Ghosteen
Nick Cave & The Bad SeedsQuite tired of ambient bad seeds. Miss the filth. Worst album cover of their career. That aside, still quite great, feel the heartache. P.S. Good lord this list needs some diversity. @me

Unfortunately this is a modern classic.
Scooby Snacks was a jam when I was a child. That's it though, this is childish music. Put it in the children's edition.
Dudes who wear trilbies have tricked themselves into thinking that Elvis Costello is essential and ground-breaking because he also likes a fancy hat. Post-punk for people who are afraid of loud noises.
All timer, for the robe alone
Probably very influential. Influential doesn't always mean interesting.
Be sure n tell her, SATAN
Pretty standard indie rock. Probably could have died without hearing this.
Definitely free jazz
Could go harder
Goth boiz
Love the Bob. King of the soft boys. Husker Du for when you're in your late 30's.
Tom Petty already exists
Eight miles high. Gummon. The rest, quite pants. Crozz
Probably the 5th best Joni album.
Snoop be snoopin
Not my favourite but Bob be Bob
All timer, easy
I like American Water slightly more but still some outstanding songwriting here. Love the Berman, RIP
Heard a million times. 5 Zimmermans
Sounds like a white guy wearing a silly hat.
Supposed all timer. Extremely good but perhaps a bit of its time.
Boomer Rock. Don't care.
God I love Brian Eno
Still had it in him. Chur my Len.
Too much boomer rock. Who gives a shit.
Under-rate Bowie. Mad cool
Ian McCulloch's greatest songwriter of all time is Ian McCullouch. Songs to Learn and sing is such an engrossing greatest hits that I never gelled that much with the albums.
Quite tired of ambient bad seeds. Miss the filth. Worst album cover of their career. That aside, still quite great, feel the heartache. P.S. Good lord this list needs some diversity. @me
No fist city, no the pill. Minus two stars.
Swede as
Do not need
Love the cure but this one is a bit forgettable other than A Forest and the title track. This list needs some kind of one album per artist limit.
Teenage kicks
Kangol hat wearing ass
Ehhh
3 EPs better also be on this list. This one is aight. Delightfully weird boys.
The whitest boy alive
Favourite Willie. Outlaw Dawg
Blorbital
White people: - think this is jazz - always making this face Listen to Louis Armstrong instead.
Too much to dream is a nugget. Otherwise pretty so-so psychedelic stuff. I think these guys went christian later.
I mean, it's revolver. 2nd favourite beatles.
Fist two tracks are bangers. Knives Out still sounds like an FM radio mainstay. The rest, honestly a bit corny in 2024. You and whose army hilarious for being the wussiest 'step up' song of all time.
Ahhh, tequila Neil. It's a sad one. 2nd favourite of the ditch trilogy. Never completely clicked with me the way On the Beach and (almost ditch trilogy album) Zuma did. Guess I prefer weed and cocaine Neils. Still 10 off 10, I love most Neils.
Do not make a sound
Superfuzz Bigmuff is better but this is probably 2nd best
Corny, overproduced shite for angry teens. This list so white.
The End rules, Manzarek rules. Everything else was good in its time I guess. The older I get the more I agree with Danny Fields, Morrison was a twat.
This list does not need a Văn Morrison live album. Astral Weeks, that's your lot, boomers.
Really enjoyed listening to this one. Solid, some jammers. Tim Burgess made some good solo stuff. Essential? Probably not.
Hell yeah! Except that exclamation mark song. Shit's annoying.
Amazing that we started here and ended with We Built this City on Sausage Rolls. Should this be on this list? Yes Do I give a shit? No
Impossible to overstate how influential Kraftwerk were. Not my favourite but every album rules except Techno Pop. Teens hate this, robot music is man music. If you one starred this AND Black Sabbath's Vol. 4; banned from listening to music.
This has to be a joke. Probably better off going your whole life without hearing this. Cheers Len. Watch Pat Finnerty's Kravitzbowl on YouTube instead of wasting your time here.
Should it be on this list? Yes Do I give a care? No
Great album. Had a hard life, our Marianne. My favourite thing about this album is that the NZ release is missing the best song 'Why'd ya do it' due to that pesky C-word. Still very prudish over here right through the 70's.
Nonsense
No.
Absolutely not.
Important band, good album. This list probably has 100 Morrissey albums on it though. Queen is Dead and we're good; chuck some more hip-hop / women / non-western artists in the next rewrite?
Two echo & the bunnymen albums?! Already. Expecting more. You're good with the greatest hits. I listened to that instead. This project has quickly become more about reviewing the list itself than listening to the albums. The cover reminded me of the KLF's Bill Drummond's sort-of autobiography '45'. That's a great read, he was managing these guys in his own way. Looks like Iceland where he toured with them so he potentially took this photo. Seemed to have a delightful love-hate relationship with Ian & the bunny boys.
Really enjoyed this. Didn't like Cocteau Twins when I was younger. Still a bit grating to listen to as whole, more enjoyable dipping in and out. Personally, I like Heaven & Las Vegas more.
Turns out this guy was in Magazine. Also did original work for the Lost Highway soundtrack. What a dude. Not sure this is worthy of a place on this list when actual movie soundtracks exist. Glad it is though as I got to learn a bit about old mate Barry.
Ehhhh
Very talented songwriter, great musically. I simply don't know why I could never connect with Nick Drake. I guess maybe I like a bit more edge/weirdness/looseness when it comes to folk music. Love Bert Jansch for example. Anyway, absolutely should be on this list, deserves all its plaudits. 5 stars.
Very cool. Sly is the man. Everyday People unfortunately has been ruined for me by interminable Toyota ads (here in NZ) in my youth.
Incredible and not even my favourite Curtis.
Incredibly uncool but you cannot deny the staying power of Mr Brightside.
Haven't listened to this in years. Still flippin' sick. Top jammer: Mote. Time to check if this is still my ~3rd favourite Sonic Youth.
That Lady is an absolute belter. The rest is OK.
Definition of OK. At Swim Two Birds / Montgolfier Brothers do this same thing with way more Chutzpah
I get why people love this. I briefly did. Grew up and can't stand this twee nonsense anymore. Can't deny the man's talent as wussy as his output is. I remember someone describing this as macaroni art, the album. STFU Stevens, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and the ilk all so highly rated by my contemporaries when I was in my indie 20s. Never really got it. This has no relation to Animal Collective and its still got me thinking about how much I dislike them. Tweeness was a stain on music in the 00's.
Listen to Snapper (NZ) instead. This is nothing.
Goes so hard. One of the great debuts. Wipes the floor with the Blur/Oasis rivalry. Their follow up, Dog Man Star is also a belter.
Blur aren't normally an album band for me. Enjoyed this listen though. Song 2 is a skip just due to its deserved ubiquity.
Sounds exactly like the kind of the music a guy with a skull cane would make.
Might be the horniest guy of all time
Of course it's British. Most 00's album cover award.
Mostly delicious, some duds Hate common the actor, like the guy, rate the rapper.
Unfortunately this is a modern classic.
https://youtu.be/I79YNDYrUno
Malcolm might be the lamest person of all time and l will never understand why people don't hate on the sex pistols for that very reason.
Doesn't have Brothers in Arms or Romeo & Juliet. 2 Knopflers.
Pretty dumb. Listening to Yazoo instead.
Scooby Snacks was a jam when I was a child. That's it though, this is childish music. Put it in the children's edition.
No notes
Listen to 'No Other' to hear Gene at his best.
Lambchop have better albums but still decent. Just knew the general 1001 nerd would rate this lowly.
Each member cooler than the last.
Dull indie rock for coffee shops
Top 5 psychedelic albums of the 60s. Extremely influential but manages to remain untarnished by all of its proteges.
Only up from here for Lanegan
I don't particularly love their music but good lord these were a couple of the coolest dudes. Here I am, again, recommending Bill Drummond's autobiography '45'. Thanks to the Ad-executive wank who recommended it to me in a pub many years ago.
Instrumentally, goes hard. Don't particularly love the man's voice, sounds slightly sped up or something?? Slight Kiedis vibes.
Nah
HELL YEAH
Not for me, I'll trust the guys that like this kind of music and accept that its good though.
Anyone who gave this one star is scared of jazz and is banned from New Orleans.
Took me a while to warm to this as my flatmate played it until I hated it. I have come to realise this is their greatest work. Saw Thom solo just 2 nights ago, what an absolute treat that was. Man has moves.
One of the greats apparently, I've never been that on board with public enemy personally. Kind of like the Stevie Wonder of rap. I get that it was important but do not enjoy listening.
Of all Liars albums, why this one? At their most 00's pretentious here. Liars flippin rule though. Guy who wrote this book gets one cool point back. Bound to lose it again very soon via some mediocre British wank.
Dudes who wear trilbies have tricked themselves into thinking that Elvis Costello is essential and ground-breaking because he also likes a fancy hat. Post-punk for people who are afraid of loud noises.
Gotta agree that the title track is so good, the rest doesn't hit as hard as it could. Big up the Reverend.
Two undertones records?! This is the only one that should be on the list.
First song 24 mins of no thanks. Acid was wasted on the boomers.
You're so James
SITTING ON A PARKBENCH
No
No thanks
Needs more bongo
Imagine not liking Iggy
Let me roll it
As with the previous Drake: I get it, don't love it.
First album I've actually listened to in a while (too familiar with everything since). Gruff Rhys rules. John Cale featuring is an instant 20 cool points. Just on the arsty enough side of indie rock for me. 10 cymrus
Hell yeah, best debut ever recorded in a kitchen if my memory serves me right. Would always way rather listen to Bert than Nick Drake. Songwriting and his voice simply has a bit more of the old verisimilitude or some such. Nothing like spending a grey day listening to Bert & Loudoun Wainwright III to get the heart pumping.
Jimbo can blow
Neil is one of my favourite dudes but this one is far from essential. Who's going to make a version of of this list with any creativity at all?
The family guy episode that references this is more essential.
