In The Court Of The Crimson King
King CrimsonCover: 4 It's ok. It took several listens for me to even pay attention. Not my style of music but it was ok for what it was.
Cover: 4 It's ok. It took several listens for me to even pay attention. Not my style of music but it was ok for what it was.
Cover 6 Got bops. Never heard this before. Pretty good 90s EDM.
Album cover is meh. 1. Catchy. Great song. Nostalgic. 2. Ok. Pretty flat throughout. No ups or downs. 3. Also, meh, overall, generally not making much of an impression. 4. Radio hit. Unique interesting, like song 1. Good beat. Fun lyrics. 5. Their biggest hit I think. Also funky, fun, great beat. 6. Dark. Mysterious. Like it. 7. Daniel Johnston-esque. Reminds me of a country/blues singer I can't place right now. A tempo change! 8. Fun. Tempo changes here and there. Guitar solo. Head bopper. Bluesy. 9. Space oddity synths. So David Bowie. The chorus saved this from being boring. 10. Also good. Fun. OVERALL: the best songs are on side A with two of the weakest songs. 7/10.
Cool cover 1. Into. 2. Cool opening. Chill. About the lyrics more than music. Political. 3. Music is jazzy. With a flute. Lyrics can be a bit corny re "don't mess with me," "I hella rap bruh." Ok. Just not original. 4. Cool drum opening. Another "we cool" but it's good and a bop. Nice. 5. Into. 6. Funky. Master blaster. They said that. But s head bopper. 7. Also good bop. By now though the promise of the album title and the first song re political issues is so far lacking. They are talking more about themselves. 8. Nother shot caller song. It's good but .. 9. Ridiculous song. Harry met Sally? 10. Same shit. Not a bopper. Don't put your kids on the album. J/k. It was cute but the song was meh. 11. Funky but sounds same. The chorus lifts it up some. Otherwise, doesn't stand out. 12. Finally political. But otherwise lyrics aren't too creative. An ok song. 13. Spoken poetry. Cappin'. Ok. 14. Linda, you a birch. Wherever. 15. Don't care. 16. Doesn't stand out. 17. Funky best. Instrumental for the most part. OVERALL: An ok album. Some fun tracks but not for me.
Cover is ok. Boring but not too lame I guess. 1. Fun song. A cover? Also over played in so many movies. 2.ok. Breathe esque. 3. Great blues song but without the blues. So... 4. Ok. I suppose I have to be in the mood but then I'd just listen to Weyes Blood or something. 5. If this way sung by a better blues singer ít world rock. It's OK as is. 6. A cover of a great song. Doesn't improve on the original but if you can sing then it's still good. And he can sing just fine. 7. Another cover. Decent. But honestly this song is a campy novelty. 8. Good cover of a good song. 9. This is funky. I like it. 10. Ok song. OVERALL: An average album with one or two highlights.
Nice enough cover. 1. Ok song. 2. Nice, beat. Their most famous. Good song. 3. Good song. Decent lyrics. 4. This is a miss, but only barely. Like the concept but the simplicity of the lyrics kills it. 5. Also a miss and also almost. 6. Ok. Passed by without mm making much of an impression. 7. Ditto. 8. Nice song. Lyrics are good ish 9. Also good night vbe great if I'm in the mood. OVERALL: A relatively decent album but most of the songs didn't hit, not for me.
Iconic cover. 1. Actually like this. Took a few listens (and several years) to realize this. 2. Great song. 3. Great song. Is this about Nico? 4. Also good song. 5. Fun song. Interesting guitar. 6. Good song. Also about Nico? 7. Good. 8. Ok. 9. Ok. 10. Is Bob Dylan influenced by TVU? An ok song. 11. Funky guitar. They actually bother to play guitar more than usual. They really don't care about instrumentation at all. OVERALL: An excellent album. Liked it more than I remember.
Cover is whatever. 1. Into. 2. Funky. Fun. Good song. Maybe great. 3. Funny. Also sad. Also good song. 4. Good song. Entertaining. 5. Radio hit. Still good. Lyrics are not 💯 but close. 6. Good song. 7. Ok. I'm no gangsta, but a cool song. 8. Ok. 9. Music is interesting. I kinda like it. energetic throughout 10. Interlude. Cute kids. 11. Ok. 12. Interlude. It is what it is. 13. Meh. 14. Great song. Great lyrics. Great beat tempo. Probably didn't need JAY-Z. 15. Interlude. This one's kinda stupid. 16. Meh. On second listen, I like it. Mellow. 17. Interlude. It is 18. Upbeat and fun. Better than ok. 19. Postlude. 20. Into. Ok. 21. Ok. Just gott fun, I guess. 22. Interlude. For over two minutes. FYI, he's a cool guy. Never cheated. Except that one time (and probably every time). Sweet bitches, am I right? LOL. 23. Funky, fun. This shit is funny. 24. Whatever. 25. His play or something. And you is a ho, bitch. Is this supposed to be serious? 26. Also, whatever. Does Andre know he's fucking hilarious? 27. LOL. Ok. 28. Radio hit. Great song. Oddly, doesn't fit the album because it's not absurd. 29. Also great. Also, like the previous song, like Andre put down the pipe (or picked it up) and wrote a song that wasn't entirely "huh?" Taking a look at the credits, Big Boi clearly tempers Andre's weirdness. And can make his. 30. Interlude. He's being intentionally funny, I know this now. 31. The opening to The Love Below is weird and there's too much of it before getting to "good" music. I don't know if Andre knew this, but Big Boi definitely did. This is a pretty good song but a bit flat. 32. Whats. 33. Not bad but not great. 34. Again, I don't think Andre is the hit maker. This is whatever. 35. Weird topic, if course, but a good song. 36. Letter. Whatevs. 37. Jazzy. Classical . But seems like filler. 38. Norah Jones! Good song. Maybe great. 39. Chill. I can read a book while this plays. So... 40. Whatever. OVERALL: Big Boi might be more grounded than Andre 3000. Speakerboxxx half has ok songs. With one great song. The Love Below half has great songs interspersed with whatever shit. Making this an average album.
Ugly cover. 1. It's an ok song. Can be fun. However, I almost hate it. After a couple of listens, I got used to his singing voice. I hate it less. 2. Actually not bad. 3. See 1. 4. This song is trying too hard to be deep. 5. Ok. 6. this isn't bad. 7. Deep-eaque. Otherwise acceptable. Sort of. However, very skippable. 8. Same. These songs remind me of Bard songs. I don't really care for the tale. 9. The title track. So hippie. It's ok. Skip though. 10. Kinda waiting for this to end. No, not kinda. I'm waiting for this to end. Skip. 11. Ok, I guess. OVERALL: This is a skip for me. I'm fine having listened to it but not necessary an album to listen to before I die. It's a no for me, bro.
Ugly cover. 1. Reminds me of Foreigner but not as good. Like the guitars in the chorus but not the chorus The break is also meh. 2. So they mimic/ mock popular music of the time. The musicianship is good. This song is either too weird or not weird enough. It's kinda ok. It's interesting in some spots. I just don't care. 3. After the stupid intro it's actually good. Fun but still... There's so much better music. 4. Not bad. 5. Not bad. I mean not horrible. Can be fun if in the mood for this shit. I'm not atm. 6. Same. 7. Like the opening. That's it. Stupid lyrics. 8. Whatever. Dumb. 9. Whatever. 10. Funky head bop. Stupid shit also. OVERALL: Not interested. There's good musicianship but they're too concerned with making fun of music than making good music.
Cover ok 1. No. 2. No. 3. No. 4. No. 5. No. 6. No. 7. Almost but No. 8. No. 9. No. 10. Meh. 11. No. 12. No. OVERALL: Fantastic album! Not! Every song is about nothing. It's campy for the sake of campy. Weird and different for the sake of weird and different. If it's about the music then make it instrumental. If it's about the lyrics then make them "about something." Even better, do both. Maybe I just need to be in the mood. This just isn't my cup of tea.
Cover. Is what it is. 1. Funky music. Love it. Don't hate the lyrics. 2. Ah, the Dr. Feelgood from back in the day! An ok song, really. 3. Main theme. Cool song. Still, just ok for me. 4. Instrumental. Very seventies. Cool jazzyness. 5. Not great lyrics but otherwise ok song. 6. Ok. 7. Good song. Works with the movie, specifically. 8. Instrumental. Ok. 9. Title song but not the main theme? Also cool. OVERALL: songs work for the movie but outside of that, most of the songs are just OK.
Interesting cover. 1. On second listen, kinda like it.. 2. Decent song with ok lyrics. I do like it. 3. This can pass with barely any notice. Meh. 4. Like it. Unfortunately true lyrics. 5. Not bad. 6. Meh. 7. Like it 8. Meh. 9. Whatever. 10.Ok..11. Meh. OVERALL: I just couldn't concentrate. When I did, t was ok. I think with multiple listens I would actually like this album, but I won't ever love any of the songs. Not a must.
Cover: 1. 1. No. This list really leans to only a certain type of person. Not at all open to other forms of music except here and there. 2. Ok song. I'm not the target audience for this list though. 3. There really are albums I like, like Blue, Joni Mitchell. Or Grace, Jeff Buckley. James Taylor. Etc. Why am I only getting this crap? I absolutely don't need to have listened to these befor dying. 4. Puff Puff Pass. 5. Next. 6. Is music stupid? 7. Well is it? Is it dumb, dum dum boink or no? 8. No. It's not. But yes. Blegh. 9. What happened in the 60s that this was done to humanity? No war? Was that the problem? 10. No. I'm out of the mood. I rather listen to backstreet boys. 11. So impatient. Might have to quit this damn list. 12 Yell you children to make a new edition of this book. .
Cover: 7. I don't know much about jazz. I've liked live jazz music. I could get into this. The bass sounds all over the place. He plays like how Elaine Bernice dances. Maybe I don't get it. OVERALL: it's ok. Almost there, except the bass throws me off
Cover: 5 Can easily fall asleep to this. They're all ok. Nothing stands out to me, not on first listen.
Cover: 6 I can't just jump into a genre and listen to it as if with fresh ears. I have to be in a mood. Generally, classical, jazz, any instrumental music I only use while reading. On occasion I might listen to it for pleasure. Very rarely.
Cover: 7 Ok overall. Seems to be another experimental music album. There's only one, maybe two songs that I liked but nothing special.
Cover: 8 Starts with the familiar songs. The first two are slower than I remember but still decent. I liked Weanie Beanie and Watershed. Fun sons. Lyrics are nonsense but fun.
Cover: 6 This had some decent songs. Title track is the best. Overall, mostly ok songs.
Cover: 8.5 A classic that I've actually heard of. Excellent music overall. A good chill album.
Cover 6 All songs are golden. Thunder Road and Born to Run are great, familiar. First time listening to this in it's entirely. Glad I for did. Thumbs up.
Cover: 5 Great album. Not all are great but some great songs I've never heard before. Highlights: Wearing the Loved On Look, Power of My Love, and Suspicious Minds. Also, Only three Strong Survive and In the Ghetto.
Cover: 4 It's ok. It took several listens for me to even pay attention. Not my style of music but it was ok for what it was.
Cover: 5 Have to do multiple listens. The first listen didn't do it, but the second, I got into some of the songs. First six tracks are really just one long song. I guess the second half would be one or two long songs also. It's pretty cool, if you've got the time. The concert is available on YT. Very much worth it if you like this album.
Cover: 7 Great album. Several radio hits, spaced out perfectly. The other lesser known are also good, so it's doesn't slog things down.
Cover; 5 Great album. No skips.
Cover 7 First half is good. My mind wandered during the second half. Would help with a second or third listen but for now, it's OK
Cover: 3 Good experimental chill album. Not spectacular, at least on first listen.
Cover 6 Good songs. Overall, a good album but not great. Many of the songs sound like typical rock-era songs. Highlights: (She's A) Runaround and I Know a Girl.
Cover 7 Some good songs. Maybe one or two great songs. Overall, ok.
Cover 8 An ok album. on first listen, only one or two songs caught my attention. Over all, no bad songs but nothing great.
Cover 4 Some good songs. Musicianship is awesome.
Cover 5 The Doors meets Led Zeppelin. Great album.
Cover 6 Heard the name before but never listened. Didn't realize they were more of an 80s hair metal band from the 90s. They came out in the wrong decade for sure. Not bad. I'm no longer into that music but growing up I definitely was a "butt rocker." Now, I rarely listen too this genre and mostly for nostalgia. Otherwise, decent album.
Cover 6 Decent songs. Good album from an influential band. Better upon second listen.
Cover 6.5 Great album. Queen meets Scorpions.
Cover 6 Used to love them. I'm over it. Still a good album but I probably won't return to it.
Cover 7 Damn some of the songs are looong. Guess that was the trend back then. At least there are only seven songs. Good album. In the right mood, yes, very chill, nice. Kick back and enjoy.
Cover 6 Good album. I know some people love this one. I wouldn't say I love it. The theme is consistent throughout but not one I would listen to often. Marvin has a lot of "great" songs spread out over a lot of "good" albums.
Cover 7 Interesting. Can be fun. Don't know if I'd come back to it again. Maybe.
Cover 5 The songs aren't horrible but too hippie-ish for me. Some cheese lyrics. Some of it is cringey although with good intentions I'm sure.
Cover 5.5 Great album. Fun songs. Generally not my era but really like this album.
Cover 7 Overall, not bad. Some really cheesy songs though. Not really my thing, though they're good unto themselves, I guess.
Cover 6 Some fun songs. Not King of Rock but good.
Cover 5 Liked this more than I thought I would but still this doesn't belong on this list.
Cover 6.5 Doesn't entirely live up to expectations or up to time. But it's not 80s "butt rock" or 70s disco which faired worse as far standing the test of time. Granted both disco and butt rock found their niche here and there, but 90s alt has yet to be scorned and reviled at similar levels (save one or two rock groups who people simply enjoy hating on (Nickelback, etc.). Overall, I'm glad I listened to this album. I didn't care for it when it originally came out, but I was less open than I am now.
Great album. Some of my faves are not the radio friendly ones but I like those too.
Cover 7 Fun album but I probably wouldn't listen to it again.
Cover 6 Great songs. Could've been a great one but I can't stand Ooby Dooby. Ugh. Don't care for My Baby Left Me either.
Cover 6 I feel like the songs could be reordered as a chronology of a relationship. As it is, they seem a bit out of order,. But overall a good album.
Cover 5 This doesn't belong here. An ok album but no way a must listen.
Cover 4 Velvet Underground meets the Doors. Like it more then I thought I would. Good album. Great even.
Cover 7 Like the guitar. Funky.
Cover 6 Interesting and different. In a good way. Didn't know Pharrell Williams was part of this group. Cool.
Cover 6 I like African music like Baba Maal. This is right there with it. Solid album.
Cover 5 Great music basically about nothing or whatever just tunes to bop to.
Cover 8 Iconic album. A strong album. At least a good start. Dies a bit toward the end even though those are still good songs.
Cover 6 Got bops. Never heard this before. Pretty good 90s EDM.
Cover 7 Nice mellow album. No bad songs really except that a lot of it seems to melt together, like one song. He also tends to sing exactly the same in several songs despite the guitar being slightly different. They're basically Pink Moon over and over again, which is a great song, unto itself. Anyway, decent but not revolutionary or all that necessary.
Cover 7 Rid of Me but not 4-Track Demos (Harvey's reinterpretation without interference from the producer, supposedly)? I'd call this Suicide Punk. There's languid darkness, agony, anger,, angst. I really like this album but sometimes it's too intentionally muddy and dumbed down (the drums are are just bashing) as if mimicking 70s 80s self-recordes underground punk, which were cheaply done with crap equipment and not necessarily a lot of talent (musicianship-wise). i get it. It's an aesthetic, one I like actually but not always and only for so long. .
Cover 5 Not familiar with their catalog except Red Red Wine, and that didn't get me curious enough to check them out. Didn't realize how political they were or could be. It's nice relaxing album.
Cover 6 Great album. Can listen all the way through, no skips. "Hotwax" is sorta whatever but tolerable. That's probably the weakest song for me. Otherwise, great album.
Cover 7 Great songs, great album. No skips for me. Musicianship is average/ decent (nothing spectacular) but lyrics are good. The overall effect however is a great album
Cover 7 Good album. No bad songs but only two Paranoid and Iron Man are repeats. Others are ok. Maybe OK+.
Cover 8.5 Yep. Grew up with this album. All are great songs.
Cover 5 My favorite. Great. Nuff said.
Cover 6.5 Started out strong-ish... then meh... and finally... stupid. Thanks Iggy! 👍
Cover 6 Yes! Fun songs though no real substance. So... Just for fun only
Cover 7 Good but several songs sound similar / bleed into another. A great dark anthem though.
Cover 7 Not a fan. Sometimes Tom Waits can seem pretentious. There's some of that here. Not much though. Still, he kinda annoys me.
Cover 6.5 Chill. Didn't hate it.
Cover 7.5 Great love album. Totally dig it.
Cover 6 In-studio live. I prefer when others cover his songs. Anyway, this was a good album.
Cover 7 Great album.
Cover 5 Name of the band is kinda dumb but love this. Have never heard of them. Fantastic album. The music is a mix of... Seal + Sting and someone else.
Cover 5 Not her best but still a good album.
Cover 6.5 Fun soundtrack. Not sure if I've heard of before. It sounds familiar. I liked it
Cover 6 Love Stevie Wonder's voice. This album took me several listens to get into. Initially I just thought it was not for me. But the problem with music is, depending on my mood, an album can either be 3 stars or 4 stars, even 5. So my opinion for any album should only be considered with a grain of salt. One of his best albums despite not havung many radio friendly hits.
Cover 5
Cover 7 Funk rock! Yes! Love it! Groovy, Funky. Not Rock n' Roll. Rock n' Soul!! Definitely will check it their discography.
Cover 7 I suppose this would take additional listens. First time listening, I didn't care much for it. Too many rap songs are about themselves. I I tend to find these boring and overplayed.
Cover 7 I don't listen to a lot of hip hop lately, so I'm probably not the best person to judge. For one, I generally don't care for braggadocio songs (how many ways can you say "I rock the mic?"). However, throw something like this with funk and groove and I'm in. I prefer the second half of this album with one or two from the front half. Overall, a good listen and I'm not mad I got to discover them.
Cover 7 This album is tied for first with Black Celebration as my favorite DM album, with BC edging just slightly higher because Fly on the Windscreen was my first DM song. I remember being 9 years old and repeatedly stealing my sister's cassette single of that song and just listening to it to death, fascinated by it's darkness. It's been my favorite song of theirs ever since.
Cover 6.5 Thankful for the introduction to this album. Although I don't think another cover of Imagine was necessary, given it doesn't significantly differ from the original. Then again, I don't understand the language, so maybe Imagine is in keeping with a theme. I don't think there are any bad songs on this album (perhaps a benefit of not understanding the language), and some actually really good ones, but it is a bit long (1 hr 18 mins). I let my player continue after the album finished and liked some of his other songs also. Great discovery.
Cover 5 The first time I listened to The Cramps, many years ago, I wasn't impressed. Same with The Misfits. They just sounded like the same 50s rock n roll song on repeat but with a kid's monster movie theme. However, they can be a fun listen. I didn't know I'd include them on a list of must haves though.
Cover 7 Lyrically, there's substance. Unlike much of NIN and other industrial music. It's surprising that they were doing this as early as 1980s. A decade too soon. Personally, I'd welcome a remastering to improve the production quality, although that might be some of the charm (for some people). Better than good album.
Cover 4 Like most glam rock albums, whatever the lyrics, they barely mean it. In other words, there's not much import or...soul? It's pure entertainment. And that's OK, if you set your expectations, you're less likely to be disappointed. This is a fun, entertaining album but not perfect (can't stand Bring Back That Leroy Brown).
Cover 7.2 Unfamiliar with their catalog, aside from Song 2 ("woohoo!"). This was just ok. Nothing really stood out to me. I mean there was some interesting songs but I not worth a re-listen.
Cover 4 Meh. The radio hits. That's it.
Cover 7 Two of the most known songs are indeed the best of this album (Straight Outta Compton and Fuck the Police). Not all of this album is political but if you've been indoctrinated against inclusion and education, this probably isn't for you. Other highlights: Gangsta Gangsta, 8 Ball, Express Yourself, and Dopeman.
Cover 6.5 You take the drums and guitar of almost any song and put it to any other song and it's virtually the same. A lot of hardcore punk is like this, as is most metal. That doesn't mean I don't like this album or this style of music. Nowadays, I tend to be more picky, so this album has less affect on me than it did in my teens thru my 30s. I gradually developed a certain musical taste. Although my enjoyment of metal hasn't gone away, it's diminished somewhat. Angry lyrics alone won't do it anymore. There a few not-so-formulaic songs on here. Standouts are Psychosexual, Vendetta, Snuff, Child of Burning Time, Vermilion Pt. 2 and Til We Die (I guess, . Other than these, there are no bad songs just a couple of whatever.
Cover 6 Songs like an off Broadway musical. It's interesting and I don't necessarily here it but I Soyny see myself listening to it again.
Cover 7 Crazy this album was hated when it came out. But tastes change. It got it's due recognition. I was surprised how much I liked it.
Cover 5 First half is great. Second half iis ok.
Cover 6 Good album although I drifted when it became just instrumental, even though it was fun and interesting. Overall, I only truly enjoyed a couple of songs.
Cover 7 Glad he could prove his talent. Makes it pretty obvious he was being held back by the Beatles. The only issue I have is the length. I was more forgivable when I was younger. Now, double albums take too much time. Even if they're good. That doesn't reflect poorly on the music though. That's a me thing.
Cover 8 Iconic 90s. This is probably more nostalgic based but it's a great album.
Cover 6 Decent but likely won't come back to listen.
Cover 5 Clear influences from several artists (Elvis, etc ) but who did they themselves influence? Basically, not very original, even if you like it, which I did. I did not love this album though.
Cover 4 Nothing really stands out. These sound like standard 90s alt but they're basically all the same song (at least musically). Lyrics are ok
Cover 7 Perfect for sad nights alone.
Cover 4 Really liked the 4 opening songs. Iggy Pop is a super douchebag but The Stooges are a fun listen. Musically simplistic, lyrically too, but fun none the less. But by no means great.
Cover 5 Never heard of them. Great for sleeping or studying. If I'm trying to stay awake though, not for me.
Cover 7.5 I've tried several times to get into jazz. The issue isn't that I don't like it. It's that I'm rarely in the mood for it. So jazz is ok. Sometimes it's actually nice to just chill with, so yeah I listen to jazz on my record player but maybe only twice in the last five years. Anyhow, this was a nice listen. I might consider this my next jazz album purchase. If I'm so inclined.
Cover 4 Not my cup of tea, generally speaking. This is a jazz adjacent album, not so much country or country rock, though there are some old school country here (Don't Let the Stars Get on Your Eyes, etc ). It might be nice to listen to on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee, or summer afternoon with a glass of lemonade out on the porch (or staring out of the window if you don't have a porch). It's a lazy morning/afternoon jam.
Cover 6.5 Uh... First heard Neil Young in the 90s when I was in highschool. I hated his voice. FUCKING HATED it. So, after 35 or so years of not even giving him a shot, this comes up, my first Neil Young album. I braced myself and got some tissue in case my ears started to bleed. His voice is not great. When people who can actually sing cover one of his songs, that's basically how I prefer my Neil Young, interpreted through a lesser-grating, non-whiny, non-nasally voice. But listening to this, I actually didn't mind it as much. Granted I'm older and my hearing isn't what it used to be. In the end, Not As Grating on My Ears as I Thought It Would Be.
Cover 6 If you hate hippie stuff, you'll probably want to pass. However, I kept an open mind. Not a huge fan of 60s 70s folk, but I don't hate it, necessarily. This was a good listen. They cared about musicianship and not just lyrics. There no, or little, political grandstanding, if that matters to you. I did actually like some songs: Train Song and Hunting Song.
Cover 5.5 Love Sade (FYI, they're a band named after the lead singer). But this isn't my favorite of their albums. It's a good listen though. Jazzy, samba, r&b, beautiful voice.
Cover 5 Not my favorite of their albums but the generally a good listen.
Cover 5 I only found out about her because of Stranger Things. Growing up, I only had the radio for music. So, if it didn't play on the radio, I was less likely to know our hear new music or learn about new artists. I'm jealous of people who had older siblings or other family or friends that could introduce them to underground or music not otherwise on the radio. Anyway, Kate Bush never made it to the radio waves where I grew up, so she remained unknown until I was in my thirties, and even then I only knew her name from passing conversations. Not until Stranger Things (in my late forties) did I actually hear anything from her. There are some songs that I like and maybe some day I'll look more into hey catalog. This album, though, didn't entice me to do that today. It's ok. Didn't love it. Didn't hate it either. They're we're one of two that I liked.
Cover 6 I like what I have listened to but most seem somewhat forgettable. There are a couple of songs that I like but overall just ok. However, I am interested enough to check out more of his music.
Cover 5 I haven't been in a hip-hop/rap mood in awhile so I haven't been listening to much (occasionally Kid Cudi, etc ). I never got into 50 cent. His radio hits were fun but not enough for me to actually bother looking into his albums. Surprisingly, I liked this album. Still, most of the gangsta raps aren't for me, though they might have good lyrics or good beats. Just can't relate but I get it.
Cover 4 Le Freak is a fun enough song if it comes on the radio or something. It's not one I search for or ever have some desire to listen to. I won't necessarily skip it if it's in a playlist either. The rest of the album is ok but not very rememberable.
Cover 6.5 Although they sound completely different, whenever I hear the name "Iron Maiden," I think of either Judas Priest or Megadeth. Probably because of the imagery. Megadeth I know. And really enjoy. I haven't really given Iron Maiden or Judas Priest enough time. Like my To Be Read list, my To Be Listened list keeps stacking higher and higher. However, I've now gotten at least one Iron Maiden album out of the way. And I do like it. It's funny how much more tame this style of "heavy metal" is, like Kiss, which was once considered loud noise. I was also never a hige Kiss fan either, although I've tried and there are songs here and there that I do like. That's basically why I haven't bothers with Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. They're too old sounding, I guess. Yet, it do like oldies and 70s music. I don't know. I guess it's just not for me.
Cover 5 It's ok. I mean, in the right mood this is a good album, great even. I don't I'll come back to it though. I wouldn't necessarily skip it if it were playing though.
Cover 6.5 Huh. The last time I listened to Arcade Fire was when Funeral came out and aside from one song (Rebellion), I never got into them. Their most streamed song on Spotify, The Suburbs, is kinda boring to me, at least after first listen. However, I do like several songs. In fact, I really like several songs. Guess I have been missing out. Faves: Modern Man, Empty Room Half Light II, and Sprawl II. This list is not exhaustive. I like most of the songs on this album but 16 songs is a lot of songs for one album.
Cover 7 It's a good album. You've first listen. Upon re-listen, it's a great album.
Cover 5 Generally not a fan of experimental groups (Beefheart, Tom Waits, Yoko Ono). I do very much like those that have a semblance of musicianship and understanding of a good beat (Primus). I might not be verbalizing exactly what I mean, though. Anyway, this album leans toward Primus, though they sound nothing like Primus. In other words, they at least restrain themselves from going completely off the edge. Unlike Primus, I'm not interested enough to look into their discography.
Cover 6 Electronic? Pop? It sounds very 80s and 90s R&B and pop boy band influenced. Despite they're having four members, it sounds pretty simplistic. Probably could have gotten away with just two members. It's not that bad really. It's like boiled chicken. Or unseasoned... anything. I don't hate it, but why? I guess I just don't care.
Cover 6 One of the best albums in history. I don't listen to much Michael these days but I was a fan even into his 90s and early 2000s music. During that time, though, I preferred Prince. Mini rant: there's some jackass on Spotify going by the name "Prince" and one of Prince's live albums (the artists formerly known as Prince, that is) shows up on that dude's discography. He can likely thank this for why he has 6k monthly listeners. Spotify has an issue where that happens with artists of like names. They apparently don't care and it's been an issue for years and they don't seem to be interested in fixing it. Anyway, if you haven't listened to this album (Thriller) already, then whatever. You don't have to like it, but you probably don't love music cuz you're a stupid poser.
Cover 5 Mini rant: a lot of stupid, generic covers. There's nothing particularly wrong with this cover, it's just whatever. It's not meant to be art, and, it seems, not meant to attract attention or evoke anything. Clearly, it's just a statement: "This is an Aretha Franklin album." So boring. Anyway, this album opens with a great song, if not a little short and repetitive. Another mini rant: 99% of the time, I don't care for "Bonus" or "Deluxe"versions of albums, especially digital versions. Almost always they just throw in demos or live versions of the same songs that aren't good enough for their own separate album. I'd prefer a whole live album or a demo-only version album (if that's what I was looking for). Adding this stuff onto an album doesn't make it better or new. I often don't feel I'd miss out on anything. I might listen to them once or twice (if I'm not paying attention), but am rarely surprised. They're whatever tracks. Thrown on so the album doesn't look like just another reissue, but to no real affect. Money grab. That's it. If course, but we'll deluxe. But many. This album doesn't follow a theme, at least not the order of songs. So there's no overall story, which is pretty much on par for a lot of albums. Throw in a bunch of songs in whatever order. These are great songs, though. Having a theme and some sort of logical order of songs makes the listening, for me, flow better. Going from Chain to Money to People to Niki just seems slapdash. Unto themselves, the songs are excellent. Together, they're a playlist of random songs by the same artist. If feel like she knew she was Aretha so no other thought needed to be done when making an album. It just had to be her. Which, as far as sales went when this first came out, was probably true. And to be honest, I don't always take that into account when reviewing an album, unless the disregard for the order or theme, or lack thereof, becomes an obvious issue. It became an issue for me with this album, almost immediately, so I wasn't looking to have issues. It just became immediately obvious upon the first transition for song one to song two and then continued throughout the album. Again, I love this album but I can't give it a perfect score as a whole. If an album is not considered a single work of art, then I can't give it five stars. But this is so close. 4.5/5.
Cover 6 Almost didn't like this album. Seemed to be missing something. Like it was almost Morrissey or almost Queens of the Stone or almost Oasis Age but neither Morrissey, Queens or Oasis. I listened to it again. I'm not good at listening to something once and determining if I like something or not. I often need to listen to an album 3 or more times. Not even twice will do. Which sometimes makes reviewing albums a great chore. I hit the "like" button on maybe two songs but overall the songs were decent.
Cover 5 Really haven't done a deep dive of Bowie. Growing up, my initial impression of any artist was mostly from the radio. Dancing in the Streets (1985 - I was ten) with Mick Jagger was a horrible introduction to Bowie's music. So I never looked further. I don't think this album helped. I do intend to look further, because it's David Bowie and people are like "he's a genius" or whatever. But this was only ok. Nothing particularly awful, but nothing stood out to me either.
Cover 7 Maybe this is what Leonard Cohen / Jeff Buckley were singing about in Hallelujah. That chord! It's in there somewhere! Imagine hating this and God's like "You don't get it, Bro. I'm unknowable." And then walking away convinced this was a classic worthy of a top 500 albums list, much less (more?) 1001. Maybe this is why there are atheist. Seriously, calling intentionally playing poorly "polyrhythmic, multi-octave, and polytonal" doesn't make it good. It's not genius either. I mean we can literally all do that. I can karaoke and if no one likes it, just say "it's polytonal, shit stick!" Or go to Alaska with the the intention of listening to walruses "sing." People say that shit about Jackson Pollack paintings, as if it's so easy they can also do it but do you have paint? Well, even the "unhoused" have shopping carts and cardboard boxes, so Pollack is literally that much harder than Beefheart, so shut your bitch ass up. Yeah this is anti-establishmentarianism at its most absurd. Don't want to play the same pop crap you hear on the radio? Then don't. Hate talent also? Check. What does talent and conformity have to do with art? That's the statement here. Want to be artistic because you're not? Then piss on a wall and have you and your friends stare at it for an hour. No talent with the guitar or triangle? Slam your face into the kitchen counter and your friend can "listen" for five minutes as you slowly regain consciousness and then tell them it's a song with a five minute interlude. It's art. It's subjective. They're are no boundaries. There are no rules. Keep an open mind! If it pleased the Lord, then what the fuck is wrong with you?
Cover 7.5 One of my favorite albums, having grown up in the 90s, so this isn't really a neutral opinion. To me, this is the quintessential alternative rock album. It starts here. Then Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. I was 16, listening to butt rock like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, etc. Lyrics didn't seem to matter. I barely paid attention. Then these guys came out and blew my mind. Of course, after a few years of deep, meaningful, and often depressing music, people started to pivot. And then happiness returned with Sum 41, The Offspring, blink 182, etc. I've since learned to be open with most music, though I tend to gravitate to towards rock-oriented music. I'm babbling. This isn't a memoir. Anyway, great, great album.
Cover 6.5 Fun songs. Nothing too standoutish for me but I generally like it. Not sure I'd listen to it again.
Cover 3 I was not familiar with most of these songs. Any songs of The Who I came across were mostly from TV or movies. Never took the time to check them out. Initially, I wasn't in the mood for long songs (rarely am) and some of these are over 6 or 7 minutes. Was getting really impatient. Mini rant: Spotify often doesn't have original releases. Sometimes, like this album, they only have deluxe and/or expanded versions. I prefer to listen to the original release for reviews and to see if getting the vinyl is worth it, but it's not available on Spotify, so... Perhaps if they made it more obvious which songs were added that'd help (otherwise I just assume the last few songs were the ones added - they usually are).. Anyway, despite my impatience, I listened and ended up liking it. The musicianship was great throughout, even songs I initially skipped due to their length (I got over myself and re-listened to them). I'd say the nearly 8 minute Magic Bus from the Extended Edition is my favorite. The second half of A Quick One... saved that song and I nearly quit listening all together. My least favorites were Summertime Blues and I've heard My Generation too damn many times to be tolerable to me. Likely will always skip that song tbh. 3.5/5
Cover 6 So all the songs kinda sounds the same. I can only assume this was a pretty easy album to produce. It's a nice sound overall but very "one note."
Cover 7 I think this is her most accessible album, althrough it's pop jazz, which was never really popular (minus this album and anything Norah Jones). In any case, thematically, her most neutral album (less overt feminism). But not her best (unless feminism hurts your feelings). For that, I prefer Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Or When the Pawn..
Cover 4 Not bad.
Cover 4 Meh.
Cover 6 Another artist that I wish I'd listened to sooner. This album is pop folk. Sometimes she sounds a lot like Sheryl Crow (maybe more folksy). This album might be as good as Sheryl's Tuesday Night Music Club. It sounds like it could have been a follow-up album. So if you like Sheryl Crow, you might give this a try. FYI, her sister, Veronica Williams, is also very talented, though I'm not familiar with the entire catalog of either.
Cover 5 Some great beats. But generally, as for the topic of many of the songs not for me. I just don't personally have an interest in the subject, even though I can see the catchiness, etc
Cover 4 Generally ok but biting spectacular. It's a solid album and the songs go well together. 3.5/5
Cover 4 Ok. Kinda alternatively. A bit of the Doors, some Beatles, and Pink Floyd, though they were contemporaries so I can't claim one or another were influences or not. Unfortunately, The Prunes kinda fall short of said artists. While the Electric Prunes are a good enough band on their own, the similarity with other aforementioned artists just makes we want to listen to them instead.
Cover 4 60s folk rock of not my jam.
Cover 7 Pretty surprised but I like this album more then I thought I would.
Cover 7.5 Their most iconic album. I prefer Use Your Illusion Ii but this is a close second. When UYI first came out, I want initially sold on it but over time it became my favorite GnR album. Contest Democracy is a flop, FYI. Anyway, this is a great album and definitely on my personal list of greatest albums of all time.
Cover 4 I can only think of Ross Geller playing his. Innovative music at Central Park with the dog barking and car crash sounds. I don't hate this but despite them being innovators of the genre, I prefer the people they influenced rather than them themselves.
Cover 7 Although I liked their radio hits, none of them made me want to check them out beyond that, so this album is sorta new to me. I suppose the lead singers voice can also be grating to some people. I don't mind it. Honestly, I don't think I missed out on anything. This album was ok. I wouldn't mind listening to it again but it won't be on heavy rotation.
Cover 4 Interesting and fun listen. Ended really liking a couple of songs and even looked further into his discography. Very cool.
Cover 4 There are some great songs on this album but honestly despite it being one of Marvin's most beloved but this isn't one I tend to come back to. I do like it. Don't necessarily love it. I think this would depend on my mood.
