Album Summary
Raising Hell is the third studio album by American hip hop group Run-D.M.C., released on May 15, 1986, by Profile Records. The album was produced by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. Raising Hell became the first Platinum and multi-Platinum hip hop record. The album was first certified as Platinum on July 15, 1986, before it was certified as 3× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on April 24, 1987.Raising Hell peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, and number one on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart making it the first hip hop record reach atop the latter. The album features four hit singles: "My Adidas", "Walk This Way" (a collaboration with Aerosmith), "You Be Illin'" and "It's Tricky". "Walk This Way" is the group's most famous single, being a groundbreaking rap rock version of Aerosmith's 1975 song "Walk This Way". It is considered to be the first rap rock collaboration that also brought hip-hop into the mainstream and was the first song by a hip hop act to reach the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.Raising Hell has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 1987, it was nominated for a Grammy Award, making Run DMC the first hip hop act to receive a nomination. In the same year for this album Run-D.M.C. was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Rap Album at the 1987 Soul Train Music Awards. In 2018, it was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant". The album was reissued by Arista Records in 1999 and 2003. An expanded and remastered edition was released in 2005 and contained 5 previously unreleased songs. Selling more than three million copies, Raising Hell is credited with heralding the golden age of hip hop as well as hip hop's album era, helping the genre achieve an unprecedented level of recognition among critics.

We are all aware that Run-D.M.C have one of the best and most copied logos out there. It has been written about by German editorial academics in relation to its use as the basis for protest graphics around the world. Designed by Stephanie Nash, an in-house designer at Island records. She designed it as there was no available photos for the My Addidas promo and it became so popular that many have now claimed ownership, even though they weren’t in the room. Although this album is described as one of the most influential in rap I can’t get on with it. The single are memorable but I would never choose to play them. Sorry. Love the logo though.
Without exaggeration, the kings of the New York hip-hop scene. It’s not that Run-D.M.C. invented the genre, but rather that this album turned it into a mainstream phenomenon, propelling it onto major stages and MTV. They were welcomed with open arms everywhere — and for good reason: driving samples from rock and soul classics, skillful rapping, crisp scratching, and high-energy lyrics. But the real highlight is that rap-rock was born here through a cover of a hit by Aerosmith — a band that, at the time, had been somewhat forgotten. And who better to bridge these two genres than Rick Rubin, whose portfolio already included work with both the Beastie Boys and Slayer? No one believed it was possible; the artists themselves initially planned only to sample Aerosmith, but the result blew everyone away. I imagine the look on people's faces when they first heard "Walk This Way" was one of sheer astonishment: "Wait, you could actually do that?" So, the entire rap-core and nu-metal scene traces its roots back to this moment. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is for you to decide.
From Queens come Kings. All hail the Kings!
Hell yeah!
A watershed moment in hip hop. It’s obviously a product of its time, and sounds primordial next to the great rap albums of the 90’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s. That said, I can’t imagine what this sounded like to rap-virgin ears in 1986. The Aerosmith feature helped, I’m sure, or at least showed that the seemingly opposing genres of rap and rock can blend indeed. It’s a solid album throughout, even if the beats sound somewhat basic 40 years later. It’s Tricky is undeniable though: may that song live forever.
This made me feel like the coolest person in the world for 39 minutes

gran hip
This is such a fun album! I've listened to it before, and I'll listen to it again. A modern classic.
such a time capsule - i love being able to share it with felix and see him groove.
"It's Tricky" going into "My Adidas" and then "Walk This Way" is a legendary 3 song run. Outside of that run, I wasn't particularly grabbed by today's pick. An incredibly influential record due to how the group paired hip-hop with rock sounds, the production sounds dated with some of the rock riffs sounding awkward and amateur mixed into the beats. This record feels off its time, even if it paved the way for other acts to experiment with mixing rock and rap. The Beastie Boys wouldn't exist without this group, but I would listen to them over Run-D.M.C. any day.
Classic collection from the pioneers of hip hop.
Groundbreaking for its time, cute by today’s standards. Still a fun listen!
Run DMC - the acceptable face of hip-hop. As well as banging out some great beats, it helps they have a good sense of perspective, even while exuding all the requisite swagger.
3.5
A hit parade followed by a walk through an early hip hop fun house. It’s cheesy and super dated but I enjoyed my time (3.5/5)
I just don’t like the vocal tones / styles at all. Much prefer TCQ and Fugees, The Roots. Only held up by It’s Tricky and the production for me.
A classic. Set the template for the blend of beats, rhymes and guitars.
80s hip hop/rap is good. I respect it. There are objectively good tracks and rhymes. However, it just sounds so dated compared to any other era.
Obviously pioneering but, not having meant much to me at the time, it doesn't really hold much for me now. Doubt I'll return to it.
Not my Cup of tea
I find that the beginnings of hip-hop are very hard to judge for me. Do I think this album is good, no. But I'm looking at it through a modern lens. If I were around when this album first came out, it might have blown my mind. In the 80s, hip hop was just being birthed and RUN-D.M.C were at the forefront of the genre. But even 3-5 years later, there was better-produced, more complex, and more interesting music coming out of hip-hop. Even given the importance of this album, I have to say that it shouldn't be the top choice for your next listen.
not my type of music, but it's ok
Plenty of iconic hits but it’s a bit simplistic overall
This was one Cozy-Ass listen. I want to go play it again right now.
We showed the children the video to Walk this Way, and they were not impressed. “I hate this yelling one. Turn off this yelling one!” The disgust seemed to be directed at Steven Tyler, so there’s hope for them yet.
Entertaining and nostalgic.
There’s some super slick rhymes and these guys are masters and innovators of the craft. Gets a little repetitive over the course of a whole album. Others took the genre farther.
- Russell Simmons is a Zio and sexual abuser, so boycotting this. - The samples on this are undeniable. So good. - The flow is fun... the cadence is similar to Beastie Boys, but way smoother/less nasal. Some fun lyrics, too. - I'm less into the misogyny and Zio pedo Aerosmith guest feature.
Not for me but could definitely be worse.
Heard only part of it. Not my type of style.
I rarely give 5’s based on impact and influence, but this was a monumental album for rap/hip hop. I really enjoyed the tracks with guitar and rock beats, and while I don’t listen to much rap this one is worth a repeat.
strong start, worse as it goes on
This was a lot of fun but while the rapping was musically satisfying the words were not particularly meaningful
Love this album.
Really love this album, another one I have in my collection, it doesn’t get much better than this for your hip hop - awesome
Album cuts were slightly better than I expected. Not entirely my jam, but definitely consequential.
It’s tricky!
Literal parody-level lyrics ``You're silly dilly dumb and you're just plain stupid`` truly a capsule of cornball rap, but I guess it had to start somehwere. Please listen to you be illin` its hilariously bad like epic rap battles of history is goated compared to this. They keep reminding us what their names are like what are we doing an icebreaker game? As cliché as it is I can't help but bop my head at their slow intonation and alternating rapping between them. It's tricky is classic and catchy.
I like the flow, hip hop is still not necessarily my style, but it was fun.
Couple of absolute screamers. One song with cool drums. Sadly the lyrics sound like they are from a CBeebies show and 99% of the snare drum fills are more aggressive than a bull that’s really, reeeaaly had enough. Album title does not suit the music 😂 But I did have fun
4/10
3.5
Banger after banger!!! Exactly what I needed today :). Like surprisingly good, I guess I knew some of the most popular/famous songs of theirs but not enough to appreciate the craftsmanship. But also I’m going through a phase of quite energetic music so my body was craving something like this.
It’s Tricky is a super fun song but I didn’t care for this album much. Something about the production really doesn’t work for me.
For an influential album that everybody takes seriously, the second half sure sounds very unserious a lot of the time.
Listening to this album is like watching 40 years later an agent breaking out of his sandbox. What an historic experience!
Very of its time, for better and for worse. This is very representative of the sound of hip-hop at the time, straightforward bars and flows over drum-heavy beats. It's mostly fun, but it's not really built for the album format, as the formula for each song doesn't leave a whole lot of room for variety. Fortunately, Run and DMC are very charismatic vocalists, with a lot of fun chemistry and a great sense of humor. This especially comes through on more storytelling-focused tracks like You Be Illin and Dumb Girl. One of the most notable things about this album is how they incorporated rock samples into some of the songs. Rap rock isn't my favorite style but the guitars fit well with the heavy drums. Overall, this was fun, but I found it more interesting as a time capsule than something I'd actually revisit.
I want Adidas shoes now.
Esenciales.
does the beastie boy 'somebody starts the line and someone else ends it' but I ultimately enjoyed it here more than when the Boys(tm) do it. I really enjoyed It's Tricky, Raising Hell, and Walk This Way (of course lol) -- and you can definitely see how much influence it had over later hip hop music. You can definitely tell everyone's having a great time. It's got a great infectious energy!
I liked the beginning 4-5 songs better than the last few but that's cause they packed all the bangers in the front. My jaw dropped when Steven Tyler said "just give me some head" during 'Walk this Way". I guess I've only ever heard the radio edit before.
Favorite track(s): It's Tricky, Walk This Way, Raising Hell, You Be Illin'
I still like It's Tricky and I enjoyed the chiming Peter Piper. I also appreciate the importance this album had in helping hip-hop to fully break through into the mainstream. But it also pioneered one of the genre's more regrettable features with its shameless grifting for Adidas, who paid them well in return. I'm docking a star for being corporate shills.
Takes me back to the day, immediately. So fresh. :) GD that DJ made my day! Dumb girl is kind of a downer of a track but otherwise this is 1986 in a nutshell. Happy memories on the dance floor.
It's a damn good album.
Classic
I loved this. 4 Boolean: True
Not every song is fantastic but man is it a fun album and the best songs are super catchy. 4.5/5
Fine, but not 2 bad
Ah, those were the days, a simpler iller time, when I could follow the lyrics. Sure liked the pre-bitches and hos days. I can see where one might feel it doesn't have enough energy to compete with later hip hop efforts, but the foundational nature carries it.
There's no angle I can hear this from and enjoy it.
I remember when these guys came out. They were so stripped down compared to Grandmaster Flash that I didn't care for it. But that paved the way for so much of the hip-hop to come. it was cool listening to it this weekend, and although I liked it more, its stripped-down nature makes it seem very samey from song to song. Still, it's fun.
While a few lines made me laugh and a couple songs were nostalgic, this mostly sounded the same and wasn't as clever as I remembered.
Okaaay. Again a bit samey but fully respect how big it was at the time. Top bops: It’s tricky Raising hell
I don't know if I've ever actually listened to 'It's Tricky' in full but DAMN this is a bangerrrrr. THE AEROSMITH FEATURE??!! fuck that's good. The clonky drums in Is It Live??? the beat boxing in Hit It Run??? god I love the blend of rap and rock. this did not disappoint, a legendary album. if this was outta 10 I'd give an 8 maybe.
Pure energy. YUP this was something I needed as a pick me up. I LOVE hearing samples / influences on past & future music, and this had so many melodies that I have heard before. ASAP Rocky used the 'Dumb' vocal in his new album, and Brockhampton used the chorus in 'Perfection.' Fav songs: Is it Live, Walk this Way and It's Tricky
Catchy, i maybe get to like the hiphops. I'll give 3 atm
Some bangers, latter half not as good as the first half.
The energy here is fun because the lyrics are sincerely goofy and deadly serious. They manage to keep the hype rolling through 40 minutes, even if this is essentially an album of three standout crossover singles surrounded by relatively ordinary Run DMC tracks.
"its tricky" being iconic is kind of what is pulling the weight here the other songs were fine sounding but idk most raps weren't quite so memorable aside some of these people's names
Peter Piper It’s Tricky Walk This Way You be Illin’
Fun
This is just ok for me, some classics (tricky, walk this way, etc.) but not a group I return to a ton despite seeing their influence. I did like the sampling tho.
it was pretty good, totally put me back in the eighties
Such an iconic album
This is a classic. I always think track 1 should’ve been Tricky, but they didn’t consult me on that.
I really enjoy the energy of these guys every time
It’s a classic. One of the first. Light-hearted rap. The collab with Aerosmith to bring in some of the rock fans. It’s Tricky is so infectious. Loses steam now and then so not quite 5 stars.
Ehh I liked some of it
Maybe I listen to too much new music but the production of this album is so basic and it’s very crazy listening to this compared to even the most stripped down artist today
Original. Holds up well 40 years later. You be Illin
While there are some great songs here and there, it definitely felt kinda dated, this style of rap is not so palatable now. Great beats nonetheless.
Really good vibes here. The rhyming structure feels outdated, but it still works somehow.
Monumental hip hop album, phenomenal listening experience.
Run-D.M.C. showing how you can rap with clever lines. Braggadocio without endless lines about your monster cock. Can dis women "Dumb Girl" by highlighting behaviours not just calling them all "ho's". And more than just variations on these theme's., Oh I forgot the other theme "fuk the police". I enjoyed the album even though it's not really my thing.
Overall one of the better rap/hip-hop albums but I'd have liked more in the vein of 'It's Tricky' or 'Walk This Way' those tracks are something special. The rest of the album was OK, but quite forgettable for me Standouts It's Tricky Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith 3/5
I understand that respect must be paid to the originators of one of the most influential and popular genres of music to come out of America. I get it. I respect the hell out of them, truly, and there are some great songs here. They are critical to so much popular music as we know it. It’s just a repetitive, underwhelming listen as a whole. But it is fun to hear them go back and forth, trading bars and finishing each other’s lines, and the three track run from “It’s Tricky” through “Walk This Way” is pretty damn impressive. (“Walk This Way” belongs to Run-D.M.C. as far as I’m concerned and fuck Aerosmith forever and ever, amen.) And the beats are very late-80s while still being fun to listen to. I think this is my favorite of their records I’ve gotten.
