Radiohead
2/5
Better than some of their stuff as I found a couple of tracks listenable, but overall the usual dirge.

The Stranglers

My favourite album of all time. I’ve probably listened to this record more than any other. It’s filled with fantastic songs end to end. I’m biased I know but definitely deserves its place on the list

MGMT
3/5
Not entirely what I was expecting from the cover image, but pleasantly surprised. The opening track is quite psychedelic, a theme that is maintained. However, this isn't your traditional 60's psychedelia, while it still gives a nod to the past, the sounds are still pretty much of the present utilising modern synths and production. In parts their sound is occassionally reminiscent of the Amorphorous Androgynous and Seeds of love era Tears for Fears also springs to mind, although there's definitely some 70's funkiness going on (Electric Feel) and "The Handshake" has a bit of a Sparks sort of fell to it. overall not an unpleasant album and I will give it a second listen. If there is one criticism is that there's not really out and out banger of a track. Overall 7/10
Miles Davis
5/5
I was already familiar with a number of albums by Miles Davis, but I hadn't heard this one before. In someways I'd say I was already a fan of his music even though I haven't heard everything by him, I'm glad to add this one to the list of the ones I have. I've listened to this album multiple times today and there is no doubt about its credentials for being included on the 1001 albums list. anyone with an interest in Miles Davis should give this a listen.
Cyndi Lauper
1/5
I remember the singles back in the 80’s. It’s not aged very well to be honest and wasn’t particularly my cup of tea back then. Sorry not an iconic album as far as I’m concerned and definitely not a must listen
The Kinks
4/5
Already an album my Collection. Definitely belongs on the list. A definite classic.
Rush
2/5
Rush are a band that I’ve never listened to and tbh I don’t see myself becoming a big fan. I’ve given it a couple of listens and it has grown on a little, so I’ll likely revisit it. However, not entirely convinced it’s a must hear album.
The Stone Roses
3/5
Rated by many people as a classic and certainly the band and this album were part of the zeitgeist of late 80's / 90's Manchester. It contains some notable tracks but I've always been a little bit irritated by obvious filler "Don't Stop" which is just "Waterfall" played backwards. It's managed to age pretty well since I first heard it and is definitely worth having a listen.
Nine Inch Nails
2/5
I've given this a few listens and although there are some aspects of this that I like, overall it doesn't really do it for me. Not one that's going on my list.
The Smiths
3/5
A band I have never really listened to much. I gave this album a number of listens over the space of the day and it grew on me each time. Whatever may be said of Misery, he has a great voice and Johnny Marr’s guitar work is fantastic. Overall, deserves to be on the list and a must listen to album by the Smiths
Eminem
3/5
Was quite surprised by this album. Not the sort of music that I would normally listen to but found it to be a worthy addition to the list.
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
Another artist I'm not very familiar with, beyond buying Mandinka on single release and her collaborations with Jah Wobble. Obviously I've heard the big hit from this album. I can't deny she had a unique voice, but musically I'm not sure she's my thing.
I did my customary thing of listening to it on my commute, so have given it a reasonable listen. Like I already noted above she was a unique vocal talent and that in itself has made listening to this album a pleasure. However, I don’t think that qualifies to make this album a classic. I did really enjoy her version of ‘I’m Stretched on your grave’, which was the standout track for me.
Kanye West
2/5
If I’m being honest, I’m not really a fan of rap music but I’ve always believed that any genre of music can produce something worthy of listening to. Sadly this isn’t one of those occasions. Perhaps my judgement is a little coloured by negativity surrounded by this artist, although I don’t know much about West apart from allegations of misogyny and violence. To its credit the production is slick and many of the tracks tuneful but then he starts rapping. I can appreciate that this is a form of poetry and there’s certain skill attached to its composition and performance, but as an ageing white man I can find no cultural connection to this apart froma sample of 21st Century Schizoid Man.
Nick Drake
3/5
He did some great music in his short time on the planet.
Steely Dan
3/5
A bit MOR for me but I gave it a few listens and it was quite nice to listen to. Not sure I’ll be adding it to my collection but I may revisit it on my streaming service
The Notorious B.I.G.
1/5
This is complete garbage. I can find no connection with this
Bob Dylan
3/5
Well I’ve listened to it 3 times today, I quite like it. I suspect had I heard it 10 years ago I would probably have hated it. I’m a firm believer in certain music happening for you at different times of your life. As someone pointed out to me, it’s now difficult to fully appreciate how ground breaking this album, Bringing it Back Home and Highway 61 revisited were at the time, but I’ve tried to keep that in mind while listening. I think it definitely belongs on the list
Paul Simon
1/5
#Daily1001Albums
I must confess this is yet another artist I'm not very familiar with. I’ve given it a listen a couple of times today and it’s done absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. The only other album I’ve heard by him besides this is Graceland, and this really doesn’t have a patch on that. Not an important album as far as I’m concerned
David Gray
1/5
I've listened to enough of this. Could be described as both radio friendly or coffee table music, but in both instances the word bland must also be applied as a prefix. I don't like his nasal whiney voice either. I know it sold bucket loads but there's clearly no accounting for taste. Definitely not an album you ever need to listen to and if you do it will be instantly forgettable. Has no place on this lis
George Harrison
3/5
Never, been a massive Beatles fan and by dent of that never really listened to the solo albums either. Having said that, I did lodge with a guy a number years agao who was mad keen on this, so although I've never purposely sat down and listened to this before much of it is familiar.
It’s a monumental album. Difficult to take in and appreciate in one day but I’ve heard enough to say this is a good album and probably deserving of being on the list. One track I like most at the moment is Wah Wah. I will endeavour to give it more listening time.
Cypress Hill
2/5
More Hip Hop / Rap being thrown my way. Another one that sold bucket loads of copies. What I’m hearing so far is quite interesting on the production side of things but I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable with the genre.
I listened to the full album and ultimately there wasn't really anything here to encouraged me to give it a second go. Couldn't really find any connection with it
Electric Light Orchestra
3/5
Actually had a copy of this back in the day but not listened to it for decades.
I enjoyed giving this a listen. I remember most of the tracks very well and it’s great pop music. Think it just about deserves to be on the list
Nirvana
4/5
#Daily1001Albums
I’ve not listened to this since the 90’s and wondered if it’s aged well.
Having given it a couple of listens today, I've found myself liking it more now than I did originally. Some banging tracks on there. Think it definitely has a place on the list
Fela Kuti
4/5
I do like Fela Kuti but I’d not heard this one before. Having listened to this a couple of times today, my verdict is absolute banger. Definitely well deserved place on the list.
Cat Stevens
4/5
One that’s in my vinyl collection but I’ve not listened to it for ages. I’d honestly forgotten how good this album is. I’ve really enjoyed listening to it today and must make a note of giving my vinyl copy a spin again soon.
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
She has an amazing voice and the musical backing is first rate. Like Night Hawks at The Dinner, this album has a real atmosphere. I quite like this. Definitely a good album
Dire Straits
3/5
Not a huge fan of these, but I shall give it a chance.
Having given it a fair listen it really doesn't do much for me. I can understand to an extent the popularity of this album. Mark Knopfler is a good guitarist and they had a couple of music videos that got a lot of rotation on MTV back in the day. Having said that, it's still not my cup of tea. It's got a very 80's sound that hasn't really aged well.
Air
3/5
Never really paid much attention to these when they arrived in the late 90's and only vaguely remember their hit single. Having given it a listen, it’s a nice sounding album and I do like a bit of electronica. I can understand its appeal but it’s a little too safe for me. I could see me enjoying it on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee but beyond that it’s not rocked my world.
Minor Threat
3/5
Definitely a banger this. Reminds me of lots of music I was listening to in the early 80's. Think I'll always have a soft spot for a bit of punk and certainly enjoyed this album. It's nice to see something like this on the list.
5/5
Having listened to this several times I can quite confidently declare this an absolute banger. I love the mixture of soul, funk, jazz and rock on this album. Definitely one of the most enjoyable albums to be randomly selected so far
Buck Owens
3/5
Country music, let’s see what we make of it. I’ve listened to this several times and quite enjoyed it. Some fantastic songs on here, not least the title track. Indeed, listening to it I was surprised to realise I’d heard many of the songs before, such as Streets of Laredo. Crammed full of Country classics
Billy Bragg
3/5
I found this a pleasant album, one I may revisit in the future
Herbie Hancock
4/5
I’ve listened to this album most of the day. Some great music here. A classic of musical fusion
Frank Ocean
2/5
I’d not heard this before and having listened to it, I doubt I’ll listen to it again
Adele
2/5
Not for me. I gave it a listen but I found it a bit meh
Throbbing Gristle
2/5
I know this band more by reputation than anything else. I gave it a listen and some interesting sounds going on but in the end it just seemed like a badly tuned radio. I'm sure that back in 1978 many people saw this as groundbreaking but I'm afraid that there's simply not enough going on here to maintain my interest.
Marvin Gaye
5/5
Classic. Such a beautiful album
Bad Company
4/5
Don’t know much about Bad Company, apart from the big track on this album, so again this will be a new experience. This album didn't disappoint. There was probably a time in my younger days that I'd have rejected this sound out of hand, but with advancing years I find I quite enjoy this classic 70's heavy rock sound. I can totally understand why this is on the list. Definitely a good album.
CHIC
4/5
Another Classic of its time. Grooves throughout the album. Gets it's place on the list
Derek & The Dominos
1/5
Lots of good playing going on, no doubt but the whole endeavour leaves me a little cold. It wasn't an hit at the time of original release and I'm not sure this is a classic in anyway. Pretty poor
The Rolling Stones
3/5
First time I’ve ever listened to this album all the way through, although many of the songs are familiar (they’ve been around so long, their material permeates western musical culture). As a collection it’s quite decent but perhaps not an outright classic
The Killers
3/5
Yet another band I’m not overly familiar with apart from their big hits ‘Somebody told me’ and ‘Norman Whiteside’ - both decent songs. This is a characteristic of the whole album in the main, good solid tunes and perhaps that’s also one of its weaknesses. While there’s a good standard of material, it never elevates beyond this. A good album but not a classic
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
I’ve listened to the album several times today and enjoyed it immensely. A well crafted pop record containing some superb songs.
Fleet Foxes
2/5
Not an unpleasant listening experience but as someone commented to me it’s basically a sound with no substance. So sounds good but not a classic
Black Flag
4/5
I’d forgotten all about this album. I had it taped for me. Not as earth shattering as the Dead Kennedy’s debut but it did leave an impression. Listening to it now I can hear much in common with other bands I listened to around this time, it seems very British Punk. Definitely one of the influential bands and albums of the Early 80’s punk scene
Elton John
3/5
There’s some real bangers on here and memories came flooding back. The good tracks are really good but the rest aren’t great, so a bit of a mixed bag for me. On the balance of tracks like Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, and the title track, it probably about swings it to get on the list. I mean how could I not give it the thumbs up when it contains a track called “Jamaica Jerk-Off”
Turbonegro
4/5
These were a total unknown to me, so I was listening without any expectations. It’s fair to say that I enjoyed listening to this. There’s everything there I like. The sound melds elements of the Damned, Motörhead, Hawkwind, touch of the Sparks, with various other flourishes of psychedelia, hard rock, punk and glam. One I’ll be adding this to my library
Iron Maiden
2/5
Gave this a blast. Never really been a fan but obviously knew their two banging hits from this album. I've tried to approach listening to this with the view of how it appeared back in the 80's when first released. This was one of those albums and sounds that carved out a new direction for rock music. There's elements of prog in there along side the heavy sound, so really quite ground breaking at the time. Having said that it still doesn't grip me, but Run to the Hills and Number of the Beast are massive tracks where their sound really works to its best effect. On the basis of those two tracks I'm going to say it's got it's place on the list.
Raekwon
2/5
I'm probably not doing this album justice, but this genre of music does very little for me. I've heard a lot worse than this and it's put together well enough for this style of music, just really not my thing.
Fiona Apple
2/5
I’d never heard of this artist before and it’s highly likely that I’ll never listen to them again. The music just didn’t draw me in and left no impact whatsoever
Otis Redding
3/5
Listening to this album isn’t an unpleasant experience and there’s no denying Otis’ vocal talent. The record is littered with great musical talent - Booker T and the MG’s were the backing band. Is it a classic, well it’s certainly good but the majority of tracks are covers, which helps rather than distracts from it being a classic. There’s no doubt this was in part of the albums crossover appeal and commercial success. In that sense it’s a classic album bringing soul to a wider audience. Not entirely my taste but I can see it’s importance in the history of popular music 🎶
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
Not too sure what I make of this. I can see the importance of this album in relation to the psychedelic movement in America in the 60's. I must confess I'd not really listened to them before this, just knew them by name and imagined them to be a little bit like the Grateful Dead, which is to an extent true. There's also a touch of the 13th Floor Elevators about them and possibly a smattering of the Doors. I imagine if I stuck with this a bit more I may devlop the same ambigious relationship with it as I do with the Grateful Dead (I'm not sure I like much of their stuff). If I'm being honest I much prefer the UK psychedelia sound to this but it's not without its merits and I enjoyed it more on the second listen. This would've been quite ground breaking at the time so it probably deserves its place on the list.
Sepultura
2/5
#Daily1001Albums
The shouty, gravelly vocals really aren't my thing. There’s lots of gnarly guitar mixed in with extreme guitar wankery. I enjoyed parts of it and in its context I can see why it’s seen as a classic. Ultimately, just not my thing
Deep Purple
3/5
This is a big rock album, not sure it's the best thing they ever did but it does contain Smoke On the Water, so for that alone it's a classic.
Ramones
3/5
Important early punk album. Some great tracks on her
The Pogues
3/5
It gets the thumbs up. With Fairytale of New York on it, it’s never gonna be anything other than a classic but loads of great tracks on there
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
Listening to this album wasn't a bad experience and Starship were one of the important bands of the Americam Psychedelic scene in the 60's, but beyond 'You Need Somebody to Love & "White Rabbit there's not much on offer here. Back in the day I'm sure this would've sounded ground breaking but it's not really well. A good album but not brilliant.
The Verve
3/5
Some great tacks on here and the album has grownin cult stature over the years.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Not listened to this since the 80's. I found if anything that with the passing of years I appreciated the music more. Stand out track is obviously 'Geno' but there's much to enjoy here.
The Jam
3/5
A band which has never done much for me. There's some not too bad tracks on this and it's not a bad album, just not for me
The Beta Band
3/5
Lots of people tell me this is a goof album and it's not unpleasant listening but just really didn't resonante with me.
Eminem
3/5
it’s probably up there with Slim Shady which surprisingly I liked. Having said that it’s pretty much the same, and this is the problem I have with hip hop and rap, everything is quite samey. I’m sure that other genres can be accused of being the same, I’m just not a big fan of this genre. It’s all a bit too produced for my liking and seems to have a cast of thousands, who helped put it together + plenty of guest artists. In the final equation I don’t totally dislike it but it just seems to be more of the same
Pink Floyd
3/5
Even though I’m very familiar with this album I’ve still given it a good listen. In many ways this is like the difficult second album, coming as it did after DSOTM. Having said that they still put in a good show and Rick Wright did some great keyboard work. Not their best album for me personally but still a very solid album and deserves its place on the list
Ananda Shankar
4/5
Great album. Really ground breaking sounds at the time. Definitely a classic
Bob Dylan
3/5
Bob Dylan is just one of those artists I don’t get along with. Having said that there’s two great tracks on here Subterranean Homesick Blues and Hey Mr Tambourine Man. Unfortunately there’s not much beyond those two songs that interest me
Jeff Buckley
2/5
Really not my cup of tea. Not terrible but not something I’ll listen to again
Steely Dan
3/5
A great sounding album. I do like the 70’s musical production on this and some great playing. This is the second album I’ve had chosen for me from the list and I’m starting to warm to Steely Dan
The Pogues
4/5
Stone cold classic. This is 'THE' album from the Pogues.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Not entirely to my taste but still some good tracks on here. Overall a good album but for me not a classic
Kate Bush
4/5
what can you say, apart from great album. Perhaps a bit of over enthusiasm for the fairlight, which dates it a little, so for me not her best. It’s still crammed with some fantastic tracks
The Beach Boys
4/5
Having given this album a couple of listens, I can say that I quite like it. Must admit that I know very little about their music, more about their sound. With respect to that this was something of a surprise, with quite a few different styles on the recording. I particularly liked the title track, which gave me pause for thought about some of XTC’s later out put. Gets the thumbs up from me
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Great album - total classic
The Afghan Whigs
2/5
Not entirely to my taste
Various Artists
4/5
Total classic - best ever Christmas album
Hole
3/5
Contains some decent tracks and certainly an important Album of its time. Overall not a bad record but not convinced it’s a classic
Elton John
4/5
I greatly enjoyed this album. Some great songs and performances
Arcade Fire
3/5
Not a terrible album but just didn’t do much for me
Beck
4/5
Brilliant album. Very groundbreaking at the time
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Great singer, great voice
The War On Drugs
2/5
Not unpleasant, I rarely find music unpleasant, but just a bit bland
Red Snapper
2/5
Not really satisfying
Taylor Swift
2/5
She’s just not my cup of tea
Lauryn Hill
3/5
She’s got a stunning voice but this let down by the pretty nondescript backing.
Television
4/5
Great Post Punk album. Definite classic
Joy Division
3/5
Not as good a Closer but shows the promise of what was to come. A little rough around the edges but has a certain power and atmosphere
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
3/5
Really pleasant album, great music and harmonies
Travis
3/5
Don’t think it will ever be my favourite album but contains a number of great songs
Blondie
3/5
Definitely a classic. Some top tunes on here
Frank Zappa
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I expected. Never been a huge fan of Zappa but this was quite good
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Some good tracks on here but must confess I’m not a huge fan of Led Zeppelin’s
Robert Wyatt
3/5
A interesting and slightly unusual album. I enjoyed this
Holger Czukay
4/5
Fantastic stuff. A true musical innovator
Nirvana
3/5
Iconic album. One of the first unplugged session on MTV, but not sure it necessarily makes it a classic even if it is a reasonably good album
The Monkees
3/5
Not a bad album but as someone pointed out to me you’d be as well placed to get a best of album by them
Snoop Dogg
3/5
Not bad for the genre. The obligatory’nigga’s’ and ‘muddafukkas’ are all there
Donovan
3/5
Some good hippy trippy folk from the British Dylan
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
A ground breaking album in the mid 70’s. People today are more familiar with different styles of music from around the world but back on its release this must’ve been mind blowing
Radiohead
2/5
They’re really not my cup of tea
Gil Scott-Heron
4/5
All I can say is Fantastic
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
I’m not entirely sure I get Neil Young but this was reasonably enjoyable
Kate Bush
4/5
A total original. Can’t fault her work
The Human League
4/5
Classic electronic pop music
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Ok but didn’t really do it for me as much as Miles Davis
Radiohead
2/5
This is better than the Bends but then he starts singing
Stephen Stills
3/5
It was pleasant enough but not Earth shattering
Neil Young
3/5
An artist I don’t entirely get. Not unpleasant to listen to but not blown away
Blur
3/5
I’d only ever heard the two opening singles on this, both good songs. The rest of the album doesn’t live up to the same standard. Overall not a bad album but not sure it’s a classic
The Rolling Stones
3/5
They definitely created a very bluesy sound on this album, which served Sympathy For the Devil well. The rest of the tracks were good but apart from its reputation I’m not sure if it’s a real classic
Q-Tip
2/5
Better than some of this genre but ultimately not for me
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Has its merits and certainly figured large for many
Nick Drake
4/5
Tragic artist but produced some fine material while he was with us
Machito
3/5
Not the type of music I listen to regularly, so I enjoyed this diversion
Dolly Parton
4/5
Some classic tracks, sung by the best around
Massive Attack
4/5
Another great album. They were very much a sound of their times but their material has aged well
Beck
3/5
Good album this. Probably the best one since Odelay
Queen
3/5
All the overblown pomposity that we know of Queen.Theatrical prog. Great musicianship but not entirely my taste
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
An enjoyable enough album but doesn’t have the high points of a ‘Gino’ or ‘Come on Eileen’, so it’s easy to see how Mr Rowlands star faded.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
A great talent with a fabulous voice. Album full of gritty and witty songs
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Always a good standard of song writing on his albums and no exception is made here. Not convinced this is his best work but a good collection of songs nevertheless
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Quite possibly their best album
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
Not a genre I’m keen on, so it was a struggle. Has all the mudda fukkas and niggas in there as you’d expect but also some interesting bits and bats in the backing tracks. I’m never going to be convinced it’s a classic but better than a lot of similar things from the genre
Metallica
3/5
Hard rocking album, some great tracks on here but not entirely to my personal taste.
Black Sabbath
3/5
Where it all started. A genre defining album
Elvis Costello
3/5
A song writer of some talent. There’s always a certain standard to his work but sometimes a little bit samey. Not his best but still good
Marty Robbins
3/5
Of its time, music romanticising the old Wild West. Quite popular with the generations that preceeded mine. Can't doubt he's got a good voice and the lyrics are well crafted as vignettes. The sort of music my late mother and her generation seemed to love
Caetano Veloso
2/5
Not my thing really
Leftfield
4/5
Great album and definitely one the influential releases of its time.
Adele
2/5
No doubting her voice but this just isn’t my thing
R.E.M.
4/5
The album that first attracted my attention to the band. Full of great songs, a definite classic
Tom Waits
3/5
Some great tracks on here and definitely a distinct voice and sound. Not sure this is, his best work but a good album nonetheless
Prince
3/5
Never listened to a whole album by him. There’s some good stuff on here without doubt but being a double there’s some things that are definitely filler. Wide range of styles explored which makes it interesting. Definitely worth a listen
Janelle Monáe
3/5
It’s quite interesting, clearly of a similar lineage to Parliament / Funkadelic. The concept brought to mind Mother Gongs Robot Woman trilogy, although musically very different. Indeed, quite broad range of styles on show. I quite enjoyed it and it was worth a listen
The Stranglers
5/5
My favourite album of all time. I’ve probably listened to this record more than any other. It’s filled with fantastic songs end to end. I’m biased I know but definitely deserves its place on the list
Joan Baez
2/5
I know many people like her but I just can’t get along with her histrionic warbling. Not my thing at all
Harry Nilsson
3/5
Some well crafted songs from a great singer - songwriter. Not all entirely to my taste but I can appreciate his talent
Charles Mingus
3/5
Some interesting stuff going on here and in part quite enjoyable.
Elis Regina
2/5
A mixture of Latin rhythms and MOR. Not really my thing
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
Probably should like this more and there is certainly some good guitar based power pop on show here. I just get the feeling that it’s all a bit contrived and they’re trying too hard
The Who
3/5
A few tracks on here that are ok, but not overly impressed. A band that flatters to deceive
Frank Sinatra
3/5
Some tracks work better than others but this would’ve been quite a thing at the time - long before Cassio keyboards had chance to annoy the hell out of us, bossa nova was a new thing. Frank rightly didn’t really explore it beyond this, which is a good thing
Van Halen
3/5
A bit dated now but quite enjoyable. Good fun
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2/5
Not a band I’m overly familiar with. It wasn’t bad but didn’t really leave much of an impression on me
The Smiths
3/5
There’s no doubt the Smiths were a force to be reckoned with in their day. Not as good as the Queen is Dead but still of a good standard
Fred Neil
4/5
Really enjoyed this. Some great tunes and a voice that reminds me of Bill Callahan
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Deserves to be considered a classic. Contains some of their best known songs.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Some great songs on this album but sounds a bit dated due to the extensive use of the Fairlight CMI
Meat Puppets
4/5
Excellent, first time I’ve listened to this group but think they could grow on me. Broad range of styles given a heavy guitar treatment. Really enjoyed this
Dead Kennedys
5/5
One of the true great Punk Rock debut albums. The best thing DK ever did
David Bowie
4/5
Not his best album but was the best thing he’d done for a long while. Poignant because of its time of release
Stereo MC's
3/5
Will forever remind of call centres. Not a bad album but it does sometimes feel like they reworked the same idea on a number of tracks
Primal Scream
4/5
One of those albums that caught the zeitgeist of its time. The bands Beggars Banquet in some respects but also featuring some of the electronic sensibilities of late 80’s / 90’s. Has a place on the list
Little Richard
4/5
Classic rock n roll fused with boogie woogie piano and a smattering of the blues, Little Richard was a definite musical pioneer
Ray Charles
3/5
He had a great voice but this is very much of its time and really didn’t appeal to me. It gets 3 stars just got his voice
Tom Waits
4/5
Total classic. I like this side of Tom Waits, more bluesy
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
4/5
Great album that produced 3 hit singles but is filled with good quality tracks
Pixies
4/5
My favourite Pixies album, the one that got me interested in their music
Serge Gainsbourg
2/5
Not a clue what he’s singing as I’m not fluent in French. Musically the backing is ok but the Lolitta like subject matter is a little dubious
Wire
3/5
I don’t dislike this album and I should probably like it more but it lacks any really memorable riffs or hooks. Still a good album
Common
1/5
Started off promising but deteriorated quickly. Low on the mudda fucka’s (although there’s ample use of the word fuck etc) but definitely big on the niggas. Also a bit of homophobia thrown in. Not my cup of tea
Elliott Smith
3/5
Found this quite enjoyable. At times it reminded me of Beck. Some good tunes on here
Röyksopp
3/5
A pleasant enough sounding album. However, nothing particularly groundbreaking on offer here
Cornershop
3/5
Enjoyed this. Remember the hit single but never heard the full album. Some good musical moments
Pink Floyd
4/5
Classic Floyd. Great concept but also not short of great songs too.
The Sugarcubes
4/5
Probably the first time I’ve ever listened to a full album by the band and I quite enjoyed their quirky take on Indie Pop. Something I’m may well revisit
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
3/5
I had to remind myself that such sounds were quite groundbreaking and white boy blues was a big thing.on the basis I can appreciate this although I must confess that I’m not a huge fan.
The Residents
3/5
I’ve heard stuff by them before but never this. They’re not a band I could listen to a lot but they are interesting and this album is no exception
The Black Crowes
2/5
Not bad in many ways but simply not my cup of tea
Dirty Projectors
3/5
Quite interesting, touches of pop and folk psychedelia, mixed up with Lo Fi indie experimentalism. Not sure this will make me a big fan but it was definitely worth a listen
Supergrass
4/5
Great album. Touches of psychedelia and garage about this. Received several plays and enjoyed listening to this a lot
John Lennon
3/5
Some part way decent songs on this and there’s no doubt he was an important artist but it’s not my cup of tea
Suede
3/5
A lot better than I anticipated. I'd not realised how like Bowie his vocals are. Some good stuff in general although writing the day after nothing much has stayed with me
Solomon Burke
3/5
Another one of those albums where I had to try and think of how ground breaking these sounds would’ve been. Guy has a fine voice and there’s some fine songs on here. Not entirely my thing
The Verve
3/5
Good rocking album
Nirvana
3/5
Not a bad album but not as good as Nevermind. More raw sounding showing that Pixies influence
Chicago
2/5
Not really my thing but not entirely a wasted listen. Interesting in parts
The Psychedelic Furs
2/5
Better than I expected but i still dislike the song Pretty in Pink and not a fan of his voice
Nick Drake
4/5
A fragile talent. Everything he produced was filled by melancholic magic
Incubus
2/5
Not really my thing
Iron Butterfly
4/5
Gets 4 stars just for the album title track. Other tracks are ok but the big track is why we’re here
Stan Getz
3/5
Probably not an album I’ll revisit but I did enjoy giving it a listen. There’s no doubting the quality of the musicianship
King Crimson
4/5
Fantastic album.
King Crimson
3/5
Another classic from KC
PJ Harvey
4/5
Great, gritty, grungy album. The combination of Polly Jean and Steve Albini really works
The Cure
4/5
One of their great albums.
Talking Heads
3/5
I quite enjoyed listening to this album but I do find Talking Heads to be one of those bands where I would be happy with either a anthology or best of album
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
A innovator of the electric guitar sound, Hendrix knock out some great tunes. Perhaps not his best album but still littered with ground breaking sounds
Van Morrison
3/5
I enjoyed this far more than I expected.
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
Better than some of the other Hip hop albums I’ve heard but still not my thing
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
A bit of a cult band from what I understand. Not unpleasant but not entirely my thing either
Willie Nelson
2/5
Bit too easy listening for me. There’s no doubt that Willie Nelson has done much better than this covers album, these don’t even approach being definitive versions
Neil Young
3/5
Not unpleasant but a bit middle of the road for me
Gang Starr
2/5
Better than a lot of others I’ve heard from this genre but still not for me.
Elbow
3/5
Lyrically it was very good so I can appreciate it on that level it musically not really my taste xxx
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
Not one that I was expecting to like but it’s crammed full of soul funk goodness
The White Stripes
3/5
Some banging trucks on here. Very enjoyable
Butthole Surfers
3/5
Weird and wonderful is all you can say about this
Living Colour
2/5
Meh
Dolly Parton
3/5
There’s no doubt of her talent and there are 2 or 3 really well crafted songs on here
Super Furry Animals
4/5
Really enjoyed this album. It’s now in my music library and one shall revist
Elvis Costello
3/5
Great debut
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Good electronic pop music but sounds pretty much like everything else they’ve ever done. Not bad but not earth shattering
Sam Cooke
3/5
A good live performance by one of the greats of soul
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Definitely an important album , I just don’t find MBV as satisfying as Slowdive
The Electric Prunes
4/5
Great bit of psychedelia
Bob Dylan
4/5
Supergrass
4/5
Sex Pistols
4/5
Classic of its time. Rotten’s snarling vocals, Jone’s distinctive guitar licks and Cook’s solid drumming (we won’t mention the bass lol) produced one of the great debut albums of the 70’s. Still sounds fresh today
The Prodigy
4/5
Total banger, including two of their most iconic tracks
4/5
Maybe not the most original band in the world but this album does contain some well crafted pop / rock songs
M.I.A.
3/5
I like the concept of this album more than the actual music.
Beth Orton
3/5
She’s got a good voice and it’s all nicely arranged, with good musicianship. Just not my cup of tea
Radiohead
2/5
Better than some of their stuff as I found a couple of tracks listenable, but overall the usual dirge.
Guns N' Roses
3/5
Never really keen on these, mainly it’s the vocals I don’t like. Have said that, I did find it musically better than I anticipated
Jeff Beck
3/5
Some good musicianship and notable vocals from Rod Stewart. Not entirely sure it’s a classic
The Crusaders
3/5
Cracking opening track. The rest sounds a bit dated but still has some nice touches of jazz, funk and soul. Not a bad album but not really very original
Amy Winehouse
3/5
She had a great voice and could’ve sung the football results and it would still be an hit
Radiohead
2/5
Just not a fan of their music
R.E.M.
3/5
I listened to this several times, simply because I liked how it sounded. There in lies the downside of this album, it sounds terrific but non of the songs are particularly rememberable.
Louis Prima
4/5
Certainly was the Wildest. The one and only King of the Swingers
Beyoncé
2/5
Not my thing at all. Very difficult to even rate her voice as the album is very produced
Def Leppard
3/5
Great 80’s hair rock
Billy Bragg
3/5
I don’t dislike Mr Bragg but his work can be a little samey
Elvis Presley
3/5
The man didn’t have a bad voice and was an influential performer. Not so much a creative force
The Last Shadow Puppets
4/5
Great 60’s pastiche. Called to mind Scott Walker amongst others. An album I’m seriously thinking of adding to my collection
Korn
3/5
Better than I anticipated. Some similarities with Killing Joke but became quite samey as the album wore on
Pretenders
3/5
First time I’ve listened to this album alway through, although I was familiar with all the singles from it. A lot harder rocking than I thought it would be. Not really punk but you can see her associations with members of the Pistols May have rubbed off on her
Air
3/5
Sunny Sunday morning music best served with a good quality filter coffee
a-ha
3/5
80’s pop perfection. I knew all the hits from this already and who could forget that video.
Fugazi
2/5
Didn’t really do it for me. Just something not very satisfying about the sound
Green Day
3/5
Some good moments on this but not really my cup of tea. I get the feeling that they were trying too hard to be radical
Big Black
4/5
Punk classic, nothing further needs to be added
4/5
Rockin, punky tunes
Elliott Smith
4/5
Quite an eclectic mix of sounds. I found this to be an interesting and enjoyable listen
Duran Duran
3/5
Good 80’s pop - rock
John Cale
3/5
Not particularly my thing. Probably an album that requires more than one listen
Neu!
4/5
Metronomic beats and ambience abound on this Krautrock classic. Neu had some good moments but it can be a bit samey after awhile
The Stooges
3/5
Raw power, is pretty all you need to say
Soul II Soul
4/5
Classic of its time and still sounds relevant today. Cuts some mean grooves
Beastie Boys
3/5
Better than a lot from this genre but not really my thing
David Bowie
3/5
Not an entirely bad album but far from the best he’s ever done
Iron Maiden
3/5
Rockin
Nanci Griffith
3/5
I’m not big on country but most genres usually produce something of worth, Nanci Griffith is one of the artist certainly produces the goods here.
The Beach Boys
3/5
Not sure I really get the BB’s
Coldplay
3/5
Not as bad as i thought it would be but still rather beige
Aerosmith
3/5
Not really my cup of tea but had some decent rock tracks on there
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Definite classic - the Blacksploitation soundtrack. Total funk
Rush
3/5
Musically very good. Rocking with spacey synths but I’ve never been able to get along with the vocals
Pulp
4/5
Great album. Can hear Bowie and other various influences on this but no bad thing
Tori Amos
3/5
Found this quite good. Some touches of Kate Bush about the vocals and songs.
Common
3/5
More musical than a lot of this genre. Closer to Gil Scott Heron than Dr Dre
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Total classic. One of those albums where every track is a winner, showcasing the broad talent within the band
N.E.R.D
4/5
Didn’t know these until this album was selected. Pleasantly surprised by what I heard here. One I’ve added to my
4/5
Far from XTC’s best but littered with many great tunes nevertheless
Stevie Wonder
4/5
For an album and artist describe as soul there’s much more going on here. There’s synth experimentation, touches of rock, jazz and funk all fused together on this LP. Rightfully seen as one of his best albums
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
A pleasant listen. Not entirely my thing but some great pieces of music on here. Probably an album that would grow on me with repeated lidtens
808 State
2/5
Sounds a bit dated now and there are definitely better electronic groups out there
TLC
2/5
Only got halfway through this. Really bad, hip hop type rap, trying to be pop. Pretty poor not a clue how this made the list
The Clash
4/5
A great debut album. One of the essentials from the first wave of British Punk bands
Rage Against The Machine
3/5
Classic of its time
The Divine Comedy
3/5
A band I’ve always thought I could / should like, sadly they never quite get me there. I can’t say this was a bad album but it didn’t quite hit spot either.
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
A lot of Funk going on here but not the best the genre I’ve heard. Still a solid album
The Magnetic Fields
3/5
With an album with such a length and containing so many songs, it’s difficult to fully assess this recording. Indeed, it’s a bit of an ask to listen to it in one sitting. However, one thing that comes across is that there’s a wide variance in quality. Nothing particularly bad on the album, all the songs have a certain quality but some are definitely better than others.
Nightmares On Wax
4/5
Cool grooves, cut by the master of trip hop. It is indeed a delight for Smokers and others
Solange
3/5
Overall not a bad album. Good production and she has a great voice. No really outstanding individual tracks but works well as a collection
The Temptations
3/5
A truly soulful and funky album
Thundercat
3/5
Not entirely sure about this album. Some nice touches of soul and funk, which I usually like but it didn’t quite tick the box for some reason
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Total classic. Beautiful music and words
David Bowie
5/5
Part of his Berlin trilogy and arguably this and Low are some of his best work. Full of electronic experimentation and the unforgettable title track. Classic
Red Hot Chili Peppers
2/5
Apart from the well known songs nothing to commend this and I’m not even sure about those
3/5
Awful but strangely compelling
Thelonious Monk
3/5
Enjoyable in parts. Monk was an inspiration to many jazz musicians who I like but sometimes his arrangements are a little bit showy and over complex
Dire Straits
3/5
Enjoyed this much more than I expected. Nice bluesy sort of album
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Great overblown, heavy rock. Contains some of their classic tracks. Definitely one of the outstanding albums of its time and of the rock genre
John Coltrane
3/5
Good solid bit of jazz. Probably needs more than one listen to fully appreciate it but my initial listen was pleasant enough
Pink Floyd
5/5
There’s probably nothing I can say that hasn’t been said. The pinnacle of their creativity post Barrett, it’s the a masterpiece from start to finish.
4/5
Great album containing some of their quirkiest and best known tunes
Public Enemy
2/5
Many people have tried to persuade me this is essential, personally I’m not convinced. Rap / Hip - Hop doesn’t resonate with me. I can get there’s a creativity to it and get that things like this have a certain political stance but the end product just doesn’t move me
CHIC
3/5
Although, seen mainly as disco, this album is nevertheless loaded with funk and soul goodness
Queen
3/5
Overblown, dramatic, everything you’d expect from Freddi
Depeche Mode
4/5
Really enjoyed listening to this album. Outside of their first, I’ve not ever listened to a full LP by them, so this was a pleasant surprise. I could imagine myself growing to like both the band and this album much more if I gave it more attention
The Go-Go's
3/5
Very enjoyable, post punk pop. Contains some great songs
The Who
3/5
No doubt that this was the band at the height of their powers. One of the great live albums
Linkin Park
3/5
Not really my thing. Not bad as such just not my taste
Black Sabbath
4/5
Absolute classic. Heavy rock at its bedt
Paul Simon
4/5
Classic 80’s release. Some of the production dates it a little but it’s crammed full of great pop songs, so this can be easily overlooked
Gorillaz
4/5
A good album this. Get 4 stars just for the Clint Eastwood track
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
Not unpleasant but pretty much background music. Standout track ‘So Nice’, doesn’t really shake you and grab your attention, it’s that sort of album. The thing that surprises me most is that anyone found it memorable enough to include on this list
Dwight Yoakam
2/5
Not a big fan of country music and this doesn’t persuade me otherwise
The Doors
4/5
A little bit biased as the Doors are on of my favourite bands. This album is full of their own brand of bluesy rock and can’t think of a bad track on it
Lou Reed
4/5
Fabulous album containing some of his best known songs. The album struck me on listening to have a similar sound to some of Bowie’s early work, no bad thing and evidence I suspect of Reeds influence
Ice Cube
3/5
A lot better than many of others of this genre, included on the list. Quite a bit of musicality involved but still littered with the obligatory mutha fuckers and Niggas
OutKast
3/5
Another hip hop album that was quite tuneful. Some nice grooves on this although personally I don’t think I’ll ever fully get my head around the genre
Pearl Jam
3/5
A lot better than I anticipated but something about the overall sound just doesn’t sit right with me
Leonard Cohen
4/5
A fitting end to an illustrious career. There’s an atmosphere of poignancy that seems to run through this album
Beastie Boys
3/5
Quite revolutionary in its time, I was never a big fan and this continues to be the case
Moby
2/5
Expertly used digital tech to produce well crafted blandness
The Who
3/5
A pretty solid album in many senses but only really has the one stand out track, Won’t Get Fooled Again
3/5
It’s difficult to listen to this without thinking about what first class tw*t Bongo is, but there are some decent pop songs on here. Bullet in a Bluesky is probably the best.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I get there’s some great music going on but I’m not sure I get the Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
While I like the fella’s politics, I’m not sure about his music. The title track still grates on me and sounds awfully 80’s
Ice Cube
2/5
Quite tuneful for the genre, but I still struggle with rap / hip hop. The obligatory N*ggas, mutha f*clerks are here in plenty, embellished with a liberal smattering of b*tches. I find it all pretty difficult to relate to
ZZ Top
3/5
Bit of 80’s AOR rock, quite enjoyable. Good driving music, gave this a listen on the way to work in the car
4/5
Perhaps not their best album but certainly iconic. It contains a number of their best known songs and there’s no doubting its place on the list
The National
1/5
Beige music. Absolutely terrible
Taylor Swift
1/5
I’m sure she a nice young woman and certainly appreciated by the Swifties but personally I found this awful
Lana Del Rey
2/5
Beige music. Absolutely terrible
Fats Domino
4/5
So much of rock n roll and later music owe a debt of thanks to musicians like Fats
PJ Harvey
3/5
PJ Harvey is one of those artists that I like quite a lot of their stuff. However, over an album I’ll maybe only like 40-50% of the tracks. The same is true for this offering
David Bowie
4/5
The title track largely prefigures Bowie’s next move, where he took on board much of the influences coming out of Germany, while Golden years stays pretty much with the funk of his previous effort. A bit of a transitional album, that still produces some good moments
The Isley Brothers
3/5
A lot funkier than I was expecting. Not bad but did totally rock my world either. Worth
A listen at least
The Blue Nile
2/5
Some elements on this perhaps I should like, such as some nice sequenced synth but over al I found it pretty awful
T. Rex
4/5
Glam at its best. Groovy, bluesy riffing abounds
Foo Fighters
3/5
Perhaps not surprising as it was recorded in the wake of Cobain’s death, this sounds pretty much like Nirvana. Some pretty good punk / grunge tracks on here. Not entirely my thing but it rocks enough to get a thumbs up from me
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Great album with two of her greatest songs on it - Fast Cars and Revolutions. The arrangements are simple but effective and Chapman has a great voice
Fiona Apple
3/5
The opening track reminds me a little of Billie Nomates, which suggests she’s definitely been an influence. By the same token I can hear touches of Kate Bush on ‘Never is a Promise’, which is the standout track for me. Not a bad album but not outstanding
UB40
4/5
Great debut album. Sadly they didn’t live up to their potential but this is a cracking album nevertheless
Carole King
4/5
Outstanding album. The arrangement, backings and vocals are all top drawer. Rightly seen as a classic release
Can
4/5
A very important album and a great influence on much later music. Some great funky grooves on this as well experimentation, all underpinned by the motoromic drumming of Jaki Leibzeit
Van Halen
3/5
Sounds very formulaic but worth remembering Van Helen were one of the bands that created the formula. Enjoyable enough bit of Heavy Metal fluff
Fairport Convention
3/5
I’m not really familiar with their work and think this was the first time I’ve listened to this album all the way through. I found it very enjoyable and may listen further
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
There’s no doubt that Joplin had a great voice and there’s some great musicianship on here. Indeed it’s difficult to remember what groundbreaking sounds were being made in the 60’s, on that alone the album deserves its place on the list
Cocteau Twins
4/5
Ethereal, atmospheric, everything you expect from the Cocteau’s
3/5
Always liked Jon Anderson’s vocals and this album showcases it well. Good musicianship but a little overindulgent. Not as bad as I remember it tbh
Jethro Tull
3/5
A lot better than I expected but the 3 blind mice style flute playing still bothers me
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
Angular, distorted guitars abound. Nothing individually stood out for me as an out and out banger but probably worth another listen. Overall a pretty good sounding album
Bee Gees
3/5
Quite well crafted pop music. Didn’t dislike it but it did rock my world either
N.W.A.
3/5
One of the albums that influenced the proliferation of Mutha Fuckas & Niggas - I generally don’t like the rap genre but I enjoyed this more than most
AC/DC
4/5
Absolute banger. Most bands would fold after losing their lead vocalist, AC/DC came back with this
Gene Clark
3/5
Definite touches of Dylan about this. There were one or two songs I quite liked, For a Spanish Guitar probably being my favourite as it’s stuck in my mind more than others. Find it remarkable that an album that was such a resounding commercial failure found its way onto the list
Bad Brains
3/5
Pretty hard edged punk. I liked som of the energy in this but it lacks some of the melody that is present in the first wave of British punk that I prefer
The xx
2/5
Like a minimalist cross between the Cure and Coldplay but less interesting
Small Faces
5/5
Classic album. Certainly one that deserves to be on the list. Some great tunes on here and the side two concept narrated by Stanley Unwin was s priceless
Gene Clark
3/5
Touches of country in places on this offering. Like the other album of his on the list it wasn’t a hit at the time of release but this is much better and more atmospheric. Not sure it’s a classic though.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
I know Nick Cave’s work has been critically acclaimed but this does nothing for me. I am aware that the albums concept was based on a Rea life tragedy but it all seems a bit self indulgent
The Specials
4/5
Mixture of punk attitude and ska grooves. It still holds up well today
Morrissey
3/5
Not ever been a fan of The Smiths or Misery, so I’d never heard this album before. I’ve got to say I thought it was a pretty good album
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
Bit more relatable than the more gangsta stuff and quite whitty in places but this genre is definitely not for me
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
Not a bad album in some ways and enjoyed some tracks but really don’t get the RHCP
Orbital
3/5
Pleasant electronica
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Banger of an album. Great cover of the Cure Just like Heaven
Mercury Rev
4/5
A strange mixture of the Bestlesque, glam and touches of Spaceman 3
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Classic rocking album
Steely Dan
3/5
Not unpleasant, touches of jazz and blues in a few tracks. Didn’t really rock my world though
Frank Sinatra
4/5
Velvet smooth vocals, and definitely one of his best collections. Ideal Sunday morning music
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
Listenable enough, their harmonies are always good and just the thing for an early morning listen.
Marilyn Manson
3/5
The most commendable thing about him is that he has a manatee in his swimming pool.
Echo And The Bunnymen
4/5
Cracking album from start to finish, with two great singles from it
Randy Newman
3/5
I get he’s supposed to be quite humorous and I may get that more if I listened more but everything he does just sounds samey. Not a huge fan
Fela Kuti
5/5
Total classic, Fela Kuti creates a groove like no other
Sparks
4/5
Great album, including two great singles, but the record is littered with fantastic pop songs
Peter Frampton
3/5
Not an artist who I’ve never listened to prior to this album. I can appreciate the musicianship and there are a few not bad songs on here but it’s all a bit too mainstream for my tastes
B.B. King
3/5
Very much of its time. No doubts that he was a great player but not entirely my cup of tea
Depeche Mode
4/5
Dark, brooding, electronic pop. Some fine tracks on here. Quite possibly their best album
The Adverts
3/5
High energy Punk from the second wave of British Punk. Sadly lacks some of the killer anthems of the first wave. Stand out tracks Gary Gilmour's Eyes and Bored Teenagers
Alice Cooper
3/5
The over the top, flamboyant showman comes over on this album that’s for sure. Do I like it? Well, yes and no. It’s ok in places but overall it’s not really my thing
The Cure
4/5
One of their 3 great albums. 100 Years has always been a firm favourite
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
Great jazz performance
Dion
3/5
Rock n Roll
Parliament
4/5
The full funk here, totally funktastic
The Auteurs
3/5
A band I’d heard of but never listened to. Pleasantly surprised and will give them another listen
Rufus Wainwright
2/5
This album is pretty shit. I’m not sure how it even made it onto to the list.
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
Green Onions classic track and classic album from the Stax Records backing band
Dr. Dre
1/5
The obligatory Niggas, Mutha fuckers and bietchas. Definitely not my thing
Abdullah Ibrahim
2/5
Only listened to part of this. Didn’t particularly inspire
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Pleasant enough but I wasn’t overly impressed. Having said that I did give it two listens so there must be something there.
Iggy Pop
4/5
An album very much influenced by collaboration with Bowie, with a number of tracks you can imagine being sung by him. Still it contains the standouts of the title track and the passenger, which push this to a 4 star rating
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Great funky, soulful album
Method Man
2/5
Low on the mutha fuckers, niggas (although they are there) which makes a change, and some interesting bits of backing tracks, but I still struggle with this genre.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
4/5
Bluesy, theatrical, rock. What’s not to like
Bob Dylan
3/5
I’ve never been a Dylan fan but doing 1001 albums have given me a greater appreciation of his work. Some tunes on this i recognised and some I didn’t, but I did enjoy listening to it all
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Classic rock. Hendrix set a whole new level with his playing. Great album
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Probably the best album I’ve personally heard by the duo
The White Stripes
3/5
Banger of an album
The Youngbloods
4/5
Really enjoyed this. Touches of the Doors in places.
William Orbit
4/5
One of those albums from the 90’s that seemed to be everywhere. Some nice bits of electronica and ambience, with the obligatory samples which were in vogue at the time
Michael Jackson
3/5
Listening to this I recalled what a big album it was in the 80’s . It contains a lot of well known songs by Jackson, largely due to the fact about half were released as singles. It definitely had the kitchen sink thrown at it regarding the latest technology in the 80’s, which perhaps explains is success at the time, but also makes it sound dated now
Sade
3/5
I think everyone knows ‘Smooth operator’, the stand out song of her career but there’s plenty more of the same jazz infused soul here. Definitely a niche sort of sound. A favourite I imagine of coffee houses, late nights / early mornings
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
A band that I don’t think I’ve ever really understood. They’ve done the odd track here and there that has been ok but generally they don’t appeal to me. I can’t say this is a bad album and it includes some decent guitar based songs, just not my thing
The Beta Band
3/5
Not an unpleasant mix of electronics and rock but nothing particularly stood out for me
Isaac Hayes
4/5
A interesting album, from his own take on walk on by to the mammoth By the Time I Get To Phoenix, this album is full of surprises. Not what was expecting but enjoyed it nevertheless
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
A musician that doesn’t particularly inspire me. I can’t say that it’s bad and he seems a decent bloke so it get 3stars
Beatles
4/5
For me perhaps their best album. Classic tracks such as Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows, not to mention Tax Man litter the album.. don’t think there’s a bad track on here
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
Unusual album. One that’s been in my collection for many years. It’s a interesting collaboration that never really fulfils its promise
The White Stripes
3/5
Bluesy, rocking , punky sound. Everything you’d expect from the WS’
Beatles
4/5
Another belter from the Beatles. Perhaps not quite as good as Revolver but still a great album
Violent Femmes
3/5
Pretty solid album which I should probably give another listen. Probably deserves a higher score than I’ve given it
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
Solid enough rock with some good riffing grooves but just a bit MOR for me
Beach House
3/5
Pleasant enough but I’ve heard this sound done much better
Shivkumar Sharma
4/5
Classical Indian music was new to western ears back when this was released. It proved highly influential on many musicians and helped introduce a different palette to western music
1/5
An experiment in cacophony that succeeds
Billy Joel
3/5
Not entirely to my taste although I must confess I enjoyed most of it. Credit where it’s due, Billy Joel knows how to craft a pop song
Leonard Cohen
4/5
A classic album from Laughing Lenny. Keyboard heavy on this one but the gravelly voice and the subtle emotive lyrics are what we’re here for. An album that rewards repeated listens
Hüsker Dü
3/5
Quite a pleasing listen. Knew little about the band before this but they do remind me a little of REM. Enjoyable power pop / rock
Metallica
3/5
The classic Metallica sound is all there just not the songs. It’s all a bit samey really and not near their pinnacle, Master of Puppets
Paul Simon
4/5
I quite enjoyed this. Quite a few different styles used with some quite catchy tunes and lyrics
Joe Ely
3/5
Not a big fan of Country but there are one or two decent moments on this.
Nina Simone
3/5
Such a tremendous voice
The Smiths
3/5
I’ve never been a Smiths fan, so all the albums included on this list are pretty much new to me. On that bass I’ve got to say this one has been the least appealing so far
Buffalo Springfield
4/5
I was quite surprised by this. Never heard any Buffalo Springfield before and I enjoyed quite a bit of it. Loved the touches of psychedelia on the album, particularly the opening track
ABBA
3/5
Not really a fan but the popularity of their hits can’t be denied. Some of their better known songs are included on this album, all of which are easy to sing along to
The Zombies
3/5
Quite a pleasing listening experience. Nice psychedelic touches and I could hear where influences on UK indie bands has come from
Burning Spear
4/5
Total classic. I’ve had this album for years and never get tired of listening to it. Marcus Garvey, Slavery Days and Old Marcus Garvey are standout tracks
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
I don’t usually mind world music but this didn’t really resonate with me. Still enjoyable in part but not on par with Fela Kuti
The Cult
3/5
Like an hybrid between Led Zeppelin and AC/DC and possibly every heavy rock band you’ve ever heard. Not particularly original but reasonably effective
Happy Mondays
4/5
One of the albums that captured the zeitgeist of the Madchester scene. Some great tracks on here which are probably more accessible than previous albums. Not my personal favourite but I enjoyed revisiting this album
The B-52's
4/5
Retro futurism at its best - great album including two of their biggest bangers, Planet Claire and Rock Lobsters
X-Ray Spex
4/5
Classic Punk album. Contains some absolute bangers. Sad that their output was so minimal because their form of high energy Punk was very palatable
The The
2/5
I’ve never really got the appeal of this band. One or two decent songs but generally overrated
Erykah Badu
3/5
Some good grooves on here. Reminded me a bit of Soul ll Soul in places. Lots of collaborations, notably with Isaac Hayes. Worth a listen
Roxy Music
4/5
It’s been a long while since I last heard this album and I had forgotten how good it is. They were definitely a different creature with Eno in the band and his synths punctuate some pretty good left field art rock. A pretty innovative and influential album
The Mothers Of Invention
2/5
Not my cup of tea. Odd bits are of it appeal but I dislike the majority of this
The Gun Club
3/5
Quite enjoyed this. Reminded me a little bit of the Fall. May well check out some more of their work.
R.E.M.
4/5
A good album this and includes one of my favourite track by them, Orange Crush, so what’s not to like
Scritti Politti
3/5
Some bits of this weren’t bad, particularly the opening track but sadly it went downhill from there. It all sounded very 80’s and dated possibly because of the over reliance of technology to make the music
Arrested Development
3/5
Not my favourite genre but this had some surprisingly good grooves on it
The La's
3/5
Not a bad album, quite competent but outside of the one standout track, infinitely forgettable
Cream
3/5
Lots of psychedelic overtones, one of the great power trios, I can almost forgive that Clapton is in the line up, but not quite
Gang Of Four
3/5
Some good alternative/ post punk grooves, with interesting lyrics. However, very much of its time and I did feel it sounded a bit dated
Gary Numan
4/5
One his three best albums. Always thought it would have been better with some guitar on it but still a good listen
Aimee Mann
2/5
Just didn’t speak to me. Bit too mainstream and wasn’t keen on her boice
The Dandy Warhols
4/5
A good sounding record but a little one dimensional. A bit like meringue, tastes nice but has little substance
The Boo Radleys
3/5
A decent album, enjoyed some of the psychedelic touches on a few of the tracks
50 Cent
2/5
I don’t think I’ll ever love this genre. This one is noticeably better than many but still high on the mudda fukka and nigga count. Not really my bag
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
An artist I really just don’t get. I’ve heard similar done better by Tom Waits. Not a bad record but one that just doesn’t float my boat
Circle Jerks
3/5
Short but sweet, one of fastest albums ever
Coldplay
2/5
Meh
Lambchop
2/5
Bit over produced was my feel and a little bit bland. The country tinged parts are better done by artists such as Bill Callahan. Not really a fan of this
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
A couple of tracks reminded of OMD but beyond that wasn’t particularly taken by this
Wild Beasts
3/5
A pleasant enough listen but couldn’t get past the feeling that they’re trying to be too clever
The Style Council
4/5
Fond memories of this album and a carefree summer of 84. I’d forgotten how good it was and why I liked it so much at the time. Lots of jazzy guitar and soulful vocals, producing some cool laidback grooves
