TBH i think i would give the whole album 2.5/5! Not bad just not my thing that much haha.
I didn't score this one individually, because it felt more like a complete piece from being live.
Favourite song(s): Folsom Prison Blues, San Quentin (Reprise)
Least favourite song(s): I Walk the Line (though still love it, but loved all the others more!)
I loved that you really feel transported in this album. Mr Cash you are a legend :)
Sooo much fun. Billy Joel's songwriting is always a blast to experience. I loved some of the songs (the stranger, always a woman) but the last two left much to be desired imo. a solid 3.5 album; some songs to save but not consistent enough for a 4 :)
favourite(s): The Stranger, Always a Woman
least favourite(s): Get it Right the First Time, Everybody Has a Dream
i appreciate how impressive this album is and the experimentation, but for me it's more misses than hits. i do love time after time though!
it was fine! the instrumentals were lovely but some of it felt repetitive. 2 or 2.5/5, depending.
this album is so wild, oh my god. i love how crazy it is?! really haven't heard anything like it, especially from this era. solid 3.5/5 i think.
this was my first time listening to this album all the way through; i appreciate it's value and the huge impact on the music scene as a whole, but it left little to no impact on me.
i appreciated the lyrics the most, but i do feel the album is a touch overrated. i can't give it more than a 2, because the majority of songs i just did not enjoy at all. also fuck that racist cunt nico.
ft: heroin
lft: i'll be your mirror, european son
my god this sucks. guess being a nazi will do that to you.
p.s. why does chelsea girls go on for 10 years. it's like a circle of hell.
ft: these days
lft: eulogy to lenny brucem chelsea girls, it was a pleasure then
such an easy 5*!! a no-skip album for me, i absolutely adored it. the way the vocals are layered throughout to build such a fantastical soundscape is incredible. the grandiosity that builds is exciting every time, and make the softer, more dreamlike tracks shine.
it's hard to pick just one as a favourite. the first three tracks provide this sense of invigoration, and feel almost feverish at times. the instrumentation pulses in a way that is borderline hypnotic. then there's tracks such as under ice, waking the witch, and jig of life that provide a more storied approach lyrically, with each track developing into separate chapters of a book. under ice feels ominous, almost haunting before transitioning into waking the witch, a more claustrophobic atmosphere, waking the witch specifically felt like i had been put into a musical sleep paralysis, in the best way. then there's jig of life, turbulent, emotional, and so fun.
again, easy 5/5 for me. i completely understand that it's not for everyone but this is such a unique album and should be considered as influential as something like the velvet underground, in my opinion!

incredibly produced! some real bangers on here. i had never listened to this album before, and i can understand why it was on the list. it's a real shame that he made an album with some real lyrical gems only to turn around and become a nazi. boo you!
