ok adele time. this will be my second full album from her god this song was everywhere back when it released. it was to the point i started getting a bit sick of it unfortunately. no denying that its a great song however. that woman knows how to belt with ease oh damn i lowkey forgot about this song. she really is pretty much unrivaled in this era. her and bruno mars you can just expect 3-5 mega hits every album very dramatic song. i really like what the drums are doing in this song. really help elevate her voice (as if it needs any elevating) its crazy how adele is able turn these deeply emotional power ballads into such big hits. that being said, this might be my favorite of her hits. her voice just carries so much emotion no shade intended. but sometimes i need a little bit of a break from the piano. its hard to dismiss it tho when her voice is so grand kinda forgot about this one too. im telling you shes such a sneaky superstar. you dont often think about how many hits she has, probably bc she puts out her music then just puts her head down for a few years until her next album this is the kind of pop soul im not the biggest fan of... oh man this song just hits in a different way. maybe her best hook, she just puts her whole heart into that chorus and it sinks deep into you not piano, but has the same effect as i mentioned before of just being a bit too much of this song. i find it hard to meaningfully criticize adele songs because her singing is obviously the main focus, but i often find it can be a bit too much of the focus that it can feel like theres just not enough going on to keep me coming back the way she can pour her heart and soul out onto every single song is second to none. its really no wonder she'll take like 5 years between albums i wish there were a couple more of these songs on the album. not because i think theyre the best, but they just help break up the sound a bit. i think she is at her best when shes on stripped back production, but piano ballad after piano ballad does get taxing after awhile adeles music isnt the kind that i often find myself revisiting, but its impossible to deny her talent. even though im not listening to this kind of music in my day to day, i still enjoy hearing her music every once in awhile. its hard not to feel something while listening to some of these songs. because of the iconic hits and undeniable skill and talent, i have to give this at least a 7.5

The final section of the album is very good, I like Remedy, Love in The Dark and Sweetest Devotion the most of all songs, even though it's blatantly melodramatic and exaggerated. I just can't get past the obviously clichè melodies, such as "Million Years Ago" that ripped off "Mulheres" by Toninho Geraes. Adele is a musician that insists in trying to look different by plagiarizing black artists, she could stick to her whiteness, but then we would get only co-worker music, like "Water Under The Bridge" that it's literally corporative licensed music atp

First two tracks are great, but I feel like it quickly loses some steam after. I enjoy her voice, but overall this just wasn't my thing.

Wow. Banger after banger after banger. She really was the one in the 2010s. Really good stuff. I have no company’s other than I really wouldn’t come back to it as it’s not my style but she is legendary for a reason.

Wow, 21 was my 2nd generated album, and 25 is now the 747th generated album. My sense of music has changed so drastically since then, that it's interesting to return to a familiar sound with a new perspective. Adele still remains as a top vocalist of the 2000s, and while the minimalist pop beats don't hugely innovate from the mainstream at the time, the Max Martin production and mixing hold up very well and these hits are still hits a decade later. Her writing feels very authentic and unique to her, but written in a way everyone can take a piece and apply it in their own way.

I liked the Jamie XX remix of Rolling in the Deep from the previous album, but otherwise I find Adele’s material incredibly dull. Remarkable singing talent of course, but it’s the logical outcome of a generation raised on Idol.

25 feels like Adele taking her sound and making it much grander and more dramatic. I wouldn’t say it’s a step up from 21, because for me it definitely isn’t, but everything here feels bigger: the production, the emotion, and especially the vocals. Adele spends much of the album absolutely belting her heart out, and there’s no denying how powerful she sounds. “Hello” is obviously the big standout and for good reason. It’s a fantastic track and one of those songs that immediately felt like an instant classic. Adele knows exactly how to sell this kind of heartbreak, and when everything clicks, it really works. The problem is that 25 leans so heavily into the grand ballad sound that it starts wearing on me. Ballad after ballad after ballad eventually makes the album feel longer than it needs to be, and by the end I’m definitely ready for something with a little more variety. The songs aren’t necessarily bad; there are just too many of them going for a similar emotional effect. Still, this is a decent album carried by an incredible singer. There’s plenty of emotion here, and Adele certainly doesn’t hold anything back. It just doesn’t have enough variety to keep me fully engaged all the way through.

This was certainly unavoidable when it came out. The songs actually tell a story, which seems to be rare nowadays but I don't like it.

I like Adele and this clearly has some good songs about moving on, regret and so forth... But it goes on a bit. At 48 minutes it started to feel like one long song and whinge. She undeniably has a great voice though.

Hoeveel Adele albums staan hier op? Ze is wel echt ontzettend invloedrijk geweest met elk album eigenlijk. Zonder Adele geen Olivia Dean, Jorja Smith etc. Ik hou wel van die stijl qua muziek. Al was ik dan wel niet de grootste fan van Hello, ik vind die van Lionel Richie gewoon een stuk leuker eerlijk gezegd. Wel weer echt een album waarvan de singles overplayed zijn. Tenminste, toen het uitkwam. Moet toegeven dat ik het sindsdien eigenlijk nauwelijks heb gehoord. Maar de deepcuts? Dat is wel interessant! Heb toen nooit het hele album geluisterd, dus een hoop hoor ik voor de eerste keer. Zang is weer perfect, en ik vind deze stijl oprecht best nice. Maar merk dat ik dit album wel echt een stuk minder goed vind dan 21. Daar twijfelde ik best wel over of het 5 sterren moest zijn, dat heb ik hier totaal niet. Vond op dat album ook de wat kleinere nummers eigenlijk nicer, de meer jazzy nummers zeg maar. Die zijn hier volledig het raam uit. Adele zingt alles op standje 20 en elk nummer is daardoor vooral ook een demonstratie van hoe goed ze kan zingen. Tsja, ik ben hier echt minder enthousiast over dan 21, weet ik dat ook weer. The house cleared out and I was waiting for the Knights to play the Panthers so I can see who Easts are playing in the grand final next week. So I did a Dimery trawl to see what I've missed, and should miss. Then I saw this and thought fuck it, go round more more time. The last one of hers I experienced was 18 or something or other, numbers are her thing yeah? So wow, turned up and did it again. See I don't go with the voice stuff, I want to feel something not just experience the range of notes and shit. I feel nothing listening to her. So then it comes down to the songs, yet again. They are not good, period. This is very ordinary stuff which will not stand any test of time. I don't get it at all.

I can't stand Marvell movies; in constantly trying to create four-quadrant, billion-dollar blockbusters, they must adhere to a formula of the same characters, canned dialogue, CGI eye-candy, and repetitive roller-coaster plot structures, all culminating the same inevitable 45 minutes of climactic explosions. In aiming for broadest possible appeal, they buff off all the interesting edges and surprises and end up with formulaic middle-of-the-road pap, all sugar rush with no nutritional value. And I fear that is what Adele became. The massive success of '21' was a unique blockbuster success for the 21st century post-Napster record industry, and the pressure on her to repeat the achievement was clear. Her resultant writer's block was well documented. And the lyrics reflect someone who is exhausted and aged beyond their years. We have ended up with the musical equivalent of a Marvell film, with dramatic ballads, massive arrangements and enough reverb to fill the Grand Canyon in place of CGI explosions. This is aiming to be a big, mass-appeal blockbuster, and as such it compromises the charm and musical warmth of '21' (which was hardly the world's most challenging record, but immensely likable). Some people hate on Adele for being mega-popular, but I refer to Carl Wilson's thesis in his book Let's Talk About Love: Why Other People Have Such Bad Taste. He focuses on Celine Dion, but people level the same criticism against Adele as against Celine; critics call her mawkish and overblown while millions of fans around the world adore her “huge pipes” and even bigger feelings. This record isn't "cool", but it is well crafted, produced and she sings the hell out of it. I mentioned to my wife and son that I was reviewing this album today, and they immediately went off. "25? Great songs!" and both started singing their favourites, four or five of them. My wife especially likes the more up-tempo tracks. Personally, I think it leans to heavily on the ballads, but this is a beautifully crafted and sung album that people really like. Hard to argue with that. 3.5 stars, rounding up. I endorse Count Binface's electoral platform; we _should_ nationalize Adele.

I had already praised Adele’s voice in my review of “21,” but I noted room for improvement in her songwriting. Instead of improving in this area or seeking professional help, things have gotten significantly worse on “25.” Her voice is still impressive, but the album doesn’t contain a single song worthy of special mention. Instead, one must even criticize her tentative attempts at more elaborate instrumentation, which push “Send My Love” and “I Miss You” squarely into the realm of kitsch. Of course, it’s not realistic to expect an entire LP full of “Rolling In The Deep.” However, some improvement over “21” - or at least a consistent level of quality - wouldn’t have been too much to ask. In that sense, I can’t understand all the hype surrounding “25.” Of course, it’s not a bad album (you’d have to deliberately sabotage it to make it bad, given Adele’s voice), but from my perspective, it’s nothing special at all.

Very similar reaction as to 21 by her (my very first album on here!) -- certainly not bad, but not really my thing. Which is fine.

There's no denying Adele. I can't front and act like I don't occasionally have tears in my eyes listening to her wail certain notes. She's deep. She's also a Taurus Sun, Sagittarius Moon, and Cancer Rising (IYKYK). My only thing is I feel like a lot of it is almost overproduced. Like it sounds too multi-tracked or too wide or something. But at the same time, that's kinda the sound of of this music, big and overpowering. I don't know how I'd do it differently. Like I'm not sure if stripping it down would be the move necessarily. But there's something in the production that keeps me at a distance. Nevertheless, Adele is amazing.

I’m curious what Adele’s music would sound like if she stopped centering men. Girl, put that voice into singing about something deeper! Bring some heart and soul into the music. Because this album feels like a cliche and that’s a shame with a voice like that.

God. Never thought it, but that face is making me cringe. And I liked 21. But this album? Somehow I am disliking it more every time I hear it. Ok, to be fair, Adele has an amazing voice. It’s not well trained, but she makes the most of it, for better and for worse. And the production on this, while dated, and I am sure that’s hugely distracting for some, is top notch. That album opener is GRIPPING. And the production quality is top level throughout. So what’s my issue with this album? The constant refrain of aging from someone so far from 30. I mean yeah, I feel you, but it’s the LAST thing I want to hear, honestly, because it starts to sound like whining. I’ll fill you in on a secret: WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. Not just age. Death comes for us all. You are lucky if you get to age. It’s the privilege of getting to live. 3 Boolean: 🤷‍♀️

Such an amazing voice. Album honestly is a little dull. The music doesn’t match her talent. Not bad at all, just repetitive production with subpar lyrics. “Hello” is the clear standout followed by “A Million Years.”

Album #169: Adele – 25 ⭐⭐ She's Adele and she needs no introduction. Probably the most difficult album I've reviewed on this list so far, and probably the biggest mixed bag of an album that I have heard. I have as many complaints as I have positive things to say. It starts off well. Hello, while by no means my favourite of the mega chart-topping hits of the last few decades, is decent. It has a bombastic and highly dramatic climax, which is good, but it suffers from the biggest issue that befalls the album: the lyrics, which I'll get to in a bit! Send My Love (To Your New Lover) is the best song on the album by a country mile. It's got a great earworm of a chorus, with a fantastic and unique vocal melody. I Miss You falls short of the previous two tracks, but it's not bad! It lacks a great hook, but for a six-minute song it zips by in its melodramatic way. Then, it all falls apart. We get the first of a series of dreary piano ballads with clichéd themes and lyrics. It seems every time this album moves towards something interesting or unique, a fucking ballad about regret, youth or love lost comes along with the most overused, clichéd lyrics. I Miss You leads into When We Were Young, River Lea into Love in the Dark, Million Years Ago into All I Ask. Absolute snoozefest. I feel like anyone could have written these songs. I was routinely able to guess the next lyric of most of these monotonous, sombre piano ballads because it was so clear what she was going to sing. Basic, boring rhymes, single sad piano chord. Wash, rinse, repeat. The aforementioned songs in between are all quite good and diverse. I also really liked the closer, Sweetest Devotion. It's a moment of brightness on an exceptionally dour album. Her voice is good. I'm not going to sit here and say it blows me away. I'm sure from a technical standpoint it's outstanding, but for my ears, it doesn't do much. And on All I Ask, it seriously started to grate on me, especially on that ear-splittingly horrible key change. The worst track on the album for me. I don't want to be a snob and just bash chart music for the sake of it. But there is an eerie, off feeling to this album. This feels like a very abstract point, but it's been plaguing my mind while listening to this. This is a mega-selling album, and that's fine, but I get this horrible feeling that it was made to be a mega-selling album rather than a classic. Take Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. It's probably a bad example, as they were going for a more commercial sound on that album. But Rumours sounds and feels like a classic that went on to become a mega-selling album. Adele's 25 sounds like a mega-selling album that was made to become a mega-selling album. You hear it pumped into dressing rooms in clothes shops when you're trying and failing to fit into some shitty clothes, because it's made to sound like that. That's its purpose. It feels like it was made by a committee, because it probably was. Adele is, even at this stage of her career, an industry. But, they didn't hide the brush strokes well enough. It feels like it was mapped out on a spreadsheet. Excel spreadsheet pop. It's not an album you need to hear before you die, but it will be an album that's shoved down your throat, one way or another, before you die.

Adele's third album is more engineered that 21, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. With more electronic elements, it gives Adele more of a space to expand her horizons. If 21 was the breakup album, this is the album were she settles into her new reality. Despite the studio work, Adele's voice still has its rawness; she crackles, wails, and belts, showing her full vocal gifts. Her singles discuss moving on to a new life, while her tracks "Remedy" and the closing track "Sweetest Devotion" discusses her life as a new mom. While it's not quite as ground-shifting as 21, this stands on its own as a certified banger.

LOL at every review here being some metal head saying, “this is absolute dogshit, but you have to admit she has the voice of an angel." And then you click through to that user's page and it's a wall of 5-star ratings for the entire discography of Sepultura, and 1-star ratings for Dylan and the Beatles and other vaunted, established figures of musical history. But isn't that what's beautiful about music? And taste? That there's such a wide range that can interest people, both as musicians and listeners? It makes me wonder why someone with such a narrow idea of what makes something good would even sign up for a project like this instead of just researching and following the rabbit hole of one's own particular interests, but that's just me. As for Adele? This music is not really for me. But you have to admit she has the voice of an angel.

Look, a part of me has to rate this album highly. 2015 was the first year of my life that I regularly started to listen to American/English music, and '25' was absolutely massive when it came out. And after finally listening to it in full, a decade after its release...it's solid! Not fantastic, and I don't think it's her best, but Adele is such a fantastic vocalist, and it's such a genuinely emotional album that it just kind of works despite it all. 'When We Were Young' in particular, is one of the absolute best pop songs of the 2010s, easily the album highlight and quite possibly my favorite Adele song period. It's really good.

Ok but a bit forgettable. Didn’t really maintain my attention.

One of the great vocalists of our time and this album proves it. Wish she would take more risks since you can hear that all of this is in her comfort zone (which just proves what a talent she is).

Adele really really can sing, just an amazing instrument, that voice. And these are pretty solid pop compositions that showcase that instrument. But these confectionary delights are just not for me. My heart doesn't swell in those ways or something. Maybe my speakers enjoyed the workout, maybe they're lubricated now.

When We Were Young

It was good lowk kinda boring but beautiful

(4/5) We got both Adele albums practically back to back (four days apart), and this one doesn't significantly change my opinion. 3.5 rounded up, because Dimery is a twat-biscuit who didn't include enough women on the list. Her voice pulls each song out of ordinary/slight mediocrity and is the feature on both albums. The music/arrangements aren't any better or worse than "21", and if I were in a worse mood that could have penalized this one. I would have expected some growth, but the mid-2010's corporate music machine probably dictated that the music not significantly change... Which it didn't.

This is my 2nd Adele album in four days on the list, which lends to some good comparison between the two. If anything, this album feels slightly more emotional and passionate, perhaps due to growth as an artist, or as a result of some experiences in her life making her a bit more jaded than four years prior. The compositions are very similar, but perhaps with a deeper, smokier tone in general. It's still a pretty solid 4/5, and I appreciate the variety and maturity on display here.

I found it to be well performed stuff, but aimed at an audience I just don't have to much in common with. Looking at the track list for this one I'm even less familiar with it as I'm not sure I recognize any of the titles, much less can claim to have heard any of it. I could be wrong though. THE TRACKS "Hello" - For the first nine seconds or so I was convinced this might possibly be a Lionel Richie cover, but it becomes very clear, very quickly it was not. Adele's voice is just as strong and versatile as anything on that last album, and if this track is an indication ( which I often assume these openers to be) then we might be more focused on a certain epic pop ballad sound this go round. This has strong vibes of the kind of 2000s BIG CHHORUS pop sound of something like One Republic's "Apologize". I get why these things are popular, they just don't do anything for me. "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" - From a quick glance at the credits, it seems like Adele has a bit more diverse crew helping her out with production duties this go around. On this track I see Max Martin credited, who I am actually somewhat familiar with, him having penned and written or co-written so many MASSIVE pop hits that even I have heard a lot of them. "I Want It That Way" and pretty much everything the Backstreet Boys ever put out, "...Baby One More Time" and "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears, "Show Me Love" by Robyn, "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson, "Blinding Lights" by the Weeknd, "Can't Stop the Feeling!" by Justin Timberlake, a ton of Taylor Swift's biggest hits, similar work with Katy Perry, Usher, Ariana Grande, and Coldplay to name but a few. I hope this guy has at least two or three money bins he can swim around in. Anyway, all that is to say this song is very catchy in that radio-ready earworm way, but feels like it could have been released any number of those artists I mentioned and feels a bit cookie-cutter. But if the formula works, why not? It's possible I've heard this at a Panera or the Mall or something and just didn't clock it as Adele. "I Miss You" - A romantic love ballad that left me pretty cold. There's a drum loop that adds a slightly different feel, but then the chorus builds into that generic EPIC sound that makes it sounds like so much of the modern radio pop noise. "When We Were Young" - A nice, understated and elegant piano line brings us back into more suitable material. Adele's voice shines on this, but damn was it boring and trite. "Remedy" - Adele leans heavy into the soulful registers of her voice, and the minimalist approach with the instrumentation is much more palatable. "Water Under the Bridge" - Gun to my head, I could not have told you the difference between this and any random Katy Perry song. Adele seems stripped almost entirely of anything that makes her delivery special on this. Dreadful stuff. "River Lea" - This seems to be influenced simultaneously by 90s club music and gospely dance pop stuff like Madonna's "Like a Prayer", but has none of the energy or character of any of that stuff. It sounds like the opening credits theme to a third tier Showtime crime show. Sorry Dangermouse. "Love in the Dark" - This wasn't completely awful, and the opening had a restrained Lana Del Rey sound to it. And there was an identifiable, and somewhat memorable vocal melody. "Million Years Ago" - This was far more interesting than anything else so far. A nice little acoustic samba-influenced number where you get Adele in full form and without all the distracting production that has been overwhelming her. "All I Ask" - It took four ( count them 4) writers to male this schmaltzy, corny thing, one of them Bruno Mars. Aside form Adele's voice, this is on par with some of the worst 70s pap from the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan ( "Alone Again, Naturally" ), Morris Albert ( "Feelings"), or Debby Boone ("You Light Up My Life"). "Sweetest Devotion" - Some 90s electronic pop influences, and the interesting delivery in the verses give this a little bit of something. Not much though. If "River Lea" sounded like opening tv credits theme, this one could work easily well as the closing credits song for a Pixar sequel. Imagine it now - as the touching robot marriage ceremony ends, this song kicks in with Wall-E and EVE dancing as the now hideously loose-skinned humans in the wedding party all cheer and clap, and we fade to black as Adele's voice soars out of the tinny movie theater speakers. The lows were much lower, and the highs not as high. While the production was still top tier, and Adele's voice was great, it felt like she was at the whims of her many collaborators, and there didn't seem to be as much of an authorial voice to the thing as a whole. Even the best songs were more a result of all the other ones sucking so hard that they looked great by comparison. While not pure garbage, it was far less interesting than 21, and doesn't inspire me to seek out anything else from her. Both Adele albums in the same week. How random! At least we had them in chronological order. Unfortunately, foe 25 we had them so close and in chronological order. 25 lacks the punch of 21 and listening to them so close together makes those differences standout. To be sure Adele is a magnificent vocal talent and any follow-up to a 30 million unit selling album would probably feel like a drop. The production is high polished and the songs are well done. Here n 25 though we more regretful, doing more reminiscing. Tracks like “I Miss You”, “Water Under the Bridge”, and “When We Were Young” show a more older wiser singer. From my mid 40s though a “When We Were Young” sentiment coming from a 25 year old feels pretentious. I’d love to be as young as 25 again. So yeah, 25 doesn't have the energy of 21, but maybe that’s showing how time comes for us all. Hello, from the other, older side of life. For me a 3/5

I don’t mind a bit of Adele. She has an amazing voice and whilst this is still a good album I don’t feel it’s her best. Glad I listened to it again though.

I love Adele’s routine of putting out an album every 5 years and then just disappearing entirely This is a pretty quintessential 2015 pop album. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard Hello while shopping or in restaurants, but I do still think it’s a great song especially when finally listening with headphones for the first time. She’s a generational vocalist, where she’s able to put more emotion in those lyrics than just about anyone. There’s actually more variety than I expected in this one, kinda had the assumption all her songs were just somber and depressing but I forgot she did Send My Love. I do think her musics kinda boring at times even though it sounds nice, and emotionally it doesn’t really seem the deepest. Even though she has a few tracks that don’t fit that slow piano ballad thing she’s known for, the rest of the album is pretty must just that. Still though, extremely listenable and there’s a reason she’s one of the most popular musicians of the 21st century. Another rare W for 1001 for choosing music that people liked in the 2010s

Adele’s previous album (21) was nothing short of greatness overall, and it was an unavoidable cultural phenomenon, and for good reason. Adele’s abilities as a singer are insane and though her abilities as a songwriter are a little more inconsistent, the best tracks from that album gave any contemporary artist a run for their money. With that in mind I find myself disappointed with 25. My first listenings were not positive, but I hoped that it would grow on me over time, a third listening has confirmed my feelings. Adele is a talented artist, but 25 is a letdown. It’s not terrible, but there’s no real surprises here, nothing dazzles in the way that “Rolling in the Deep,” “Rumour Has It,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” or “Someone Like You” did. There was an edge to 21, an emotional power that seems oddly muted here. “Hello” and “When We Were Young” seem to have gotten most of the attention, but both of those songs feel a little safe and generic to me. In retrospect, I know that Adele would go on to make some more good albums, but I’m also sure that 25 is not it.

I hope someday Adele makes an album solely produced by 1 producer I like. She's an incredible vocalist, she makes really good songs, but the music is really boring most of the time. The only songs I really enjoyed are Hello and the ones produced by Paul Epworth. I think I like 21 and 30 better than this.

Adele is a great talent, no one with functional auditory receptors would question that, but there is an element of sadness and wistfulness that she seems very hung up on, to the point of obsession. Her music is basically well performed misery porn, and while I’m all about some whiny emo rock, listening to a cappella and sometimes piano backed, heart-bearing melancholia for 30 minutes to an hour at a time is a tall task. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

If I was to describe this album as a Hex code it would be this: #D5BA98 I shouldn’t waste too many words on this but here are a few observations: As with the previous Adele album we had, it front loads: Hello is a song destined for bad karaoke when a few Prosecco’s deep, with its soaring chorus and aspirational high notes; the second track has an interesting chorus(which reminded me of something else). From then on it was variations of bland with highly personal and emotionally charged lyrics written by a target market-driven focus group. On the subject of Hello, the drum production was an interesting choice, with the choice seeming to be recording them underwater. I was expecting them to emerge from the water for the big finish but they stayed there, bubbling away. This meant the song never had a release, with every chorus edging towards a big finish but never quite getting there. She has an undeniably powerful voice but it lacks subtlety and is used to mask the lack of quality in song-writing. She got the benefit of the doubt with a 2 for her previous album but this shows no progression.

I’m sorry Adele, your voice is incredible at times (those pitch glides are near effortless) but why does every song have to be ‘epic’? Each one apparently has to have gospel choir, or orchestral arrangement, or something equivalent and it loses its impact by the 4th or 5th song. ‘Semd my love (to your new lover)’ is at least a little bit out of the norm and has a bit of swing to it, the rest is trite and far too safe.

Generic and boring. If you take the vocals off, most tunes sound like the background music of corporate videos.

Hullo from the estate of Lionel Richie, you have been sued in the state of California. A beautiful song about stalking a blind girl taken and made into a song of similar quality about *adjusts glasses* I don't know. Ol' "25" lingered on the Friday of a long weekend and like a curse from my former self, its fetid corpse now lies before me on this accursed "day after long weekend." It's a very capitalist concept to call it a "long" weekend. If you've ever thought, "Gee whiz, maybe this weekend is TOO long" then you suck. No weekend is long enough, especially when you have undertaken the British-est music list ever assembled in addition to salve labour lite (Premium coming soon!). Because of the extra day, and as a punishment for my Friday Adele procrastination, this is the FIRST of the three albums I'll be listening to on this miserable day. My penance will be paid. I really believe that popular singers know that the vast majority of people won't venture past the singles into the deeper cuts and is that ever apparent on "25." Calling the lyrics generic would be far too kind. We've got pining for being younger, we've got lost love, found love, and we've got only the most basic similes to build out these humdrum song topics. If we get a "phoenix from the ashes" metaphor by the end of this, you owe me 15 cents in your currency of choice. Sir, there's been a second Adele album. She sings in cursive and that pisses me off but like other than that and whatever the fuck is going on with the production, it’s an okay album. My mom listened to Adele nonstop for years and so I’m not sure if it’s got sentimental value or not but I do really love when we were young. It and water under the bridge are the only tracks that don’t make this album a fat fucking 0. In terms of mom music she’s rather good but the bar is at the ground.

Dang, this brought me back. She has such an incredible powerhouse of a voice, but I do wish there was some diversity to the song themes. Felt like listening to a slightly different flavor of the same food over and over again for an hour-ish.

Adele is a very talented singer, a decent songwriter and performer, but her albums always seem a little flat. Similar pace, similar feel, similar subject, not just on an album by album basis but across her entire body of work. I remain unexcited.

Didn't particularly need to listen to this one due to how much I already heard it on repeat as a kid. My mum has been a massive Adele fan right from the start, so she'd put the CDs on until she got sick of them. Brought back childhood memories and things like that, but didn't do too much more for me personally.

Overall, it wasn’t that bad. Personally, it’s not really my genre, and there were a few songs that weren’t really my type. But ugh, I almost teared up listening to “Love in the Dark.” I could really relate to some of the songs, especially “Love in the Dark,” “All I Ask,” and “Water Under the Bridge.” I don’t know, they just hit a little too close to home at the moment. She’s really talented, but if she keeps choosing to sing about the same thing, it can get a little boring at some point.

Being my first time listening to a full Adele record, I've got to say...I'm impressed. 25 is filled with insightful and well penned tracks that carry a maturity that belies her true age when they were written. More than that, unlike many of her contemporaries, Adele has more than radio singles on offer here. There's no filler to be found, though obviously some songs outperform others. She's not my style, but Adele has earned my respect with this dive into 25.

First time I've honestly listened to anything from Adele. Not my regular type of music but some of it was good. Started off very strong, made great first impressions. The middle of it was weak enough to lose my interest as it wasn't my style - and wasn't that good - but the last 4 tracks ended strongly and the first 3 were great too. Definitely worth a listen.

The cover art sums up this album really well - a picture of Adele in greyscale. The focus of the music here is clearly Adele's voice, which is great, but the music is just... dull and grey. The themes, the lyrics, the actual musicality - it's just bland, slightly depressing, mush. A picture of a bowl of gruel would also be an appropriate album cover. I really want to rate this higher because honestly Adele's vocals are just that good, but the album as a whole just isn't interesting enough to warrant a high score.

Listening to the first song and remembering when this came out I always thought it was the song that was like "Hello, is it me you're looking for?" I like how she's complaining about being old, tbf I felt similar at 25 but it pushed me to enjoy late 20s more than my early 20s. Past me is jealous of the life I'm currently living. Anyway she has a nice voice but what's the point if you aren't going to use instruments to further enhance it?

Like a large bar of chocolate - sweet, and sickly - it is best consumed in small doses. Soaring vocals, aided by crisp production, show obvious talent. But too much of it just starts to grate after a while. She sings album tracks like she’s giving a concert performance - but quality is not evidenced by volume alone.

Hello, it’s me, a hit so good even you that don’t listen too much mainstream still love. I miss you, maybe this one you didn’t know. Now really, this is one of the best comercial albums, from a truly talented singer, with so many hits, which is something, even though Send My Love I didn’t know was Adele, and it was a song that really annoyed me in the mid 2010s when I had to listen to radio on my way to school. But Hello and I Miss You are certified 5 star songs. Honorable mentions: Million Years Ago, River Lea, and the other hits that maybe weren’t my thing but they were successful nonetheless

I will not succumb to the Adelle agenda. Music for people that like the radio being on in the background. There are a few certified bangers on here, but jesus Adele, can you dial it down a notch? This album has all the over the top drama people long for on their pathetic lives.

I think she has gotten more mature from 21, and it shows. Her cover of The Cure off of 21 still rubs me wrong. I don't like anyone covering Cure songs. anyways, this album is good, and is one of the British artists that actually deserves to be on this list, unlike the hundreds of middling 90's Britpop and British Rap album schlock on here.

Every song in this is straight 5 stars for me! While it is my first time to formally listen to the whole album in chronological order, I have always known each song by heart or by memory. I just realized how strong Adele's influence is to the kind of pop culture I've grown up with. This is very heartwarming, heartbreaking, & heart-opening. A collection of my years. All the milestones I've walked during my teens has a soundtrack from this album, depending on which song was popular during those times in my life. I am so 2015. I am running 25. Hard times is still far, but I can already make out a silhouette.

In my memory, Hello was the first song that social media ever killed from oversampling. I will reserve the 5 for 21, with which Adele permanently rewired my brain. But this album is still a force, and I have personally played Water Under the Bridge no fewer than 500 times.

I didn't have particular expectations and still somehow was disappointed. Production is very of it's time and sounds too generic, the songs are mostly about the same in the same words. and the worst for me is that despite Adele is miserable in most of the tracks, it's still ends up boring. I feel like if it was all a bit less literal, if she could tell a story of somebody else it would add just some substance, but 5 songs about no longer being young when you are 25 is just not it.

Skipped through it, I promise to myself that I'll revisit this record sometime in the future.

As others have noted, it’s hard to buy the songs about aging and being reflective from a 25 year old. That perspective only fills in with age and experience and even though pop stars live an accelerated lifestyle, I don’t buy those words as being her own. Still well sung though. In general this album suffers from the same bloat as many albums of the CD period. This would have been much stronger as a modern LP release if edited down to one disc. Too many songs that have similar themes and it all blends together after a while. The highs are really high and there is nothing objectively bad, just way too much meh content.

I really love Adele’s voice. I think it’s funny how the conceit of naming album’s after her age makes me hyper aware of how young some of the writing feels and the 2015 production style isn’t my fave but ultimately i am an Adacolyte.

Crazy how anticipated this album was after a “hiatus” post-21 and here we are in 2026, a decade without new Adele. The is *the* Adele album for me. I was in a real /album/ phase in this time of my life and I was doing a lot of front-to-back listening. So I really enjoyed coming back to 25 and was surprised by the fondness I have for it. Send My Love… and Water Under the Bridge are some of my all-time fave Adele tracks and really elevate this album for me!

Another Adele so soon!! I know this album was absolutely massive and set all kinds of sales records at the time, but I don’t feel it has lingered much in the public consciousness, and I don’t remember much besides Hello and Send My Love To Your New Lover (Max Martin stans rise up). But, despite this album being a bunch of ballads, I enjoyed it a lot. They’re just very well written, solid songs and obviously her voice is great. New songs I particularly enjoyed were I Miss You, Remedy, Water Under The Bridge (okay I had heard that one before) and Sweetest Devotion Do we think 35/36 will be coming soon???

For a soul singer, she is profoundly soulless.

There's a reason pop is pop. It can draw many people in. Why? Well, in this case, it's a combination of Adele's soaring vocals and the stellar production. The piano and strings perfectly compliment her voice. 4.5/5

I wanted to DNF this right from the start it is too 'safe' and lacks authenticity. Adele can sing but this was a painful listen every track lacked character and felt like commercial radio.

The generic balladry is more prominent and the songwriting is comparably worse and entirely unmemorable. Where are the memorable choruses, at least? If Hello is the best there is to offer in that regard then this one is pretty weak. Adele might have peaked at 21

It's just kinda simple good shit, with enough depth and nuance to actually unironically enjoy. Hits were good duh, Love In The Dark was awesome, Million Years Ago was awesome. Would unironically put this on in the car when none of the homies are around 7.5/10

Amaze balls

Adele truly is a very talented artist with such a powerful voice, and it works very well with the music she makes, but I'm afraid it tends to be bland and very classy in a predictable way, which makes it at times a bit uninteresting or even boring. And, the thing is, many artists with great voices nowadays tend to search for those kinds of popish soul and rhythm and blues that are so insipid. The issue here is this album does not go beyond but just sticks to the canon, and, to be honest, it's not even outstanding at that. So, there are some nice songs, a great voice, talent too, but it lacks of some more personality. I'm not implying there is not, but it feels not yet developed.

🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 (rounded down my rating because they dumbed down these lyrics for the lowest common denominator) Okay. Alright. I gave this one a shot because Adele was really important to Emily growing up and, for someone who lives under a rock, I have very few—if any—conceptions as to what Adele should sound like. For perspective, my first exposure to the song "Hello" was a Westboro Baptist Church parody (don't ask), and I only recognized "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" from, y'know, "Semaluhtounuyulohowwah." Really, I was a pretty clean slate. Musically, I've got to say, there's plenty to like here. Everyone's already given Adele her flowers as a vocalist (though, and I'm not even saying this to be some kind of asshole, I feel like she's at times too controlled to really feel raw, right? Still impressive belting on a lot of these, but it didn't rip me open, I guess), but for as overproduced as this album is, some of the melodies are pretty fun. I genuinely enjoyed “I Miss You,” and I loved the sort of warped, fuzzy production on the background harmonies of that one, "Water under the bridge," and "River Lea." Actually, I have mixed feelings about "River Lea" in particular—it's super, uh, this era of pop with sort of an overproduced funk hook but, much as I tried not to, I kind of got into it. It reminds me of newer Hozier a bit, which I hope carries as much good as it does bad. That said—and with my sincerest apologies to little Emily—some of these lyrics are, to me, just awful. I started writing down the ones that made me groan so I could add them here but, and I feel cruel saying this, there was just too many to make it practical. When I was a kid and would write lyrics or poetry, I'd often throw in filler words to clunkily fill the meter, but listening back, I was always disappointed you could tell. Here are some that sound like that: “When the night keeps you from sleeping” “I should probably tell you now before it’s way too late / that I never meant to hurt you or to lie straight to your face” “Life was a party to be thrown / but that was a million years ago” “When the world seems so cruel / and your heart makes you feel like a fool” Lyrical fluff abound! Sometimes, there's also these passages that have a similar not-quite-human feeling, like they're grasping for a metaphor. This is also very evil of me, but if these lines were released today, I'd say they sounded like AI: “If you’re not the one for me / then how come I can bring you to your knees?” “I wish I could live a little more / look up at the sky and not the floor” There are a few that feel like they're trying to tap into a feeling that hasn't been felt, but look, who am I to judge? I don't know, something like this felt like it was grasping at straws: “When I walk around all of the streets / where I grew up and found my feet / they can’t look me in the eye / it’s like they’re scared of me” Finally, the simplicity of these words lulled me into feeling (correctly) like I could just predict which rhyme came next. But then there were rhymes that were so bad they looped back around to being unpredictable? Like, take this one: “Have I ever asked for much? / The only thing that I want is your ___” what’s it gonna be? Touch? NO! "Love"??? Huh?? Look, I really regret how mean all of this comes off, but truly, where the lyrics are a 1, I genuinely feel like the music alone would've been a 3. Sorry, Emily.

Oh wow, how did I never realize that this is so… not great??? I’ve always liked 19 and 21 best, but I think I Stockholm syndromed myself into thinking 25 was almost on their level. It’s not! Absolutely mid, with allowances for my own nostalgia.

Adele has an extraordinary voice, and a gift for songwriting. It's not a style I listen to often, but I have to admire the skill and talent.

Hello - growing up listening to radio pop with my mom nearly made me skip this song from how overplayed this was, but upon relistening to it I have found that this is a really good song Send my love - oh my glob this one too, I didn't know what this was called When we were young - very beautiful song, great lyrical storytelling River Lea - good bass groove with the drums

Opening track is strong, the rest not so much.

First impression: I was really excited because this album is outside of my typical taste in music. Although I’m already well acquainted with Adele’s music (thanks to the radio in 2015), it’s been awhile thus re-listening felt novel again. She definitely has one of the most cinematic voices out there. I love how percussive the album was with iconic bells solidifying her sound. Sure many songs were repetitive but all in all still good. Favourite track: Send My Love (surprisingly resonated/inspired me) One sentence: Adele blends nostalgia, youth, heartbreak with grace and sincerity; and I adore that. Will I revisit? Yes

Eh - Adele has a fine voice, but with a few exceptions I tend to find her songs quite samey and dull, and this is a perfect example. Hello is a nice opener, but a full album of weepy ballads just doesn't go anywhere. It's not offensive, but I have no deaire to listen again. Her earlier stuff seemed to have more variety - there's nothing dancy like 'Rumour Has it', for example. A high 2.

Let me preface this with saying that I don't like this kind id music. It's style over substancje and way too much fluff. But even then, this album is a very nice listen. I'd probably rate this a lot higher if I was into this kind of music, but even I have to admit it's good.

I’ve never listened to an Adelle album before, and by 3 songs in Inwas wondering if I’d missed a trick. Not to fear, it went downhill from there and became predictably cheesy for the duration. Solid songwriting, but not my thing and very much what I’d expected.

Vivid memories of this cd being played as my mom drove berty and me to school 🥺 we’d just be belting the most emotional lyrics in our little kid voices from the backseat. I’m sure we blended quite well with adele’s voice Maybe a nostalgia bias but this album is actually so good. The lyrics, the VOCALS, the music. Such a pretty listen Can’t even pick a favorite but my mom would play remedy on the piano so I have a specific love for that one

yea this is an incredible album. All of the songs are unique but also very comprehensive together. I listened to all i ask driving to/from black hawk A LOT my senior/freshman year and it holds as my favorite from the album.

I need to be transparent in this review… this album is incredibly nostalgic for me. My mom had this CD in her car and we would listen to it on the way to elementary school. Just now, she texted me that she still has the CD somewhere in her garage. I’ve heard some of these songs dozens of times and their lyrics are etched into my brain alongside the rose-tinted memories of early education. Regardless of my personal bias towards this album, 25 still has to be one of the greatest modern soul/pop albums. Fueled by the engine that is Adele’s voice, every track makes you gawk at how someone can belt with such ferocity and emotion. Her lyrics are full of self-reflection, and each one hits with a certain level of maturity that feels genuine and humble. (Though, nothing about her voice feels humble whatsoever.) Gorgeous orchestration and piano pieces back the songs as well, creating a uniquely smooth and, at times, emotionally devastating experience. I LOVE this album so much. Favorite Tracks: Water Under the Bridge I Miss You

I'm turning 50 this year and I've listened to music from every genre but this dramatic, emotional radio pop has never done anything for me. i can't think of a situation where I'd want to sit down and listen to this. Obviously influential since so many artists make a lot of money for record labels by sounding like this but I can't get into it. Sorry, I gave it a shot.

Kevin Abstract released a song a bit ago: Geezer. It has a refrain: he hasn’t been around that long, he’s just old for his age. Yeah. That’s how I feel about Adele listening to this album. Give me a f*ing break. You’re 25! You broke up and made the most of it with 21. Don’t want to keep hearing about it on 25. Don’t want to hear about the passing years and how old you are now when you’re still this side of 30. Even the two singles on this album feel tired. 2 - for the singles. That are decent Boolean: FALSE

The best thing to emerge from MySpace: Adele Not a bad song on this album. Adele at 25 could sing the names in a phone book and I would melt. My first 5/5 on this 1001/1089 Album journey.

Incredible talent. I think criticising her work for being to uniformly is undermining her artistic mind. The songs being similar in sound and content is much more a marketing strategy. Her success proofs her right. I like: when we where young Hello has nostalgic value for me, The rest is meh.

I expected to be giving this a 1 star. If she comes on the TV or radio I switch it off if I can't, I leave the room if I can’t do either I stick my fingers in my ears and sing la la la till It’s over. However, after listening to a full album of poor poor me songs, I have to admit she has a great voice and does have a talent

Couple banger ballads for the lads in here. Her voice is just insane. Might be recency bias but going to give this one a 3, but it's a strong 3. Pretty simple musically, but her voice carries it. Fave Songs: When We were young, Send my Love

Adele is great. Powerful voice with no gimmicks. The songwriting here is just slightly above-average (21 is the masterpiece), but she is completely naked with her intentions and message, and that is admirable.

Feel like it says it all that my favorite Adele song is her Bond theme for Skyfall and almost nothing from one of her albums. Send My Love (To Your New Lover) comes pretty damn close though, and Water Under the Bridge is fine. It’s broadly inoffensive. She’s still the milquetoast white girl ideal of pop soul, which means she takes zero risks and gets a hell of a lot of reward.

From a song and instrumentation standpoint, fairly safe, not much in the way of innovation. But this record is an exceptional example of how much a generational singer can elevate music. Adele’s voice is extraordinary, and every one of these songs gives me chills because of it. I don’t really like safe, modern pop, but this is a very nice album because of the vocal work.

It was my favorite album of all time before exploring other music in more depth. An undoubtedly excellent artist.

Ok. I don’t like this kind of pop music. It all sounds the same to me. It’s ok while I’m listening to it. What I mean by that is that it’s unobjectionable… most of the time. It just doesn’t stick to me. I forget about it seconds after I hear it. There’s usually no musical hook. It’s just kind of moves forward without going anywhere. That being said… this is probably as good as this style of pop music is going to get. This lady is a great singer. I get it. She sings with so much emotion and power. It’s moving. Almost manipulative. If you’re heartbroken or one of your parents just died, don’t listen to this… or do if you want to cry. You’re going to cry. Maybe that’s what you need. It’s sad piano music for people who need a good cry, but if you’re one of those emotionally healthy people who needs to cry a lot, this is as good as it gets. I don’t want to cry. I have things to do today. 3.3

Alright look. I like Adele. I like her songs, I think they're well written. I like her voice, very powerful and distinct. Not just belting for the sake of it, and great range. But god the production and arranging on these albums is so grating to me. Send Your Love is probably my favorite song by her, GODLY chorus on that one, super well written song. But then when it actually hits, there's a bunch of 2015 bullshit in the way! The barking "heys", reverse TR808 cymbal right on every bar, weak ass claps instead of a snare, get that shit outta there. Hello, again, well written song and uses her vocal range and power really well. Same with When We Were Young and Remedy. They all have that "dramatic cinematic reverb piano" thing though and that stinks cuz it's supposed to be a display of raw emotion but god it's so BORING It's 2.5 for me but it's brimming with "what it could be" energy. This album has a lot of good in it, but suffers from coming out right at the boom of this wave of music that's just mixed and arranged to be safe and boring and appear in car commercials. I get this makes me a snob and I'm sorry for that but it's upsetting me. Give this woman and this album a dedicated live band and some more lively arranging and I'm sure she soars, plenty of reason to believe that on display. But the production and arranging are so goddamn flat, it just feels like I'm standing in an H&M or something.

I know I should probably love this album, but it’s just ok. She certainly has the pipes, but a songlist of romantic dirges is a tough listen. Some of the individual songs are good, so…3.
