Jimi Hendrix
3/5
jimi is cool and talented but these songs don't do anything for me. the hits are the hits but I don't think anything of the album tracks
Elvis Presley
3/5
it is an elvis presley album. he is talented but i don't really care for it
Beck
3/5
this is a cool beck album. not as weird as i wanted it to be but i think it's quite nice anyways
Lou Reed
4/5
just one of those endlessly relistenable albums. i think i would eventually upgrade this to a perfect score but right now it's just one of those albums that's packed full of great tunes
Leonard Cohen
4/5
goated stuff
Pearl Jam
5/5
this is a goated one from me from my teenage years. i think it's closer to a 9 than a 10 if i'm speaking objectively but i love this album full heartedly so
The Electric Prunes
3/5
it's alright. i think there are interesting parts on it but i wouldn't really think of this as mindblowing or standout music from the early rock period
Caetano Veloso
3/5
i'm sure it's good if you're more familiar with brazilian/tropicalia music but without a reference point, it's kinda just okay
Stevie Wonder
3/5
these songs don't really take me places, but goddamn those basslines
Kings of Leon
3/5
it's mid
Jeff Buckley
4/5
something haunting and quite beautiful about it
The Smiths
3/5
obv the weakest smiths album but that's still pretty good
Mercury Rev
4/5
definitely in the relisten pile. it doesn't obviously grab me from the start but i think that it's one of those albums that will grow on you. very spacey and cool
Various Artists
3/5
thank you phil spector for the christmas gift. no thank you to murdering that person
DJ Shadow
5/5
sounds insanely cool
The Doors
3/5
i tend to be put off by the doors but this album was alright
Aretha Franklin
4/5
i dont think i connect to this album at all, not my sort of music, but you really can't deny how great it is. absolutely flawless
Parliament
4/5
is it greedy to want more funk from the "we want the funk" album?
Beatles
4/5
i have a hard time getting into the beatles but this album has the best songs of all the ones i have heard
The Jam
3/5
this has the early feel of an album that sticks in your head and eventually you come round to realize its brilliance
Buzzcocks
3/5
pretty straightforward punk, no complaints here
Ryan Adams
1/5
i don’t think i was ever going to give this a truly fair listen as a phoebe bridgers fan, but i was willing to at least give him a chance and holy shit this was the most annoying album i’ve listened to. it’s an old joke but it really does sound like starbuckscore. i think that all the criticism directed towards male singer songwriter for being vain crybabies can be forwarded to ryan adams.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
it's nice with it, what more can you say
U2
4/5
songs so good that you forget bono is a twat
The Beach Boys
4/5
Willie Nelson
4/5
i didnt know these songs were covers because i've never heard the originals but they're definitely willie's songs to me now
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2/5
presumably before they released the album, they sat down and heard that it was maps (truly amazing song, one of the best in the genre) and then 10 of the most garbage my-first-punk-song ass tracks of all time and said "yeah, let's drop this one"
The Lemonheads
3/5
this sounded like the in-between of dino jr and emo which i both enjoy but it never really grabbed me like those two do
Nirvana
5/5
i mean cmon
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
was always west coast but i'm mature now and have put long dead (no pun intented) rap beefs behind me. i still don't care for this album. yes, biggie is talented and it carries such an aura that you have to respect, but there's so much fat to be cut (pun intended) and i have a hard time finding standout songs that aren't the hits. the skits sucked too
Duran Duran
3/5
i'm usually a slut for 80s pop but this is unfortunately just pretty mid to me. not annoying, not bad, but not great. solidly mid
Pulp
3/5
plenty of good songs but no great ones
Van Halen
3/5

Weather Report
3/5
fun stuff
The War On Drugs
3/5
a little bob dylan, a little bruce springsteen, honestly not good enough to be either, but hard to fuck up when you’re primarily drawing from two influences like that
Beyoncé
4/5
reading all the reviews and they remind me of youtube comments a 13 year old who's really into nirvana might leave, but some of them are written by people in their 30s. the album is good
SZA
4/5

Sebadoh
2/5
lou really needs j mascis unfortunately
The Pretty Things
3/5
i think i burned myself out on all the bad psychadelic rock in this book/series that i was elated at first listen because this album doesn't suck, but on second listen i came back down to earth

Girls Against Boys
3/5
really hated the guy's voice. otherwise great album
Dire Straits
4/5
it's pretty cool. not much else to say

Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
damn thisbis good as fuck
Amy Winehouse
2/5
really an album i wanted to be over quickly
LL Cool J
2/5
i think the problem with a lot of early hip hop is that the genre advanced so fast and moved in such different directions that even five years between albums feels like the difference between the bronze age and the space age. so with that in mind, early stuff just sounds ancient and way behind everything else. however this doesn't even sound good compared to other albums released in 1990. how is this a classic when it sounds like ass compared to like straight outta compton which was released a full year earlier
Snoop Dogg
3/5
funky as hell but the rap aint nothing to write home about

Solomon Burke

Deep Purple
3/5

Neil Young
3/5
i wish i could fulfill my patriotic duty and find the neil young album that makes him the undisputed goat of canadian music
Dagmar Krause
3/5
i think you can break down the 1001 albums like this
- obvious classics that would be weird if they weren't on the list
- influential but not big albums
- significant artists' entire discographies
- small samplings of significant genres/subgenres
- genuine oddball/left field shit that you would never possibly stumble across no matter how hard you tried
this album is obviously in the final category, and one of only three or four on this list that falls into that category. through reading other people's reviews, i find a lot of people who really thought this list was only going to be things that fell into the first category and turn their nose up whenever they get outside of that comfort zone. i think it kind of defeats the whole purpose of this exercise, why bother committing yourself to listen to 1001+ albums if you're just expecting to find more of things you already know and like
all this to say that this music is like a 7/10 for me. not my bag, not the best thing i ever heard, but not bad at all. however i would take it over the inexplicable 300 byrds or neil young albums on this list
The Velvet Underground
4/5
insanely damn good
Animal Collective
4/5
FOUR WALLS AND ADOBE SLATS FOR MY GIRLS
3/5
