5/5
Another great album. Listened through this a few a times a couple of years ago. Three tracks (Inspitation Information, Aht Uh Me Hed, Strawberry Letter 23) on the album remained in constant rotation for most of the year afterwards. I Remember this as being psychedelic and colourful while remaining grounded. Look forward to a revisit. Inspiration Information Extremely cool and funky. Great bass playing. The switchup for the chorus is delightful. I really like the back and forth between the sharper and smoother vocals. The guitar adds great rhythm. Great summer song. Underrated guitar solo. I do think the song is mixed really well. Fantastic. 5/5 Island Letter Deep and crunchy bass. Soothing psychedelia. Colourful and bright. The vocals never overshadow the instrumentation. Final instrumental part spanning the final 2 minutes of the song lifts it to a level above. All the instruments sound great individually as well as in tandem. Fantastic. 5/5 Sparkle City Great buildup into the instrumental. Amazing bass tone. Solid rhythm. Rich and powerful, takes its time. Lyrics paint a detailed picture of a late night cityscape. Great use of brass instruments. His voice isn't mindblowing, but I still think it works well for the style of music. The bass is just stunning. 5/5 Aht Uh Me Hed A moodier track. Instrumentally super catchy. Rhythm is great. The additional instrumentation is lush and beautiful. The switchup is super catchy. The keyboard line is just so catchy. Psychedellic. Scratches that itch perfectly. Amazing. 5/5. Happy House Tight. Sounds effortless. The keys are magical. Lushly produced. It being too short is my only complaint. 4.5/5 Rainy Day Jazzy. Very fitting name, sounds like a rainy day. Incredibly soulful guitar. A little psychedelic disruption adds an extra element to the song. Great. 4.5/5 XL-30 An early use of electronics. It's an interesting experiment. I enjoy the background licks and keyboard lines. Sounds a bit dated. Found it interesting. 4/5 Pling! The effect on the keys give it an almost ambient feel. While the drum-machine's mechanical rhythm give the ears something to catch onto. And while subtle the bass sound is the real star. Calming, meditative. An ocean of sound. The subtle saxophone adds a lot with just a few notes. Ahead of its time. 5/5 Not Available Back at it with a combination of a fantastically catchy duo of bass and guitar. Interesting structure. The addition of disco elements make for an interesting closer. Solid ending. 4.5/5 Bonus tracks. All of them are exerpts from Shuggie's previous album 'Freedom Flight' which is also a great listening experience in its own right. I'll rank them below, though their rating won't affect the album's final rating, even if I'm pretty sure it won't matter much. Strawberry Letter 23. Classic. While the cover is probably more well known I still maintain this as the superior track. I think it's produced immaculately, and extremely catchy. Fantastic verse structure. Lush and soulful chorus. Explodes into great psychedelia, with an almost hypnotic instrumental passage. Fantastic. 5/5 Sweet Thang Just effortlessly cool. Bold, psychedelic weird. All the instruments are doing something interesting at any time. The additon of the vocals ground the chaos. Experimental in a way. Well performed. Evokes a warm summer evening. Fantastic. 5/5 Ice Cold Day Dream Fun tempo. Marvelous bass performance. The organ is also a highlight. The vocals on the chorus are a bit weak. The panning effect sounds a bit dated, but in a charming way. I think it's structured well around the guitar. Great. 4/5 Freedom Flight Soulful, I enjoy the sparseness it starts of with. Slowly adding new sounds and building on the what I can only imagine is a mostly improvised guitar track. The psychedellic jazz elements create a vivid sonic landscape further enhanced by how the track is mixed. I find the way it grows and builds upon itself very stimulating. The bass towards the end is just enchanting. The length does not bother me one bit. Fantastic track. 5/5 Hilariously underrated artist. There's just so much talent there. From the songwriting to the mastery of several instruments, to the use of electronics. Absolutely fantastic record with loads of highlights throughout. I think everything here works to create an approachable but deep and stimulating record full of colour and life. Really close to being a perfect record for me. Will remain in my rotation for a while. Just a pure vibe through and through. Fave track. Aht Uh Me Hed Least fave track. XL-30

Michael Jackson
1/5
First impression pre listen: I've always been a bit lukewarm on MJ. I doubt that will ever change. As talented he is as a performer his songs have never personally done much for me. I'll give it a fair shot, but I'm honetly not expecting much. Maybe it will be somewhat refreshing to approach MJ from an album perspective rather than through overplayed singles. Bad I mean it's pretty catchy and the funk elements are implemented implemented in an approachable way. The keyboard solo is good. The backing vocals are kinda obnoxious. Goes on for too long. Fine. 3/5 The Way You Make Me Feel Ugh not this bloated mess. Just kinda boring. The repetitive chorus gets on my nerves. Goes on for way too long. Annoying drums. Strongly dislike. 1.5/5 Speed Demon Hate the panning vocal breathing effect. I kinda like the synths. Has a good bassline. Decent guitar part. I don't like the car revving. Does sort of lose me by the end. Average. 2.5/5 Liberian Girl Insanely cheesy production. Cheesy lyrics. MJ is creepy, it's hard to ignore when he's moaning and whimpering in your ear. Weirds me out. I guess the vocal layering creates some cool harmonies. Awful. 1/5 Just Good Friends Awful intro. The synths sound beyond horrible and the drums haven't aged well. Weird mixing. I guess there's a decent groove to be found in the bassline. Busy and messy. There are some vocal moments here that are pretty impressive. Strongly dislike. 1.5/5 Another Part of Me Good groove. Decent chorus. Love the bass on this song. The horns are also a decent addition providing some largeness to the track. Decent. 3.5/5 Man in the Mirror Preachy celebrity bullshit from an alleged paedophile, exactly what I want to hear. I love being told to change by Michael fucking Jackson of all people... Annoying chorus and cheesy production. Aged horribly. The gospel elements are pretty cool though. To all who find this empowering, more power to you. I still hate it. Awful. 1/5 I Just Can't Stop Loving You Nah brother please stop. Cheesy 80's ballad with dated production and over the top performances. Awful. 1/5 Dirty Diana Great opening verse. Establishes the atmosphere well and build up to the explosive chorus in a satisfying way. Yeah the instrumental behind the chorus is kinda overblown (mainly the guitar) but it sort of works to create drama. Mysogonistic lyrics even if it tells a story. At least the song is listenable. Fine. 3/5 Smooth Criminal Honestly as much as I've been disliking this album so far I'm not able to hate Smooth Criminal. This song is a banger. Iconic opening. Fantastic bassline. One of the catchiest, most memorable chorus of all time, resolves perfectly. Love the vocal layering. Great, funky guitar solo. No critisisms. Fantastic. 5/5 Leave Me Alone It's okay. Kind of forgetable but perfectly listenable. Don't love the synths and the riff gets a bit obnoxious after a while, but the chorus brings it back. Average. 2.5/5 Final review: As much of an entertainer MJ was, his stage presence, slick dance moves and iconic style all overshadow the content of his songs. Throw in some classic music videos and you'll get one of the most memorable artists of our time. His adlibs and "Michaelisms" definitely do create a unique character. So what the hell went wrong here? "Bad" is just... bad. The production on this has aged horribly. The songwriting is cringy. And MJ himself veers closer to obnoxious than he does cool. Throw in some outside factors (allegations of pedophilia) and it's very difficult to find him likeable, especially when he's spouting messages about "making the world a better place". It's cheesy, it's repetitive and it sounds so insanely dated that it veers on ridiculous. Besides "Smooth Criminal" there's very little here that's worth returning to. There is the occasional cool groove or funky bassline, but they're mostly attached to less than stellar songs in the first place. Basically a chore to get through. Even with low expectations going into it, I still ended up disappointed. 1.5/5 rounded down to a 1/5.

First impression pre listen: Got some idea what this band is, but I don't think I've ever heard a song from them. Ocassionally hear them mentioned alongside bands like Blur and Oasis, who I'm at best lukewarm on. I have a feeling this might not be for me, but the only way to figure it out is by listening. Individual song notes: Mis-Shapes Very distinctive vocals with the thick English accent. I like the buildup and the over all structure of the song. The chorus definitely sticks out. Strikes me as very theatrical and grandiose. Decent. 3.5/5 Pencil Skirt Uncomfortable lyrics and vocal performance. Weird and creepy. The instrumental sections sound quite good though. Really enjoy how spacious it sounds. Dislike. 2/5 Common People Proper working class anthem innit. Luv me a smoke and pint at the pub. Jokes aside I find the storytelling while kinda smug, really entertaining. The chorus is extemely catchy and the vocalist really sells his performance. A fun song detailing the struggle presented in an on the nose style. Great. 4.5/5 I Spy Oh so dramatic. I like the cinematic opening. Dark, almost gothic sounding. Love the progression. Ominous. This character is awful. Conceptual, strange and engaging. This theatrical style is really unique and fun to follow along to. Great. 4.5/5 Disco 2000 Immediately infectious with the classic sounding guitar riff. Fun lyrics. Love the idea of the "distant year 2000" in the year 2025. Very catchy chorus. Nostalgic and sentimental sounding. Satisfying ending. Great. 4.5/5 Live Bed Show Very conceptual. Of course there are sexual implications, it's always that with this album. Bizzare, but entertaining I suppose. Decent. 3.5/5 Something Changed Sentimental and contemplative. Kinda pretty, has some genuinely thoughtful lyrics. Love the instrumentation on the final chorus, however cliche it might be. Decent. 3.5/5 Sorted For E's & Wizz What the hell does that mean? Clever and nuanced take on drug culture. I like the hollow synth in the background. I like the implications of the somber ending. Good. 4/5 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E A nightmare to type out manually, why can't it just be spelled normally... Really like the atmospheric, futuristic dark forest vibe. Breathy spoken word vocal jumpscare. Great buildup. Okay that's why. Again, very conceptual. Genuinely sounds confused at times. Fun bassline. Good. 4/5 Underwear Oh so horny. Very visual writing style, makes it really easy to follow along with. The phrase "semi-naked in someone elses room" is really fun. Lobe the synth. Good. 4/5 Monday Morning A sad and frantic existence detailed in a very direct way. Catchy and resonant. I like the contrast between the cheery tone of the track and the melancholic lyrics. Decent. 3.5/5 Bar Italia Don't really got much to say about it. It'a a dramatic, theatrical ending. Sums up the album in its grandioseness. Decent. 3.5/5 Final review: I came into this expecting some middling 90s alternative rock with maybe a couple of decent to good songs that I'd probably forget about in a week. This wasn't that. It was instead a consistently entertaining diverse selection of songs. What I found most interesting was how stylized and distinct every song on here was. While their sound could seem limited, the quality of the songwriting makes up for it by introducing new structures and themes at a solid pace. I enjoyed the drama and the theatricality of the performances a lot. It made me feel like I was inside a very personal description of the UK in the 90's. The vocalist sort of plays this very sexual, inadequate feeling, spiteful character. He's got this sort of dirty and bleak, miserable outlook, which forms a distinct atmosphere to the sound. At the same time many of the songs have some cheeriness to them, which contrasts well against the dark backdrop, giving a feeling that everything will eventually be OK. There's contemplation and sentimentality, but also joy and relief. This is expressed through artsy and conceptual segments, though also through poppier elements such as catchy hooks and relatable language. It's honestly a ton of fun, and other than some occasionally questionable sexual lyrics my only real complaint here is the lack of a real defining moment. There are songs that definitely stick out, but none that truly have me enchanted. However the quality is pretty consistent throughout so it's no big deal. Blew every expectation out of the water, will definitely check out more stuff from them. 4/5

Never heard of this. Listened to a few of thei most streamed tracks not on this album as preparation and I cannot say I'm too impressed. My expectations lay somewhere in the middle for this one, hope to be pleasantly surprised. In It For The Money Not sure about the production. Sounds kinda compressed. The guitars at the start are pretty cool, has a decent atmosphere. Evolves in a bit of a negative direction for me. Has this very stereotypical Britpop writing style in the chorus, which really comes across as stale and overdone. Average. 2.5/5 Richard III The bass tone is pretty good. The production style really isn't my cup of tea. Has some decent energy in the vocals. Can't say there's much to care about here. Decent outro. Average. 2.5/5 Tonight This sounds horrible. Hate the vocals at times. The horns are awkwardly implemented and sound toneless and overly sharp. Not great. 2/5 Late in the Day Why are the vocals so quiet? Bland guitar. The keys are so much louder than anything else. Boring vocals, lacking any character or depth. Bad. 1.5/5 G-Song Uninspired, boring, bland, uninteresting, monotone, soulless. Skip to 3.27 for the best part. Did not like. 2/5 Sun Hits The Sky Has a sliver of energy of some sort. Draaaaaags. Has the most unecessary instrumental break in history. The synth sounds goofy as all hell over this overblown, overpowering production. Hate how there's not any space anywhere in the mix. Pointless. 1.5/5 Going Out What a garbage vocal effect. That's the only notable thing about this song. The unlikable and whiny vocals somehow got more unlikable and whiny. Formulaic and repetitive. Like being blasted right in the ear with an airhorn. Annoying. 1/5 It's Not Me Actually has some interesting instrumentarion. The guitars ar pretty alright. I'll be generous to the vocals here. Think they work well with the lyrics. Average. 2.5/5 Cheapskate Has an actual groove to it. Simple but effective. The chorus isn't too bad either, has some power to it and feels fairly impactful. Decent. 3.5/5 You Can See Me Another alright instrumental. Has some depth to it with the switchup for the chorus. The instrumental post the second chorus is really fun, shows some great synergy within the band. Fine. 3/5 Hollow Little Reign Lacks some dynamism, feels like it's just repeating itself without really going anywhere. The solos don't cut it for me, they just don't have much impact as they feel sluggish and generic. Average. 2.5/5 Sometimes I Just Make You Sad Those grunts sound awful. Broken carnival ride type instrumental, doesn't help that it overpowers the vocals. Latin guitar is a cool inclusion I guess. Don't like the vocals yet again. Did not like. 2/5 Can't say I liked that very much. Absolutely hate their production style, and I don't care for their songwriting very much. Ends up being a boring, messy piece which generally just melds together into this uniform blob of blandness which rarely manages to either excite or impress. Britpop will never be my cup of tea, genuinely I cannot understand the appeal. Like most of their genre contemporaries they suffer from these aggressively nasally, whiny vocals that somehow are both too loud and too quiet at the same time. I will give them credit for their use of different instruments, their bass generally sounds pretty nice, and their use of horns and keys produce moments where they build upon their sound into something that's almost interesting. But those guitars, they just are so damn overpowering, and so obnoxiously loud at times that the other instruments don't really get a chance to shine. Pair that with many tracks leaving no space in the mix, and the aformentioned issues I had with the vocals you're left with a headache inducing 43 minutes. It's not the worst thing in the world. Generally being inoffensive, with specks of charm scattered throughout it, but in the end its issues become too much for me. 2/5 Fave Track. Cheapskate Least fave track. Going Out

This one is hard for me to rate as I've heard songs from this album played over my parents speakers for most of my early life. Jeff's voice, and the general sound of this album has always had a special place in my heart. I'll try to do individual song ratings, but I can't promise I'll always be able to provide suitable commentary. Mojo Pin Angelic. Brilliant piece of songwriting on all fronts. Doesn't get much more emotionally evocative as this. Powerful and beautiful. One of the greatest ever. 5/5 Grace Transcendant and large. Instrumentally deep with an amazing vocal performance on top of it. Love how powerful the drums sound and how crisp the guitar is. Gets stuck in my head really easilly. Fantastic. 5/5 Last Goodbye That bass is a pretty great foundation for the instrumental. The sound of this track is lighter and less condensed than the previous two songs which makes for a pretty nice palatte cleanser. The song closes itself out tremendously well, the final minute really elevating the song. Great. 4.5/5 Lilac Wine A pretty little song that really makes a highlight of his voice. Delivered beautifully. Great cover. Good. 4/5 So Real A great piece of alternative rock with a soild instrumental which gets surprisingly heavy at times. Has a great, simple chorus, performed to perfection. Great. 4.5/5 Hallelujah The definite cover version of this song for me. Does plenty of justice to the original while being unique and in an entirely different style. Doesn't replace it, but exists in a different space where it can be enjoyed for what it is. Beautifully composed and performed. Fantastic. 5/5 Lover You Should've Come Over One of the best love songs ever. Yes it's a bit cheesy, but come on. 5/5 Corpus Christi Carol Beautiful rendition. His falsetto is haunting and ethereal. Simple and effective, especially following the explosive finale to the previous song. Great. 4.5/5 Eternal Life Following up the previous song with the a decently heavy electric guitar riff. It's an alright alternative rock track, but it really doesn't have the same songwriting quality as previous tracks. The instrumental meanders a bit and the vocals are lacking in interesting melodies to really make it stand out. Is a bit too long for its own good. The performances are still stellar however. Weakest track on the album for me. Decent. 3.5/5 Dream Brother Has some psychedellic elements in the instrumental, creating a cloudy, dreamy atmosphere. Adds to the diversity of the album while being an interesting experience of its own. The lyrics have some feel mystical and strange at times, and he does a lot with his performance to enhance their effect. Great 4.5/5 Forget Her The vocal melody on the chorus is really good. Has some bluesy elements, feels really cold and broken. A really bitter sounding performance. Love the drums and the keyboard, adds nice texture. Also really like the bass. Amazing closer. 5/5 This is a fantastic record through and through. Everything falls into place for a varied and quality-wise consistent piece with fantastic vocal performances and an instrumental which really knows what its doing. Powerful and emotional, really pushing the limits of what this type of music can be. 5/5 Fave track. Mojo Pin Least Fave Track. Eternal Life
