Listened on the drive home from Hecla. Liked his vocal range. Nice and short. Don't have a great comparison point because I don't know much of his other stuff. Didn't blow me away overall. Good record though!
Listened at home. Just super fun. First half definitely stronger than the back half.
Watched while making dinner and cleaning up. Honestly thought it was boring through most of it. I like Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 a lot but didn't really feel the rest of it. I've heard a bit of their later releases and liked them quite a bit more.
Listened while walking and playing Ball x Pit. Really liked her vocals and lyrics. Only ever heard Rehab before this and was really impressed. A modern take on a classic genre.
Listened on my drive to Selkirk. I mean it's considered a classic for a reason. Incredible storytelling, top notch musicianship, classic harmonies. Somehow never really heard much of The Band outside of The Weight and was pleasantly surprised.
Listened to while on a walk with little one. Groovy baby yeah!
Listened in the car and while cleaning the kitchen. Never listened to Costello before. This one really grew on me. Started hearing the through line from Bowie to Costello to They Might Be Giants to Barenaked Ladies and more. Excited to hear more!
Listened to in the car. These albums are the exact reason why I wanted to do this project. I would have never heard this album otherwise. Sounded like a precursor for a lot of modern indie, like Geordie Greep, and genres like City Pop. Couldn't give it 5 stars because it's a bit of a weird posthumous compilation but really loved it.
Listened on the drive to and from work. Certainly not a record for anyone with a weak stomach. But if you can get past the misogynistic and homophobic character acting the messages of celebrity worship, media hypocrisy, and male loneliness are as relevant today as they were in 2001.
Listened while driving running errands. Good lord by the end of the second track I was begging for it to be over and I had another hour and a half to go. Boring songs, trite lyrics that I couldn't discern from the poor delivery and mixing, embarrassing narrative set dressing, self indulgent yet amateurish improvisations. At times I thought I was hearing a Spinal Tap parody but I was missing the joke. I feel bad for any kid who's Dad subjected them to this drivel growing up. Don't do drugs, kids.
Listened while cleaning at home. Love getting these records that I never would have come across with this project. That said, I didn't love this one. It's beautifully made, but not exactly something I would reach for again. Glad I listened to it though!
Listened while driving and cleaning the house. What a treat it was to revisit this one. I'm completely biased because Radiohead is my favourite band but I really enjoyed listening to their Brit rock roots again.
Listened to while playing with my daughter. Having only ever heard Fairytale of New York previously I found myself entranced by this record. The instrumentation, the folksy harmonies, the biting humour, I loved all of it and I think this record is going to enter my regular rotation.
Listened while making and eating lunch. The best thing about this album is the beats, production, and Jay-Z mastery on the mic. The lyrics really have not aged well and the overall message I got from this album was "I'm the best, I get all the women, I'm the best" which didn't exactly resonate. Still a great record to listen to.
Listened while playing with my daughter. Listened to the Deluxe version up to and including Halloween. I need to preface this by saying that Grunge is really not my thing. I get how this album paved the way for Nirvana and Pearl Jam to break out into the mainstream and I totally hear and understand the importance. I get it all, I just didn't particularly enjoy listening to it.
Listened while getting new winter tires put on. Way ahead of its time. I think the mixing was a bit weird on the version I listened to on YouTube music. Maybe a little bit too long but crescendos to an incredible ending with Watchtower and Voodoo Child. nWo 4 life
Listened while playing Ball x Pit. I get that this guy is the voice of a generation but man was this boring from front to back. Now I know where to turn when I'm having trouble falling asleep. The Girl From Ipanema isn't looking at you, Frank? She's probably covering her drink when you're near too.
Listened while playing Ball x Pit and cooking dinner. I don't want to call this Joy Division at home, because I did enjoy this album on its own merits, but it sounds a lot like Joy Division. Loved the darkly melodic bass lines and driving drums, as well as the moody vocal delivery. Call me a fan of gothic rock!
Listened on the drive to the mall and while walking around the mall. What an incredible story teller. Great range and variety of sounds on this record too. Down To You is a masterpiece of a song. Great record!
Listened on the drive home from the mall. Not for me. Didn't get the spooky vibes other talk about. Don't like long jammy improv sections that just go on and on. I just don't really enjoy this era of psychedelic music. At least it was short.
Listened in the car to and from my parents. Finally after a bunch of boring, safe, or otherwise just pleasant music I get something that gets me blood flowing! From front to back it's just dripping in violent, angry, post-Thatcher British energy and I couldn't get enough. Still feels like listening to the future and I'm dancing in the club on Omega in Mass Effect 2. Almost 30 years later and maybe we need to start praising the Firestarters again. A classic.
Listened in the car driving to the University. I really wanted to like this record. I usually like bands that implement noise and unconventional sounds but this one just didn't do it for me. I liked the rhythms and drums but I wish there was more harmonic material for me to sink my teeth into. Disappointing.
Listened in the car while running errands. A heartbreakingly beautiful record. Didn't realize the timing of his death until about halfway through and it completely recontextualized the record for me. It was on the short side which left me wanting more.
Listened while in and driving home from Costco. Went into this really wanting to hate it because Morrissey is a bigoted prick but found myself really enjoying it. It's got that 80s British rock stank on it that I love. Still loses a star because Morrissey is a bigoted prick.
Listened while driving to work. Nine out of ten doctors agree: do NOT listen to this album while operating heavy machinery. Two stars because it wasn't actively painful to listen to, and I'm sure it goes hard in the sleep study waiting room.
Listened while driving home from work. Perhaps the horniest album ever made. Sounds great!
Listened while driving my wife to work. Was pleasantly surprised by this one! Beautiful vocal harmonies and incredible musicianship on their instruments. It's like I was sent back in time! I wish there were more of the oscillating times signatures in the opener and thought the departure from their style in Sally Go Round The Roses was a miss for me. Loved it!
Listened while driving to and from my parents' place. Always nice to get reminders that there's a whole world out there and that Western music isn't the be all and end all. Really interesting album to listen to and just beautiful all around.
Listened while driving to and from work. Transported me from my current -20 degree Winnipeg day to a Cuban dance hall on the beach in the summer. Unfortunately for me the only things I hate more than dancing are beaches and summer heat. An excellently made record that is just not for me.
Listened while driving to Costco. Great bass grooves, excellent solos. Just a good old nice jazz record, can't say much more than that.
Listened while doing work on the computer. Didn't know Rod Stewart was in a competent but fairly boring band before he was a solo star. A competent but fairly boring and forgettable album.
Listened while driving to and from my daughter's soccer class. I mean what else is there to say, it's Stevie Wonder of course it's going to be great. It doesn't have many of his all time classics but it's consistently good all the way through.
Listened driving to and from work. Reggae isn't really my thing but I really enjoyed this one. Thought it was all going to sound the same but there was a lot of variety in the tracklist. Surprised by this one!
Listened driving to and from rehearsal. Not sure how I missed this one when I was in my indie rock obsession in university back in 09. Absolutely loved this one! Bangers from front to back.
Listened on the way to work. Went into this one expecting a snooze fest and was blown away with how good it was. It has intimate acoustic songs and sprawling epics. Incredible song writing and musicianship. Legit shocked how good this one was!
Listened while driving home from work. Thought these would be more sparse soundscapes than they actually were. These were actually quite compelling and often very exciting. I don't think I liked it enough to rate it a 5 star classic but was pleasantly surprised.
Listened driving to work. Very smooth, very funky! It was a little bit too cheesy for me though. Great album!
Listened while at home. I mean it's a classic. However I've always felt that it takes itself way too seriously with its heavy handed social commentary and interview clips woven throughout. The good far outweighs the bad and it's of course a five star classic.
Listened while driving to and from toddler soccer practice. Really fun album, full of that 80s stank that I love. Sounds a little too much like the Smiths for me to consider it a classic on its own merits. Liked it a lot!
Listened in the car and at the grocery store. This app is turning me into a Neil Young fan. This one is more traditional rock than Harvest and it features some great solos and some incredible musicianship. Really enjoyed this one!
Listened in the car and while walking in the mall. Imagine The Beatles making a rock opera record. Now imagine it much worse, with much less talented musicians, cringe lyrics, with the worst production you've ever heard (even for the time), and worst of all, it's boring. I don't know what it was with British rock bands at the time but for some reason they thought they were at the pinnacle of musical expression enough to start claiming they've made rock "operas" when they've just boring, forgettable slop. Terrible.
Listened while at work. Had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. It was like if you had the producer for Owner of a Lonely Heart do a Rammstein album. Enjoyed my time with it.
Listened while driving to work. This is a beautiful record but I really dislike the genre. Her Beatles cover was stunning but the rest I could take it or leave it.
Listened to and from work. Man I really dislike this era of rock. There were a couple good songs but the rest was just unpleasant to listen to. Cringe lyrics, boring rhythm section, about 20 minutes too long. Evil Chair is up there among the worst songs I've listened to in the project so far.
Listened while at home. One of the greatest albums ever made and it's a crime that it's not in the top 50 albums on this app. There's nothing I can say about it that hasn't already been said other than I love this album and it was a pleasure to hear it again.
Listened while cleaning up the house. A really pleasant little indie rock album from the early 90s that isn't grunge. It didn't blow me away and I'll probably have forgotten about it by the end of this project but liked it nonetheless.
Listened while doing work on my computer. Holds the record for "oh this is where that's from!" moments. Good stuff, extremely influential but I don't know if I'd call it groundbreaking. Enjoyed it but wasn't blown away.
Listened going to and from work. Missy Elliott reminding the world she's one of the GOATs. Lots of great tracks but a couple misses and didn't love the monologue at the beginning. Wish that was in the liner notes instead. Enjoyed it a lot!
Listened to and from work. Didn't watch the visual version. I am certainly not the target audience for this album but I can certainly acknowledge the importance and the weight of it. I enjoyed it a lot, especially Beyonce's vocal range and mastery of a variety of styles throughout. I'm so torn between 4 and 5 stars but I think on this occasion I'm going to round down.
Listened to and from work. I love the Beatles but I don't love their earlier work. There's glimmers of their brilliance there but it's just too poppy and sacarine for me. Plus the mixing and production of these stereo remasters is just awful. Looking forward to hearing Rubber Soul and Revolver again on this list.
Listened to and from work. Fun little album. Like a lot of disco to me it kind of all blended together.
