1001 Albums Summary

I’m not always the biggest fan of concept albums and while I respect it, this was still the case here. Sonically I love Pink Floyd and this was no exception, but it was definitely way too long for my tastes. I started getting bored by the end. Overall I’d say 3.5/5.

A well executed album. The harmonies, the orchestration are sweeping. Karen’s vocals and drumming are gorgeous. 4/5

Johnny Cash is a masterful storyteller. June’s addition was great. Overall, I’m not the biggest fan of live albums, especially with a lot of crowd noise and/or interruptions. That took me out of it quite a bit. A couple of the tracks really didn’t work for me either. 3.5/5

This was an unexpected gem for me. I really enjoyed this jazzy, funk soul album. A great groove. 4.5/5

The fact that this is 2 hours long and I never got bored listening to it says a lot. 4/5

Not my favorite album by The Cure, but still solid. I love its almost haunting, predatory feel. It always made me think of vampires for some reason. 4/5

This was fine. A pretty standard glam rock album. Nothing about it really stood out in any way. 3/5

When this started I thought I would live, I was annoyed and ready to turn it off by track 3. I pushed through and though I can say it had some nice grooves, I can’t say I liked much else about it. 2/5

Bowie’s music has always been a bit hit or miss for me, but this one absolutely hit. I loved everything about this album. 5/5

Classic bluesy rock. Some of the transitions were a bit jarring. A stand out or two. Overall, I found this good, if not great. 3.5/5

This is a hard one for me to rate. I did enjoy some of it. It was just very inconsistent and clearly had too many drivers. It was trying to be too many things. 2.5/5

I like Deep Purple. This has some great music. It is one of the best live album recordings I have heard. That being said it is way too long and self indulgent. Entirely too many ridiculously long solos. 3/5

I’ve never had much of an opinion on Springsteen. I like some of his songs generally, but this album didn’t work for me. I didn’t care for it vocally, none of the songs, other than Born to Run, felt particularly strong either. I did like the sax. 3/5

I loved this. This is music guaranteed to put me in a good mood. It reminds me of growing up and the music I would listen to with my mom. 5/5

This was 2 halves of what could be a great whole. The ‘concept’ album 1st half was interesting, and had a couple tracks I liked, but felt more like a half formed idea than a fully executed one. The back half was full of banger tracks, but didn’t really go with the first half. 4/5

Decent album. Some good tracks, some okay tracks. I do enjoy the Eagles. 4/5

Missy is a queen. While I didn’t necessarily love this album, I can’t deny that. The beats are great. I had a fun time with it, but it wasn’t really for me. 3.5/5

Not being a big rap/hip-hop listener, I can’t really compare it to much. I thought it wasn’t bad, some of the songs I liked okay, some really not so much. It was okay, but probably wouldn’t listen to it again. 3/5

Musically this was fine. The songs themselves were ok at best. The biggest issue for me was the engineering. Too much panning, it drove me nuts and was painful to listen to at times because of it. Would not listen to again or recommend personally. 2.5/5

I hadn’t heard this Beastie Boys album before. I love the energy Beastie Boys bring. The lyrical witticisms are great. I feel like this is an album that would grow on me the more I listened to it, but on a first listen I felt it was a bit long and tonally one-note. 3.5/5

This was great. Even the odd experimental craziness that was murder mystery worked for me. 5/5

I enjoyed this more than I thought. The music and the grooves were great overall. A few clunkers that I didn’t enjoy but overall a positive experience. 3.5/5

I liked this a lot. I don’t really have much to compare it to, but I can understand the acclaim it has gotten. Some of the songs felt a little long to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. 4/5

This had a lot of things I liked. The music was good. The drums were killer. The songs and vocals for me were just ok. 3/5

I adore Dusty Springfield. Always hits for me. 5/5

I expected to like this more than I did. The hits are great. The rest of the album though I felt was just kind of mid. 3.5/5

Adele is an incredible vocalist. This is a strong album, if not quite as emotionally resonant as her previous. 4/5

This is not my genre usually, but this was good. There was certainly stuff I didn’t particularly like, but the stuff I liked impressed me so much it jumped my rating up. It was cinematic, it was introspective, it was a concept album that was easily understandable and worked. Kendrick is a great lyricist. 4/5

The nostalgia is strong with this one. It still hits. It’s a little more static in it’s sound then later albums. 4.5/5

I enjoyed listening to this. I felt it dragged on a bit long in certain places and I could have done without the 8 min spoken word section. 3.5/5

Musically it’s good, full of driving energy. Unfortunately, beyond the title song, the rest were fairly mediocre if not bad. 3/5

Dark, heavy, emotive. I love that about Reznor and NIN. The mix of Industrial and grungy rock makes it stand out, though on occasion it stood out in a not great way. Still a very solid album. 4/5

This was brand new for me and I kind of loved it. It was melancholy and beautiful and sparse. I couldn’t stop thinking about it over the day. 5/5

I like REM generally. I don’t know if it was just my mood or what, but this album didn’t grab me in any way. It was fine, but nothing stood out and I found myself zoning out and forgetting I was even listening to something. 3.5/5 I guess.

This was painful. I liked the music. Those vocals though…they were like vomit-screaming hopped up on speed. You couldn’t understand the lyrics, maybe thy were decent I have no idea. Plus they seemed almost out of sync with the music itself, like they were playing at 2 different speeds. It made for an extremely long 38 minutes. 2/5 because I did enjoy the music anyway.

Industrial meets cabaret and make it French. This kind of worked for me. 4/5

Yeah I still really am not a fan of big concept albums. This had some good songs I enjoyed and I respect it for what it is, but overall it wasn’t for me. I didn’t care for the overall story and that was a big draw back as well.

It was a perfectly good synth pop album. For the length especially I felt it needed a bit more variation. It was a bit too same sounding. Also I was really not in the mood for it, which also affects my rating. 3.5/5 in a different mood I may like it more.

Really interesting album. A clever mash-up of trip-hop, electronic, jazz, Indian folk with a poignant theme. It doesn’t always completely work for me, but mostly does. I especially loved the middle three of Tides, Nadia, and Immigrant. 4/5

This was bad. It sounded like a whiny, drunk guy poorly rapping about all his troubles over a random drum track setting and constantly a step behind the beat. 1/5

It’s The Beatles. I can not be unbiased about them. While this is not my favorite or their best album, it’s still great. I like the Motown covers too. 5/5

This was interesting. First track and I had an immediate negative reaction, but this was an album that the longer it went on the more I liked it. It had some tracks I didn’t like, a couple I really did. Overall, not too bad. 3/5

I got into this quite a bit. I really dug the grooves and flow to this album. 4/5

Sci-fi-esque ambience that I did not expect to like at all. Honestly, it was pretty good. 3.5/5

While not big with electronic music generally, Radiohead’s take here I kind of enjoyed. It’s not my favorite Radiohead by far, but there is something here that worked for me. 4/5

This was unremarkable. Nothing grabbed me while listening to it and a day later I’m struggling to even remember anything about it. I’ll give it a middling 3/5

I like the band. The music is great. Love me some blues and bluesy rock. That being said this was just way too long. Nobody needs a 22-minute track. Anything just becomes background at that length. 3/5 only because I do still really like the music, even if it’s too long to really engage with.

It has a couple of absolute gems and a lot of middling ok. Freedom ‘90 is of course the standout here. Sadly the rest doesn’t hold up to the same quality. 3/5

Something different I wouldn’t have heard without this list. I thought it was really good. And every song was unique to itself, they didn’t all blend together like I feared they might. 4/5

This was very much not for me. I don’t enjoy this genre much regularly and this was no exception. I wanted to rate it higher, but even the beats and music were rather one-note and not interesting. I didn’t care for the lyrics. And it was entirely too long. 1/5

Catchy, upbeat, pop music. Full of great harmonies. My mom had this on heavy rotation in my house growing up. Solid, good time. 4/5

I dig this afrobeat - jazz album. It was a bit on the long side for my current mood, but was a fun, interesting listen that I’m glad to discover. 4/5

MTV Unplugged was amazing and this was peak. The rawness and vulnerability in Kurt’s performance is unmatched. This was a 5* for me when it came out and I’ve only loved it more on re-listens since. 5/5

I like Neil Young, although I didn’t need 2 in one week. I enjoyed this. His songwriting is always good and this has some of the best songs. 4/5

This is definitely an album of its time…a very 90s ‘playground’esque rap album complete with an entire track of ‘Yo Mama’ jokes. A bit too sophomoric for my tastes, but I did enjoy the jazzy elements infused in the music. 2.5/5

This didn’t hit more adult me the way it did for teenage me and Dexter’s voice bothered me more than it ever has before. Still fun to relisten to though. The hits are still great. Round up to 4/5 for the nostalgia.

A beautifully dark, emotional album. Stripped down and lovely listen. 4.5/5

I appreciated the jazz, funk, soul influences in this. A couple tracks I felt were pretty good, but most of them unfortunately I didn’t like at all. I’m sure I may pick up on more lyrical complexity in further listens, but I didn’t enjoy this enough to want to do that. I found this tedious to listen to and too long. 2/5

Second Nick Cave in a handful of days. This one didn’t work for me. I respect what it is, but for listening enjoyment I found it too long, too slow, and a bit too heavy and dramatic. I struggled to keep my attention on it and not fall asleep frankly. 2.5/5

Even Mr. Kite doesn’t detract enough from this album for me for it to be anything other than 5/5

I don’t remember ever listening to this whole album before, but it is great. Full of bangers. 5/5

A fun listen for 15 minutes. Some of the songs I liked, others I didn’t care for, the lyrics were for the most part a bit too irreverent for how I tend to like my hardcore punk. 3/5

This is one of those bands that I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve heard from them, but never listened to whole albums from before. I did enjoy the atmospheric sound. I enjoy this era of Oort punk quite a bit. Not the best stuff from them I’ve heard, but still enjoyed it. 3.5/5

One of my favorite artists of all time. Even here where you can hear the voice breaking down a bit, still so soulful. Love. 5/5

This one’s a tricky one to rate, because it is essentially 2 different albums packaged together. Speakerboxxx was definitely the stronger of the two in my opinion. Both had their high points, but this was way too long an experience. 3/5 I guess.

Despite not being a big country fan, Dolly is a genre unto herself. The humble earnestness in her voice and her songwriting is special. 4/5

I thought this was fine, but I’m hard pressed to think of much of anything to say about it. Some jazz rock fusion that was nice to listen to, but unremarkable.

I always forget how much I enjoy PSB until I’m listening to them. While this is a little more serious than some of their other stuff I do still quite like it. Some of it is a bit kitschy and it’s not always tonally super interesting, but still a solid listen. I debated between a 3 and 4, so I’ll split and say 3.5/5

Solid Sabbath album. I hadn’t heard this one before. Heavy, sludgy, just what I want from them. 4/5

I enjoy some good 70s prog rock. This does hit that itch. It does start to all blend together a bit especially in the back half. 3/5

It’s fine for some atmospheric background music, but it’s too long to make a good active listen. 2.5/5

Some classic 80s goodness here. Dire Straits has some great songs, some of which are on this album. A few songs I didn’t like or care for here, but Knopfler’s guitar is on point as always. 4/5

I generally like Chicago. This had some great classic Chicago tracks, but overall it was a bit of a slog to get through. The tracks were all generally too long, and the album was for sure too long. Plus Free Form Guitar was just horrible to listen to. 2/5

This one was completely new to me. Pretty standard 90s britpop, but I really enjoyed my time with it. 4/5

It’s a classic RHCP album. The first half is great, but it does drag a bit in the back half. It would be better if it was tightened up a bit, but it’s fine. 3.5/5

I remember I used to really like this album. Listening to it for the first time in many years I was surprised to find myself not really enjoying it. Probably the biggest issue for me was the vocals, I found them very grating. Less surprising to find the lyrics not always holding up. I still enjoyed the music, and the hits still hit though. 3/5

I love Fiona Apple generally, but this album was a bit too experimental for my tastes. It may be one that grows on me with more listens, as it was a bit near the end. So I’ll give it a 3/5.

One of my dad’s all-time favorite records. I can’t not smile listening to this. Smooth, groovy jazz that just hits. 5/5

I’ve generally liked Prince in the past, but this album didn’t do much for me. I found it overly long and quite dull. A few songs I liked, but even there no big stand outs. 2.5/5

I enjoy the addition of non-traditional rock instruments in bands quite a lot and Jethro Tull is the epitome of that. Classic album I groove with. 4/5

This album should not have worked for me. And yet, it strangely really did. It was dark and gloomy at times, trip-hoppy, electronica that despite being repetitive and often felt like it was building to nothing, I can’t stop thinking about it and so I feel like I have to give it a full 5.

This was ok. It blended I tot eh background quite a bit. I hit a moment where I realized I forgot I was even listening to something. When I did pick up lyrics, I found them to be fairly mediocre. 3/5

This felt longer than it was, and by the end I just very ready for it to be over, despite the fact that I did enjoy it. The music, the vocals were quite good. I don’t know. 3.5/5

I’ve never been all that into Arctic Monkeys for some reason. It’s fine. 3/5

While not my genre, I didn’t hate this. I like the flow of that era of rap generally. Still not for me though. 3/5

Randy Newman is a great songwriter. And his voice has always been strangely comforting to me. I hadn’t heard this album before, although I knew some songs. Solid listen. 3.5/5

I was excited to get this one. I have liked Dinosaur Jr. in the past, but this one didn’t quite hit for me. There were things I liked, but always something I didn’t to keep me from loving it. 3/5

I haven’t listened to this since it came out. While I still respect the talent, I found character or not, the ultra violence and misogyny was beyond hard to listen to. 2/5

The beats were ok….The rest…no. Didn’t like the concept, the lyrics, the flow most of the time. Too long. Not a fan. 1.5/5

I struggle with live albums. I could do without all the taking/intro stuff. Too long for my attention span, but the music is good. 3/5

Couldn’t escape this one when it came out. Still some bangers, but some hasn’t aged as well. Good harmonies, a bit too poppy for me right now though. 3.5/5

It would be better as a couple smaller albums, than one big double album. Each section was fine on its own, it was just too much all at once. 3/5

I love CCR’s bluesy, swampy sound. JF is a genius musician. This was a solid, fun album. A couple weaker tracks kept it from a full 5. 4/5

Moody, a bit dark and melancholic. Very cinematic. All things I would expect for a movie score. Encapsulates the vibe quite well, 4/5

I like the Pixies and wasn’t familiar with this album. It was enjoyable. I didn’t really feel a stand out on this listen, but it wasn’t bad by any means. 4/5

Perfect timing on this one because I had been craving some SoaD. I haven’t listened to this album in a long time, it’s not my favorite of theirs but it still rocks. 4/5
