Bjork meets… Cabaret? Still better than yesterday’s Rolling Stones album.
It’s funny how few albums stand out on a list this long — I’m about halfway through and am continually baffled that so many picks feel generic and samey. This, however, is not one of them. This is an odd album and I doubt I’ll ever listen to it again so I’m giving it a 3. But it’s so blessedly DIFFERENT to most of the stuff on this list that it’s more like a 3.5. It’s probably one of the few albums on this challenge I’ll remember. Even if it’s not my personal taste in music.
Ren fest vibes 👸🏻
Got this album on Mother’s Day and the layered dissonance intertwined with haunting melodies accurately sums up my feelings about Mother’s Day.
Perfect background music for cleaning the shit outta my kitchen. 🧹
Huh, maybe I *do* like electronica?? 🤔
I’m a sucker for Bittersweet Symphony, which made me unprepared for how average/samey the rest of this album was. 😕
Boy people love hating on Taylor Swift, huh? 😂 As neither a fan nor her target demographic, this album caught me. Yes the songs all have a similar flavor, but her lyrics’ rich storytelling kept me engaged the entire album. Lovely.
Really dug this one. It was 4 stars till the last song. 😬
I’ve never listened to a full Sonic Youth album but I dug it. The album itself was ⭐️⭐️⭐️ but I added a nostalgia star cause I vividly remember my high school crush skateboarding in his Sonic Youth T-shirt. Yum.
I was braced for more samey Brit pop but was pleasantly surprised by this all-over-the-place (and sometimes hilarious) album. 3.5 ⭐️ rounded up to help offset the grouchy haters.
Really enjoyed this and I am not a Bruce Springsteen fan. (Although it sounded nothing like Bruce Springsteen so that follows)
No one was more surprised than me to find out I didn’t hate this.
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would, except for Frankie Teardrop which had to skip. 😬
I’m someone who enjoys stripped-down folk music and I did enjoy this. But I’m unclear what sets this album apart from any other stripped-down folk album enough to include on this list.
Too weird to listen to on its own but he perfect amount of weird to listen to while working on art projects. 🎨
Lord yes, more of this. 🎸
Absolutely not.
If this had been the first Bob Dylan album I’d ever heard, I might actually like Bob Dylan! Deducted a star for his atrocious singing voice. HOW DID HE BECOME SO FAMOUS.
Kept waiting for this to get good cause it’s Peter Gabriel buuuuut 🤷🏻♀️. The painful stretch between Solsbury Hill and Here Comes The Flood was way too long.
This album was so good that I questioned A) whether I actually do hate Bob Dylan and B) whyyyy are there so many mediocre Bob Dylan albums on this list?? This plus Hwy 61 would’ve been the perfect one two punch.
I like The Who but damned if I can figure out what makes this particular album a standout.
Somehow enjoyable and forgettable at the same time.
So weird. Genuinely don’t understand why I liked this so much.
Irrepressibly bonkers 🙌🏼🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of my favorite things about this 1001 albums project is getting a legendary album I’ve never listened to that stands so clearly head & shoulders above the rest of this list. Like whoa, I see why this one blew the entire music industry away as well as the average listener!! This is not one of those albums. 🤣 Maybe I don’t “get” The Eagles or something, I don’t know. They feel like the blandest possible blend of country + rock, somehow *losing* the standout qualities of both genres. Other than the title track, the songs are boring and samey. Though I did think Last Resort was a pretty song.
I did not need to listen to this before I die. The album in and of itself isn’t bad per se, but why is this on the list when there are already so many un- and underrepresented artists and genres?? Mystified.
DNF
I’ve heard a lot of weird albums during this project but this is the only one that made me laugh out loud.
So weird.
