Reviews (page 15 of 15)

First time listening: 16/20 songs liked I slept on them. I generally know their top songs which to me sound very grading because of their voices (beat first is what I judge) but wow. Their instrumentals and sounds on this album are super experimental. I will definitely give them another chance. 3 songs saved

Not my style at all. Could finish a single song

it was ok

Didn't finish the whole album. I've never had strong feelings for the beastie boys. Enjoyed the funky jazzy bits, but not really my jam. 2.0

Classic! Best of hip hop, alternat, funk and jazz

"Root Down" is a vibe, this bass line is so good, the guitar lick complements it so well. My favorite so far. "Sabotage" is so sick, the guitar line goes so hard but not too hard, leaves some space for the vocals to elevate the track. The hook is probably the most memorable so far, pretty great. "Sabrosa" - sure I guess? It's catchy, but it doesn't really build up to much. Keep in mind that I'm very out of my element here, I don't listen to a lot of hip hop or music from the 90's. "The Update" - this gave me the full mix I was missing so far, with that sort of pulsing bass. Definitely works as some great punctuation within the album. "Futterman's Rule" is pretty good, love the guitars. Kinda wish it would go a little crazier though. "Alright Hear This" is a banger! "Eugene's Lament" is a pretty great little interlude. Though I think it runs a little longer than it should. "Do It" I do like this track, but the album is starting to lose me a little. Even with the risks they take with incorporating flutes and whatnot, they still deliver a very straight, even sound. I think some more variety in the beats, and deliveries would make it better. "Ricky's Theme" is kind of getting me back into it, the tasteful production centered around the very nice bass line works well. The drums sound great. "Heart Attack Man" I really thought they were going to feed the acoustic baby in me. No but this bangs. Do wish the vocals were a little farther up in the mix to match the energy though. "The Scoop" started out a little slow for me, but got better as it went. That outro is pretty great. "Shambala" PLEASE this scared me, thought it was okay. "Bodhisattva Vow" So the scary zombie vocals are still here. They work okay here, but they're also all I can focus on. Overall, this was pretty damn good, the production was probably the best facet. The bass lines were slick, and the guitar complemented them really well. The drums were a little spotty, but when they were good, they were really good. The vocal performances were overall pretty good, but I do think I would've liked a little more variety. This is just based on the first listen, so my opinion might change. But a pretty good album to get me out of my comfort zone.

Gorgeous

Summer sounds

I get why The Beasties Boys should be on the list, but not this album. Licensed to Ill was the one. By this album it wasn't new anymore. Originally they were ground-breaking (though personally I'd have preferred it if they had just left the ground where it was) with sampling (including Led Zep riffs) and scratching etc. Swearing a lot in interviews and generally being badly behaved - standard teenager stuff which just screamed 'fake' to me at the time ("Mike D" turns out to be the son of a New York art dealer.. ffs). I hated hip hop and rap then and hate it even more now.

Great album, but I couldn't really do the whole album!

Better than “Licensed To Ill” by far to me. Great use of samples. The album does run a little long though. Favorite Track : Get It Together Least Favorite Track : Ricky’s Theme

A solid hip-hop album with some banging tracks, but it peters off at the end. 8.0/10 Best Tracks "Sure Shot" "Sabotage"

Here’s the thing with the Beasties: no matter how varied they try to be (and they throw a lot at the wall here - hardcore punk, freewheeling jazz flute, rollicking basslines), they always end up coming out the same way. In your face hollering to a groovy drum track. Big, fun and made for parties, even when they’re trying to go beyond that. As with all of us, their biggest strength is also their biggest weakness.

Great album

It wis not bad at all, I thought I was going to hear the beach boys at first but I was pleasantly surprised.

Fraid to say I spilt all my juice for today trying to write a comprehensible critique of Bo Burnham: Inside, so all of I've got to say about this is it's funny, bouncy and suprising enough to justify its 50 minutes.

I’ve loved this album since I first saw the video for Sabotage on MTV

Solid album, a lot more interlude type tracks than I expected but a very enjoyable listen.

Didn't enjoy this one

It sounds like if Rage against the machine tried to rap. I would have given it a 2, but listening to the whole album a few times ups it to a three. They get bonus points for their songs all sounding different. They lose points for sounding really dated. You might say they... SABOTAGED themselves xD

Great work from the Beastie Boys. Perhaps a few too many tracks; they could have left a couple out. Overall very good though.

Typical beastie boys

Brilliant album

good that.

Nope… really???

Great and propably enjoyed it more than Paul's Boutique.

Characteristic vocal mixing, reverb and distortion are overused; It sounds unique but it becomes tiring after some time, good panning that enriches the experience. Drums production (reverb and EQs) doesn't suit my preferences. Interesting beats and guitar, unique instrumentation. Great instrumental interludes. I didn't find the lyrics appealing most of the time. Not my cup of tea, 2.5/5

Low 4. It is a classic, but still it left a little bit underwhelmed.

am i... a beastie boys fan??

pretty good instrumentals; a few really good songs, some not so good 3-4/5

I've loved these guys since the 80s, and yet I constantly forget what a great listen most of their albums are, so keep being surprised by how much they rock. Few bands can make me smile as much as the Beastie Boys do. They're familiar, we grew up at the same time, they're practically family. This album was a great start to the day today.

Omistan levyn.... ihan kovaa menoa, joskin myös muistikuva puudutuksesta tuli mieleen...

Class, also got me through sick work times

FUCKIN' YES!!!!

Nice energy, Beastie Boys are classic, well.

I know, right? I just don't like it that much.

I've never understood why The Beastie Boys' reputation as the ultimate frat boy party band, forged during the Licence To Ill era, stuck with them throughout their career. They knocked out "the hip hop Sgt. Pepper" in Paul's Boutique and still don't seem to get the credit they deserve as innovators. This album is all over the place in the best possible way. Hip hop to punk via funk and Miles Davis inspired jazz. An absolute classic.

no es mi estilo pero re weno el disco. es como kyuss con rage against the machine

finally, the first five star album of this list

Paljon ihan hyvää, paljon erikoista puppaa. Meinasin peruskolmosta, mutta annan nyt vaan 2. Sekava kokonaisuus.

What a musical masterpiece. Really loved this one.

Not sure why I am having a hard time getting into this album. I think I want to like the Beastie Boys more than I actually do. Fine album overall, interesting sound but not one I could listen to very long for one time, but luckily they changed it a few times throughout

Too much shouting to truly be called sing. Have to admit this was a big skip for me. To use their lyrical words” I can’t stand it” Sabotage. Is there a 0 rating available?

Good early rock/rap genre expanding album. “No Sleep til Brooklyn” Is a favorite.

I wanted to like this and it was really fun for the first 30 minutes but it definitely got samey and the instrumental sections did not hold my attention. 6/10

Pretty fun. Too long. 7

Cool album, the better known songs are by far the best

Used to listen to this all the time back in the day.

Incredibly stupid, pretty fun. I do think the Beastie Boys are better when you don't listen to an entire album at once though.

Great tracks. Funk.. Jazzy

it was aight, not rlly my style but aight ig.

I've always enjoyed the Beastie Boy's so much for the originality and freshness in the rap genre. A punk band that turned rap and still played live instruments. They have a fantastic instrumental album called "The In Sound From Way Out!" that they released after this record and you can very much tell they were itching to jam again on here. So many instrumental tracks on this album. Hard ones too. They're instrumental album is definitely a lot more funky than the ones on here. They fit the tone of the album a lot better though. "Get It Together," with Q-Tip is a classic. I think I find these guys so impressive every time because its such a collaborative project. Very few rap groups now have that flow where they literally finish each others sentences. Some groups feel like they don't even write in the same room, but I could not imagine the Beastie Boys being apart when they create these songs. A group that could never go solo.

Those beastie boys…I still don’t know if it is true but I read something a long time ago that they were originally the Latch Brothers who recorded some songs for the Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack. I haven’t googled to confirm because I want it to be true. But we need to live in a world of truth so I did just google it and I was half right!! Mike Diamond was in Latch Brothers and Beastie Boys so I’ll take that as a win. I love the Beastie Boys style and this album really shows that. Sure Shot lets you know the angle of the album before immediately jumping into the less than a minute Tough Guy. Sabotage is such a good song with that famous intro beat. I really enjoyed Get It Together as well, was that one of the members of Tribe Called Quest on that one?? The only song on this album I’d listened to already was Sabotage so all of this is new to me and I’m loving it. I’m not sure if I like this album or License to Ill more, I haven’t listened to either of them fully but there feels like a ton of variety on this one. There are short and long songs, instrumental and rap. The whole album feels like a Jet Set Radio type album as well. Perfect for skateboarding down Mulholland or just cruising on the 405. The cover of the album looks like either a Beastie Boy or a Blues Brother (BB) ordering at a drive in. I guess there could be some Ill Communication there. Maybe some dumb car hop got their order wrong and they were like “THIS IS A SABOTAGE”.

I liked this a lot. The beats and production are so good and the rapping is decently hype. The back half got kinda weird and slow but it is what it is. 8

As great as the Beastie Boys are in their production and flow, I had a hard time with the amount of distortion in many of the tracks, and I'm sad to say I only made it halfway through :( maybe I'll revisit this album again someday.

3.5, couple of bangers and s lot of instrumental filler

Some great tracks (Sabotage my favourite of theirs), and shows their songs aren’t all comic munition.

Rap rock is a no no

Better rock-rap than most new metal ever was. || Loved listening for the samples! When the levee breaks by Led Zeppelin and (I think) sweet leaf by Black Sabbath on the first track. definitely caught some recognizable riffs on girls and other tracks, but couldn’t name em all. || Fun facts I learned looking this up: this was the first rap album to chart! || Kerry King of Slayer played the riff and solo in No Sleep Til Brooklyn, they met because Rick Rubin was producing Slayers album at the same time! || they also were planning to record a Beatles cover but ran into legal trouble with Micheal Jackson - funny this came on our list right after thriller!

I consider myself pretty well-versed with the history of hip hop and most of the old records, but this is a side of the Beastie Boys I'd never heard before. I was expecting something more along the lines of "Licensed to Ill" or "Paul's Boutique", but this is something completely different. This isn't a rap album with jazz and funk influences, this is a jazz album with funky raps played over it. When "Sabrosa" came on halfway through, I had to double-check that I was still listening to the same album. Five well-deserved stars here

Oh boy they did it. They made me homesick for good ol Brooklyn. This is a Sure Shot to a good time. Great flow, mad sample game. A treasure.

I respect the Beastie Boys, but I've never really been a fan. This album fits that pattern. There's plenty of cool things going on, but usually too much or not enough on any given track. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy a number of songs, especially "Sabotage" of course. But this is the first album we've had where I skipped songs. It's longer than I would like to listen to the Beastie Boys. A lot of the beats are cool, but these guys are all over the place. Plus they use a lot of distortion, which I normally enjoy, but here it obscures to the point where I don't even care what they're saying or doing. Some of the world-music or jazzy-type stuff is interesting, but for most of the record they sound like a sloppy, unfocused Rage Against the Machine. The most memorable vocal performances were Q-Tip on "Get It Together" and Biz Markie on "Do It," which reminds me that (1) it's Black History Month, and we haven't had a black artist/album since Michael Jackson, and (2) this is our second "hip hop" album, and both were by white artists. I'm going to listen to Midnight Marauders as a palate cleanser after this--it came out a year before this, and it doesn't sound as dated. Hell, Illmatic was released a month before this! This sounds 10 years older than Illmatic. The audacity to release THIS, AFTER Illmatic, and to INCLUDE the word "ill" in your title.....seek help. This was gonna be a 2 until I learned that. In the words of James Brown, "I'm mad!" Favorite tracks: Sabotage, Get It Together, Sure Shot Album art: Uhhh....it's a guy at a drive through or something? Very boring to look at. He looks like he might have bad teeth. Maybe he's British? Maybe that's why this made the list? Oi, guvna, bugger off. Yeah, this cover sucks. 1.5/5

Very familiar. One of the best hip hop albums of all time - followed up Check Your Head in the BB’s progression into more mature / thoughtful themes (religion, domestic violence, music history, social issues, etc) while also remaining funky as hell and super funny/fun.

Fuck yeah absolutely amazing sound

Know this album inside and out, no fair reviews, They can not put a foot wrong, every track is just solid start to finish.

Already reviewed this album, but it's still amazing to listen to!

though one of their earlier albums, by far one of the best.

yeah, that's about what i remember - takes me back, for sure. less baggage about the hangers-on now than i had back then, which is nice.

Shiiiiiiit. If this gonna be that kinda party, I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes.

So great. It quite five star but would get 9/10

I like the Beastie Boys, but this is definitely not their best album. There's some bangers here of course, like Sabatoge but there's quite a bit of filler on this album that didn't add anything. The sound is definitely dated, but there is still some novelty to it. Overall its pretty average, I know the Beastie Boys can do better.

Great bass and the instrumentals were really good. The rest was bonus.

Follow up album to Check Your Head. Saw the Beastie Boys at Col Ballroom on Aug. 13, 1992. One of my favorite albums. 1 of 1001

Lyrical distortion: Not a fan. Favorite Tracks: Root Down Sabotage Get It Together "Transition Tracks"

very good. I have more of an appreciation for beastie boys, everyone wronged me I swear. Sabotage goes harder than I remember, but freak freak goes hard hard. last quarter or so grew dull I think. hour long albums are hard to get through imo.

Probably my favorite Beastie Boys album. I love the contrast from Sure Shot to Sabotage.

I mean interesting but not great

I fucks with the beastie boys them and Eminem gr8 white rappers

Individual songs good, album as a whole became samey

I don't feel like this is their strongest outing. There are some great songs, there is also some flat monotony.

Nostalgic. Grew up 2nd hand listening to these albums from parents and older siblings. They had fantastic taste.

I had to power trough the first part. But the second part (sabotage and all after that were awesome).

The album can not make me feel the music. It is not intresting to me.

Amazing album

Loved the challenging and protesting lyrics but 2 songs performed at Glastonbury 1994 was enough for my ear drums.

Better than the other one

Sabotage is a good song, and so are the more chill instrumental songs like Ricky's Theme. We both listen to a lot of alternative music, but never the Beasty Boys. We didn't really like this one very much though...

Funky Jazz, scream hip-hop akin to a milder version of Rage Against the Machine (who was surely influenced), and hard-as-fuck punk rock songs. It's eclectic and definitely shines in the instrumental groovy songs.

Beastie Boys have such a unique sound. Great beats, great lyrics, catchy songs altogether.

Great songs, but the first half of the album is obviously the best.

A classic. I always forget how eclectic this record is, and how many instrumentals it has.

Awesome album. Great musicianship which I was not expecting. Got a little repetitive near the end. But cool style.

2.5. I like the beastie boys but would class myself as a greatest hits fan 😁

Interesting fusion of different musical styles. Will come back to this one

Grymma beats. Fantastiska interludes.

Not my favourite Beastie Boys album, but they get a 4 for nostalgia and my teenage crush on Ad Rock. This is a fun listen, they're such fun to listen to you don't really notice how damn good they were.

This album does have some of the Beastie Boys greatest hits. There sound is very unique and mix genres of rap, punk, rock, and blues. Sometimes incorporating classical string instruments. Would I want to own this full album? Probably not.

Great album. Beastie Boys have a special place in my heart despite the fact that I've never owned one of their albums. "Sabatoge," especially, puts this album over the top for me. 5 stars!

Liked Sabotage and Flute Loop the most, great hip hop album. Wasn't able t read lyrics like I would like to, need to revisit the album in order to get a better knowledge of it. 6/8 (NOT FINAL)

Loud and wacky. Good job boys.

This was an album that I haven't listened to in more than 20 years, so it's a strange experience coming back to it after all these years. It's interesting to see the different samples they were using on this album. Lots of jazz and funk influence. There's a lot more instrumentals in this than I remember. It's also pretty fun when they break out the hardcore punk for a song or two. It's a little strange listening to a rap album where my least favorite thing about it is the lyrics and still liking it, but the instrumentalism and diversity of sounds in this album really saves it 4/5

A lot of cool instrumentals. Great singles. At 59 minutes, it's long.

DOPE, I didnt know beastie boys had so much range, this album is punk funk rock and rap, insane

Time to get ill

Enjoyed this for sure. Long album but some fun songs although I couldn’t name them for sure.

4/5. BEASTIE BOYSSSSSSSS. I wish more rap/rock albums 1) existed and 2) were this good. So much energy in sabotage, great song to get hyped too!

Awesome. So much different musical styles in there.

Very strong vocal style. An unknown artist for me, but an amazing addition to my collection

Pretty nice

The sampling is *chef’s kiss*

Kova levy! Siisti tyyli tehdä hoppia ja poikkesi isosti valtavirrasta, arvostan.

meh except for sabotage

Enjoyed Sabotage but the rest wasn't for me. The odd musically interesting moment but mostly shouty annoying teenager sounding guys

Too intense for a work day

i like the beastyboys sound but im not a fan of rap overal so i get bored after a while

Todella kova levy tämäkin

Good time with this record.

Fun and loose. Showcases the Beastie's hardcore punk roots more than I'm familiar with. End of the album is kind of a drag. Favorite tracks: "Get It Together", "Do It", "Sabotoge"

Am I just hearing loudness or is there some real punk je ne sais quoi here? Either way, it's welcome and massively elevates the raps, which fade into the production in a way that is hard to do enjoyably. Length-wise the project seems a little bloated, but the instrumentals break it up enough to keep things fresh. Ending on one is an especially neat trick. There's clearly fun being had in the studio, but also what seems like genuine experimentation, deftly executed.

So close to five, I'd say a four, makes me re-evaluate my 4 for licensed to ill, that should definitely be a 3

Sabotage is always a classic

Kind of ok. Sure Shot is a fab, classic tune
