Album Summary
25 is the third studio album by English singer-songwriter Adele, released on 20 November 2015 by XL Recordings and Columbia Records. The album is titled as a reflection of her life and frame of mind at 25 years old and is termed a "make-up record". Its lyrical content features themes of Adele "yearning for her old self, her nostalgia", and "melancholia about the passage of time" according to an interview with the singer by Rolling Stone, as well as themes of motherhood and regret. In contrast to Adele's previous works, the production of 25 incorporated the use of electronic elements and creative rhythmic patterns, with elements of 1980s R&B and organs. Like when recording 21 (2011), Adele worked with producer and songwriter Paul Epworth and Ryan Tedder, along with new collaborations with Max Martin and Shellback, Greg Kurstin, Danger Mouse, the Smeezingtons, Samuel Dixon, and Tobias Jesso Jr. 25 received generally positive reviews from music critics, who commended its production and Adele's vocal performance although some were critical of its formulaic nature and Adele's lack of taking risk. Issued nearly five years after the release of her second album, the internationally successful 21, the album was widely anticipated and Adele's record labels promoted the album with an extensive marketing campaign. 25 became a massive commercial success, debuting at number one in 32 countries and breaking first-week sales records in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom and United States. In the US, the album sold over 3.38 million copies in its first week of sales, marking the largest single-week sales for an album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. 25 was the world's best-selling album of the year for 2015, with 17.4 million copies sold within the year, and has gone on to sell over 22 million copies worldwide, making it the fourth-best selling album of the 21st century, the second-best selling album of the 2010s (behind 21), and one of the best-selling albums of all-time. Following 21, it was certified Diamond by the RIAA, making Adele the only artist of the 2010s to achieve this certification with two albums. Four singles were released to promote the album, with "Hello" becoming an international number one song and the fastest selling digital single in the US, with over a million copies sold within a week of its release, "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" charted within the top 10 and "When We Were Young" and "Water Under the Bridge" charted within the top 20 across Europe and North America. Credited for impacting the music industry by encouraging a renewed interest in buying physical releases rather than downloading or streaming and much like 21, for saving the dwindling sales of the global music industry, 25 won the 2016 Brit Award for British Album of the Year, and the 2017 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. To promote the album, Adele embarked on her third worldwide concert tour, Adele Live 2016. It started on 29 February 2016 and ended on 30 June 2017. The concert broke numerous attendance records across the globe and grossed $167.7 million.

Her voice sweeps you along, but I don't think the songs are as consistent as on 21.
The histrionic torrent of “River Lea” delights me, as I used to live right next to the navigation, cycled it often, and I feel I know what she means! Sadly, none of the other songs touch me in an analogous way, leaving me with: “And now I wanna be your dog” “And now I wanna be your dog” “And now I wanna be your dog”
Man, that voice grates quickly, eh? 4 years and one star better than the other one, mainly for the Lionel Richie cover.
Apparently I love Adele
Expected to hate it. Did not
She's a great singer, but I feel that the album dragged on with too little emotional variation in songs. Not my vibe usually.
She's got a helluva voice.
Doesn't reach the highs of 21 but still a decent enough listen
Oh look, an absolutely amazing singer with an absolutely depressing eternal break-up album. I don't mind break-up songs, or songs about doomed/past relationships, but for an entire album is stretching the limits of my patience. And that sucks, because I do think Adele's songwriting and vocal chops are incredible. For as good as "Hello" is, I think Leo Moracchioli did it better (IYKYK). I'm happy she's found her niche in the industry that lets her make money, but I will happily go back to only listening to her when she's on a radio I don't control.
i like some of the adele songs, but i have a hard time taking her seriously.
Great
Adele is ultra competent within the domain of making ballads that I don't find particularly interesting. She spends this whole album singing her ass off on songs that I would largely describe as "fine", if pressed. Note that I said "fine" and not "bad", this isn't a bad album, it just has very little it can offer me. Although if you enjoy ballads and melodrama, and can only listen to music sung by people who know how to sing, I certainly do recommend this.
I was surprised that I recognized the first song. Didn’t think I was familiar with Adele’s music, although I’m vaguely aware of her. Considered purely as music this is… OK, I guess? As art, it’s basically nothing. There’s nothing enjoyable about this music, nothing touching or cathartic, there’s no sense of an artist attempting to communicate or express something, not even the joy or satisfaction a craftsperson might experience practicing their craft, having fun or succeeding in creating something, just some songs that are made from words, melodies chords, rhythms, etc. There’s not a single note, a single word, a single articulation that is fresh or new or unexpected. I’m fully aware of how shitty this sounds but I truly don’t believe this is worthy of any more of my time.
5, type of album you cry to
Melancholic yet empowering
She has a great voice, but the songs are so bland. There's one that sounds like The Knife though, so there's probably an extra half point for that.
A bit like 21 but with fewer hits.
I enjoyed this a tad bit more than 21. Still don't find her music to be all that exciting, but there are more melodies here that prick up my ears.
Maldita CABRA. Increible. 10/10
Not as good as 21, still a good pop album
A nice reminder of how many massive hits Adele has, for good reason. I never knew what the hell she was singing during the chorus of "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)", now I hear it, that song rocks. "Sweetest Devotion" was also a nice change of pace finisher.
I’m not listening to ubiquitous pop music staples. I’ve heard some of this. It’s not appealing or interesting to me.
I’m still amazed every time I hear Adele’s vocals. So much depth. I’d never listened to this album end to end and I appreciated the cohesiveness of the tracks, although it felt heavy in the piano ballads.
Phenomenal voice. Songwriting leaves a bit to be desired, and the slower pared-back ballads really suck the momentum out of this.
pick: Water Under the Bridge
Great voice, boring album.
I like Adele's music, and this a solid pop album that was made at a more mature point in Adele's life, and yet somehow, with the exception of songs like "Million Years Ago", it doesn't seem as ambitious or sophisticated as her debut album. It lacks the risks that made her first album so refreshing. And since it doesn't really move her creative bar very far forward, I'm not entirely convinced that this is an essential album to listen to in the way that her debut album 21 absolutely is.
Adele has the most astonishing delivery, carrying this album, with its minimalist arrangements, in its entirety. So it's a shame the subject matter and melodies aren't more evocative or interesting: two great tracks and then it absolutely falls off a cliff.
If I picked up the phone and the first thing I heard was the opening song of this album, I'd hang up immediately.
I dopiero ta płyta mnie przekonała do Adele, bo wcześniej byłam jej naczelną hejterką.
What a waste of a voice of a generation
Hello
Luv Adele
I know she was really popular, but I can't listen to this.
This sounds like a woman having a midlife crisis at 25
An incredible talent but this album is bland and seriously lacks the songwriting of previous albums.
Banger
Gorgeous and enticing, a real collection of beautiful songs
5/10
She’s got some pipes
A couple solid works of art in this album. Very strong voice, that maybe gets a little old over an entire albums worth. But girl, what is with all the angst and single subject matter that's been covered a billion times before. Like you're only 25, you should be out catching stray dick not crying about every relationship you've ever had.
Talented vocalist with awful ballads. Consistently boring.
Bra album, flink artist.
The first few songs were fine but after a little bit of listening I got very fed up of Adele. So not my favorites
I am not looking forward to this, everything i have previously heard has been tedious and forgettable.. Horrible corporate pop for dinner parties you really didnt wa t to go to......never trust and Adele fans judgement they're the sort of.peole that think american sitcoms funny. Track 1. Nope Track 2, quite catchy but smacks of the ginger fencesitter Track 3. Tedious Track 4. Forgetable Track 5. Piano sounds expensive Track 6, rinse and repeat Track 7, Do I really have to finish this? Track 8. Hard drugs seem.like a really good idea, Adele should take them, lots and lots of them. Track 9. Losing the will to live Track 9. This song is no different to any of the others. Kill me now Track 10. Is it over yet?... Track 11. Thank fuck I made it to the end Utterly terrible, this gives music a bad name. If it was an ECG it would be a flat line. Nothing of interest here.......one star for effort...I hope to.never hear her (singing) voice again. This record is playing on a loop in hell
What can I say? Adele is a genius. A genius for managing to sell millions of records by recording pretty much the same song again and again and again. Honestly, listening to this album was like being in Groundhog Day. The only song of any interest was the second one because it wasn’t another bloody ballad. This was the musical equivalent of having mashed potato for dinner every night of the week. I ummed and ahhhed over whether this should be a 1 or 2 but then when comparing to my last outing, the Godforsaken The Holy Bible, it actually was marginally superior. Therefore this gets a generous 2 from me
She had me at "Hello", though strictly speaking she had me hoping a piano would fall from the sky on to my head and put me out of my misery. I don't like syrupy heartfelt ballads and I really didn't want to listen to an album of them. I'll be honest, there was more variety than I was expecting, Send My Love had an almost post rock undercurrent going on, and was that almost a bit of psychogeography going on in River Lea (or just a rubbish metaphor)? I guess the moments of respite from ballad hell just reinforced how much i hated the album. Can she sing? Sure she can, but so can every light entertainer on a cruise ship endlessly banging out her songs. God I hope she hasn't got more than 1 album in this list.
incredible album
Probably her second best behind 21. Send My Love is the standout track for me. 3.6/5.
2.5 stars I remember very well when “Hello” came out. Social media was full of posts of people crying listening to it. The song was larger than life. The album could not live up to the hype that that song made. It continues on well with “Send My Love,” which I remember feeling like a different vibe for Adele. I listened to this album a lot when it came out because my wife was a big fan of it and it was not a hard listen. But after almost a decade without hearing it and coming back to the album tracks, a lot of it is pretty generic and forgettable. Adele makes it listenable, but it’s not anything you have to hear before you die.
Kind of a weird pick for this list. It’s a typical “pretty good follow up to a classic” record. Hello is an absolute monster though — love that song!
Bad B
I slept on this album after being absolutely press ganged by Hello. Adele is a vibe, she is a powerhouse, she will find you and she will belt out her song into your soul whether you like it or not. Godspeed to all who listen to this album, every arrangement is designed to showcase the vocal range and depth of this queen even if they are only minor keys.
I think I like this better than 21 but also.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. A talented voice at the service of insipid ballads. No thanks.
I love Adele's voice, but this album isn't doing a lot for me. 21 was a pleasant surprise to me. It has a few incredible songs that work well with her voice. There's nothing like that on 25. Well, Hello comes close but isn't quite there. This album seems like a complete waste of her talent. Too many boring, generic songs that all sound the same. I'll give it a 3 just for Adele's singing.
Music for ugly cryers and Christina.... What a shitty day to have ears.
Pretty striking in parts.
No thanks
Less impressed by 25 as I was with 21 but its a pretty small margin. We start off about as strong as can br with hello. There is a reason the song is still constantly on and memed on. It works well as a lovesick anthem. Looking back on better times and wishing they were still here. We were young is another popular track but its one that I didn't ever really get into. Its fine enough just there are better tracks here. I dont see why its one of the popular ones. Now water under the bridge is much more emy speed. Its just a good one. And ill throw remedy in too later on. But anyway its still Adele. She still had a killer voice and writing style. Im just left wanted a bit more. Not much more but some. I still very much liked this just 21 is more gor me. She still kills it anyway
This is my second Adele album on this list. Similar to ‘20, I think the big singles are pretty strong, but the deep cuts didn’t really do anything for me. Also I feel like a lot of the songs repeat the choruses until you’re like ‘OK, I got it’ by the end.
An undeniably great voice, but also fairly dull songs on this album.
Great voice but I can't stand the songs.
A magnificent singer hampered by mediocre songs.
Duller than expected.
No me gustó ninguna de las canciones.
She's a great vocalist but these songs oscillate between forgettable and terrible. "You look like a movie, you sound like a song." Compelling stuff.
Adele again... she has a great voice, but all her songs sound exactly the same! And they're way too epic—it's like listening to them makes me feel like I have to go off to a great battle.
Some 4 stars moments in there, but don't know that I'm coming back to it
Had goosebumps 11 years ago when I first heard “Hello” and still get goosebumps now. Adele is a Goddess incarnate, that’s all I can tell you. There was no chance this album was ever going to be anything other than a 5 for me. Love her.
Good album, but “21” is much stronger
Obviously very poppy. But the voice is just something else. Really enjoyed listening to this!
Adele's voice is unapologetically beautiful and strong, so much so that I don't even mind how basic the background music is. The album gave me bouts of nostalgia from billboard hits when I was younger, I really enjoyed it. While not my preferred gerne of music, giving anything less than a 4 would be a disservice to how amazing this entire album is.
I mean, it's adele, like, come on. would give it a 4.5 if i could
This one is just not for me. I can hear how moving it is, but it didn't move me. I think I'm in the "broken hearts are for assholes" camp
Some nostalgic bangers of here. When we were young and send me love being the two best in my opinion. You can’t really overrate Adele as a singer, but I do think the songs get more boring as the album goes on. Still very solid
There's apparently an appetite for this kind of full-chested sad-sack phenom-vocalist stuff with this kind of full but minimal production. Kinda loungey but borrowing from EDM sensibilities. The voice fills an empty room while a piano or something plays single notes and lets them hang as the vocalist lets vibrato or some throatiness extend the note just so. Everyone is in control. It is clean and full and bright even if it is in a minor note. I fuckin' hate it. Adele can very obviously sing, but all these songs feel like a musical prison. Do something fun! Do something big that doesn't just sound big! Instead it feels disposable and pro-forma for wine moms with abandoned dreams and post-college grads overacting their heartbreaks. Which of course there's a place for, just not this list. I was gonna give it a 2, because it's inoffensive and well-sung, but actually I think I'm mad about it. Mad on the internet about the wasted opportunity here and how vacuous it is instead.
Brilliant
I was all set to give this a 4 but Sweetest Devotion pushed it up to a 5. Some of these songs were so over saturated in clutter when they came out that I wasn't sure if they'd still have any power. I was wrong. Water Under the Bridge and River Lea were the standouts but Love In The Dark was close behind. I was surprised Million Years Ago wasn't a cover of an older song, and I mean that as a compliment. This album came out the year my marriage fell apart and a lot of these songs felt like the conversations about the end of a relationship that I wish we could have had.
I don't think anyone can truly hate on Adele. If you do, you might have a problem. That being said, just because she can sing a tune doesn't mean the album hits as a whole. As mentioned in my 1989 review, this was one of the last albums to cause a stir in physical sales. I have great memory of when Hello was the biggest song in the world and you couldn't go anywhere without hearing those first few piano chords. The other singles (Send My Love To Your New Lover, When We Were Young) made waves as well with the latter being maybe her best song or at least tied with Someone Like You. Besides that, I don't find much reason to return to it though I understand why the public went insane for it in 2015. With Taylor, it was like I had a personal relationship with every song of that era - Adele only had me at Hello. So the other songs, ranging from great to OK, leave some sort of fading impression. I remember it now, it was cool but I know I'm gonna forget about it in a week. At the end of the day, Adele has the ability to turn a seemingly mundane piano ballad to the most beautiful thing ever. Then she'd probably drop three f bombs without thinking about it (7/10, 3/5 on this scale)
Great songs, bit dull as an album
I mean, it's alright.
Adull.
This is clearly stronger a stronger album than 21, so I should give it at least the same score. That being said, it came in the same week as 21 and I didn’t love having to listen to both in one week, which probably means they don’t deserve 4 stars to begin with.
Wow, what a fantastic voice. Excellent range and she’s very effective in making you can feel the words. 4.1/5.0
Adele vocals - :) Adele music - :( Some good hits but can leave the album as a whole. highs - When We Were You & Remedy lows - I Miss You, Water Under the Bridge, River Lea, & Sweetest Devotion
Adele throws all of the charm and excitement of 21 out the window, and replaces it with safe, generic pop songs to be forced onto the radio for the rest of eternity. Hello is insufferable, Send My Love sounds like a commercial jingle, and the album completely flatlines from there. Proof that a great voice doesn’t automatically mean good music.
The most anticipated album of the decade, after the runaway success of its (far superior) predecessor, 21. It moved into the realms of polished power ballads as befitting her increasingly diva like image - which to me never really fitted her original singer songwriter persona - and her marriage, child and newfound superstardom didn't rest with the 'I'm still regretful' lyrical themes. It's the 3rd biggest selling album of the 21st century and, to my ears, this is more down to hype and build up than raw song quality as in the previous record. Its tour broke records, although failed to be filmed and recorded on the final nights as she didn't protect her voice properly. I guess it's in the list due to sales........I recall it being underwhelming when I first heard it 11 years ago.
Good
My second Adele album in a bit more than a month. From 21 to 25 so I get them in chronological order which is a good circumstance. On "25" Adele was logically 4 years older dan her previous mega bestseller. She still has a great voice and likes to present herself to the world as a changed person. The musical production and arrangement seems flawless and has enough variation in the Pop/Soul idiom to stay more or less interesting. Maybe it is too perfect as I tend to lose my attention and interest while listening to the album, or the variation is not as big I just said ;). I have also very difficulty watching the front cover art. Not sure what she wanted to say with this look. Her eyes seem to watch right through you and am expecting a laserbeam coming out of them at any moment which is almost frightening. But her mouth looks a bit surprised or wondering. Guess that was the state she was in at that moment or what she wanted to show the world at least. I guess the next album 30 is also in the list, I hope it takes a bit longer before that one drops with me....
8/10 Best songs: Hello, I Miss You, Water Under the Bridge, River Lea Considering how absolutely ubiquitous Adele's songs, it's a little surprising that I've only listened to one of her albums before (and it wasn't this one). Shocking absolutely no one, this album is exactly as moody and atmospheric as you'd expect. I find some songs incredibly strong (generally the ones that do something interesting musically) and the rest incredibly dull (the straight ballads). I'd love to give this album 5 stars, but those boring songs just weigh it down too much.
