Popular Reviews

Gris Gris by Dr. John

Anyone who gave this one star is scared of jazz and is banned from New Orleans.

Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin' Criminals

Scooby Snacks was a jam when I was a child. That's it though, this is childish music. Put it in the children's edition.

If you don't like this, it's time to grow up. I should know, I was too once young and wrong.

Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star

Awww hell yeah. Gonna guess a sub 3 general rating. Wrong again nerds. Especially the top review guy; bet that guy likes the eagles.

1-Star Albums (48)

All Ratings (826)

Elephant by The White Stripes
Apr 01 2024
Triangle by The Beau Brummels
Apr 11 2024

Probably very influential. Influential doesn't always mean interesting.

Dirt by Alice In Chains
Apr 14 2024
Lost Souls by Doves
Apr 15 2024

Pretty standard indie rock. Probably could have died without hearing this.

Tapestry by Carole King
Apr 20 2024

Could go harder

Mask by Bauhaus
Apr 21 2024

Goth boiz

Copper Blue by Sugar
Apr 22 2024

Love the Bob. King of the soft boys. Husker Du for when you're in your late 30's.

Fifth Dimension by The Byrds
Apr 24 2024

Eight miles high. Gummon. The rest, quite pants. Crozz

Hejira by Joni Mitchell
Apr 25 2024

Probably the 5th best Joni album.

Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
Apr 27 2024

Snoop be snoopin

GI by Germs
Apr 28 2024
Bright Flight by Silver Jews
May 03 2024

I like American Water slightly more but still some outstanding songwriting here. Love the Berman, RIP

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder
May 09 2024

Supposed all timer. Extremely good but perhaps a bit of its time.

Made In Japan by Deep Purple
May 17 2024

Too much boomer rock. Who gives a shit.

Crocodiles by Echo And The Bunnymen
May 20 2024

Ian McCulloch's greatest songwriter of all time is Ian McCullouch. Songs to Learn and sing is such an engrossing greatest hits that I never gelled that much with the albums.

Ghosteen by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
May 22 2024

Quite tired of ambient bad seeds. Miss the filth. Worst album cover of their career. That aside, still quite great, feel the heartache. P.S. Good lord this list needs some diversity. @me

Fever Ray by Fever Ray
May 24 2024

Swede as

Seventeen Seconds by The Cure
May 28 2024

Love the cure but this one is a bit forgettable other than A Forest and the title track. This list needs some kind of one album per artist limit.

Hypnotised by The Undertones
May 29 2024

Teenage kicks

Fuzzy by Grant Lee Buffalo
Jun 02 2024

Ehhh

Hot Shots II by The Beta Band
Jun 03 2024

3 EPs better also be on this list. This one is aight. Delightfully weird boys.

The Wildest! by Louis Prima
Jun 08 2024

White people: - think this is jazz - always making this face Listen to Louis Armstrong instead.

Electric Prunes by The Electric Prunes
Jun 09 2024

Too much to dream is a nugget. Otherwise pretty so-so psychedelic stuff. I think these guys went christian later.

Revolver by Beatles
Jun 10 2024

I mean, it's revolver. 2nd favourite beatles.

Amnesiac by Radiohead
Jun 11 2024

Fist two tracks are bangers. Knives Out still sounds like an FM radio mainstay. The rest, honestly a bit corny in 2024. You and whose army hilarious for being the wussiest 'step up' song of all time.

Tonight's The Night by Neil Young
Jun 12 2024

Ahhh, tequila Neil. It's a sad one. 2nd favourite of the ditch trilogy. Never completely clicked with me the way On the Beach and (almost ditch trilogy album) Zuma did. Guess I prefer weed and cocaine Neils. Still 10 off 10, I love most Neils.

American Idiot by Green Day
Jun 15 2024

Corny, overproduced shite for angry teens. This list so white.

The Doors by The Doors
Jun 16 2024

The End rules, Manzarek rules. Everything else was good in its time I guess. The older I get the more I agree with Danny Fields, Morrison was a twat.

It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison
Jun 19 2024

This list does not need a Văn Morrison live album. Astral Weeks, that's your lot, boomers.

Tellin’ Stories by The Charlatans
Jun 20 2024

Really enjoyed listening to this one. Solid, some jammers. Tim Burgess made some good solo stuff. Essential? Probably not.

Phrenology by The Roots
Jun 21 2024

Hell yeah! Except that exclamation mark song. Shit's annoying.

Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane
Jun 22 2024

Amazing that we started here and ended with We Built this City on Sausage Rolls. Should this be on this list? Yes Do I give a shit? No

Autobahn by Kraftwerk
Jun 23 2024

Impossible to overstate how influential Kraftwerk were. Not my favourite but every album rules except Techno Pop. Teens hate this, robot music is man music. If you one starred this AND Black Sabbath's Vol. 4; banned from listening to music.

Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz
Jun 24 2024

This has to be a joke. Probably better off going your whole life without hearing this. Cheers Len. Watch Pat Finnerty's Kravitzbowl on YouTube instead of wasting your time here.

Tommy by The Who
Jun 25 2024
Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters
Jun 26 2024

Should it be on this list? Yes Do I give a care? No

Broken English by Marianne Faithfull
Jun 27 2024

Great album. Had a hard life, our Marianne. My favourite thing about this album is that the NZ release is missing the best song 'Why'd ya do it' due to that pesky C-word. Still very prudish over here right through the 70's.

Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Jun 28 2024

Nonsense

Jul 02 2024

Important band, good album. This list probably has 100 Morrissey albums on it though. Queen is Dead and we're good; chuck some more hip-hop / women / non-western artists in the next rewrite?

Porcupine by Echo And The Bunnymen
Jul 03 2024

Two echo & the bunnymen albums?! Already. Expecting more. You're good with the greatest hits. I listened to that instead. This project has quickly become more about reviewing the list itself than listening to the albums. The cover reminded me of the KLF's Bill Drummond's sort-of autobiography '45'. That's a great read, he was managing these guys in his own way. Looks like Iceland where he toured with them so he potentially took this photo. Seemed to have a delightful love-hate relationship with Ian & the bunny boys.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins
Jul 04 2024

Really enjoyed this. Didn't like Cocteau Twins when I was younger. Still a bit grating to listen to as whole, more enjoyable dipping in and out. Personally, I like Heaven & Las Vegas more.

Moss Side Story by Barry Adamson
Jul 05 2024

Turns out this guy was in Magazine. Also did original work for the Lost Highway soundtrack. What a dude. Not sure this is worthy of a place on this list when actual movie soundtracks exist. Glad it is though as I got to learn a bit about old mate Barry.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Jul 08 2024

Very talented songwriter, great musically. I simply don't know why I could never connect with Nick Drake. I guess maybe I like a bit more edge/weirdness/looseness when it comes to folk music. Love Bert Jansch for example. Anyway, absolutely should be on this list, deserves all its plaudits. 5 stars.

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Jul 09 2024

Very cool. Sly is the man. Everyday People unfortunately has been ruined for me by interminable Toyota ads (here in NZ) in my youth.

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Jul 10 2024

Incredible and not even my favourite Curtis.

Hot Fuss by The Killers
Jul 11 2024

Incredibly uncool but you cannot deny the staying power of Mr Brightside.

Goo by Sonic Youth
Jul 12 2024

Haven't listened to this in years. Still flippin' sick. Top jammer: Mote. Time to check if this is still my ~3rd favourite Sonic Youth.

3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers
Jul 14 2024

That Lady is an absolute belter. The rest is OK.

Coles Corner by Richard Hawley
Jul 15 2024

Definition of OK. At Swim Two Birds / Montgolfier Brothers do this same thing with way more Chutzpah

Illinois by Sufjan Stevens
Jul 16 2024

I get why people love this. I briefly did. Grew up and can't stand this twee nonsense anymore. Can't deny the man's talent as wussy as his output is. I remember someone describing this as macaroni art, the album. STFU Stevens, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and the ilk all so highly rated by my contemporaries when I was in my indie 20s. Never really got it. This has no relation to Animal Collective and its still got me thinking about how much I dislike them. Tweeness was a stain on music in the 00's.

Suede by Suede
Jul 18 2024

Goes so hard. One of the great debuts. Wipes the floor with the Blur/Oasis rivalry. Their follow up, Dog Man Star is also a belter.

Blur by Blur
Jul 19 2024

Blur aren't normally an album band for me. Enjoyed this listen though. Song 2 is a skip just due to its deserved ubiquity.

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Jul 20 2024

Sounds exactly like the kind of the music a guy with a skull cane would make.

25 by Adele
Jul 31 2024
Scott 2 by Scott Walker
Sep 20 2024

Might be the horniest guy of all time

Sunshine Hit Me by The Bees
Sep 22 2024

Of course it's British. Most 00's album cover award.

Be by Common
Sep 27 2024

Mostly delicious, some duds Hate common the actor, like the guy, rate the rapper.

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Sep 30 2024
Who's Next by The Who
Oct 03 2024

https://youtu.be/I79YNDYrUno

Duck Rock by Malcolm McLaren
Oct 06 2024

Malcolm might be the lamest person of all time and l will never understand why people don't hate on the sex pistols for that very reason.

Junkyard by The Birthday Party
Oct 07 2024
Dire Straits by Dire Straits
Oct 08 2024

Doesn't have Brothers in Arms or Romeo & Juliet. 2 Knopflers.

Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin' Criminals
Oct 11 2024

Scooby Snacks was a jam when I was a child. That's it though, this is childish music. Put it in the children's edition.

White Light by Gene Clark
Oct 13 2024

Listen to 'No Other' to hear Gene at his best.

Nixon by Lambchop
Oct 14 2024

Lambchop have better albums but still decent. Just knew the general 1001 nerd would rate this lowly.

The Band by The Band
Oct 15 2024

Each member cooler than the last.

Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Oct 19 2024

Dull indie rock for coffee shops

Tical by Method Man
Oct 21 2024
Odessey And Oracle by The Zombies
Oct 22 2024

Top 5 psychedelic albums of the 60s. Extremely influential but manages to remain untarnished by all of its proteges.

Dust by Screaming Trees
Oct 23 2024

Only up from here for Lanegan

The White Room by The KLF
Oct 25 2024

I don't particularly love their music but good lord these were a couple of the coolest dudes. Here I am, again, recommending Bill Drummond's autobiography '45'. Thanks to the Ad-executive wank who recommended it to me in a pub many years ago.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
Oct 26 2024

Instrumentally, goes hard. Don't particularly love the man's voice, sounds slightly sped up or something?? Slight Kiedis vibes.

Roots by Sepultura
Oct 30 2024

Not for me, I'll trust the guys that like this kind of music and accept that its good though.

Gris Gris by Dr. John
Oct 31 2024

Anyone who gave this one star is scared of jazz and is banned from New Orleans.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Nov 01 2024

Took me a while to warm to this as my flatmate played it until I hated it. I have come to realise this is their greatest work. Saw Thom solo just 2 nights ago, what an absolute treat that was. Man has moves.

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
Nov 02 2024

One of the greats apparently, I've never been that on board with public enemy personally. Kind of like the Stevie Wonder of rap. I get that it was important but do not enjoy listening.

Nov 03 2024

Of all Liars albums, why this one? At their most 00's pretentious here. Liars flippin rule though. Guy who wrote this book gets one cool point back. Bound to lose it again very soon via some mediocre British wank.

Brutal Youth by Elvis Costello
Nov 04 2024

Dudes who wear trilbies have tricked themselves into thinking that Elvis Costello is essential and ground-breaking because he also likes a fancy hat. Post-punk for people who are afraid of loud noises.

Let's Stay Together by Al Green
Nov 05 2024

Gotta agree that the title track is so good, the rest doesn't hit as hard as it could. Big up the Reverend.

The Undertones by The Undertones
Nov 06 2024

Two undertones records?! This is the only one that should be on the list.

Live / Dead by Grateful Dead
Nov 07 2024

First song 24 mins of no thanks. Acid was wasted on the boomers.

Aqualung by Jethro Tull
Nov 09 2024

SITTING ON A PARKBENCH

Bongo Rock by Incredible Bongo Band
Nov 13 2024

Needs more bongo

The Idiot by Iggy Pop
Nov 14 2024

Imagine not liking Iggy

Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake
Nov 16 2024

As with the previous Drake: I get it, don't love it.

Rings Around The World by Super Furry Animals
Nov 17 2024

First album I've actually listened to in a while (too familiar with everything since). Gruff Rhys rules. John Cale featuring is an instant 20 cool points. Just on the arsty enough side of indie rock for me. 10 cymrus

Bert Jansch by Bert Jansch
Nov 18 2024

Hell yeah, best debut ever recorded in a kitchen if my memory serves me right. Would always way rather listen to Bert than Nick Drake. Songwriting and his voice simply has a bit more of the old verisimilitude or some such. Nothing like spending a grey day listening to Bert & Loudoun Wainwright III to get the heart pumping.

L.A. Woman by The Doors
Nov 19 2024

Jimbo can blow

Ragged Glory by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Nov 20 2024

Neil is one of my favourite dudes but this one is far from essential. Who's going to make a version of of this list with any creativity at all?

Frampton Comes Alive by Peter Frampton
Nov 21 2024

The family guy episode that references this is more essential.

Moby Grape by Moby Grape
Nov 22 2024

Quite sick. Skip Spence's Oar better also be on here.

Aftermath by The Rolling Stones
Nov 23 2024

Manages to remain one of my favourite stones albums even in spite of all the misogyny.

Remedy by Basement Jaxx
Nov 24 2024
Pearl by Janis Joplin
Nov 26 2024

Joanie jorp jorp. Your cool mother-in-law's favourite lady. Wish I liked this more than I do. Me & Bobbie McGee is a tune. Trailblazing in her time etc etc.

Live! by Fela Kuti
Nov 28 2024

Ahh Fela, man. What a guy. Amazing that this collab happened at all. 100 fuck the Nigerian army's off 10. I usually get mad about artists being over-represented but there should be 10 Fela albums on this list. Watch the Finding Fela documentary. Listening on the wax, shame the Tony Allen drum solo isn't on there, goes hard as heck. Double tease when Fela introduces the drummers at the end.

Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Nov 29 2024

Not much care here. III for me. But yeah, should be on this here list.

Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Dec 01 2024
Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin
Dec 03 2024

Gimme III. Kind of wish I liked blues/hard rock. It's a deep vein. Maybe in my 40's.

Dec 04 2024

Reviewing the reviews of everyone who less than 3 starred. Unimpressed. Ironically, these people are probably children. WU-TANG killa bees

Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson
Dec 05 2024

Second favourite B Boy. This gets better every listen. Not every track is a winner but the winners win by miles.

Rejoicing In The Hands by Devendra Banhart
Dec 06 2024

Used to hate this guy. Can't really remember what he sounds like. Not keen to be reminded. That 'new weird america' scene or whatever was disgustingly pretentious and lame (Joanna Newsom gets a pass even though I don't particularly rate her). The top review guy for this has potentially the worst music takes I've ever seen, just as an aside. Still not listening. Listen to Angels of Light instead.

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Dec 08 2024

Would understand the general doors obsession if they only released one album and blew out or something. This one is already 3 too many and apparently there were 4 more.

In Utero by Nirvana
Dec 10 2024

Don't listen anymore but would still recommend teens listen to this.

Dec 11 2024

Fitty's troll years have entertained me far more than his rap years.

Country Life by Roxy Music
Dec 12 2024

I sure do love Roxy. This one is far from my favourite though, cans aside. Interestingly the models are Michael Karoli of Can's girlfriend and sister. Off to listen to Can instead.

Dec 14 2024

World Class Wrecking Cru Dr Dre will always be the best Dr Dre in my heart. But yeah, what that other guy said about this being important, zeitgeist etc.

Graceland by Paul Simon
Dec 15 2024

You're not African m8. Some belters on here though.

Time Out Of Mind by Bob Dylan
Dec 16 2024

No one needs to hear 90's Dylan albums

From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley
Dec 17 2024

Several tunes. True Love, Suspicious, Ghetto, Gentle. Leave it on the list. Highly recommend a trip to Graceland for the pure American-ness of it.

Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
Dec 18 2024

No one meats it better than the loaf.

Calenture by The Triffids
Dec 19 2024

Born Sandy Devotional & In the Pines are lightyears better. They started rapping on the next one and then completely out of ideas haha.

Back At The Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith
Dec 20 2024

If this is about rooting chickens and Hasil Adkins isn't also on this list, I'm gonna be fuming.

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Dec 21 2024

Embarrassing if you're over 16 and like this

More Specials by The Specials
Dec 22 2024

More?! Fuck me. If any band didn't need more than one album on this list (the first one is deservedly on here). 16 year break after this one says it all... Can't wait to find out there are no Fun Boy Three records on here.

Either Or by Elliott Smith
Dec 24 2024

Definitely my favourite E. Smith

The Stranger by Billy Joel
Dec 25 2024

Tunes galore. Particularly Movin' Out. Billy Joel is still a net negative though and listening to this one comes with the risk of listening to his other, terrible albums.

Dec 26 2024

Would be amazing if it wasn't Christmas music. Christmas (baby please come home) goes unnecessarily hard for a Christmas song. Years ago I was surprised to find that it's nigh impossible to find an artist that hasn't done at least one Christmas song. $$$

Headquarters by The Monkees
Dec 27 2024

Eww, you like the Monkees

Dec 28 2024

Good when I was a teen. Find Em punishing to listen to these days. Hilarious that the top review guy seems to think Eminem is a band.

If You're Feeling Sinister by Belle & Sebastian
Dec 29 2024

Wusses seem to like this so should be on this list to ensure future wusses are pleased. Other wuss-rock is available.

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Dec 30 2024

My favourite post John Cale VU. Love it when Moe sings. "average underground rock album from the 60's". Examples please?

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Dec 31 2024

Always amazing that CCR's discography runs a cool 4 years. Sue me, I sound too much like John Fogerty.

Rapture by Anita Baker
Jan 06 2025

2corny 4me

Bad by Michael Jackson
Jan 07 2025

Shame about the molest

Tigermilk by Belle & Sebastian
Jan 10 2025

See previous Belle & Sebastian review.

Modern Kosmology by Jane Weaver
Jan 13 2025

I like The Silver Globe more but this is also pretty sick. Cool guys have a favourite Jane Weaver album.

Roger the Engineer by The Yardbirds
Jan 17 2025

Whiteman blues has been tiresome since day dot.

The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu
Jan 19 2025

Definitely the kind of music a guy called Crocus Behemoth would make.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab
Jan 20 2025

Stereolab rule. Never entirely connected with this one, however it sure has some belters. One of my favourite gigs in recent memory.

Odelay by Beck
Jan 21 2025

Beck was a pretty cool guy

Astral Weeks by Van Morrison
Jan 23 2025

I find old mate's voice (and opinions) quite grating these days but I used to love the heck out of this. Still listen to Madame George regularly. Can't argue it's classic status. Always blows my mind that it was recorded in 3 sessions.

Parachutes by Coldplay
Jan 24 2025

The best Coldplay album. By stalking reviews, I've noticed some correlation between loving this and hating hip-hop, make of that what you will.

NEU! 75 by Neu!
Jan 27 2025

I love Klaus Dinger so much. Michael Rother, maybe more.

Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors
Jan 31 2025

Bland 00's hipster blandness. Bland.

Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star
Feb 02 2025

Awww hell yeah. Gonna guess a sub 3 general rating. Wrong again nerds. Especially the top review guy; bet that guy likes the eagles.

Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
Feb 03 2025

Clown music made by an absolute clown. It was too easy to be 'freaky' in the 60's, no wonder boomers are scared of everything now. White guys who think going 'doot doot doot' over a splashy drum part is jazz love this. Peaches en pretense legitimately made me say 'fuck off' out loud twice. Anyone who describes an album as 'a movie for your ears' would be utterly and rightly ridiculed these days. Man would have to be in the top 5 of people I'd least like to have at a dinner party. As is frequently the case with reviewers, looks like again only Christgau got it right.

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Feb 04 2025

Just here to recommend these guys first album 'A Storm in Heaven'. An absolute belter of a shoegaze record. Working with Oasis' people was a mistake. Shame the Stones' people fucked them also. This album is fine. Definitely listen to that debut also/instead.

Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Feb 05 2025

It's good. Country Mick Jagger is always funny. But they still pull it off somehow.

Lam Toro by Baaba Maal
Feb 06 2025

Finally something interesting. I mean, I don't like it but at least it's new to me.

Stankonia by OutKast
Feb 08 2025

Pretty much defined the start of the millennium. Willenium be damned.

Suzanne Vega by Suzanne Vega
Feb 09 2025

Can't be bothered tbh

Queen II by Queen
Feb 10 2025

Can't believe this doesn't have Bohemian Rhapsody on it

Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk
Feb 12 2025

Brilliant stuff. Love the Monk, hadn't heard this one before. Man keeps it jazzy and inventive whilst barely ever being irritating.

New Forms by Roni Size
Feb 14 2025

Will trust the drum n bass sproingers on this one. Not for me.

The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe
Feb 15 2025

The illuminati make some pretty mean tunes sometimes

Cross by Justice
Feb 16 2025

The tunes are tunes, the rest is the rest though. Bonn as.

Electric Warrior by T. Rex
Feb 21 2025

Belters start to finish. I've listened to it too many times to get full enjoyment unfortunately. Bolan's crash site was the first place I visited when I moved to London in my 20s. It's a weird place, highly recommend.

McCartney by Paul McCartney

Maybe I'm Amazed is a belter. I prefer McCartney II; there's your proper 'indie' weirdness.

Fun as heck. For whatever reason I thought this came out in the 00's. Probably music TV's fault. Simpler times.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
Mar 05 2025

Absolutely no notes. Flippin slaps. Right down to the album art. Turned off whatever wuss rock I was listening to and immediately laid on some Herbie. Seeing this rated highly really soothes my soul. I love that the most popular one star review guy got this and then immediately gave up on music; blew it!

Couple of absolute belters on here. Always was a shame about this band's personality. Anecdotal observation: The fact that dudes who see this type of band as the peak of indie don't like Wire and Black Flag sums up my issue with this sort of band and their sort of fans.

Mar 12 2025

God I love Bill Callahan. Potentially peaked here; so many years into his career. Can understand his voice isn't for everyone. But the song writing is undeniable. Guessed the total rating exactly.

I saw a band claiming to be these guys in Havana. One of the worst shows I've ever been to. Pretty sure it was a big ol fake but that experience has still tarnished this album for me. Jajajaja. The doco is decent and I'm sure this was cool as heck in '97.

Gorillaz by Gorillaz

The other day I commented to myself that whatever was playing on the radio may have been the worst song I'd ever heard. Turned out it was a solo Damon Albarn tune. Anyway, Gorillaz are pretty cool. Got me into Deltron 3030 who are even cooler. Demon Days is better than this one and they've mostly been pretty lame since then imo.

Next by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
May 01 2025

I see where Nick Cave was coming from. All bit too 'rocking' for me. Some lethal moments e.g. the intro to Faith Healer. But that's quickly ruined by hard rock guitar and sexy 70s guy yelling. Real edgy in 73

Fragile by Yes

Not for me. However... there should be one Yes on this list. I can guarantee this isn't the only one.

Stardust by Willie Nelson
May 20 2025

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
May 31 2025

Thin Lizzy rule but if you're putting live slizzy albums on a list like this, you're thin on ideas. Apparently this is the only Lizzy album on this list also. Jailbreak?! Fuck's sake. Sometimes I'm not sure how the clown who wrote this book kept getting work. If course this has endless 5s. Staying employed by pandering to boomer sensibilities - a tale as old as time.

Toys In The Attic by Aerosmith
Jun 01 2025

Gonna guess there are too many songs about sex with teenagers on here

Supa Dupa Fly by Missy Elliott
Jun 04 2025

Missy rules but gummon... This one doesn't even have any of the hits.

Dog Man Star by Suede
Jun 05 2025

Ripper. I like this one more than the debut. Gnarliest of the britpop fellas.

Queen Of Denmark by John Grant
Jun 06 2025

Absolute belter. And I say that as a guy who is often offput by whimsy and sillyness. Quite funny that all the popular one star reviews seem to be from absolute wowsers. I get that old mate overreaches and he's not the most lyrically subtle guy. But isn't that kind of the point. I mean, the album is called Queen of Denmark. Admittedly, these failings would get him into further strife later in his career but occasionally they'd also propel him to new heights.

Blue by Joni Mitchell
Jun 07 2025

One of the greats, sure. But also quite annoying? Music criticism has to move on from the kind of received wisdom that makes this album always be in the stratosphere of best of lists. (before I paint myself with the misogyny brush - the Beatles, Steely flippin Dan, Stones etc also often fit this mould) Reviewing albums outside of their context could be an empty endeavour. Let's ask Christgau. Call me a contrarian etc. I get frustrated that the zeitgeist doesn't shift. Pop music is still relatively new I guess. Maybe I'm wrong to be frustrated due to that very fact. We're STILL having Joni retrospective live celebrations in the twennytwennies. Lately the internet only seems to reward positive opinions and received wisdom. AI is making that worse. Somehow this album's endless back-pats crystallises these issues for me.This book/app/whatever only further encourages this critical laziness. Dear diary, this nonsense probably needs a sober edit. Anyway... River: 12/10 Miles - Kind of Blue. Also contemporarily overrated (but deserved all of its roses - at the time). Just getting that out now, see ya at that review. Miles 12/10 bloke though (musically). Weezer - the blue album. Yeah, decent.

Playing With Fire by Spacemen 3

HELL YEAH. Now we're talking. Had the privilege of seeing solo Sonic Boom once in little ol Auckland. Was a religious experience. Miss you Kings Arms.

First Band On The Moon by The Cardigans
Jun 09 2025

Until today I couldn't say who that Lovefool song was by. Deservedly a hit. Not sure this album deserves to be on this list though - UK 90s/00s overrepresentation continues.

Lust For Life by Iggy Pop
Jun 10 2025

Iggy has muscles no other man has. That most popular 1 star review guy has the most boring music taste of all time. It's OK to admit that cool stuff just isn't for you mate.

Rid Of Me by PJ Harvey
Jun 11 2025

PEEEEJ. She just keeps getting better. I prefer the Parish era but Albini is Albini

Jun 12 2025

Empires and Dance is the good Simple Minds album. Goes so hard you'd think it's a different band entirely. Reel to Reel Cacophony also rips. This one sucks. Defined 'sell-out', these fellas.

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Jun 13 2025

It's not perfect but this is my favourite Beach Boys. Delightfully idiosyncratic and weird. Carl's acid drenched lyrics tickle me no end. RIP the brother Brian. What an album to get on the day of his death, have just been spinning Pet Sounds.

Low by David Bowie
Jun 15 2025

No notes. (more Eno?)

The Chronic by Dr. Dre
Jun 17 2025

Bonafide classic, especially for the younguns. All highschoolers should be bumping this. Negative reviews always seem to be the most popular when it comes to rap. Wowser boomer opinions rise to the top.

The Predator by Ice Cube

All the NWAs eh. My low reviews for hip hop theory immediately disproven haha. "the wet t-shirt contest, motherfucker" has to be a contender for corniest bar. 60% sure this is where hail Mary mallon got their gag from. Ifykyk Very glad skits are mostly over. Was just listening to Ready to Die. So much nonsense before the raps start. Anyway, this was a good record.

Live At The Regal by B.B. King
Jun 19 2025

Sure. Christgau really likes it so I'll pretend I care about the blues more than I do.

White Light / White Heat by The Velvet Underground
Jun 20 2025

God I love John Cale. Saw old mate play the most futuristic version of Sister Ray in the Barbican while drones were flying around the theatre. Incredible. Imagine not wanting to listen to all 17 mins of Sister Ray. Longer versions are available. Lou is also an OK guy I guess. 1968! It's easy to think that better/wilder experimental music was happening then... I'd love to hear some examples.

Melodrama by Lorde

Loveless is definitely one of the greats. Even though I didn't love loveless, I remember this one being a disappointment. Look forward to listening again. 1000% does not need to be on this list however. Everyone is good with Loveless. Trust your readers to slightly think for themselves??

Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Jun 28 2025

Wow, you guys hate this less than I expected. More fun on paper than in practice to be fair. Eno's involvement sends it up a star. That's just who I am.

Jun 29 2025

Yeah, go on. Better not be any other Streets albums in this book though. Honestly can't believe the hate this is getting. Website needs more chavs. The Streets hit hard on NZ - both this and the previous album. 4.5 million chavs.

Henry's Dream by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Jul 15 2025

Been a while since I listened to this one. It's good, not.my favourite. Have to agree with the consensus - there are far too many Nick Cave albums on here. Every other review I'm perturbed at how lazy the bloke who wrote this book is.

Infected by The The
Jul 17 2025

A band for balding middle aged dudes in pork pie hats. This is the day & this is the night are beltingly good tunes. Especially for young love playlists. Neither of those songs are on this album haha. I would put every penny I have on there being further the The albums on this list.

Dub Housing by Pere Ubu
Jul 18 2025

Freaky stuff from the Crocus & pals. Used to love this. Find it hard to listen to these days. Ultimate example of a band that should only have one album on this list. I'm becoming a broken record but it does piss me off. If you've heard of less than 500 bands, maybe you're not qualified to narrow down the must hears.

Jul 19 2025

Late 90's XTC?! Grow up. We get it, you're British and probably wear a funny hat. Drums & Wires, job done.

Jul 20 2025

Hell yeah wear that funny hat and put as many Fall albums on here as you like. Knew you dickheads wouldn't like this. All my previous Dimery anger is now directed to any sub 3 star loser. Up the Mark E, down with lists. That most popular review is full of it.

I don't think I've met anyone who doesn't like Sexy Boy. Had a good laugh at old mate who thinks he can write a better list but doesn't like this or Tago Mago. Ultimate dunning-kruger dude.

All Hope Is Gone by Slipknot
Nov 22 2025

List would have been sweet with one Slipknot album. Cheers.

High Violet by The National
Nov 24 2025

Ah, the 3rd best National album. Why not. This list should only have Boxer on it.

Groovin' by The Young Rascals
Nov 25 2025

Quite confident this will be forgettable psych pop

16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens
Nov 26 2025

Love this wuss rock to pieces. Chucking the record on. Haters have never had their heart broken. Similar (but more power pop) recommendation that won't be on here: Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes.

Horses by Patti Smith
Nov 27 2025

What a debut. What a time. What a woman.

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Nov 28 2025

Ella's a legend of course. This is pretty tired though, probably slapped in 1959. Slapping was far more normalised back then. Also 3+ hours?! No chance.

Pornography by The Cure
Nov 29 2025

Can't wait for some guy with big hair to shame me for having a wank.

21 by Adele
Dec 01 2025

Good voice etc. She could give it a rest occasionally though.

Dec 02 2025

At one time this was one of my favourite albums. The sound of a band reaching their peak as they partially implode. Jim O'rourke is the flippin man. Always liked a Ghost is Born just that little bit more (sucker for a Hallo Gallo jam). New Tweedy might be the best thing he's done since Ghost is Born.

Only By The Night by Kings of Leon
Dec 03 2025

No thanks. Sex on Fire was the bane of my life for a good 2 years. Still hate hearing it 17 years later (I'm old).

Ready To Die by The Notorious B.I.G.
Dec 04 2025

Man's one hell of a rapper. However, the skits are so annoying that I regret buying this on vinyl. Playlist type man. Remember when everyone put skits on their albums? The 90s eh, the greatest decade in many ways but also so fucking stupid haha.

At Budokan by Cheap Trick
Dec 06 2025

Peak laziness putting a live Cheap Trick album on here. Old mates have some tunes but this makes me worry about how many of their studio albums are in here.

BEYONCÉ by Beyoncé
Dec 07 2025

Gotta give it 5 stars or the missus will have me. Also is my favourite of hers to be fair. Don't love when she goes a bit rocksteady but still slightly better than Lemonade. Irritates me slightly that despite my years of record collecting, this is the most valuable record in our shared collection.

Suicide by Suicide
Dec 08 2025

Can't understate the importance of this. Goes so hard. Especially from a couple of New York's nerdiest boys both very in and very ahead of their time. Bet most losers on this site hate it. Guess: 2.24. Near enough. "Ohh, I hate Dylan and Frankie Teardrop is scary". Music nerdery might not be for you, mates. Stick to your Steely Dans. Review of the reviews: 5 star characters tend to have taste and 1 star characters are basic bois.

Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers
Dec 09 2025

Mr President, there's been a second Chemical Brothers album. Block Rockin' Beats goes hard.

Nevermind by Nirvana
Dec 10 2025

My 3rd favourite Nirvana. Wouldn't put it on now but I was once a teen. Can't deny it's influence - both positive and negative.

The Real Thing by Faith No More
Dec 11 2025

See Nevermind review (less influential). God I used to love FNM. Can barely stand them now other than the pre Patton stuff for the laughs. A signed copy of this got me into record collecting so extra nostalgia points.

Black Metal by Venom
Dec 16 2025

Hell yeah. Big influence on those naughty Norwegians.

Cafe Bleu by The Style Council
Dec 21 2025

Can't believe I'm about to listen to Paul Weller rap. This should be deleted from existence rather than anyone listening to it during their lifetime.

Deloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta
Dec 22 2025

Was peak in the naughties. I'm a bit old for this dang ruckus these days.

Dec 23 2025

I'm firmly in the 'admirer but not a massive fan' camp but this is an easy 5 banger.

New York Dolls by New York Dolls
Dec 24 2025

Huge cultural relevance. Imagine giving this 1 star due to being 'beige' but also giving War on Drugs 5 stars. Confusing stuff.

Histoire De Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg
Dec 25 2025

Just because a thing is about a thing, it isn't necessarily a proponent of that thing. Come on guys, Lolita is not pro-paedophilia. Anyway, Serge is a big pest. 5 stars.

Grace by Jeff Buckley
Dec 26 2025

Old mate needs to chill out vocally quite often but hey, what a talent. I'm going to assume all the poor taste swimming based jokes have been made.

Songs From A Room by Leonard Cohen
Dec 27 2025

Love the man but already too many Lens. Pretty much only Bird on a Wire is essential off this one. Pick one of 'Songs of Love and Hate' or 'New Skin...' and go from there.

Aja by Steely Dan
Dec 28 2025

I'm glad the Eagles bullied these nerds. That's canon, I saw it on youtube.

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits
Jan 12 2026

Whadda beauddie!

Dry by PJ Harvey
Jan 13 2026

Too many peej but she deserves it. I enjoy late period peej heaps more but ya know, 92 she was mad about not getting the vocals gig for Slint. Good stuff.

Savane by Ali Farka Touré
Jan 15 2026

Man, Mali has produced some cool fellas. Tinariwen on the run for being too rock n roll for example. Ali's the OG though

Music by Madonna
Jan 16 2026

Where Madonna briefly stops pretending to be British. The title track is a banger. Ray of Light was heaps better

Connected by Stereo MC's
Jan 18 2026

This definitely sucks

Dookie by Green Day
Jan 20 2026

I'm not too hip to enjoy this. Insomniac was the first album I ever bought so this period of Green Day hooks up the feelings

Jan 21 2026

So much has been said about this. Obviously the praise is deserved and it's influence undoubteable. But you could also make an argument that 'A Day in the Life' is the only truly great song on here. If I'm putting a Beatles album on, it's almost never this one.

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Jan 22 2026

Should certainly be on here. I certainly briefly loved it. However, I haven't been able to stand this band for years. Shit people to boot.

Go Girl Crazy by The Dictators
Jan 23 2026

Haha hell yeah. Great Caribou fact from the top reviewer. Cheers. I vaguely recall stories in the book 'Please Kill Me' of Manitoba being a fuckwit as well. Funny how many bands that aren't the Sex Pistols get labelled as 'proto punk' - protecting Malcolm McLaren's image I reckon.

System Of A Down by System Of A Down
Jan 24 2026

Look, I get why people like this but it's not for me. All a bit adolescent and irritating. That aside, you can't stop me getting my teenage dirtbag on to Spiders.

Cut by The Slits
Jan 28 2026

Classic. Influential as heck. The ladies are mad cool. All that aside, never enjoyed this that much. Prefer the Raincoats.

Let It Be by The Replacements
Jan 29 2026

It's just bloody good. 5 stars for Androgynous and Answering Machine alone. This one through to Pleased to Meet Me, what an insane run. Paul and the boys made it all good to be an emotional boy whilst simultaneously being a drunken numbnuts. Thanks mates.

Chelsea Girl by Nico
Jan 30 2026

Pretentious nonsense but Nico & John Cale had already earned that right by 67.

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
Jan 31 2026

Needs a bit of an edit maybe. George is my favourite boy and every now and then a random track on here will briefly become my favourite song.

Feb 01 2026

Maggie's Farm blows, Tamborine Man blows. Folk music often blows. This is where the brother Rob started to realise that. Easy 5 stars. Any complaint about Bobby's voice comes from a vapidity that I cannot be fucked with, even from my closest Guthries. The same year he'd record Highway 61... Wowee. Too much Dylan on this list? Absolutely. I'm a one album proponent and that's Highway no question. Listen to Subterranean again, watch the music video. Still don't get it? grow up

Future Days by Can
Feb 02 2026

Now we're getting progressive. What great fellas. Delighted to see so many 5 star reviews.

Woodface by Crowded House

The La's by The La's
Feb 15 2026

There She Goes and Timeless Melody are absolute belters. The rest, fairly so-so.

Darklands by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Feb 16 2026

JAMC cool.

Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds
Feb 21 2026

Not their best work but Byrds cool. Really never liked Mr Tambourine man. Anyone's version.

69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields
Feb 23 2026

What an achievement. Only truly love a handful of songs but easy 5 stars.

Feb 24 2026

Damn, this album cover is straight out of 2010. Classic 60's powerful but fucking annoying voice. Deserves its roses but man, I can't stand this carry on - for the same reasons I don't like hard rock. Boomer shit.

Ray Of Light by Madonna
Feb 25 2026

Absolute banger of the music TV era

Spiderland by Slint
Feb 26 2026

Feaarrr. Blew my butt off when I was a young white boy. Don't listen to it often these days. Can't recommend the documentary about these fellas enough. It's on YouTube. Delightful weirdos. Louisville, Kentucky seems to have a way of producing delightful weirdos. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy took the cover photo ya know.

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Feb 27 2026

This flippin' ripped in 4th form.

Imagine by John Lennon
Feb 28 2026

Imagine really captures the entire issue with the hippie movement. Lennon sucked sometimes. "Glad he's dead" might be a bit far. That song really sucks though. But then Jealous Guy. But also the song God. But unfortunately, all the Yoko shit. Anyway, RIP, 3 stars.

Garbage by Garbage
Mar 02 2026

God I hate hearing this on the radio

Mar 04 2026

Air cool but we were good with just Moon Safari. Not sure how I feel about soundtracks being included. Filling the pages as per eh Bob. That one guy who said Air are his Radiohead has righteously good taste. Extra star for old mate.

Happy Sad by Tim Buckley
Mar 20 2026

This is already the 3rd Tim Buckley album I've got. Dude is fine but that's simply outrageous.

We're Only In It For The Money by The Mothers Of Invention
Mar 21 2026

This list is fucked. When it was laid down, maybe not. However, in 2026 Zappa is less than meaningless. Imagine being teen who likes Zappa now. I'm going to find the guy who gave this 5 stars and Highway 61 one. Jesus christ. Moustache.

Songs Of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
Mar 24 2026

Has to be one of history's best debuts. 'One of us Cannot be Wrong' will forever be in my top 10 songs. Even Lou Reed admitted that Len reached song writing nirvana on that one. I stand by my previous assertion that there are too many Cohens on this list.

Scott 4 by Scott Walker
Mar 25 2026
Roxy Music by Roxy Music
Mar 27 2026

So good that Eno was out swords-manning Ferry during these days. What a debut. Old mates really changed the game.

She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper
Mar 28 2026

The Carly Rae Jepsen of the time.

The Coral by The Coral
Apr 01 2026

Quite impressed that these fellas seem to remain operational. Classic 3 star, fine, not 1001 worthy. Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually released a goodie.

Picture Book by Simply Red
Apr 02 2026

Sure. Man, that one 5 star review guy up top has some of the worst taste I've ever witnessed.

Smile by Brian Wilson
Apr 03 2026

Pretty much what the top guy said. I've spent way more time listening to the filth that is the Cocaine Sessions. Oh Lord is the best piece of outsider music ever recorded, by some of the all time most famous boys.

Under Construction by Missy Elliott
Apr 04 2026

Work it. Second Missy album on the list is fucking ridiculous though. Old mate Dimery knows just the two female hip-hop artists, I can tell from his hat.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
Apr 05 2026

Ken Oath. One of the great sleeves.

Trio by Dolly Parton

Elastica by Elastica
Apr 12 2026

Wouldn't be on here if it wasn't British but should be on here. Cheers.

With The Beatles by Beatles
Apr 13 2026

Do we need every beatles album? This one isn't exactly big time seminal. Good enough Mr. Postman cover. But are the Marvelettes on here? Doubt it.

Marquee Moon by Television
Apr 14 2026

Very seminal. I never loved it as much as I should I guess. Music is just isn't for that guy who quit the list due to this album haha.

Bluesbreakers by John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
Apr 19 2026

White man blues but England

I’m a Lonesome Fugitive by Merle Haggard
Apr 20 2026

*Cries about country music, gives Limp Bizkit a 5. Fuckin teens man. Also, while I'm reviewing reviews: 'Okie from Muskokie' is not jingoistic. Amazing that you know that word but have zero grasp of subtly or irony. Old mate probably holds that belief whilst concurrently being that reddit guy who blows up when people mistakenly treat 'Born in the USA' as patriotic. Fuck, I'm the reddit guy now. Didn't mean to get this riled about a middling Merle album but this list is boring me and I've had 5 beers, here's the real review: Some good Merles on here. Not sure it's his best but I'm no expert.

Blood And Chocolate by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Apr 24 2026

Yeah Bob, Elvis Costello's 11th album sure is essential listening. Print it.

No Other by Gene Clark
Apr 25 2026

God I love this album. Can't believe Geffen didn't want to release.

Red Dirt Girl by Emmylou Harris
Apr 27 2026

Emmylou cool but seriously, her 19th album?! Learn more artists, Robert.

Timeless by Goldie
Apr 29 2026

Don't love but I understand Goldie is the man to jungleists

Out Of The Blue by Electric Light Orchestra
Apr 30 2026

Tune after tune, after tune. (Also, plenty of nonsense. But, who could begrudge the Jeff some nonsense). Sometimes dadrock rocks, ya know.

Southern Rock Opera by Drive-By Truckers
May 01 2026

I prefer Decoration Day, old mates got better when Isbell joined. Truckers rule though, happy to see them here.

Murder Ballads by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
May 04 2026

5 stars for the duets. Heads into 'cheesy' territory quite often but we'll let 90s Nick Cave get away with that.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
May 06 2026

Good addition. Mostly annoys me, personally. Got sick of hearing about it in 2020. Fantano music: minus 1 star. To address a random review: I'm quite sure that more than 3 female artists debuted in the 90s. Liz Phair cooler anyway.

Face to Face by The Kinks
May 07 2026

Not as timeless as other Kinks albums

Survivor by Destiny's Child

Just so nice. We love you Alex Chilton. Listen to his coked out cover of 'I Will Always Love You', cheers.

Vanishing Point by Primal Scream
May 14 2026

Really not old mate's best work. Cool band when they're on though. This list should only have screamadelica then people can decide for themselves.

In Our Heads by Hot Chip
May 15 2026

Hot Chip cool. Surely earlier albums are more essential? I don't know but I'm fairly confident Rob would have blown it. Or in classic over doing it fashion, they're on here too.

Superunknown by Soundgarden
May 16 2026

At one time this was my favourite album. I'm no longer 19 unfortunately.

Metallica by Metallica
May 18 2026

All down hill from here haha. Can't deny the hits though.

Eagles by Eagles
May 19 2026

I hate the fuckin Eagles man. At least this one has their good Yacht Rock songs.

Life's Too Good by The Sugarcubes
May 20 2026

Haha, that 2nd top reviewer went on a fun journey. This album is also a very fun journey in a delightfully weird way, much like the Icelandic people in my limited experience.

I'm Your Man by Leonard Cohen
May 21 2026

Len + synth nonsense is an enjoyable idea (less enjoyable listening), there are some great songs on here. And, sure, it was a return to form. All that aside, there are far too many Len's on this list, you could cut this one.

Faust IV by Faust
May 23 2026

Cowards don't like this.

A Seat at the Table by Solange
May 25 2026

The extreme positivity around this album was excruciating when it came out but, ya know, even though she'd never again reach the heights of Losing You, this is a dang good record. As expected, crybabies in the reviews crying about Beyoncé. Sort it out fellas.

B-52's by The B-52's
May 26 2026

Rock lobstah. I know nothing about the B-52s as people but I can only imagine they would have been insufferable.

The Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett
May 27 2026

Blimmin mad, this fella. Blimey. Far more interesting than most of Floyd's wank. Admittedly, not particularly good. Outsider music by a former insider.

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
May 28 2026

Extremely surprised to learn this came out in the 80s. Quite influential I guess. It cool.

Arise by Sepultura

Armed Forces by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Jun 02 2026

How many albums does this middling dude have on here

War by U2
Jun 03 2026

Not a big U2 guy but Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Years Day are bangers. Imagine if U2 was your favourite band.

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jun 04 2026

The triple pun/entendre of the art work really captures the almost cleverness of the fellas. Should 100% be on the list, I just don't like prog rock.

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin

Can't believe that woman yelled 'jewish' at our mate Zimmerman. Before the Flood is the best Dylan live album, cheers. Are there no Cat Power albums on this list. That's fucked. One star review is for Dimery.

Psychocandy by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Jun 18 2026

Cowards don't like this. Always cracks me up how tough the Reid brothers try to come across whilst looking like they do. Particularly as older men.

Kollaps by Einstürzende Neubauten
Jun 19 2026

Not for sooks. Admittedly a fucking annoying listen but you've gotta trust the process. And put even a hint of consideration into what WEST Berlin was probably like in 1981. Thanks nerds, Blixa would waste all you babies. This project really elucidates the music taste bell curve.

Dummy by Portishead
Jun 20 2026

Oh yes, very nice. Took me a while to warm to old mates in my youth but I was a silly boy. Third also goes hard and I know next to nothing about the one in the middle. That guy who gave this a resounding review of 'Bad' and then apparently quit this project is my hero.

Want Two by Rufus Wainwright
Jun 21 2026

Self proclaimed gay messiah etc. Pretty sure I've already had a Rufus record and zero of his dad's or sister's. This Dimery guy stinks.

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan
Jun 22 2026

My immediate reaction to the album art: this is going to be corny & white. But, 1957, not white. Let's see.

Jun 23 2026

One day we'll be ready to have the discussion about whether this is a bit dated. Call me contrarian but I've always found it mildly lame. I can accept that probably wasn't the case in the 70s. But that was also over 50 years ago. Full wanker mode: can one of the top selling records of all time really have been all that progressive. Counter: it's still considered progressive 50 years later. The good thing is albums of this ilk caused a visceral reaction in the underground and we got new types of interesting music as a result. For all those reasons and more: generous 3 stars. I'd never put it on and often change the station if it's playing on the radio but can't full hate. On The Run goes hard.

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
Jun 24 2026

Speaking of fellas who changed the game. Rules but I cannot listen to an entire Beasties album, the yelling (especially Mike D) gets very grating. Dated sure, but they grew with the times.

Shleep by Robert Wyatt
Jul 11 2026

Sure, Bobby W is a boring old biddie. But he's allowed to be. I don't make the rules. The list probably doesn't need one of his 90's records however.

Duck Stab/Buster & Glen by The Residents
Jul 14 2026

Not necessarily 'good' but there's nothing like these fellas. So suck it up, at least one of their albums belongs here forever and always.

I Am a Bird Now by Antony and the Johnsons

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Jul 23 2026

This dude was a pedo I reckon. Track 8 should have been a warning. Quincy cool, the stars are for him.

Hearts And Bones by Paul Simon

I wrote something pithy about old mate's sixth album being on here. Only to realise that Graceland came out after this one. Only Graceland belongs here. Lol, there are 3 Paul Simon albums on this list. I hate this Dimery guy more each day. Perhaps this should be included if only to help people realise that without colonialist thievery, Paul Simon would have gone on to continue sucking. At least there are two Fela albums on this list.

Such a belter. Amuses me no end that this has become a must have for burgeoning record collections. I'm sure I remember it at one time being the punchline of various gags.

Love my Bri. Even he says that he didn't invent ambient music though. Review review: why would you expect ambient music to have a rhythmic structure. What a jackass.

Talking Timbuktu by Ali Farka Touré

Re top review: at least it's an interesting guy getting 2 records instead of the 9th Elvis Costello. But yeah, as cool as Ali is, this ain't exactly essential. (I realise now you were making a similar point. Way to skim-read, me)
