Album Summary

Technique is the fifth studio album by English electronic rock band New Order. Released on 30 January 1989 by Factory Records, the album was partly recorded on the island of Ibiza, and incorporates Balearic beat and acid house influences into the group's dance-rock sound. The album was influenced by the then growing acid scene, and Sumner's experiences at Shoom in London. It was also New Order's final studio album to be released under Factory Records (though not their final Factory release, that being the following year's "World in Motion"); the label would declare bankruptcy in 1992 following a severe financial downturn caused primarily by the significant commercial failure of Happy Mondays' Yes Please!. Technique was the first New Order album to reach number one on the UK charts, and "Fine Time", the first single from the album, reached number 11. Remixed versions of "Round & Round" and "Run" were also released as singles.

My attention was caught by "Love Less." The whole album is very dance-y.

Definitely not my sound.

Well this kind of passed me by without me having to think about it too much and it was pleasant. Maybe it would be 5 stars if I had paid closer attention? Maybe it would be 3? We'll never know. I did pay close enough attention - in fact it was the only thing that got my attention - to note that they nicked the melody to Leaving on a Jet Plane in Run.

I could listen to this all day.

I know the truncated story and iconography of Joy Division makes them eternally cool, but I will choose New Order over them every day of the week. Their hits are some of the best songs of their respective eras. The closest you get to one of those here is probably "Round and Round," but I like other songs on this album better: "Vanishing Point," "Run," and the opening trio of "Fine Time," "All the Way," and "Love Less." New Order rules, this album is great, the end.

Sounds like classic New Order. I liked it.

Dream Attack bangs

Pretty good, not great. Didn’t have that big banger of a song I was expecting but still a decent listen. 3/5

Guilty partner, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack are bangers. Great dance album with some amazing riffs

I can hear there influences in so much I enjoy.

Not bad, not great

literally loved

Very decent stuff indeed. I'm just not that big fan of a new wave sound, but I do like it a lot, so probably 3 stars for me

Great album. Top bops: Love less Round & round Vanishing point

Fine time - 2 All the way - 3 Love less - 3 Round & round - 2 Guilty partner - 2 Run - 3 Mr disco - 2 Vanishing point - 2 Dream attack - 3

I've found through this process that I like New Order, but not enough to really see myself returning to them

Rätt trist 80-talsmusik. Inte min kopp te. Inte fruktansvärt så inte sämre än 3.

"All The Way" reminds me a little of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. The album is fun, dance pop. None of the songs are as good as Bizarre Love Triangle.

I’m not even that knowledgeable about New Order’s discography, but I have to presume they have better than this.

Like Low Life, I'm largely into the big single I already knew (Round & Round.) Only 'Dream Attack' rose to the level of getting added to the playlist while - again, like Low Life - his vocals were weak enough that I couldn't 100% enjoy a handful of the songs.

*1989 *This sounds like every New Order album, despite being later than the decade. *I very much like 80s alt and new wave, but a little New Order can go a long way. This was only 39 minutes, so a perfect length. *Some songs are decent, but there's a lot more synth and 80s electronica than anyone needs. RATING - 6.5/10

Only half listened

3 stars. Good but not as good as Substance

Man this made the cut over Power Corruption and Lies?? What are we doing?? I love New Order but this album is them finding the other side of the hill and beginning to tumble down. It takes till "Round & Round" to hear something I recognize as truly the New Order sound, and even then it feels like a poorly-aged attempt to iterate on their signature sound by slapping a late-80's coat of paint on it. "Run" was ok, but the song you are looking for is "Your Silent Face" off of PC&L. Sad to give this a 2/5 for it being such a blatant miss

TUNES. Only thing is I prefer the version of Round & Round that is on the best of because this one lacks the intensity that makes that version so good. Otherwise love this album.

This is New Order far away from Joy Division. Interesting New Order pick as I would’ve gone with PCL.

Decent 80s synth pop.

This album has some nice melodies and sounds, but... this is very kitsch at many moments, and not in a particularly good way. It surely sounds dated, but at least it is enjoyable. And, in that sense, I do not care much about it sonically. But, it surely is sometimes annoying. And still kind of good. I would never imagine myself listening to something like that, but here I am, and I am afraid I slightly liked this. Not much, and I am horrified too, but I guess it has been nice at some extent. It has some good songs, that's for certain.

New Order at their grooviest and most dance'able. Strong house vibes underneath many of these tunes. However, it still has that intoxicating atmosphere that made me fall in love with the band, the synths sound lush and bright and the songwriting is excellent. One change this time around is that the production sounds a lot less cold, more sensual. Round & Round is one of the band's best songs. The highs are maybe not as high as on PC&L, but the album is a dancefloor essential.

It was okay. Nothing to write home about.

"We drank, did drugs, and fucked in Ibiza. All we've got to show for it is a serviceable Acid House album."

So this is what Joy division did after Ian Curtis died? It sounds a lot more mellow but still dark. Kinda reminded me of another album on this list: quiet life by Japan. To the point I thought the singers were the same but that's not right. Similar music, similar score.

New Order is a band that deserves a deep dive from me. When I do listen to them I enjoy them more than Joy Division (though I don’t think the point of Joy Division was to “enjoy” them), and I think they’re easy to dismiss as their former band’s “leftovers”, which isn’t fair. New Order has certainly influenced some of my favorite bands like The National. Technique is a very solid record. I need to give it more listens but it’s a safe 4-star very good album.

Low-Life, an earlier New Order album that also made this list, was fine. Technique is fine too. Fairly dated – it sounds exactly like what I'd imagine an intersection of 80s and 90s to consist in – but fun nonetheless. A complete 80s-esque mess on the album cover, but I kind of love it. Certainly distinctive with its pink-purple gradient and cosmic-coloured kid statue. The textural complexity of Fine Time is unmatched in its confidence and coolness. The board fade is horrific, but the rest of the track ticks just about every box. All The Way is pretty strong too; the singing, though exceptionally new wavey, gets the point across. And that bassline... excellent. I can ignore (or at least try to ignore) the goofy ultra-artificial percussion and the 80s production that does nothing but distract. Love Less does a little better, incorporating a nice invigorating acoustic guitar line and slightly more interesting singing. The percussion could still use some work. We hear a solid example of a circle of fifths chord progression in Round And Round, a song which fares startlingly better (at everything) than the Pink Floyd track of essentially the same name. Cool synths, and again bad drumming and singing. Ah, well. Gen Xers didn't know any better. Guilty Partner is a coin flip as to whether it's genuinely good. I'll err on the side of "bad" if only because the melody is so aggressively unmemorable that I couldn't remember a single sausage of it after the fact. But Run is violently better, almost worth of my Loved Songs playlist. It has an extended instrumental at the end! That alone qualifies it for the big leagues. Mr. Disco is as hilariously cheesy as its name suggests. Those high "ding" synths make me feel like I'm onstage at some retro kid's musical. I enjoy Vanishing Point for the most part, but once again the singing is kind of lazy, almost slurred. The keyboard synths are the highlight, not necessarily for being good but certainly for being distinctive. Dream Attack, the final track, yanks your attention toward its chord progression. Pretty cool. 3/5 Key tracks: Fine Time, Run

I'm probably the only one who likes New Order more than Joy Division. Saw Peter Hook perform recently, he played for over 2 hours and all the old NO/JD songs still sound fresh.

This feels like one of the best deep cuts New Order albums ever. Their most "The Cure" coded. Regret not seeing these guys when I had the chance.

What the hell did I just listen to? It's like it jumps from The Cure to Pet Shop Boys. Truly awful stuff. 1.5/5. Raising to 2.

Too electric for me

Hate the 80s noise

There’s nothing I can hear that separates this from generic 80s crap

to me this album is disco central. one might even say... disco... elysium...?

𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 feels further from my idea of New Order than I expected. The bright synths and club rhythms make the strongest impression, while the familiar basslines and bittersweet melodies occasionally bring me back to the band I recognise. Dance music isn’t unfamiliar territory for them, but the balance here takes some getting used to. There are good hooks, and the guitars provide a welcome contrast to the electronics. Still, I enjoy the album in stretches rather than getting carried along by it. I don’t need New Order to make the same record every time, but this particular version of them leaves me with a fairly restrained “not bad.”

Cited as their masterpiece at their peak, but not for me. The fusion of dance with rock and some acid house is not to be scoffed at, nor should you dislike this album. I just think the classics; "Power Corruption and lies" and "Low-Life" are superior. Not to forget "Substance" of course with those phenomenal and most iconic tracks "Blue Monday" and "True Faith". Give me a Best Of or Greatest Hits and I'd be much happier.

Look, it’s fun. Is it amazing? No. It’s fun. Shut up! Four.

New order are a singles band, and this album reinforces that for me. 2 or 3 standout tunes surround by fillers. 3.5/5.

New Order is a British group, and this is an album of electronic rock and dance music. They have a sound similar to Depeche Mode. The songs are fine, but nothing superlative.

Nice, nice, nice, nice. A gift for me on a busy week. Move over, Phil Spector. I wish I had more time to devote to this one, actually, because I have never heard this album before, even though I like New Order. It seems good and I enjoyed it. I will give it a 4 for now but maybe if I ever go back through these (lol) I could upgrade it. Highlight: 'All the Way'

Nice and nostalgic. Great, not so much, but enjoyable. 4/5

lowkey loved this

Segunda audição me soou mais interessante, com alguma riqueza melódica e partes de guitarras bastante agradáveis.

Not really my kind of music but not a bad listen

Perhaps it was simply because I wasn't feeling the new wave, but this album didn't hit for me. I've always been a bigger fan of Joy Division.

Not my favorite New Order album, but still full of sparkling brilliance.

This is getting caught in the crossfire, today was the wrong day to listen to garbage 80's slop.

I've listened to Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies (PCL,) but I never felt those were compelling - especially the latter - enough to keep going through New Order's discography. The list yet has forced my hand many times and this time is no exception. (spoiler: This one was more compelling.) This has New Order at a more developed point in their synth-pop leaning direction that they started earlier in the decade. Some of the songs are like Smiths-like jangle pop and others sound like the danceable Madchester scene music. I think New Orders melodies on this album are so lovely, they really aced it on here. In particular the vocal melodies are what stands out to me the most (probably because the vocals were god-awful on PCL, like truly bottom-of-the-barrel stuff.) I think if I were to return to any of New Order's albums this would probably be the one I'd be the most inclined to return to. Highlight Song/s: "All The Way" and "Dream Attack"

Starting off with the most late 80s/early 90s sounds i have ever heard lol. The sound quality is a little eh but the actual motifs are good. gets a little more poppy almost the cure like it kinda keeps getting better as the album goes but we will see if it can continue that trend. 3.75

This is just mainstream radio background pop.

Love them and Dream Attack is one of their best, but this album is just not as good as their others :(

This was really so boring and pretty bad really. It's still a good band, so it's not terrible but it will really bore the pants off you. No reason to listen to this album.

Very good album. There’s some drum and bass influence here I think. Enjoyed every track, big fan of the band. 4.5 for me.

Mostly out of my comfort zone; I would have probably appreciated it more if I were more cultured on music making.

I just didnt get it.

Electrónico, medio aburrido, y solo conozco Bizarre love triangle y no está en este disco

ok joy division -> Ian Curtis -> new order. und jetzt ? halt nice new model army. aber trotzdem pop. acid pop? nö. super cover. c

Lowkey want to give this one. I gave the last New Order album a one. It’s tolerable, I just don’t really like them at all.

Really good. Saved this one.

klinkt heel modern, echt ziek dat het zo oud is.

Sort of sounds like a b sounds album - nice enough

Synth-Pop!! New Order was definitely in the tape player in my sister’s room and car growing up. The hard part I have ‘80s synth pop is it all came out at the same time and blends in my mind. Even here, some it sounds the same: Guilty Part sounds very Cure; Run Sounds very Morrissey; Round & Round sounds very Depeche Mode. There are sections that sound OMD and Erasure. I think the biggest differences are here Bernard Summer’s vocals aren’t as robust as some of the other artists; and there is more instrumentation which is appreciated. It would be interesting to see who influenced who first. There are plenty of good songs here but my key track was Mr. Disco because it had the best bass work and sounded the most original. I could just in this Time Machine again anytime.

Random thoughts: * Another New Order album that is solid all the way through. * New Order is definitely a must listen band so their inclusion on 1001 is necessary. * This applies to New Order but also other bands/artists as well. I think that the New Order "Substance" compilation should be the 1001 entry and forgo the two proper albums on here. Sometimes the "best of" gets at the heart of what made the band great. I know this opinion may be blasphemous. But I'd also argue that Steve Miller Band 74-78 should be on 1001 but I wouldn't put any of his solo albums on a 1001 list. * Anyway, New Order is great and this album is solid all the way through but also go check out Substance to get some of New Order's best. * BTW - the 1001 New Order albums don't contain Blue Monday or Bizarre Love Triangle. Just sayin'.

Wow I was deceived by the first song. I thought this was gonna be an electric/house/dance album and I really wasn’t in the moods for that tbh, but this was good af!

This the type of music that an ex and a former college roommate loved and would go out to dance to. I was fine with it but wasn’t a fan. However, I did enjoy this album and the music is indeed danceable.

It’s not the most groundbreaking or experimental example of synthpop - nor is it New Order’s best work - but regardless, I enjoyed it. Favorites: Dream Attack, Mr. Disco, Vanishing Point

This would be okay in a John Hughs movie but a whole album of it is pretty excessive.

Superb album.

new order are one of my favourite bands but this album being here is a bit of a surprise for me. i like the acid house inspiration a lot but i wish they'd done a bit more with it. although actually my favourite song on the album is the closer, dream attack, possibly the most "typical new order" song on the album. still some great synths, an album i would love to hear on a drunken night out

UGH, few songs I love on here but as with most New Order albums I know (Substance not included) it's just like half completely uninteresting to me. WHY!!!! GET THERE!!!

Not what I expected it to be. They made better music than this

A couple ok songs

Not for me. Skimmed my way through most of this.

An interesting clash of early-EDM and late 80’s rock. In both cases the songs aren’t great but the tracks including vocals were far better. The album had vibes of The Cure but were not as composed as that group is. Overall a subpar listen.

There’s nothing ‘new’ about this wave of the same old 80s synth pop. This would be totally forgettable if not for those uncomfortable mechanical tones being incessantly driven into your ears at unreasonable bpms.

I hate 80s dance pop less than I hate today's electronic music.

Alternative Dance/Synthpop/Indie Rock Favorite Song: Mr. Disco Least Favorite Song: Fine Time I’m…not sure if I actually really like this album as much as other people, not gonna lie. It has a 3.73 rating on Rate Your Music, but to be honest, I felt like they’ve played it safe with this record. All of the tracks are consistent with quality, but there’s really not a lot of innovative tracks that I would really want to sink my teeth into. There’s only one track that I’ll have in my personal music library, but otherwise, I’m just…kinda bored. 6/10

3 out of 5. Some good but standard 80's pop here. Still better than what I've got over the past few days.

80's slop in the 90's. Idk how to feel about NO. Between rock, alt, and electronica I think they're spread too thin and don't make a whole lot that stands out in any of the three. Fairly forgettable but there are other NO albums on here. Favorite(s): Guilty Partner Least: Run (there's like 6 brit-alt songs that have the exact same melody, I don't care who came first) 2/5
