Album Summary
Ill Communication is the fourth studio album by American hip-hop group Beastie Boys, released by Grand Royal Records on May 31, 1994. Co-produced by Beastie Boys and Mario Caldato, Jr., it is among the band's most varied releases, drawing from hip hop, punk rock, jazz, and funk, and continues their trend away from sampling and towards live instruments, which began with their previous release, Check Your Head (1992). The album features musical contributions from Money Mark, Eric Bobo and Amery "AWOL" Smith, and vocal contributions from Q-Tip and Biz Markie. Beastie Boys were influenced by Miles Davis' jazz rock albums On the Corner (1972) and Agharta (1975) while recording Ill Communication. The album became the band's second number-one album on the US Billboard 200 chart and their second triple platinum album. It was supported by the single "Sabotage", which was accompanied by a music video directed by Spike Jonze that parodied 1970s cop shows.

HELLO BEAUTIFUL WORLD Didn't know beastie boys had so much range, it was neat to listen to a whole album by them, my main experience up until now has been listening to a few favorite tracks, I like how much they play around on this one. They get a few points docked for being a nearly one hour album, but at least we had the whole weekend to go thru it. Overall I've just always really liked their sound, I like how it feels like they are tossing around the musical phrases in a very natural way, I like their sound effects and samples. If this had been a tighter album it might have been a five for me but it felt like partway through I always just get lost. But if they didn't have that extra time to meander and experiment they wouldn't be doing half of the fun things that they do on this album. Likelihood that the members of this band lezzed out IMO: 4/5 I want it to be real, they have good chemistry, I would read fic about these guys
Pre-listening: Hopefully, it’s better than Paul’s Boutique. Best: Sabotage Runner-up: Flute Loop Third: Alright Hear This Post-listening: There is a fine line between liking and loving the Beastie Boys… I’m realizing I’m on the liking side. This album is fun and has some bangers, but their rapping style does get repetitive. There is a lot more variety in this album than there was in Paul’s with songs like Sabotage, The Update and Flute Loop. I listened to it during a hard-run and truly almost felt like I was having a heart attack during Heart Attack Man. More to take away than Paul’s but still just a like. Rating: 7/10 Stars: 3/5
3.5
Definitly a different time, very mixed impressions. Some very good songs and some that just didn't click with me.
Very chill to listen to, with a bit of funk in the hip-hop
This album is spectacular, and feels uniquely 90’s NYC. If there is one album that proves that rap and hip hop are different, this is it. Great the whole way through and is consistent, love the array of sounds and the experimentation. Fav Tracks: Sure Shot, Sabotage, Get it Together, All Right Hear This, Do It
A lot to unpack here. A bit dense but a really cool album that shows just how creative they were.
Beastie Boys are always a good time. Sabotage is a classic hit. Beyond that this album is wonderfully varied, a little punk and little jazz, a lot of great flow. 3.5/5
Love it! It’s amazing oldschool HipHop. Plus the drums are super nice.
Not my preferred type of music and the album started very predictably I thought. However from Sabotage on there seemed to be a shift in style resulting in a more enjoyable listen for me than I ever would have imagined. Would listen to again.
This slaps!
Have been WAITING for this one (not really I've been super inactive but I was excited for it). I love flute loop
I'm at a loss for words with this one. it's just a masterpiece. my dad uploaded this on my mp3 player in late elementary/middle school and it definitely shaped my taste. punk, jazz, hip hop executed at the highest level. the whole record is absolutely killer but never ever takes itself too seriously. heart attack man one of my favorite songs ever. thank you
Funky shit, raznovrsno, inovativno i utjecajno. A nešto nije za mene. Možda ću jednog dana skontati to nešto zbog čega su oni genijalni pa će prelomiti.
Beasties are five stars. Just amazing and never miss. Such an eclectic mix on this album and proving why they are among the best to ever do it.
Ill Comunication broke up the whole world on May 31. The year was none other than 1994, the same year that saw Kurt Cobain die and the Houston Rockets be crowned as NBA Champions. There should be no surprise the relationship between NBA and hip hop to anybody, a connection that stills lives for this day. But with this record the Beastie boys managed to put hip hop music in a place where it never has been. With an astonishing range of subgenres like hip hop, jazz, funk, and even Punk Rock, the trio elevated their status moving forward from sampling to live instruments something that started with their previous record, Check Your Head. The Album became their second number one in US Billboard 200 and with a prolific single like "Sabotage" that boosted their popularity thanks to his music video and another one like "Sure Shot" with the iconic flute intro, The Beastie Boys earned a spot in music history. "Tough Guy" and "Heart Attacked Man" also showed the roots in hardcore punk the trio used to have at their very beginning and with a solid number three on the best 50 albums of 1994 by NME, this one is a record you got to listen to. This one is after all, A critical moment for the blend of hip hop and alternative music that influenced many of the rappers and bands you hear today. An album that grew up from generation to generation,
Although sensational and powerful, just not for me
Would give 4.5 if I could. I have not listen to this album in a minute and forgot how good it was.
Very fun. Did not expect there to be random groovy instrumental tracks. Fav tracks: Sure Shot, Do it, Sabrosa
Awesome. Rap punk smooth jazz... tibetan buddhist... rock...hip hop. Just great.
3.5/5 but I’d round up to four. I was very surprised how much I liked this. Very solid early hip hop with a notable punk tinge to it that I really connect with. I found myself really liking the instrumental (I hesitate to say introspective) dub like parts. The beats are fun, and the vocals are always energetic. Solid album experience overall.
one song, Sabotage. that is the best… the video on MTV is still a classic. i dont like rap…. rap is crap.
No one does it like the Beasties. This album is a combination of short, raw, energetic rap tracks, jazzy interludes, random punk songs and whatever else the band decides to do. The rap songs are raw and rugged, but also catchy, fun and full of personality, seems like they never run out of new ideas. The sampling is wonderful on songs like Sure Shot or Flute Loop. Root Down has a sick bassline to it. Sabotage is one of the best fusions of rap and rock out there and Get it Together has this sick psychedelic feel to it that makes the whole song so surreal. All the jazz and funk cuts are really phenomenal and somehow work very well in the context of the album. My biggest complain is that some of the songs feel way too lo-fi and roughly mixed, doesn't always appeal to me.
Wasn't expecting much but it turned out to be good. Went on too long.
What I like, I like, but a lot of it left me cold then and leaves me cold still.
I enjoyed the glimpses into their punk past, along with the usual Beastie cacophony.
im sorry women - MCA
A high energy album which makes you want to move. Also an interesting blend of jazzy smooth songs to give you time to regroup.
The best
Meh not for me but I get it One more star for Sabotage
Fantastic!
Oh my god that's the funky shit! It's fun recognising certain samples from this album that I've heard in other stuff before. Also just a fun album. 8/10
Never really listened to hip hop, it's the sound of the 90s
Umm... the album is not something that I would listen to again. The songs on this album are not catchy and unmemorable. A lot of weird screeching with many of the songs. Giving it a .5 purely because of Sabotage being a part of this album.
Hate this shit
The middle of their 3 album flawless streak.
I see Beasties, I give 5.
The good songs are some of the best in the Beasties rhymefolio, but its too uneven and way too long.
A lot of noodle-y beats with no lyrics and half finished songs. But the good stuff is good!
Overall: Very jazzy, rock and roll, and experimental It was definitely an experience, the album is SO long tho The beats are TIGHT as hell tho ngl
It's 3.5
obviously expected to hate this, actually did not. it's kinda crazy all the different musical styles, the instrumental tracks are actually a little bit listenable. Buddhist stuff? Jazz? ok. found myself enjoying more than expected. would i listen again? absolutely not
How is it possible to mix rap, hip hop, jazz, rock and so much more in one album and still be the best album I've heard ???
Of the Beastie Boys albums I've listened to here along the years, this one was my favourite. I haven't generally been a fan, and I'm not overly fond of this one, but there was something about its instrumentation and maturity that I appreciated over the others.
Sure Shot Sabotage Flute Loop

Great Album
Holds a special place for me, as “Sabotage” was the first Beastie Boys song I knew as a kid, and “Get It Together” came into my life when I was getting into Tribe and totally changed my perception of these guys. Anyone who only knows them for the frat rap of Licensed to Ill or the rap-rock of “Sabotage” is only getting a small piece of the story - these dudes were true rap pioneers. You don’t end up on the cover of Midnight Marauders otherwise. This is them at the height of their powers, fully eschewing any concept of genre. Rap, rock, punk, jazz, funk, it’s all fair game. My second favorite Beastie Boys album.
I can’t stand Beastie Boys, it is just not for me. I don’t get the vocals and the vibe.
Kanonplate og formativ for mi musikkinteresse. Her oppdaga eg Beastie Boys.
For variert for sitt eget beste.
FUN! Great voice and quality recording. 3.1
I’d give it 0 if I could
Another entry in the 1001 rap and electronica and a few other albums you need to hear before you die. I could get on board with a few songs and was surprised at the number of instrumentals. 2.5/5
veel herrie, luitsterd niet lekker. Paar nummers zijn wel aardig
liked it more than i thought i would
it was best when they weren’t singing
3.05
What can I say about such an iconic album?
-Tracks longer than 3:59: One, but I’ll allow it. -Long tracks interesting or special: It has Q-Tip, so yes. -Album shorter than 58 minutes: Just a bit -Will listen to album again: 100% Overall: I. Love. This. Album. It came out when I was in college and it was on repeat. I particularly love Flute Loop. Instrumentals can be blah or add bloat, but the ones on here are great. Much of source material for the beats is also dope. Check out the original Root Down by Jimmy Smith.
Amazing but could have chopped a few of the instrumentals in the second half to make it a full classic
Good Stuff ! Not a big fan but they do what they do very well !
Absolutely enjoyable fusion of boom-bap rap, jazz, punk rock, and funk. The Beastie Boys were at the peak of their powers on this one. Every song had great energy and their rhymes were substantial. Very fun listen!
4/10
6/10 - Beastie Boys doing their thing, a bit long though and could be cut short
Made me want to wear my cap backwards and spray paint some graffiti. Scrapes a 3.
V. Good
Sick album!
Ive gotta be in the mood for Beastie Boys usually but this is good. Songs dont stay for too long. Samples good. The sheep in particular Q Tip a nice collab More funkiness than i expected Root Down into Sabotage breaks things up in an great way 3.5
The Beasties are just awesome. An incredibly cool sound with the real instruments coming into such chaotic hut super solid and tons of fun album, but after Eguene Lament's it begins to drag more and more - and I love their instrumntals. But who cares, Beasties were "effortlessly" cool even when they rhymed 'bout religious awakening.
They’re such an interesting mix of like rock and hip hop
3/10 My third (and final) Beastie Boys album of this project, and my second in just 5 days. If there's one thing I've discovered while doing this project, it's that I absolutely loathe music by this band. It is universally derivative, immature, culturally appropriative, and all around trash. This album is no different: in the tracks they rap on they all sound like they're wannabe gangstas. They are not. They're suburban white boys. This album goes in an interesting (?) direction with a number of instrumental tracks - which make me want to raise the album rating - but it's too little, too late. This band is awful.
I know they still have their many fans, but the Beastie Boys always seemed to me more like a parody than an actual band: kind of a rap version of Spinal Tap. I wish I had just listened to a Spinal Tap album instead of this.
Being an eighties kid, I grew up with The Beastie Boys. Bought their first album on tape and still have it somewhere. But after that, I could never get back into them. I liked the songs (and videos) that I’d see on MTV, but never felt the desire to buy another album. Trying to listen to an album in one sitting is too much for me. I love them in small doses.
I usually prefer lyrics I can sing along with and this album had some but not many. I still found myself bumping my shoulders, rocking my head, and tapping my foot. Its like I couldn't even control my reaction. I liked this far better then license to ill.
not a lot of winners on here for me. Didn't care for the jam band aspect of a lot of the album. I love Sabotage and call me basic but the only other one I cared for was when Q-Tip showed up. High 2
1994 - 4th album - 59:37 - well-received - Hip-hop/punk/rock/jazz/funk, listened to Miles Davis; hip hop + hardcore; Mike D, Ad-rock, MCA. Sure Shot (jazz flute solo sample; "Come correct"), Sabotage, Root Down (funk), Get It Together, Flute Loop (lol). this felt really long and meandery. lost focus after Flute Loop.
Beasties are always good for giving you a few things you wouldn't expect. While I find much of their stuff pretty grating, their explorations with beats, jazz, etc. are the real standouts.
This is the only Beastie Boys album I physically own, mainly for Sabotage, which is undeniable. Sure Shot and Root Down are great too but it is a little bit front-loaded with the second half of the album not as strong. I admire the diverse range of genres they play with, but at the same time, the punk songs -Sabotage aside- don't really work. Still if you don't enjoy this record, I feel a little bit sad.
The hook from Sure Shot is one of the best to have ever happened in Hip-Hop. It sets the tone in an incredible way. Sabotage goes hard as hell too.
uhhhhh... what... what genre was that..? what... what was any of that..? i'm so confused... my ears kinda hurt... but fair enough i guess..?
A bit of everything! A lot more versatility than I realised the Beastie Boys had. Doesn't really fall flat at any point, but feels like a collection of tracks rather than one cohesive album.
thought it seid 3 communication at first lol its aight
Non-stop sonic assault (complementary) that only flags a bit at the end, but for the most part, this is the Beasties' best album, incorporating hardcore, funk and of course hip-hop into a dense collage. It's terrific.
Sabotage creative genius. This iteration of Beastie Boys elevated them from party rap novelty of License to I'll days
Klassiker.
energetic but felt too long
really not for me, so annoying. i really only could listen to the songs with no singing, just instrumentals
Rap and hip-hop aren't usually my thing. I like the odd track here and there, but sitting through a whole album from start to finish usually leaves me losing interest. On paper, a 20-track release running over an hour would seem bound to suffer the same fate. Far from it. "Ill Communication" avoids this by serving up an eclectic mix of styles across its running order. The blend of instrumentals, funk and sudden bursts of hardcore punk breaks things up. Not all of it works and I wouldn't personally state that this is an essential album but there are number of essential tracks on the album, one of which is 'Sabotage' - a defining track of the 1990s. 1 "Sure Shot" (5/5) 2 "Tough Guy" (3/5) 3 "B-Boys Makin' with the Freak Freak" (4/5) 4 "Bobo on the Corner" (4/5) 5 "Root Down" (3/5) 6 "Sabotage" (5/5) 7 "Get It Together" (featuring Q-Tip) (5/5) 8 "Sabrosa" (4/5) 9 "The Update" (3/5) 10 "Futterman's Rule" (5/5) 11 "Alright Hear This" (3/5) 12 "Eugene's Lament" (4/5) 13 "Flute Loop" (4/5) 14 "Do It" (featuring Biz Markie) (4/5) 15 "Ricky's Theme" (3/5) 16 "Heart Attack Man" (3/5) 17 "The Scoop" (4/5) 18 "Shambala" (3/5) 19 "Bodhisattva Vow" (3/5) 20 "Transitions" (3/5) Total - 75 Average - 3.8 434/1001 230/434 albums reviewed were new to me.
I love classical music
i love all the mixes of genres on this one. the hardcore trax and funky songs.. damn that track with qtip is the besssst
A whole bunch of distortion, and a whole lot of nothing.
Not even in my top 3 Beastie Boys albums but still five stars.
2.5 stars It opens strong with “Sure Shot” there’s a lot of promise. But really outside of that and “Sabotage,” it was a lot of filler that did not leave me feeling like I missed out all of these years later. It was enjoyable enough to sit through, but it’s just because they’re good at what they do. Didn’t really need the full band rock stuff.
