Reviews (page 2 of 12)
5 singers at their peak strength, drawing on what they do best while also pushing the boundaries of psychedelic soul. What more could you want? An outrageously good album and solid proof there should be more Motown on this list. (Although, most of the iconic 60s Motown recordings were released as singles, yet again revealing a problem with the album-focused list.)
SO GOOD FIVE STARS
Increíble y nostálgico, muchos feelings, ojalá no estuviera tan caro en vinilo
incredibly soulful and funky. makes me want to dance. it’s just so groovy
The Temptations did funk well! Love Cloud Nine! This album was a lot of fun!
Right up my Alley. Thoughtful but catchy lyrics. Layered vocals and harmonies. Interesting instruments and riffs. A delight for the masses.
1969. First full album after they fired their lead singer David Ruffin and replaced him with Dennis Edwards. Style change to psychedelic soul.
5/5
Classic for a reason
Awesome feel-good jazz, love that I've been getting so many of these, definitely a couple jaw-droppers in here too
woooooooooooow
Love it!!!
Awesome album!! The Funk/Soul just as I like. Love the Temptation Songs I like: Love is a hurt in’ thing, Why did she have to leave me, I need your lovin’, Keep on trying,
This album is a breath of fresh air. It is soulful. The vocals are smooth and the instrumental is hypnotic. I love their version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Just great music.
Great psychedelic soul album, I need a better copy though.
Short and sweet, hard to beat, loved it.
Smooth
Gran disco.
The Temptations for 9 songs on this album: wow! 🤯 Love sure is crazy!! 🫨 The highs put you on cloud nine 🥰⛅ and the lows can drive you wild! 😓🤪 The Temptations for 10 unrelated minutes on this album: kids, get ready for the funkiest psychedelic jam you'll ever hear about why you shouldn't run away from home.
incredible, amazing, never been done before or since. The pathos! The harmony! Short stories, most of these songs.
fire
So fun I love motown
Honestly amazing album. Every song was very good
Really enjoyed the album. Will be looking for this on vinyl.
need this one on record
Great album
Those iconic temptations baselines - NAME ANY ARTIST TODAY THAT EVOKES THE SAME EMOTIONS???
oh ya coool
love
Amazing! 5/5
Great album
Wonderful vibe
Good stuff
Classic soul album by one of the best , has Mrs Fitz favourite song on there top album
This album is so good, especially the opening half. Starts with a very classic funk intro, ripping you straight into the era, with Cloud Nine. A solid cover of I Heard It Through the Grapevine, folloeed by the masterpiece of the album Runaway Child, Running Wild. The story told is great and the funk is at its best here. The back half are a bunch of love songs about trying to get your girl back or to stop her from leaving, and some of the funk drops off, but that doesn't mean there isn't great stuff here. My favorite here is Hey Girl, which was almost enough to be my favorite from this quick album.
Groove e tranquilo.
sentimento de cafezinho numa manhã de quinta-feira. 5/5
I heard it through the grapevine that I was feeling fine on cloud nine jamming these tasty grooves.
Okay I love the Temptations, so I’m expecting to be wowed. We shall see. I enjoyed this album. The Temps will always have some of my favorite songs!
Although not their best album in my opinion (that would be "All Directions"), this is incredibly great funk, especially in the first half of the album. From the psychedelic funk in the opener "Cloud Nine" to their remarkably fresh take on "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", culminating in the timeless groovin' and jamming soul/funk of "Runaway Child, Running Wild", this album is a goldmine for lovers of pure funk music (which I consider myself to be). Although the album continues in their previous "Motown" sound in the second half, it certainly foreshadowed what was to come with their masterpiece "All Directions". Solid 5/5!
5/5 - i really loved it!!! Amazing album! Wanna purchase it!!!!!
Admittedly I had never listened to many of the Temptations songs before. I really loved it - the vocals are incredible.
I would never though to listen to this, really glad I did
легкий, позитивный, очень приятный альбом. очень рада находке!
Incredible production. I like formulaic but the formula works!
awesome!
That album art! Banger.
Temp-ta-tion
interesting
Good listen
Fantastic album
The Temptations were the best of the Motown era and this early album helped launch their career. A Cloud Nice of a production from start to finish.
Loved it. It was funky and fun. Some songs I already knew
Awesome. Peak funky dance hall music
Loved this! What a groove. Cloud Nine, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, Runaway Child Running Wild, Don't Let Him Take Your Love all added to Liked Songs.
I think everyone in my generation has heard at least one Temptations song, but Cloud Nine shows them taking things in a new direction. This album marked their move into funkier, more psychedelic territory while still holding onto the Motown polish that made them legendary. You can hear the influences of the late ’60s swirling through it, but it never strays too far from their roots. The result is fresh, funky, and full of energy - an album that makes you want to keep moving. There isn’t a bad track on here, which only reinforces how monumental the Temptations were, not just for Motown, but for popular music as a whole.
that’s type shi i fw
One of the best classic records!
I love the Temptations and certainly their more groovy funky (70's) stuff. This album has a little bit of cheese left from the earlier albums but is mostly amazing esp. the first three songs. It would almost make me dance (and that's saying a lot). This is really amazing musicianship (also the band who never get enough credit). My only reason to pinch a star off would be that this band is a bit of a construct of singers. They don't play instruments and the songs are also not written my themselves. But that's how it was done. I'll just imagine Strong and Whitfield (the authors) are band members, and I also can't blame them for using the Funk Brothers as a band! So still a five.
I loved this album. My fave genre. Love the funky vibes. Great harmonies. Raw power and passion. Kept me hooked throughout.
I enjoyed this way way much more than I thought I would. This is the first album from 1001 that I saved to my library.
Great album
Fantastic. Such memories. It back in my playlist
Banging - wall to wall jammer. Perfect friday album.
Beautiful
Cloud 10 hombre tunes.
Would you say you are on cloud 5 stars?
upbeat af
Funky upbeat! 7/10
It took me a couple of listens to convince me that it belongs in my library, but it does. Their version of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" is best enjoyed if one tries to disassociate it with versions by other artists, I think.
Creo que es uno de los géneros más guays de esa época. Me recuerda mucho a los juegos/ pelis de los años 60/70. El cantante tiene una voz muy guay y las canciones están muy bien en su mayoría. Love is a hurtin' thing mi favorita sin duda
Classic soul.
and i was tempted
A wonderful classic album. Feel good for any time
Very easy listening. Pretty outstanding album.
funk just rocks
Piola, una onda medio rara mezcla de nirvana con algo mas
Another gem <3 loved it.
It's just so damn good. Seriously they turned in a soul/funk Motown album, and it hits all of those marks so damn well. First off the Temptations are awesome, even their early stuff is good but this is just perfection. Second, They did a version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine that is a wild take and I'm here for it. Third, It's got some classic Temptations sounds on the back side of the album so if you aren't in the more funk from them you are covered as well. Seriously it's great, it feels of it's age but doesn't feel tired. A great album.
i really liked this! since i’m catching up i’m not spending too much time reviewing/taking notes on my albums. however, i knew after the opener that this would be a great set of tracks. super groovy and funky. peak for sure. 5/5.
I love oldies like this. Great album, lots of meaning and feelings are in this.
Absolutely fantastic. Surprised I haven't heard it before. A joy the whole way through. Best: Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me Worst: Why Did She Have to Leave Me (Why Did She Have to Go)
Ground-breaking psychedelic soul, joy and darkness combined
The Temptations are one of the pillars of Motown and one of my favorite groups from the that classic Motown era. They put out so many great songs and this album is absolutely stunning. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-cloud-nine-by-the-temptations?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
absolutely glorious
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Rock solid. Love teetering the line of Funk and Psychodelic. A long way from MoTown(which also rips). Not many groups can venture into such varying genres and crush - but here they are. Under appreciated on many fronts
Interesting album. More popish than their earlier work. But again, you can groove to it
Real problems and real emotions
Psychedelic soul. Still wonderful to listen to.
This album slaps! Also, I heard they have better ones!
Lekker!
Classic but no Jimmy
This is why I am doing this project. I was aware of the Temptations, but had never considered listening to a full album of there's, but now I don't see me listening to anything else but Temptations records for the foreseeable future.
Great album, plenty of beautiful harmony and vocal runs but a real grit to it too. The only thing I really dislike is runaway child, running wild, as it turns into almost a parody of the genre.
The coolest couple you know just invited you to a dinner party
George Russell talking
Great music and quite complicated! But the lyrics are very sad
Puro soul del más sabroso. Increíble, pone de buenas y hace que parezca que el mundo es un mejor lugar.
Fantastic album. Funk/soul grooves that prepare the way for Papa Was A Rolling Stone a few years later. They still have one foot (each, so 5 feet) in their Motown sound as well, so some of the songs are a blend of the Motown pop over their new funk/soul rhythm section sound. I think I have to go 5 stars on this one.
Funky soul. Was a bit jazzy
I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. Grew up working at the family business That was started by my Grandfather, down near The Packard Plant, and employed 3 of his children, One of those being my Father. 3 of my siblings worked for the same business until my brother passed away, and my cousin who was a co-owner, decided to sell the business upon his retirement. My sister and a cousin stayed with the business until there retirements, and a niece and nephew are still with that company to this day. My mother played for The DSO, and gave private lessons in her music room, to keep herself busy, when she wasn't at rehearsal, or performance. I'll also add that this album came out the year that I graduated high school, and chose to follow my mother's footsteps, and go on to study music, and was still doing work in the industry all over the globe, until health issues made me recently retire. Let's just say that I had a blast singing along to every song on this album. For so many reasons, this album gets a 6 star rating from me.
Heard it through the grapevine.
Solid funk and soul. The album has Norman Whitfield’s stamp all over it
A fantastic album that I listened to three times in one day (granted it's easy to do when the album is only 35minutes). A heck of a first step in this journey. My favorite track is "Runaway Child, Running Wild" minus the 10 second portion of a child crying. Truely a timeless album.
I waited a day to listen to this album because I wasn’t feeling Motown. But boy was I wrong. This album is Motown but it’s more funk, all genius. Enjoyed the hell out of the is album.
Perfect display of Motown..
Didn't expect the Sly Stone/Funkadelic sound. Beauty. Unmistakeable James Jamerson on the bass
Old school r&b. The title track was absolutely fantastic and the rest of the album was very enjoyable as well.
Great album, great version of Grapevine. Drums sound a little thin and hear mostly snare and percussion. Bass Guitar is nice.
You don't have to worry 'cause everything in life starts and ends as fast as the episodes a.k.a songs in this album. So let's groove. Perfect album for time traveling to the '70s.
Wonderful
AMAZING BEAUTIFUL HEAVENLY GORGEOUS
Really liked this album.
Absolute legends.
Weak for the temptations, strong for a group that's not the temptations
Gotta' love this shit. Reminds me of playing dominoes at my step-grandma's house while she chain smoked and let us watch Steven Seagal movies in the background.
Banger
it slaps. the cover of marvin gaye is maybe better than the original for me, which i already like :o
Absolutely classic album from a goated group that is filled with tracks that are either funk or Motown. I was either jamming or grooving depending on which style was playing at the time. It’s also wild that their cover of “Heard It Through The Grapevine” is the weakest track on the album. Bravo to this making the list!
This is what this is all about! What a gem. Loved this album and it’s something I would have never listened to before this. So funky! Great singing, great playing. There was a weird crying part that threw Frankie and I off!
this album is a pretty great encapsulation of why i love the temptations. their vocals are great and the production here from norman whitfield was absolutely groundbreaking for soul music of the time. although i would say that the two singles off of this are the most consequential (the title track and 'runaway child (running wild)' because of their great production and catchy, funky beats, the rest of this album is incredibly solid and really highlights the songwriting of barrett strong and norman whitfield. really, for me, the only blemish here is the somewhat pedestrian cover of 'i heard it through the grapevine' which is, unfortunately, sandwiched between two all time great temptations songs for me. but otherwise, i really love this album, and it is one of the temptations' greatest.
W sumie to bardzo dobre. Na pewno do posłuchania jeszcze raz. 5/5
Really solid album. Can’t wait to dive more into the temptations and see how they influenced 60s psychedelia
Really vibed with this album today
Funk, Soul
Funky, soulful, and deep. Yes!
The Temptations are one of those groups that as I grew up kind of perplexed me, because they had so many monster hits in different styles that dominated radio airplay for most of my life. I never really got my head around the career trajectory, having experienced a lot of their hits as one big amalgam of music in no particular order. I could probably entertain myself for months focusing my listening attention on their catalog. Now that I’ve taken a few moments to consider The Temptations and look into that history, I’m amazed to learn that that these guys continue to perform - having consistently released at least one album every few years since 1964! And in the early years, there were several years packed with multiple album releases. Remarkable! This album must sit near the top of that formidable body of work, although I will admit that I have a woeful lack of exposure to all but one other album from The Temptations. Cloud 9 is a favorite of mine, and getting to experience the incredible Runaway Child, Running Wild was enough to put my finger on the five star rating. I love this album and love The Temptations!
Classic timeless stupendous voices. Will never be surpassed.
You're goddamn right!!!
One of the best of that generation
Волшебная музыка. Очень приятная группа
Most Excellent!!!
4.5/5 Really fantastic soulful songs. Cloud Nine 4.5/5 I Heard It Through The Grapevine 3.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Runaway Child, Running Wild 5/5 (FAV) Love Is A Hurtin' Thing 5/5 Hey Girl 5/5 Why Did She Have To Leave Me (Why Did She Have To Go) 5/5 I Need Your Lovin' 4/5 Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me 4/5 I Gotta Find A Way (To Get You Back) 3.5/5 Gonna Keep On Tryin' Till I Win Your Love 4.5/5
Love old motown music
It's the Temptations. Shut up and listen.
Today has been a fucking Journey! This is fucking incredible. New singer, new sound, yet it is so fucking hot I love this. The back half of this is literally legendary. Hey Girl is amazing and just hits so hard. Why did she have to leave me is just amazing there is a moment where he sings "Only yesterday I was king on a throne" that moment the backing vocals cut out which gives it more emphasis and also they change key and it is so so goof and I don't care if it is covers or what THERE IS A 9 MINUTE SOUL SONG PYSCHEDLIC HERE WTF, and it is so smooth and dreaming and really digs into the vibe that the music world was giving. I think is my favorite Temptations record, it is just so so smooth and even the drumming is so contained. so much instrumentation. I am so happy I found this.
Classically wonderful
Every single element of this album is infused with creative flair, boasting some of the best, subversive vocals I've ever heard. The track-to-track storytelling is excellent and the vocal performances harmonize perfectly with the instrumentals. Listened to: walking through Prospect Park. Favorite tracks: Cloud Nine, Love is a Hurtin' Thing
The Temptations is one of the musical groups that has been on my waiting list for a long time. Then the day arrived and everything I heard met my expectations. The wonderful songs My Girl and Papa Was A Rolling Stone have been part of my life for years and this album gave me everything I expected and more. Sensational! What else can I say? That's my kind of music!
Couldnt stop tapping my foot from start to finish.
The Temptations update their sound to stay current in the psychedelic era and wind up making the best album of their career
why did she have to leave me e I gotta find a way <3
Incredibly, it’s a 5. Yes, the last 7 tracks of this album are a sort of stereotypical doo-wop affair reminiscent of “My Girl” more than the funk-infused and experimental first 3 tracks, but I love both sides of it equally. I think the doo-wop is just incredibly smooth, and even though it’s all just love songs, it manages to blend in that sort of late 50s/early 60s feel with a lot of their contemporaries of the era in a way that makes it feel kinda fresh and nostalgic at the same time for 1969, when Beatlemania was surely still in full swing. Those first 3 tracks are still really cool; namely Cloud Nine & the 10-minute centerpiece that is Runaway Child, Running Wild; yes, it doesn’t need to be 10 minutes, but it fills its soundscape pretty well and it stays pretty engaging throughout, even if it plays it pretty safe the whole way through. I can’t really explain why it’s a 5, but I think there’s just something about this sound that clicked with me super well; I don’t think there’s a miss on this album in terms of easy listening, and everything here is just catchy as hell to me. I feel pretty good with a 5.
cool
Love, great voices, and love. 9/10
Just gold
How do you even pick a Temptations album for this list? They have at least 8 four to five star albums in their catalog. As always their vocals are excellent. Solid.
Such a great record. Never heard The Temptations for a full LP's length. "Runaway Child, Running Wild" feels so wonderfully out of place for a 60s record, running nine minutes in an album full of tracks that otherwise average well under three minutes. Lush harmonies and arrangements, brilliant grooves.
Wow....soooooo good. Timeless and of its era at the same time. The title track blew me away- it was the funkiest tune I have ever heard them do. This amazing harmonies and the incredible arrangements. Beyond.
Well this was a treat, it was great to switch up the vibe with these oldies. I loved it. It was hard NOT to hear sounds from some of their other more popular songs, like My Girl, Aint no Mountain High enough etc. 5 stars
Loved this album. Makes you want to do some slow dancing.
Wonderful
nice!
This is an absolute bop of an album. I wasn't sure if I'd like the last half since it started to have break up sings but it was a great listen.
Fun, warm, groovy
Yeah, these guys are the real deal.
Motown did know how to make their art 👌🏼
Great tunes..loved the tempations always
One word: Classic
Amazing record. I think I listened through at least 5 times
It doesn’t get any better than old-school Motown.
Lyrics/Vocals- 5/5 Instrumentals- 5/5 Vibes-6/5 Overall 5/5 I absolutely love the Temptations and this album was amazing. Everything about it was just great, I genuinely cannot think of much else to say because of how much I enjoyed this.
Great harmonized melodies, and some funky funky bass lines!
very good
Classic!
Themes of love, growing up, drugs, losing love, reconcilliation in love, and winning love back. Just a classic album. A great representation of the the plethora of awesome acts Motown had to offer, this album was fun cover to cover.
LOVED this album. I've always been a fan of The Temptations, and this was a great reminder of why I have always loved them!
Love it
Great. I know it well.
Absolutely enjoyed every second of this album
Listened to it three times!
Vibes
5. Damn this is good. I didn't think i would like it as much as I do
Espectacular
Cool! Old Motown almost always doesn’t disappoint. This is not an exception. Very catchy songs that equally stand out from each other. I was slightly surprised by this being as good as it was! Awesome.
Really love
Every song is a gem. I’m sad I spent my life not listening to this album.
Funk and soul will just forever hold my heart. The Temptations have done it once again with this one. I was hooked from the instant I started this album, and it didn't let me go until the end. What a treat. Favorite track: Runaway Child, Running Wild
obsessed
👍👍👍
Awesome
The funk. The Motown. Such a great album to just vibe to.
Some solid funk and Motown, will absolutely be listening to this again sometime
Banger after banger. Cloud Nine is funky fresh from start to finish. Clean tasty bass
Unsung heroes of history: The Funk Brothers was the studio band for motown records during this period where motown records was re-defining soul and r&b and basically creating the playbook for american music for the next century. Soak in James Jamerson grooving the hell out of the bassline and Uriel Jones locking down the kit with that hi hat on the title track. try not to nod your head! oh to be a fly on the wall for these recordings...
Hard not to give this iconic album 5 stars
I love the temptations and I love this album cover and I’d like to get one of their albums for our record player but yeah big slay loved
So fun went by p quick
Strong funky numbers in the first few tracks, followed by Motown R&B. Love the James Jamerson bass lines as always
Bloody lovely for a chill quiet, cold morn
Awesome!
Absolutely pioniers
Just a little funk but a still solid feel of the past Classic Five
Very eventful songs, never boring, a lot of the interplay between the singers can be repetitive sometimes but i still enjoyed it all the way through the album, great framework for motown beats and feel. Great vibe altogether and really enjoyed that one. This is an easy 5 star for me
Sing-along favorites for all time
I have always loved the Temptations. 10/10.
overall rating: 8.5/10 favourite song: i heard it through the grapevine ( 9/10 ) runner up favourite: hey girl ( 8.5/10 ) least favourite: love is a hurtin thing ( 6.5/10 ) album cover: 7/10 vocals: 10/10 instrumentals: 9/10 would i recommend ? : i’d randomly bring it up to people , i don’t know any soul fans though other: i’ve never listened to soul before this album. this album is so fun, the vocals are incredible and the instrumentals are so catchy and funky.
classy soul
Fantastic album
Music for knocking boots.

Físicamente en mi casa, mentalmente en cloud nine
(rounding up to 5, because I want to rememebr to listen more to thise guys) Tempatations cloud 9 - tight. but ti not the GREATESt HITS... its a new sonbd maybe,.., makes me want more"1001" is a wide ranging tour and education, .. and even this is new for me. I know the name. thats it. ...You can enjoy the breakthrough unique sound and just imagine how amazing it would have sounded "in the day" when I captured the sound of that summer and excitement of the time. plus is beautiful to listen too. vocals. tapping beat and a sound so often imitated...
Wow - I was blown away by this - I was expecting some pretty generic Motown standards but the funk and soul really shine through. Love the bass vocals and the instrumentation as well.
Some of the original cool cats of music. What a group. I'm down for the groovy-ness of this album. Easy listening.
This album is amazing. The sounds are quintessential soul, the rhythm is tight when it needs to be and buoyant when it can be. The vocal harmonies are old school cool. I love the versatility of the musicians to play it slow and keep it cool or ramp it up and chug.
Classic Motown. Each voice is rich and unique.
Ace!
This is a hell of a good album. Top 10 tracks throughout, amazing theme, and perfect music. 5/5
You may have to resort to YouTube to find this as it doesn't appear to be listed on either Tidal or Amazon Music. Once you do find it though, well, what a cracking lite album. The music, the voice, the pace - all spot on.
It was good, at least the few tracks I could find on streaming services!
A but more intense and “issues” driven than your classic “My Girl” Temptations. Predicting some of the classic sounds of the 70s quite early. But hey, when I see Temptations I do a 5 star
ovindo
Funky fresh soul
A really enjoyable pop album infused with just the right amount of Soul and funk to make every song enjoyable. A great Sunny days album walking about and dancing. Cloud Nine, I heard it through the Grapevine and Runaway Child, Running Wild are my favorites, super strong opening for the apbum... 5/5 for my tastes.
My favorite album so far. Great influence to modern music.
Classic.
Absolute fire. Shame a number of the tracks are greyed out on Spotify…
Even though I’m not normally an R&B fan, this album is incredible. The vocal harmonies are perfect, the emotions are a vibe, and the soul can be felt in every note. Just listen to it and tell me I’m wrong. Standout songs are I Heard it Through the Grapevine and Why Did She Have To Leave Me.
Great album, would love to own the vinyl
very cool
I have never heard any of the songs on this album. Some have less than 100k listens on spotify. For all wiki says about this being a wildly successful album and it earning them a grammy, has this been lost to all but the super fans? Only their previous super hits get play any radio play? Anyway, this is one of those gems I do this for. From the first notes I knew this album would crush it.
classic album
Dude..... i LOVED this.
Unfortunately only 4 songs available to listen on Spotify. I found the rest on Youtube. A great album, very funky. I love it!!
Voi juma, et kannatti palaa näihin Spottarissa-vajaata-levyihin! Mä ehkä joudun ostaa levysoittimen ja tän albumin (jos löytyy ja on varaa). Saatana. Huh.
Weird version of Grapevine but still interesting. Amazing playing and great vocals. Can anyone in the world dislike classic rnb?
Another great discovery from this endeavour is that 1969 is most likely the greatest year in music to date. Perhaps common knowledge to some already. Fuck there was a lot of good music pumped out to see off the decade.
Had to get a free trial with Apple Music to listen to this. And very glad I did. Fascinating, almost 'concept' album bordering soul and psychadelia. Definitely caused me to re-evaluate The Temptations, and for the better
4.5/5. Quite solid. some lengthy cuts, but no skips
Perfect Temptations album, very diverse songs that never get bored: great album in every aspect
The temptations got me on Cloud 9. And I think the main guy is a Eunique
Great. Loved it
Mesmos cantores de My Girl
Dope man
Really enjoyable. 9/10
Pleasantly surprised by this album. Sort of thought they were all my girl type music (not that thats bad, i just dont need a whole album of it). but this album was funky and cool
10/10 based af
Funky, groovy, great album. Couldn't stop myself from tapping my feet to just about every song. Favourite Tracks: Cloud Nine, Love is a Hurtin Thing, Dont Let Him Take Your Love From Me
This little pitstop on the evolution of soul into funk through Motown is everything I needed. It's uplifting and melodic but also raw at times. The title track as an album opener is such a heavy hitter.
Not available on Amazon music
It was interesting love to dance to that kind of music...
Very fun
Beautiful album. Can definitely see why it would make the list
Great album. Too bad it's not available on Youtube Music.
good album
Great sound. Truly an album of its time.
What a back catalogue
Loved it! So many good songs
Good.
Me gusto un chingo este álbum tiene una buena vibra y en escala de fumable esta mega top
This album is great, all around fantastic.
Great album. I wasn't familiar with individual songs, but it's a great mix.
Soul
ok!
Fantastic tracks but they go on a bit.
Good but sounds dated to me
No nyt!! 🔥🔥🔥 Just pohdin ääneen edellisen jälkeen kun eksyin kuuntelee pikku Michael Jacksonin versioo You’ve Got A Friend et ”ei meil mittää motownia oo ollu listal?” ni heti albumilistan henget vastas 🙇🏼
good, groovy
Surprised by how funky the front half of the album was. Don't really associate the temptations with the genre, but it works really well. The back half is more traditional Motown, which is fine, but not as good as the beginning.
spoko
Lush
I'm a big Temptations fan. I find the 2 album choices on this list for the group interesting; I would have though it would feature one of their earlier records. This one's pretty good. I've never heard that version of Grapevine before.
Wonderful melodies and harmonies mixed with funky bass and beats mashes for a wonderful album. Though, every song was either about lost love, loving a cheater, and/or winning back said cheater. Seems like they really struggled to get over whomever they’re singing about.
Börjar som en riktig funkrökare men tappar lite edge mot slutet. En kraftig 4a är det likväl.
Mycket hesa, slitna röster!
It's a nice album, although I didn't find it memorable.
This was way more fun than I thought it was going to be. Shoutout
Love me some Temptations
I have always loved the Temptations and the Motown sound in general. "Run Away Child..." and "I Gotta Find a Way" are highlights. I have never been a fan of their version of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine." The algorithm has been pulling some incredible album art for us the past few picks!
Amazing classic i loved the instrumental sound stage and the isolation from the others throughout the album. Extremely upbeat and expressive.
Fantastic
Nothing like a little Motown to get the day started
enjoying this a lot so far, great vibes.
From start to finish just trash.
1/2
It is fucking absurd how much generational talent was on the Motown label, this is the first album of theirs to show up on this list so far, BUT I'm expecting to listen to a double digit quantity of them. okay, that aside, GOD I WISH MEN WOULD HARMONIZE WITH EACH OTHER AGAIN. Bring back belting beautifully with your boys. But seriously, their voices make me feel joy again, im soaring, the day is suddenly idyllic. I should be peddling on my bike alongside me new dad Dennis Edwards without a worry in my heart. OKAY, vocals aside, the instrumentals are top notch. ESPECIALLY the drum and bass, they're sitting in a tree k i s s i n g fr fr. The first leg of this album is probably perfect, "Runaway Child, Running Wild" being the standout. The last minutes of that song where the funk the fuck out is divine, chills man, chills. mmmm 4/5
Technically, Cloud Nine sounds like a 50s group trying to pivot to the 60s while the 70s is nipping at their heels. But I bet that's not the primary vibe you'll get from it if you're not thinking about it. Sure, the reimagining of Heard It Through the Grapevine makes it a bit hard to avoid, but generally it's hard to hear past this group's skill as a vocal combo. So while sure, this feels a little on the edges of psych and definitely on the edges of funk, this doesn't feel exactly like classic Temptations, it does not feel forced or phoned in or like old people trying to do the youth thing. It sounds like the Temptations. And that's a good thing to sound like. The Temptationy stuff is good here… can't mess with a good formula… but the key track feels like “Runaway Child, Running Wild,” which builds into what could be a defining statement of what the guys were trying to do here. It's long and epic sounding, and you don't quite realize it until you get to about minute 7 and think “huh, this feels a little longer than the average motown song.” The Grapevine Experiment comes closest to a falter here… the arrangement is simply not as strong as the classic ones… but this gives a slate of songs up to par with the classic era, right alongside some more interesting sides of the band. I think it's probably just under a 4*, but no reason to round down.
7/10
fun album! cloud nine is a banger some iconic love songs
#relisten

Might relisten to figure out why I liked it so much.
Not my favorite of their albums but very good. The cover of I heard it through the grapevine is so subdued. Weird.
Lovely little album.
Lovely album
Another wonderful Motown soul record. I think all of these are pretty amazing. This one was meant to be revolutionary, trying to copy Sly Stone and them.
I didnt think would be good
Przyjemne dla ucha.
A true classic. But not music I would listen to every day.
I quite liked it! maybe more of a 3.something than a 4 but overall good vibes. didn't rly like their rendition of heard it thru the grapevine, however i actually enjoyed the long song quite a bit which is saying a lot. had fun listening to it
3.5 Very enjoyable listen, a lot of classic Motown sound. Nice easy listening, was nice to have in the background while I worked. I found the first track, "Cloud Nine", the most interesting & unique on the album, it was really cool. Towards the end of the album I felt less interested, the songs were all a bit slower & more generic Motown-sounding. Not necessarily bad, but not as strong as the start. Their cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" wasn't my favourite (Marvin Gaye did it better imo), and the child screaming sounds in "Runaway Child, Running Wild" were jarring lol
truly magnificent representation of what it feels like in my head whenever Im cruising around on a july summer day at like 11AM. quite the fun shower album and very grateful to have been put onto this one. feels like a I'm on psychedelic drugs watching a flower bloom through the pavement cracks in the best way. drink: coconut water accentuated with some sparkling water, rose petals, raspberry jam, and a piece of a brass sax. rating: 8.58
Obviously some great songs in here but didn't grab me much. Still worth a four star
Come for "Cloud Nine," stay for the half-and-half record that follows. This one is a groundbreaking piece in the Temptations' catalogue as it adds funk to the psychedelic soul sound they had been so seminal in development. Don't be fooled by the opener and 9 and 1/2 minute "Runaway Child Running Wild;" about half of this album is plain, by-the-numbers Motown, which is still a fairly high bar for quality. And really, nothing could follow up those two giant songs so may as well play to your strengths both new and old. I can see this was probably a harder choice of an album to include than most, as the Temptations were always more of a singles act, but they're just too important as a group to outright leave off a list of significant albums... Key Tracks: Cloud Nine, Runaway Child Running Wild
Back in January, I remarked about how The Temptations' All Directions could be characterized by one impressive song surrounded by easy-listening filler. The same could be largely said for this earlier effort, Cloud Nine, which was their foray into psychedelic soul. The first side of this record is pretty much the main attraction here. The opening title track is an impressive bop with the wah-wah guitars and driving beat, as the members exchange lyrics about the struggles of poverty. "Runway Child, Running Wild" is an equally striking nine-minute epic about a child running away from home and finding it difficult to survive on their own, only hampered by having the kid actually cry during the instrumental bridge, even if it is thematically appropriate. Rounding it out is a surprisingly good rendition of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" that worked with the members' harmonized vocals. As for the second side, again, it's easy-listening, largely inoffensive filler. Not a bad track per se, but aside from a smooth rendition of Lou Rawls's "Love Is a Hurtin' Thing", the rest can be chalked up to gooey, sentimental love songs that don't seem to offer anything as close to outstanding as the first half. Hell, even their take on Freddie Scott's "Hey Girl" reminded me way too much of The Temptations' earlier hit "My Girl". Between this record and All Directions, it feels very indicative of how Motown, under Barry Gordy's direction, could be distilled down to making an album out of one or two tracks. It's a practice that certainly worked, but limited what an album could be, at least until Stevie Wonder took creative control and changed the game. Still, I had an alright time with Cloud Nine. The album may have peaked in the first half, but I still got a kick out of it.
