely forgettable, I'm afraid. If you like songs that are beautifully sung in a simple, heart-breaking country style, you should definitely like this. If that doesn't sound like your style, the entire album is just a little over half an hour, so it won't be that much time wasted.
This album was better than expected. Of course, that was hurdling a bit of a low bar. Nothing on here is spectacular. Griffith has a nice voice, pretty. The songs just weren't amazing. Average album.
Pretty voice. Like a Dolly Parton. Little too twangy and country for me, but not hard to listen to. singer songwriting, very classic feeling 3/5
Pretty good
Loin d'être le pire album de country de la liste.
Pretty voice, pretty sounds. Not something I'll seek out again, but was glad to listen to it. 3/5
Maybe if I had been in college in 1987 and I was laying around in a dorm room with my girlfriend at the time who loved this album and we played it over and over and over, I might have more affection for it. As it stands it’s pretty generic singer songwriter stuff for me BUT it certainly ends on a high note with the last three songs being the most distinctive. I’ll revisit them.
3.5
This album is decent but I'm not sure why it was selected for a list like this. Enjoyable listen I guess.
pleasant background music
6/10… country / singer songwriter / *1986
Good ole' country album. It was relaxing and nostalgic (for me, anyway) but nothing to go hooting and hollering about.
Lekkie zawodzenie miejscami. Ten zaśpiew country jest przyjemny, ale w dużo mniejszych dawkach. Na tej płycie było go za dużo. Cała reszta też nie zachwycała. 5.5/10
Enjoyed the steel guitar. Easy listening for background music at work.
Теплое кантри, но не вслушался.
Ok
Probably near the total opposite of music I would normally listen to, a mid 80s country record. It's inoffensive, unless you're a misogynist of some kind. The music is alright, nice pedal steel guitar and some good songwriting. I couldn't tell you anything more about it. Always nice to listen to something completely different every once in a while.
Lurleen lumpkin?
Very solid country tunes from a singer I've never heard of.
Naiskantria, parasta kantria sellainen
A pleasant album. I do like my country albums to be a little more lyrically interesting, and this album is. Even so, the album just strikes me as 'pleasant', but nothing beyond that. It's a solid 3; nothing I dislike, and nothing I'm emphatic about.
A seemingly standard 80’s country album. I don’t know if this made waves at the time of release and it only now sounds like everything else.
I found her voice comforting for a lot of the songs, but it wasn't blowing me away from top to bottom. Worth it to listen to, and may come back some time.
It's decent - nothing special. It IS a nice break from all of the Brit-pop and British electronic music this fucking list has. 2.5, rounded up since country as a genre is so maligned.
Because I'm in my forties, the slow but inevitable shift from indie pop to folk, country and all things acoustic is well on its way. Nevertheless this is the first artist that I've never even heard of (and it's only day seven). Didn't think this would happen so fast! Enjoyable country pop album.
C’était pas désagréable
Don't really have anything to say about this one. Not bad, not that great either. A little cliché perhaps, yet not quite a 2 I think...
Not a country fan, but I enjoyed this album.
I though this was a cute and lovely album, melodic, roadtrips through the countryside kind of vibe.
It’s decent but just kinda all blends together
This was pleasant! Nothing really stood out, but I don't mind a solid country change of pace; especially at 36 minutes.
She’s a lot more country than I thought. In this case, that’s a good thing.
i am a true believer
i can't keep writing reviews that just say "fun!" but... this was fun :) it kind of fluctuates between a 3 and a 4 for me... nothing particularly stood out to me, but it's varied and creative enough that it also doesn't "blend together". do people still call things "bops"
Good voice, good tunes, nice album...I like "Banks of the Pontchartrain" and "More Than a Whisper" (which admittedly I iniitally heard as "more than a whiskey"...), but these kinds of honky tonk albums will always probably max out at 3 stars for me because I find the songs a bit repetitive and the artists indistinguishable, even as I enjoy listening to it. I love simple three chord songs as much as the next guy, but I think there is just so much of this kind of music that it can be hard to separate. I like the music but don't always feel the identity of the artist
Country!
3/5
Really pleasant to listen to, and Nanci has a gorgeous voice. Love At The Five & Dime might now be one of my favourite country songs. My issue is that it kinda meanders into slight repetitiveness. Makes it a fair bit less outstanding. A high 3
Good album, but can't really give it anything higher.
The Woolies on the cover got me excited for what could be another Aussie album, but then I read all of the signage and remembered that Woolworth's was initially the name of an American department store. We Strayans stole the name for our supermarkets just because we could. All of this waffling to say that I have no idea what this album could be. The only reference point I have for 80s, female singer-songwriters is Kate Bush, and I still have no idea what a Kate Bush even is. I'm hedging my bets on punk. Country. Well, that was completely out of left field. An 80s country nomination is hypothetically interesting given that it coincides with the period when nearly every other genre of music was starting to go digital. I can't say this album did anything defiantly analogue, but it succeeds at being a serviceable listen all the same. The vocals are the strongest aspect. In some respects Griffith is a tried-and-true female country vocalist (notably in the smouldering moments of her performances), but in others she comes as a breath of fresh air. The performances here are much livelier than what I traditionally associate with country, with the bits where Griffiths harmonises and adopts that earnest sound being the best of the album. The songwriting is generally pretty strong, too. The hooks are pretty catchy, and her vocals build in a way which is satisfying. The instrumentals are standard fare for country, though to be fair they aren't the focal point of this album and they don't sound tacky or unremarkable to the point of being jarring. Overall, this was a pretty decent listen. One which won't at all stick with me, but I can appreciate a little good, unpretentious fun every now and then. Book time. Revitalised 80s country. A blend between folk and country. Previously a school teacher. The Wikipedia page has fuck all on it. Not gonna lie, it's looking pretty bleak for Griffith right now. The next two or three albums in her discography topped the UK country charts, but that seems to be her biggest achievement on the charts by a mile. She also won a Grammy in 94 and a few other miscellaneous awards, as well as having two tribute albums. Maybe she's a cult act within country music, though I'm not really picking up that energy. Regardless, I can stick my neck out for this album. It was a pretty decent listen all things considered and I've certainly heard worse from this list. I cosign this inclusion.
Not the worst country album and not the best. Nothing too special
meh
This was an easy listen whilst giving platelets
Pleasant but pretty standard country / folk. St Olav's Gate was my favourite at first listen.
3.5
Pretty good. I don't have much else to say!
I didn't know who she was prior to this, so i'm thankful to the Roulette Gods for giving me something new! it's pretty solid, nothing world-shaking, but it gives me a sort of Carole-King-if-more-folk vibe, which is not a bad thing (I fuggin love Carol King). Actually, her sound reminds me of lots of those 70s/early 80s singer-songwriters, which i'm sure is not a coincidence. didn't really dislike any of the tracks, but I wasn't moved by many of them, either. I did like "Banks of the Pontchartrain" a lot.
Pretty standard country music.
Not what I’m used to but I like it
Nothing very major. Average country from the era. Maybe even earlier. Sounds pretty, good background music
top 3 - Love At The Five & Dime, St. Olav’s Gate, The Wing & The Wheel. Another album I enjoyed more than I expected. I’m not big on country music at all but this isn’t bad at all. Maybe a 2.5 but a 3 fits too. Good voice!
Consistent top to bottom. I kinda like a twangy country voice, so I don’t mind this. But there’s not much range in either tempo or vocal range. It’s pleasant, but doesn’t rise above three stars for me.
I wasn't sure what to expect here, as I'm not typically a country listener, but it's really good! Nanci's voice is great, and the backing music does exactly what I needed. Standout tracks for me were "Banks of the Pontchartrain" and "Fly By Night". I might have to come back to this in the future.
Had a few good background songs, but I don’t think I could actually like just listen to the song for the song
I was actually a little shocked but I didn’t hate this album pretty solid with some shorter songs though. I like her voice and the stories are pretty good.
Cieplutko i rustykalnie. Pozytywny vibe, ale nie na każdą okazję.
Nice and relaxing, but I'm not going out of my way to listen to it again. Standout Tracks: Love at the Five and Dime, One of These Days, Fly by Night Score: C-
This is exactly the sort of stuff my dad listens to.
Pleasant listening!!!
Good voice, fine country album.
Thought it would be worse when i saw that it was country 6/10
Not my typical genre but was pleasantly surprised
Country music would never be something I'd proactively reach for, but I found this an enjoyable and easy background listen
A perfectly enjoyable listen but I can't for the life of me work out what makes this record stand out from the many others just like it. It actually sounds like something from ten years earlier so it's hardly a trailblazer either. I like it. I like toast too, but I wouldn't put it on a list of greatest foods ever.
An entirely decent bit of countr / Americana which I enjoyed listening to. Nothing standout about it which does beg the question, why is it on this list? Though I may not have listened to it otherwise? No great loss in that, but I enjoyed it.
I’m a sucker for country folk. Thank god she’s left
Some fine folk pop but not a lot here that was good, just kind of nice
I hear waxajatchee Emmy Lou and Esmeralda Spaulding. Nice, solid album.
Not sure why this has such a low rating. While it is nothing exceptional it is still very listenable with some decent tracks. I have marked a few notable songs and felt the record was well balanced. I could not see myself diving into her current catalogue but i enjoyed the listen. Fly By night was my standout track. It is somewhere between a 3 and a 4. 3.5 stars
Not a genre I like, but this is it done right Pleasant
It can't just be me that thinks this type of music all sounds the same...
A stunningly beautiful voice that matches with introspective and geographic lyrics. Not surprised to see a litany of country-folk-bluegrass legends involved with this project.
Delightful
Pleasant country folk good for Sunday morning listening. In the lineage of Dixie chicks, Brandi Carlisle, etc.
I always appreciate it when this collection serves up semi-decent albums from outside the somewhat narrow rock (music) tunnel it seems to cleave to, and this seems like an OK country-esque entry in that vein. And it's also good to get a female singer-songwriter to help balance the largely male-dominated music in this project, even if she seems to be channeling Dolly Parton pretty strongly rather than a more distinctive voice. The highlights for me were probably "Love at the five and dime" (apparently covered and popularized by Kathy Mattea slightly later), "Banks of the Pontchartrain" and "Fly by night". (I would have been incredibly impressed if "One of these days" and "Fly by night" turned out to be covers of Pink Floyd's or Rush's songs (respectively), but alas, and not at all surprisingly, it's not meant to be.) I was also happy to read and see that she enlisted Lyle Lovett a bit for this album (he's on the album cover and provided harmonies on many tracks), but also more than a bit disappointed to be reminded that Lyle Lovett is one of many very worthy artists who aren't represented in this collection. I don't want to disparage Nanci Griffith in any way, but it's a shame that Lyle Lovett (with or without his Large Band) was excluded.
She has a lovely voice, and this album is better than most of the other country pop of this era.
This is so good. I love the vibe of this album even if no individual tracks stand out to me.
3.5 not my genre, but solid country.
Didn't actively hate it. Would not pick it for myself.
Nice voice but I expected to feel more after I was done listening to it. More than a whisper is a nice song. Could have been my listen.
Hate to call her a liar, but the Bouncing Souls would lead me to believe she was not the last of the true believers.
Ei kriibi kõrva, kuid vajub kergelt taustale. Albumi ühtsust ei oska hinnata, aga mulle tundub, et see on kõik ühte patta ja midagi revolutsioonilist siin ei toimu. 3/5
It sure is pretty country but I don't know enough about to genre to see what makes its a standout or what influence it had
O fuck me, country. Sj bi mi moral že naslov prvega komada povedat vse ("The Last of the True Believers"). Je pa imela dober glas Nanci. No, 36 minut bom pa ja zdržala. "Love at the Five and Dime" je kr lep komad. Začetek naslednjega mi je totaln turn off, musically. Pač, vse kar sledi je country. Glasba mi ni všeč, loh pa cenim, da je bla ženska res dobra pevka. "Fly By Night" mi je kul, bl uptempo. Ta mi je verjetno najljubši komad na albumu. Ne vem, a loh še bl poudarim, da country ni tolk zame, ampak ni bil pa slab album, sploh.
3.36
Though certainly filled with quality vocals and solid instrumentation, it never really managed to leave much of an impression to me outside of 'its pretty good'
Another nice listen, but not too many songs stood out
Nice enough, thought it was Dolly Parton. Wouldn’t listen again
Perfectly decent
tidy country album
Unobjectionable country music, decent instrumentals.
Not something I’m always in the mood for, but great songwriting.
