Reviews (page 3 of 7)
A mix between ambient, hip-hop, and electronic music. It’s like that Basement Jaxx record but less overstimulating. Like all the other dance records of its time, doesn’t really hold up to most modern music. Track Six though is pretty goofy, just not in a good way (2.5-3).
Goeie vibes, kleine ontdekking 3,5
Kind of fun.
Not bad but not good.
Electronic/house music with some rap in between. Fun listen, obscure inclusion in the book. I would listen to more from them.
pretty nice
Fine to listen to at work, but nothing amazing - and that’s despite me being into electronic music. I’ll round down to 3*.
Don't Go Nowhere
I had a different diatribe originally written for this album, but by the time it ended, I actually changed my tune. This is a unique and experimental album that starts a little bland and generic with the 2000s electronic feel, but eventually blossoms into some tracks that feel very melodic and intentional. I won’t rate it that high because the beginning is still kind of a drag, but it’s better than I expected and I wish there was more detail explaining the production and choice of making it onto the list.
Not too bad.
I listened while doing yoga, thats a good pair. I work in a wine shop, great shop music. I'm not so outraged at this being included. If we are thinking about canon in the music world perhaps this does not measure up to greatest of all time, but I think it does exist as a proper example of a genre and time. And its a good album, a good representative album..
Lots of beats sharply observed
Day 302 Nice to get someone I’ve never heard of before, reminds me a little of lo fidelity all stars. Fine but not one I’ll return to Highlights Sone kind of Kink The rough and the quick
Mostly instrumental and mostly quite good.
I was not at all familiar with Red Snapper before, but I enjoyed the album and would certainly listen again. Something about acid jazz tickles my brain, so I was happy to find a group so heavy in that genre.
Intresting album that just missed the 4 mark for me. Great soundscape and intresting for sure but not as blown away by it as some other albumns.
This one is not really in my wheelhouse. I certainly enjoyed parts, but have to admit I didn’t really get it. Decent though. Feeling a 3 here.
Ok, well that first song promised a lot that the rest of the album didn't really deliver on. Keeping Pigs Together really felt like I was gonna get some trip hop infused post rock (and that sounds like a combo that'd be AMAZING). Honestly fantastic track. Then most of the rest of the track list kinda veered more towards if The Prodigy and Jamiroquai had a baby with a jazz band. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not my speed. Sometimes it tracks more towards a sound like the first track, like on Don't Go Nowhere. Still a little bit of the acid jazz on that one, but not enough to take me out. Other times you get something like The Rough and the Quick which... woof those lyrics are bad. I'm not against sexual lyrics, but the vocals just aren't working here. It's coming off as way too try hard and honestly a little trashy/porny. The moaning at the end of the track doesn't help. And the rest of the track list is kinda back and forth between those two vibes. So overall, OK album. Would prefer a whole album of stuff like Keeping Pigs Together over what is actually here though.
I'd compare it to a friendly chat with an acquaintance at a party. Polite, but nothing to write home about. It didn't offend, but it certainly didn't make me want to rush back and tell all my friends either. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Keeping Pigs Together - Don't Go Nowhere - Bussing
You gotta admit those last couple songs were kinda cool
Kind of tea
I remember getting my hopes up about one of these guys' records, on the strength of a Melody Maker review, then feeling a bit underwhelmed when I had a chance to actually pick up a copy for myself. This follows a similar trajectory: I wanted to like it but the reality mostly felt pretty flat. Somewhere on the more sensible end of the big beat spectrum. Hints of David Holmes. A pinch of Nightmares On Wax. Tunes that, to be fair, probably sounded great on bar sound systems around town 25 years ago before heading on to a club. Less engaging now, on earphones while walking a dog on a bright spring evening.
This band is so unheard of that their Wikipedia and Spotify tagline is that they appear on the 1001 album list. That's it. There were some good moments but on the whole it was trying to do too much and ultimately ended up an album between genres (rap, hip-hop, triphop, ambient). It was not terrible to listen to but I am absolutely not going to find out more about them or listen again. Shellback sounded like they wanted to be Portishead and then it progressed to tacky hip hop. i did quite like the ambient end. Belladonna and they're hanging me out were the standout track. 2.5 stars
Pretty funky, each song had quite a different vibe! Enjoyed listening to this on the plane back from Switzerland
#137/1001 🇬🇧 My first (and second) time listening to this album, although i have other music by them. I enjoyed it on the whole but nothing really stood out to me. Preferred the instrumental tracks largely. Best Tracks: Keeping Pigs Together, Shellback, They're Hanging Me Tonight.
A fun record for sure. A bit of a strange inclusion on the list, but it’s an interesting mix of trip hop, house, and sample-based pop. Not sure how often I’ll come back, but glad I heard it.
- fun! - track 6 so freaky - i like the end of the album
This is a vibe. Mostly instrumental. When there are vocals the lyrics don’t add much. Sounds like the soundtrack to an R rated movie. I Stole Your Car is the highlight for me. Love the dub step feel. Could have done without the explicit verse on “The Rough and The Quick”. Warning: unless you want to answer some pretty specific questions, don’t play that one in the car with your kids!
Our aim is to listen and be satisfied.
It was ok I guess. It would work as background music when I’m doing other things.
This is a fine album overall. I enjoyed having it on while working, it makes for really solid background music. Nothing here really stands out as great, but there are plenty of enjoyable laid-back grooves throughout.
Didn’t really do anything for me and it was a weird mix of being meaningless background noice and then occasionally sounding like Portishead. Didn’t rock my world…
Another electronic dance album. Really only thing I could write since it wasn’t that unique to me
I would have liked this more without the vocal tracks. Also, a techno album coming up immediately after Daft Punk is likely always going to sound inferior.
Some tracks stand out. Enjoyable for the year it came out. Never heard of them before
Removed Album #31 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) From the Vault #13 (March 26, 2026) Another day, another ex-album for me to comb through. I've never heard of this album or artist before, but this artwork is pretty sweet. There's nothing this can be other than an electronic album, right? Aside from "A Grand Don't Come for Free", I haven't listened to a piece of music with a nocturnal, urban album cover which didn't wind up being some subdued electronic music. I'm hoping this will be more of the same - that style and aesthetic is definitely up my alley. Here goes. Not quite what I was expecting, but the music is nocturnal all the same. There's some good moments packed in here, but man if it isn't shaky. Truth be told, it's difficult for me not to draw comparisons between this album and Machine Says Yes by FC/Kahuna. For context, Machine Says Yes is another UK, largely instrumental electronic album released around the early 2000s which roots itself in similar nocturnal sylings as this album. It's a middling album save for its one stand-out track (Hayling), which is absolutely fantastic. While I do think the album is objectively mediocre, I like it quite a bit. Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. It's an album where you can make your own fun envisioning all of the nightlife scenery that accompanies the music. I also like to think to think of it as a bit of a concept album, where each track represents a successive hour of the night, beginning at 7 PM and ending sometime around 5 AM (this is going off of the original UK track listing and not the jumbled American track list that is on streaming). As evidenced by the professional dissertation I have just written about Machine Says Yes, I get quite a bit of mileage out of that album relative to what the music is. A visceral reaction I don't at all get from listening to this. A shame, as I do think it has potential. There are a few moments in here that are competent, notably the trip-hop percussion, layered synths and funky bass lines. I just don't think the music materialises into anything which hooks me. It doesn't capture any feelings, places or experiences in particular, which I think is essential when you're making a nocturnal album. Still, there are good cuts. I like the Silent Hill-esque "Don't Go Nowhere". "Bussing" is a pretty good song - best one of the album. It's that one rare moment where everything came together, which is surprising when considering how disparate the influences are. "Belladonna" sounds like an early lo-fi track. Big fan of the backing ambience, and the acoustic guitar and blinking electronic tones ground the track quite nicely. It's also funny that one of the only vocal tracks on this album is a gratuitous description of oral sex. I mean, come on. Is that all you have to say for yourself, Mr. Red Snapper? Overall, this was an alright listen. Definitely up my alley, but I just wish it were something more. This album was, tragically, removed from the list and it's my job to figure out why. Let's see. Included in the original 1001 lineup and pulled from either the 2013 or 2016 editions of the book (I don't have a scan of 2013). A good run - way longer than I was expecting this album to last. The book entry says that this album "...introduces a wealth of musical tastes [...] and a pioneering combination of electronica and acoustic instruments." The curator of this album really liked that one song about sucking and fucking. They summarised the album as "...sexy, confrontational and mesmerizing". Wikipedia has fuck all on this album aside from it being in the book and being liked by a handful of critics. It did alright on the national charts too, peaking at no. 78 in the UK. So, why was this album removed? These guys just aren't prominent enough. This album is the only one of theirs to even have a Wikipedia article, which I imagine is coasting by purely on the 1001 Albums cred. Regardless, I'm favourable to this album. Like I said earlier, nocturnal songs are an interesting make of music, though I sadly don't know of any nocturnal albums which stick the landing. We'll keep this one as a placeholder. I cosign this inclusion and graciously save it from the album shredder.
Was not real impressed. Different but not outstanding,
I liked it.
++: Some Kind of Kink, Don't Go Nowhere, The Rake, The Rough and the Quick, Alaska Street, Belladonna +: Keeping Pigs Together, Bussing, They're Hanging Me Tonight +-: Shellback, I Stole Your Car 7,0/10
The music is interesting, but no big deal.
Good.
This one was neat. For the most part I preferred the instrumental tracks, especially the opener and closer. The rap parts (or whatever MC Det is trying to do) and samples kinda ruined the flow for me. The mood of this is really nice, it fits the album cover perfectly. The rest of them didn’t stand out too much. Favorite track: Shellback
Great background music while cleaning your house.
I liked this quite a bit, some more Prodigy style danceable songs and then the last two, Belladonna and They're Hanging Me Tonight, which I saved to one of my playlists with similar vibes.
6/10 - Good background electronic music with a 90s vibe
"racing game lobby music"/"rap sample type beat" but kinda better
Not bad, actually. Worked its way nicely into the background of my workday. Probably won't return to this, but it was chill and had a few tracks that I enjoyed.
Listened to a lot electronica at the time, particularly Warp releases. Red Snapper was never a favourite. Its the sort of cafe background electronica that doesn't do much for me. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No 65/2645(24%) Will I get: No
Lots of my friends really like the band Thievery Corporation. I suspect Thievery Corporation really like Red Snapper. I will tell my friends to check out Red Snapper, as I think they will really like them. For me, though, they're stuck in a middle ground between stuff I like. Not weird enough for electronic music, too present for ambient music. So like with Thievery Corporation, my response is: "yeah it's fine".
interesting album. the first few tracks seem to be the best and make good background music to listen to while working, assuming your job is being a hacker or getaway driver from a late-90s action movie. by track 6, the rough and the quick, it became clear that this was supposed to be A Sexy Album and any built-up goodwill was immediately lost. am i the only one who doesn't want to listen to graphic songs about people fuckin at 8 AM? it's all over these 90s albums and really breaks the immersion imo. i know you had to wait 30 seconds for a sexy jpeg to load over dial-up, but come on. anyway, the rest of the album is boring af. 3 stars babey!!! favorites: keeping pigs together, some kind of kink, shellback, don't go nowhere
Oh come on! A. Who the fuck are these guys? And B. Why are they on this list? Answer: I don't know and I don't know. Pretty good album but off this list with you.
Perfectly serviceable.
3.4 2x enjoyable
I usually rate electronic music on a scale of how bad it is for you, not that any of it is really good for you, tho the best of it should have at least some restorative effects, e.g., Massive Attack, Chemical Bros. Like, it should be more than background music - you know, it should get INSIDE your body - but I don't want it to be so immersive that there's no critical distance - it's still a mediated product. At this level, Our Aim Is To Satisfy succeeds. The drums are heavy, the grooves are suggestive, the cerebellum is relaxed but tuned-in. At another level, however, this is not a success, which has simply to do w/ the fact that the music isn't very good. Not bad - just that quality that's impossible to write about, i.e., unmemorable. Featureless I think 'tis.
Acid jazz feels like a genre that was important enough to be on the list, but I can't necessarily think of any specific artist who deserves a place. So I guess Red Snapper is as good as anyone. "The Rough and the Quick" deserves extra points for explicitly covering female pleasure. Overall, it's a nice enough album, but not particularly exciting. Good for background music.
They did a decent job of meeting their aim. It was fine. Some good tracks. Some not so much.
pretty chill, this and l4d
I was partially satisfied so I suppose they can pat themselves on the back.
This works for me more when it's entirely instrumental or the vocals are minimised. The end of the album picks up for me.
Today’s album is an interesting mix of trip hop and big beat that is absolutely of its time. I want to score this well because you can hear the live elements in each tracks - but the album lacks either singles, or a cohesive concept album theme. At the times where this is not simple big beat (in the style of fat boy slim) OR lounge jazz infused trip hop. At those times - you have trip hop with purpose - and the talent of the musicians shines through. Too rare though. Low 3
An interesting mix of flavours that you wouldn’t usually put together but definitely work and come together as a unique, cohesive sound. Red Snapper have seemed to find a route through to a totally new take on trip hop which I’m partial to. There isn’t a particular track that I’m drawn to - the album lacks a stand out moment. I must also admit that some of the lyrics set me on edge a bit, but maybe I’m being prudish.
Going high 3 on Red Snapper, not all to my tastes but some great stuff on hear and love the mix of styles
Decent album with some interesting, if not lyrically provocative tracks.
An interesting if uneven trip-hop/acid jazz instrumental record that succeeds in a lot of ways, but falls victim to repetitiveness issues as a lot of instrumental albums do. Peaked with the first song and never recapture that sound, but was unique enough to keep me interested for the runtime. Top tracks: Keeping Pigs Together, The Rake, Bussing
This is by no means the greatest electronic music album I've ever listened to, but the reviews would have you believe this is barely more than a random arrangement of noises. If you can't even appreciate the beats on some of these songs, I fear that says more about you than it does the music.
I enjoyed the songs with MC Det - Some Kind of Kink and I Stole Your Car, can see adding those playlists. The rest of the album was... ok. Not a lot left to the imagination when it comes to a top shelf night.
It's varied and different.
Nice steady vibe all the way through. Plenty of other stuff I'd reach for first, but this is a good enough ride.
When the Wikipedia page basically only mentions the fact this album is in the "1001 Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die" books, you know that's bad news. However, this one caught me off guard. It's another album that overstays its welcome, but it's fairly good early 2000s club music. Favorite Track: "Shellback".
I don't get it. 3*
Cool electronic album. Very fitting for its era and some really cool production
Seemed fine for clubbing background music
Монотонно, скучновато. Вайб музыки из Квартирного вопроса и примерочной Зары. В конце неплохо, последние два трека приятные.
This is the music you’d hear in an edgy advert in that plays before the trailers in the cinema in the late 90s/2000s
It's not terrible, but it's not amazing either. I don't really see how this is considered one of the albums you MUST hear before you die, but it had a few good tracks
Cool and funky beats. Very emblematic of British crime movie soundtracks.
i wouldn't normally listen to this but it did go off as a soundtrack to my programming work + making me feel like a cool hacker
Most of this album was a noughties house album, sort of a mix of groove armada and massive attack. A lot of it sounded like advert music. Not really my thing. The penultimate track belladonna was brilliant, had this great light washy repetitive main riff. Sounded like American Football. The last track was darker and while not quite as good, still very enjoyable. A 5 track, a 4 track and a bunch of 2s. Probably rounds out to a 3.
Some Kind Of Kink sounds like it belongs in the background to a 2000s football video game advert. Belladonna was very different to the other tracks on the album, a good thing. Not overly sure this should be on the list - pretty straight down the line house/trip-hop. Favourite track is definitely Keeping Pigs Together, it has a lot more urgency than the rest and is pretty funky. Overall the album has less to say than Massive Attack - Heligoland still my go-to for best electronica. Red Snapper is a brilliant name for a band though.
Pretty cool, loved the incision of double bass in some songs. Cool vibe, really enjoyable while listening but because there’s no real hooks it’s hard to come back to. Cool anyway to have something a bit different
One of solid examples of the 2000s acid jazz / trip hop scene, but in a way just one of many.
Album 53 Top 3 favorites off the album: Alaska Street, Belladonna, Keeping Pigs Together House party music. I can think of the exact people I know who would put this on. To be clear, it is not clubbing music; it has that specific LED strip lights, weed and vape scented, light on above the kitchen sink in an apartment with carpeted floor in beige feeling. Generally speaking, I like that vibe. I prefer to listen to it with other people, though. Nothing huge to say about this.
There is nothing mind-blowing about this album, but it has fairly decent sampling work throughout. For trip-hop, it isn't too bad.
This was my first time hearing Red Snapper, and I think I really enjoyed it. Although I had to give it two full listens to be sure. It’s still growing on me a bit. That said, it would make fantastic soundtrack music. I’d definitely recommend it as background music for a chill gathering or relaxed hangout.
It’s fine as background music.
Bit uneven but not an over represented genre. Pleasant enough in general and good musical impacts.
Pretty good vibes, better when there were no guest vocalists. A lot of electronica around in the 00s and not especially sure this offers much more than the rest. I recognise that it being live instruments, a double bass for instance being used is quite unique but there are other bands to do similar, Fingathing were one that comes to mind with double bass and DJ. Albums in the electronic category like these also come at the expense of losing other important albums in the genre or edge of the genre, so always feels a bit of a shame.
This album had some good beats
Liked slightly more than I expected to Fave song - the rough and the quick
I have a love/hate relationship with albums like this. I don't mind instrumental music and, more often than not, enjoy listening. However, in this setting, where I'm going through the task of experiencing all these albums, most of which I have never listened to, 5-6 min songs seem laborious. Even though I working, I still feel like, "Ok, I get the point of this song, next." but there's still 4 mins to go. 100% on me and the setting I'm in, which should not bear upon the artist.
Skip 'the rough and the quick' if family are with you. Apart from that it was pretty nice. Not sure there's anything to make me rush back, no solid hooks or vibes that got under my skin. But good background music, so long as guests aren't present, so, kinda meaningless.
"Shellback" was the standout, and the one that I'd listen to again. "Keeping Pigs Together", and "Don't Go Nowhere" had a nice groove to them. The rest were meandering and forgettable. And the ones with "guest" artists didn't do a thing for me at all.
I don’t think I get it 3/5
Good music and interesting. Lyrics rather incidental and mostly annoying.
This record definitely has a time and place...
188/1089 VERY 2000s chill vibes, i’m so here for this. It had some… interesting moments. I’m not 100% sure how much i’d come back to this, it very much feels like background music in a nice way but there are other albums that sort of fill this niche for me faves: alaska street, belladonna, keeping pigs together, shellback, don’t go nowhere, bussing, i stole your car, they’re hanging me tonight 69/100
I feel conflicted rating these stupid British electronica albums this list is riddled with. They're not bad (with the exception of Darkdancer, which is so bad it's good), but they're just so unnecessary. I enjoyed listening to this, but I can't imagine anybody finding the solution to the meaning of life to this.
It’s been a lot of the same this week. This is ok.
nice...
Nice jazzy electronic music, some good songs here and pretty good production but like only every other song was good
I see how it was good for the time, but has t aged well
Bara nokkuð góð plata, eins og plata með instrúmental lögum sem eru að lágmarki 5 mínútur getur verið.
Started off so strong and then ??
Like this. Brings back memories from uni. Some great beats and good to listen to whilst working
Perfectly fine. This is like if the soundtrack to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines if it took place in Brighton.
Surprisingly good. It’s repetitive, but the repetitions are pretty nice. The atmosphere is great, and there’s a lot of variety. There’s a bunch of cool melodies, and occasional vocals also worked well. Wasn’t expecting to like this, but although there isn’t anything impressive about here, this album is quite enjoyable. 7/10
Is this album a Led Zeppelin joke? I know nothing of this, but it's giving Indie or Dance vibes. I was correct - this is a dance album, but more experimental and Indie than commercial and club-oriented. And what lyrics there are follow the saucy 'ooh matron' vibe of the artist and album name. The first song is pretty good and the rest are fine. Most songs are a tad overlong given the inherent repetitive nature of the genre, but not excessively so. It's not as bad as the one stare reviews or the overall average overall score would suggest - those reviews mostly by people who unironically enjoy Country 'music' - but I can't in good conscience give it a four to even the average out. It's a solid three star album, but nobody needs to hear it before, or after, they die.
This was alright. Pretty good. Not bad. Might be the first time I've heard the word clit used in a song, and I feel like that's a plus. 3.65
Maybe my understanding of early 2000 music has been calibrated correctly because this is EXACTLY what I expected. Was hoping to be proven wrong with catchier beats or a more unique sound.
dobro, solidno, ali ipak ništa posebno. na kraju krajeva nije nešto što bih si pustio, ali mogu cijeniti unutar podžanra, šta god da je ovo
Kinda cool I guess (except for "The Rough and the Quick" WTF was that)
Liked some disliked some didnt really move me
interesting...
Listening to this album, I'm wondering if this was the kind of sound played in UK clubs at the time. Hearing it on my phone while riding the train in Japan, it felt more like a film soundtrack than a set of distinct songs, and individual tracks didn’t really stick with me. Of course, all music is influenced by context, but this kind of sound feels especially dependent on its environment, which made it hard for me to fully engage with it.
It's sometimes interesting, sometimes good, sometimes aggravating, sometimes annoying. "I Stole your Car" is probably the most interesting song, and what I like about fusion genres. Nothing on this album feels complete. It's a bunch of good ideas scrambled together. Sometimes they stretch nothing into a full song, sometimes they cram too much in. I can't call it good, but it's not boring.
Pretty nice Trip Hop music. This is not my favourite style but it’s ok to listen to.
solid 3, good stuff
Pretty good. Chill
More electronic music. Okay.
Feels like a low budget Steven Soderburgh film. Vaguely intriguing background atmosphere, not an album I'd revisit. Shellback is a pretty good track.
Spy movie ass music 3/5
Rätt simpelt men precis på rätt sida av helt ok. Skön rytm. Det låter som ett soundtrack. Men mer ok än tidigare liknande varianter.
Stabil trea.
Certainly see the appeal. However the album does not hit me over the course of multiple songs
I love the name and how it can be interpreted like they want to satisfy their listeners if taken alone or like a hive mind mantra "Our Aim Is to Satisfy Red Snapper." I expected this to be more like electronica than it is, and I actually find it much more interesting than I do electronica. I enjoyed this and would listen again. Acid jazz is pretty cool. 3.5/5 but I reserve the right to raise this score on future listens.
halfway
This definitely started out as video game music and I was very worried. But it mellowed nicely mid-album and finished with some strong chill-out tracks. The instrumental vibes were a solid foundation with nice grooves and soundscapes but the vocals add nothing but annoyance. A good album for driving long distances or having on in the background while working around the house. If your paying attention to it, it will disappoint, but if you let it wash over you gently, there’s something to be said for it, especially the second half.
Better than bad, but otherwise anonymous. Standard beep boopery from the early 2000s and I certainly never needed to hear it, but not mad I did. Actually, the last two songs are great. Shame about the first 9.
I don't think this album deserves as much hate as its been getting in the reviews here, though I appreciate that music without lyrics can be looked down upon, especially in this genre with many considering it "not real music". Looking at the album cover felt like a big part of the experience with this one, as you can imagine a plethora of action/urban scenarios unfolding to this. Digging up the commentary from the 1001 Albums book for this, it states that the albums inclusion is largely because of it's attempt to create something new by bringing in various genres such as dub, acid jazz and disco beats; not everyone understands experimental music, regardless of whether traditional instruments or technology is used. Admittedly, the album shines brightest when lyrics are introduced. "Shellback" became an instant favourite, with lyrics delivered in a seductive voice and backed by heavy acid beats which feel very reminiscent of the early 2000s where this album was released. "The Rough and the Quick" is probably one of the better sexually explicit songs I've heard, with most being a rapper parading their self-inflated egos around for 4+ minutes. The scratchy vinyl sounds, repetitive bass and guitar really delivers the spy/heist visualization. "I stole your car" had great and playful energy and sits almost starkly amongst all other tracks on the album. "Belladonna" was simply gorgeous, with it's dreamy beats and xylophone. Overall, this is another album I enjoyed, but can understand where it's criticisms come from, as this genre is notorious for often repeating 1-2 fixed sounds throughout a track overlaid on a mix of harmonies that can come off simply as a garbled mess of noise.
Olipaha tärinää
Ihan jees taustamusaa!
This was pretty cool. Definitely early 2000s electronic music, but I didn't find it annoying or uninteresting.
This one was another one that was pleasant to have on in the background, but any amount of active listening to this left me bored. It's quite a vibe for work when i'm typing away though. i didn't dislike it, but i also didn't like it too much. i will probably never listen to it again.
Really enjoy this downtempo and grimy era of electronic music. A few bangers, a few duds on this one. The range of house, hip-hop, and more ambient stuff along with the solid use of samples is probably what landed them on this list.
I vibe with this...sorta? There are better electronic albums that aren't on this list, so I slightly resent it for that.
Not among the trip-hop GOATs, but a solid one to work to. I’m glad this genre is pretty well represented here. Strong strong 3
decent
Another album I'd have never heard if it wasn't for this list. Neither this band nor this album were on my radar at all. I'm glad I listened to it, but I probably wouldn't listen to it again. It's got a good groove, but it's not my genre of choice.
This surprised me a bit. I was not expecting it to be so “punchy”? (If that’s the right word) I enjoyed it though, some good grooves and some good vibes.
странные ребята. иногда внезапно хорни (или мне приснилось?). не моя музыка (для фона не работает т. к. иногда настойчиво начинают повторять одно и то же), но и не отвратительно...
Didn't expect much going in, first two tracks reminded me of something out of the early 2000's movie Human Traffic where I'm British, rounding up my friend for a rave party. Third track Shellback was phenomenal. About a minute in, it turns into a banger. Every track with MC Det was a let down. Favorite tracks: Shellback, The Rough and Quick, Alaskan Street The Rough and the Quick put me through a loop Overall, very original, sounding fairly fresh considering it came out in the year 2000 *Conan O'Brien's voice* IYKYK Super high 3, not quite. 4 3/5 Stars
This album starts very well with a track that sets a very dark and eerie tone which gets ruined by the following tracks. It goes from a nice cold atmosphere to very uninteresting, boring and very repetitive songs that can feel long and tiresome. 'Some Kind of Kink', 'Shellback' and 'The Rake' feautre these very annoying vocal chops or samples which are hard to listen to. 'I Stole your Car' and 'The Rough and the Quick' have some very repetitive vocal melodies with the last one getting absurdly obnoxious. From 'Alaska Street' to the end of the project, it gets very decent. The mentioned song has a nice chord progression which is followed by some beautiful and relaxing horns in the next track, 'Belladonna'. Overall, a very inconsistent album, but I'm not giving it a bad score because I think the electronic base of the worst tracks are a bit decent.
I liked - most of this. There were a few they could have left off, but it was good background music to do some Photoshop work to. Will check out more of them after listening to this.
Was very much taken surprise by the randomly explicit song, so much so that it actually made me laugh. In general, this is just very British trip hop/electronica, and there is already so much of that on this list. That being said, I didn't hate it, and it was a good enough soundtrack for a long drive, but I also don't think it needs to be on this list.
Better than Coldplay
Like a lot! Feels like perfect music to code to. But some songs are jarring and don’t necessarily flow. I’ll return to this one
The 90s - gone are the days of hallucinogen fueled psych rock bands, in are the minimalistic electronic experiments. For what it's worth, I really don't hate the simplicity of this album. It doesn't try to shock and awe (except for that one song) and instead provides ample breathing space to quietly float along at its own pace. That said, I bet DVD menu designers were crawling over themselves to license some of these songs. All in all it's pretty good. Deserving of a proper co sidered listen.
Interesting electronics/trip-hop
Couple good songs. Rest is whatever.
This album did not appeal to me and was a tough listen. Any music that makes me feel like it could have been in The Matrix just doesn't land right on my ears.
pretty cool trip hop for the first couple of songs. that one song with sex lyrics and moaning REALLY ruins this album though. the back half of the album is weaker than the first half.
Nothing bad here, nothing inherently exceptional either. A good dynamic showcase of electronic music with solid MC features and well designed rhythm sections. I’m not sure this pushed or expanded a genre, but nonetheless tolerable.
Pretty good range on here, given that I’m not really familiar with early 00s electronica and I started to get away from feeling that “every song sounds the same.” Not sure that I will listen again, but it certainly felt like an inspired work.
Decent for what it is but I didn’t pay too much attention. Kind of a funkier massive attack. High 3.
Yeeeah, grand.
I spent yesterday assembling cheap IKEA furniture. This album was suitable background music.
3.5 stars
Did a triple take at a certain song's lyrics.
I liked this well enough (The Rough and The Quick was a standout), even if so e of it was a bit backgroundy. Some was a bit like a less good Massive Attack.
I’ve never heard of Red Snapper before, and now that I’m over 950 albums into this project, I’ve found myself growing more and more leery of electronica music. I think I came into this project with a really narrow view of electronica music, and its thrown me for a loop when I’ve come across albums that don’t fit the definition that I’d had in my head for so long. Hopefully though, Red Snapper will win me over! Our Aim is to Satisfy was a unique, but very uneven experience. The use of so many keyboards and different bass elements helped craft this album’s unique sound, but I found a lot of the looped vocal refrains to be a bit annoying. Some of the songs were smooth, but I found some of the songs to be a bit abrasive, and I felt like the album switched between the two at a moment’s notice. “Keeping Pigs Together” had a really good groove to it, with some great bass playing, and a very catchy main melody. However, the very next track, “Some Kind of Kink” started off with a bass riff that reminded me of Seinfeld, which was really jarring and goofy. To top it off, I didn’t care much for the vocal elements on that song either. The percussion and bass on “Shellback” sounded great together, and it had some excellent keyboards as well, but once again, I really didn’t like the vocals at all. Those first three tracks were pretty much a microcosm of the whole album for me. There would be a track that I liked, but the next two wouldn’t really be my speed, and some would be pretty good musically, but feature vocals that I didn’t like. However, the last three tracks of the album were fantastic, and easily the best part of the whole experience. “Alaska Street” had a cold feeling to it that I liked, and it segued perfectly into “Belladonna,” which was a really gentle and beautiful song. The album’s last track, “They’re Hanging Me Tonight” was really beautiful too, and an excellent way to close out the album. If the whole album would have been more like those last three tracks, this would have probably been a five-star album for me. Before I finish up my review, I think I need to talk about “The Rough and the Quick.” I was probably about halfway through the song before I realized what this song was about when I heard the line “lick my clit, rub a little bit of your spit.” I’m not a prude or anything, but that came out of nowhere, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Kudos to Red Snapper for making my eyes bug out as I listened to that song. When it comes to electronic music, I think I’ll stick to my comfort Daft Punk albums and pass on the Red Snapper.
Considère me satisfied. Also the clit song 👀👀
*Our Aim Is To Satisfy* (2000) by British band Red Snapper is an album that blends electronic music with live instrumentation, creating a tense and funky soundscape. Critical reception was mixed, with some praising its innovative style and others finding it dated or monotonous. | **Aspect** | **Summary** | | :--- | :--- | | **Overall Sound** | A fusion of electronic beats, live funk bass, and guitars, often described as a "dark funk" or a soundtrack for urban Britain. | | **Musical Style** | Trip-hop, breakbeat, and funk, with elements of ambient, dub, and jazz. | | **Lyrics & Vocals** | A mix of instrumental tracks and songs with vocals. Lyrical themes include explicit sexuality and dark, violent imagery. | | **Production** | Known for its sharp, varied sounds, though some critics find the live drum and bass sound limiting compared to fully electronic production. | | **Themes & Influence** | Creates a mood of darkness, tension, and release. Its influence is debated; some find it a time capsule of its era. | ### 🎧 Pros and Cons **Pros:** * **Unique Sound:** The blend of acoustic instruments within an electronic framework was distinctive. Tracks like "Some Kind of Kink" are noted as "dancefloor killers". * **Dynamic Range:** The album is praised for its varied moods and sonic textures, flowing smoothly from atmospheric instrumentals to funkier vocal tracks. * **Bold Artistic Choices:** The explicit and humorous lyrics of "The Rough and the Quick" were seen by some as a brave and memorable expression of female sexuality. **Cons:** * **Polarizing Vocals:** The use of British-accented rapping and vocoders (described as a "Donald Duck style vocorder") can be divisive. * **Criticized Rhythm Section:** Some critics argue the live drums and acoustic bass can sound monotonous and were a limitation, with a preference for more digital production. * **Dated Sound:** A common criticism is that the album feels very "of-its-time" and hasn't aged as well as other electronic works from the same period. *Our Aim Is To Satisfy* is an album of its time that successfully fused genres but also embodies the stylistic limitations of its era. It may particularly appeal to you if you are a fan of innovative trip-hop and late-90s electronic music.
I was really excited after hearing the first track. It sounded like a really cool electro-2000s thing. An MC came in on track two and I lost interest. It took me back to 2001, I remember there was a lot of this sort of thing on radio. While my ears perked up at different points throughout (the last two songs were really cool), I wasn't buying it. 3 stars.
I genuinely had no clue what I was getting into with this album because the Wikipedia page for it had no genre listed, the Spotify version of the album is named incorrectly and the band’s current most popular track has artwork that looks like approximately two dollars were spent on it. That said, Our Aim Is to Satisfy actually isn’t bad. As a first exposure to Red Snapper, it left a decent impression on me. There were a fair few highlights, like "Keeping Pigs Together" (which sounds like the theme to an early 2000s spy flick that doesn’t exist), the more ambient-leaning "Belladonna" and the jaw-dropping closer "They’re Hanging Me Tonight." On paper, OAITS is an album I should love – trip hop with jazz influences, repetitive dance structures and occasional rap vocals is honestly right up my alley. Some of the songs just got so tiring so quickly or didn’t quite hook me as much as I hoped. While I can’t see myself coming back to this one in its entirety anytime soon, Our Aim Is to Satisfy got its hooks deep enough in my that I’m definitely curious to check out some more Red Snapper! They’ve got a new album that came out just a few months ago (and appears to be a bit more jazzy), so maybe I’ll start there. Highlights: Keeping Pigs Together, Some Kind of Kink, The Rake, Alaska Street, Belladonna, They’re Hanging Me Tonight
It's alright.
I had never heard of Red Snapper before, so Our Aim Is To Satisfy was a completely fresh listen. At first it felt a little outside my comfort zone, but it quickly won me over as an engaging, inventive, and surprisingly entertaining record. What makes this album stand out is the way it fuses electronic music with influences from metal, hip-hop, rock, and jazz. That blend keeps things fresh and unpredictable, and when the vocals do appear, they give the tracks an extra edge. It’s an album full of inventive sounds and textures, constantly shifting without losing its flow. Favourite track: Don’t Go Nowhere and Shellback were excellent, but The Rake with MC Det’s vocals was the real highlight. Least favourite track: Nothing felt skippable, though Alaska Street and They’re Hanging Me Tonight didn’t leave much of a mark. Album artwork: The cover is fantastic—bold and perfectly suited to the adventurous sound inside.
Es un álbum muy psicodélico. Mucha música, poca lírica. Una canción me gustó.
Not terrible but kind of unmemorable. It's definitely of its time and probably not worthy of inclusion in this list, but there are worse albums.
3.5/5
Not expecting much from the reviews but can instantly hear the references to it being a heist soundtrack! 🎬 Red Snapper starring Guy Ritchie. Out Now 🎬 Actually enjoyed it more than I expected from the reviews. Although still not amazing - can get quite repetitive at times and a bit rough. Multiple times checked the track time thinking it had been 7 minutes or something, but actually 3. Not much exploration beyond the basic loop and “hook” of each song. Very much captures the feel and sound of the 2000s, but musically, just ok. Scrapes a 3
Nice beats, nice noises but felt a bit samey after a while.
Great mood music! Certain songs need several deeper listens
Ups and downs with this one. Some great moments and some boring ones. A little bit repetitive at times, some tracks could be tightened up a bit in my opinion. Love the variation in styles and moods. An eclectic mix of instrumentation works out relatively interesting for the most part. Really liked Bussing, not so much I Stole Your Car. Alastair Street is class, Belladonna meh. Favourite track - Bussing. 7/10
Like living in a late 90's David Fincher movie.
felt like i was walking on the NYC street in a 2000s action movie
Started strong but overstayed its welcome
Kind of Moby vibes? I didn't mind it - good background music with the occasional sample or loop that was a bit ear catching.
Interesting trip hop, and I have never heard of these guys. I guess I was out of the game around this time, but I still should've heard their previous albums because that's when I was in the game. Although, trip hop isn't something I listen to often, I did enjoy this one. Don't Go Nowhere was a favorite. Good night driving music. Good grooves. I'll give this a 3.
I was pleasantly surprised with this one.
Mostly chill instrumentals sprinkled with female vocals and a few low key male raps. I don't think I'd consider this a MUST listen...I don't regret listening to it, just wouldn't seek it out again.
Thoughts before listening: Never heard of it even though it came out in my college years. I'd guess either British alt rock or some sort of electronic dance music. Review: So this is trip hop so I guess I was close. I definitely knew this scene existed but it was just never really my thing. This is okay. Cool atmospheric production on these songs that remind me of the background music in some post apocalyptic sci-fi movie from the early 2000s. I will say that this does a better job of keeping my interest than many similar groups. There is some nice instrumentation here, and I like the songs with vocals like "The Rake. Overall, I'd give this 3-stars.
Some really really great songs, but the album remains bloated. A few songs should've been cut to make a much tighter and much better project. Still excellent.
Surprised to see this "cult" acid jazz / trip hop album in the list, I totally had this burned on an mp3 CD back in the day. It's kind of like Massive Attack but a bit higher BPM. Nothing amazing, but very well produced and great background / session music.
Solid 3.5. Some of the songs were fun, but I found it very grating past the midway point 😬
Didn’t hate it, but I’m not sure why it’s on this list
Experemental? Yeah, sorta. Cool? Kinda. Vibey? For sure. Do I think it would be worth listening again? Nope. I didn't find anything inherently wrong with this album, but it just didn't blow me away in any way. It was perfect for background music at work, however.
decent sounds like a soundtrack to something like persona
Sweet trip hop record. There is a diverse set of sounds on this record, ranging from upbeat to mellow. I enjoyed the dance-ier tracks. Favourite Track(s): Alaska Street Least Favourite Track(s): The Rough And The Quick
This feels like a soundtrack album begging for a movie to back. Not all the tracks grab your attention but honestly this kind of album gets played a lot by me to help me work. If put on "Spiders from Mars" I wouldn't get any work done because that demands to be listened to. There are enough "grab your attention" Tracks to knock you out of your grind, so you can catch your breath and refocus; "The Rake" & They're Hanging Me Out Tonight" are two examples. It's an album of music that supports what you are doing rather than being the thing you're doing. There's a place for this in every collection.
Not bad, some good grooves and basslines. Does manage to evoke an atmosphere similar to the album cover. Not a big fan of the vocal samples though and the album does drag after a bit. Can't see this being something I'd sit and listen to regularly and it seems like background music, but certainly not bad.
This has a certain nostalgia for me. I don’t actually know Red Snapper but it reminds me of the year I spent in Europe around that time. That being said I only need a track or two, not a full hour.
I'm not a fan of this genre in general, but this is one of the more palatable albums in the cannon. It the aim was to satisfy - it did.
2000 I know there's a lot of love for this, and it does exist on my shelves, but it isn't often played because it's a genre I don't often gravitate to. Can't play this in front of my daughter either. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Decent ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
It was fine. 3/5
keeping pigs together- 4 some kind of kink- 4 shellback- 3 or 4 dont go nowhere- 4 the rake- did we get an alien on this track? 4 the rough and the quick- im bored out of my mind. 4 bussing- i stole your car-
Ok
Not my cup of tea.
Like the background music they would play at a nightclub that appeals to really cool vampires.
This is a cool one
es como una mezcla de una banda de cosas, me gustó algunos temas
"Our Aim Is to Satisfy Red Snapper" is third studio long play album by British instrumental band Red Snapper. Nu jazz, acid jazz acid and trip hop are the Wiki-listed genres for the band. Yeah, they do cover a lot of style territory. The core bandmembers included David Ayers (guitar, keyboards), Ali Friend (electric bass, double bass) and Richard Thair (drums, deck). Other contributors were MC Det (vocals), Karime Kendra (vocals), Jake Williams (keyboards), Darren Morris (keyboards) and Mike Kearsy (trombone). The album had decent reviews and, commercially, reached #78 in the UK. The album begins with guitar notes, a gurgling sound, static noises and a rock beat in "Keeping Pigs Together." Repeating guitar and keyboard notes, a reverb synth and a piano slowly added as the song builds with layers (that's common with a lot of these songs). Ambient trip hop. The Pitchfork review compares this to U2's "October." OK. Oh, and the pigs are still following me. The band gets the funk out in "Some Kind of Kink." The double bass and beat. Initially a vocoder is used until MC Det takes over the vocals. Very danceable and very 70's. I guess I'm a sucker for mixing disco and duck noises and that's exactly what they do in "The Rake." A hypnotic synth and a rock-disco beat. Rapping vocals and, of course, duck noises. The closing song "They're Hanging Me Tonight" prominently features a church organ sound. Layered synths. Initially an ambient-trip hop-electronic vibe. Very atmospheric. The album covered a lot of styles: trip hop, funk, jazz-trip hop fusion (acid jazz), chill, ambient, disco, dance, hip hop, cod reggae and electronic. I really dug the beats and multiple basses. Songs can be divided into either dance or electronic-ambient groups. The dance songs had a 70's vibe. Their method of slowly building songs by adding instruments was fairly effective. This was a decent album. If you're into any type of electronic or dance music, there's something here for you.
Had never heard of these guys.
Yoooooo!!! This is my kinda shit! Love the trip-hop and electronics genres. This is the type of album I love to listen to while working or cleaning up the house. I would also put this on if I were doing a heist. lol Could’ve done without a couple songs in the record but overall dope.
A few nice songs, alternated by tracks that range from boring to mildly annoying. Most tracks overstay their welcome.
suprised at first not my thing but grew on me.
Seemed good. Need more listens
A very enjoyable listen. Helped me with being very very productive today. Is it relevant? No, not anymore. Is it good? Mweh, it's pretty good. It's from the Warp label!
ok
Cool. Something brand new to me. Feels like a mix of hip hop and post rock. Some really nice atmosphere. Not sure if there's as much movement/development as I would like? One that I'd like to return to to make my mind up clearer about it - a couple of listens in the day wasn't really enough
there's albums that do the exact same thing but better. good background muzak
Never heard of this artist. Cool stuff.
I actually enjoyed a decent amount of this. Some fun instrumentation and production.
Meh
I guess it's alright for what it is. I don't mind trip hop type stuff, but this really felt like "elevator music for people who like drugs" or something.
I had no idea who this was and have never heard any of the tracks but I enjoyed it. Will I listen again? …. Maybe, yeah.
Not my type of music but it was pretty good
beautiful trip hop album with a good amount of diversity that leans into all aspects of the genre and its influences to create a well rounded love letter to downtempo and its many forms. i love this
Some nice and some very enerving tracks.
This was as average as it comes blah blah blah late 90s early 2000s dance music. One song talked about clits. Stupid. But. It two stars bad. Just dumb that this is considered must listen music. Dumb.
Okay this was good. Trip hop is always good
Enjoyed the instrumental tracks, the ones with vocals weren't great!
Boring Trip Hop. Not for me
It doesn't bode well for an album when the only thing mentioned in the write-up is that it was included in the 1001 albums book, but this actually isn't that bad. It's maybe a bit inconsistent in terms of style, as it flits in and out of different approaches: Sometimes more down-tempo, other times kind of hip-hoppy, other times kind of weird electro.. but it mostly delivers for me. Certainly not something I'll return to, but hey, very few albums on here fit that criteria.
I'm not usually a fan of this genre, but I liked some parts here and there. I can't see myself listening to the album again in full but might return to a song or two in the future
mid in album form
Damn this project the industrial house stuff is starting to work on me.
Was alright, the rake was heat
This is an odd one. I presume I've listened to this before as I was a big Red Snapper fan in the 1990s and have their first three albums (admittedly the first is a compilation of EPs). I saw them live twice in the same weekend in 1998 and they were incredible. And yet two years later I wasn't bothered about this album. Listening now, I can kind of figure out why. There's nothing *wrong* with it, but there is no real development of the sound from 1998's 'Making Bones', with the exception of some cut up vocals as opposed to more traditional vocals and rapping, although there is some of that as well.
Not bad. It's just w duke that doesn't to much for me in general. 3/5 Album 56/1001
totally new to me, pretty interesting mostly instrumental album with a few softly spoken and often provocative spoken word parts. Dramatic and free-flowing. Kept me listening through to the end...that's saying something. 3 stars
Mostly some cool sounds and interesting but not engaging (for me) songs. The Rough And The Quick is a bit of an earworm though...
Groovy, nice background music. I agree with the guardian reviewer that called it “revved up Massive Attack” but it’s albums like this that really show how anglocentric this list is. No way would Red Snapper be on a list made in any other country, pleasant as this album is.
This is one of those albums that I liked less over time. I started out thinking it was interesting and might be one of the few mostly-instrumental albums that worked for me, but it got tedious as hell by the end of it. Not bad, but too long for something like this. 2.7
Pretty good. Starts and end well. Middle is rough.
Mildly pleasantly surprised
It's a perfectly acceptable entry into the trip-hop/d and b/coffee table/jazz stakes prevalent around the millenium. I got through a ton of emails while this burbled away in the background.
A gentle jazzy album to soundtrack my daily work. Perfectly good for that reason, not sure I'd will and urge people to repeat my experience though.
I found some of the tracks fairly enjoyable, especially the last two. It’s hard for me to compare electronic Trip hop type music to other genres
There are some interesting moments here but they are cancelled out by the boring moments. Unmemorable Seriously, why is this on here and not Massive Attacks’s Mezzanine. Or even some Zero Seven? 2.5
Like
Pretty solid and sounds very 2000. I'd go 3.5 if I could.
Have on Vinyl: No Fav Song: Bussing Note: Interesting; had not heard this before
I wanna give her that kinda night... Decent album, not really the type of album that'll catch anybody in the room with a "holy shit what was THAT!?!" track, but not a bad vibe. I don't know much about this style of music, so can't really address why this particular album would separate it from others, but I liked it.
Nice.
Atmospheric and trip hoppy with a jazz and funk twist. If you are looking for some good background music you will find it here. I'd write more, but this is another album on the list that is good but not great. How many different ways are there to say that?
a great sonic album! not for me though
Ну прикольно, но под мудик
A pretty obscure album, so much so that I don't think Spotify has the album title correct. But ended up being a fine album. Nothing that I feel I need to come back for though. 5/10
Solid sound.
Decent electronic music. Not my favorite, though. 3/5
I seem to be getting alot of electronic trance music at the moment. This one is fine but I fear blends into all the rest I've had recently
Electronicoso y divertido. No creo volver a él ni entiendo porque está en la lista, pero no me la pasé mal.
Good a bit repetitive trip hop jazz album
It was okay. I think need to give the tracks another listen before I decide to remove them from my playlist.
Not bad for trip hop. It's doing the "simple riff repeated to death" style of most trip hop from this ear, but I happen to like most of the riffs and bass lines, so I enjoyed this a decent amount. 2.8/5
Never heard this before, which is surprising. I used to have a dodgy burnt copy of Reeled And Skinned ep collection which I liked. Ok trip hop stylings. Very 2000s. Haven't listened to these guys since back in the day. There's better music from this era. Three stars.
Usually inn to repetitive jazz influenced beat stuff like this, but didn’t feel this one too hard. What I typically like about this kind of music is getting rewarded with an interesting melodic or vocal section in the track after head nodding to minutes of loops, but that didn’t really happening too much here.
I enjoyed the second half of this album more than the first. Beginning seemed more basic but more interesting choices came later. 2.75/5
I thought this was one of those albums where I don't mind the music but it's just so forgettable for whatever reason
A bit to close to MA for me
The only thing the Wikipedia says about this album is… “ Our Aim Is to Satisfy is a 2000 studio album by the band Red Snapper. It is listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.” Which kinda tells you everything you need to know. That said I thought this was OK
It snapped enjoyable but better out there.
Very different. Middle of the album flowed very well, however the start and the finish sounded out of place. Good to listen to when doing work.
Not my usual genre but very enjoyable
This is cool. But when there's a really repetitive vocal sample and I can't work out what it's saying it drives me mad. I'm sure one of them was about Steve Martin??
Sick beats
Not bad. Not great.
Mid electro
Really impressive evolution of the Trip-Hop sound born in the 90s, blending in House and Jazz elements for a really surprising listen, that doesn't really go stale given the 57 minute runtime. The bass and drums are prominent throughout and always interesting. A nice paveway between Portishead and early Bonobo. Best Tracks: - Don't Go Nowhere - I Stole Your Car - Belladonna Worst Tracks: - Some Kind Of Kink Rating: 7/10
Mostly enjoyed this album, especially the parts which were clearly influenced by dub and trip-hop. Not a perfect project though - there are some weaker tracks which haven't stood the test of time as well
It’s not bad, but I’m never going to listen to it again. It goes on way too long, but it didn’t totally bore me or make me irrationally angry so it’s a low three, I think.
Much less dated sounding than expected
Started off interesting, if a little antiseptic. Really tailed off at the end.
Noty cup of tea
Decent. Wee bit long and dragged towards the end.
Forgettably groovy grooves.
Fundamentally annoying, but up to more interesting things than most of the electronica included on here
No estoy del todo convencido
Enjoyed this.
Good in parts
Fun and jazzy sometimes but didn't catch my attention
Pretty nice. Might listen to it again.
Pretty boring overall, though I did like the first and last tracks. Favorite: They’re Hanging Me Tonight
No los había escuchado, pero no me han impresionado.
Pleasantly surprised by this album. I'd never heard of them so I had no clue what to expect from them musically. They're electronic, yes, but I also hear the swing revival that happened in the late 90's early 00's, along with a bit of reggae. A few of the songs were tedious, but mostly I enjoyed this album.
01) Keeping Pigs Together - 7,5 02) Some Kind of Kink - 7,0 03) Shellback - 6,5 04) Don't Go Nowhere - 7,5 05) The Rake - 7,0 06) The Rough and the Quick - 6,5 07) Bussing - 6,5 08) I Stole Your Car - 7,0 09) Alaska Street - 6,5 10) Belladonna - 6,5 11) They're Hanging Me Tonight - 6,0 TOTAL: 6,77 (68/100) Current ranking: 285/409
Interesting. Worth a listen.
I've never heard of this group before, the wikipedia references a review of this album calling it a "revved up Massive Attack" - I think that's a fair shout. Electronic jams, with the occasional vocal feature. I lost it at the The Rough and The Quick, can't wait to sneak that one onto a playlist. The final track, They're Hanging Me Tonight, had a very satisfying heavy breakdown.
3.5/5
Der har helt sikkert været for meget elektroniskish musik fra den her periode, men jeg synes faktisk den her var fed og lød ret andeledes
This wasn't bad necessarily but it was awkward listening to The Rough and The Quick in the car with my parents....
Good moments.
This kind of album is why I love this exercise. Zero context for Red Snapper. Makes me want to drive all night in the rain. If I hadn't listened to Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor this would be a bit more special but I respect that these guys did it first. "The Rough and The Quick" is too horny.
To me, this is a better version of Fatboy Slim. This music all seems tailor-made for a heist scene in Ocean's Eleven, but I kinda mean that in a good way. Some fun grooves and brass on some tracks. Some absolutely outrageous lyrics on The Rough and the Quick. The production on Alaska Street was pretty sweet – if I were a hip hop producer I'd be all over sampling this. I'm never going to listen to this album again but I didn't hate it.
