Reviews (page 2 of 14)

This is their best album. Like a lot of 90s albums, it's too long. Despite the wide range of styles. And they're good at all of them. Favorite song: Sabotage

2nd best beastie boys album, couple skips but the instrumental songs are all great and make the album a little lighter which is much appreciated

It's been a long while since I've listened to any Beastie Boys at length, they're usually a band I go to for the hits and that's about it. Always been a fan of their sound, even if it hasn't aged all that well in the last 30 years. I was also surprised by the amount of instrumental tracks on this album, I can't remember if their earlier albums are this loaded with instrumentals. The length is one thing, but I didn't mind it as much as I have with other albums. An easy four, and will come back to it for some classroom background music in the future.

"Alright team, the studio for our new blockbuster movie needs us to finish the soundtrack for the film. We need to come up with a song for when our ragtag group of friends, who are rebelling against the system, come walking out one at a time in slow-motion wearing their new outfits." "Hey boss, I think I got exactly what you need right here." "You son of a bitch that's perfect! Now all we need is a song for when they get in a vehicle at night and begin driving to the city for the final confrontation...." ____________________________________ This album had a lot more variation than I thought it would. The Beastie Boys sound is so distinct with their big hits, but there was so much more going on here. Funky instrumentals, distorted and fast punk, smooth hip-hop, it's all here. It needed it too with the album being an hour long. Not as many hits on here as I was hoping for, but still a good listen.

Easily my favorite Beastie Boys album I've heard

Отличное и разнообразное звучание группы, но минус балл лишь за небольшой перебор филлерных треков

I love Beastie Boys. This isn't my favourite but very decent

Very good Beastie Boys album. High 4* 4/5

While hip hop/rap are not my cup of tea, I can still appreciate it as an art form. The Beastie Boys are famous for this, but they do a great job or creating an amalgamation of hip hop, jazz, punk, alternative, etc. It was definitely a journey. It was enjoyable, and I see it's value.

Variety! Fun! White boi 90’s rage hip hop! Now just add some bloke on guitar called Tom and were really raging

This album is incredibly impactful. While I don’t focus on race, it’s hard to ignore the significance of a group of white rappers from New York making such a mark in the 90s, especially when gangsta rap dominated the scene. The respect they've earned and their continued relevance today is truly impressive. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. The tracks are unique, blending hip-hop, rock, and boom-bap in a way that feels fresh. The Q-Tip feature is a standout, adding an extra layer to the sound. The run of "Root Down," "Sabotage," and "Get It Together" is absolutely amazing, and including "Sabrosa," the instrumental track, makes it even better. The production throughout is top-notch, and while the second half of the album might not hit quite as hard, it’s still a solid 4/5 overall.

this album is like a best friend to me

has sabotage on it

Did you ever eat a bag of party mix? This album is the musical equivalent. Random pieces that don't seem to go together but as a whole are amazing.

I like this album and have never heard it before today. I have to dismiss my preconceived notion that the Beastie Boys are a one trick pony. They can be much more varied. I saw a review on Youtube where a guy said that "I played a couple of songs from this album for my ten year old daughter who said it was awful, terrible. She's now doing well with her foster family." :D

“Sure Shot” is a great intro. Then “Tough Guy” brings the punk blitz of early (and later) Beastie Boys and makes it clear that there’s no telling what to expect on “Ill Communication.” I love “Root Down,” and it makes a great 1-2 punch with “Sabotage.” The latter is the Boys’ most famous song. But I don’t feel like I can fairly evaluate it anymore. It has such deep roots in my psyche that I can’t disconnect from to be objective. I can’t not see that music video play through my head when I listen. But I’ll try… The song deftly weaves the Beastie Boys hip hop and punk leanings. The multiple breaks each work so well to build anticipation and hype. It’s brash and in-your-face, without the crassness and immaturity that plagued “Paul’s Boutique.” It might be peak Beastie Boys? And then “Sabotage” is followed by a Q-Tip feature, which cements “Ill Communication” as an evolution of the Beastie Boys’ style and sound. More variety follows with the instrumental “Sabrosa” and “The Update.” The rest of the album keeps the listener guessing, shifting styles and genres relentlessly in search of… something. I said in an earlier Beastie Boys review that “Ill Communication” was my entry point to the group. I now realize that was a lie. The first 7 tracks on “Ill Communication” was my entry point. I had no recollection of the rest of the album. Perhaps that is because it is so scattershot and without hooks that it doesn’t leave a lasting impression? The second half of the album is diverse and interesting, and points to professional and personal growth for the Beastie Boys, but ultimately fails to make the most of their potential. For me, “To the 5 Boroughs” is underrated, but still their best.

has great songs sabotage, sure shot, the update, flute loop. and all of the instrumentals, they are flawless. all the others are just fillers. it would be an 8-9/10 if all of the filler was removed. 6/10 gonna stick ma dick in mashed potatoes

•A great trip for neurodivergent minds. •Awesome and quite interesting delivery. •One of the coolest covers I’ve seen. •No skips album. •Funky sounds!!! •The cleanest and best audio I’ve heard in quite a while, unmatchable quality.

This is like 3 albums from different genres standing on each other's shoulders underneath a trenchcoat, each style having its place and merit but sort of discombobulated sounding if you're not expecting it. I'm a fan, but this probably isn't even in my top 3 beastie albums. 3.5 rounded down.

Futterman's rule.

No crossover.

Didn't like this one as much as the previous 3 releases from the band. They stayed true to their style, blending hip-hop with differemt genres such as rock, jazz, electronic, metal, punk. The albim sounds similar to RATM a lot of the times. But it seemd more experimental and progressive than the other albums they did. Songs don't progress linearly and there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns with instruments and arrangements. Still, there are some cool songs on here and the music is not bad, it's the crown of their style.

Awesome.

As Jackson would say, good but not my favorite. 2.5 rounded up to 3.

Strangely meditative for a rap album*. I felt very at peace. But it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. I may have to return later with different expectations. *Sabotage excluded.

A record with varied influences providing for a nice mixture of hip-hop sounds. The flow is good, the boys play greatly off eachother. It does lose some steam by the second half.

Beastie boys are great albeit an acquired taste 3-3.5

A huge variety here, none of it bad, but it feels like the vast array of styles and genres doesn't really mesh well.

Never a huge Beasties guy, this didn't change that. Sure Shot and Sabotage are great songs though.

Begin is leuk Daarna wordt het wat minder Ik heb geen idee wat ze zeggen

The punk moments work for me, but alas, the jazz and rap do not so much. Still. Big points for being interesting and diverse and trying something new.

1 song I really liked but on average not really my cup of tea

3.5/5 or higher. Not the first time I listen to a Beastie Boys album but the first time I do enjoy it.

Definitely better than Paul's Boutique. Some bangers, some crazies, some hip hop, some punk, overall you can listen to it lol

This was fine, but I didn't hear anything here that would bring it above 3 stars.

Just all sounds the same…I do like Sabotage though.

Objectively good, but not my thing (fantastic if you like 90s rap). A few quite good songs on there though.

Just not my cup of tea

Good vibes, fun. Some odd songs that weren't quite my jam.

This album samples lots of jazz and FUNK Then it goes all hardcore PUNK Beastie Boys rap in a group of THREE Pretty corny now, but it works for ME ok I'll stop. This album is good when it's a hip hop album - the BB's and guests' verses are all at a really consistently high level, with inventive beats and sampling, and distinctive cadence/flow. The punk stuff is like C-tier Minor Threat, the jazz stuff is kind of pointless. Favorites: Sabotage, Update, Get it Together, Do It

i dont really fw this, thank god it has instrumental tracks

I want to like the Beastie Boys so badly… but I simply cannot.

2 star. Never really been a fan of the Beastie Boys and this album confirmed that bias. There were a couple songs that I liked, but for the most part the album sounded like being in a crowded room. They kinda remind me of rage in a way, but I think rage is better across the board. Other than sure shot, the main song I liked was the one with the Q Tip feature. 2 stars.

This is the third Beastie Boys album from this list so far. I hated the other two - how about this one? Boring. Like the others.

liked songs: Bobo On The Corner, the instrumental parts of Root Down, Sabrosa, Futterman's Rule I CAN'T STAND IT But for real, I find the Beastie Boys' rapping nearly intolerable. I genuinely hate their voices. Without a doubt they make some objectively good music, but I really just don't like this. The instrumental jazz/funk rock tracks carry this album to a higher rating for me. Heart Attack Man is the exception - it's a great stupid song (just not quite as good as Bugs by Pearl Jam). 2.5

Not for me - I tried, I really did, but I think I just don't get The Beastie Boys. Did I have to live through that time period or something? Either way: Q-Tip my beloved!! One of the highlights on the album. The enormity and diversity of it all, especially how wild and cool the beats are, is actually pretty cool, and I do love the jazzy interludes. It's just the vocals, especially that blown-out style and that pitch, that I can't stand myself. I see why people like this, but I guess I just must not like fun. Fav tracks: B-Boys Makin' With The Freak Freak, Get it Together, Sabrosa, Futterman's Rule.

This wasn’t quite as awful as I expected it to be, but it was close.

God, I can’t stand the Beastie Boys. -Get it Together isn’t so bad, but I think it’s because someone else is on the track. -Sabrosa is funky, I dig it. I like the music on some of these tracks, but I can’t handle the vocals. This album ain’t for me. 2.5 Stars

Overall I thought this album was pretty good but also had some notable flaws. It was a very mixed bag, which was evident with the tracks from this track list that i did enjoy, the ones I didn’t enjoy and the ones I just felt neutrally or couldn’t make my mind up. There are some really powerful one and some really meh ones. Didn’t quite click with me but I’ll be sure to visit some of his other music after checking out Queen of Denmark.

Interesting funky moments, experimental swanky sounds I'm not used to hearing out of the Beastie Boys. They seem to be in love with using the voice distortion mics though.

No. 214/1001 Sure Shot 3/5 Tough Guy 2/5 B-Boys 2/5 Bobo On The Corner 2/5 Root Down 3/5 Sabotage 2/5 Get It Together 3/5 Sabrosa 3/5 The Update 2/5 Futterman's Rule 3/5 Alright Hear This 2/5 Eugene's Lament 2/5 Flute Loop 3/5 Do It 3/5 Ricky'sTheme 3/5 Heart Attack Man 2/5 The Scoop 2/5 Shambala 2/5 Bodhisattva Vow 2/5 Transitions 3/5 Average: 2,45 I get that this was innovative & cutting edge, but I just didn't enjoy that.

meh except for sabotage

I hated this album. Just liked root down and sabotage and didn't listen de subsequent songs.

The Beastie Boys do little wrong, in my opinion. I love their music, their vibe, and most everything about them. That being said, the song Sabotage alone is 5 stars. Their live performance of this on the David Letterman show is epic. These men know how to write and perform. Even though they seem buffoonish and comical at times, they provide solid music that rocks.

They can't, they won't, and they don't stop.

While Paul's boutique is the stan favorite and License to Ill is the commerical smash hit Ill Communication is the best album that encapsulates the beasties attitude, swagger, musical skill and talent. This albums is cover to cover with layers, worldly influence, over the top cool factor, laid back jazz and r&b undertones, overtones of classic 70's funk as well as interludes of proto "rap rock" and asides of straight up punk songs. I mean its safe to call this a no skip album. Finds a way to fill an hour and make it so cool. I've been aware of this album for 2 decades now and I'll continue to speak highly of its praises.

The BB album I’ve listened to the most.

Fun album

did not disappoint SO many bangers

Dug out the cd for this one. Not today, Satan's Streaming Services! There are many things I really, really like about this album, that I think is the most successful of the Beasties' albums -- (Not sure, but I think so.) -- The Sabotage video is so hilarious; there are a bunch of really good songs; the sampling is smart and deft; the funk playing is legit; the wild, big-tent creativity ... songs are at times unfinished, or assemblages of fragments, lots of stuff is jumbled up together in a joyous mess that works surprisingly well. When they are funny, and self-consciously so ("I feel international when I eat French toast") -- love that side of them. (Intergalactic video, when they enact a Power Rangers esgue fight in a city scape that is obviously made of cardboard boxes. Cracks me up.) (Apparently not in this book is Hello Nasty, another masterpiece, which includes Intergalactic .... Probably my favorite BB moment is at the end of Intergalactic , when there is a little bonus snippet -- I have been quoting Biz Markie for years to my family when they stare at me like, That's your idea? And I want to say, come on, you know ... and I quote Biz Markie to them: You know ?? .... With the echo .... ?? I'm telling you -- !! I love that moment. The Biz is -- was -- hilarious.) The didgeridoo based Shambala! So good. Big Youth sampled on Futterman's Rule ... Flute Loop .... Tremendous. There are of course things I don't like as well. The thrashy hardcore type stuff isn't for me. But they incorporate so much stuff that one simply accepts that this will happen. Few will dig everything they do on their best albums. At times, the dumbass masculinist juvenile side is ... a lot. Don't care for that. And that side of them always sets a limit on how much affection I can have for this band. But this is a pretty great album.

This was an incredibly funky album. One that forced me to dance then, and still does today. The lyrics are still surprising, occasionally funny, occasionally searingly personal. Their bravado was absolutely deserved by this point in their career. And then they had to write "Bodhisattva Vow..." I was pretty much in love with Iyengar yoga, Zen, & Tibetan Buddhism by 1994. I was already turned in the direction of teaching yoga by then. In retrospect, I was part of a big movement amongst young educated Gen X folks, one that would take the 70s blend of influences on yoga--the gurus who would eventually be revealed as sexual and financial predators--and find new gurus, new forms of movement, new connections in our generation's growing self-help woo-woo zone. I was so proud to be among them when the BBoys did this song. The voices of the monks still resonate with meaning for me today.

White ass hip-hop Beach boys harmonies Some distorted guitars A pinch of funk A dash of punk Awesome 9/10

This blew me away. I've always been a "fan" of the Beastie Boys, but mostly just enjoying their hits and songs that show up on playlists. I hadn't listened to an album, maybe Licensed to Ill a couple times. The step away from their masterful sampling work, this album is the Boys flexing their mastery of their own instruments. It's a mix of funk, punk, hip-hop, and metal. The instrumental tracks are a very welcome addition. It's absolutely a treat and had my head bopping from start to finish. Sabotage used to be one of the "meh" songs for me, and it's rocketed to my favorite from them now that I've got better context. I listened to this album four times yesterday waiting on a delayed flight. Amazing. "Shit, if this is gonna be that kind of party, I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes."

Crunchy One of my faves

I got my haircut correct like Anthony Mason (Knicks won the championship last night!)

This album takes me back! Knew it was cool as a young-un, but did not appreciate the musicality of it until now!

New Yoyk babyyyyyy

Awesome!

I remember when this came out... we were all blown away. This is one of those rare records that makes me feel like that most every time I listen to it. I was a metalhead/punk and yet we ALL took the time to listen to this. Rapping over heavy guitar riffs was new. and different. And definitely amazing. This record isn't just T10 of the year... it's one of those all-time great records that was right time, right place, right sound and right combo of pretty much everything that lined up.

Its a 5.

Really enjoyed this. Hadn’t experienced the punk side of Beastie Boys before and it was really fun. The collaboration with Q-Tip is a great complement to their sound. Love that early 90s hip-hop sound. Solid production and sound, paired well with great comedic sampling.

I love that the Beastie Boys wear the musical evolution on their sleeve. I loved this album when I first heard it, it gets better with age. Banger after banger and a wild eclectic ride. Great band, great album, great times.

Great album. Nice mix of hip hop, rock, and jazz. A good straight through listen.

It’s funky shit! Крутой альбом, разные жанры, крута, мб не 5, но я хочу, что вы мне сделаете

Favorite track(s): Sure Shot, B-Boys Makin' With the Freak Freak, Root Down, Sabotage, Get It Together, Futterman's Rule, Do It, Bodhisattva Vow It's hard to nail this down as as straight hip-hop album. It's a shame that their legacy is dominated by frat party songs instead of stuff like this. Heard before Previous rating: 9/10

I’ve listened to some Beastie Boys over the years, but not sure about much of this album. It’s very 80s/90s old school hip hop, recognized Sure Shot right away when the album started and I know I’ll know Sabotage. There’s some punk rock type stuff and Sabotage is the perfect mix of rock with hip hop influence. Some fun samples and beats on all of this. Some great funky and jazzy sounds. And it all flows song into the next song. Fun album. This album is great. A real original fun 90s hip hop album with a variety in the sound. It stays interesting through its long runtime because you feel like it’s always surprising you in a good way. The instrumentals add so much to the vibe of the album. I think this is a 5. Sometimes an album as a whole feels greater than its parts and this is that. It’s just a great listen front to back. My least favorite parts were the few straight punk songs, but didn’t hurt my enjoyment overall.

I love that the Beasties remind everyone that they were a punk band before their breakout. Those sensibilities, while ever-present in their entire discography, are on display here. In continuing their shift from sampling to live instruments, the Beasties also incorporate jazz and funk here, which plays so well with their style.

Good vibes in general but it’s not my vibe of my day

One of my favorite groups, and one of my favorite albums. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said about this. It's a classic, and encompasses all that I love about music: it covers so much ground over the whole album. I can keep listening.

Magnifique.

Fun and inventive. An effortlessly cool, wonderful fusion of hip-hop, jazz, funk, rock and punk. Expertly sequenced, the live instrumentation gelling well with the traditional sample/collage flow.

There's finally a beastie boys album I love

Damn, who knew the Beastie Boys were good

Front to back bangers.

Top album!!

A) it’s the Beastie Boys B) it’s ILL COMMUNICATION

Totally brilliant. Sabotage is a masterpiece. The jams are fantastic... not just shouty rappers, these lads can actually play. Loved it

The coolest girl in my school year got one of her equally cool friends to deliver a dubbed cassette of this to me during chemistry one day in 1994, and I was momentarily the coolest kid in my class. I then spent my summer holidays cruising around my grandparents town in my bright orange Volkswagen Passat with it blasting out of a boom box velcroed to the dashboard as my car stereo was busted. From a nostalgia perspective Ill Communication is about as 1994 an experience as I can imagine. It's also my favourite Beastie Boys album - great samples and rhymes, actually decent and authentic hardcore punk tunes, jammy instrumental-ish songs played as a real band, and just excellent vibes from start to finish. To this day lines from some songs appear in my head, apropos of nothing.

Muscular and tight rhythms, thoughtful and intelligent, refined without being overproduced. This is a significant benchmark for 90’s music

amazing

I had never listened to this all the way through before. I had License to Ill on cd as a teenager. This checks so many boxes for me, it has boom-baps, it has Q-Tip, it has Biz Markie. I always think my car stereo is terrible when I'm having a bad time with a CD but this sounded great on it

Absolute classic. Not a bad track. Instrumental tracks may be the best.

Awesome, like it a lot

If it’s going to that kind of party I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes!! This brings be back to riding in the back of my friend’s truck to basketball practice after school and it still holds up. 4.8 love it!!

When you are in the right mood, this is fun, If you are in the wrong mood annoying as fuck. Has an analogue warmth and lovely overblown soeaker quality on percussion, reals ense of fun and cheek in the lyrics, mad eclectic collection of different genres all mashed together with a real sense of fun. All the genres are executed fucking well. This slaps

sounds very cool!! I really liked it!!

simplesmente incrível. essa lista é uma caixa de surpresas. me surpreende nunca ter escutado isso antes.

Great, not only hip-hop, so much more. Rock, funky, punk, jazzy notes… excellent.

Awesome album from start to finish!

Espetacular

This is peak Beastie Boys for me - I know people will make a strong case for Paul's Boutique, or perhaps even Check Your Head, but this is the one for me. An amazing mishmash of hip-hop, thrashy punk, mellow jazzy instrumentals and even Buddhist chanting, this album has something for everyone, and even though it churns through different styles very quickly, it never feels disjointed or forced. The Beasties have been together for a long time by this stage, and are clearly very comfortable with each other, Mario Caldato Jr and Money Mark, both of whom make a big impression on this album. Fave tracks - 'Sabotage', 'Root Down', 'Sure Shot', 'Futterman's Rule', 'Sabrosa', I could go on......

So I've only 'really' heard their debut before and I wasn't impressed with that, but this one started off with one great track after another. Three songs into this and I'm wondering if this is really gonna be an amazing record, it's like a broad range of genres and talent clashing aggressively in a very pleasing way. I take a peek at the track list and I'm scared. 20 songs? An hour's worth of music? It was just baffling to me they were starting off so hard, I wasn't even considering they'd stick the landing. Then that first instrumental track came up, Bobo On The Corner. Motherfuckers locked me in right at that moment, they managed to blend a mostly verbal genre into the beat and the production of the sound, and they do it excellently with different elements all throughout this record. A few listens later and I even appreciate the way their bars are built, the idea and the message. It feels oddly mature, I guess mostly considering this came out in the '90s. I can really only complain about the flow of the lyrics, they feel dated at times, but I feel like they really nailed it when I heard 'em go they "got the motherfuckin' old school flavor". Just drop the mic, fuck sake. 4.8/5

An epochal record, a genuine landmark in music. And a cracking listen. I wish I could give six stars.

This is my third favorite Beastie Boys album. I remember when I first heard She’s On It I knew I wanted to be a fan. Their evolution from the party guys to the serious musicians was definitely a crazy turn that I didn’t expect but if you understand anything about the band they were always trying to push boundaries. Originally coming from the hardcore scene the songs like sabotage and tough guy make sense here. The instrumentals were excellent on the album. Many people talked about them using less samples on this album. They still used samples on plenty of the songs as it was part of their DNA. The instrumentals definitely helped break up the tedious nature of the rhymes. Ill Communication was basically a continuation from Check Your Head. I think both albums are equally great. You could swap them in my ranking. This is a classic but I think all Beastie Boys albums are classics.

Such a fun album, great beats, everyone doing their part well. Favorite track: Sabotage other picks: sure shot, root down, all right hear this

> the Beatles

me da ganas de darme un saque de merca, ser un skater e irme a una fiesta con mis amigos skaters.

Absolute masterpiece!! Funky, punky, rocking and grooving. Great music up and down the album.

This album didn’t really begin until Sabotage, but then it took off running! What a treat!

Really cool varied album

Groovy & uplifting for the soul man!

tampoco voy a ser objetiva con los beastie boys xao

This is the first album that was recommended to me and GOD its genuinely so gud like no one makes music like this these days and i want to expand my taste and this is something which will be like the start of rabbit hole I'm getting myself into like the BEST SONG OF ALBUM HAS TO BE heart attack man , get it together and alright hear this tbh i Didn't understand the hype of sabotage like i just didn't like sabotage that much but these three uhh These are the best and i would rate this album 4.4/5

Mmmmm yes very interesting.

Great album

Absolute banger van een plaat!

Grew up with this as my go-to BB album, so I’m a little biased calling it their best. It’s all over the place, but I love how they followed their muse wherever it took them. Miss these guys.

4.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/beastie-boys/ill-communication/ So good, even the fillers are killer. Okay, suffers a bit from being too long and wanting to do too much (punk songs are mwuah), but overall really great. Those boys sure were beastie.

++*: Sabotage ++: Sure Shot, Tough Guy, B-Boys Makin' with The Freak Freak, Bobo on the Corner, Root Down, Get It Together, Sabrosa, Futterman's Rule, Alright Hear This, Eugene's Lament, Flute Loop, Do It, Ricky's Theme, The Scoop, Shambala, Bodhisattva Vow, Transitions +: The Update, Heart Attack Man 9,7/10

No notes, love this album

Beastie Boys are always good

Beasties continue to pump out albums of their own direction and pull us along with them. A heady mix of hip-hop, hardcore punk, lo-fi social conscious flow. Goddamn these guys were great. I still miss MCA. It annoys me to think all the great music we've been robbed of. Best Tracks: Sure Shot; Root Down; Sabotage

Felt transported back to better days, absolute classic!

Not quite every song here is a hit (namely the punk ones don't land for me) but I think there's more than enough great material to make up for it. So many bangers, so much variety, and so much fun Fav tracks: B-Boys Makin' With the Freak Freak, Sure Shot, The Update

Man this album fucks severely also

I love the classic hip-hop, and the Beastie Boys are some of the best to do it. They're lyrics are great, and the beats are timeless. This album includes a great range of music, from some more standard hip-hop to plenty of instrumentals of different genres, and some heavier songs leaning into rock like sabotage.

One of my favourite albums from one of my favourite bands.

One of my Mom's fav songs was Sabotage. I always loved the song and music video lolz. I never listened to the rest of the album until now and I'm so glad I didddd.

Es un discazo, buenísimo de inicio a fin.

Best Beastie Boys record by far.

One of my favorite groups.

the singles feel totally different from the rest of the tracks on this album, but they're both really good.

God damn, what a record. How did this one slip past me? Sure, a few tracks were familiar, but the whole album. holy hell! The genre mix is wild: hip-hop, punk energy, dusty funk grooves, even these almost jam-band instrumentals. It constantly shifts without losing momentum. It just gets more intense for evrry listen. Raw, creative, and unpredictable. An absolute beast of an album.

The Beastie Boys’ best record. No question. Phone is ringing. Oh my God.

Music (this album exists beyond genre!) doesn't get much better than this monumental record

Right on!

Once again the only good white rappers. Absolutely amazing album

This is dope AF. Wildly more talented than I ever realized.

Surprisingly impressive versatility. Way more progressive and experimental than I thought they could be.

'kæft det er fedt. Funky og råt. Klar femmer.

Classic. Sabotage is the coolest song, and the video was unique. I cant listen to this every day but once in a while it is fantastic

Los 90 fueron una época de mezclas, o al menos así la recuerdo. Al mismo tiempo que triunfaban el grunge, le britpop y el rap, todo eso podía acabar mezclado en algún disco. Puede que este sea uno de esos a medio camino de todo. Excelente. Guardo casi todo, incluso las partes instrumentales. A destacar: "Sure Shot", "Root Down","Sabotage", "Heart Attack Man" o "Bodhisattva Vow".

10/10 Album through and through

Five stars.....this album is amazing. Why have I not heard it before????

Classic!!!

buenisimo me enamoró

Masterpiece.

Perfection

Will always be one of my favourite albums of all time

"Hey, Bender gonna make some noise, with ya hard drive scratched by the Beastie Boys." "Thats watcha-watcha-watcha get on level 5." 🎶

It's amazing how much I dislike the other Beastie Boys album on the list and like this album. The rhymes are tight, the beats are sweet and frequently sampled in modern times, and the experimental aspects of the latter half of the album are bonuses imo. 5/5

An all-time great album stacked full of bangers

Immensely creative work. "Transitions" is sick as hell.

Classic. One of my favourites. A little bit of everything.

Saufen

One of my favs.

This album is sick.

Surprisingly punk, I really enjoyed this album. I did not expect the mix of genres they pulled from.

Classic

Sampling, industrial, slight punk influence- was really good

Oh my god, that's the funky shit. There's bits of everything on here, and it feels like they threw every idea they were working on onto the CD but it's all Beastie. Even when it goes all Eugene's Lament. Sure Shot, B Boys Makin' With the Freak Freak, Sabotage, Get It Together - it's that kind of party

Groovy first track. Bit repetitive for me, compared to J5. track 2 fun more punky - gives A&tS/modern Aussie punk vibe. on reading they started in hardcore punk - makes sense! RAtM vibe too. Guitars/bass are very cool. Reminds me a bit of Stone roses guitars. Sabotage great. Really like Sabrosa. Violin on Eugene's lament was very cool. Loads of different styles. production super cool. great sampling and instrumentation.

Scranton! what? The electric city

Absolute winner. When I heard this the first time I was blown away the first classic rap song followed by hardcore punk. They showb their musical skills and instrument dominance. Ska, funk, rock, punk, rap a masterpiece anywhere you put it top 100

Goated

Great album, I love how much it showcases all of the styles that Beastie Boys are capable at. 4.5/5

Absolute banger of an album

крутий мені дуже сподобався!! я не думала що електрогітара може так класно поєднуватися з репом. і музичка якраз панкова як я люблю

One of the blvery best to do it

This is a subway ride. So many things competing for attention between the fellow straphangers, motion of the car, to the views flying past the windows. The local has a distinct rhythm vs the intensity of the express. Some routes are familiar while a few are exciting new and oh so different.

I've heard Beastie Boys songs here and there, mostly in movies and TV, but have never listened to a full album. Turns out I'm a fan! There's so much variety track-to-track and the beats are super funky. This one definitely got me groovin' around my apartment. This is the kind of hip hop I really like. You can hear the jazz and rock influences throughout and that creates such a unique sound. To be able to write songs in so many different genres and styles well is impressive. Tracks like Sabotage hit the same mark for me as Rage Against The Machine. Perfect to listen to when you're pissed off. Flute Loop is such a cool, jazzy tune. It's neat to see some songs that incorporate Buddhist chants too (Shambala and Bodhisattva Vow). Apparently one of the band members, Adam Yauch, practiced Buddhism.

The first time I had heard the Beastie Boys my friend’s older brother was playing a song that he downloaded off Napster. Napster had just become popular starting one of the more widespread eras of music piracy. Not that people didn’t make physical copies of music before digital piracy. This just really disrupted the music industry so Napster ended up being sued by artists like Metallica and Dr. Dre, etc. Though Napster truly paved the way for digital music to make it into the mainstream. All these streaming services should pay their respect to Napster. That first time hearing the Beastie Boys was very memorable. I had never heard anything like it before and I really liked the groovy, hip-hop, punk rock style. IMO they really carved out their own genre. I’ll always remember that moment in my friends house hearing the Beastie Boys for the first time and continue to frequent their discography from time to time. Fun Beastie Boys fact is that if you want to sell a commercial product. They will not let you use their music. In Adam Yauch’s will, it even discloses the prohibition to use their music or images for advertising.

Might as well call these guys the back-scratch boys cause they're scratching itches left and right. Talk about a dope fuckin album, sheeeeesh. Ive been a big fan of Sabotage ever since rockband, but never ventured too far into their music. I think i can appreciate this way more now compared to when I was a Wee lad screaming on the rock band mic and slamming the plastic drums. Some jazz, rock, rap, hip hop, a bit of grunge. It all melds so well together and flows like a smooth river front to back. *chefs kiss* Also the random Qtip feature is the cherry on top. Will be revisiting this one many times to come. 9.5/10

Nice Favourite song - Shambala 10/10

Finally! I needed a recommendation like this.

Perfect album, one of my all time favourites. Jazzy, experimental and yet full of hits.

Always had a soft spot for the Beastie Boys. Far more experimental than I was expecting simply because I am a Licensed to Ill truther. Pulled inspiration from a lot of genres and did it well. I saw another review on here that said they wish the album was like 10 minutes shorter… and that kind of hits the nail on the head (in the wise words of RuPaul… edit). But still a highly enjoyable listen. I see why it’s on the 1001 albums list and is a body of work I see myself coming back to again and again. 4.5 stars.

she’s

Funky and punky. Love some of the huge chunky bass work. Sampling is eclectic and excellent. Love how raw and rough and punk it all feels though. Some excellent rhymes too

Hell yeeeeeeah

Top shelf album. Easy 5

Arguably the most essential of the Beasties Boys' catalog. On this record, they tackle Hip-Hop, Jazz, Hardcore, Funk, Tibetan Throat Singing, Rock, and whatever the smash hit, "Sabotage," is. I'll bet they could have made a killer Country tune, if they wanted to.

This is kind of the epitome of 90s rap. It's so steeped in what the 90s is, and its just such a fun album. It's wall to wall bangers, it just feels like such a labor of love. Favorites: Sure Shot, Sabotage, Get It Together

The Beastie Boys are a continually evolving sound. With Ill Communication they leaned in even more to playing their own instruments (and away from sampling). “Sabotage” was a MONSTER hit but for me “Root Down” and “Get It Together” were my personal favorites.

I kept telling myself "Jayde, you're not gonna five-star the first album on the list come on! You're just not calibrated yet." But I gotta do it; nothing else feels right. I found this fun and meaningful, plus the instrumental tracks were such grooves dang. To me, the line between 4 and 5 is replayability, and eventually i conceded at the very least, those instrumental tracks are going on the TTRPG brainstorming and atmosphere playlists for sure. 1 - i have negative feelings 2 - i have no feelings 3 - glad i heard it 4 - "oh i like that album!" *5* - in the rotation

I admit it, I'm biased when it comes to the Beastie Boys. I simply love them, and I admire the way they can combine all styles to create such great music.

I already know this is a top tier album, always happy to listen to da bois

My favorite Beasties album. Catchy, innovative and fun without a lot of the sophomoric humor of the earlier albums.

Love this LP, Have since 1994. An easy 5

Hell yeah.

THAT WAS CRAZYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY? i did not expect to enjoy it that much, i dont always connect with things on first listen but this was something else.. the instrumentals are so fucking captivating, it flows wonderfully, it transported me back, made me thing of this guy, i saw myself as a guy in the 90s , so excited about how this will continue to find shape in my life

FIREEE

Loved the instrumentation and mix of genres. Really fun listen from beginning to end for the range of styles.

"shiiit, if this gone be that kind of party i'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes!!" This is a jazz / funk album with some dope raps here and there. I've listened to all the hits but never the surrounding tracks; sheesh was I missing out. Tons of artistry and creativity to be found within FRESH music.

I love it. Classic.

This album is an absolute monster. This was at every high school party and then college party I ever attended. Lots of great memories and the album is worth it for sabotage alone. maybe the best in their catalog.

Honestly, it's great. There are other great Beastie Boys albums (some of you may prefer Paul's Boutique or License To Ill) but this is my favourite. 'Sabotage' is a near-perfect song and 'Flute Loop' will nestle into your brain forever, hopefully not causing any future deficiencies of judgement that might lead you to quack medicine and a political career, but it certainly is a brain worm. Some people still think that the 90's had nothing to contribute to culture but this is a record that clearly proves otherwise.

an era defining album

Hip hop spectacular

The Beastie Boys were my first real music crush - and my first official concert. I thought MCA was everything (full swoon). I still remember that show: it felt like every other girl in the audience was right there with me, ripping off bras and throwing them on stage like that’s what you do. I didn’t have the guts to but I fully understood the sentiment. And this album after all these years is just still so good! Checks all the boxes for me.

ONE OF THE BEST EVER!!

Banger through and through, my favorite Beasties album.

Oh man, rolling into downtown Lincoln with this one playing at full volume. I loved the sound and I loved the unique approach to being cool. Holds up so well, just vibing to the great beats and nobody samples like the Beastie Boys. Would be tough to pick a favorite between this one and Paul's Boutique.

Beastie Boys at their peak. Assured, varied and enjoyable. The hardcore tracks on here deserve a mention just because they are great, but this is such a mixed bag, which is why it works. An absolute 5.

10 stars

Still love this album

I wasn't totally into listening to this album. I saw the tracklist and thought "Far too long. This will surely drag on." I thought about putting it off for another day. The Beastie Boys are meant for a certain time or event. So I chose to put it on while browsing Black Friday Deals and I realized the Beastie Boys are meant to be listened to almost anytime. Suddenly there's only 5 tracks left. I haven't been paying attention to track names and that's a good thing. This album has been one continuous experience featuring the flute (my least favorite instrument but thoroughly enjoyed here), Q-Tip, Biz Markie, a Jimmy Smith sample, throat singing...I mean seriously, what was I thinking???? What a fantastic collection of songs that just....flow..... The second Beastie Boys album I've reviewed and now that I've made it to the end, the second Beastie Boys album to get a 5 star rating out of me. (4.7 but what the hell)

Some albums aren’t meant to be dissected, they’re part of your DNA. Ill Communication lands there for me. The Beastie Boys were one of the first bands I ever connected with; I still remember finding my brother’s Licensed to Ill cassette and instantly feeling like I’d stumbled onto something amazing. By the time Ill Communication came along, they’d already become one of those bedrock artists—funny, loud, chaotic in the best way, and constantly evolving without losing the core energy that hooked me as a kid. I can’t pretend to be objective about it; this album is woven into my musical upbringing. I just love it, full stop.

Another album that is in my top 50 of all time. This recording was being played non-stop when it first came out and I couldn't get enough of it.

Classic, everyone should listen.

Total classic.

Chaotic. In the best way. Grandmaster Flash and Run DMC cuts beside jazz riffs and flute loops. Reggae moments from the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, mix with comedy stand-up routines, sheep sounds, and a dog barking "I love you" from a Little Caesars ad. The use of live instruments makes for a proper band energy. This was the ideal coming together of musical interests for me as a teen. Adam Yauch even learned the double bass, lugging it with him on a snowboarding trip to keep his practice up. We switch between hip hop, hardcore punk, funk, jazz and even Buddhist chanting. There's so much going on here, that Liam Howlett was able to create a whole Prodigy song out of a single line: "Oh my God it's the funky shit". Adam Yauch calling out misogynistic rap tropes, and a misunderstanding of their previous frat boy satire directly in the lyrics of Sure Shot, shows the Beastie Boys growing up. Then there's Sabotage. It still rocks with an insane punk energy that makes you want to slide across the bonnet of your car while wearing Ray Bans and short sleeves. It's also home to one of my favourite guitar solos of all time. Pure chaotic energy, perfect for the song. Seriously varied, chaotic, messy, unique, unpredictable and unexpected. Shit, if this is gonna be that kind of party...

The classic Beastie's raps but with real instruments. Amazing lyrics and tunes.

Excellent album... and that's coming from someone who doesn't like rap. Definitely dig Sabotage and Tough Guy is a nice hardcore song that was surprising to hear. TIL that the Beastie Boys started from the hardcore band the Young Aborigines--maybe that has something to do with my ability to enjoy their music. 5/5

This really shows off the range that the beastie boys have. Very good album.

High 4, rounding up. Always forget how versatile and nuanced these guys are. And Sabotage is such a banger

I mean what can you say? A perfect record. Feel like I should have grown up with it. Maybe that’s why I’m not as excited by it as I’d like to be.

What!? Why is Licensed to Ill the only stuff I have to hear everywhere when this exists!?! Insane!!

Loved this. The album is all over the shop, but in a good way. There must be half a dozen genre's showcased, everything from rap to rock to jazz. Brilliant!

I can't help but enjoy Beastie Boys... they're always so much fun. This album is definitely my fav of theirs, that I've heard.

hip-hop, funk, punk, jazz... Mis asi see Beastie Boys on? Imeline. Ta on kuradi imeline. Mulle nii meeldib see album. See on täielik kogemusalbum, üleminekud on nii head ja seda kuulates ei teki mul üldse igavust. Albumi parimate palade sekka kuuluvad kindlasti "Sabotage", "Root Down", "Get It Together" (Questi Q-Tipiga!), "Alright Hear This", "Flute Loop" ja "Transitions". Kõla järgi saab aru, et Beastie Boys inspireeris nii palju tulevasi artiste. Uskumatu plaat.

Great stuff

I have been surprised by many albums on this list but I think this is the first time I have been floored. This is ambitious, eclectic and absolutely relentless. The rest of it is so good I am (easily) able to look past the occasional thrashy guitar and the nasally vocals.

Full of classics, and excellent instrumental transition pieces. Essential Beastie Boys that own their genre.

This was an unexpected gem

This album is a vibe start to finish. RIP MCA.

Ad Rock come and rock the sure shot! Fresh like Dougie when I get my specs and on the microphone I come correct Timing on the clock when I rock the hip hop Top notch is my stock on the soapbox! 10/10

Amazing

Despite Sabotage being one of my karaoke jams and dream wedding walk-up song, I had never listened to this full album before. Long story short - I fucking love the Beastie Boys.

Banger…

Top tier

Great album! One of a few bands that successfully experiment and change over time.

Sabotage will forever be a millennial anthem.

From the first flute riff of ‘Sure Shot,’ this one had me. If I were walking up to the plate in a major-league ballpark, that’d be my entrance music. Ill Communication captures everything I love about music — groove, energy, experimentation, and joy. And I have to smile hearing ‘Root Down,’ knowing its DNA traces back to Jimmy Smith — the organ master behind Back at the Chicken Shack. Then there’s Sabotage — the track and video that proved the Beasties could turn sheer chaos into art. It’s still one of the most iconic music videos ever made. I just love these guys — their blend of musicianship, attitude, and humor is unmatched.

Thoroughly blown away by this one. Caught myself doing the stank face multiple times, especially on some of the (multiple, amazing) instrumental tunes on the back half of the record. Sure, "Sabotage" is a killer track, but I dare say that track was my least favorite part of this album (possibly just due to listening fatigue) in favor of the more funky/jazzy tunes scattered around. Was blindsided by those sounds, in the best way possible.

Skater Sound! Das waren noch Zeiten.

Possibly my favorite album in 7th grade. A wild journey through a cabinet of mid-90s curiosities guided by three loud, Jewish New Yorkers.

a so called true classic. Sabotage just blew me away back in the days. Both the song and the video

It’s a belter, always fun emphasising words like a fourth beastie boy

It’s got everything and sounds like nothing else. Flute Loop gets me every time.

So I always thought that I could only tolerate the Beastie Boys in small doses. Listening to this album, I think that might still be true, but they recognize that too. Instead of an onslaught of repetitive beats and lyrics, they space the songs out with interesting and unique instrumental tracks. The songs are designed to flow from one to the next. Genres and bent, flipped and thrown across the album, dashing from punk to jazz to funk to rock. And amazingly the whole package works. It’s a solid album and one that I think everyone really should listen to, if only to adjust their perception of the music the Beastie Boys truly made.

Going to work, driving my parent's car that will eventually be impounded for no payment, dancing all summer long, Montse, blasting Sabotage in front of Petrushka's.

Original hip hop with hardcore punk. Whoever lived in the 80s must remember the chaos;)

This album is AWESOME. I had already save a song from this before but didn’t know the rest was even better. These honkies know a thing or two about instrumentation and sampling!

Classic in illin'

My second favorite Beastie album. Perfect cover to cover

Can't beat a beastie.

oh hell yeah

I‘ve been in love with this album ever since I listened to it for the first time in 1994 and I couldn’t believe that it would still click immediately after all these years. One of the most original, unique and innovative Hip Hop albums out there, with lots and lots of excursions into different styles and genres. Awesome production as well. Definitely one of my favorite albums of all time

Really enjoyed this. Liked every song. Going with five although that might be too generous. Will need to listen to again.

Man the addition of actual musical instruments, the varied genre inspired tunes and the Beastie Boys made for a fantastic album!

Don't have to listen to this one, it's my favorite Beastie Boys record, and my first 5 star review.

This is the best beasties album, though it is difficult to choose just one.

*i love you* YOU CAN'T YOU WON'T AND YOU DON'T STOP (I got this when it came out, and have always loved it)

1994. Senior year of high school. The sound track of my life.

This is my 3rd favorite Beastie Boys album. I don’t listen to it much anymore but every time I do it gets better. Side 2 is amazing with great instrumentals. This is also MCA’s best work. Standouts include Get It Together, The Update, Futterman’s Rule, Heart Attack Man, and Bodhisattva Vow.

Goatanuma sample spotted

This album lives in the shadow of the 2 preceding albums, but it's great & probably deserves more accolades. Sure, it's bloated, but that's a product of its time more than anything.

Loved it.

This is a no-brainer - wholeheartedly agree!

Legendary...

There was a lot of rapmetal in the 90’s. Beastie Boys fit into that, but were different in the sense that they were primarily a hip-hop act that included elements of metal and punk. Loud and rowdy, but with a musicality rarely heard in this kind of music. 5/5

What a delight to hear this again.

classic

I loved every minute of this. So much variety and not a bad track in the bunch. A little jazzy, a little funky, even a little thrashy (and Buddhist monks?? Why not!) Was going to give it 4 stars but… tbh it’s one of the few albums in this project that made me say, "I hope it’s not over yet." Listened before: no Listen again: already did!

A blast! I think this is their best album. Every sound, every instrument played. Everything just sounds great!

If you don’t like this album then I don’t like you. A solid 60% of the vocals on this sound like they were recorded inside a metal bucket and they’re great. Jazzy, funky, punky greatness.

HOLY SHITTT this is amazing. Ill revisit this constantly cause what the hellll also added songs to playlists which is rare in this challenge

fuck you this slaps every song slaps ong holy shit tf is those instumentals they fire af

all-time classic don't try me

nigggaaaaaaaaaaa tf is thhgggaaaaaaatattttttttt goooddddddaaammmmnnnn

True classic

Amazing record. So diverse in sound. Rap meets punk meets jazz meets funk.

My favourite Beastie Boys album, they were not losing their brand, style or identity but they were blessed with a bit more maturity across the tracks which brought the very best out of them. Classic.

Check Your Head is probably my #1, but Ill Communication is still a no-skip. I had a "One, Two, Oh My God" poster on my wall. It's never not the right time for the Beastie Boys.

The best!

Lots of surprises, I was never bored and they pulled off every different genre they attempted. Overall just a cool ass album

One of the all time classics. Every single second of this album is baked in to my music DNA. One of the absolute best albums ever made.

Yes yes yes a fucking genuine classic after a few days of shit oicks. Played it to death, still sounds amazing 30 years later. A top 10 album of all time for me personally.

One of if not the best of the genre!

Not a lot of albums better than this

Rating: 9.5/10 This album encompasses everything I love about this group: experimental production, great synergy between all of the members, and humorous lyrics. A bit all over the place in terms of style but it still somehow feels cohesive. The instrumental tracks are a particular highlight, so diverse instrumentally and musically throughout this entire album. This album is pretty long but goes by in a heartbeat, which is what makes it so great.

I never appreciated how sophisticated this album is until now. A little punk, jazz, hip hop but a lot of Beastie.

Great album, beastie boys rule

Extremely fun and sonically interesting. A lot of jazz and like 10 genres across this. 4.5 probably but i’m gonna just say 5.
