Dreadful and pointless in equal measure.
Dragged on
Lo-fi beats to chill and study to with like 10% more edge. This was perfectly fine but I’ll never return to it.
Previously unknown. Wish it still was.
Already listened before. Repeat.
I loved this probably more than I should have. This felt like it should be the soundtrack for driving mode in Cyberpunk 2077. Every track feels like it belongs somewhere in Night City, including one that seems custom-built for the red-light district. I wish I'd heard this when it came out, and I'll definitely be checking out more of their catalog. My Rating: 5/5 headlights
Just not my thing
“The Rough And The Quick” caught me allll the way off guard 😳 but I’m fw it
Too slow and sad but good album
The music schema seems more or less always the same: at the beginning or some fast or some silent rythm Almosen no effektive Sound but The Rake… this one I feeled different. I don‘t know why. It is a 1.5* for me
It’s fine, but not really my type…
3 - BAD
Another good find. Liked the more ambient side to them, love the Bass or Double Bass or whatever it is
Not bad but maybe a little to close to that chill fin de siècle music that I rarely go back to seek out now.
They are no leftfield, they aren’t even rightfield, they are bang average middle of the field. Nothing appealed to me, just felt like an album of “stuff”
Een 3,5. Kende de band alleen van naam. Paar heerlijke nummers ook! Red Snapper ga ik meer van luisteren
Actually enjoyable songs, usually this isn't my cup of tea but found it interesting.
This should have been on my radar in 2000, as I was deep in my rave era and loved all kinds of electronic music. It’s a nice mixture of electronic and acoustic, with some satisfying grooves and melodies. It’s not an album I would revisit but worth a listen. Definitely didn’t need to hear before I die, though!
I would zone out, and then something unexpected would grab my attention. Then I would zone out again...
Wow. Låter dessverre ganske pinlig i dag.
Red Snapper - Our Aim Is To Satisfy Eg ser denne kom ut i 2000, men steike for ei solid 90-talskjensle. 4/10
Kind of an acid jazz flavored Trip Hop thing; Our Aim Is To Satisfy more or less does so. The moodiness of trip hop meets something a little more organic and high energy and the result is fun, if not exactly revolutionary. This thing does run a little longer than it needs to, but it generally uses it's time well. The vibes are chill and the textures are varied. Some of the album gets a little "background noise" but a song like I Stole Your Car more than asserts itself (and is honestly probably the best on here with the brass and reggae influence). I'm going to end up with a 3 on this, but I think on a bad day it could have been a little lower. It's enjoyable, and it's reasonably interesting, but I don't really understand why it's on the list.
Frankly I don't know what's happening to me. I dug this a lot. What the fuck am I doing here? French blokes? Boots n pants? Pretty sure someone said clit at some point. I don't know. I guess I'm a sucker for music that makes me feel like Joe Cool. And this is basically that. Couple total stinkers, couple real beauties. Fuck it.
8/10
Early 2000s techno, not really a standout I prefer Moby a bit more.
it's a good album if you like relaxing electronic music i'd say I like it but in smaller doses
EDM Is one of those genres that only got better with age. Nowadays, an album like this one would be lucky to have a single liked song on somebody's Soundcloud. That being said, I kinda like it. Keeping the Pigs Together is a good experimental weird tune
2.5
By far not the worst electronic album on this list. It is also good bit away from being the best. I actually really liked the first track, "Keeping Pigs Together" It's got almost a Spacey quality, I can hear it being the theme of a Sci-Fi TV show. It fooled me into thinking this was actually going to be at least a decent album, but then the rest of it happened. There are a few more tracks that I liked. "Don't Go Nowhere" has almost a jam band quality to it while still being tethered to its loops. "Bussing" wasn't too bad. And it ended with one of its stronger tracks "They're Hanging Me Tonight". The rest of the album is an absolute chore. By the time it got to "Alaska Street" and "Belladonna", I wanted this album to be over. I think the four tracks I highlighted would probably amount to about a mild 3½★, the rest of the album might scrape a 2★... I both wanted to like this album and despise this album just a little bit more than I do. A mid 2½ feels about right. Aim better next time. (5.57) ★★½
Anonymous, but not terrible. 2.5 stars
I feel like there's so many of these late 90s/early 00s mostly instrumental electronica albums in this book and they all kind of sound the same. There were a handful of tunes that were alright, but I don't see myself ever having any desire to return to this. 2.5 stars.
Red plopper. No way this needs to be on the list.
This is terrible.
You can tell this book had alot of instances from the 2000s and later 90s albums that they hoped would age well. I could see how this would be a cool album in 2000. Maybe its just internet age, attention span talking; but I forgot i was listening to music half the time. Aim to Satisfy, accomplished if the satisfaction was a good nights sleep 1/5
I enjoyed this! I didn't move me deeply or change my world view, but it's definitely something I'd listen to again.
is jazzazz? definitely not the jazz i expected, more like trip hop or electronic chillout also giving propellerheads, chemical brothers 💥keeping pigs together 💥bussing 💥they're hanging me tonight
Not sure what to call this. Some kind of trippy sampledelia? Funky hooks, and stank basslines. Drums sound real but sequenced. Such a tight snare, loose hihat/ride cymbal, heavy kick Chopped up vocal samples. It sounds like house music, but less synths Female vocals come out of nowhere in Shellback. This track gets quite cinematic. Reminds me of Skunk Anansie here. Slap bass in places (The Rough and the Quick) reminds me of Les Rhythmes Digitales, which is from a similar time. But the rest of the sonic landscape is so different, it's interesting Love the guitar chords on Bussing (like something from Animals as Leaders) - and the trumpet and almost reggae feel This feel stays in I Stole Your Car Best track - Shellback, The Rake, The Rough and the Quick, Bussing, I Stole Your Car 4 - it's confusing, but compelling!
Surprisingly good
It sounds like something I would listen to back in the Big Sonic Chill days... but I didn't, and I won't now
Good old techno album, nothing crazy but good
It's over. IT'S FINALLY OVER!! After 1089 days, I have finally listened to every album on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list! I can't believe I'm actually here. When I first found this website on October 5, 2023, I fully expected to drop the project after no more than 2 months or so. I couldn't have imagined that I'd actually dedicate myself to making it through the whole list one album at a time. It's impressive, really. I'm proud of myself for this. I've changed a lot as a person in the time since I started this project. I've graduated from high school and entered the first years of my adulthood. I've realized that I am and started to come out as a trans woman (surprise!). I've made and lost friends. I've been to New York. I've lived life. Maybe I haven't lived as much as I should, but I'm still here after all these years. The same person at my core, but with a different perspective on... just about everything. I've learned a lot about how I feel about myself, the world, and perhaps most interestingly, music. You thought I was brain dumping just to brain dump? Do you even know who I am? Everything comes back to the topic at hand with me. This album project has given me the chance to figure out what it is that I really love about music. If anything, it's established the basic fact that I love music at all. I wasn't that passionate about music before this project. I liked it, obviously, but I didn't think about it or listen to it that much. Now? I'd go as far as to call music my most prevalent interest. I'm a music nerd now, and it's all thanks to this website. The project has had its ups and downs, but overall, I'm glad that I did this. It's given me an excuse to finally listen to some of the most revered albums and artists of all time. It's introduced me to some lesser-known artists that I may not have discovered without this project. It's given me a springboard to jump off of when diving into the world of music beyond the 1001 Albums list, which is a thing that I will do after today. I'm not done listening to albums after this one. There's still so much great music out there that I haven't heard. Granted, I will definitely be taking a substantial break from album listens, but I'll be back eventually. Maybe I'll do the user list. Maybe I'll do that 1001 More Albums list from the 1001AlbumsGenerator subreddit. Maybe I'll listen to some full discographies from artists I've come to enjoy. All I know is that this album that I have to review today will not be the last album that I listen to before I die... which is a good thing because this album is kind of underwhelming. Yeah, Our Aim to Satisfy Red Snapper is not exactly the grand finale that I had hoped for when I started nearing the end of this project. In fact, I'm actually pretty upset that I'm ending on such an irrelevant album. It kinda makes me question whether this project was even worth it at all. But I'll say this. It's not the worst album I could've gotten at the end. I could've ended on Kid Rock! That would've been bad. At the end of the day, the worst album to end on would've been the worst album on the list. Fortunately, this Red Snapper album is far from the worst album on the list. It's pretty far from the best as well though. In fact, I'd say it's right in the middle. This is one of the most middle-of-the-road albums of the whole list. It's got some good elements to it. The production is mostly solid. There's some good bass parts and drum beats that I enjoyed listening to. Some of the instrumental tracks like the opener "Keeping Pigs Together" and the closer "They're Hanging Me Tonight" are pretty good. It's nice to at least know that my final song of the 1001 Albums project is a good one. Some of the songs in the middle weren't for me though, mostly the ones with vocals. I don't know. The vocals on songs like "Some Kind of Kink" and "The Rake" didn't do it for me. Although, the rapping on "I Stole Your Car" did remind me of the flea market level in PaRappa the Rapper, so I got a kick out of that. Other than that, the album just came and went. It's not a bad listen at all, but I question its presence on a list of must-listen albums. Unfortunately, I have to give my final album a 3/5. Well, it's been nice doing this. The project may not have ended on the highest of notes, but I'm still very glad that I spent my time with this website. To everyone responsible for this project, I thank you. It's been a pleasure listening to and writing about albums for this long. Even when the albums were bad, I still got some level of enjoyment ranting about how much they sucked, and the best albums made it all worth it. Thanks for everything. - SadieStardust

Another entry from the “music from a computer hack heist movie” series - a few too many for my liking. It was fine as background music but it didn’t hold my attention at all.
2.4. didn't really track for me but I did have a moment listening to Alaska Street, driving through Chinatown (which has unfortunately gone down hill like many larger cities downtown's). it was quite the vibe on a grey day with all of the zombies slouching around.
Alaska Street and They’re Hanging Me Tonight were jaw dropping to me
Straight noise pollution
Who is choosing these albums ffs? I just wanna talk. Namely about why you’re wasting my time with garbage like this.
Good background music. Not really my thing but I did actually rate it
groovy
3.5 Good to work to? That 'cum on my tongue' really threw me off though.
I was excited to hear this as soon as I saw that it was a Trip-Hop album, and I was right to be excited! The intro track 'Keeping Pigs Together' is arguably as good as any track from the entire genre, then 'Some Kind Of Kink' comes in, it starts off weak, but when you start vibing with it, it's really infectious! I think that there's a big decline after this though, 'The Rough And The Quick', as well as 'They're Hanging Me Tonight' stood out, but most of the album was quite repetitive and unnecessary. I don't think that this is weak by any means, but if it were more consistent, I really think that I would have loved the album a lot more.
A little too all over the place to be great, this is still compelling when the band sticks to their instruments. There's so much texture and grounding in their style, a perfect blend of dub, dance, and ambient that fits in perfectly with their Warp contemporaries. When they collaborate and go into pop territory it just doesn't click. Hard to say with this one, there's a lot to like and a lot to throw away. Worth a spin and maybe some deeper diving to find any other hidden gems.
This is very obviously a 'Robert Dimery heard a british act from this time frame' addition to the list. I need some keyword I can put in all of my reviews going forward so I can annotate them. It has to be like 35% of this list conservatively estimating. I don't know what to do so I'll just do #DimeryBritPick and then I can just search on that. This is so bland and just of-the-time it was made. The sample work is just exhausting to listen to. Some obnoxious vocal sample getting played like every measure. This was still in that window I guess where that was a way to get some kind of radio hit. Absolutely annoying.
Opener and closer are the highlights.
Good overall but inconsistent, nothing stood out.
Dark, moody, jazzy beats. Sounds great on headphones. It's new to me and that's an added bonus as well.
what a terrible name for a pretty weird/cool record. some trip hop, some jazz, some beautiful electronic instrumentals. I dig it.
Neat electronic album from a band I've never heard of
Imagine if you started a project of watching all the movies on some random 1001 best films list, and you were assigned Citizen Kane and The Godfather and The Bicycle Thieves and maybe some decent movies that you don’t quite think belong like The Usual Suspects or Easy Rider but you figure they’re reasonable choices even if you wouldn’t agree with them, but then you woke up one morning surprised to find that you’d been assigned an anime you’d never heard of from 1994. Not Spirited Away or Akira or some generally recognized genre masterpiece but like a random no-name bullshit mid-90’s anime called Happy Fun Fun High School that you could not imagine why anyone would ever recommend anyone else watch, much less why someone would put on a 1001 Best Films list. But you went, “oh well, I guess a list this long is going to have some odd inclusions and taste is subjective”, and moved on. Then a few weeks go by and you get some good movies and some okay movies and some real stinkers, and then Fun Fun Amazing High School, an anime from 1997 with basically the same complete lack of notoriety and same plot as Happy Fun Fun High School, and you start to wonder what the fuck is going on. This is a 1001 best movies list. No other movie critics in the history of film criticism have included either of these two generic anime in any other lists. There’s nothing special about them. No one else on earth thinks they are worth including in a discussion of all-time great movies, if they even know what they are. They’ve basically been left behind in the dustbin of movie history and no one minds that fact. Why are two of them on the 1001 Best Films list you’re using for your movie watching project? Then a year or so passes and you’ve watched or re-watched Star Wars and Blue Velvet and Bridge Over the River Kwai and whatnot, but you’ve also suffered through Happy High School Robots Wow! and How I Survived Amazing High School and High School Amazing Robots Love Town and they are all from 1992-2000 and they all have basically the same animation style and they all have identical plots and none of them have any form of recognition from anyone else in the world other than “is listed on 1001 Films You Must Watch” being on their Wikipedia page. Now imagine that you’ve found out as you’ve been doing your movie watching project that the author of the 1001 best films list you’ve been using as its basis was the head of his high school’s anime club from 1994-1998 and wrote a book about 90’s anime and is just generally a weird weeb who likes “film” as whole okay he guesses, but for his money, random completely unremarkable 90’s anime was the peak of all artistic achievement. Imagine if you were three years into that film watching project. What would you do? Cause I am kind of hitting a wall here and I don’t really know what to do but I am straight up not having a good time.
OK
Those English like their club/electronica music. i for one, does not.
I just never could quite understand this type of music. If it is going to be 100% synthetic and computer generated, they why not make it super interesting, exciting, or beyond normal instrumental capability? But instead they make it super repetitive and pretty boring. I was bored by song two, was ready to turn it off by song four.
A disappointing choice.
Not for me. Some beats have a nice groove, but other than that, it’s garbage
We Aim to Satisfy is an enjoyable mix of electronic, jazz, and trip-hop influences that settles into a pretty appealing groove. Unfortunately, the longer the album goes, the more that groove starts to feel repetitive, making the second half less engaging than the first.
An enjoyable and eclectic album with only a couple of spots that bothered me during the listen through. I would come back to a few of these tracks.
Very nice to listen to, if a little weirder sometimes. I like to be surprised by what I enjoy.
*2000. Trip hop. *For better or worse, this list has made me more tolerant of house music. *Decent beats, interesting enough, and overall fine enough background music. *Would I ever listen to this voluntarily? No. But it was more memorable than a lot of similar albums. RATING - 5.5/10.
Underwhelming and a little confusing on what sounds they were going for. A few better songs in the middle, but not for me.
Meh, wasn't awful but wouldn't say it was good either. Just kind of boring electronic music. Felt like something out of an early 2000s video game but not in a fun way.
Kind of cool. Never heard of this band. Not surprised.
Really easy to listen to
It’s fine. It sounds like almost any album of this type. It’s not bad. But it’s not exceptional either. It’s not even memorable or interesting.
Troppo monotono
Wow! this sucks. and then you get to the weird-ass drum and bass track with a woman telling you to spit on her clit and I realised I don't know why I am listening to this.
Fun mix of styles
Not sure what to say, certainly some interesting beats, catchy mixes. And, I can’t stress this enough, use your headphones if you’re around other people.
OK but another case of why is this album on this list.
3.5
It’s goofy but quite interesting, I’ll happily have it on in the background. Close to a 4
After the first track I was not looking forward to the rest, it sounded like bad Matrix background music. But I was somewhat pleasantly surprised by next several songs. It got weirder and funkier in the middle, but kinda lost me again towards the end. "Some Kind of Kink" and "The Rake" were the standouts for me
This Trip-Hop album feels like being trapped inside a nightclub's sound system while someone keeps turning the volume and distortion up without ever changing the basic beat. The bass and drums keep hammering away underneath layers of electronic noise, keyboards and samples, while the occasional vocals seem to emerge from somewhere inside the machinery. I find the sound abrasive rather than seductive: instead of pulling me into the groove, it keeps rubbing against me. The repetition makes the experience feel increasingly claustrophobic, as though the same mechanical pulse is closing in around me. That combination of heavy live rhythm, electronic textures and persistent repetition is what gives the album its abrasive character.
Just some smooth beats
Cool enough.. I liked the drums
i remember catching these guys in animal crossing... 3k bells really helped me pay off my house upgrades. so... i guess i owe them a lot! 3 stars.
No va
Electronic ambient-ish album. Not bad, but not sure why it's here. I didn't hate this, but wouldn't revisit.
Interesante
Love this, but I'm a sucker for the genre. Massive Massive Attack vibes. 5 - a near-perfect album
Solid electronica with a few bops
I had never heard of Red Snapper prior to this and wow I loved this album! So thanks for the rec! The album goes in so many directions, but somehow stays focused and maintains a cohesive sound throughout, and as an album experience it flows perfectly. At times weird, often very groovy, seemingly repetitive but with so much great production lurking in the corners, and towards the end, gorgeous. 8.5/10
I really tried to like this album but it was just too repetitive. The beats were decent enough but the songs could have been cut in half. They just felt way too long.
None of these songs needed to be 5 min long.
