Album Summary

Superfuzz Bigmuff is the debut EP and first major release by the Seattle grunge band Mudhoney. It was released on October 20, 1988 through record label Sub Pop. The album was later re-released in 1990 in the form of Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles. The album was named after two of the band's favorite guitar effects pedals: the Univox Super-Fuzz and the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, which helped to provide the band's signature "dirty" sound. The cover artwork is a photograph of frontman Mark Arm (left) and guitarist Steve Turner (right) performing live by photographer Charles Peterson. Other artwork on the album includes more photos of the band performing and them posing topless. Guitarist Turner also considered it to be Mudhoney's first official studio album, despite it being an EP initially. During initial release, the EP proved a success for Sub Pop, becoming one of the labels biggest selling early releases, alongside Nirvana's Bleach and Mudhoney's Debut LP. It has since been acknowledged as one of the seminal records of the Seattle scene. In mid-2008 the EP charted at #25 on the UK Indie Album Chart, a peak for the EP, twenty years after its release.

Right on! A real "classic" grunge sound that I love. Lotsa noisy guitars, gritty production style. No pop hooks here, which I honestly appreciate. Just a real nice document of a strong underground rock band in the post-hardcore years.

…grunge. I’m a sucker for grunge (I tried to say about their other one). This one is even better. So fuzzy!

That was very '90s and loud.

Seminal grunge band that this album captures at their early stage. They moved beyond this with Piece of Cake, The music is raw and sounds like side 2 of Black Flag’s My War.

Repetitive and boring...noise, noise, noise, I was so bored I fell asleep and then had to start the album over. Again, repetitive and boring....Listening to the first ten songs twice just added to the torture. I still don't understand how this is music....I guess they call it head-banging as then the listener knocks oneself out while listening. I wish the people who recommend listening to this group of 1001 albums before one dies would stick to single albums and not recommend deluxe editions until all other recommended albums were listened to as I would probably skip these albums that I don't get any enjoyment out of listening to and then I wouldn't feel like I had wasted my time. 32 songs ugh! and the last one is 14:19 long..double ugh!

Always think this is JSBX! and vice versa.

I liked this decently. The lead track, Touch Me I'm Sick, is pretty good. I also liked You Got It (Keep It Outta My Face). While this is not an instant favorite, I appreciated listening to it.

best album title so far

It started nice but after that went downhill...

They deliver on being super fuzzy and having a big muff big time. Great grunge record!

Best OK. Toffe ontdekking

Скучный ЕР который не имеет никакой художественной ценности кроме исторической важности быть первым в жанре гранж. Скучные треки, банальная подача. Напор и грязь ради напора и грязи.

I understand that this group and album has significance in music history as a foundational component to the grunge movement of Seattle rock. And much of that music - Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and derivations such as the Foo Fighters - have music that I enjoy immensely. But this album was a chore. First - two hours. I don't have enough angst for that. Second, it's just not good. Musically, lame. It has attitude, maybe a little humor. But I just can't relate. I will be fine if I never hear Mudhoney again in my life.

Reading the wiki, I wasn't excited about a grunge album, but I enjoyed the punk vibes from it. 2 1/4 hours is entirely too long for any album but I would check out some of their other stuff.

What if nirvana was worse?

Type of album that bleeds the songs together like links in a chain, to the point it's hard to tell the difference between them all. Not a bad thing but 2 hours of noise is a specific type of mood

This is the kind of album that makes it really obvious how much Mark Arm helped shape the punk side of grunge. You can also hear how much all those Seattle bands were influencing each other in the late 80s and early 90s. “Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More” could’ve been on Nirvana’s Bleach and I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about it. “Chain That Door” sounded like straight-up classic skate punk to me. Fast, dirty, loud, and exactly the kind of thing I would’ve loved as a teenager. Honestly, if I’d discovered Mudhoney back then, I probably would’ve played this album constantly for the simple reason that my parents would’ve hated it. A cool memory listening to this brought up was seeing Metallica do a brief cover version of “Touch Me I’m Sick” at their 2024 Seattle show. Lastly, This actually made me go back and listen to Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge again with fresh ears. I gave that album 2 stars a couple years ago, and now I’m wondering if I just wasn’t in the right mood for Mudhoney yet. This was exactly my kind of noisy, ugly rock. Favorite song: “Touch Me I’m Sick”

remember: the original EP was only from Need to In ‘n’ Out of Grace.

For listening I'd rate 2, extra star as clearly influenced Nirvana and In n Out Of Grace was great

Not for me

Big hair 80s rock. A bit much for me but not bad

Mudhoney's first release came out at the height of hair metal yet it sounds so quintessentially nineties. There is nothing particularly special about this. It is just a bunch of punk kids rocking out with a lot of energy and noise and they would have no idea how ahead of the curve they were. This release would certainly sell me on seeing them live if I was around when this came out. The sound of grunge didn't come out of nowhere and its roots can be traced back to this EP. If you like Nirvana, you would love this.

Grunge pas subtil, on se fait chier

Pas du tout ma came j'ai pas écouté jusqu'au bout

The first official grunge album with connections to Green River, Pearl Jam, The Melvins, and Nirvana? Yes, please. This is a no-brainer 5*.

Punk plutôt banal

Ridiculously fun album (technically an EP, I think maybe the only EP on the list?) This is one of the earliest entries in the grunge genre, so you can really hear the strong punk and metal roots coming through. I particularly liked how much the drums were clearly punk inspired. This album is super noisy, raw, and unrefined, pretty much everything I like from this form of rock music. The band doesn't quite have the distinct songwriting chops of a Nirvana or an Alice in Chains, but they have a solid ear for hooks and are willing to play with song structure in some interesting in fun ways. This is a good listen for those who are both interested in tracing the roots of grunge and for those who just want a really fun rock album.

Probably a 2.5, but generally not my vibe

Way better than I was expecting with the album title. Not too terribly long but just the right length, maybe I’ll give the extended edition a shot.

Ahh man, I did not click with this at all. Some of the riffs are good, but I really don't like the vocals.

No disfruto esta musica

Very solid album! More grunge than punk, more punk than grunge, not overwhelmingly either. Only wish it had a little more variety in melody, and maybe a stronger closing track than Halloween.

Some good grungey noise . Not my particular cup of tea but some decent tunes and I can appreciate the importance of this to the evolution of rock music.

A bit too much. Not horrible, though.

Very good

2+ hours for the extended version is not a vibe.

I like this record pretty good, which is weird, cause I got Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge a week or two ago and didn’t think much of it. But this has more of a low fi, punk rock energy to it. Or maybe the songs are just more interesting to me for some reason I wouldn’t be able to actually articulate. I dunno. But this is decent. 7.8/10

++: Mudride, No One Has, In 'n' Out of Grace +: Chain That Door +-: Need, If I Think 6,7/10

Definitely setting the stage for what was to come, will have to revisit

Unconventionally heavy guitars, hardcore energy, beflanneled lyrics and attitude make for a great, rough listen - but the most impressive part is how it presages so many other genres. There's everything in here, from early grunge to proto sludge and stoner.

Not my fav honey

Not for me

Really great sound album but maybe a little long. My favourites were Need, Mudride, Hate the Police, and Halloween. Need sounded like a lot of Nirvana songs that would come later and I thought it was great when the just started play I Wanna Be Your Dog at the end of Halloween.

This album sounds like what happens if you give AI all of the pre-2000s grunge and ask it to make an album.

Probably pretty fresh in the late 80s but doesn't hold up particularly well

My kind of stuff

Mudhoney describe their (guitar) sound very aptly as “Superfuzz Bigmuff,” and they were definitely ahead of their time - or far behind it, since, of course, these pedals had already been on the market for nearly 20 years by the time the Mudhoney album was released. In any case, I remember trying both of them out in the late ’90s and finding them (and thus the typical ’70s sound) too undifferentiated for my purposes. Be that as it may, Mudhoney apparently wanted that muddy sound that just didn’t fit in with the ’80s at all. And of course, they were pioneers of a movement that - three years later - didn’t actually begin with Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” but rather came to an end with it. Grunge was, after all, really just grunge before it went mainstream. But the real question is: is the album any good? And as with many groundbreaking albums, the answer is: it depends. If you like grunge, it’s one of perhaps a handful of records you absolutely have to know. If not, you won’t like Mudhoney either. So, in summary, it falls into the second-highest category.

Grunge: Nirvana, Pearl Jam y Mudhoney. Solo Mudhoney siguen como Ac/Dc haciendo lo mismo con esa maestría. NO incluye Touch Me I'm Sick, su proto himno. Espíritu de los Stooges en los 90. Un EP de apenas 30 minutos y una fuerza cegadora. Ruido mucho ruido.

'You're killing me & I'm killing you / You can't keep me from what I gotta do.' I went ahead & listened to the original six track 1988 EP, which does pack quite the punch. 23 mins of original grunge that works b/c it's emotional & heavy, especially the nearly 6-min 'Mudride,' which effectively delves into an almost VU-style dissonance, but Mudhoney are lighter, by which I mean they are lighter on their feet, than Nirvana, whose Bleach is a more hard-rock-inspired affair. Even when they're singing of the dirt & the mud, as all grunge acts are liable to do - 'Drag you thru the mud / Drag you thru the mud / Drag you thru the mud' - they do so w/ a dexterity & a freeness that the early Nirvana lacked. What they don't have, tho, is iconicity. Still dope.

Need 3.4 Chain That Door 3.4 Mudride 3.8 No One Has 3.7 If I Think 3.7 In 'n' Out of Grace 3.8 Score: 3.633333333

Despite the outrageous name is was pretty standard punk fare.

Even though I'm not a fan of Grunge music, I fully understand how influential Mudhoney was to starting the subgenre. This album, if nothing else, is important for that reason. With that being said, this album seems quite beta. As if this isn't the final product. It has one fun banger, and the other five tracks are forgettable. Favorite Track: "Mudride".

Maybe I was not in the mood for this. Very, “oh cool, you can make noise.”

Just like it's title this album is nonsense

Surprised at how good this was

Kopien er ofte bedre enn originalen.

This is what I thought punk music was. But grunge is just punkier punk I guess. It bounces off me. I don't hate it but I just don't have an interest in it.

idk pretty standard punk-rock ig

I’ve seen people wonder why Mudhoney wasn’t as lauded or popular as Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Truth of the matter it’s because their songwriting isn’t as good. The album is pretty decent, and has some good energy, but the meandering proggy portions of the tracks aren’t engaging enough to hold my focus.

Helt greit rockealbum. Ikke min favoritt

Fun early grunge and an easier listen but mostly background music to me. Didn't draw me in much.

Not a fan of his voice but otherwise pretty good.

Was ok. Found it a bit boring. Bit generic grunge.

The good bits here are good, just nirvana stole em all and did it better

Proper enjoyed this!

Heard people talk about Mudhoney, but never listened to em. You can see the obvious Nirvana comparisons. First notes of 3rd song sounded like it was gonna go straight into 'in Bloom' Bit more heavy and grufty Uses same film sample as Primal Scream Loaded Mudride v.good. Sounds like a sound itd be hard to recreate live Didnt hate it 3.5

When every generation had its music reset against the corporate bloat ( and subsequently taken over by the company machine), that don’t give a fuck almost DIY vibe; the early rockers, the Beatles and beat bands, 70s punk, the 80s indie ( when the word meant something) bands on both side of the Atlantic, this one was my youth. Been a long time since I heard Mudhoney, and brought back fond memories of looking out for all the sub pop, sst and other indie label imports, being the 1st to hear a new band worth hearing and taping it off whoever got what, happy days. Still as Fun and energetic as I fondly remember. How many other eps on here? Didn’t tire of the super deluxe 2hrs. Funny how many wives don’t seem to like it on here, when met my then to be future and still wife today in the 90s was still listening to this and she didn’t like this even back then. Yeah nostalgia score but A moment and a change, 4 Star

Pure Grunge 🖤 Tungt, beskidt, skramlet.

Pretty fun and on par with a lot of the other records from the burgeoning Seattle underground of the time (like Nirvana’s Bleach). It’s kind of crazy thinking about how these bands blend together to us now but must’ve stood out as electric and exciting in their heyday.

17. septembar 2026. 22.56h it was okej, lidurali nemam sta da kazem best: chain that door

ATTENTION TIDAL.USERS: The original release does not exist on Tidal as of September 2026. If you want to hear the album that was actually on the 1,001 list, you'll have to cobble together a playlist from Wikipedia's original track listing from the linked article or find it elsewhere. Quite enjoyable, this was. As a necessity, I added it to my personal collection, as I couldn't stream it. I think I'll leave it there too. It's astonishing to me this was 1988. I see why so many of the seminal bands of MY youth claimed this as a seminal band for theirs. ⭐⭐⭐.51

Punk with the fuzzy grunge guitars. I like the fuzzy guitars but hate the screaming out of tune vocals. I'm not a big punk fan either.

Favorite Track: Touch Me I'm Sick

Uninspired

I'm somewhat familiar with Mudhoney, and know a few of their songs, but I'm not sure I recognize any of these tracks by title. It's worth noting that I'm listening to the deluxe edition which is over 2 hours long. I appreciate the fact that this all feels like it's just about to fall apart. There's something special about these kinds of recordings. And obviously the way that this set the foundation for grunge makes it an important record. So maybe it's not the most consistent or pleasant listen, but there's definitely some magic in it, and it's culturally significant. It's hard to rate this, but I tend to reserve 3 stars for things that are just that middle-ground of not bad and not good. So although I'm giving it 4 stars, even I think that's a little high, but having only 5 stars to work with here limits my rating options.

mg el nirvana este

the debut ep of grunge band mudhoney. despite only being an ep release, the guitarist for the band refers to it as the band's first studio album. grunge fans like to refer to this record as the truest collection of newly-born grunge music ever recorded. it's not as big as other alt or grunge releases, but it's definitely treated as something significant among music circles. this album is one of the shortest listens on this list, it's six tracks and the runtime is only about 23 minutes. damn, it may be short but this record has a lot going for it! deep, dark, and shall i say... superfuzzy pre-90s grunge rock music, that's what we're dealing with tonight. while these songs may not totally match the cultural level of nirvana or alice in chains, this album is full of deeper cuts that would fit mighty well for a grunge spotify playlist that lacked variety. in a big world of grunge posers, if a fan started talking about this album, i would give them a firm handshake and say "you don't play around with this stuff. i like that." let it ride and vibrate around your eardrums, baby.

I grew up with the punk scene and then grunge came around and I enjoyed quite a lot of that as well. I don't know that Mudhoney is, in and of itself, a band I really like but I can hear every part of what I liked about grunge on this album forming up. With that in mind it isn't amazing in any one way. I think Dinosaur Jr. Is more up my alley on the whole.

Fantastic surprise. Didn't know anything about this band, never listened to this album before.

More notable for its influence than the strength of the songs or instrumental performances. Not any bad tunes here, though, just some more interesting than others

Ironically, the songs on the original release are worse than the ones on later releases I preferred this album to their other one here. Liked the guitar tone, sounded quite Nirvana-esque. High 3

This was weird but short enough that I didn’t really mind. Spotify having a two hour version is crazy though Playlist add: “No One Has”

Not for me.

Nothing too inspiring here. They have some energy and it's probably a great live show, but it's not doing anything I haven't heard a million times before.

Not bad - I enjoyed it, but I can tell you that it didn't make a huge impression on me overall. For a first EP/album, it would probably get me to listen to their other work at some point. But its not going to be in heavy rotation.

I liked this more than I thought and probably more then other Mudhoney that I have listened to…

Nirvana 0.1

Starts of really strong then quickly descends to awful dog shit. Punk like this is unnecessary to me especially when it rarely talks about nothing of substance or rebellion. Unless I’m missing something this is nonsense yelling loud album.

Average grungy stuff, but writing this review 2 days later I've already forgotten anything from this album which speaks to its lack of anything interesting.

3.5 Enjoyed this, not every song hits but most of them are pretty good
