Cool AF
Would love to hear them live. It's a 10/10 for me. Amazing melodies, creative, fun, overall a amazing listen. Sumamente repetible.
A creative, surprising fusion of trip hop, acid jazz, club beats, electronica, and ambient, this is a remarkable, surprising, genre-bending, work that has instantly caught my attention (listened through twice) and will become a favorite repeat listen. Cool funky beats and sounds throughout. Compositions are varied and no two tracks are alike, so listening in its entirety is a fun, adventurous journey. Perfect for a trippy headphone experience, but also would make a great background soundtrack for driving, working out, or just hanging out and chilling with friends. Never heard of Red Snapper before this but will definitely be dipping into their catalogue as a result of this discovery. 25 albums into this project, this is my first true "find" on this list...precisely why I signed up. Keep them coming! Great stuff!
i rlly fw this
This is awesome, would listen on my own time. Not one of the greats, but I'd give it the 5 on honor of being repeatable, enjoyable, and my thing.
I went into this blind, not knowing what genre to expect. I just sensed I'd enjoy it. Charged trip hop -- the moment for it may have passed, but I appreciate this surprising acoustic talent. I was tempted to remove one star for sounding like a copy of Massive Attack, but no. Red Snapper is almost better, their instruments more organic. I just wish there was more variety in the tracks, more ambient. They're capable of more. Maybe even just a different track order -- the last three are beautiful. I can see why this was released on Warped. 5 stars to boost the average rating. Y'all don't know shit about electronica.
whenever the album has a quirky name and a small amount of streams you know it'll be fire, I loved this
Love the funky beats, multi genres
Amazing electronic music with hints of royksopp, sibot, BoC, so many others
Fantastic! Finally an album, I’d never listened to by a band I’ve never heard of! I’ve really been into electronic chill music lately, so this was perfect.
"I just wasn’t expecting something so explicit and couched in zero metaphor" "the time I got to the sixth track, “The Rough and the Quick” and heard Karime Kendra sing “IWANTTHEKINDOFNIGHTTHATIREADABOUT. If Red Snapper’s aim was to satisfy, then consider me unsatisfied." Itse minuakin alkoi harmittamaan vikassa kappaleessa kun kappale uinui vasemman ja oikean kanavan välillä kun joku laiska miksaaja siellä teki temppujaan.. ..korvan tason aika-avaruuspituusero.. Audio cue.. interaural level differences... ja interaural time differences... OSAATTE KÄYTTÄÄ HYVIN.. MUTTA JÄÄ TUO KOLMAS monaural spectral cues.. JOKA ON MEIKÄN LEMPPARI.. nykysin kun tiktokkia selaa menemään niin on nuo kolme kolmesta cuesta hyvin toiminnassaja toimiikin.. jos on suomalainen semiarjalainen pään muoto joka on länsimaalaisessa psykoakustiikan tekeleen.. generalisoidun hrtf perusmallin aika tarkka peilikuva.. vaikka ugrilaiset häpeykset sieltä esiin nousevat... suomalaisen kallon on lyhyt, ylhäältä katsottuna kiilamaisesti.. munamainen... btw monaural spectral cues tarkoittaa periaatteessa sitä että kun ääni tulee eri suunnasta eri pään osat kuten korvalehti ja kallo joka btw ei ole matemaattisen pyöreä.. vaikuttaa äänen ERI TAAJUUKSIIN ERI TAVALLA!!! eli jossain sektorilla - kun pää on tietyssä asennossa ääni lähteesen - voi joku tietty taajuus tai laajempi taajuusalue... vaimentua melko täydellisesti... Tai äänenvoimakkuus kasvaa.. Tietenkin molemmat korvat mitattava erikseen koska sijaitsevat eri kohassa pään ja korvan ja kehon häiriölähteitä.. väliaineita joissa ääni kulkee.. ääni jonka nopeus muuttuu riippuen kulkemastaan väliaineesta... Siinäkin yksi häiriölähde jota mahdoton eristää pois.. Josta päästään... Ehkä annetaan anteeksi tämä asia... Jeesus kerran sanoi.. Amerikkalaisella aksentilla btw.. ei ollu britpop punk huor.. "All righty, but let the one who has never sinn' throw the first stone".... Se on viisi tähteä hyvästä melodian viennistä... sillä ei näillä kappaleilla oikein muuta kuin melodia... kappaleillaa joilla on vahssti tunnetta ja sen tunteen viemisen halukkuutta.. jotain jota artistit pelkäväävät tänään.. kun on helppo pitää yhdessä tunteessa... kappale... silloin kun vältetään obscenityt.. albumilla ei ole rajoja mitä se ei voisi ylittää yksittäisellä askeleella...
2000 - Electronic, Ambient Electronic
What a hidden gem!! One of the best albums I’ve ever heard. Absolutel banger from start to finish. Easily slipped into my top ten albums of all time.
Funky album, great with the drums and vocals.
- Super funky and groovy - Insane production and beats - Honestly takes you on a journey and is insanely fun to listen to
cool
Fantastic trip hop album, can't believe I'd never heard of it before
very good electronic fusion sound. I liked it a lot.
Brilliant, beautiful funky nu-jazzy electro hip hop. I hadn't heard them before, but now I'm a fan. Really, really good.
Very good album! Loved every track! Will relisten again soon!
Great beaty trip hop. Surprised I haven't heard it before, but happy to have discovered it!
Great stuff

This is really good
Fonkey Fusion. 4*
Loved this album! Perfect for working.
My kind of thing.... this will be getting plenty of revisits. Electronica on acoustic instruments *chefs kiss*
I loved this way more than I thought I would. I’ve never heard of them and am glad to find them. Score 1 for the list.
23/06/2026 On the scale of things.... this is a low 4. But it scraped 4 nonetheless. Spotify listeners: 60.8k
Never heard of this group or knew what to expect but I enjoyed it. I'll check out their other stuff.
As I was driving along on a sunny day, window down, Our Aim is To Satisfy playing at a healthy (unhealthy) volume, and as I was enjoying the music way more than I expected to from the description, my mind wandered down a dismaying path that ultimately revealed a deeply disturbing trend. My musical evolution from naive child to now could be be broken down as follows: 1) Music made with acoustic instruments is real, and electricity music is fake. 2) Electric instruments add epic dynamism, and sampling is lazy theft from true creatives. 3) Sampling creates a diverse buffet of musical possibilities, and pure electronic music has no soul. 4) Electronic music done well can be truly inspired, and A.I.-generated music is an abhorrent rejection of God. Well...you get the picture.
Instrumentaalista trip hoppia. Siistiä. Brittiläisen toimintaleffan tausta musiikkia. Hyvä tunnelma. Parhaat: Alaska Street, Bussing, Belladonna, Keeping Pigs Together, They're Hanging Me Tonight
I enjoyed the jazz/techno/hip hop beat combination. Would listen again
Sunglasses in a vampire nightclub. This album makes me feel good and also cool.
Super cool album. Definitely feels like the early 2000s. This music can so easily become boring and repetitive, but Red Snapper almost totally avoid it here. Such a good album to turn on for a chill groove.
Electronic records take up a strange place in this list. It feels like for every electronic record there are at least 4 folky singer songwriter records and yet, people complain that there are too many. People write this record off in particular as just simple electronic music without merit. I tend to disagree. People fail to recognize, partly due to the very short description, that this record isn't purely electronic music at all. There is an entire band behind this. When you look at this record in that way, it's actually rather interesting and fresh for its time. As I'm not that familiar with this genre and time of music, I don't know if its place on the list is merited. However, there are many many records that really don't deserve it simply because they are bad, and this record is not one of them. Now to talk about the record itself instead of about reviews: The record sets a good vibe. It blends a more trip-hoppy atmosphere with punchy drums, funky bass and vocals. It's actually really similar to a lot of modern drum and bass tracks in that way. The real instruments do add a very nice quality to the songs. I've always found that live instrumentation makes tracks like these less repetetive and soulful. It's good music to put on and listen to in the background. It's not a record that has blown me away, but it has pleasantly surprised me. 8/10
A fun and funky instrumental album, ideal with headphones when you can give it the attention it wants.
Another hidden gem here tbh. Clearly went under the radar because of bigger names at its time. Some great songs, some chill stuff, and just some decent music to listen to overall. Very good stuff, glad to have heard it.
This album was quite good... slightly long in my opinion for a sort of instrumental album, but a good listen nevertheless. There were some tracks that stood out more than others to me, for example, 'Belladonna' was a beautiful piece of music, heavily contrasted by tracks such as 'The Rake' or 'Some Kind Of Kink'. I like that there was some decent variation throughout, as I find that instrumental albums as a whole can get slightly tedious, as you can slowly lose interest. This album, however, kept interest and attention at a high level by varying the types of tracks. This is why in a lot of albums, the order of the tracks matter immensly. Favourites: Keeping Pigs Together Shellback Don't Go Nowhere Belladonna
I'm a pretty big fan of this kind of electronic music, so this was pretty good. It also definitely gets better as it goes. Those last few songs were incredible. The songs with a guest vocalist were the neatest part, they all added something that the other ones didn't and it put some much-needed variety into the album. That and the strings in some of the later songs made it stand out a lot from some similar releases on this list.
First half of this album was bad, but Alaska street was cool! They're hanging me tonight was haunting and cool, will definitely need a relisten. Uniqueness of this project gives it a higher rating for me .
Really good stuff. How have I not heard of them before?
I quite liked this, and I feel the other reviews are too harsh. Needed just a little bit of less slow/weird songs and it could have been an all timer.
I found the first cut, Keeping Pigs Together, so magical it carried me through the rest of the album. I don't know anything about acid jazz or trip hop, but I think this is it with some soul. Ethereal but with a driving bass. Lilting but with pulsing drums. Really loving this.
At first I was very skeptical about this - another electronic album from the 2000s from an artist I've never heard of, but some of this was pretty fun. It sounds exactly like what you'd expect from the album cover. Fave Tracks: Shellback, The Rough and the Quick, Bussing 3.5/5
Pretty interesting, I might come back to this later, sort of a morcheeba/massive attick/portishead sort of sound.
A pleasant surprise! Really helped me tear through some spreadsheets yesterday
This album was deliciously good!!
mid 4 i enjoyed this one. good to have on. always to get a good one youve never heard of
i thought this was cool tbh

This is excellent...really enjoyed. Entirely missed them first time round. Great sound
This is pretty good. I like the vibe a lot.
Enjoyed this one
Okay beats but some dumb shit on there too.
like this. very funky. will be looking at more of their stuff
First listen, never heard of this group. Digging the chill vibe. Like the jazz, trip hop thing. 4.
cool asf
I'm not sure this is really influential or significant enough to be on this list, but I enjoyed it because electronic music from this era makes me nostalgic. The one track I already knew was from the Spaced spundtrack.
the rough and the quick best song
4/5
To me, this is a B-tier Massive Attack or trip-hop/electronica project/album. I enjoyed it and do like having it as another option for listening to this specific type of music from this era, because I've already listened to all the A-tier stuff many times. I don't think it belongs on this list, but I enjoyed it and will listen to it again. 3.5
i have found throughout this list that i do quite enjoy trip hop??? (i say as i push aside gorillaz). this was a pleasant and quite head bopping album to listen to in the car
A surprisingly middling debut from the rock legend himself. There are some all timers on here, but also some pretty forgettable tracks.
this was a vibe in all fairness, good sample and good vibes all around
Actually pretty good. Would work well if playing wipeout.
Good
As I’ve said before, I think that any album on the Warp Records label is worth a spin. This one is mostly instrumental with some nice jazzy beats, mixing traditional instruments such as the double bass and trombone with danceable electronica. I really enjoyed this album, but to be honest I wasn’t quite prepared for just how filthy the track “The Rough and the Quick” was - definitely not safe for work! Headphones-tastic!
Nice!
dig the experimentation, it still sounds modern today. never heard of acid jazz til now
Ooh fun album to listen to at work. I liked this, it is music for nighttime highway driving
Fun vibe
v3ry nice
Honestly a pretty cool and funky album. I wasn't expecting to like this, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I saw some reviews comparing it to Massive Attack and I can see the what they're getting at - it's electronic and vibey. I also saw someone call this 'heist movie music' and I think that's both funny and accurate for some of the tracks.
Pretty weird and cool vibe to this album. Definitely some songs I found myself really grooving to
Some interesting sounds and electronic noises to make some really cool beats. Some songs are ones I wouldnt revisit regularly but are still really neat. Others were replayable bangers such as Keeping Pigs Together and Bussing
not sure what I'm listening to but not bad
3,5
This is why I'm doing this challenge. Never heard of the record or the band and I loved this. Lots of late 90s/early 2000s trip-hop beats like Massive Attack/Tricky/Portishead.
This definitely satisfied. Very good record.
so fucking good actually
I've never heard of Red Snapper but it's pretty good. I like how it feels like it's played on instruments while still being electronic music Standouts Alaska Street 4/5
Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, Red Snapper... wait hold on, Red Snapper who? Not heard of them before, but Im happy I did now. What great music, and an awesome record.
It’s night driving. It’s intellectual. It’s soothing. I like it!
Tämähän oli mieleinen! Tämmöstä downtempoa lisää 4/5
Ambient electronic turn of the millennium trip-hop with a side order of acid jazz. Think Massive Attack with more of a groove. Listening music, not dancing music. You're either going to find it an odd but interesting album or you'll consider it a bunch of aimless guff over a two bar drum loop. Best enjoyed with a good set of headphones and some quality weed.
Enjoyable background music. Seems odd to give it 4 but I’d definitely listen to this again.
Different but rather good.
I'm no prude but there was one song on here that made me blush...actually who am I kidding. Anyway, I am very much enjoying some of the deeper cuts in electronic music that the generator is exposing me to.
Chill and interesting. Has its moments
Pretty good
I've never listened to this album (29). Really well made, although a bit too electro 90/2000ish for my taste.
One of my finer discoveries so far this year. I found this in my local antique shop the other month and couldn't pass up the opportunity to add it into my collection. I wish I could teleport myself onto that album cover and hit the highway with these luscious beats soundtracking the ride. Hypnotic, groovy, trippy and ominous soundscapes perfect to just lose yourself in, but there's also a flippant, dirty swagger to be had on a couple of tracks, especially *that one* concerning having "the kind of night that I read about". There's little not to like for me here.
I first heard Red Snapper on a trip hop radio station and was immediately hooked. I know a few of their albums, but not this one. It didn't disappoint me. The sound is just great. Overall, however, this album is not one of my favourites by Red Snapper. 4/5
Really liked the grooves on this and the unusual sounds, interesting vocals, unexpected lyrics . . . I will listen to this again.
Cool grooves. A little samey from time to time.
This is a really crazy, cool album. Certainly not for everyone that’s for sure. It sort of reminds me of a Brand-X or Uzeb sort of vibe.
These songs take me elsewhere. Classy electronica 4
Not as good as DJ Shadow, but in the same wheelhouse. One of the better techno albums we've had on this list.
Classic Trip Hop that often gets overshadowed by artists like Massive Attack and Tricky. This and Making Bones are favorites from this band. If you dig this album check out Suzuki by Tosca or Nothing Changes Under The Sun by Blue States. Thievery Corporation and DJ Krush are amazing too.
I was satisfied.
Pretty fun and unexpected. One of my favs was the rake.
Chill instrumental music. Awesome song about rubbing on a girls clit
This feels like stumbling onto a late-night radio block curated by an eclectic DJ with deep love for dub, experimental electronica, and the avant-garde: all seamlessly woven into one continuous genre-hopping groove.
Pretty solid electronic here
Phenomenal experimental album. Kept me hooked all the way through.
This is awesome. I was unfamiliar before this and they’ll be a regular listen now
Awesome! Never heard of em either
I seriously loved this one. What a surprise honestly. Felt like I was in Man on a Ledge or The Bourne Identity. Best Sick Tracks: Keeping Pigs Together Belladonna They're Hanging Me Tonight 4/5
Great find!! Very Mogwai like
First album where I’ve literally never even heard the name of the artist. Had no idea what I was getting into. Soon I was slipping in a weird acidy jazz trip hop world disoriented as hell. Felt like I was in a rave from a Guy Ritchie movie. Unhinged Massive Attack vibes and I loved it. At the final track I was so anxious I had to turn it off for a few before finishing. Surprised in the best way, and an album like this is the reason I started this challenge. Never would have found it otherwise.
This was cool. Some of the songs sound like daffy duck though.
A solid electronic album with some solid influence. I especially loved the hip hop influence that lended this album a lot towards some trip hop vibes I really liked. Some really cool interesting stuff here I mostly liked and decently enjoyed. Rounding up to a 4.
good stuff
surpresa. 3 a 4 estrelas. eletronico, d'n'b beat, guitarra, hiphop e cinemático, ótimas refs.
The Rough and the Quick
I liked this. Groovy and solid energy. That funky dj sound. The kind of music that goes well with most things
I like this enough to give it 4*. I'd like to explore their catalog further and I liked quite a few tracks on this one. Only real qualm was some of the vocal samples were to repetitive.
This one surprised me with some very cool, moody grooves.
An odd choice. I like Red Snapper, but are they really that revolutionary? To have come across this before other Warp artists of the time (so far no Aphex, Squarepusher, Plaid, Luke Vibert etc) or similar jazzy DnB like Roni Size seems odd. It's a good album, definitely a 4*, but not even my favourite Red Snapper LP. Why this over Making Bones, for example?
Consider to Satisfied. Never heard of them before, but likely the majority of it.
Really weird mood on this album. Final 2 tracks of this album very post rocky and beautiful, some strange tracks in the middle, 3.5/5
I was a big fan of Red Snapper back in the day. They never were at the level I had hoped them to be. Felt like they were holding back. Having said that, this is definitely their best release and deserving of four stars.
Started out as some ambient forgettable but turned into an interesting funky soul sound with some of the same electronic influences on it
3.5 stars
The other day I got Roni Size, the Drum 'n Bass DJ. Red Snapper was marketed as the live instruments version of that. I was somewhat involved in d'nb and thought it was too gimmicky, so I never paid any attention to it. It was not entirely the same scene, as Red Snapper were a live band instead of DJs. Turns out they're actually better. It's as repetitive, but somehow it sounds more musical. Favorite song: Alaska Street
Psyence Fiction kind of killed the whole trip hop thing. the record was super hyped up, had all these cooks in the kitchen, and yet that didn't stop it from receiving an (unjust) thrashing in the music press for failing to meet exospheric expectations. even Pitchfork, who gave it an incredible 9.8 at the time quietly scrubbed the review from its site when pretty soon after, downtempo, trip hop, and acid jazz started spiraling into obscurity, overshadowed by the revolution of buzzy electro house and chopped up disco house hits. regardless of the quality of the music, trip hop became another byword for undesirable lounge music, something to drink or ignore or fuck to. when the most beloved examples of your genre in the coming decade are soundtracks to PS2 games, you know Bristol has fallen into the sea. poor red snapper. making fucking incredible work in their genre, set on the wayside by simply by existing at the time it did. the grooves are chill, but just spooky enough to raise the hair on the back of your neck. "Don't Go Nowhere" feels equal parts inviting and yet also slightly off-putting with its looping vocal sample. some parts of it are abrasive, like the lyrics to "The Rough and the Quick", and some of the tracks don't particularly develop from one musical idea to the next, but i feel like this might be intentional? this isn't a cocktail record, this is a record that feels like the underside of a highway, cars roaring above as the graffiti stares you down. there's nothing more minimal than decaying brutalized slabs of concrete in the sky. the record's inclusion in 1001 Albums is a mystery to me, not because of its lack of quality or the relative obscurity of the artist, but simply because of the unconventional period of time it existed within. trip hop's demise can be foul play, but acid jazz is another thing; nothing killed it, it just kind of keeled over and died like some cancerous hamster. it's at the precipice of the apocalypse, about to slide, feet first, into the sinkhole in the center of the city.
Rare jazz hip hop thing
Really good.
It started out as a nice surprise but by the end I was pretty much done with it. Good for a listen though for sure.
I had "Some Kind of Kink" as one of my five or so MP3s in 2001! I was expecting this to be unsatisfying, but it's not actually too bad. It does seem there were a lot of tone-deaf singers in this era though.
4/5 but probably won't listen again
Im glad, i hold off listening to this album. I enjoyed it more than i thought.
Funky
I enjoyed this, I've never heard of them before and it was really good
Extremely competent if a little shaky in some rare places
yes good 4/5
Some good sounds and beats, but hit and miss track list. Some songs are great and others pretty annoying to listen to, they shouldnt all be 5 minutes long. Still, very atmospheric music that really fits the cover with great opener and closing tracks.
ez viszont nagyon izgalmas volt 😎
The Rake slaps. This is electronic music that can double for dance or trance.
Fav: Don’t Go Nowhere Least Fav: Some Kind Of Kink Massive Attack if they went crazy experimental + a little sprinkle of Portishead in that one song
Every now and then, I'm introduced to an artist I've not come across before, and I find something I like. This is one of those such times!
Really good, really weird!
Good electric album
Good vinyl to have
Pretty great trip hop album, it's got the exact mix of atmosphere and inventive uses of beats and other instrumentals to make it a nice vibe for it's 50 mins. I usually love this stuff but it makes me happy to explore other albums in the genre that aren't the usual suspects
Extraordinary, sophisticated but not snobbish.
There's honestly not much to say, asides from this just being some nice tunes from the WARP label. Solid 4 Stars.
I’m genuinely at a 4. Look, from the get-go, my expectations were a little low – 2000 trip-hop album, with a barebones Wikipedia page, a 2.7 rating on the website, and a Spotify page that includes the band’s name in the title of the album. With such little care or reverence, it felt like I shouldn’t give a shit. And yet, for whatever reason, this aligned directly with a lot of my VGM sensibilities in a way that’s hard to describe – the first track on this album gave me “technopop Silent Hill” energy, and I think that soundscape carrying itself through a lot of this album, on a very slow buildup to a purely manic final track in “They’re Hanging Me Tonight” just really clicked for me. There’s not actually a cohesive narrative here at all; this is just 11 tracks with varying degrees of trip-hop and techno soundscapes meant to evoke the feeling of say, Y2K or The Matrix. And yet, I only really found myself annoyed by one track in “Shellback”. From Track 5 onward, this album just found a groove for me that slides right into all of my VGM sensibilities – the awkward choppy rap samples & the helium-infused alien version of Donald Duck on “The Rake”, the completely out of left field explicit lyrics (which simply made me laugh) and MVC2 / fighting game vibes of “The Rough & The Quick”, the heavier bass & machinery feel of “Bussing”, the Plok!-esque SNES feel to “Alaska Street”, the dynamic ambience of “Belladonna”, and the eerie “church organ at a fucked up cult” vibes from “They’re Hanging Me Tonight”. Each track had something new to offer, and while I’m sure it’s easy to scrutinize the compositions themselves (there’s definitely some form of “the first minute is the whole song” to most of them that my ears didn’t catch), I was just in a zone that I really liked being in. Look, if you hate this sort of soundscape, it’s an album that’s definitely a 2, or even a 1. For how much I managed to enjoy it, I’ll give it a pretty generous 4. Does it deserve to be on the list? Eh, no, probably not – there’s a number of albums that could’ve made it over this one, and I’m still stunned beyond belief that albums like No Jacket Required, Demon Days, and The Colour & The Shape aren’t on the list. However, I think I’m glad that it is, if only because it’s music that fits a niche that would be criminally unrecognized without being on here. There might be albums that do this better on the list, and for all I know, this genre & style could be criminally over-recognized on the list (as in, I will go to the author’s house and confront him in a criminal way (this is a joke)). Overall, I did like it, and I like it enough to give it a 4, even if I might regret it in the future.
Our Aim Is To Satisfy begeistert mit groovigen Beats und innovativen Sounds – ein Muss für alle, die Musik abseits des Mainstreams suchen!
Not sure what type of music this is but it's bitchin'. I think I liked the first half more than the second half but either way the album was fun and chill at the same time 4/5 Might listen to this stuff on the weekends or when I have headphones to truly appreciate (or hate) the music
They aimed to satisfy. I am satisfied. Very psychedelic with a nice progression through the album.
I really liked this actually. Does it need to be on this list? Maybe not, its never a good sign if the album isnt in the top albums from spotify, but nevertheles I liked it. There was more going on in variety and quality then some other electronic records on this list.
This was wayyyy better than I initially thought it was going to be A long time ago, I was into the music of Pretty Lights. His music blends electronic and acoustic like no other. I find this album to be extremely close to what ive heard in the past from similar artists, but with more emphasis on acoustic instruments. I enjoyed most tracks, but found Bussing to be my favorite. Ill definitely be going back to this album. I really want to give it 5 stars, but ill actually round down to 4 and hopefully regret my choice later.
A nice surprise. This is some solid Trip-Hop from an album whose sole accolade (according to Wikipedia) is its inclusion on this list.
Qué ganas de un sótano en Berlín
Very good for background music.
musica elettronica niente male
3.5
Very interesting. Part post rock, part trip hop. It's too long and inconsistent, but it has great moments.
Never heard of them, somehow I doubt that this album is really essential. And oh no I kinda enjoyed it. Great atmosphere.
Unexpected. Not heard of them, and really quite like it!
Fun times
I'm indeed satisfied ^.^
A variety of sounds. Everything sharp.
I really liked this, it was funky and fun, the kind of thing I'd have playing in the background. Rating: 4
Actually really enjoyed this. Like the last two songs the best almost a relaxing vibe to them. I also like the first one-it gave horror movie vibes
Not my thing but easy listening, not so bad at all
Not bad. DJ Shadow is my style of “electronic,” and this is nice. Missing a star because DJ Shadow was doing this slightly better at the same time.
Love electronic music. Track one ‘Keeping the Pigs Together’ has already gotten me interested.
Love the combination of dance electronica with real instruments.
Acid jazz has a way of making it's source material feel more unnerving, unsettling, unruly. The real star on Our Aim Is To Satisfy is the production from Hugo Nicolson who cut his teeth on the unique sound of baggy. Red Snapper has everything in the right place with this album, just an incredibly engaging with some beautiful sounds. The ambience, the bass, the DRUMS, my goodness. That snare is unreal.
Pretty cool modern jazz/electronics album. Never heard of it before, but I'm happy to jump into the genre now. Nice little find.
Really glad to have discovered this, didn't know it at all, but really enjoyed it. Will definitely be listening again.
Really liked this. I don’t think I’ve heard the other C-word on an album before, so that was……interesting.
New one on me. Really enjoyed it
I really liked it. Once again, we need half stars. 3.5 would be my pick here, but I’ll go with 4 stars because I think It’s better than fine.
No idea who this is. Opening track has a great groove. Ok. I really like this album. To the point where I want to tell everyone about it. This is a great album.
Was pleasantly surprised - like them a lot!!
Dimery, you schmuck - how dare you pick this over "Making Bones"! There have been plenty of instances of the list ignoring a band's most popular release and going for their earlier stuff instead - The Dandy Warhols and Massive Attack being two recent egregious examples I've encountered - and he really shoulda done the same here, too. This album is still pretty good, but it doesn't sound as cohesive as "Making Bones", and it doesn't make nearly as good a use of MC Det - he absolutely kicks ass on the other album, but here he gets a novelty sound-effect-sounding track with "The Rake". 😒 Fave tracks - "Keeping Pigs Together" and "They're Hanging Me Tonight" have that moody cinematic feel I love these guys for...
That was great. How haven't I heard this before?
This was great. If I ever run a bar in a sci fi then I'll have this on the play list.
I was surprised at how much I liked their instrumentals, daring and imaginative.
I've been looking for some good trip hop
Oddly enjoyed this. Definitely eclectic but kind of late night car music
Let the review bombing commence!
Dark, brooding, futuristic. Lots of shades of sampling and soundscaping that belong to the realm of El-P, DJ Shadow, or Deltron. Tracks consistently evolve into something more interesting than their starting point, but in a way that feels completely natural. Listened to: walking through Prospect Park. Favorite tracks: Keeping Pigs Together, The Rough and The Quick
It’s hilarious that the Wikipedia article just states that the album is on the list… Nothing else about it. I enjoyed this, appreciated it more knowing the artist uses more live instrumentals and not only electronic.
I now understand how this album has a cult online critic following. I’m a sucker for this era of electronica that sits between Trip-Hop and French House where that transition is evident in the music itself. This is a good, chilled out album filled with a lot of that sound, elevated by some veryyyy impressive acoustic drum sounds. I think it’s intriguing to know this band is a legitimately band in the traditional sense, although it doesn’t sound essential to the music’s composition to my ears. It really has everything I could want from it: a couple stand out tracks I’ll add to playlists, a handful of high-energy dance songs, a few cuts with vocals to not make it sound monotonous and only instrumental, and some solid filler songs that round out and enhance the album when listened to as a single unit. It ends a bit weak and the jazz ventures aren’t all that rewarding, but those aren’t overbearing critiques imo A very solid late night driving album. Good for fans of a niche within a niche, which applies to me. Not a favorite, but still a standout.
I decided after one listen that I had to give this another listen, and I found the second listen interesting, so it meets my basic requirement for a four rating i.e. interesting enough to require a second listen, and still interesting after the second listen. It does have some rather filthy lyrics, in places, but the musicianship is good, and there's a nice swing to many of the tunes.
went into this apprehensive; came out having enjoyed most of it. Great album.
Keeping pigs together is a solid slightly dark vibe that sounds like the album cover looks. Sadly a lot of the album sounds like the chemical brother's c-sides, they lack that 'thing' that elevates them above background music. I feel like if you cut out songs 3-7 you'd have a very solid 30-minute album but the middle just sorta drags. I was thinking of giving the album a 3 but the thematic transition that happens after I stole Your Car changed my mind, the last 3 songs sound like they could've come out of a different album entirely.
The perfect soundtrack to observe and absorb the urban sprawl from the train window.
Another album where the average rating is far too low in my opinion. Apparently I love the electronic industrial stuff far more than most. And I didn’t think I did! Anyway I listened to this twice through on my drive today just drifting along to the music. It’s very good! 4/5
This album rips. Never knew anything about this album before but clear that this ensemble plays with a lot of groove and impact while integrating traditional methods and technology. I'll be digging into their catalogue and given their unrelenting experimentation with instruments and genre, no doubt I'll be enjoying every bit of it.
I haven't been the biggest fan of electronica from this list, but I think this might be the best non-Daft Punk electronica album I've heard so far. This actually had some variety of grooves I could get into instead of the endless repetition that seems to typically plague the genre. I did get the feeling that the album overstayed its welcome by the end, but overall I found myself enjoying it.
Some ok stuff and some great, funky stuff. I liked the last handful of songs a lot.
This was cool! I had never heard of this band. Definitely would have been listening to this in 2000 if I had known about them. From the description I read, I was expecting something more like the band Galactic. But this doesn’t quite fit that mould. Very very cool.
Acid jazz/trip hop. A funky, jazzy, hop hoppy album. Not the same kind of trip hop found in Dummy by Portishead, this album does not have the same atmospheres and soundscapes. It's much more rock inspired. A lot like the Moby album, each song kind of had it's own vibe, didn't really feel like they flowed super well into each other all the time. But they were all unique and fun to listen to. My major gripe is with the length. nearly an hour long and only 3/11 songs were shorter than 5 minutes. I just don't think there was quite enough going on in each song for it to justify being that long. It would serve for good background music, not so easy for active listening. I would revisit to put in the back while playing a game or something. 4/5
Liked it quite a bit more than I expected, given how some of the seemingly random british albums that get put on this list are. While some songs could definitely be trimmed, and I never found any of the vocals appealing, this album does the good thing of putting the very best tracks right at the start and the end. The opener pulls you in, and then the last two tracks are just fantastic, incredible atmosphere.
Geggjað stuff ...
pretty good weird background music
I really liked this. It is good working/driving music.
Liked it more than I thought I would. Especially the songs with Karime Kendra singing. Did catch some Massive Attack vibes albeit more uptempo. I'll revisit this one again.
Eclectic mix, good electronic music from the early oughts, a la Chemical Bros. 4/5
this is very mid 2000's video game to me somehow. really good music to put in the background while working, i like it.
Definitely enjoyed this album, didn't know anything about this going in which was cool. There's a lot going on here but it really works. Highlight tracks: "The Rake", "Bussing", "I Stole Your Car", "Alaska Street" (problably half the album at this rate)
Cool and atmospheric, at times sounding like early 2000s hacker music and others building soundscapes with soft backbeats. Very much enjoyed this after not having heard this group. Excellent music to walk or work to during the day.
Dynamic and at times kinetic, and more club-funky than full-on jam funky. Some cool-ish grooves and moods are set (e.g., "Don't Go Nowhere," "Bussing," "Belladonna") though, as with one's memories of this period, the more one thinks about them, the less sense they all make and the more one thinks "what was so great about that time anyway?" They bordeline overstuff the styles (one kept waiting for the trip-hop to take over entire, but then the skanky enought ska-ish bits were a nice surprise). The melange mostly works because of the strong rhythm and a willingness to let things play out and not to do it all at once. It's safe to say it's aged better than a lot of from the era of excessive breakbeats. Maybe one likes more than Massive Attack, but one doesn't feel too much inspired to spend too much time sussing those nuances.
3.5
solid electronic album that takes A LOT from earlier rock - 8/10
Matrix vibes. Interestin.
Comienza muy bien. Luego un poco rollo. Y termina muy bien. Venga, un 4.
This reminded me of another band or album but I couldn't remember quite what. But I enjoyed it a lot! I liked that the style changed and there were some surprises but overall I thought it was cool and interesting.
This one took a long time for me to start to like. It's not a style of music that I knew much about. Standouts: Some Kind of Kink, Keeping Pigs Together, Shellback 3.5
favourite song: some kind of king least favourite song: shellback started incredibly strongly and very rarely faltered. probably my favourite (mostly) instrumental album ive had so far
Going back to this album that I missed. Actually really enjoyed it. Think this kind of music is growing on me. Going to download it to put on as background music in the car.
Keeping Pigs Together - 8/10 Some Kind of Kink - 8/10 Shellback - 8/10 Don't Go Nowhere - 8/10 The Rake - 8/10 The Rough and The Quick - 8/10 Bussing - 9/10 I Stole Your Car - 8.5/10 Alaska Street - 8/10 Belladonna - 8/10 They're Hanging Me Tonight - 8/10 TOTAL - 89.5/110
Never heard if this and kinda like it. Good mix of ambience and electronics for shaking
The first song was quite nice, very 90s trip-hoppish, but I was wandering how the folks at 1001 would’ve picked this over all the other contenders from that era. The following tracks are more unique – the fact that they play actual instruments gives them more options and they bring in vocalists just enough to make it interesting.
Good post apocalyptique music, but too dark to my taste
cool cool cool
Yeah yeah yeah
Pretty good. Fun instrumentals reminds me of the Prodigy a little bit. Good variety in songs.
Dece
I know this gets a lot of hate for being kind of repetitive and samey but it's right up my alley. It's got the energy of early Crystal Method but with an additional rock edge that I quite enjoyed. It was damn near perfect GSD background music for my work day.
After listening to Our Aim Is To Satisfy, did Red Snapper satisfy? I will just start this off by saying that this album felt more like a drug trip than the last electronica album I looked at. But that's not a bad thing, In fact i really enjoy a lot of the beats the songs used and i really liked the fast pace of them too. I guess they did satisfy in the end Best Song: Shellback Worst Song: Belladonna
All in all aber ein stimmiges, moody album - 4.25/5
lowkey a great album to do homework to
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Keeping pigs together, Don’t go nowhere, Alaska street
I think I like this but it didn't really stick.
A very good trip hop album tho no massive attack.
Funky
HMMMMMM I REALLY LIEK THIS ONE!! sometimes it feels a bit repetitive, so i wonder if id be able to listen to it over and over, but i really like it! it reminded me of bjork? but without her vocals
I kinda dig this kind of downtempo music. Cool boombap hip hop drums with decent instrumentation. I will listen to this while driving.
This album felt like it was all over. At times a grungy sort of rap, felt like Tribe almost, and then parts were like alt rock from the late 90s. Not a complaint, a perfectly enjoyable listen still
Never even heard of this before - but it’s great, love it
My favorite instrumental stuff so far, really good 2000s/late 90s-y electronica. Docking a star b/c it could've been shorter, but this is great for what it is. 4.5 stars. BT - Keeping Pigs Together - Some Kind of Kink - Don't Go Nowhere - The Rough and the Quick - Bussing - I Stole Your Car - Alaska Street - Belladonna - They're Hanging Me Tonight
Always liked electronic music, from the first wave of Sheffield bands like Hula Clock DVA Chakk and Cabaret Voltaire ad=bd the heavier stuff like Chem. Brothers, Underworld. Positive energetic music. Red Snapper is in that category, good it is in 1001 list. This album nice, relaxed, jazzy. 4 stars.
Maybe if I took the time to better understand the value/importance/contribution of each of the various electronic music albums we have encountered while on this journey then I would have a more discerning ear. As it is, it was fine and kind of funky, but not necessarily all that special for me.
Red Snapper feels ahead of their time with this album. For the year 2000 dropping some thoughtful, heavy jazz-ish infused music. A little droning at the end, but the build-up might have been worth it in a different mindset.
A grooving cool smoky smooth soundscape of beats and samples. A great time! Don't listen to "The Rough and the Quick" if your grandmother is around.
Was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of this album, didn’t hear about this group before but when I saw that the album was on Warp I knew it was going to be quality. Not quite up there with the likes of Burial or Aphex Twin for me but still good and a really nice change of pace from the usual 70s rock album. Way more sonically interesting than 3/4s of all the albums of the list.
Cool beats throughout, and some great highlights at the very end, but quite a few of the songs miss a bit of spark for me.
An almost inpenetrable musical fortress of a puzzle. The Warp and Weft dont meet until later. The best 3 track are the last 3. Which no one will ever hear. A superb astral soundscape. Hard to catalaogue. If this is here, surely it means any album by Xangadix, or The Art Of Noise or Nightmatres on Wax will be too, because its MUCH better at occupying this landing sequence for astronauts. Experimental flyovers of psychadelic insomnia progressions do not a pop album make. Great concept album, though. I was going to crap on it as a superb and esoteric art curio. For the "wierd and interesting" pile. But I in my perigrinations got to Alaska Street and the threads or waveforms lined up... It becomes wonderful ambient. I mean its almost progressive. But too late.
This satisfies all over the map, although it's not the most memorable.
Really cool ambient and chill, need a relisten but this is solid. Feels like 2000s matrix collective consciousness vibes
Fresh and funky beats, plenty of attitude. Great album, maybe lacking slightly in some all out bangers that stops this being a 5/5 for me
3.5 can see how this was groundbreaking at the time but all I can think about is "cool" characters in this era of TV (eg Jeremy sisto in 6 feet under)
Comienza muy bien. Luego un poco rollo. Y termina muy bien. Venga, un 4.
Had no idea what this was or what to expect. Loved it. Aim achieved.
Beguiling
Quite good 3.5/5
Very cool
Sick
Lots of dub mixed in with DnB. Going into my regular rotation. Buying it on CD for any late night driving sessions
I enjoyed it. A lot of interesting stuff happening.
An unexpected delight. Never heard of it, not my genre but excellent nonetheless.
Oei, wat fijn.
Love the drum and overall vibe of this album. Great instrumentals
New sounds for me. Big fan tho. Didn’t hear all of them but like the ones I did a lot.
I got into this album. Great funk bass and loved the keyboard.
3.8 - solid grooves and beats, like a more aggressive massive attack. Enjoyed the first and last tracks in particular.
i liked this! i always somewhat drift when listening to electronic music like this so i dont really have specific likes and dislikes, but i enjoyed it
I don't know how these guys dropped out of my library, they're great. Love this album.
Like it.
Percolates a lot more than similarly-vibed bands. Good stuff.
I don't know how I managed to have never heard of this band before. The music, somewhere between Soul Coughing and Propellerheads, would have been on heavy rotation for me about twenty years ago. You can almost hear the reckless post-Y2K glee!
I’m over 200 albums in and there have only been a few that I’d revisit. This is one. Ended up playing it 4 times. A nice mix of trip hop and dance. Stand out tracks -The Rough and The Quick -Don’t Go Nowhere’s - Keeping Pigs Together - Bussing - Shellback 4/5
acid jazz. Really good
Their spotify and wiki info has so many genre descriptions. IDK what to call these guys. Hadn't ever heard of them prior but really enjoyed the entire album. Great find.
quite cooolll some songs a little irritating though hehe
Really dug it actually. Definitely has that 1999-2001 Massive Attack vibe but a lot more varied and interesting.
Groovy, laidback, chill. Perfect for driving, studying, or just hanging out.
Very nice
Ok. Very different and interesting. I had never heard of this. Good discovery!
Pretty sweet.
album contains classic rap to ambient electric tracks and does it in a way I've not heard before, surprised it has so few streams on spotify
good electro album
How did i not hear this at the time? I would have loved it. Got me pumped for a dh bike riding session. Will listen again when the mood takes me.
Whacky but in all the best ways, some top notch songs. Great find, Rough and the Quick tickled me in all my immature ways
I don't usually listen to stuff like this, but it was really good! no real vocals but written well.
Ooh my first impression are this is going to be cool. I really enjoyed this one. Surprised it’s the first time I’ve really heard it.
Surprisingly diverse. Very good.
Some really groovy jazz hop, this Aussie approves and gives it four Fantales out of five.
A little long but great album overall
