Album Summary
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (number 2 R&B charts, number 4 Pop charts) and the title track (number 5 R&B, number 8 Pop). Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.Super Fly, along with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On (1971), was one of the pioneering soul concept albums, with its then-unique socially aware lyrics about poverty and drug abuse making the album stand out. The film and the soundtrack may be perceived as dissonant, since the film holds rather ambiguous views on drug dealers, whereas Curtis Mayfield's position is far more critical. Like What's Going On, the album was a surprise hit that record executives felt had little chance at significant sales. Due to its success, Mayfield was tapped for several film soundtracks over the course of the decade.

This album was decent and I can see how it would have been popular in the soul/funk genre in the early 70s. Curtis is a pretty good singer and the music flows well through most songs. I gave it a solid 6/10, so 3 stars it what it gets.
Smooth and satisfying, sort of a kindred sound to "What's Going On", fits in as a soul classic of the era. But extra funky. Richly interesting and full of different yet lush songs
3/5 - Would listen to again. Some decent tracks on here. Nice for background music but not nothing screaming out to me. Pusherman and Freddie's Dead are some of my favourites. Superfly is good too.
Best Blaxploitation album......milestone
Nice background music, not too overpowering
I have not seen this film. Rating a record that was meant originally as a soundtrack is a tricky thing. Obviously I expect some of the tracks to be of sporadic lengths, something moreso made to fill the space in a film rather than to be listened to by itself. This record is a funk/soul record, and is quite pleasant if not obvious that it was made in the interest of accompanying a blacksploitation movie. Nice flute passages and sentimental piano accompany muted guitar strumming and prominent horn sections.
Just not for me.
Superfly indeed.
3.5 Stars
Pre Listen: This is stupid, but I've heard of Super Fly before only from Jojo part 4. Haven't listened to the album, and I had no idea it was a movie until seeing the album cover here. No idea what genre it'll be other than soundtrack adjacent, so no expectations really? Notable Tracks: Pusherman - Lyrically my favorite track. Got me chuckling, conveys the sleaziness of a dealer so well. I've met people this song's about, to a tee. Freddie's Dead - Another highlight here, it's so damn FUNKY man I'm lovin this album. Junkie Chase - Favorite track on the album. It's such a jam, and I hate it's so short. Post Listen: What a great soundtrack holy moly. Without having watched the movie before, I understood it's vibes perfect for a funky 70's action movie. Those instrumentals were phenomenal. Smooth as can be, blending funk with jazz, and complimenting the vocals to perfection. Every song was a real groove, and I'll be adding quite a few to my playlist. I'm also very interested in watching the movie now, if only to understand the context for some of the tracks. Well composed music, and the first soundtrack-type album on here that where I can really understand it's inclusion on this list. No Negative Notes, great album, wish it was longer. 5/5
This is a damn good album. Holy balls there's hits all over this thing. Iconic, musical. Hell yeah
This one of those interesting moments when the soundtrack dramatically outshines the film, which is honestly not that good. I've heard this before a number of times, but it's always good to revisit. The soundtrack on the other hand, is fantastic. These songs are beautifully constructed and arranged. I really love the mixture of strings and horns with the guitar bass and drums. The album also really is well sequenced and the lyrics are telling a more interesting story than is actually in the film. I'm hoping we will be getting more Curtis Mayfield.
It’s so damn smooth. Really fun listen. Huge throwback. Some of the middle section is a bit slower. Some absolute classics on here though and one of the best soundtrack albums ever
I didn’t really know anything about this going in except I had heard part of the title track cause it’s sampled in the intro to Ready to Die, so I was surprised for a couple of reasons. One, I didn’t know that all he sang about was drugs on this album, and two I thought it was gonna be a lot more fun and like hype. And it was the other type of funk, more War than Funkadelic, which is fine but I don’t prefer it. Regardless of what type of funk it is though, this is just a really solid album. He’s got a beautiful voice obviously, and there’s some great instrumentals on here. I really liked this a lot, I was just hoping for a little more pep to it. Favorites: Freddie’s Dead, Eddie You Should Know Better, Superfly
- This album has a funky, soulful groove to it. - Instrumentally, I like the bass and drums the most here. There are some nice guitar licks peppered throughout, too. - The vocals are good and distinct, but I don't love them as much as everyone else seems to - I find them kind of thin and nasal, which is never my favourite. But, I do feel the charisma! - The album is pretty front-loaded and suffers a bit from being a soundtrack - it doesn't really stand on it's own... there are cool elements, throughout, but none of the songs are really hits. - Appreciate that the album is short and sweet. That said, some of the songs went on too long.

Superfly
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background
1) "Little Child Runnin' wild" - Very harsh sounding at first, with mellow sounds coating you. Wonderful vocals. I think orchestration will be the name of the game in this album. Very good soul. 2) "Pusherman" - A bit more mellow song, vocals are so good. Love the percussions. 3) "Freddie's dead" - Orchestral work here is wild. Love the lyrics, very immersive song. 4) "Junkie Chase" (instrumental) - Small instrumental done tastefully. Very fast and pretty much going through you for all 1 and a half minutes. 5) "Give Me Your Love (Love Song)" - Very touching song, orchestration still great. Vocals are wonderful. The whole atmosphere is just wonderful here. 6) "Eddie You Should Know Better" - Another track that coats you inside and out in atmosphere. 7) "No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song)" - Love me some talking on a track. Soul music is so good and a bit old, but at the same time refreshing. Singing is wonderful, love the thematics of a song. 8) "Think" (instrumental) - Slow bare bones instrumental at the beginning slowly morphing into something greater. 9) "Superfly" - Embodiment of this album, culmination of it. Very good closing track, fully rich in sound. ------------ Conclusion: It's one of the first soul albums I've listened to and I love it immensley. Great album, I'm so happy I started this project. This album was rich in interesting sound decisions, the orchestral work was phenomenal, the vocal work was magical and this is one of the best albums I've listened to. 9.5/10
Hmm bisschen langweilig und alt. Vielleicht beim Schule machen
I like early 70s funk and Curtis Mayfield was the man. This is a great concept/soundtrack album that did better than the movie that it was a part of.
This started kinda slow for me. But as it went on dayum. The song Eddie Should Know Better is great and I’m starting to wonder how much Dave grohl checked out Morris Jennings’s drumming. Quality album.
Całkiem przyjemne, nie moje klimaty bym to pokochała, napewno lepsze niz radiohead
Highlights: Freddie's Dead No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) Superfly
Opening track Little Child Runnin' Wild is really great and devastating. Wow what an opener. Pusherman is unique too but not as good. There's something about the instrumentation, song structure and lyrics that make me relate to this much more than the James Brown or Stevie Wonders of the era. I want to go see Superfly. I like this a lot. A solid 4.
I really really enjoyed the sound of this album. Mayfield is an amazing vocalist and the soul beats are great. It was great to hear the original version of Freddie’s dead. The songs weren’t quite memorable to reach a 5 but this album is great
yeah it was fine, not for me though
Never heard this album before - nor the film. Quite nice but doesn't make it onto my play list
I love Mayfield, but this was just okay. 2.5 rounded up to 3.
p260. 1972. 2 stars. Quality early 70s soul, but lacking any standout tracks. On the plus side, it's short.
Really loved this one. Started off a little slow for me but quickly got into a groove. Deliciously funky, exceptionally musically right and lyrics hit incredibly hard. Made me want to hit repeat straight away.
This album is the soundtrack to the 1972 movie of the same name. It's classified as funk soul with orchestration. Like much of his music the lyrics are social commentary on poverty and drugs in black culture. This is a great album and one of the best from the genre. It has been very influential on black artists and hip-hop and often sampled. It's very cool with his signature falsetto. Top Songs Little Child Runnin' Wild Pusherman Freddie's Dead Superfly
Ok I guess
Great record. First album in a few days that I was thankful to listen to. I’d never heard the album in full, but man, what a collection of songs. Title track, Freddie’s Dead, Pusherman. Just great production quality, vocals, instrumentation. More songs should sound like this. Deducting a star because I felt it lost some steam in the middle of the album before the final instrumental and title track.
Complex, political, genre-bending and ahead of its time. Influential funk at its very best!
Funky background music but not sure I'll revisit
Okay!!! We all know I love funk and like... YES exactly. So good, so smooth, so easy and yet so complex and rich and lovely. Silky, rich heavily buttered pancakes as an album.

I didn't recognize it at the time, but this is a great album. Curtis Mayfield was a very talented singer/songwriter/musician. The song Superfly is just genius. Brilliant.
This was huge whiplash listening directly after the Suicide album. Really like this album, sounded even better contrasted against the other 'album' I just listened to. Not a bad song here, really enjoyed it. 8.5/10
gotta watch this movie
Smooth, funky, and cool, all things I can get down with. It somewhat dips in the middle but then picks back up in the end. Favs: Think, Freddie's Dead, Superfly
Arguably one of the greatest soundtracks ever created. I'd of course heard "Pusherman" before this, but it was a fun experience to listen to the entire album. Beautiful instrumentation with Mayfield's ultra-smooth vocals to boot - this was all around a great listen. Fun mix of tempos and grooves, as well as a depth to the lyrics that I probably should have expected going in but was pleased by nonetheless. Made me want to watch the movie to see where and how these tracks get integrated! 3.5/5 rounded up Favorite tracks: Superfly, Freddie's Dead, No Thing on Me
Thoughts: Feel like I'm in a heist movie set in the 70's. Jazzy and smooth

Buen disco de Soul y Funk! Solo conocía Pusherman, las demás buenas!
I genuinely love this album. Curtis Mayfield is at his best.
Obsessed.
I listened certain songs… and I do not remember if I have already written a review… Nevertheless, I liked some songs: Pusherman, No think on me and the Leasing: Superfly
Really like the vibe of this album.
Like this a lot. Freddie’s Dead and Superfly are of course classics, but all the songs are very listenable. At the time this was pretty amazing stuff, an artful blend of funk with meaningful lyrics. 5/5
Enjoyed this, what a talent tragically cut short.
Love Curtis. Got damn
I just don't think I'm cool enough for this music.
Little child runnin’ wild: I love how it has its own vibe. I love how it uses a lot of instruments. Very hard to do musically. Got a jazzy feel. Like how they used pizz in strings. And the big band moments. 5/5 Pusherman: I love the bass. Drums good as always. Lyrics a little more catchy here. It feels more cool/hipster. 5/5 Freddie’s dead: I love it. 5/5
Classic funk.
Lekker groovy. SUPAHFLYY
For eksempel på Give Me Your Love...
Fun
Vibe: background music, not noticeable Feels like: calm, cool brico store background music; transition music Time of day: sunny afternoon driving Songs saved for later: 0
The top review for this album gives 5 stars and says "Now this is how urban ‘social justice’ music is done. A concept album with a coherent, humanistic concept." - translation: "I only want black people to sing about their experiences in nice falsettos and they have to say how bad/wrong their upbringing and/or current situation was while avoiding putting the blame on white people." The reviewer implies that the "humanistic concept" is integral to their review score but, looking at their review history, they have given artists like Public Enemy 1 star reviews. PUBLIC ENEMY aren't humanistic enough for this guy. I'm sure the reasoning for these 1 star reviews is sound though. What's that? They invoke Nazi philosopher Carl Schmitt? They completely miss the point by thinking Chuck D wants to be the enemy, as opposed to him just accepting and embracing a label he feels has already been put on him by the establishment? Oh... Oh no. They go on to imply that MLK Jr. was acceptable, but Malcolm X was not, which perfectly sums up the disconnect between their reviews for Superfly and Public Enemy. They remind me of Betty Draper in Mad Men who, in response to the murder of four black girls by segregationalists, says, about civil rights, "Maybe it's not supposed to happen right now." - an extreme example perhaps, but their reviews speak of black aggression towards injustice in the same way. Anyway, I'm bored now so, to conclude, this reviewer is a pseudointellectual clown. Superfly is a pretty good album though.
Just so smoooooooooth ! Clearly constrained by being a film soundtrack, but more than just easy listening nevertheless.
Super cool album. Found it really reminiscent of other movie soundtracks of the era like Shaft and Across 100th Street. Despite having never seen this film, I feel like I could see the images in my head as the music played.
The soul and funk sound was so good
Bad ass vibe music.
Way cooler than I expected! Though I’ve loved “Pusherman” since my sister put it on a mixtape for me when I was a kid.
Very cool sound and funky album. He has an excellent voice and this flowed nicely as a movie soundtrack should. It's not something I would normally listen to and not sure any of the individual songs stood out, but as a whole it was fun. Would listen again!
This album made me consider getting into funk. I really enjoyed Freddie's Dead and Superfly, so lyrical and well composed.
Zaskoczenie! Idealne do potańczenia i vibe'owania, wrócę.
Good stuff. Not something I’d listen to on the regular, but enjoyed it start to finish.
Very disfrutón.
Highlights: Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Junkie Chase, Superfly Given the aura this record has built up around itself, I expected a bit more, but in the end it wasn't really all that mind blowing. Prior to this listen I had only heard the better-known tracks, and as it turns out, that's pretty much all that's required. The rest is more or less standard 70's blaxploitation soundtrack business. Now I don't know how groundbreaking this record is for that genre, but I don't really care because it isn't crazy interesting. It's a fine listen, but best kept as background music (of course, not counting the highlights). The drug theme is kinda interesting, but the vocal style doesn't change much throughout, so it lost me after a while. This introspection a la Gaye felt a bit simpler than what he offers. This one's much more focused on style, which it does have, but again, it's just a soundtrack and it doesn't give it its all after the first third.
This sounds like exactly what it is - a classic Blaxploitation movie soul soundtrack. Wah-wah guitar, sweeping strings, and lyrics that follow the story. It's well done, but kind of all sounds the same.
Extremely groovy
exceptional
First Listen Favorites: Pusherman No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) Give Me Your Love (Love Song) Honorable Mentions: Junkie Chase (Instrumental) Freddie's Dead
Was a fun listen but not something I would rush back to. Cool vibes tho! 3
This is a great album with great soul numbers with jazzy themes. A loose concept album of ghetto street life. One of the best soundtracks ever.
For 45 minutes I was in the headspace of a funky soul brother under the crushing power of The Man
Such a majorly influential artist.
No thing on me (albumets starkaste spår).
Super Fly is Super Funky and Super Fun and I enjoyed it, especially the non-funky additions like the added strings. Highlights are "Pusherman" and the instrumental "Junkie Chase."
This was part of a larger movement, that of black artists expressing/commenting on what they saw around them on a daily basis, spearheaded by Mayfield and others, including The Temptations, Sly, and Marvin Gaye, to name just a few. This sure ain’t no “My Girl” or “Dancin’ in the Streets”.
This was interesting, at least. I feel like it’s about drugs and sex or something. I like the cover art. Sometimes it’s hard to rate albums so removed from their original context.
This was pretty good, and definitely better than the "Shaft" soundtrack. But, for all of Curtis Mayfield's excellence, it's still not really my jam.
I have three Curtis Mayfield albums and I love all of them. He should have a park or a highway in Chicago named after him.
I found this inexplicably cool and fun. Much better than Supa Dupa Fly.
4/5 - Made me want to see the movie. Quality 70s soul/funk record. Will listen again.
Interesting, not really my thing
Really great start but I kinda felt out of it in the second half
