THIS IS THE PERFECT EVENING VINYL, just maybe not as good as stevie wonder 😉
This was a delightful surprise, or - to be more accurate - half of a delightful surprise. The first half -side 1 in its original guise, I imagine - is full of invention and imagination, including a version of 'Grapevine' which is nothing like what I expected from the Temptations. It culminates in a nine-minute plus wigout which seems to be pointing the way forward to all kinds of 1970s goodness. Flip it over, though, and it's a side of generally safe late sixties pop songs, sung impeccably, of course, but quite a step down from where we'd been. A whole album of what we heard on side 1 might have been nudging five stars for me, as it is, it's somewhere between three and four, and I've settled back on three because I was kind of let down by it in the end.
It’s calm, it’s calm
Reminds me of my grandpa. Unfortunately makes me sad
I think I just really like the Temptations. I thought the opening number “Cloud Nine” had a Sly Stone feel and the Wikipedia article confirmed that. Their “Heard it through the Grapevine” is good but not my favorite.
Really great funk album. Good tunes and very smoother listening.
My fav band
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background
I wanted to really like it because it’s The Temptations. You know The Temptations. The ones who do that song. But I just thought it was okay.
When you search Cloud 9 full album on YouTube, you get albums of the same name by Megan Moroney, George Harrison, Nine, Kygo, Skyzoo and others before you find The Temptations. Either this is a crap/popular name for an album, its importance has been overstated, or both. Now, everyone loves The Temptations, of course. Smooth, Motown tunes. Like most Motown acts of the time, to remain relevant they began to incorporate mkre Funk, Rock, and psychedelic tones into their sound. Which makes this an interesting, funky album. You still have covers of known hits, and the originals range from by the numbers to underrated bangers. What the songs may lack in quality and memorability, they make up for in how damn good they sound, the production, how well the band plays and sings.
Classic Motown, soul sound with no standout track. Easy to listen to but unremarkable.
Your typical Motown fare. It was a good time, but nothing that knocked my socks off Favorite Songs: Gonna Keep on Shining, Cloud Nine
I can see why Eve ate the apple. I also would have given in to The Temptations.
Nonii.
Ihan kovia biisejä, mutta jotenkin odotin enempi revittelyä. Esimerkiksi tuo I Heard it Through the Grapevine jäi jotenkin ihan piippuun. Kyllä tämän levyn parissa silti viihtyi.
again, enjoyed but did not stand out for me
Smooth as silk
I’m always surprised by how solid The Temptations were. But that was good, top to bottom.
Pleasant enough but nothing earth shattering.
Repetative but cheery
Great funk and harmonies.
Never listened to an entire Temptations album but only know their music from the classics. Oh this is funky? Okay. Not fully what I was expecting. Loving this sound. It’s very funk and soul. First three songs are great. It’s a great funk soul sound. Gets more what I was expecting after that. Loses that funk edge and sounds more traditional soul r&B music for a few songs. The second half of the album is still good. But never matches those first few songs. This will probably be a 3. Really good at times. It’s definitely a mix of sounds but it feels like it’s conflicting with itself for two different sounds. Both are fine and performed well but almost wish it stayed more of a funk album.
Nice length, cute tunes. Not used to how Motowns reuses there hits, I have heard Through the Grapevine but never in this rendition
dum ba dum ba dum ba dum badudmmddmd
The Temptations dive into funky soul, in chase of James Brown and Sly Stone. Sweet, I'll bite. I haven't really heard a ton of their stuff other than the hits, so this is the first full album I've heard and I'm glad to have discovered it. Great sound in the title track, I'll definitely add that to my funk/soul playlist. Their version of Heard it Through the Grapevine sounds a little cheesy compared to the Marvin Gaye version. Runaway Child is pretty sweet. At first given the title I thought it was an earlier, original version of Mayfield's Little Child, but it's different. But cool for many of the same reasons. A deep groove there. Why did she have to leave is solid. I Gotta Find a Way is great. Definitely a solid album all around and one I'll go back to. High 4/5, might even be a 5 though a couple of the poppier tracks sound more like filler to me, even though those are likely closer to their old, original sound.
Very cool. Enjoyed this
I wanted to like this more than I did. I respect this group too much to give it anything below a 3 but the songs really just don't stick regardless of how talented these guys are. No hate as they have some amazing songs outside of this record.
Tempted to rate it more, but is it really better?
Funky & feel good.
Completely harmless in its funky Motown fusion, it didn’t do anything to blow me away either. Not my favorite version of through the grapevine, but I can understand if someone claimed it to be the best. I felt the influence the group had on the Jackson 5 the entire way through, very cool.
Lovely and classic
The Temptations – Cloud Nine (1969) On Day 277, this record introduced a bold, revolutionary new sonic direction, and the group executed the transformation exceptionally well. Rather than completely abandoning their roots for full-blown psychedelic abstraction, the album balances mind-expanding guitar effects with that classic, undeniable Motown funkiness on tracks like "Keep on Trying'" and their trademark driving grooves but ultimately iiked more Runnaway Child Running Wild and Heard It Through The Grapevine . The vocal interplay between Dennis Edwards' gritty leads and the group's lush harmonies gave the heavier, socially conscious themes genuine emotional weight. A cohesive, vital shift in soul music history that made for an engaging listen throughout. A very strong 4/5.
Biting a little off Sly Stone never hurt anyone, just endless hot tracks on this.
Good vibes, min typ av soul. Också älskar Mr. Dum Dum Dum
Vrmt super chill très cool
Solid 3.5. 'Run Away Child, Running Wild' é uma música espetacular, e com certeza vale a pena ouvir só por ela, mas o resto do disco não se destaca tanto.
I liked it
3.5 rounded down. The Temptations are the best of their type - r&b group of the 60s. I always think of Francisco Lindor’s walk up song being My Girl when I think of them but they had a lot of great music.
This was a good listen, but I am not a fan of their cover of Heard It Through The Grapevine. I definitely preferred the Motown songs over the more funky ones.
A great blast through 35 minutes of soul. A fine mix of 4-to-the-floor classic Motown, with some Northern Soul moments and a couple of deeper, sociopolitical tracks that wouldn't sound out of place in a Blaxploitation movie. Solid.
Some amazing songs, but a little inconsistent.
The Temptations... Where have I heard that name before? Oh, yeah. I listened to an album of theirs about 360 albums ago. I didn't know these guys had a second list album in 'em. Anyways, I know that they're a funk group and that they have a characteristically funk sound, but other than that I don't recall much from their previous outing. Hopefully this release will prove to be more substantive. Here goes. This list has really been burning through the 30-minute albums lately... I can hardly complain. This album kind of just blew right by me, truth be told. Not a souler, what can I say? The brass numbers are the consistent highlight of this album, the funk basses are adept and there were a few vocal hooks I found to be alright, but other than that there wasn't a whole lot in here that hooked me. The strings are garish and flaky, the percussion flat and thudding and the slightly guttural vocal style isn't very moving, either. All in all, this was a graciously short listen, but one I don't feel compelled to revisit. Book time. The producer of this album (Norman Whitfield) propelled The Temptations' burgeoning career to stardom. Whitfield brought in Dennis Edwards (replacement for the previous vocalist of the band) and redefined the band's sound. The title track won a Grammy. Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes and Barry White are among the fans of this album. Wikipedia says this album alienated longtime fans of the group, but brought in many fresh faces. The two critics that reviewed this album were favourable, and the album peaked at No. 32 in the UK and No. 4 in the US. Hmm. I was expecting there to be more going for this album, though I suppose it's a pivotal release in their history and I still think there's a respectable number of soul albums on this list. I suppose I'm content with letting this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
Suave Fave track: I Heard it Through the Grapevine
Listened to quite a few days ago but I remember that it was a winner. I'm feeling a light to decent 4, on this one. Tran- 3.5/5
This is a fun vibe. I am definitely interesting in exploring more of this scene now.
Classic
Baby!
3/5. This album starts off very strong with tracks like “Cloud Nine” and the longer “runaway child, running wild” but from there it mostly just becomes a very standard late 60’s/early 70’s soul album. Though I do also really like the track “don’t let him take your love from me” later in the track list. A number of highlights, but I wasn’t in love with the whole album.
Enjoyment: 9/10 Replayability: 8/10 Cohesion: 9/10 Flow/Pacing: 8/10 Artistic Merit: 10/10 Weighted Average: 8.8/10 Review: I grew up a fan of the Temptations before knowing who they were. This album is a gem of rockin' funk and early psychedelic bangers. I will be returning to this often. Liked Song(s): Cloud Nine, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Why Did She Have To Leave Me (Why Did She Have To Go), I Gotta Find A Way (To Get You Back) Disliked Song(s): (None) Recommend? Yes Heard Before? Partly

❤️
Generically groovy
I loved it, it was a great discovery.
Pleasant but not memorable
This was great. High-class Motown soul integrating psychedelic rock guitars and expansive song structures, with the great vocals the Temptations always brought. The late 60s was so rich.
Its good, just maybe not my vibe
That intersection between easy and basic early 60’s doo wop and the late 60’s / early 70’s great political songs.
Soul and funk, but nothing spectacular.
A great album of classic soul. It reflects the zeitgeist of the year it was recorded and you can see the influence of some of the psychedelic soul that was prevalent at the time, coming through. The long instrumental ending of Run Away Child, Running Wild is evidence of this. Then side 2 is good old soul again. A good effort and enjoyable.
Good stuff good vibes
ok
Great but I didn't think much of it. Would listen again. Forgettable. It was really good though some nice vocals and sounds
love it
Classic and perfect
Id listen to it again
Hackneyed soul/RnB including the worst version of Heard It Through The Grapevive I have ever heard. This sounds like one of those American Drifters bands that pop up on sun holidays. Perfectly competent, but lacking creativity.
This was great. Great songs and a great band overall.
Excited to listen to this because the Temptations song that I do know I really like. Absolutely perfect album.
When I think of early R&B this is exactly what it sounds like in my head
Ákaflega lítið grípandi hér. En ekki lélegt!

It's ok
I’ve always loved the Temptations as song artists. Whole albums that I’ve enjoyed like Psychedelic Shack or All Directions are great but have some moments, especially PS, which has getting high songs that don’t wear as well. So far the first three songs seem to hold together thematically, although “Grapevine doesn’t bring anything to the song that Marvin Gaye and CCR both sang better. Overall some great songs, not necessarily a great album as a whole.
Always had a bit of a soft spot for their songs, and I hadn't heard all of them off this album until prompted. A definite difference from the traditional Motown R&B sound (with the few exceptions) that I was expecting, but a good listen overall.
This is, in short, very much my jam.
This was fine. I didn't find it that interesting really, however it did sound newer than it was. I was surprised it wasn't 70s or 80s. I would give this a 2.5 if I could, but it is defo worth more than a 2, so I've given it a 3. You can definatly feel this was a shift from whitewashed "soul" in the 60s to more 70s/80s soul.
This was good, enjoyed the songs here. Would listen again.
tooop, del blue jazz que gusta
Back to back I Heard It Through the Grapevine. What a coWINKYdink! Randomness at it's finest! Today I learned that the Temptations version of ...Grapevine is not definitive version. Then what is? I'm pretty sure it's Marvin Gaye, not the California Raisins. I actually blame the California Raisins for making me think it is a Temptations song. The Raisins are clearly modeled after them. There is a playlist on Spotify with 100 versions of ...Grapevine. That's crazy. Great song, still crazy. 3
Very big fan of this genre, kinda funky.
A 35 minute album feels like a gift after yesterday - and it’s a good album too! Favourite track: Runaway Child, Running Wild
Not for me, a few interesting RnB songs but nothing that stands out
Pleasant enough but no stand out tracks.
Not very good, not very bad
Very good record if you are already into this style of easy listening R&B from this era. Not my bag but it's a 3.
Just what you expect!
Others would probably give it more
Bra musik i affären!!
solid
Much more than motown.
Ideal lasagne making music. Such great tunes. Will need to pick up a copy when I find one.
4.6 Holy peak, fantastic album
Enjoyable enough and doesn’t outstay its welcome. The 9 minute song (something that I usually greet with trepidation) doesn’t really feel like 9 minutes.
