Incredible rock opera. Forgot how much I liked this album on my first listen
I enjoyed it slightly more than the first time I listened. Unfortunately, my main complaint that it was too repetitive is still there. There’s a ton of energy on this record, but I’d rather just listen to The Stooges or The Clash.

This sounds like it was recorded using a tin can.
This album is just honestly way too long. With that being said, it inspired most of my favorite musicians (Eric Church, Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell, and many others in the country and Americana scene).
Prince fucked my ear for 1 hour and 10 minutes. The first half of this album is amazing and then it drags towards the end.
Hopefully I go to heaven, but if not this is the album the devil will use to torture me.
This album is evidence that the majority going through this challenge like dad rock only. These drums are thumping and the guitars are blaring. It’s fucking weird, but it’s a solid rock and roll album.
Every song kind of sounds the same and the vocals get grating after a while. Not the worst music I’ve heard, but definitely generic.

For such an amazing singer and the fact this is a soul record, it’s really devoid of any soul.
Just what I wanted! A 69 song album with a run time of 2:30 hours of songs that all sound the same!
Didn’t do a whole lot for me. The vocals grew on me a marginal amount and the music behind it was good enough to be productive listening to it as background music.

Any album that has a song as good as Train in Vain is a 5 in my book.
If this album was more entertaining, I’d start a rumor that this is actually a Coldplay album. But no one here in America cares about or likes this type of music, and I’ll forget about this in music in 15 minutes anyways.
After listening to several post Kid A Radiohead albums from this project, I’ve learned that Yorke’s vocals annoy me when the music isn’t heavily guitar based.
It’s a complete and utter joke that nearly every country and metal album are under 3 average ratings and this pile of shit is over 3. It’s like listening to knock off Scooby Doo cartoon music.
Honestly, I didn’t hate it.
My favorite modern artists like Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Isbell, and many many others wouldn’t be making music without this album. It’s perfect.

This album did nothing to get rid of my dislike for Genesis.
I feel like I’m being too harsh giving this a 1, but there’s a few factors. The singing is distracting from any good songwriting that may be here. The music behind this is quite boring and does not add to any songwriting. In fact, it takes more a way. Finally, this is so boring that I kept checking how many songs were left when it’s only a 36 minute album.
This album starts out pretty rough. Seems like Nick Cave was trying too hard on some of these vocals. Then mid-way through Nick Cave does a great job of creating the ominous gothic style he is so great at. Let Love In is a better album though.
This album really overstayed its welcome. Too long and nothing interesting here.
I would have given this a 3, but the hippie bullshit on the last three songs pissed me off.
An extra point for being 16 minutes long
Cohen is a storyteller, lyricist, and poet. Not a singer and honestly, not even a proficient musician. All of this being said, the beauty of his words shine throughout this album.
I just do not see how Drum and Bass belongs on this list. Maybe I’m just ignorant… but definitely seems like one of the few genres in this list that takes the least amount of talent to make.
Some hippie bullshit
Very average, but nothing extremely wrong with it.
It was fine. Felt surprisingly quick for a 59 minute album. It became background noise as I was tidying up…. And many others have said the same which sums up its worthiness to be on this list.
“This is a Bad” on track 4 accurately describes this album. At its best, which is the beginning of every track, it sounds like video game menu music. Then these drums kick in and they do absolutely nothing for you because the music behind it is soulless. If someone told me this was created by AI, I’d damn near believe them. Timeless piece of a company’s holding music or a hotel’s elevator music.
Worth listening to for any Motorhead fan to hear the beginning of Lemmy. Unlike any Motorhead song though, these are not straight to the point. It’s filled with 8 minute jams with Lemmys playing and synths that are outer worldly. Not bad by any means, but it’s extremely long and all of disc 1 sounds similar.
This is truly atrocious. The most aggressive British guy singing like he’s a drunk man on a cruise about being bricked up over disco beats. How the fuck did people like this at the time?
This guy is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard… was the original king of soul… is in the Rock Hall of Fame and somehow is still criminally underrated. The last three songs aren’t as strong as the beginning of the album, but it’s still damn good 60’s soul music.

There are so many incredible songs in here. Fun moments like Jungle… but it does become tedious at times.
Her singing talent is undeniable on this album. But you have to get past mid 2000’s R&B and pop production and some rough tracks like “Thank You (Dedication to the Fans….) which comes across as pretentious ego stroking, even though I don’t think that was the point and “Nasty Naughty Boy” which features immature moaning on the song. 2.5

This is why we do this. The melodies in this album are fantastic. Great songwriting, fantastic guitar tones and riffs. It’s not a bad thing when you have to debate between a 4 or a 5.
I don’t dislike Echo and the Bunnymen…. But I’m starting to get the idea that if you’ve heard one of their albums… you’ve heard them all.
The second song sounds like literal diarrhea. It’s also not a coincidence that this album is shit too.

I’m glad they fixed a lot of the recording issues (even if they were most likely intentional) on Darklands. The songwriting is so buried in all of the reverb here that it just becomes a grating listen.

I just don’t get Joni Mitchell. Her singing style and phrasing is so obnoxious that anything she’s trying to say as a poet is thrown out of the window for me. There are amazing musicians on this record, but again… the pretentious of Joni Mitchell makes them even harder to enjoy.

I know the point of this album is the mish-mash of genres, but at many points it just felt like gibberish. The overall sound of the music is solid though.
This is an enjoyable album. I don’t think it’s worth 4 stars, but that is probably more of my own music tastes with modern r&b. This has no business being one of the most poorly rated albums on here though.
This is a meandering album, with songs that never really go anywhere.
This album is a compilation of singles that were released from 1981-1986, with that being the case, the album was already dated in 1986. Other landmark rap albums released in 1986 included two foundational albums in American music history: Raising Hell by Run DMC and Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys. It also does not help that this album suffers from the stain of the allegations against Africa Bambaataa.
Just a really solid millennial optimism album.
It feels like they’re borrowing a ton from other British albums on this. Not sure if that’s the point, but Start! Has the Taxman bass riff, and Scrape Away is similar to The Clash.
This album is just good pop, and Black Cat is one of the best pop songs of the 80’s. There’s just some fat here that could be trimmed.

Without a doubt in my mind this is the least deserving album to be on this list, and this list is plagued by issues. There are very mediocre electronica albums that are over 1.5 hours long. There are British groups of the 80’s that all sound the same (this album happens to fall in this category), and then there are the experimental albums that deserve to be on the list, such as Throbbing Gristle, and yet, are not easy to listen to. This album is hard to listen to because there is not a single outstanding quality about it. The singing is mediocre, the songwriting is the same love song over and over again (or I can assume, because it’s the same slow song over and over again). It’s constantly hitting you with cheesy 80’s production, there is no groove, no guitars, or really anything of substance. There may be another album I hate more on this list eventually…… but this one will be tough to beat.
Her voice is so haunting across this entire album. I don’t know how often I’ll revisit, but damn it’s worth hearing.
I just don’t think I understand Beck as someone who pays attention to lyrics. I understand that Beck uses his lyrics as more of an instrument to communicate rhythm… but I cannot enjoy his music much because all of the lyrics are nonsense.
There are some juggernaut pop hits on this thing, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana, and Smooth Criminal are some of the best pop songs ever made… and they’re all on one album. I do things songs like Liberian Girl and I Just Can’t Stop Loving You bring it down a notch though
I want to talk to whoever produced and mixed this album.
