Frábært old school rapp!

I know a couple of songs off this. I don't mind a bit of 80s rap but this is close to the limit. It's mostly just them and drums. Started to get a bit samey. Pretty dated in 2021. 3/5.

A couple of ok tracks

I listened to this tape nonstop for a while as a kid. Peter Piper still holds up, as do many of the other tracks (Run's House!). So good.

I'm not a fan of the genre so I was surprised I found myself enjoying quite a few songs. The album was fun to listen. I'm still not a huge fan but it was a nice experience.

Average, the good is well know and the rest is fine, if not a bit samey

There is absolutely no question that this album has a great energy. Every song is delivered with fierce passion and gusto, like their lives are on the line. Every rhyme matters, every bar- and they demand you hear it. The songs this came through the most were "Peter Piper", (fab lyrics and that vocal interplay at the very start sets the tone perfectly), "It's Tricky", and "Hit it Run" (sounded like a Looney Tunes character beatboxing). The energy was infectious across all of these tracks and several more. The trouble was, when everything was pitched at the same energy level, I ended up longing for a bit more variety. Everything was at a similar pace and dynamic (mid-tempo, boom-bap drums) with impassioned, shouted vocals convincingly tying rap and rock together. Sampling was all fairly sparse (drums front and centre, occasional touches of electric guitar, scrubbing or horn samples). On first listen it ended up feeling repetitive and the dynamic feel established in the first four/five tracks started to peter out. More variety or better sequencing would have bumped this to an easy 4*- it's also a shame "Dumb Girl" put a misogynistic downer on things.

One of the best in the Genre. Heard this many times when it came out. Was really glad to hear it again today. Still as good as ever. 4/5.

compared against their contemporaries, run-dmc doesn't quite match up for me, but this is still better than any rap album today. really not a fan of their version of walk this way.

Enjoyed this a lot more than expected. ‘Perfection’ was particularly cool.

Oh yeah, this was pretty great! Sometimes listening to old school hip-hop can be a bit of a chore, as the rhymes can sound basic and dated, and the attitudes can be, uh, regressive, but this still sounded pretty fresh! I guess the amount of rock music being sampled (and the Aerosmith collab) make this much more accessible to my goblin-pale ass. In the version of the album I listened to there was a bonus track of them recording a commercial for some live dates, and they refer to themself as "Rap n' Roll", and YES, that's a great label! Fave track - all the singles were great - also liked "Proud to be Black" for the Tubman reference!

You can't love rap without loving RUN DMC. This album represents the best of RUN DMCs smart lyrics and seemless flow. Walk this Way may be the best Rap/Rock collaboration of all time.

This one's a dilemma, because you can hear in every track the enormous influence it had on hip-hop, in the production, the flow, the lyrics, and the many samples and references to Run DMC found in the genre. On the other hand, it doesn't strike me as an amazingly enjoyable album on its own terms. The beats, melodies and turntable techniques sound really good on some tracks, but too sparse on others. The lyrics are often simplistic with a nursery rhyme flow (and actual allusions to nursery rhymes). I'm sticking to my guns and not rating things by how influential they were. 3* for this.

Absolute trail blazers - great stuff. Hip hop has come a long way and so my one knock is that this does sound a little basic 35 years later. No denying its importance and impact though.

Oh man the drum machines on this! Especially the 808s! The interplay of the MCs sounds a little dated now but if you think about it that'd be hard as hell to pull off - like constantly doing alley-oops on the basketball court.

It's almost quaint compared to modern day hip-hop. "Walk This Way" and "It's Tricky" are great, but the rest of the don't do much. If the rest of the album was like those two, it would be a 4 or 5.

Run DMC has some of the most fun throwback tracks out there. The openers are definitely the strongest, but the whole thing is pretty nice.

10/10 energy. So many iconic samples that have been lifted from this album that your memory will recall throughout. So ahead of its time.

I had never listened to rap or hip hop before, so I was skeptical about this one. I decided to start out with the s/t before this album, and I pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the experience was. I ended up listening to early hip hop all day! This a must-listen for sure and I'll keep going back to this one. Peter Piper has some of the most creative and imaginative lyrics I've heard. It's Tricky is catchy and can jam to. My Adidas started off the partnerships with shoe brands. Walk This Way made hip hop mainstream (and re-popularized Aerosmith). All the other songs have their highlights. Hit It Run has interesting edits, Raising Hell is a banger, Proud to be Black is a powerful commentary, and You Be Illin is a humorous tie-in. It's a fun album that sets a direct tone and impact on the audience. There's a bit here and there for everyone.

For this album, once you've heard one song, you've heard them all. It's the stereotypical rapping with rhymes and alliteration that really don't have any purpose other than the fact that they rhyme or have the same sound. The background music is uninteresting, so you're only listening to the words. Favorite track: Walk This Way

Unsure if just dated or really that bad. Terrible cliche lyrics and terrible production on most tracks. Truly irritating kick drum plastered over almost every track. Only gets 2 because of Get Tricky being a classic

An absolute classic

Run DMC is on fire. Lyrics are so smooth, both MCs are locked in. JamMasyer Jay's beats are incredible. Flow is good for album choices. Great classic rap/hip hop group and album.

Interesting to hear some older hip hop. But, for me, too outdated.

I liked it more than I thought I would. A lot of the songs on the second half sound really similar, but the dustiness of the drums and the guitar made for a great combination for this record. Highlights: 1, 2, 4, 9, and 12.

Oh, such a fun album. Absolutely remember this spinning at many a party when it came out. One of the first rap groups I heard. Love the way they weave R&B, rock, and rap elements together.

Run DMC had been making waves already, but this is the album that helped them and Hip Hop cross-over to the mainstream. Loaded with iconic tracks, and oozing with swagger, this is a must for old school Hip Hop.

This was actually a lot more fun to listen to than I expected. Probably not one that I would actively revisit, but certainly a good experience in terms of broadening my perspective and appreciating music I wouldn't usually listen to. Rounded up from a 3.5 for that.

One of the great early rap albums. You Be Illin' is one of the earliest songs I remember listening to, and Walk This Way is just an insane rock/rap crossover. I understand that this had to come before all the other great rap, but I couldn't really get into this. It's Tricky has to be one of the most overrated songs I've ever heard (it's fine but nothing spectacular), and Dumb Girl is one of the worst early rap songs I've ever heard. Brings it down from a near 3 to a 2.

Thought I’d love this album but for some reason it fell short of expectations. A few really great tracks in there - It’s Tricky, My Adidas, Walk this Way - but ultimately the other tracks just blended into one another. I’ve always felt with Run DMC that if you’ve heard one of their tracks you’ve heard them all. I get their importance in hip hop and you wouldn’t have bands such as The Beastie Boys without them, but I’d just rather listen to the Beastie Boys. Pioneers no doubt, but there’s a reason I’ve never really listened to a full Run DMC album before.

These guys are also absolute pioneers of an entire genre and played a key role in bringing it to the mainstream, with some of the tracks from this album at the heart of that. Some people might say inventing rap/rock was perhaps not the greatest gift to music 😂 but the impact of their cover of Walk This Way is immeasurable. Plus it's pure vibes as a listening experience! 9/10

An album with some absolute classics. And one that brought hip hop into mainstream culture. I didn't find it quite as enjoyable as Digital Underground but that's personal preference. Still a gazillion times better than Bon Jovi though!

Listened to today’s twice. Great stuff especially the first 4 songs. Couple of ones I didn’t like in the 2nd half of the album, but overall a cracker. Mad it came out 35 years ago. Might have to purchase!

Nice and funky, enjoyed listening to this. Highlight is the opening track 'Peter Piper'. Sound of the time again like DJ Shadow though.

“Raising Hell” by Run-DMC (1986) As a musical product, the work begs to be examined for its commercial strategies with Adidas and Aerosmith. Lyrics are marginally interesting but rather unaccomplished rhyme play expressing comic boastfulness. Variations on the theme “We’re so good at what we do”. The only serious lyric on the album is “Proud to Be Black”, but even it lacks depth. I do like the line in this song “I’ll say it in a rap because I do not sing.” Significant explanatory power here. This album seems to be a successful attempt to bring hip hop into the mainstream, mostly by jettisoning the seriousness, violence, and obscenity (mostly) that gave rap its honesty and artistic power. Call it hip pop. Meh. Nevertheless, it’s well executed and moderately entertaining for a listen or two. 3/5

WoW quelle œuvre qui vieilli mal!! Je suis sûr que le plus grand fan de l’album en 1986 n’est pas capable de l’Ecouter au complet aujourd’hui sans skipper. Même si on essaie de mettre l’œuvre en perspective sur ton époque on serait capable d’écouter l’album sans nausée. Si je suis le premier à chier mauve demain, ça reste de la marde. Je lévite: la toune d’aerosmith, une chance ils sont là Je l’évite; run de cette album la !!!

The cover of Walk This Way charted higher than Aerosmith's original and is one of the most important and pivotal tracks in hip-hop history and I would gladly give this album 8 stars if I could for that track alone. Also I wish the honkies that run this thing would give us more rap and hip-hop.

3.5 | El primer album de hip-hop que fue un verdadero éxito gigante. Tiene mucha importancia tanto por el parteaguas comercial que abrió como musicalmente. Se siente realmente como el apogeo de ese estilo de rap ochentero que se arrastra desde las fiestas en el Bronx en los 70s; esa cadencia llega a su punto máximo aquí y se comienza a mezclar con una mayor variedad de ritmos incluyendo de manera importante el rock. A partir de aquí empezará a cambiar mucho la escena, esta ya por llegar Ice Cube a imponer otro nuevo estilo con el gangsta rap pero por estos momentos aun se puede sentir ese punto más alto de lo que era la "nueva escuela" del rap que estaba ahora enfilando su salida. En cuanto a sus detalles siempre he sentido que DJ Run musicalmente era competente en tanto que DMC era un excelente MC. Los ritmos se sienten clásicos de la época con creo en mi opinión 6 canciones que son espectaculares en su creatividad y el resto que aunque buenas pueden sentirse estándar. Esas 4 canciones iniciales serían muy difícil de mantener durante todo el disco pero el cambio de calidad si llega a sentirse un poco hacia el final. Un disco muy importante, vital no solo para entender cómo evolucionó el hip-hop sino mucha parte de la música en general. Siento tan puntual el disco que casi se me olvida hacer mención sobre como fue la razón de que Aerosmith reviviera y pudiera volver a tener una carrera importante siendo que ya se les consideraba en muchos aspectos una banda olvidada. Me gustaría poner más puntuación quizá pero he de aceptar que no ha envejecido de la manera más grácil y quizá para quien no gusta del estilo le puede parecer repetitivo en unos aspectos. De todas formas sin duda un gran disco que 100% pertenece a esta lista.

Interesante la combinación de secuencias e instrumentos, rap combinado con un par de solos (medio feos). Las letras no son impresionantes pero tampoco buscan serlo. Las mitad de las canciones me parecieron buenas pero la otra mitad donde es la misma secuencia me hartaron. Independientemente de que me haya gustado o no, me parece un gran disco debut aunque pareciera que a partir de la quinta canción sólo son canciones medio olvidables. 2.5 estrellas que baja a dos porque no me lo volvería a aventar de corrido. Great album, not every song is for me, but a good majority so far are. They do have a same-y way of rhythm, but it works very well The title track "raising hell" is my favorite Nobody could write "you be illin" today, it wouldn't work, but because Run DMC have so much talent and charisma, it's one of the better tracks

It's funny how the tracks on this album I don't remember seem to have influenced the Beastie Boys. I totally wore this cassette out as a kid listening to certain songs.

Appreciate it for what it was at the time and what it did for its genre but found it very basic.

A classic, defining album in hip hop history. One of the first mainstream albums that lead us to hip hop as we know it today. Wonderful MCs with masterful production from two of the best to ever do it.

Man I finally understand why Duane doesn't like Run DMC, they're fucking boring and cheesy as hell. They're BBoys with the same schtick for each song, and so damn little to like. Despite what they rap about, I still feel like they're gonna hit me with an after-school special.

Today's album is Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C from 1986. I was 12 years old when this album came out and I remember watching the famous video on MTV where Aerosmith bashes through the wall and becomes part of the track. For most of my life, Run-D.M.C was not a big part of my musical education. In my later life, I started working my way back through the 'golden age' of rap and learning how it all started. Boogie Down Productions quickly became a favorite artist, and I pretty much ignored the music put out by Run-D.M.C. After giving this an honest listen, I get how much they and Rick Rubin influenced hip-hop from the get go. It's like they were kind of a joke by the time I became aware of them. The Addidas and the blingy image, threw me off taking them seriously. If my Dad listened to rap at the time in the late 80s, it would have been his old-man music by the time I turned 18 in 1992. My Dad listening to rap is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. I also got turned off my reality TV and "reverend run" and all the sexual assualt allegations about his brother Russell. I appreciate this album and it definitely holds up. Stripping away all the context, and trying to pretend this is the first time I've ever heard this album - makes it really shine.

There are literally books written about the story and significance of the 3rd studio release by the New York duo Run-D.M.C. Going into this album I had already heard the first couple of tracks countless times. Growing up and recording "Walk this Way" on a tape was a proud moment when I finally got a good cut without radio announcer. Today I focused on the beats and lyrics of the album, and honestly beyond the significant singles you may already know, I wasn't too impressed with their "B-sides." A few throw away tracks like Perfection and Dumb Girl to me weighted the album down, although to be fair I could hear how these more fraternity raps would lead way to the Beastie Boys down the line. What really gives this album a homerun is the last track Proud to be Black. If the lines in Dumb Girl made me doubt their lyrical skill, Run-D.M.C. proves themselves with Proud to be Black. After all this album wasn't significant in the history of music solely for it's lyrics, but its combination of rock and hip hop. With Aerosmith at the peak of their career they shared the spotlight with two rappers out of New York, and the rest is history. 4/5

RUN-DMC me gusta, noto en este disco aún que son muy repetitivos en sus sampleos. El atino de walk this way sin duda fue un impulso tanto en su carrera como en la de un Aerosmith que ya se estaba apagando pero no hubiera sido posible ni la canción ni el disco sin la ayuda de Rick Rubin (Vamos a ver varios discos en esta lista en los que está involucrado).

3.5 pero redondea a 4 porque es viernes. Como de costumbre, no soy fan del Hip Hop, pero hasta en eso hay clases y honestamente este tiene varias cosas rescatables. Me gustó mucho la primera rola (Peter Piper) y por supuesto Walk This Way, que marcó época en más de un sentido. Me gustó todavía más la que samplea a My Sharona (It's Tricky) porque es mi casi-one-hit-wonder favorito. Por otro lado, no me gustaron nada las dos con las que cierra y eso le quitó el .5 que de todos modos le redondeé por barco.

If you’re going to pick hip hop/rap albums as the Mount Rushmore of influence, this album would be on there. Seamlessly melding rap and rock to create a hybrid that really had not been heard before, Run-DMC and Rick Rubin produced a sound that would be copied, chopped, skewed and scrambled into different hip hop records for years to come. This album may sound a bit dated, but that the time it was groundbreaking. Favorite song: My Adidas Least favorite song: I get sick of Walk This Way a lot

Pretty rad

Classic RUN-DMC! I enjoyed this album and to be honest I normally listen to this style of music. It was an awesome flash back to my younger years listening to this. If I had to recommend an album for RUN-DMC it would be this album.

The album that brought rap to the mainstream and it sounds like it. Rapping over rock guitars on the title track, and King of Rock from previous album, is still awesome, and better than the more famous Walk this Way. Some of the boasting gets repetitive, and some songs lean a bit heavy on the misogyny.

Another album that I've never heard all the way through. I've already stated that hip hop isn't normally in my wheelhouse, but this one is objectively great and definitely deserves a place on this list. 5 stars.
