Album Summary
GI, stylized as (GI), is the only studio album by American punk rock band the Germs. Often considered the first full-length hardcore punk album, it was released in the United States in October 1979 on Slash Records with catalog number SR 103. The album was later released in Italy in 1982 by Expanded Music with the catalog EX 11. The album's title is an acronym for "Germs Incognito", an alternate name the band used to obtain bookings when their early reputation kept them out of Los Angeles-area clubs. After (GI)'s release, the band would only undertake one more recording session, for the soundtrack album to Al Pacino's 1980 film Cruising. On December 7, 1980, a year after the release of (GI), vocalist Darby Crash killed himself. The entire album was included on the 1993 compilation CD (MIA): The Complete Anthology. In 2012, (GI) was reissued on CD with "Caught in My Eye" as a bonus track, after "Shut Down".

I own it. It's influential and had an impact. It's got a place in history for when it came out and made more legendary by their riotous shows and, sadly, Darby Crash's death. That Pat Smear went on to be in Nirvana and The Foo Fighters in different capacities also means there's a footnote here and there in the history of western popular music that ensures Germs live on, even if slightly incognito and through the side door rather than smashing in the front door which their 1979 selves would've preferred. Do I listen to it frequently? Not really. I don't pick it up often compared to something like the first Bad Brains records or an early Minor Threat recording...or The Ramones, Black Flag, or even The Dead Kennedys' early stuff. Germs got in early and made a mark but there's other early American punk that grabs my ears and my heart more.
Really liked lexicon devil before going into this. It’s the only song on the album worth the listen. Gotta respect the influence of the album though regardless
This isn't even music imo

this is a piece of genuine ass. fuck this shit.
The Brits Di punk better. Some Americans also do Punk better. But this is ok, a little fast at times.
Punk all sounds the same. How does one tell the good from the bad?
nee ned gut.
Classic early Cali punk that still has never given it's due praises, partly because it wasn't part of the influential East Coast scene but eventually because of Darby's death.

Very punk, rough at the edges. Couple of catchy hooks

Gastro-Intestinal by Germs...this is bound to be good.
Good little California punk record. Like real punk hardcore. Good stuff. Interesting to see this was pat smears band and Belinda Carlisle played with them. I liked it.
[odslušao i napisao 18/10/26]
The Germs were definitely a key band in the early days of hardcore, and this will always be a classic album. Plus, Pat Smear is a great guitarist. He ended up becoming one of the guitarists for Nirvana and then joined the Foo Fighters. Now, even though it's important and some people really love it, I think it's a little overrated when it's on some top album lists.
Fun punk album, the tracks come at you very fast. Not hugely memorable but it's good. Favourites: Lexicon Devil We Must Bleed
It was a decent punk album. Short and sweet, a musical punch to the face. Absolutely fulfils the assignment!
I used to love punk i kind of grew out of it. When you listen to it, it's exactly how would singing and musicality is when you imagine a punk rock band. Garbled singing, almost impossible to understand the lines and a quick and chaotic rhythm of the instruments. Although, this standalone isn't enough criteria for rating, i unfortunately wanna give a low score lol. The punk is punking, sure. Lyrics especially, i think few of them are quite impressive. But generally, i just fucking skipped half of it i couldn't listen to it. But there's one song that was shining through and it's Manimal. Like, i wasn't expecting that beginning.
This is so much NOT me.
That certainly was… an album
not my cup of tea
Aw FUCK YEAH!! I've always wanted to listen to this, even before doing this list. The backstory of this is badass (and sad), and I've always been intrigued! 01. What We Do Is Secret Oh yeah. I'm gonna like this. A political song to start off? Count me in! 02. Communist Eyes Just cool as fuck. 03. Land Of Treason So kick-ass!!!!!! Immaculate instrumentation!!! 04. Richie Dagger's Crime So fuckin' fun. Awesome guitar!!! 05. Strange Notes Absolutely BANGIN' bass!!! Vocal performance is kick-ass too!! 06. American Leather Extremely hard to make out the lyrics on this one, but still sounds badass. 07. Lexicon Devil Super infectious! Absolutely love it! 08. Manimal Great lyrics, with a lot of energy!!!! 09. Our Way Honestly pretty generic compared to the rest of the album. Still great! 10. We Must Bleed Feels like a mantra. Scary, even. Love it. 11. Media Blitz The sampled TV half-way through is badass. A song that's still true today. 12. The Other Newest One I'm not the biggest fan of sex songs... but this is lowkey a bop. Still don't care for the lyrics, but damn this is fun. 13. Let's Pretend My favorite so far. My favorite lyrics so far. I don't wanna get into it. 14. Dragon Lady Ohhh.... dragon lady.... *cums*. (Really fun and cool song, sick instrumentation.) 15. The Slave Was cool, too short to live an impact. 16. Shut Down (Annihilation Man) A wee bit longer than the rest of the tracks. Was usually improvised live... which I'm pretty sure includes this recording. It's cool, but it's not something I particularly love. Reminds me of Nameless, Endless by Nirvana. This is badass. This quickly has become one of my favorite punk albums!
shit
CLASSIC punk. Absolutely a snapshot in time. Not necessarily something I need in my life, but a great touchpoint for the west coast punk scene and what it sounded like. Shoddy production that's still better than a lot of their peers. Better musicianship than you'd expect. Also, the lore of the Germs is something special to behold.
Influence, story and live show-energy score. Curious what they would've developed to as a band without Darby's demise.
Wasn’t memorable punk.
the only thing i like about punk is imagining the energy of being into it in 1970s sunset boulevard of west Hollywood. that would be fun. if that were what you were into.
So punk, it sometimes sounded like the band were playing a different song to the singer. Not really for me.
Nah
Just because you have access to musical instruments and a garage doesn't mean you should cut a record
Pønk
Панкуха с привкусом саморазрушения.
10/1/26. Shout out to Pat Smear! Songs are super quick, hard, and loud, sometimes out of control. But still a good example of 70s punk rock; last track surprised me.
Shite
Hilariously attempted a listen while driving home from the mountain with Jordan and immediately put back my pretty drives playlist (eg plantasia and like, idk Bon Iver💀) // Finally listening after a week, and idk. Wild for 1979, but I don’t think I’m capable of hardcore? And their shows were apparently wildly violent on top of the heroin. Still, can def appreciate it and RIP and also hi Pat Smear!
I'm aware of this album, but I don't think I know any of these tracks. I'm mostly going in blind, but looking forward to this listen. If Darby actually sang on this instead of just barking, I'd probably put this in "Classic Album" territory. The rest of the band is fantastic. That being said, he's not so bad that this is unlistenable. I'll be adding this to my list of albums to listen to again.
I can acknowledge it's significance and I'm sure it influenced many of the alternative/rock bands that I would go on to love, but I just never got too into punk so this is an album I would just probably never listen to again. It just doesn't do anything for me.
Unlistenable. No, literally, it's unlistenable. I don't understand a single word the singer is singing.
These punk albums seem to only get worse
I see what they are going for but it just sucks, this doesn’t feel “punky” in a good way, it sounds like a tantrum a kid would have, just screaming words and whacking the drums. The guitar work ranged from boring to meh to good, which just averages to meh for the album.
4/10
Better than Coldplay
Nee, man. Daai album was fokken kak.
Rating it purely on how much I enjoyed it and how much I want to hear it again. I understand it was novel at the time, it's influence etc. and I'm glad I heard it but bottom line the music sucks
sloppy nonsense
This is the kind of thing I would have loved to have gone to a gig 20 years ago with stuff like this, but actually sticking headphones on and listening to? Nah. But I'll give it 3 stars because a gig would have been a blast.
Never heard of this album or artist before. I do like punk music but wouldn't listen to this many songs in a row from this era. I find it to be a bit repetitive in song structure. I will give them credit for having 17 songs on this album, most of them were under 2 mins. Also, didn't know Joan Jett produced this album. 1.) What We Do Is Secret: If this is an indication of the rest of the album, I am going to struggle to make out the lyrics of this album this morning. 2.) Communist Eyes: You know what it is? Its the Tasmanian Devil doing punk rock. I like it. This is an interesting song because I never know which political ideology that punk follows, maybe besided anarchism, and here it outlines it that whether you take the good & bad of communism or capitalism, its a double-edged sword. 3.) Land of Treason: I definitely needed lyrics up to make out the words. 4.) Richie Dagger's Crime: I do like this one. It is a bit more upbeat and has a good bridge and a good bass line in the chorus. 5.) Strange Notres: Shorter lyrics on this one. Kinda wish there was more to the guitar solo than letting it ring. 6.) American Leather: High energy, really struggled to make out the lyrics on this one. 7.) Lexicon Devil: Good guitar riff in the intro, similar to hair metal bands of the day. Faster pacing song. I imagine this would have been crazy to see live, wouldve been intense or everyone would be off-beat. 8.) Manimal: Didn't like the holding notes for the chorus on this song. Sounds like someone trying to pass a kidney stone. 9.) Our Way: This song is interesting cause it could be more prog rock than punk rock with the slower beat of it. You could convince me its a Captain Beefheart song. 10.) We Must Bleed: Very repetitive. This one was either one minute or three minutes too long. 11.) Media Blitz: I like the bridge on it. I would like it more if the singer wasn't off-beat on some lines. I also like the incorporation of broadcasts. 12.) The Other Newest One: This one has an occurrence that comes up with punk music of this era. At times, there is weird accent that punk singers do. Another band that does it sometimes is the Cramps. Just a weird thought. 13.) Let's Pretend: I like the drums on this one. Interesting song. 14.) Dragon Lady: Looked up the meaning behind the song, cool little late 70s LA punk rock history. 15.) The Slave: Cool guitar effect on this one. 16.) Shut Down (Annihilation Man): O no, over 9 min song. Yea im gonna have to skip this one.
Communist Eyes, Strange Notes, Lexicon Devil stood out. This might be one of the best punk albums I've heard. 4.5/5
Not my thing. They all sound the same to me
I fuc wid it but its not as fun to listen to as uk equiv just cos theyre american. Pretty good tho still
плотный жирный панк 4.5
jokes on me, i actually love this. DID NOT SEE THIS COMING, i listen to pretty much everything, but kalo soal lagu punk masih jrg banget. genre punk kebanyakan gw dengerin ya dari 1001 ini, gak ekspek bakalan sesuka itu sama album ini. probably gonna have this on repeat
A slightly disappointing four star. I was bloody loving this from the start straight through to Manimal but it fell away after that. I was still good but not the dead cert five star I was expecting. Top Track - Manimal
- This was just okay... the melodies don't stick for me, and the songs don't really go anywhere. - Don't love the off-key vocals and can't understand most of the lyrics. - Instrumentation can be hard to distinguish (feels muddy), but there are some cool moments instrumentally. - It has a lot of energy, but I got sick of it pretty quickly. - Thankfully, it's fairly short, and I like the second half more than the first.
Leiðinleg áferð, og stundum ekki í takt?
Immediately into the chaotic screaming in the opening song. I have no idea what the singer is saying, but it’s so upbeat and sorta deranged in a good way. I want to head bang and mosh to this. So… the lead singer died not long after the band released its one and only album. What a tragic ending. RIP Darby Crash. He and his band made a fantastic punk album, and you can hear their influence on other artists.
Track By Track What We Do Is Secret - ok! Messy, thrashy very short opening number. Guitar is great actually. Communist Eyes - like the lyrics and snarling energy. Can hear definitely some pre-pop-punk type chord changes here as well. Very nice. Land Of Treason - starting with a more epic, slow opening chord and then cheekily changes pace (keeping us on our toes!) with that fast tap in with the drums. The lyrics are nice here, quite poetic. Not what I was expecting. Richie Dagger’s Crime - fun, strong, angular riff. Sharp. This almost reminds me of someone like Buzzcocks. Similar energy, to me. Strange Notes - a swirling, whirling energy to this one, with those bends. Again, very tight. Good drumming. Could not for the life of me understand what he’s saying. Had to look up the lyrics :) American Leather - a very short blast of yelling. Speaking about feeling ‘so confined’ & ‘conflict’, etc. All very punk. Lexicon Devil - got a good energy this one. Beginning to feel a bit samey by track 7 now. But was decent this one. Manimal - a slight change here. Quite good riff also. Kind of like the animal imagery as well, fits the feral, raw feel quite well. Our Way - slower one. His slightly incoherent screamsinging puts across the energy very well but again I gotta look up the words! We Must Bleed - a proper messy one. Intense. But jarring this one. Biting, downright violent lyrics. Didn’t like. Media Blitz - a political statement. Good lyrics here again. Like the radio outro. The Other Newest One - aww. Kind of sweet (haha). This is the closest this album gets to softness. Even it’s quite brittle as well. Sort of a story, details a relationship. Not bad. Let’s Pretend - more animal snarling, lyrically and musically. He’s got that down. There does seem to be layers to these lyrics, maybe. Not sure. Dragon Lady - great drum intro. Nice title. Multiple voices or double tracked? Works kind of well and a nice little switch up with the vocal production. Makes it stand out. The Slave - nice when a song starts with a solo riff. This one recalling the messy energy from the beginning of the album. Nice slides and guitar effects, like planes taking off or something. Shut Down [Annihilation Man] - ooo. An epic, slower screaming, snarling one. Gnarly. Stomping and bluesy. Didn’t really like it, mainly as it was too long. Overall Review: If I were to compare this and the Sex Pistols’ album, I think I’d choose this. The songs are punchy, I do slightly prefer the energy here. The band are somehow tighter, whilst also being very loose and thrashy. I do think this was really made to be live though. It sounds like it’s somehow out of time, even though it was the ‘70s. Kind of could’ve been in any decade from the ‘60s beyond. To me, anyway. Kind of cool that Joan Jett produced it as well. Whilst I didn’t care for all the music, I thought the lyrics were smart, biting and a little witty at times. Impressed with there. Also, some of the songs ending so abruptly (at least on the Apple Music version I’m listening to) feels kind of jarring at times. Ultimately this album and genre is not really for me. I sort of felt like I was enduring some of the songs, but I appreciated the energy at times and certainly felt it! 2.5/5 Favourite Songs: Communist Eyes, Media Blitz, Dragon Lady
it was a bit much
Some of the first Hardcore. Gotta do it
Solid early punk… except for the last song.
Hardcore punk fronted by Oscar The Grouch with laryngitis. Done far better in the 90s by the US movement - The Distillers, Randid, etc. Handy drummer and bassist, guitar lacks definition.
One day I’ll find a punk album that really clicks with me. Today is not that day. This was garbled and nonsensical. No thanks.
No me encantó al principio pero ya en su totalidad me agrado bastante, jamás había escuchado de ellos y tampoco había escuchado un álbum asi de "punk"
not my jam
Not bad but I will probably never listen to this again.
I like punk music on paper, I really do. Punk is ostensibly against "The Man." I hate the Man. Fuck the Man!! Punk is about toppling harmful status quos. Sign me up. You know who likes the status quo? The Man. See my earlier comment on fuck re: the Man. That said, some of this stuff is just so hard to like. It's cartoonish and noisy, and it just kind of sucks. Punk cannot exist in a vacuum. Say every band sounded like Hall and Oates. It would be inevitable that someone would say, "hey, how about this, but it sucks?" It's not that hard of an idea to come up with, frankly. Conversely, if every band sounded like Germs, (ie copies The Sex Pistols but with hardly any hooks or musicality to speak of) there wouldn't arise from that a Hall and Oates, or The Beatles or take your pick as a backlash to shitty for shitty's sake music. Like, I know it's the point, but the vocalist doesn't even sing on key. And I know that's supposed to freak me out or, like, free my mind, but it doesn't. And maybe that's because I'm--oh Oh no. Am I...The Man? I mean, ok, I'd much rather listen to any yacht rock record than this but...that doesn't mean I'm the Man...I certainly don't feel Mannish. Shit. *Am* I the man? Oh well, fuck this record. Edit: So the chief of my local police station read this review and reached out, wanting to recruit me. I start on Monday.
Good.
I appreciate it's influence and importance but I'm not a fan of hardcore punk and this album did not help with my dislike toward the genre. Really don't like this stuff
панк. не менше й не більше
2 These 1001 albums are something we, collectively, certainly not individually, must listen to.
Supposedly Germs were America’s answer to the Sex Pistols, but by the time this album came out in 1979 the Pistols were long gone making the question moot. Produced by Joan Jett, this album feels kind of empty and pointless, and derivative without adding anything new or interesting. The sound is too clean and lacking in any of the energy that they might have had live. The best track by far is the album closer which features a nine minute live improvisation in the studio which makes me think that maybe they could have had something, but sadly we’ll never know because a year later in December 1980 front man Crash Derby emulated his hero Sid Vicious one last time by taking a deliberate heroin overdose. Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

Bad. They don’t even know how to play instruments, I understand it was ground breaking. Will listen to again to give it another chance
Let's start with the positives. I really like the cover art's minimalist design. I also like the short song lengths. As long as they're complete musical statement and not dinky little interludes, I could listen to dozens of 1-minute tracks without getting bored. Now onto the bad stuff. There's very little to appreciate here in terms of musical skill. The drums throughout are fine, but recorded so poorly that you can mostly only hear the cymbals, crashes, and the clean-cut snare sound (though that snare is often washed out by the cymbals/crashes). The bass, though pretty strong in tracks like Manimal, is barely audible in the mix. Re the singing: vague, unenunciated grunting won't do. Yesterday I listened to a horrific live cover of Nirvana's About A Girl – the Puddle of Mudd one – and I can't help but think about it while listening to Germs. It sounds kind of like Sisyphus yelling to his friends to bring him another gin and tonic while being slowly crushed by a boulder. The singing is almost unequivocally crap, helped only slightly by the fact that the poor guy seems to be trying to sing in tune. (The same cannot be said for rambling vocalists, or, god forbid, rappers.) But the melodies themselves are nothing to keel over for, and there are several instances in which the exact same melody is used on two different tracks – sometimes in back-to-back ones. Communist Eyes / Land of Treason may as well be one four-minute song with a short breath-catching intermission. The tempos, drum patterns, and chords are identical (or try extremely hard to be). Lexicon Devil is marginally better than the songs before it. There are sections, mainly the prechoruses, where the singing sounds kind of decent. After typing that out, I wasn't at all surprised to see this ranked #1 on the album by number of streams. We Must Bleed also earns a shoutout: the chord choices are rock-solid and grant the song a ton of energy and momentum. I do think the last minute could've been chopped off, since it essentially just repeats the chords over a non-soloed instrumental, but then those kinds of outros have their place. And it bizarrely reminds me of the outro of the Beatles' I Want You, at least in that repeated, doomy manner. It's a little jarring to have a song at the end that lasts over three times as long as the next longest. Though I guess Echoes (Pink Floyd) beat Germs to the punch there. Regardless: Shut Down (Annihilation Man) is no better or worse than the vast majority of songs here. Which is to say, it's pretty terrible. 1/5 Key tracks: Lexicon Devil, We Must Bleed
Classic punk
38 minutes of these goblin geezers warbling into their microphones thinking that they’re the shit. And this is coming from someone who likes some black metal. Germs has all of the redemptive qualities of a gas station bathroom, which is where you’ll find a lot of germs anyway. The only excuse this record has is someone decent guitar, but almost every rock record on this list so far has that so that’s not getting this nasal noise any higher on the list.
Its okay, its punk. Punk songs overall are short and sometimes leave me wanting more.
This wasn’t a total train wreck, but it was close.
Very strong punk. I like the energy and enjoyed listening - although I doubt I will listen again. I am not sure how to discern between different punk I have never heard before. 2.5/5
A punk milestone.
Good west coast punk
Honestly if I could put zero stars I would, this was aggressively bad (to me), I found it to be unbearable, feel free to skip
Another fun loud angry punk album.
i do not enjoy punk like this for the most part. the music, fine. the vocals, cannot do it. i can see how it was influential (1979?!), but it is not for me. that said, a few notes: - they all have stage names - pat smear, he's cool - "in 1976, smear and darby crash formed the germs with bassist lorna doom and drummer dottie danger (the pseudonym of belinda carlisle, who would go on to front the go-go's)" - joan jett produced this (it's produced?!)
p426. 1979. 1 star. Tedious US punk. Possibly influential, lots of energy but no songs or talent. Makes you realise just how good the The Sex Pistols were. On the plus side it's short, apart from the 9+ minute abomination of the last track.
I really loved this shit there was some awesome stuff. I saw the documentary that featured germs so I forever have a soft spot for them after watching that. The drumming on this album is superb. 3.5
Hmmm again. Not sure this is for me. I have so much trouble with these early punk albums where the recordings are clearly so inferior to the live product. So this one was a miss for me.
★½
Good album. Nice n noisy.
Oh boy, this wasn’t my thing. Look, I can appreciate the musicianship, it’s pretty clear that this is reputable punk music. But unfortunately it’s a genre that induces displeasure upon me.
Punk, melodisk, ganska aggressiv.
Classic punk. I think if I listened to it multiple times I might even be able to understand vast majority of it
Shut Down (Annihilation Man) almost made me turn off the album. Holy hell this punk music is obnoxious. Thankfully it was the last song.
I know OG punk is crucial to the current music I like, but man it's a struggle for me sometimes
Punky punk
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album I know one song How do I feel about this artist? I like the one song I know Pre-Listen Thoughts: I am not sure about this one. I like punk a lot but I am not sure about "hard-core" punk. That being said I love Lexicon Devil so we'll see if that is an outlier. This one could be anywhere from 2 to 4 stars. Favorite track(s): Lexicon Devil Post-Listen Thoughts: I didn’t hate it, but I don’t think this is my favorite form of punk. It was fine but if it was any longer I would’ve rated it lower. I just don’t think this style can sustain a longer album. But punk is short and sweet so that’s good.
While it's cool too hear an early punk album from the 70s, this is really not my thing
I bet this fucked in 1979. Still holds up imo, but nothing spectacular.
