Album Summary
Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water is the third studio album by American band Limp Bizkit, released on October 17, 2000, by Flip and Interscope Records. Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water received mixed reviews from critics, as Metacritic gave it a 49 out of 100. AllMusic writer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote, "Durst's self-pitying and the monotonous music give away that the band bashed Chocolate Starfish out very quickly – it's the sound of a band determined to deliver a sequel in a finite amount of time." The Rolling Stone Album Guide awarded the album three out of five stars,[31] whereas the magazine itself gave the album a 3.5 out of 5. Even so, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water was listed in the book for 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, but later removed in recent editions of the book.

Immediately after World War 2, the forces of capital begin to dismantle the progress made during the New Deal. Slowly but surely, the power of unions and the protection against corporations begins to erode, all in the name of capital and destroying communism. With much of the social safety net destroyed in the tumultuous 70s and 80s, the 90s begin with the Soviet Union collapsing. This suggests it was all worth it. And we have a cool sax playing Dem in the White House. Surely everything will work out. But it doesn’t. The promise of healthcare never comes. NAFTA kills domestic production. Austerity takes hold. You’ve defeated your enemy and life got worse. If you’re young and coming of age, everybody sucks and everything is fucked. And there’s no one to get mad at, not in the system at least. Angst and anger at a vague other. Limp Bizkit is the distillation of this feeling. It’s anger, a real righteous fury at nothing. It’s at hater and people who push you down, but who are you supposed to be mad at? Your parents? School mates? The system that created the conditions had subsumed any critique. It was the end of history. There was nothing left! This is probably one reason the crass WWF dominated TV. At least there were fights. And at the biggest event, Wrestlemania X7, Limp Bizkit’s My Way is the theme. That’s what Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan fought for. That was American hegemony unopposed. Rock and Stone Cold and Fred Durst. It was stupid and ugly, and it was exactly what the zeitgeist needed and deserved. Then 9/11 happens. Then the housing crisis. Then today. The contradictions collapsed in on themselves. Mainstream culture looked at Limp Bizkit as crass, but never had an outlet for the people who were still pissed. So they found it in MMA, Joe Rogan, Donald Trump. Nu Metal, but particularly Limp Bizkit, was a way for mainstream culture to channel legitimate grievances. And because in America those grievances could never be against capitalism, they had to turn elsewhere. And had to find other ugly stupid things. Anyway. This album is shockingly okay. It’s really dumb and grating but it DOES scratch an itch.
There are some idiots out there who think this album is a five-star banger. I am one of those idiots. 5/5
Limp.
Fred Durst used up all the fucks. If there were any fucks left I’m sure I’d give one about this album, alas.
"Fuck Limp Bizkit, man. 'Ooh, I can put a Z in my name.'" I knew we could count on Ben Stiller.
No
Why is all their choruses things a tough guy would say in the 50s? You’re mouth’s writing checks that your ass can’t catch, it’s my way or the highway, I’m living life in the fast lane. Also, whenever I’ve seen videos of people mocking nu metal and Fred durst I assumed they were doing an over the top voice but that’s just straight up what he sounds like. Fred Durst sounds like a Fred Durst parody on half of this album. The second half gets better but this album is still trash.
One of the albums people love to hate but I enjoyed it. You need to go into it realising that they are not taking themselves seriously.
Some pretty good rock songs in here, was worried about another rap album when I saw the cover and name
It's just so... limp bizkit. Today was both not the day for this but then actually the perfect day for this. It's so over the top in it's own way that it works in a funny way, in a way.
-Tracks longer than 3:59: Yes -Long tracks interesting or special:I honestly don’t know. -Album shorter than 58 minutes: Yes. -Will listen to album again: Nope -Overall: It’s kind of unfair for me to rate this album. This is a genre I really do not like. Maybe it is a great album for this type of music; I genuinely don’t know and can’t tell. I can’t take the lists word for it due to the trash I have heard in genres I do like, I’m just going to give it… 3/5
not bad
I’m so embarrassed to be a human being. I’d like to apologize to all other sentient and non-sentient life forms and also all rocks and stars and basically the entirety of the universe. If whatever eventually wipes out humanity is reading this, that wasn’t particularly cool and I wish you hadn’t done that, but I’m not going to say it was completely unwarranted.
Yea, i liked this. A reminder of a time I was too young to really enjoy.
Is this a joke? I reject this. I reject any attempt at critical reappraisal of Limp Bizkit. I reject Fred Durst. Resist Fred Durst, and he will flee from you.
It’s kind of weird to say Fred Durst ruins Limp Bizkit because they wouldn’t be the same band without him at all but he really does. His lyrics are on the cusp of being decent sometimes but most of the time it’s just really stupid. In “Boiler”, which is otherwise really great, the (repeated!) line “I crawled up your butt somehow/and that’s how shit got turned around”, is just so fucking stupid. Like cmon man. You can do better than this. Complaints about lyrics aside I do ashamedly enjoy this album. The riffs are good, the drumming is tight and consistent, the bass lines are a nice blend of hip hop repetitions and rock grooves, and even the DJ bits fit right in. Wes Borland’s guitar playing beyond the chugga chugga bits is quite good, and, well, the chugga chugga bits go hard. This was music aimed directly at me when it came out and I liked it then. It’s not as good now largely because I’m less angry and stupid but I can still appreciate it. Still can’t fathom how or why Method Man and Ben Stiller got involved in this but that’s just the decade we lived in I guess.
The most Jacksonville thing ever.
Long View Farm in Massachusetts, Hit Factory in New York, Olympic in London, South Beach in Miami.
The ultimate rage album for when you need to get it all out. I wouldn’t say this is masterful music that runs deep, but this is definitely one of my rage therapy albums.
Beyond hilarious this was included on the list Rollin’ is really the only good thing about this album; I burst out laughing at the chorus and it’s a much more pleasant kind of dumb than the rest of this album. The rest of this album is garbage, both from a lyrical and musical standpoint. Fred Durst is not a good singer and the douchiness of his lyrics make him feel like even more of a douchebag. Full Nelson is awful and probably my pick for what exemplifies how much this album sucks. Awful, sloppy instrumentation and really just uniquely gross lyrics that only Butthole Surfers so far has matched. I think this one being included on any permutation of this list is a huge stain against it, and although it was rightfully removed in future editions, how the hell can you listen to this and think “yeah this is an important work of art that everyone needs to listen to”? I know Nu Metal is kind of a joke of a genre but there HAS to be better albums than this if you really wanted to put one on the list. Hopefully I never have to listen to this band ever again
It's just gross and cheap. And oh my god, that outro where they try so hard to seem like ordinary funny guys... you're not.
With a different singer, Limp Bizkit probably could have been cool. Fred Durst has always gone out of his way to get on people’s nerves, and thanks to years of practice, he manages to do that pretty well on “Chocolate Starfish...” too. The combination of the annoying high notes in his voice and his extensive use of the word “fuck” is off-putting right from the first minute. Fortunately, both get much better later on. However, I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. So it seems that Limp Bizkit got a lot of attention thanks to Durst’s annoying manner. In that sense: they did everything right. But they could have been cool instead... Well, now here’s a mediocre rating for an album that wanted to be controversial. Take that!
The album should be shorter. The singles are actually fun, but too much of the album is crass filler for me.
I reviewed Limp Bizkit’s debut recently, thinking I’d never heard them before. Hearing their third album today (sorry, it’s hard to bring myself to write the title out) I realised that this was an album I listened to quite a bit as a child. Or more accurately, listened to bits of repeatedly, as it's a record chock full of skip tracks with a few big highlights. It’s hard to review this with adult ears as it’s music designed for 11-15 year old boys in the 2000s and feels like it was never meant to travel outside of that sphere. Musically it’s not without merit but it’s not a scratch on the debut, mostly because Fred has developed into the most terrible vocalist and lyricist, overwhelming any quality the band brings to the table. Even taking into account the aforementioned teenageriness it’s frequently inexcusably bad. There is no justifying the length of this thing either. There isn’t 74 minutes worth of material here.
Limp Bizkit are getting a high 2 on this one, some of the raps are heinlously bad and there is lots of boring stuff here too but when they decide to just rock out i think they're pretty good at it
Pretty cool
Call me Debbie from the song 1985 because I'm not a big Limp Bizkit fan. Only thing keeping this from one star is the song The One which I actually liked, it is also the least Limp Bizkit like song. Fred Durst actually has a good voice when he is singing instead of rapping. Somewhere in there could have been a decent alt rock band, but then again that would make them not Limp Bizkit. Not as bad as I expected, still pretty bad. ⭐️⭐️
wow this usually would be something i’d dislike but weirdly really fucked with this. metal is so productive for cleaning time
This is pretty damn close to unlistenable. I thought about just turning it off a few times, but it’s also such a mind-boggling atrocity that I decided to stick it out. I actually skipped through their greatest hits album to try to understand what people like about them. They’ve sold millions of albums, so there must be something appealing even if it doesn’t appeal to me, right? I guess more than the music it must be the overall sentiment that “the world sucks and everyone’s always shitting on me but I don’t care because I’m kind of a clown but also kind of bad-ass because I just don’t care, even though I really do care, but whatever, everyone else is stupider and sucks worse than me.” The first thing that has to be said is that the guy fronting this band is the worst. In every way. The lack of talent as a singer/rapper/whatever is absolute. The charisma is non-existent. I don’t think there was one second in listening to this album that I wasn’t experiencing second-hand embarrassment from his cringe-inducing performance. I’m not a huge fan of nu-metal but I think I have a decent feeling for why the music and aesthetic are appealing to some people, but that this band, fronted by this guy, became the voice of nu-metal and got respect and adoration from millions of fans remains a mystery to me. It seems like some sort of cosmic joke.

Ugh
This was….interesting
A couple of these tracks are great hype up music and some are interesting musically. However, that is quickly overshadowed by Durst’s nonsensical and lazy lyricism. I always found it funny that this band and their fans mocked the pop singers of the time while they were mainstays on MTV/TRL. Durst’s lyrical ability was as low effort as those pop songs and his voice/cadence actually reminds me of Aaron Carter. I enjoyed Three Dollar Bill Yall and could see that album being on this list for its contribution to the music scape at the time. I guess this album acts as a time stamp, too, of just how bad this period of pop music was.
Musically it’s not a bad album. Similar in sound to a lot of the nu metal and hard rock albums of this period. The lyrics are absolutely abysmal. Middle school level. I know this was a popular album at the time, but it’s much worse as an example of a genre than many other similar artists of the time. I’m confused by its inclusion on this list.
First half high energy but juvenile. Second half a bit meh!
I just spent 75 minutes awash in a sea of retarded preadolescence, or was it a sea of preadolescent retardedness? I might have found this somewhat enjoyable if I had been a 15 year-old boy, but alas, that ship sailed some time ago. Something’s limp all right, and it’s not their bizkit. Almost no redeeming features here. And my God, this album cover takes the prize for worst so far.

Too long but THROW YOUR HANDS UP
Hasn’t aged well - misogynistic, frat boy crap that got lapped up as some sort of amazing new thing. It was done better by Rage Against the Machine, heck, even Korn were better. And Fred Durst is still to this day, a dick.
It’s not for me but if I was a school shooter I could see how I could really like it
This is a Big Mac of an album. You know that it's trash, you know that it's bad for you, but it's also irresistible.
This album is honest, aggressive, polished, unashamed and, most importantly, entertaining. Banger after banger. The irony of having the late, great Scott Weiland join for a guest performance and that be (by a country mile) the worst song on the album is strange, but one bad track can be forgiven. People hate on Limp Bizkit for shallow reasons. They never claimed to be revolutionaries or geniuses. They make fun, catchy music and have a great time doing it. Good for them.
This take will be extremely specific, but when you're playing Clover Pit, if you have the Diesel Locomotive equipped and it activates, the sound effect fits in at any point during this album
3/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/limp-bizkit/chocolate-starfish-and-the-hot-dog-flavored-water/ Really overstays its welcome by a lot. I cannot deny the start is just pure stupid fun. The hits are just great and undeniable for anyone growing up in the 90s. It's unfortunately mainly Fred Durst that ruins it with his shit lyrics. Instrumentally I can vibe with the echo-y guitars and low bass (see Chat Pile), but the vocals are just always the same. And don't even get me started about the last three songs....
Strong energy, cheeky lyrics and attitude like no other.
Great examples how pretentious so called music critics can be. This album bangs. The last bit was kinda slow, but still I think it's worth a listen.
ay dios My way🤤🤤🤤🤤
I tried. Almost made it through. Honestly not as bad as I thought it would be, but given I didn't think I'd make it past one song that's not saying much. I did actually listen to most of it, but it was an endurance contest. 2/5
Shit sandwich.
Possibly the worst mainstream band of this genre. Heard a couple of these "songs" overplayed back in college and god they're still just as terrible. I think I could maybe listen to them without Fred Durst or any vocals at all.
It may seem strange for Limp Bizkit to be rubbing shoulders in the 1001 with bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, but there's no denying the fact that they were a major part of the zeitgeist (and still perform to giant crowds to this day). Chocolate Starfish finds them at the peak of their rise in popularity, though that doesn't mean it's their best work (that belongs to 3 Dollar Bill Y'all). Their previous album, Significant Other, put Bizkit on the map as the top of the pack in the hot as lava genre of rap metal. Chocolate Starfish is the inevitable arena friendly, sample heavy, and hook laden record intended to take advantage of the influx of fans. Lyrically Fred Durst would never be confused with Shakespeare, but the offerings here are below standard compared to the previous two albums. This adds to the generic product feel of the overall experience, regardless of how much work Wes Borland puts into making the band musically formidable. Overall I'd say Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water is a time capsule of a different time and deserves to be recognized as such, but if you want a better idea of what made Limp Bizkit a juggernaut on MTV and alternative radio, I'd say check out their earlier work.
New metal… one of those that was good for its time, but it’s had a time. Load of nonsense but I do kinda love its punchy drums those guitar riffs, the lyrics are all bollocks but, production and style, yeah I have a soft spot…. Low 3 or high 2 just because everyone was trying to play it at high school
not for me
Lost in the conversation about how bad this album is, is the fact that the track Livin It Up is dedicated to Ben Stiller for some reason. That's a fun fact I hope I never have to bust out. Two stars for nostaligia's sake, since I listened to this a lot when I was 16. But it's bad. Real bad.
SOOOO many F*** words...on every song. I have to pass.
if i say fuck 2 more times thats 46 fucks in this fucked up rhyme 5/10 best song - my way
Why? Why would you make me listen to this? Ok. This is... not good. But it's not as bad as I assumed it would be. It's more embarrassing than anything else. I made it four songs before turning it off.
Intro N/A Hot Dog 2.3 My Generation 2.3 Full Nelson 2.4 My Way 2.5 Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle) 2.7 Livin' It Up 2.2 The One 2.2 Getcha Groove On 2 Take a Look Around 2.4 It'll Be OK 2.2 Boiler 2.1 Hold On 2 Rollin' (Urban Assault Vehicle) 2.2 Outro 1 Score: 2.178571429
this album is definitely a product of its time but also it isn’t as bad as everyone is pretending it is. it also isn’t as good as “significant other”. can an album with a song on the mission: impossible 2 soundtrack really be all that bad?
I'd have lost money if you asked me to bet on whether or not a Limp Bizkit album would ever appear on a list of 1,001 essential albums. Like, a LOT of money... This is certainly a blast from the past. I also would have lost a lot of money on a bet about me intentionally listening to this band ever again. And I also would have lost a bunch of money on the side bet that I'd enjoy it. Pretty fucking surprised all around on this one... I don't WANT to like this. I would feel morally satisfied if I could honestly say "I hate this and it's garbage music for meth heads." Because it is. But I can't say I don't like it. Shit. Give me a well done ribeye with some ketchup, I guess. The only person who knows I'm listening to this right now is me, and I'm running scenarios in my head on how to explain that I'm doing it on purpose if someone were to find out and rightfully rebuke me for my awful musical tastes. I was dreading listening to this, and then I saw it was 75 minutes. But the first song just grabbed me, and the rest never let me go. I'm kinda hyped listening to Rollin', actually. Oof. They should DEFINITELY stay away from ballads though. The One is pretty rough, and Hold On was a miss too, but it might have been alright as a shorter track. I also could have done without the remix of Rollin', but was grateful to hear a DMX verse. I love that guy's flow. Overall, pretty damned enjoyable. I have also heard some TERRIBLE skits on albums in my day, but we definitely have a winner for "Outro" as the worst of the worst. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why artists include this kind of shit on their albums. To be clear, I don't think this album belongs anywhere near this list, but I did enjoy most of it. It was kind of like being really satiated by a couple of McDonald's cheeseburgers and some fries; it's NOT a good burger and it doesn't belong on a list of greatest foods, but it is an enjoyable meal once a year or so. That said, due to my embarrassment, I don't think I'll be adding this to my collection. But it'll still exist on streaming services in a few years if I ever want to listen again. My ratings come from a biased personal enjoyment perspective because I'm not educated enough to be a music critic. ⭐⭐⭐.75
I wish I could give negative ratings. I'd rather listen to nails on a blackboard.
Most are very quick to disregard Limp Bizkit. Yes it’s corny and Durst is a little whiney but the composition and musicianship of their work is great. Drummer John Otto is amazing and the guitarwork is phenomenal. It’s dynamic music, interesting and yes - a big part of how my interest in music was shaped. Amazing stuff
Unapologetic mediocrity
Music for people of low iq and limited vocabulary. Bloody awful in every way and moany as fuck. People glean pleasure from this ?? I played some classical music after this to detox.
Guilty pleasure. Goes insane for no reason.
Over the years I’ve developed a begrudging respect for this band. Their singles are catchy, and they know how to set a vibe. So I went into this with a cautious optimism. So after all that, this fucking sucks
Oh the poetry of the lyrics, oh the beauty of the voice... probably the most hated album on here, I've heard ones that bothered me more, but it's still bad.
I don’t think I can give this one star. It’s the least shit of the 2000 nu metal. It doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously and it made me laugh a couple of times (probably not in the way they intended). Don’t get me wrong. It’s really not good. But it’s far from the worst thing I’ve listened to on the list.
1.5. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Am I not growing or is it bad?
Powerful Crossover Nu-Metal - I don't like them too much but have to admit that this album is solid.
Sehr geiler Sound der einen in die Jugend zurückwirft. Band und Sänger ja mehr als umstritten mittlerweile
teilweise paar gute Beats und Take a Look around ist cool.
Better than any metal I’ve listened to on here.
- 2.5 starts because he was mean to his kid in "I Saw the TV Glow" 2.5/5
1.8/5
I don’t like nu metal. (He waits for the screams and jeers to die down) it’s music for dirtbag cousins, sketchy weed dealers, and people who wrestle in the backyard. Unlike our good and noble indie rock, pop punk, and midwestern emo. I kid of course, but this album just sounds like it’s minutes away from calling me a slur. It’s loud, confusing, angry, and emotional. So it’s the perfect album for Limp, just not for me
Bro who hurt you. And why are you barking
Held up much better than I thought it would. I thought that at over an hour it would overstay its welcome but it stayed pretty fresh. Or maybe I just have a soft spot for NuMetal
The instrumental bits were really good, decent guitar and drumming, then the vocal, bloody awful, the style, bloody awful. Had to hurry the tracks along in places. Lyrics were shit. Not quite Paul McCartney bad but nearly.
I enjoy the nu-metal sound. Duh-nuh, duh-nuh-nuh guitar does make it fun and headboppy. But this is childish. The lyrics are embarrassing, ooh I'm so hard and edgy fuck all y'all. I'd be ashamed to admit I enjoyed it. I did, but I was 13 at the time, it's a throwback. If it wasn't so puerile, I've no doubt I'd give it a 5. I'm hanging my head in shame. As for its inclusion on the 1001, it's not what I'd pick nor recommend to anyone who wasn't a teenager at the time - and they probably already heard it. Other bands at the time were better.
This…is not good but it did take me back to a specific music moment in time. Rollin still kind of slaps but overall it’s so similar throughout, kind of drones on, is WAY too long, and just has no staying power in terms of what it brought to music.
Overproduced, but overproduced well in some parts. And also it’s bad.
It's easy to write this off as early 2000s trash, and look, some of it is. But it is also of its time, and Limp Bizkit were huge for a moment in that moment. The music hasn't actually aged as much as I thought it would. It went pretty hard, and, it seems like they didn't take themselves too seriously, unlike some of their contemporaries. High 2s.
Its not an album before it's time, it's an album of it's time. Hip-hop and metal have been intertwined since Run DMC and Aerosmith worked together last century. Counter-culture meets counter-culture. I think there is a very jaded argument to make regarding record execs not really knowing what the kids like about this nu metal garbage and a lot of it being funded because it was what was popular at the time. That said, these lyrics are speaking to suburban teenage male angst. Young men abandoned by their parents and left to figure out their own feelings. Enter Fred Durst and his extremely accessible (simple) lyrics about being pissed about the world but having no real outlet other than music. The outro on this album goes to show that Limp Bizkit was in the joke and had a good sense of humor about this. History will vindicate Limp Bizkit.
This album has not aged well.
Better than expected
This is quintessential nu-metal, but some tracks sound too same, and it is too long
you're not good enough to reference NIN on the first track without me getting pissed that I'm not listening to them instead of this garbage
Garbage. The songs are actually even worse than the hideous cover and idiotic title. Formulaic tedious dreck.
75 minutes was a slog, though to be fair, not as miserable as I thought it would be. I can see how angsty teens might have gravitated to this—it has huge riffs and huge feelings.
This album was extremely popular when I was young and these songs were frequently played on the radio. Although it doesn't have the same impact now that it did back in the day I still enjoy it. Not just for nostalgic reasons but because it really rocks and has some nice variety. I saw them live at the Family Values Tour and it was a great show. The guitarist was wearing a squirrel (or some other furry animal) suit and jumped the whole time. It was an impressive display of physical fitness.
Found myself tapping my toes once or twice throughout this TOO LONG album but that could not outweigh the terrible music, the terrible man, and the final track of him just laughing, which irked and icked out every nerve in my body.
It was pretty fun and I did enjoy the album. The hits didn't really ring any bells for me, despite being really popular. The album art was terrible. Low 4.
Really hilarious, can someone understand what I mean
Oh dear. As well as the usual embarrassing spectacle of white people rapping, this album features an overload of puerile swearing, as if Beavis and Butthead decided to copy the Beastie Boys with a side order of Nine Inch Nails. They even tried to get Rick Rubin to produce this, but he lasted a week before sensibly quitting. The end result is simply tiresome, with mother-effin this and sniggering references to rude bits of anatomy-that. Even Apple Music thought that the name of this album was beyond the pale and asterisked it out. After listening to a couple of tracks, I looked up Fred Durst’s Wikipedia bio and it confirmed that he is, indeed, a massive arsehole who supports Vladimir Putin. Yikes. I prefer my biscuits crunchy.
Listening to this in public as an adult felt as illicit as having a butt plug in me
I don’t seem to dislike Limp Bizkit like the majority of the people on this list - though whilst I do find him a little annoying, especially after my friends love to spam Limp Bizkit quotes around, the music is like… actually alright. Maybe I’ve listened to more Nu Metal then most huh
First, wtf is that album cover it really sucks, if I was giving a rating on the album cover it would be a one. Also, that outro song sucks so badly I’m going to throw something because it’s so bad and repetitive. For the rest of the album, it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be compared to how the perception is on this list. Like, I wouldn’t call it amazing but I can see the appeal of this. Maybe I’m just in a positive mood but his vocals aren’t terrible and the same with the guitar riffs. Sure, the album is a bit long but I’ve had a lot worse on this list.
esse é foda
