Album Summary

Lust for Life is the second solo studio album by American musician Iggy Pop, released on September 9, 1977, through RCA Records. It was his second collaboration with English musician and friend David Bowie after The Idiot, released in March the same year. Shortly after Bowie released his own album Low in January, Pop went on a tour to support The Idiot with Bowie as his keyboardist. At the tour's conclusion, Pop and Bowie regrouped in Berlin to record the former's next solo album. Lust for Life was recorded at Hansa Studio by the Wall in West Berlin from May to June 1977, with production being handled by Bowie, Pop, and engineer Colin Thurston. The touring band of Pop, Bowie, guitarist Ricky Gardiner, and brothers Tony Fox and Hunt Sales on bass and drums, respectively, comprised the primary lineup for the album. After The Idiot was mostly composed by Bowie, Pop was adamant about having more control over Lust for Life, often composing his own arrangements, including for "Sixteen". This resulted in a hard rock and proto-punk sound more akin to his older style with the band the Stooges. Pop would use Bowie's arrangements for some songs, including the well-known title track. Upon release, Lust for Life received little promotion from RCA but nevertheless peaked at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart and remained Pop's highest-charting album there until 2016's Post Pop Depression. It also peaked at number 8 in the Netherlands and number 120 on the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart. Critically, Lust for Life was well-received, with many praising Pop's energetic performance throughout and his greater role compared to The Idiot; the former would later be regarded as one of his best works and has appeared on several best album lists. It also marked Pop and Bowie's final collaboration until the mid-1980s.

Great music. Sus lyrics and themes in places. Sixteen b2b with Some Weird Sin.

My life has two chapters. Before hearing “Turn Blue” and after. 🙄

This is more of what I envision when I hear Iggy Pop's name. After "The Idiot", which honestly didn't really feel like it was much of Iggy Pop's work, we get a return to the pure hard/punk rock that Pop made a name for himself for with The Stooges. Bowie is still involved here too, of course, as the two were VERY close during this time. "Turn Blue" is a strange change of pace in the middle, but the rest varies from fine to great. Slightly better than "The Idiot", but I can't find myself rating this a 4 for some reason.

Loved it-two classic tracks and an extraordinary voice

How could an album containing Lust for Life and The Passenger not score highly? The standout songs among a raw, high energy collection. Lust for Life, the anthem of survival.

A cracking start and the Bowie influence really comes through. Would definitely listen again

First time of listening and there's a lot to like. The punk energy is fantastic and the songs are just the right side of 'interesting'. Just not quite good enough to get 4* after one spin. 3*

A flipping good rock album. Compare this to fun house and you can see how flexible iggy pop can be with the sounds he tries to create.

Meh… underage sex song…

Solid. Don't think I'll be relistening but I get the appeal. Kind of gives me Velvet Underground Vibes.

Passenger and Lust for Life are classics, the rest of the album. Okay, not sure I would listen to them again though.

Have the kids these days fully kicked the junk, or is it all just happening behind closed doors? As far as strung out cool kids go, in the 21st century I can only really think of Amy Winehouse, Lil Wayne and Pete Doherty, and Doherty is a reach as a 'cool' kid. Before 2000 you've got Kiedis (ewww), Cobain, scott Weiland, all of motley cru, Bowie, Lou Reed, Jim Morrison, Keith Richards etc etc etc. Maybe everyone is getting clean, this kind of staggering, short off, drugged out, shout rock isn't happening any more. And that's a shame, the world is running out of cool New York types who can somehow command a room without having any power beyond a glassy look in their eyes and a needle backstage. It's a strong 4, it might be a 5 when I lie down in a bean bag in my derelict and stare at the ceiling for 7 hours.

Good vibes. I do like The Passenger.

4/5. Did not realize iggy pop was in the stooges but you can really hear it

Such a classic album, and is there anything else I can say about this that you don't already know? Me thinks no.

I liked this a lot more than I expected. Knew the name Iggy Pop but never really heard any of his music before this

Si no tuviera la puta basura de sixteen serían 5 estrellas

Hey, it’s the dad to Sleigh Balls Texis! Nothing quite matches Lust for Life, but jaunty Iggy is still fun

I knew there must be an Iggy album out there I would like. This is it. Great tunes, including the ones I didn't know!

Kind of rock and roll!

Pretty interesting. Better than his early stooges stuff, I think. Better the more you listen

Absolutely love this album I like the stooges albums but I like this more its just such a good listen Iggy nails it I think passenger is one of my all time fav songs every track on here just rocks, so good

I wanted to adore this but outside of the hits, and a few others, it was just okay. His other albums, his Stooges work, his other Bowie collaborations, are all far superior (which is a very high bar). It’s fine, not great.

Pretty indistinguishable punky rock

It's good but I think stooges Iggy is the best

Can see how it shapes and influenced music after it so that was cool

not bad. Killer song in "Lust for Life" and a couple other good ones.

This was a very interesting listen. I actually heard BOTH Lust for Life AND The Passenger, never knowing who did either song, and they were both off the same album! Success was my favorite song on the album. Overall it was good, not great. I never loved the production or rawness of his sound, but I have always loved the energy.

This alblum is the definition of Chris's average in so many ways. Some songs like enjoyed, some ideas could do without. Would turn it off if it was on but wouldn't seek it out.

Surprisingly enjoyed this whole album. I would buy this and listen to it periodically

I’m glad I had an album by The Stooges first. I really like this a lot more, though. It’s like a mix between The Doors and The Rolling Stones, but with a bit of David Bowie flair. I actually like the track “Sixteen” the most, which I found out is the only track on the album that Iggy Pop wrote entirely on his own. So that bodes well for my opinion of him as an artist. I look forward to discovering more from him. Songs added to my liked list: Lust for Life, Sixteen, The Passenger, and Turn Blue.

Very familiar with the title track and the Passenger, but have never heard this album. So I'm very pleased to report that the rest of the tracks are not mere filler but are almost as strong. I'm other words a great album!

Fine. A little too old school for me but a few good songs on there.

Better than The Stooges (which surprised me) and there are some songs which are real keepers (especially The Passenger). But I have to say I prefer Bowie (who is present on some of these songs). Apparently Iggy Pop and David Bowie were pals and some of Bowie's songs like China Girl are actually covers of Iggy Pop songs - super ironic since the Bowie version is MUCH better.

Very good album. Gonna get it on vinyl. (Listened to it on Apple Music)

In high school I had an English teacher that was obsessed with Iggy and the Stooges. Posters all over the wall by his desk and everything. I'm not sure why, but I never took up his recommendation to give them a listen, probably because in those days it would have meant shelling out $20 on a CD. Since then I've heard a bit of Iggy's stuff, Lust for Life is familiar as is The Passenger. The rest of this album is fine. It gets a little off on Turn Blue but finds its way back (not surprisingly that track has the lowest number of plays). I'm not rushing out to invest in Iggy Pop posters to adorn my office, but this was fine enough to inspire some exploration into the rest of his catalog.

Even though a lot of this material was written by David Bowie, it also gives me intermittent vibes of Lou Reed (not complimentary). "Turn Blue" feels a bit like Frank Zappa, and "Fall In Love With Me" sees Pop doing his best Jim Morrison. These are chunky rock songs with a good band and a not-that-good vocalist. They're well-played and -produced, and are more musically interesting than they initially sound, but they tend to run on rather longer than they need to.

I did not like most of this, the passenger is a great song though

I can tell David Bowie helped worked on this album. Sixteen and Turn Blue were the 2 worst songs on the album. 3.2/5 Favorite Songs: Lust For Life Some Weird Sin The Passenger Tonight Success

Yeah that's Iggy alright. dontbeapedodontbeapedodontbeapedo

a decent listen... if you ignore the lyrics

Brzmi jak porady życiowe nawalonego w 3 dupy wujka z Ameryki

This is the first time I've listened to an entire album of Mr. Pop's. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. He's pretty cool. ★★★★

It's pretty nice, a few catchy songs.

This is something that happens sometimes. An artist will get on a hot streak where everything they touch turns to gold and so they throw up artificial roadblocks to their own success because they still want to be challenged. Sometimes the challenge is driving themself crazy making one great opus, like Songs in the Key of Life. Sometimes the challenge is working in another genre like Garth Brooks becoming Chris Gaines. Sometimes it’s working under a pseudonym like Stephen King’s Richard Bachman books. But one of the challenges artists on a hot streak set for themselves is trying to transfer their Midas touch to someone else. Prince did it with the Time; McCartney and Harrison did it with Badfinger; Nikes Rogers did it with Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. Bowie did it with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople. Sometimes it works. I hate everything Barbara Streisand has ever done except her performance in “Funny Girl” (she absolutely crackles with electricity in that movie, it’s something to see) except her song “Guilty” with Barry Gibb which is the sexiest song ever by two people who are diametrically opposed to the very concept of sex appeal. I also hate almost everything Barry Gibb has ever done or been a part of but he was truly on a hot streak in the late-70s and early-80’s, even if he is not an artist I enjoy. Anyway, even though I think Bowie could have put his hot streak to better personal use than Low and the other Berlin albums, dude undeniably had a hot hand at this time. Lust for Life could have been up there with my favorite Bowie albums if he had put his name on it instead of doing it in collaboration with Iggy Pop. And even with Iggy Pop performing these Bowie songs, they’re still pretty decent. Lust for Life is better than the Stooges records I’ve been subjected to and better than The Idiot, even though Iggy is supposed to have had more input on Lust for Life than The Idiot. I’ve never been a genius who feels like making art comes too easily and so has to find new mountains to climb, but I have listened to a lot of albums by those people, and my advice is that if you ever find yourself in that position, be very careful what you do in that period. It may feel like you are unstoppable, but you are going to be stopped, if by nothing else then by the passage of time. Your hot hand is going to cool off one day and may never come back. That firehose of creativity is going to slow to a trickle. The thing that came so easily to you when you were on is one day going to be impossible. So when you’re in the zone, make good choices about how you use that time. But maybe that’s not an option. Maybe the side quests are load-bearing. Maybe the artist has to follow their passion and if they don’t then it will leave them and they don’t get to choose where it leads them. In that case, I guess they should go the Bowie/Iggy Pop/Lou Reed route. Don’t kill the golden goose. If your genius wants to go a weird direction, pack your bag and go along for the ride, even if that ride is trying to make Iggy Pop listenable.

Lots of great stuff here. Title track is overplayed arguably, but great. "Some Weird Sin" is great too. "The Passenger" is an all-timer for me. "Success" is awesome too. You can hear Bowie's touch but it's more hard rock than much of the Bowie I've heard.

I like raw power so excited to listen to this.

J’aime pas trop le style diggy pop

Not really my style, but not bad either. I definitely liked Some Weird Sin, Tonight, and Fall In Love With Me, although some of the songs i didn’t like much at all.

I'm not a fan of Iggy Pop and I had to drag myself to listen to this album. How wrong was I? It's a great record, some tubes, variations. I realy liked it. Favorite Songs: Lust For Life ; The Passenger

The hits are great. The rest is solid. I'm glad music has moved on from about lusting over 16-year olds. Which means I'm rounding down.

Jesus, this is bad.

Good, but he gives me weird vibe.

Ok. The Passenger is a banger but not a ton else here for me.

No hate to Mr. Pop but you look scary as hell on the cover dude. Lower your eyelids a little big dog. Oh wait no the coke my bad. Is the first track instrumental?? Really dude?? Nevermind. I love Bowie. This guy moved in with Bowie to get sober?? Now I don't know much about Bowie's life in the 70s but I wouldn't have described him as abstaining. Idk just me though. This is fun. He's got a lust for life I hear. Hmm idk if I like this ngl. This is kinda weird. I'm not sure if I like it. Lust for sin?? That's a sin already big dog you're halfway there. He's the passenger I've heard. Maybe I really do just like Bowie since he's Bowie. But he's actually good. This lacks some sauce. May be the homosexuality. Lowkey unremarkable. I think I'm too low brow for this project. He shat himself? Favourite: Neighbourhood Threat Least favourite: Sixteen

All right, this was so funny, such a funny and energetic album, full of so many great songs and melodies. I can also notice a very Bowie sound in here, no wonder he is a producer of the record (as well as a friend and collaborator of Iggy at the time). But it stands on its own, so originally varied and wonderful, with so many fantastic tracks, so unique too. I've loved it, how it is ironic, and so interesting too. And so enjoyable overall.

I’ve gone through a few listening patterns so far on this project. Currently I’m in a bit of a kick of letting a weeks or so’s worth pile up and then listening to a bunch of albums over the course of a day or two to catch up. Listening to albums in bunches is just fun. So for today’s catch-up, going Stooges - Peter Gabriel - Iggy Pop all in a row…well this is your standard shit sandwich. Iggy was scratching an itch today, so all the more happy to get a double dose. Lust for Life is a very different sort of beast from Raw Power, but no less fun to listen to. Full marks, Iggy! Now don’t rest on your laurels.

I first heard The Passenger in some skateboarding montage, when I was an impressionable little moron. Both the song and the skating fired some spark in my tiny brain. It was like peaking through a cracked window and getting a glimpse of a whole new world. One of those little moments that lead to other little moments that end up changing your whole life.

You know what? We don't appreciate Iggy Pop enough. The Passenger is frankly just one of the coolest songs out there, and this is a five star album based on that alone. But Lust For Life, Turn Blue, and Neighborhood Threat? Also all fantastic. Just one of the coolest to do it next to Bowie.

Once again rounding up a solid 2.5 album… this album is a schizophrenic bombardment with a few great songs and a lot of filler… iggy pop is a caricature of the classic idea of a drug fuelled rock star, but without the unique talent to ever be anything more than a guy who sang a couple of really good songs; but even that is an achievement… once you’ve heard this albums title track, and the passenger… there’s really nothing left of any interest, unless you want to listen to iggy doing a bad Bowie impression.. all that said the song “lust for life” is an all time great song and can lift me up on even the darkest days

It is definitely a hybrid of Iggy and Bowie, I can hear Stooges and even some straight forward rock version of Ziggy in the mix... with maybe some flashes of what Bowie would be doing on *"Heroes"* (9.2) ★★★★½

Not usually my favourite genre, but this is done really well. 4 stars

This is not only my favorite Iggy Pop album, but I think it's also one of my favorite Bowie projects. I think the two really compliment each other really well. Where the Idiot was more Bowie's show and Iggy was mostly along for the ride, it seems like this was more a genuinely collaborative project, with the rest of the band having some input too. As a result, it's a little more eclectic than their previous album, but I think that's a good thing. I think most people know the title track and probably "The Passenger" from this album, but I think the deeper cuts are really great as well -- "Tonight", "Success", "Neighborhood Threat", and "Some Weird Sin" are all really cool too. 5 stars.

Lust For Life is classic. The Passenger is classic. Rest is kinda garbage. It’s all mainly songs about turning blue from heroin or having hots for sixteen year olds. Again Iggy’s vocals are often pretty wretched and it is down to David Bowie for any bits of music that are decent. I’d probably dump this from the list and select the Trainspotting soundtrack instead.

Buen album, muy de los 80

I didn’t like it was just kinda boring for me and repetitive

Overall good album with a few stand outs - there were a few songs that i felt dragged but overall entertaining album

Favorite songs: Lust for Life, Some Weird Sin, The Passenger, Tonight, Success, Neighborhood Threat

Like a less tunefully sung Bowie, you can hear his influence. A bit repetitive, the second half of the album picks up and has some nice instrumental touches.

a few great tracks

Great album

Way too old for my liking. Voice is umbearable and instrumentals are boring

How many Wikipedia entries for these records will contain references to "13-year old groupies?" The fact that the number is even one, kind of makes me want to vomit. Say it with me everybody! Come on!! It was the 70's! Now shrug and try not to think about a pre-teen being wooed by future shirtless punk grandpa Iggy Pop. WE are a society built by and for morally bankrupt predators. If you're not one of those things, you are likely also under some sort of boot right now, and my heart goes out to you. Anyway, lets listen to the pedophile - sorry - "paedophile" (keepin' it British for the list's sake). Yes, he also has a song called Sixteen, so this really is an ode to fucking kids. Listen, I weas disgusted by Motorhead's moronic "Jailbait" the other day, but with the credible report of a relationship with a child, this one is decidedly unlistenable. Plus Iggy Pop is a weird, dork with a punchable face regardless of sex crimes. Good music from bad people. Get out of my face. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: Clock's tickin' old man

Bro looks like he's screaming internally. This is a low 4

The singles are great on this and you can really hear Bowie's influence but a lot of the album didn't stick quite as much. Also a little too much of the I like very young women songs 3.5

I am glad Iggy has a lust for life, but for the life of me, I can’t see why we need to hear from him. It seems like he is far more interesting as a character than as an artist or musician. Sadly, I think this represents another way the algorithm can insert more Bowie into the list. I don’t get it.

Not my cup of tea. Passenger was okay.

The Passenger was good. The rest was pretty bland and boring. I have heard good things about Iggy Pop for years. People talk about him like hes a legend. With the exception of one song this whole album was uninspired.

It is elevated by strong singles in The Passanger and Lust for life and it has tracks I would come back to in Tonight, Success and Neighbourhood Threat but the rest is a brand of mid 70’s art rock / proto punk that does not do much for me, the production is muddy and some of the tracks don’t know if they want to be punk or pop and miss both. 3.4

Really amazing singles and there are some other solid tracks in here too.

boring sounds and if i dont care for the music its hard for me to care for the lyrics

The Passenger - вообще величие. шедевр. А вот что я открыл для себя сегодня: Some Weird Sin, Sucess, Fall In Love With Me, Tonight - ахуй. Короче, это медятина, это ноускип, это база. Слушать и наслаждаться.

One of my favorite albums of all time.

Hypnotizing Chickens.

I love his stuff with The Stooges, and I like his later solo stuff, but this early solo content was rough with the exception of maybe two tracks.

Whooff. I like some Iggy Pop songs a lot. They weren’t on this album. A song he put out in the last like decade or so Gardenia is a top 10 of mine, so it’s not like he didn’t eventually make stuff I like

At least we got a good MC Lars song outta this.

I am not lusting for this

Excellent. Obviously Passenger and Lust for Life are classics but the whole album you can feel the Bowie glam rock influence.

Success is the best song on the album

Ikke helt min kopp med te, men helt greit og et par bra låter

Musics changin!

A phenomenal album from one of the most underrated artists of all time. While given credit by many of the 70s/80s punk and grunge bands popular culture tossed him on a pile with other semi-banned artists. Long live Iggy.
