Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Funky. Super. Fly. I’ve seen this album featured on various sites as a top 5 funk album all time. Never listened to it. It’s funk. It’s soul. It’s R&B. Really enjoyed each of the 36 minutes. The blend of instruments is crazy and the concept running thru the album of the attempt to escape the poverty-stricken drug abuse culture is gripping. At times, Mayfield somehow had me tapping my foot and feeling sorrowful at the same time. I was really rooting for the character to break free of the temptations all around. A real treat and a solid 5 ⭐️ for me.

Obvious classic, no skips, possibly the greatest soundtrack ever. He didn't have to go this hard but he did. The movie is good but this is better. When I was a kid I used to listen to "Pusherman" and play Narc on PS2 and think "Fuck I can't wait to start smoking weed".
[9/10] Siri buy Superfly on blu ray, express shipping A masterpiece
Masterpiece. Compositions, not songs.
This has everything that I love about soul: incredibly funky, extensive musical arrangements, and Mayfield’s voice is awesome as well. I really appreciate the lyrical content as well. And man I wish Junky Chase went on longer, such a good instrumental.
Banger album. I like this one a lot more than Curtis. 4.5/5
I loves me some Curtis Mayfield.
The soundtrack is so good it makes me want to watch the film
no skips, i will not be elaborating
Hard to beat.
I don’t really have a cogent review, but this is smooth as hell. Great for Saturday.
Freddy's not dead ;-)Ten stars**********
Great top to bottom

Straight up awesome, love everything about this album.
I probably wouldn’t have listened to Superfly on my own — but I’m really glad I did. This album is really, really good. Curtis Mayfield’s talent as a songwriter and producer in the ’70s is undeniable, and Superfly is proof of just how prolific and ahead of his time he truly was. There isn’t a single bad song on this album. Every track feels intentional, groove-heavy, and filled with purpose. “Freddie’s Dead” is an absolute banger — funky, haunting, and full of social commentary without ever losing its swagger. But the real standout for me was “Think.” It’s so different from anything else I’ve heard from Curtis — atmospheric, intense, and rhythmically gripping. It shows just how much range he had. Superfly isn’t just a soundtrack — it’s a statement. It captures a moment, elevates it, and still sounds fresh and relevant today. Five stars, no hesitation. Favorite song: Think
I rate pusher man a 5 star because the beat is nice and the lyrics are nice and the singing is beautiful. I rate Freddys dead a 5 star because the beat is nice and the lyrics are nice and the singing is beautiful. And the setting good. I rate Super fly a 5 star because the beat is nice and the lyrics are nice and the singing is beautiful. And the setting good.
I like this song because it has a lot of instruments. I like listening to jazz a lot and playing the instruments took him a while. Again I like all the instruments and his voice is so smooth
Dang, this is awesome - really kick ass soul! I think I'd only heard "Pusherman" before, but the whole album is great - I can definitely see why it became so popular! Haven't seen the movie, so can't comment on whether it deserved to be eclipsed by its soundtrack. Fave tracks - "Little Child Runnin' Wild", "Pusherman", "Superfly" but my absolute fave was "Freddie's Dead"
This was great, his voice is amazing, the whole band is amazing. I listened to it twice cause it flew by so fast.
Loved this one. Those horns. Those drums. That little splash of flute. Possibly some harp? There was a lot going on here. All of it absolutely fantastic. Peak 70’s blacksploitation soundtrack right here. Only complaint was I wanted more.
This whole album is fire....'Pusherman', 'Freddie's Dead', and 'Superfly' makes it 5 stars by itself. I noticed 'Think' is used in the beat for 'Nobody's Perfect' by Missy Elliot and J. Cole. Always fun to track one of those down in the wild.
Incredible album of jazz and funk infused soul. I mean, it has both Pusherman and Superfly! Two stone cold classics. And the rest of the tracks are equally great. I’ve been listening on constant rotation for the last few days. It’s such a rich album full of funk and beauty. Do yourself a favour and listen to ”Makings of you” from the Curtis! Live album from 1971. One of recording history’s finest moments.
incredible soul that mixes a bit with jazz and rock. bangers
Groovy start to finish. I have no knowledge of the film, but from the songs alone you can paint a picture. Really enjoyable.
So much better then the last Mayfield item on this list! Only my second experience with him but this was a fun time, as I said in my previous review of his work, he's got such a fantastic voice and the instrumentals on this one shine so much more. Solid 4.5 but I'll give it five stars for the sake of how much I was surprised by my enjoyment of this!
One of the all time great soul albums. Nothing more to say about this one.
Funkiest album ever, just bop after bop
it’s superfly!
Two words...Supa Fly.
OVERALL: Extremely fly. This funk, jazz, and soul album has probably gotten me into the genres as a whole. Little Child Runnin', Eddie You Should Know Better, Think, and Freddie's Dead are absolute masterpieces, and the jazz elements, especially in Superfly, are incredible and extremely well utilized. I guess I don't like Pusherman or Give Me Your love that much, but they aren't that bad. Also, this feels a lot longer than just 9 songs. SONG AVG: 8.83/10 PERSONAL RATING: 9.55/10 Little Child Runnin' Wild: Fantastic, so unbelievably funky. I have never heard a song by this man before, and I am very impressed. He used every single instrument that he could, and he did it so incredibly well. Also, that saxophone is NNN ending. 10/10 Pusherman: I really like this, it sounds exactly like how I imagine a drug dealer's theme song would sound like, but why do the percussion instruments sound like that? I don't hate it, but it is a bit weird when paired with the melodic stuff. Speaking of which, the instruments (not percussion) sound more boring, but they are still very well performed. This is the song that made me realize that this album was for a movie. 6.5/10 Freddie's Dead: The intro was a bit boring, but it got so much better. The bassline is great, and Curtis Mayfield continues to use his massive array of instruments to their full capability. The only things I don't like about it are the intro and outro for being boring, but the rest of the song is fantastic. 9.5/10 Junkie Chase: The weird ass percussion is back at around 0:15, but it actually works really well this time. It sounds like a Cowboy Bebop chase. The instruments are, once again, played incredibly, and the drummer goes insane. The only problem is the length and the weird ass percussion. 8.75/10 Give Me Your Love: Was this played during a sex scene? It kinda sounds like it was, and I refuse to elaborate. As per usual, the entirety of the instruments are done very well, especially those strings, but I feel like this song drags on a bit. Also, Curtis Mayfield sounds out of place due to the general lack of vocals. 7/10 Eddie You Should Know Better: I need more of this. I cannot name a single thing wrong with this, and I really tried. It sounds great, it's lyrically great, and its absolutely incredible. There just is no producer tag (we depressed music) 11/10 No Thing on Me: Sung beautifully and sounds pretty good, but it does the fade out outro :(. The speaking in the intro brings this song down, and the song kinda drags on. With that being said, this is one of, if not the best instrumental in this album. 8.75/10 Think: The oboe and the French horn have the best dialogue in this whole album. It's so beautiful, I can't put it into words. Listen to this right now. I guess it's not lyrically impressive, probably because it doesn't have any lyrics. 9.5/10 Superfly: This is more what I was expecting from a movie soundtrack. Such a mood switch between this and think. Incredibly funky, and it is definitively fly. I guess as an album outro, it works, but it just so happened to be right after Think. 8.5/10
Extremely cool album.
Never listened to Mayfield until now. This blew me away. Think, superfly, pusherman. Vocals, sax, guitar, arrangements. Loved it.
When I graduated college I moved into a place with my cousin and some friends. We all had similar musical tastes and at some point we went into a collective manic obsession with 70’s R&B and Soul and Curtis Mayfield was our North Star. We were constantly exchanging songs and the closer we could get to Mayfield, the better. We had a gigantic Superfly poster on the wall, which we didn’t contemplate the optics of (4 white guys with a blaxploitation movie poster) I still don’t think I know if that’s cool? Looking back I’m not sure exactly how we all landed at the same conclusion at the same time: Curtis Mayfield rules and was cool as hell. This time through I’m really astounded with how great this album is. There really isn’t a bad moment. This time through Little Child Running Wild and the instrumentals stood out. I also hadn't contemplated how seriously he took this, but in many ways its a lot like What's Going On. Mayfields concept album (concept album boys stand up!) I just learned Mayfield wrote the music largely as a critique to the film (glorifying drug use and culture). I'm less interested in that and more so just appreciative of how great his songs and this album sounds. It starts with the grooves (Pusherman for example) but it goes beyond that to consistently engaging songs and moments that are incredibly "cool". Curtis was a wise choice for a movie called "Super Fly". One of my favorite Impressions songs is "It's Alright" and I wouldn't say that's cool, but it does make you feel good and has a great groove. Quick retraction on RHCP: I said I don't like music that makes me feel sad, which is too broad. I just don't like RHCP and trying to understand why.
This a completely foundational album for me, so I’m incapable of analyzing it or being critical. Have a distinct memory of being like 16, blasting this album while driving around the lily white suburbs, filled with desire to go out into the world of danger and desperation he’s describing. It’s absurd I guess, in 2025, for a suburban whjte Dad to feel such strong nostalgia for an album that was already 25 years old when I first heard it - an album dealing with a world I had absolutely no understanding of and couldn’t relate to at all.( Thinking now - I wonder if this album was playing in my subconscious when I decided, for reasons I still don’t understand, to be a social worker in the bronx for like 5 years. What a strange move, Frank) Maybe it’s resonance speaks to the universality of the themes, the perfection and creativity of the music, the storytelling that neither romanticizes, wallows in, or glorifies the issues it explores. I don’t know. In any event I’ve been blasting this for like 3 days now. Kinda wanna quit my corporate cushy job and jump back into the fire w my old friends Freddie, Eddie and Superfly. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Blows my mind now just like it did when I was 16.
First listen. Almost perfect!
i was already familiar with superfly but yeah its masterful both in its lyrics and its SHEER GROOVE POWER
maybe the haziest, most impressionist effect that has ever been achieved by a record where thats not an obviously accurate description of the sound itself...everything is in clear space and precisely chosen and presented in perfect clarity, but it still feels like a dream somehow...maybe one u are currently having rather then one u are remembering in daylight. idek what else to say other then its cool im on a lil streak of records i havent heard in a long time but were overdue for a revisit :))) curtis has to be one of the goats
did not expect that I would ever give a movie soundtrack a 5 star rating but there it is
I mean…
Nice progression, the penultimate song being instrumental felt like it came at the right time and really gave a chance to digest the rest of the album
I’ve never heard of the movie Superfly but maybe I’ll give it a watch now! I like the funky soul-inspired vibe of this album. It gives heavy 70s vibes and Mayfield’s voice is soothing. Little Child Runnin’ Wild is a fun way to start off the album. Pusherman is a funky jazz bop with witty lyrics and badass percussion. Eddie You Should Know Better brought out the triangle and the soul, it’s a beautiful slow song. Superfly is such a fun song and it makes you want to dance and bump your head. Fave Song: Pusherman Least Fave Song: No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song) Rating: 5/5
Wow oh wow. Silky damn smooth. What a find. Every damn song is an absolute hit. Little Child Runnin' Wild Freddie's Dead Give Me Your Love (Love Song) Eddie You Should Know Better No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song) as absolute favourites, the entire thing is fucking awesome. Will be keeping this for occasional playing for the rest of my life!
Pusherman - better be pushing this album What a fun album. It’s funky, it’s orchestral, it’s got some dark themes about drugs; what more can you ask for. It also stands on its own without the movie which definitely counts for something. Favorite - Freddie’s Dead
Excellent
Another wonderful record.
I love Curtis Mayfield and I’ve already had this album in my playlists for a long time. However, I still went and re-listened to it and it was honestly a bit better than I remembered. Just a very good album by a great artist in a genre I thoroughly enjoy.
Favourite song - Freddies dead
This was stellar. After listening to a string of okay-but-not-my-thing albums, this was a breath of fresh air. Funky, groovy, excellent jazzy instruments - I loved this from start to finish.
Nice mini diversion into Blaxploitation by Curtis. Used to play Pusherman on repeat back in the day. Crisp, clear production throughout. May be my favorite original soundtrack album, but will ponder this one further...
Fire.
I have not had very many soundtracks pop up for me. I could probably count on one hand the number I’ve had. The best are the ones that don’t need to be approached as a soundtrack to be enjoyed. Ones that can stand on their own as its own entity are really great. There aren’t a lot of those. But one you will always see mentioned is the Superfly album. Done by the Gentle Genius, Curtis Mayfield, himself. The film this records title is based on is a classic 70s film, and one that Curtis is featured in himself. This record wasn’t predicted to do any sort of numbers when it released alongside the film, and I think the fact that it outperformed the movie is hilarious, but also very telling. During the 70s, “fly” was used to describe someone confident and fashionable. It acts in the same way as “ill” did in the 90s. And I personally can’t think of a better adjective to describe the sound of the record other than fly. It’s fly as fuck. Maybe the single flyest set of songs I’ve ever heard. I guess I should have expected something this good from the same guy who made Move On Up, but I couldn’t have ever anticipated how amazing this is. This album is so overconfident in how cool it sounds, but it absolutely has the chops to back itself up. I was not aware of the kind of compositions Mayfield was capable of. But the string and horn sections are all top of the line. From an instrumental perspective, this album is flawless. Not one lackluster moment. Mayfield also has a delightful voice. Many would say the lyrical content here is more ideal than the movie. In terms of theme, this almost directly parallels the movie, which is probably a genius move on his part. It gives a much more direct take on drug dealers and poverty, which the movie more so embraces. I think my least favorite song is probably the second of two instrumentals, called Think. And it is not by any means a bad song. Even the shorter tracks still fit so much into such a brief amount of time. This doesn’t even reach the 40 minute mark, but I wish it were an hour. Some of the most suave and badass sounding music I’ve ever heard, and it completely makes up for most of the forgettable garbage I hear on a regular basis. Rating: 9/10
Excellent
Every song written with such empathy and the arrangements are so cinematic and perfect
Great album. And its a soundtrack!
Already loving everything a couple songs in. Def had heard Pusherman before. Percussion on it is incredible. It's probably because I already saw it was a soundtrack, but I can picture this being in an old 70s/80s cop movie ala Starsky & Hutch. Album absolutely flew by for me. That was smooth af I think I'll go listen to more Curtis Mayfield now.
Certified funky fresh. This album fucks.
little child runnin wild seeehr geil mit percussion und so i lieb. jo. sehr sehr geil sehr warm super geil gspielt. pusherman isch jo huuuuuere geil FICK. freddie's dead au seeeehr geil. d strings sind suuuper schön igsetzt. no thing to me isch au sooo gueti luune. ich liebs gad. biah think isch au gad crazy schön, mega david T walker style gitti. und sopraaaansax!! To mi radi, Kurtise! Jako dobar album. Tako cosy, chill zvuk s malo tog njegovog šmekerstva i malo peglice on top. Izuzetno fino. Baš ono, takva raznolikost i bogatstvo zvuka. Ovo mi je u top 3 albuma s liste, bar zasad. Petica kao kuća, ma šta kuća, hotel! 5/5, 10/10.
I to pretežno zbog ovih "živih" bubnjeva i perkusija.
Oh yeah, this is good. I found myself grooving in my kitchen as I was making Sunday dinner. I'll admit that Pusherman makes me want to time travel and do all the drugs mentioned in the song - times must've been wild. I need to listen again since I know I missed some poignant lyrics, but what a great listen on the first go round. I'm giving this an enthusiastic 5 stars.
Soulful Funky 70’s music
It's a funky classic, no more needs to be said.
So so so so so so good. The sound and feel of this album is both of its time and timeless. 5 stars.
I can't believe my luck. Another absolutely fantastic album! Loved this album. Heard quite a bit of it before. Love the funky soul stuff.
Great album
Hey, so there are soundtracks on here! Although this album easily stands on its own. The songs are wonderfully crafted, and the lyrics are fervent and moving. Mayfield's concerns are just as relevant as ever. I look forward to listening again.
9/10 Beautiful. The vocals and the big band feel give this album such a pleasant atmosphere even though some of the the themes are dark Favourite Song=Freddies Dead Least Favourite Song=Give Me Your Love(Love Song)
I know I've written against having movie soundtracks on this list several times by now, but hot dang, you just can't stop that funk.
Iconic soul album.
Good album lots of drug references
Incredible and soulful record. Impossible to not boogie to.
Sophisticated and badass — two words rarely used together, but fitting for this amazing album!
Listened a lot when younger
This album is brilliant. Passionate, soulful, and sweet 5/5
A very enthusiastic five stars!! This was such a satisfying, complete-sounding album. Everything about it hit just right. Such detail, thoughtful storytelling, amazing vibes and very skilled singer, arrangement and musicians. I even had the 'hey, I know this... I think' with Freddie's Dead. I am so glad this album was what I started my day with. Made me feel like a person on the hardly-light first morning of October.
Nice
Essential funk.
Funk, soul, rhythm and blues Bläser, sexy and coole Stimme Jede Zelle in deinem Körper wippt im Rhythmus, die Beine halten mit, der ganze Körper ist inzwischen dabei Zu schön um wahr zu sein
Magnificent, sharp, soulful commentary on inner city life
Very good!!!
Curtis Mayfield is amazing.
very groovy very lovely but just not my style
SUPERFLYYYYY 10/10
9.5/10
EVERYTHING and more.
just brilliant
Spectacular funk album from the man Mr. Mayfield. This dude embodies cool, calm and collected. He has ghetto swagger combined with high fidelity tastes and standards. All of which is encompassed in the words and music on this here album. I can't even tell you how long I've been a fan of this album. Probably since I was single digits in age, it just always spoke to. He was also ahead of his time in speaking to the masses about the disenfranchised populations of black accross America. Far and wide this album should be hailed. Similar to last weeks Stevie Wonder album, should be understood that Curtis was a funk monster, could out funk anyone in a fight. But, he stays reserved here in crafting soul simple and short melodic backgrounds to his evangelical epitaph.
I love soul funk and could listen to this album anytime. Think - Instrumental is gorgeous and Pusherman is a classic.
A movie soundtrack masterpiece. Has certainly aged better than the movie itself. Curtis Mayfield forever!
Brilliant album - a timeless classic.
My general distaste for soundtracks is displaced by my love for good Chicago soul, and there's little better than Curtis Mayfield and this soundtrack for Super Fly. Short and sweet and oh so funky.
this is the kind of album that makes you cooler for having listened to it and ultimately what else is a white boy looking for in music
Bro blaxploitation music goes crazy hard god DAMN. Let a man HUSTLE on these hard streets, fuckin Nixon behind all this. "But Curtis Mayfield I sell drugs to the community!" OK all that aside I loved this fucking album, every song on this album was amazing, whatever you got going on this album will cure it. Funky as hell and full of colour. Curtis Mayfield is the a GOAT and this album is easily is best work to use as an example of him. 5/5
This is just funky as hell. Very raw message and a unique sound too. Just a masterpiece.
Love
Groovy as hell. Incredible percussion. Cool falsetto. A soul funk master class.
gonna save this gem, jazzy and very good
A spectacular, impossibly cool soundtrack album. One of the best original soundtracks ever I think. Oozes cool.
Absolutely beautiful. Would play this on repeat if I wasn't only a tenth of the way through this list.
What a fantastic album for a lazy Sunday. The music is soulful and funky with so much going on. Amazing lyrics. What's not to love. I want to see the movie now.
Smooth.
Funky and cool. Vibes. Yeah this is good. Early 70s soundtracks are unbeatable. Rip Freddie. “Think - Instrumental” is nice.
Very good, one of his best. One of my favorites as well.
So many awesome songs on this album. Great reminder of how music can capture a moment, an experience, a culture.
Damn near perfect album. A concept album at heart, written by probably the most viable artist of the time to speak out on the nuances of life in the ghetto in the early seventies without seeming like he was either exploiting are pandering to the issues at hand. And the music! I just love the arrangements and orchestration. I played it on background during dinner just to see how the girls reacted to the music, and it didn’t take them long to start moving to the grooves; two enthusiastic thumbs up from both. They have good taste 🥰.
Such a cool album. Every time I listen to it it makes me feel like I’m some sort of crime drama. It’s like I’m a cocaine dealer in Harlem. I’ve decided I want to quit the criminal underworld and go straight but I’m gonna have to commit one more crime. Then I’m out. Anyway, things don’t go as easily as I wanted them to or as I thought they would. Incredible the way music can transport you so far into your imagination. 4.5
Liked it!
Awesome
Already listened to this beautiful album!
A really good album, I liked Pusherman, Junkie Chase and Superfly the most.
Brilliant. Personal favourites are Superfly, Freddy's Dead and Pusherman 5/5
Along with Isaac Hayes's work on Shaft and Bobby Womack's on Across 110th Street, Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack for Super Fly was a defining work of the Blaxploitation genre. Unlike those other artists though, Mayfield's album eclipsed the film for which is was written and became a funk and soul classic on its own merits. Singles Freddie's Dead and the title track as well as Pusherman ooze cool while also serving as social commentary, highlighting the problems that hard drugs were causing amongst poor black communities. Mayfield used his personal experience alongside the events in the script to create songs that had their own life. No wonder that the album has been sampled so often.
Groovy ass mother fucking album. The sweet soul vocals and swinging instrumentals. This is a certified classic
An old favorite!!
I definitely need to do a soul deep dive
Certified classic. Have loved this album for years.
Music for the mind, body, and third eye
++ Little Child Runnin' Wild, Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Junkie Chase (instrumental), Give Me Your Love (Love Song), No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song), Think (instrumental), Superfly + Eddie You Should Know Better 9,7/10
Incredible and not even my favourite Curtis.
I have listened to quite a few r&b albums so far, and while I’ve liked some of them, I haven’t really loved any. This is my favorite one I’ve heard. Felt like a concept album with varied songs, lots of depth. Even the instrumentals were great.
Not bad
Very nice
So good. Beautiful. Lush. Catchy. This isn’t the right album for all moods, but it is the perfect album for the right mood.
Oh, yeah. That’s the shit. *chef’s kiss*
Probably Mayfield's best album, which is odd to say about a soundtrack but there you go.
laid back political album has aged well. Such a cool approach to the Black Power themes, I could listen to this album all day long.... love the drums especially.
Love this album. Early 70s soul at its best.
👍👍👍👍👍
This is without a doubt one of the best discoveries I made this year. A true Soul masterpiece. I just keep asking myself (I did my homework) why an album with the importance almost as great as Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" had never reached my ears, not even through the film that bears the same name . Music never ceases to amaze me!
Generally liked it a lot. 5. Give Me Your Love. Gran instrumentación, liking it now. 7. No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song). Bien mojtro, ¿qué me esperaba yo? Está calidad. 9. Superfly. Naaa, re mojtro. Super cool. Le daría 4.5! Pero I liked the other before, so that makes it a fucking 5!
classic soul album. great singing, subject matter & instrumentation.
Freddy's Dead, Pusherman, and Superfly are all worth the price of admission and then some, but the entire album is a great listen. It's difficult to overstate Mayfield's talent. The man was an absolute creative machine.
Smooth.
Utter classic.
Pure soulful funk. Curtis Mayfield had a way of taking a dark subject and some making joyful music out of it. Liked songs added: - Pusherman (added before) - Freddie's Dead (Theme from 'Superfly')
This album was so fun. Just super groovy all the way through. Really enjoyable. S teir
Sick funk music
Perfeito!!!
A classic album from that era. Totally drops me into the early 70’s
Outsold the movie, outlasted the moment, and laid down grooves that still echo through Doggystyle and Kendrick. Excellent funk right here.
Pusherman is my fave.
Best soul I’ve heard of this yet? Really enjoyed all of this with Freddie’s dead being the highlight probably. Didn’t even have the song by Curtis I knew off it. This is the standard for soul!
Love a good movie soundtrack
Excellent album, and underrated stand battle
Grew up on this!
Excellent early 70’s soul. Paints a harrowing and sympathetic canvas of issues which still plague us today.
SMOOTH AS HELL
This is fucking dope.
Funky, vibrant and fun album. Diverse and touching jazz that had me bobbing my head. Never heard of the movie, but this soundtrack is amazing. Standouts: Little Child Runnin’ Wild, Freddie’s Dead, Give Me Your Love, Eddie You Should Know Better, and Think - Instrumental.
“Make a soundtrack to a blaxploitation film.” “No, I think I’ll draw attention to the condition on black folks living in poverty and drug abuse.” And aren’t we lucky he did. Soulfull, funky, and brilliant.
I've been looking forward to getting this one for a bit. I'm not disappointed at all; it's as good as I remember. Tight performances, great vocals from Mayfield, and expertly produced. It stands alone from its film, which is high praise for a movie soundtrack, in my opinion. Let the funk and soul envelope you. Highlights: Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, No Thing on Me, Think, Superfly
Ça les amis, c’est un vrai chef d’œuvre funky braisé dans du délicieux Soul fumé. Instru, voix, message, ingéniosité musicale, tout est là En plus, ça vient avec un film en bonus
Excellent reminder of the great Curtis Mayfield, the godfather of Chicago soul.
Really liked this, what a great soundtrack for a movie that captures an era.
Great album. V chill and fun
This album is about as cool as it gets. The orchestra/band is so tight throughout the album. The vocals are outstanding. It's impossible not to move while listening. The instrumentals are just as fun as the songs with vocals. You can clearly hear the influence in this album in modern music.
One of the greatest film soundtracks ever recorded.
Beautiful
Super Fly not only fits perfectly with the namesake film, it works beautifully as a concept album about poverty and drug addiction apart from it too. The horns are putting in some incredible work.
I've loved Pusherman for a while but never listened to the whole album so getting this one was exciting. Easy 5, every song on the album brings as much funk as it can through the vocals and the brass with ease. Then getting to Think and just having an instrumental song to chill out with (Junkie Chase comes first of course but it's hardly chill), it's an exceptional journey. Pusherman is still definitely my favorite song, I think it would be even if this was my first listen, Little Child Runnin' Wild and Freddie's Dead are highlights as well.
Superfly is an arguable high point in the long, illustrious career of Curtis Mayfield. This was the soundtrack to a movie of the same name; this is a collection of songs commenting on the condition of African Americans. Curtis' distinct falsetto gives a soul sound the the R&B he included on this album. He uses a punchy horn section and rhythmic varieties to give his song s rich texture. This is an incredible album this is a central element of the sound of 70s popular music.
theres a reason it outsold the movie 4.6/5
Thoughts before listening: Classic 70s funk/soul album that I have never listened to before. This makes all the best album lists and I'm sure I will recognize a few songs, but this has just never been something that I sought out to listen to. I am glad this album came up today so I finally get a chance to hear it. In general I really enjoy 70s funk so I'm sure this will be great. Review: "Pusherman", "Freddie's Dead", and the title track are enough to make this album an all time classic, but this whole thing is great. 5-stars
Smooth as it should be. Curtis Mayfield is not only a great texter but also writer of music. You can hear it in every track but Beaton Freddie's dead.
Superfly is super cool!
simpelthen bare et af de bedste soundtracks nogensinde. Wall to wall bangers. Så filmen i ØFP sidste år, den er fed!
Perfekt produktion, ekstremt catchy, fyldt med grooves man har hørt før. Gav mig lyst til at begynde at producere hiphop
Fantastic!
One of the best movie soundtracks. It’s just so energetic and fun to listen to. Very good!
I've had this one on my phone as part of my standard listening selection for close to a decade
This was fucking incredible.
So good.
Bardzo dobra muzyka. Z prawdziwą duszą. Źródło wielu sampli hip-hopowych, nawet polskich. 5/5
3/25/24. Amazing album, very soulful and meaningful lyrics. Sometimes you fall too deep into the groove that you forget the message behind the songs, but Curtis' voice keeps you locked in.
Smooth, but with a serious message. Doesn't sound like (just) a soundtrack, but was also probably the perfect accompaniment for the film. I love his voice, and the songs are so good, it just has to score 5.
never watched superfly but goddamn
This might be one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. It stands strong on its own as a concept album as well. I'm blown away. ::shakes fist at that other \"soundtrack without a movie\" album::
One of the best albums of all time. Smooth like butter baby!
I have never felt cooler
Loved the song when it came out, my innocent self didn’t really know what it was all about until a few years after. Still grooving to it today along with most of the rest of the album. Curtis was genius.
So funking good. Classic
One of the best and most cohesive soundtracks of its time. It wasn't because of internet influence that several songs from it got airplay. It was just plain good music. Give Me Your Love should have gotten the play that Superfly and Freddy's Dead did on the radio but it did get it in my house.
Always puts me in a good mood- love this album!
Stone Cold Classic, all killer, no filler
Fabulous album
Super Fly" is the third studio album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield and was released as a soundtrack of the Blaxploitation film of the same name. It is considered pioneering along with Marvin Gaye's "What Goin' On" for the soul concept album. The lyrics are socially aware addressing poverty and drug abuse. The film itself was more ambiguous in its stance towards drugs. Commercially, the album held the #1 spot on the US charts for four weeks. Critically, it was lauded by critics and considered Mayfield's creative breakthrough. In 2019, it was put in to National Recording Registry for its artistc significance. "Lttle Child Runnin' Wild" opens the album. Organ, percussion, strings, horns, bass. There is a lot instrumentation in these songs. Big production. Right off the bat, he describes Ghetto life and drug addiction. The percussion the bass, the guitar and you know the song, it's "Pusherman." Great wah-wah and scratching guitars. Told from the point of view of tge drug dealer. Not all drug dealer lives end well and we find that out in "Freddie's Dead." Horns, wah-wah guitar, swelling synths and horns. Lots going on. Ohh, and we get the flute and a flute outro..that made my day. Curtis' excellent falsetto carries "Nothing on Me (Cocaine Song)." This is easy listening, has a light groove and is positive; "My life's got a natural high, that man can't put no thing on me." The crawling bass, the percussion, the hi-hat, the horns and that groovy guitar and we're off with the album closer "Superfly." The life of a drug dealer. "The only game you know is do or die." This is a great, great album. Curtis' voice is just silky smooth. Each of these songs have incredible instrumental detail; it would be worthwhile just listening to all the instruments and their placements. Tremendous production. Some of the songs are big and fit perfectly in a film (i.e. cinematic). Curtis' lyrics are direct about what's he's talking about. This didn't sound too aged to me. An album that everyone needs to own and listen to.
a flavorful and groovy soul soundtrack. mayfield's melodic voice goes hand in hand with the super duper smooth instrumentation... like this is peak early 1970s soul, and it's so, so... good. like this isn't just smooth soul, this is SEXY soul music. will definitely be checking out more of this guy in the future!
Classic!!! Must have in my collection!!!
I've never heard of the film Superfly. But good lord has this album made me want to watch it.
Funky
Possibly my favorite soul/funk album ever. Perfect in almost every aspect.
Wow. Never heard anything by Curtis Mayfield (or that I'm aware of, at least), but this was amazing from beginning to end. Beautiful production and orchestral arrangements. Favourite tracks: honestly, the whole thing.
Curtis Mayfield's voice is delightful, and this album is very good. It's an interesting concept album with some very well written songs that are underlined by some soulful singing, powerful horns, and overall well executed music. I'm familiar with the music from the movie and occasional radio plays, but it was cool to see how extremely well it held up all on its own. Highlight tracks - Little Child Runnin Wild, Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Superfly.
Let's fucking gooooooo. Gorgeous instrumentation, certified boppers on here, Mayfield's voice is golden.
1. 4.9 2. 4.9 3. 4.9 4. 4.7 5. 4.4 6. 4.8 7. 4.7 8. 4 9. 4.9
1+1. я на ямайке. полгода как уволилась, у меня желтый форд, из одежды только шорты и футболки. кожа на руках уже облезла, я работаю где-то на пристани и владею маленькой лодкой. и мне хорошо.
A true American classic. You can hear the grooves and beats that have been used in modern hiphop. Lots of fun.
Nice voice, good music, great album.
Damn, this is a great album! The instrumentation, but also the vocals, the subject matter. The Deluxe edition also has some gems on it. I really liked Shaft, but this one has the leg up, standing the test of the time and having even greater influence. It's a 4.5 at least.
Hell yeah.
This album is as smooth as it gets. I expect nothing less from Curtis Mayfield
It’s strange to have such sadness sound so amazing, but if that’s what it’s all about then this is it.
Loved it. It sounds consistently as a single project while proposing something new and attractive in each song. Definitely going to save it for further listening. 10/10.
Surprisingly good.
Dig the funky vibes and soulful singing. Great use of bongos on the opening tracks.
I want to walk down the street in a pimp suit to this album.
obviously so good
its pretty good
What a vibe
I had never listens to this music before but it was good!! Fun to drive to.
Listened to this while playing The Loop. I lost. I bought this album back when I was in college. I liked it back then, but I looooved it all these years later. So many great songs. I still sing "I'm your pusher man" to my partner every now and then. I love the emotional trajectory of this album as well as its sociopolitical commentary. Timeless.
Fantastic period piece, relevant today, more than 50 years on. Rest in peace, Curtis. Thanks for taking me back to the 70’s and for helping me see connections within today’s communities.
Dat some funky sheet!
Ciekawa soulowa kompozycja, chyba pierwszy album soulowy w moim życiu(nie wiedziałam że to istnieje). Po przesłuchaniu jestem miło zaskoczona, bo bardzo mnie uspokoiło. Pasuje mi to do jakiś tanecznych stylów latynoskich.
A classic
Great album
I loved this album. Makes me wanna be on a stakeout or drop kick a jive turkey. I loved the song no thing on me (cocaine song) that just felt like black boy you with cocaine. In the words of Rick James cocaine is one hell of a drug
Not bad, composition is better than I expected. Very listenable
I felt like I wasnt cool enough to listen to this album.
One of the best soundtracks. Heater after heater after heater
Awsom
Simply brilliant
So good.
This is so good. Curtis Mayfield basically invented his own sound once he went solo and this record is maybe his strongest effort. The subject matter is a perfect marriage with Mayfield’s lush orchestrations, which were already cinematic on his earlier solo records.
Immaculate rhythm, hence why Curtis Mayfield sits in the R&B/Soul genres. Such an amazing use of instruments and composition. i feel groovy and sexy whenever i listen to his sound. I love how he creates such a lively, almost suspenseful, luxurious atmosphere. like following the tale of an international spy- but actually an undercover drug dealer.
Bangers and very catchy
Magical
Funky as hell, blaxplotation at it's best. Pusherman and Superfly are two of my favourite tracks of all time.
IM YOUR pushermaaaan
I liked it a lot, very groovy. Cool soundtrack for a movie
Just a lovely listen from front to back. I could listen to this any time, any place.
A wonderfully lush and dense soundscape of classic soul that's as good as it's reputation says it is, and it's reputation is VERY good.
Super funky. I prefer this blaxploitation soundtrack to Shaft - much more of a complete album rather than film score. Big, proper songs like Superfly, Pusherman, Freddie's Dead, Give Me Your Love and the unexpected earworm that is No Thing On Me. Concisely completed within 40 minutes. Excellent.
FUNKY FRESH
This album is awesome. I already knew some of the songs, and I’m somewhat familiar with Curtis Mayfield already. I enjoyed listening to the rest of the record. The grooves are sharp, the hooks sound great, and Mayfields voice is fantastic.
Great, need to watch the film
The funk/soul brother, check it out now
Fantastic
What a great album, man. I wasn't expecting there to be any movie soundtracks on this list, but if there's any movie soundtrack that deserves to be on this list, Superfly is a strong pick. Even when looking at this album on its own, it still tells somewhat of a story and serves as a concept album of sorts about drug abuse. Despite the subject material, this album is very funky, and I like that. Curtis's singing is quite good and works well with the songs. I think the instrumental songs added quite a bit to the album's concept to really make you understand what's going on in the story better. The pacing works wonders for this as well. Overall, this is a great album with a great concept that manages to stand out as both a great accompaniment to a movie that I might want to watch in the future, and an amazing standalone concept album. 5/5.
Maybe the best produced album of all time.
Funk at its best! And the album ends with Superfly? Perfect.
Curtis Mayfield should be a household name and incredibly rich. This is a great album
"I've met many people over the years and, in my opinion, I've found that people are the same everywhere. They had the same fears, shed similar tears, die in so many years. The oppressed seem to have suffered the most in every continent, coast to coast. Now our lives are in the hands of the Pusherman. We break it all down in hopes that you might understand how to protect yourself. Don't make no profit for The Man." Superfly is a curious beast. In being the soundtrack of a decaying Harlem teeming with pimps and drug dealers and all around corruption, it lays itself bare as a nebulous statement on the happenings that it's structured on. However, it doesn't negate the greatness that is contained there. Curtis Mayfield was already a journeyman by the time of its release and Superfly was the crystallization of that being, forevermore becoming defined by the slinking bass line and snappy percussion and blaring horns and wah-wah guitar and perfectly placed string arrangements. It helps that he possessed a velvety voice that was never disagreeable, even if the lyrics in the song said otherwise. Blaxploitation and the ever-changing sounds of R&B/Soul were a match made in heaven in the 70s and Superfly was a example of that.
Incredible listen. 5/5
Come on now
This album rules.
Simply the greatest original soundtrack album of all time. There is not a dud on the whole disk. We all know the singles: Freddy's Dead, and Superfly. The rest of the tracks deserve a bit of attention too. Pusherman, Eddie You Should Have Known Better, Little Child.... Listen to it now.
Кайфовые треки
Real groovy. Would listen again.
This album is so beautifully made with infectious grooves! The lyrics here are all amazing too about drugs and drug addiction! Curtis Mayfield's voice is also very heavenly here.
Best song - Little Child Runnin' Wild
Solid album. This type of funk is very enjoyable. A classic of the genre.
Very good. Clear how it inspired the music of it's time as well as subsequently.
A wonderful surprise. Where to start - so many layers. I think I’ll be finding things on the numerous listens to come. Funky, soulful and then some. A great example of how to use an orchestra.
Really enjoyed this, so much that I listened to it multiple times. It has that 70's funk feel to every track which, as someone born in 1970, is very nostalgic and evokes a lot of memories.
little child running wild, give me your love, eddie you should know better, no thing on me, think (smooth)
Sounds very much like the period it was created in- in all the best ways. It's funky, refreshing, and fun listening to that showcases the musical talent involved, especially with the use of so many different sounds
Title track is outstanding, full of soul, an easy listen
This is an easy 5 All timer for me. Grew up on it, love those swirling strings and horn arrangements under Mayfield's falsetto. He saves the best for last. This soundtrack and Across 110th St are unimpeachable funk records.
Never heard this in full before but was blown away. The production and arrangements are fantastic. The songs are interesting and seem to capture a particular moment in time well. I enjoyed the grooves and how Curtis Mayfeild knew when to just let a song breather. The guitar playing on “Think” was really tasteful.
This is one of the greatest soundtrack albums ever made, if not the best. Absolutely my favorite. This is really everything a great soundtrack should be, and it's an outstanding album all on it own. Curtis Mayfield could have phoned this one in and collected the paycheck, but he is on fire creatively here. He has crafted rich, nuanced arrangements that are so much smarter than the film he made them for, but he also never loses sight of the fact that a soundtrack needs to be entertaining. Spicy, funky and intense, the songs reveal the world of the film, with soulful vocals and a side of sly social commentary. The result is a powerful album with a message that transcends its original purpose, one of the finest albums of its genre and its time. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Little Child Runnin' Wild, Pusherman, Superfly, Freddie's Dead, Give Me Your Love (Love Song), Junkie Chase, Eddie You Should Know Better, No Thing on Me (Cocaine Song), Think
Love getting albums I own on record. Just put it on while making Friday dinner and jam along. Superb record from one of Soul's biggest artist.
Great album! I've always been aware of CM, but never actually listened to much. This album was amazing from start to finish, really loved the drums and bass tone.
CLASSIC!
Know it, love it. Utter banger from beginning to end (Love the movie too). Listened to it 3 times in a row because if I had a complaint about this album... Not long enough. Easy 5.
Smooth sailing, not what I usually listen to but this is great!
Wow
It's a funk masterpiece. Just layers and layers to unpack and enjoy.
Sooooo fun and groovy. Great listening
This made me nostalgic for areas of the city that I wouldn't, and shouldn't, go into for any amount of money. This was a very chill album.
A real vibe. The fact the this is a soundtrack is crazy, as it doesn’t feel like it requires context to another medium (a film). Super tight production and A+ grooves.
Great album. Love the strings and percussion. Makes me want to see the movie.
Curtis is sick. His voice is so cool and his records have such a unique sound with the strings and horns. Pusher man and Freddie’s dead are iconic.
This album should be a textbook on how to write funk. The craft on display here is among the best of all time. Not only is Mayfield's voice incredibly smooth and buttery, but the instrumentation and the mixing is next level. I'll be listening to this one again just so I can focus on the drums and bass. It's layer after layer of depth while still sounding simplistic and tight.
Mayfield’s masterclass in funk contains more soul and cinematic vision than even the Blaxploitation film it’s designed to complement.
Omg so great. The movie is fantastic, too.
Incredibly groovy, incredibly tasteful, and incredibly fun. This album stands out for its historical and cultural impact on exploitation films of the 1970s. I feel like a lot of music in this style is ultimately trying to match this sound and style
Never heard this before and wow what a masterpiece. I've heard Junkie Chase a million times because it's been copied. Now I know where it originally started. Freddie's Dead and Little Child Runnin' Wild are incredible songs lyrically, and the way the strings meld so smoothly against the backbeat of these songs is absolutely beautiful.
Wonderful sound, that's what i love 70s for
Great!
I recognized some of the things. Loved the funky vibe!
Quite possibly both the greatest original movie soundtrack of all time and a top 10 soul album of all time.
So good
Good tunes!!!
Another album. Pusher man is my favorite.
This is pure gold
super fly
Super funky, very catchy, definitely sad.
so much style. awesome performances, little sugary details, you can just soak in the psychedelic soul bath
5/5. Not a bad song on this one, even the instrumentals are great. Although I don’t entirely agree with the message, the passion Mayfield sings with makes me feel for him. All the songs flow so smoothly with each other, a classic in its own right. Wild that it’s a soundtrack.
Hot damn smooth n funky
So much better than awesome. And, I'll say it, so much better than Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". That's the hill I'm willing to die on.
Super and indeed fly.
superfly guy says hi hi hi
This is masterful. Not the sort of thing I normally listen to but I know enough to realise greatness when I hear it. This album has it all- the beats, the groove and the lyrics are cutting.
Best soundtrack album ever? Possibly. Love Curtis, love the laid back funkiness of this, but it still has a hard spine of commentary throughout. A stone-cold classic any way you look at / listen to it.
