Wow, I thought I knew Iggy Pop based on the radio play he had in my younger days. A very different sound and atmosphere than I expected. Some of the songs have a 50s b-bop sound. All of the lyrics and vocals can be understood. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Every time I catch Iggy Pop's radio show I am so grateful (and partly amazed) that he's still with us.
I just like rock music, 5/5, also this is the Stooges guy and I like that band
Hell yeah, I know the title track and Siouxsie and the Banshees version of "The Passenger" but I've never listened to this album (despite intending to for ages). This is fucking great, Iggy and Bowie making sick garage glam hit after hit.
Like the diversity of his music. Fun.
I love especially The Passenger
what can i do
This was a bop. I was hooked, Lust for Life had me going “oh it’s THAT song!” And I had Passenger on repeat several times. Listened through the whole album at least 4 times. The music fantastic and Iggy can sing! 5/5 hypnotized chickens.
Oh yeah, Iggy! Killer album. Likely a top 5 album for me.
masterpiece
Loved it! Two classics but some great songs across the album and it’s a concise listen.
One of the best to ever do it, genuinely one of the best albums of the 70s
I LOVE THIS ALBUM!
escuchado
I really liked this. Great production, weird but catchy singing, upbeat and high energy. 9/10
Great album - always loved Lust for Life and the Passenger!
4.7
Probably my most listened to album.
classic rock
Ja, Ja der Passenger 👍
Driving and energetic. It must be one of the earliest 80's rock albums. No such thing a s too much Bowie, at least not in 1977.
cool!
Wow. I knew of Iggy Pop but hadn’t associated him with so many iconic songs. Really enjoyed that!
Lyrics: One of the standout features of "Lust For Life" is its lyrical content. The album is a departure from Iggy Pop's darker, more chaotic themes on previous works, offering a more optimistic and upbeat perspective. The title track, "Lust For Life," is a celebration of vitality and the sheer joy of being alive. Iggy Pop's lyrics exhibit a newfound sense of self-awareness and maturity, coupled with his signature raw, energetic delivery. The tracks range from introspective to rebellious, showcasing a variety of emotions and experiences. Music: The musical landscape of "Lust For Life" is diverse, drawing from rock, punk, and pop influences. The opening title track sets the tone with its iconic drumbeat and infectious guitar riff, creating an anthemic sound that resonates throughout the album. The guitar work, often characterized by simple yet effective riffs, complements Iggy Pop's vocals perfectly. Songs like "The Passenger" demonstrate a more melodic and experimental side, showcasing Iggy's ability to navigate different musical territories while maintaining a cohesive sound. Production: David Bowie's influence on the production of "Lust For Life" is undeniable. The collaboration between Bowie and Iggy Pop resulted in a cleaner, more polished sound compared to Iggy's previous solo efforts. The album's production captures the essence of the late '70s punk and rock scene, emphasizing a raw, unfiltered energy while still delivering a more accessible and radio-friendly product. The decision to record in Berlin added a unique atmospheric quality, contributing to the album's distinctive sonic palette. Themes: "Lust For Life" explores themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the pursuit of pleasure. The album marks a departure from the self-destructive themes prevalent in Iggy Pop's earlier work, reflecting a newfound sense of optimism and acceptance. Tracks like "Success" delve into the complexities of fame, while "Some Weird Sin" explores the darker corners of the human psyche. The juxtaposition of light and dark themes contributes to the album's depth, providing a multi-dimensional listening experience. Influence: The influence of "Lust For Life" extends far beyond its initial release, leaving an indelible mark on the punk and rock genres. The title track, in particular, has become an anthem for vitality and exuberance, permeating popular culture through its use in films, commercials, and sporting events. Iggy Pop's collaboration with David Bowie on this album solidified both artists' legacies and played a crucial role in shaping the sound of late '70s rock. Pros: Energetic and Uplifting: "Lust For Life" is a sonic burst of energy, driven by infectious rhythms and uplifting melodies. Lyrically Rich: Iggy Pop's lyrics showcase a newfound maturity and introspection, adding depth to the album's thematic content. Innovative Production: David Bowie's influence on production contributes to the album's unique sound, blending raw punk energy with a polished finish. Diverse Musical Styles: The album explores a range of musical styles, from punk anthems to more experimental tracks, showcasing Iggy Pop's versatility. Cons: Uneven Pacing: While the album is cohesive, some listeners may find the pacing uneven, with the energetic highs occasionally interrupted by slower, more introspective tracks. Limited Variation in Vocal Style: Iggy Pop's vocal delivery, though powerful and expressive, maintains a consistent style throughout the album, potentially limiting its appeal to a broader audience. Conclusion: "Lust For Life" is a landmark album that not only defines a pivotal moment in Iggy Pop's career but also stands as a testament to the enduring power of punk rock. With its infectious energy, diverse musical styles, and meaningful lyrics, the album remains a timeless classic that continues to resonate with listeners across generations. While it may not be without its flaws, the overall impact and influence of "Lust For Life" on the rock genre make it a must-listen for anyone interested in the evolution of punk and the dynamic collaboration between two music legends.
Iggy Pop has always been untouchable - on a different plane. If anything cool is happening in music it’s because Iggy set the tone. I would guess that for most millennials like me, awareness of Iggy Pop started with Trainspotting where Danny Boyle used the title track of this album expertly. (Now that track is on cruise ship commercials, but that’s another story.) But of course anybody who was worth listening to in the 90s would was only so because of The Stooges. The solo stuff is not quite as tough as the Stooges, but damn is it good. I just watched Gimme Danger a month or so ago. The takeaway from that doc was that nobody really knew what to do with The Stooges when they hit the scene. But that music is more impressive than virtually anything that’s happening in music right now. And the obvious next step in the evolution is this album, which absolutely kicks ass. The hits from this album are obviously great, but I’ll take Neighborhood Threat 11 times out of 10. Give me the whole album. Loved it from tip to tail.
5.0
Has aged like fine wine.
just a really fun romp. of course a couple of classics on here but I think the album cuts are just as good. bowie and iggy in berlin, two creative dudes making a really fun album. great stuff!
I don't know what I was expecting for this one, for some reason I didn't think I was going to like it... but this album slaps from start to finish! Had a lot of fun, only complaint is that it wasn't long enough.
Sounds like David Bowie and the doors had a baby so it’s pretty good
Etonnamment excellent. Content d'avoir découvert "Tonight", "Neighborhood Threat" ou "Fall in love with me", très entêtante. Oo)
Best Iggy album ever. Punk pop rock It gets no better than this
loved it top to bottom
Incredible album. Wish I would've listened to it sooner.
only heard passenger and lust for life which are two great songs but the overall album is very solid. every song really good. Glad this was on my list!
Listen to this to get your Lust for Life back! Whilst listening to “Success” I got confirmation that a property that we’re selling is going to completion. Quite apt!
It's impossible to talk about Pop's first two solo albums without mentioning David Bowie. Both 'The Idiot' and 'Lust for Life' were recorded with Bowie during the frantic year of 1977 when they were both living in Berlin, recording and touring relentlessly. 'The Idiot' was the perfect companion piece to Bowie's album 'Low'. Bowie had rescued Pop from drug addiction and the loss of his band, The Stooges, but he also took over the project. In response, 'Lust of Life' was Pop's desperate attempt to make the music his own before his mentor could exert too much influence. Despite most songs being written by Bowie, the album definitely sounds closer to a Stooges album than its predecessor. In turn, the change in direction would also later influence Bowie's next experimental album, 'Heroes'.
Yessss
Really great, but quickly turn out repetitive
Obviously heard passenger (one of my fav tunes) and the trainspotting adopted theme Lust for life. Stand out track though has to be Neighbourhood Threat. WOW. This album covers borderline pedophilia (if she says she’s 16 to get into a gig she’s gonna be 14) & fall in love with me! Blaxploitation (Turn Blue) and his and hers drug addiction (weird sin / tonight). No way in hell would this album get out today. Love it!
Original punk rockstar. Great album best song “the passenger”. Iggy rocks the vocals
Aww, now there's the lovely smile of a charming young man whose parents supported and believed in him! Warms my heart. I frigging love Iggy, he is a precious gem and one of the all-time great rock icons. He is absolutely worth a million in prizes! This album is perfection, and every track is a killer. There's the big bad rock persona/attitude packaged in peppy poppy instrumentation and composition; it's just such a deliciously sweet 'n' sour combination that tickles and fizzes in the most delightful way as I guzzle it down with greed. Tight run time, excellent production, branding so on point it's effortless, I just love everything about it. This is what happens when you put such a winning combo (Iggy and Bowie) on the job. Well done, lads! Well done, indeed!
Surprisingly diverse (it's all rock music, but it certainly doesn't all sound the same) and thoroughly effective. If you've ever wondered what the big deal about Iggy Pop is, listen to Raw Power by the Stooges, then go immediately here. You can hear some punk and some swinging drums (Lust For Life, right off the hop), whatever reflective bop The Passenger is (bonus Bowie backup vocals) and then there's a sort of choral opening to Tonight. The album sounds carefully-crafted (Pop wanted to differentiate himself from his friend and producer Bowie), yet spontaneous and authentic (the lyrics of Success are largely improvised and it works). Bear in mind also that the year this came out, 1977, is widely considered the watershed year for punk, a movement with which this album should absolutely be considered. Pop's writing, composition, arrangement and, especially, vocal performance are diverse, committed and effective. He's a dedicated, professional musician, provocateur and weirdo, with the order of precedence varying as needed. This album is both influential and excellent. It's a stone cold classic as vital was it was the day it was released.
Amazing stuff
New the hits well but never gave this one a full listen. Goddamn do I love this record. Iggy + Bowie = Magic.
fun album. Can come back to this
Lust for Life, The Passenger, iconic songs, as you go through the entire LP, its Perfect Iggy Pop. It's rhythmic, hypnotic and fun. This is one of those LPS that stands the test of time, its still pretty great today and outshines A LOT of BS music being made today.
Total banger. What an awesome rock and roll album. So smooth and well structured.
Iggy is king
Long live Iggy Pop.
Love love
Great range and tone. Guitars sounded great and the drums were good in the mix. I loved the lyrics and the lead singers voice. The short songs make this an addictive listen.
Pure fun and feral. The passenger is my favorite
For whatever reason, Iggy Pop was a glaring gap in my musical knowledge. Which is incredibly disappointing because this is an incredible album. Just a ton of fun, an all-around terrific listen. I could listen to this anytime, anywhere.
Look at that smile! Would you want to take that man home to your parents? He seems to have a bit of a lust for life. But in all seriousness, whilst getting out of Bowie's thumb, Iggy Pop was finally finding a way towards getting his groove back and this album was the perfect backdrop for this process. In the year of punk's ascendancy, Lust for Life provided the required addictive energy that made Iggy who he is and it is a shot in the arm for the listener (such as myself). So, if things get too straight and you can't bear it while feeling stuck on a pin, give this a spin.
Great album
Bowie and Iggy in Berlin
There's a lot to like about iggy pop on this album.
This is one of the 20 best albums of the 70's. I do think it could be sequenced better.
Part of the soundtrack to my teenage years. Outstanding album form The Godfather.
First time hearing the album in its entirety. Really enjoyed the high energy all the way through. Appreciate the Bowie influence. To me, this hits as classic hard rock at some of its best. Fav. song: the passenger
Que mal ha envejecido sixteen
Fun!
Loved it from front to back. Not a single miss. Rating: 4.8
This was a really enjoyable album. I only really knew of Lust For Life and The Passenger, but this was a fun and energetic punk rush through and through. Not particularly surprised to find out that Bowie worked on this! Favourite: Lust For Life
One of the best, if not the best, Iggy's skills. Great band, the Sales brothers later on Tin Machine, and Ricky Gardiner (RIP) playing fine, clear and catchy guitars. And it includes "Tonight" the true and moving junkies love song.
Wow! I can’t believe I’ve never listened to much of Iggy Pop. Solid from top to bottom with some standouts.
Superrrrrr
4.5 Blew me away. Way better than expected. Almost every song a banger. No surprise Bowie produced it
This is the most well-known album by Iggy Pop as a solo artist. For a good reason! It has drive, power but it is all about dark stuff like heroin abuse. Trainspotting used the title track for a good reason.
Wonderful album, loved all the songs.
Wow, great album! I really love Tonight - that sludgy, drippy discoesque croon. Overall I like the easy way the songs play out and feel easy, fun and just enough irreverence to feel like "who cares". Good listening for a summer day.
So much energy
I got to see Iggy live in 2011 and had the biggest adrenaline rush of my life after some huge biker guy said "you're going up there", lifted me up off my feet and yeeted me into the crowd. First and only crowd surfing moment, one of my greatest ever memories. I will simply never forget standing at the side of the crowd afterwards with a blobby cup of cider watching Iggy strut his stuff. Legend.
That photo cracks me up. Great album for cruising on a sunny day.
I'd been listening to this album quite a bit in the last few months in preparation of seeing Iggy at Cruel World, and it gets better as I continue to listen. Lust for Life is one of my funeral songs & Success is something I play for myself to get pumped for my work. The rest of the album is fantastic & I love Bowie as a background vocalists. Excellent album. 5 stars.
I really liked this! I’ve enjoyed the Stooges and Iggy Pop stuff I’ve gotten thus far, so I was looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint.
It's so good. It's everything you want from 70s Iggy. It grooves, it grinds, it's raw, it's layered. You can feel the Bowie influence but it never overshadows Iggy himself. It was a high 4-star rating for me but "The Passenger" pushed it over the top. That song is just SO Iggy and I love it dearly. Everything from there on was a delightful coast to the end.
Still full of energy almost 50 years on. What a man
So good. I wish we could rate using half stars because this is a 4.5. It’s definitely better than a 4 so I gotta give it a 5.
Great album.
One of the easiest 5 star ratings so far. I'm more than familiar with this album, and it firmly ranks among my favorite albums ever. As much as I love his work with the Stooges and The Idiot, Lust For Life is the culmination of everything Iggy had done up to that point and executed perfectly. It wasn't scattershot like Raw Power, nor heavy railroaded by Bowie like The Idiot, it struck a perfect balance between the two, with his personality shining and Bowie's contributions merely complementing what Iggy already has, not replacing it with something else. The title track is an all-time classic, endlessly catchy and captivating lyrically and musically, it really flies by. Sixteen and Some Weird Sin continue the trend of being insanely catchy Punk/New-Wave/Rock, and then comes The Passenger, which has a claim for being one of the best songs ever, let alone on this album. Absolutely brilliant songwriting. Then comes Tonight, a cinematic bridge track, and Success, which does what it sets out to do perfectly—function as a jam-session like earworm. All of the great tracks before lead up to what I consider the centerpiece of the album: Turn Blue. Despite its train-of-thought, almost improvisational like quality that reminisces of his earlier work, its truly a masterpiece which brings you straight into the world of addiction that Iggy sets out to paint. It's heart wrenching, eye-popping, and just an amazing track all around which makes the album worth it, if it wasn't already. The album wraps up with Neighborhood Threat and Fall in Love With Me, which are nice, catchy tunes to come down from Turn Blue with. The musical soundscape is deeply consistent throughout the whole runtime, yet each song has its own identity and is not at all mistakable for each other, which is a tough feat. I could go on all day about how much I love this album, but it easily stands among Bowie's Berlin trilogy which this album spawned out of, and I would even argue that it's debatably greater than any of those albums. It's that good, and a bona fide classic.
9/10 super fun! I really love this!
Classic, and can really still hear bowies backing vocals
This was so good
Fuckin’ YES. Sing it, Iggy. Great album that is Berlin through and through 🤍
Classic
Goes very David Bowie at times and tracks 2&3 sag a little. But overall a fantastic energetic album with all time great tunes. Singles stand out but strong album all the way through just seems like the type of album which couldn't be made any more due to raw originality. 5
This is just amazing, never herd it before but it’s brilliant 5/5.
Iggy Pop's second solo album (also produced by David Bowie), takes a more pop focused turn. This has the effect of of infusing Iggy Pop's proto-punk with a more commercial element leading to more of a New Wave feel. The guitars sound more jangly and with Iggy Pop's dominating vocal performance, this album predicts British alternative (Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand etc.) at least 30 years earlier. It uncanny how modern this album sounds. For me, the Berlin albums are better than his work with the Stooges.
Excellent album, the Bowie influence is super clear (not less than when you can actually hear him) but Iggys singing is also fantastic. And The Passenger is just an all time great song.
Wow, this album came up only a few weeks after The Idiot. I love both of these albums, I was really obsessed with this period in Iggy Pop and David Bowie's careers. I go back and forth between which album I love more, this one is definitely more "Rock" oriented. Lust for Life, Passenger, and Tonight are my top tracks.
An amazing Friday album after a week of hit after hit. Absolutely adore this one.
I’ve sat on this and I just don’t think I can give an album that has The Passenger anything less than a 5. Not that the rest is bad, in fact it’s quite good. But man oh man is that a good song. So this gets the elusive light 5.
Wow, an almost faultless album
I'm a fan of Stooges. I recpect Iggy Pop and somehow always wrote this album off. First time actually spending time with it, and I find it nothing less than great!
My favourite Iggy album as it sounds more Iggy pop compared to the idiot which I feel is more a Bowie album, and probably due to the link to train spotting. Plus the passenger is one of my favourite songs. Probably personal choice more than a true masterpiece but this gets the full 5 stars.
Love it as always
Really good :)
I can definitely hear how many of the modern bands I love today have been influenced by Iggy Pop.
Noisy. Angsty. Iconic. Awesome.
Bowie produced it, but this one goes to Hunt and Tony Sales for providing Iggy with an unbelievable rhythm section. Lust for Life is a classic, but The Passenger has proved to be enduring as well. The best Iggy solo album.
Great album
I'm a big iggy pop fan. I absolutely love this album!
A shout of joy all the way through. Iggy Pop retains his punk edge but channels it through more varied songwriting and production (largely courtesy of David Bowie), to phenomenal results.
I love the stooges, and I love The Idiot. But this was my intro to Iggy. I just adore this album.
Such energy in music and singing, have to love life after listening this! The Passenger one of best songs ever recorded. I wanna be his dog.
very cool
Could give this a 5 for Some Weird Sin and Success alone. Plus all the bonus Bowie content. A classic.
What I would do to be a fly on the wall in that Berlin studio
Discazo
Great energy great songs.
Awesome!Loved hearing Bowie in there too
Stonking album. A couple of all-time top tracks and everything else is great too.
That was quite enjoyable! It appears I need more Iggy Pop in my life!
I knew this album was going to be good but I did NOT know that Bowie was going to be singing backup vocals. It’s a damned shame that Iggy released this album the same week that Elvis died - this would’ve been so much more financially impactful for the Godfather of Stage Dives. I guess it’s better for the soul to be renowned for your impact on others’ music careers. I wonder what Iggy would say.
Great stuff. Slicker production than on Raw Power, but none the worse for that. Can hear Bowie in the backing vocals.
What a legend.
Discazo!!
Fantastic. I'm really surprised. I think I've liked every song, and some songs a lot. Like, a lot-a lot. The passenger, I think uhhh Neighborhood threat. "To make it in this world, you gotta make somebody cum". Clap clap Iggy. 4-4.5 stars, no question. I'm officially a fan.
Just absolutely grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go.
Fabulous!!
Love it
This might be the most "ahead of its time" album on this list. During at least half the albums, I couldn't help but think there were Strokes and White Stripes songs that sound JUST like these. Is 2000s alt rock just a ripoff of 70s post punk? I was very pleasantly surprised with this album. Catchy and cool throughout.
Just a great album. I love Iggy with or without The Stooges. It's not perfect, probably a 4.5 but considering that I gave The Idiot a 4, which is also a 4.5 album this is getting the 5. I don't know why I felt the need to explain that but here we are
Surprisingly great. Weird how my first exposure to lust for life was from a fucking cruise ship commercial 5
Rock al estilo de Bowie. Dos megahits. Vinilo.
came 4 times
David Bowie vibe is evident on this… so it suddenly made sense reading that he was heavily involved on the Wikipedia page. Besides “Lust for Life” (oh - yes I guess it does sound very Bowie!) and “The Passenger” I knew very little Iggy Pop. This was fun and I enjoyed it! Favorite songs: Lust for Life, The Passenger, Success, Neighborhood Threat
There's "Lust For Life" and "The Passenger", those two tracks only making it worthwhile to buy your ticket for this ride. But there's also lewd "Sixteen", loud "Some Weird Sin" or lanky "Neighborhood Threat" (what a great 'proto-post punk' guitar arpeggio, slithering in the background from start to end...). There's "Success" and "Tonight". There's David Bowie and Ricky Gardiner in top form behind the scenes. And of course, there's Iggy, his voice, his presence. Still wild, roaring and intense a few years after the Stooges' demise. He snarls, he hoots, he hollers. If he's the "modern man", as he says he is in "Lust For Life", I'm all up for giving up drugs too, getting my shit together, and join him in Berlin to celebrate the ironies of consumer society. Danny Boyle had one of the greatest ideas of his life to use this track for Trainspotting (or was it the book's author, Irvine Welsh?). But the album is worth it, too, folks. So dive in. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: more than 900, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: approximately a half so far (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter
its great
really good album with some legendary songs
“Here Comes My Face” “Ohhhhh shittttt” This album makes me wanna do Heroin and be Scottish 6/5, spent $50 on an OG US press of this last summer and it’s been a household favorite ever since. Absolutely phenomenal album, fav track is “Tonight”
This sounds like good contemporary indie pop. Far out.
KLASSE
Really nice album. 41 min. Just flew by.
classic
great album. Can really hear the bowie influences but still stands up.
A Bateria e a guitarra sao surreais!
Album me kupio od prve pisme! Sigurno ću opet slušat, a bome i istražit druge albume
Saved Prior: Lust For Life Not Saved: 9. Turn Blue (works in the context of the album but won't be listening to it as a standalone track) Off Rip: 8. Tonight 7. Fall In Love With Me 6. Success (LOVE the call and response part) 5. Neighborhood Threat 4. The Passenger 3. Sixteen 2. Some Weird Sin 1. Lust For Life Overall Notes: Balances Bowie's art-rock inclinations with Iggy's rougher edges to awesome effect. Feels raw yet somehow smooth and, well, Pop-py. Hell yeah.
Zabavnoo! Piše “Most of the music (chords, melodies, arrangements) was composed by David Bowie” šta mi se sviđa 4.5/5
Hari Om Iggy Pop
This is pretty exquisite, varied and confident
Fantastic
Perfect album
extra props for locked grooves
what you gonna have as your album cover iggy? just a photo of me grinning like he cheshire cat.
Having a lust for life is far more socially acceptable than having a lost for your own sister, like I do.
My first 5 star. Classic and the first one since doing this that I put on again right after it was finished. Music by Bowie, lyrics by Iggy, what's not to like?
Was surprisingly disappointed in a lot of the punk records on this list. This record has changed that. This is how its done.
I loved this album. Had no idea Iggy pop sounded like this
Rock al estilo de Bowie. Dos megahits.
Classic
oooh yah
Fantastic
It’s fucking Iggy Pop
excellent album from Berlin trilogy, love it and would listen regularly.
Trainspotting one live :3 Choose life q
I just really want to listen to it again and again.
Loved it, great sound, nice tunes
Rock 70s. Muy animado. Canciones miticas. Muy bueno.
Awesome
Success" / "The Passenger" Released: 30 September 1977 "Lust for Life" / "Success" Released: November 1977 "Some Weird Sin" / "Tonight"
Excelente som!!
Saved it and loved it!
Who doesn’t love this album...
Loved it
pure energy
Lekker stevig, beetje rauw en tegelijkertijd poppy en toegankelijk genoeg.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would knowing nothing about Iggy Pop music going into it. Love the Bowie influence on it and feels gritty in places. Not all songs are ones I would listen to, but overall a good album
- Might need to relisten bc I was tired as hell - I think I liked it from what I remember though
I happen to like an Iggy/Bowie collaboration, and I really rate both this album and The Idiot. I did take a star off for a couple of dodgy-sounding lyrics; Iggy's freestyling doesn't always end up in a great place. But I love Bowie's songwriting. No study of 70s Bowie is complete without an exploration of his contributions to Iggy's albums. And Iggy brings a punk energy to the delivery and, yes, to the lyrics, that's so cool. Cool, is what this is.
Kæmpe bangere her.
Great songs. Dangerously close to a 5.
Really fun. The passenger is an eternal bop.
Has the passenger and lust for life Iggy poppppppppp Less punk more rock Fun but i prefer the stooges
Was familiar with a few tracks. The rest were also good. I liked it.
Full of energy and angles. It’s more punk than any punk I’ve heard yet there’s an intelligence and cleverness that comes through naturally. It doesn’t seem contrived to deliver a message, it just does.
This worked far better for me on this occasion than on past attempts. The vocals, although still not my absolute favourite, didn't grate anywhere near as much this time round, and musically this is excellent – a stark contrast from the cold, mechanised dread of The Idiot, instead delivering some supercharged rock and roll for the most part. Whilst David Bowie's watermark is palpable here, the swagger of Lust for Life is largely attributable to Iggy's energetic presence, a kinetic rhythm section that borders on Motown-esque at points, and some loose, jagged guitar playing which works fantastically well. The only minor blot for me on this listen was "Turn Blue", which did err slightly on the self indulgent side.
Iggy Pop is not dead. He toured last year. Tommy went to see him.
Liked this a lot. Have been seeing pictures of this hairless cat like man for years but didn’t know his music. I loved it. Still think he looks way to beef jerky like though.
Nar
Great album that I had heard before. I'd put it 4/5. Passenger is my favorite track followed by success or lust for life.
Iconic
There's something kind of irresistible about this album that makes it very easy to keep listening to it on repeat. Accessible punk music is ok with me.
Rlly fire had some remarkable bangers, right up my alley very much lou reed coded
Iggy rules
Solid album Standout songs: Some weird sin Tonight
it was pretty good but i didn't really like the lyrics. the way he sang was good and the other instraments were pretty good but just not the words.
I for one think all music should aspire to that period where David Bowie was using Iggy Pop and Lou Reed like sock puppets.
Pretty much anything David Bowie touches is gunna be good, this is no exception.
7/10
Surprised by how much I liked it
I'd never listened to Iggy Pop. This album was pretty peaceful.
I don’t think sixteen is about that Rachel but I could be wrong
Good album.
Fantastic. The great lost Bowie album. So much good stuff on here it’s difficult to know where to start. Strangely intimate and … vulnerable? It’s cool, you should check it out.
Bowie and Iggy is a superb combo.
Two albums released in 1977 …glad to have listened and added to my ear files
Pretty solid and fun!
Tonight Lust for Life! 😉
This album is like leaving home to do you big OE in London. You're full of hope and vigor, and you are ready to get fully engrossed in the exciting yet grimy culture that London has to offer. You've come over with a bit of money saved up. Instead of doing the wise thing, and booking trips around Europe, you decide to spend your savings on tall boy cans of Stella Artois and Kronenbourg 1664.
Was ok. Not as punk as i was hoping. Some good opening tracks and you feel the influence.
Never listened to a full Iggy Pop album so this will be fun. Feel like he and The Stooges are influential to a lot of music I like, and certainly came across his music, just not a full album front to back. On the first half, recognized Lust For Life and The Passenger, and those two are great. Overall a fun listen. That post punk rock with some 70s Bowie influences. Good stuff. You really hear that Bowie influence on some of the back half. Notable on Success, the second half opener. A lot of the second half feels a bit more like that. But overall it’s its own thing. A good post punk rocker that’s an easy listen. I really liked this a lot. Feels like a 4 right off the bat. And something that could grow.
Anyway, "Lust For Life" je hud komad & odličen za udaren začetek tega albuma & začetek škotskega filma o heroinu. He's just a guy. Dejansko se sliš, če poznaš Bowieja, kere komade je on napisal (k pr Beatlih, k sm bla enkrat bolj pozorna, ti je koj jasn kaj je Lennon in kaj McCartney). "The Passenger" mi je bil zmer všeč. Mogoč clo bolj k naslovni komad.
Much better than the other one. Iggy is better with a backing band than he is just being weird for weird sake
There's indeed luat in them eyes iggy
My first real encounter with Iggy Pop was on the Kesha song Dirty Love. That song is just a lot of silly fun. Lust For Life is pure fun distilled into an album. You can‘t not hear this album and immediately start dancing and enjoying the moment. I also really enjoy Iggy‘s voice, it‘s perfect for rock n‘ roll.
My previous album was Black Sabbath - two bangers in a row! Lust For Life and The Passenger are iconic, Some Weird Sin and Neighborhood Threat are great, other songs are good EXCEPT Turn Blue - Iggy has some unfortunate takes on Black people and the song itself is not good.
Energetic and fun whilst still having some grime. A really good mix of subversive punk elements while still keeping catchy song writing
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/iggy-pop/lust-for-life/ Yea fun stuff. Of course this album is mainly Lust for Life and The Passenger, but each of the other seven songs are also just pure fun.
I enjoyed this! I'm surprised by the amount of songs I recognized.
3,6/5
This is my first listen all the way through if you can believe it! Iggy Pop was surprisingly not all that formative for me other than a few Stooges songs that my /mu/-prowling friend from HS put me onto. The Passenger is obviously fantastic, so is the YouCan'tHurryLustForLife beat of course. It's funny how Mister Funny Costume Reinvention Homo Theeee Producer on this album was doing ambient shit with Brian Eno but he returned to produce in his glam style in 1977. Nah. That's pretty reductive, actually. This is totally its own thing. They’re calling it the best mixed tambourine ever. The mixing of the tambourine is kind of the perfect metaphor for These Two’s fruitiness. I’m just saying shit. In the foreground is the fire guitar playing. Iggy Pop is a monster.
somehow i had only heard the title track from this (yes because of Trainspotting). great stuff. i like the lou reed impression
barrett moment incoming. i will never understand how you crackers fell for the strokes. unlike y'all we respect our oldie acts. unless they're #suckaMCs. 4.4-4.7. brilliant a side. skosh weaker b side. you can really tell david bowie was in the studio for this one. there's (at least three) tracks that you can really tell iggy pop penned the lyrics. #noncery.
This album kind of blew me away. Really good from start to finish. How have I never listened to this before?
The algorithm really wants me to like Lust for Life but I just don’t. However, I do like a lot of the other things on this record. Some Weird Sin and The Passenger are both really good. The album feels a little better than the sum of its parts.
This album comes billed as a collaboration with David Bowie, and it sounds like it fits in with the albums Bowie made in the period following Young Americans, up to Tonight. I know Bowie much better than Iggy, so it's interesting to hear songs that I know from Bowie albums in their original recordings. Overall, it's ... good, I guess. Not that interested, but it's solid. Glad I finally listened to this famous album, but I don't expect to come back to it.
Bangers throughout.
much better than Raw Power
Great.
Iggy has so much swagger.
I don't know, I only know iggy pop from being a weird guy. Turns out he's made some decent music too 😂. Good for you iggy
Great early pubk
The Passenger thrones a bit above the rest, but a great album.
Lust for Life The Passenger
Top notch. The Bowie influence, the post-punk vibe, and some all time classic singles.
Iggy, you naughty, naughty boy. You've been getting up to no good with that reprobate, Bowie, haven't you?? I find it hard to believe that just a few years earlier to this, Iggy was doing the stuff with the Stooges, that was shambolic, rude and loud, and then come the late 70s, he's teamed up with Bowie for this which is a lot cleaner, but still has an edge to it. Lust For Life has to be close to my top 'album opener' of all time - the way the drums come in, then the bass, finally the guitar and cymbals, before Iggy finally steps up to the microphone - it's a work of art! The Passenger is great too, and the other songs hold together fairly well, although obviously less well known but still great.
wasn’t expecting to like this one but i enjoyed most of it. id give it 3.5 stars but since its whole stars ill give it 4!!
A really good album.
Great album. But the cover? It’s just so weird?! Like a company I’d photo?
Album #150 Iggy Pop: Lust For Life 1977 was a great year for Iggy Pop, releasing what has since aged to be his only really notable album outside the Stooges. Though I personally prefer his darker album from the same year, The Idiot, Lust For Life certainly was his far bigger hit. Both albums were created in no small part by one David Bowie, who really was able to get the best out of Iggy, almost to the point where, without Bowie or his collaborators in the Stooges, Iggy was not able to create anything that would stand the test of time. But thankfully, he went to Berlin with Bowie and created some of the finest albums of the 70s. Lust For Life is sometimes reduced to a sellout album, where Iggy finally put the pop in Pop; however, just because it isn’t as obviously dark as The Idiot, or as grimy as Funhouse, doesn’t mean that this thing lacks any edge. Obviously, it contains Iggy’s biggest hits, the title track and The Passenger, but the album cuts on this thing are practically on their level, and some of them are particularly dark. On Turn Blue, Iggy channels his inner Lou Reed, and on songs like Some Weird Sin and Neighbourhood Threat, Iggy explores some pretty dark topics for a supposed pop album. Honestly, Bowie just had the Midas touch in the 70s; he knew exactly who to work with and how to adapt his sound, and he was very generous in using his talents to help out his friends. Though Iggy does obviously deserve credit here as well. Best Tracks: The Passenger, Neighbourhood Threat, Lust For Life Worst Track: Success Score out of 10: 8.5
Lust for life! What can I say about this track. It perfectly demonstrates its title. It just sounds like someone who is enjoying living. Sixteen was slightly less fun than the first track, but I didn’t think it was bad. I actually really liked Some Weird Sin. The Passenger was for lack of a better term, really cute. The guitar in the background going steady throughout, the consistent drumbeat. Tonight was a great switch-up of vibes. Success had a good vibe going for it as well. Turn Blue was a really tough track for me to get through. To be honest, I just didn’t like it. I thought it was such a departure from rest of the album. Neighbourhood threat was back to what I was enjoying! Fall in love with me was a perfect closer! I was a bit hesitant when I saw it was another 6 minute track but it was so much better than True Blue! 3.5/5 ⭐️ 128/1089
8/10: energetic, swaggering and gritty. This album has all the punk rock sleaze you’d want from Iggy Pop while also being underpinned by the always excellent songwriting of David Bowie. Super consistent and engaging, some of the lyrics haven’t aged the best but overall a really excellent listen. Best song: Passenger
"Lust for Life" showing up in "Trainspotting" is one of my favorite uses of a song in all of movies. Also - it's just an incredible song, one of the best album openers ever. I just love it - the driving beat, the fact that it feels so heavy without any wildly distorted guitars behind it. Just a massssive sound. The rest of the album is good, though I'd have to say that "Turn Blue" is pretty awful, and also, the longest song here. Iggy just isn't a strong vocalist, and "Turn Blue" is begging for someone with pipes, pipes that Iggy just does not possess. I'd give this a solid 3, but "Lust for Life" tacks on another, so it's gotta be - FOUR STARS
It's a lot of fun. There are many super catchy songs, but they also have that Iggy Pop edge. His vocals and energy really carry this album to the next level. His face on the cover is my reaction to this record.
This is a familiar record for me. It has a couple of Iggy's best known songs, Lust For Life and The Passenger, and its probably the most respected and well known of his solo records. The first side of the lp is uniformly excellent and is a good as anything that Iggy Pop has recorded. A lot of the music was composed by Bowie, but the last track, Tonight, really sounds like a Bowie track. The second side of the record is a lot weaker. Success isn't a bad track, but it feels pretty insubstantial and Turn Blue really drags. The last two tracks are solid though.
I really enjoyed this. Great energy
It is not my tipe of music
Title track is inexorably linked with the opening scene of Trainspotting for me, and the passenger I’ve heard more times than i can count too, so good, as it turns out is the rest of this album Tonight might be the most obviously Bowie song ever, and you can feel his influence all over the album to the point where it may as well be a joint collaboration
Iggy pop is an interesting dude Love the Bowie covers Originals are fantastic too 4/5 Favorites: some weird sin, passenger,
Fantastic album and belongs on this list, IMO.
another classic album. bought when it first came out due to the Bowie connection but instantly loved it
Me sorprendió la voz
Passenger 10/10 no notes
Scuzzy and gritty and occasionally really creepy about underage women. Iggy's got a terrifying mug on the cover too which makes the vibe of the whole thing even more off-putting. Pretty cool though!
Loved it.
The first half was a bit stronger than the second, but it was all very listenable rather. At least 4 songs that I think could make it onto my list. No Black Widow Baby tho, must be on a different album
Good album even with the very problematic songs, several stand outs, and favorites of him. It's well put together and the parts work well together. Even though it sounds and feels "old" I feel this albums sound was brought back out during the 00's and the garage sounding bands. Well worth a listen even with the cringe/gross Sixteen.
Fun rock and roll
Lust for Life has a highly distinct and effortlessly cool sound. Iggy Pop has channeled his carefree punk spirit into a smarter and more sophisticated approach. It is interesting hearing him contain his bundles of energy. My favourite post-punk bands from the decade that followed were definitely taking notes on his vocal performance. When you get to the halfway point some of it owes a little too much debt to David Bowie, who by no coincidence is on production duties. In this mode Iggy sounds less innovative and less like he is playing to his personal strengths.
Lust for Life is a great record! It’s getting a high 4 from me. Bowie’s production really does it for me here and the tunes are great, it doesn’t quite blow me away but not far off
This was way different than expected! The punk influence is still there but there's a ton more going on, on this album. I feel like the bass and drums compliment this in a huge way, this whole album had a rhythmic drive to it.
Half a Bowie Album, written in their wild years in Berlin. It’s like the unwashed brother of Ziggy Stardust, and it has Hits! Fav: The Passenger
1. Guitar riff is what is used for "Are you gonna be my girl", I finally get where this comes from! Great bop overall 2. Feels very proto punk indeed, can see influence on artists such as The Strokes 3. Pulsating, very catchy 4. Classic, definitely more pop sensibility, I can see why this was the big single/hit 5. Very epic/orchestral feeling with a real raw proto punk vibe, hell yeah! Similar/inspiration for Radio Gaga? 6. Again catchy, similar to other tracks on the album but still a good listen 7. Funky, a bit more muted than other tracks, more bluesy (I guess this should have been obvious by the title being Turn Blue!) 8. Not too remarkable but fits the tone and style of the rest of the album 9. More of a bop, good closer for the album.
My first exposure to Iggy Pop would be from the Gap commercial with Lust for Life him dancing around shirtless. Then, of course, from The Adventures of Pete & Pete as the younger Pete's friend's father or perhaps under gops of make up in Deep Space Nine. After Trainspotting dropped, everyone knew who he was if you didn't before. This album is great but you can hear Bowie's sticky fingers all of it, not like there's anything wrong with that. There's also times where I can hear some Jaggar in Pop's voice. I am a bit disappointed that it's not as punk as I thought it would be but I guess that's what the Stooges are for. Ya Blowhole! 4
Iggy levererar!
Excited to hear his first collab with Bowie and then Bowie’s entire discography which I assume is on the list. TBH I did really enjoy this. Iggy Pop sounds like he’s legit having a good time recording this album. Great production, and once again shocked that this came out in 77
Ich mag das Album
8/10 Highlight: Some Weird Sin Lowlight: Neighbourhood Threat
Amazing and in your face!
Iggy and Bowie, love it
Timeless rock n roll, incredible voice
Some amazing songs on this album with an iconic cover
Overall Rating - 3.50/5 (7.00/10). Good album. I can tell he was working with David Bowie during this timeframe.
Everyone will correctly hear Bowie's fingerprints all over these tunes - witness Ricky Gardiner's Ronsonesque lead on "Success," for example - but the real reference point here is the Velvets, and not just because of the subject matter. Iggy (and Bowie) refine Lou Reed's trick of co-opting the structures and melodies of the Sixties - doo-wop, Motown, psychedelia - into funhouse-mirror versions of themselves. "Tonight" turns the intro of Cream's "White Room" into a twisted tale of overdose. "Turn Blue" becomes a demented girl-group ballad that desperately refuses to end (with Bowie playing the role of the girls harmonizing). This is the real successor to Bowie's *Young Americans* in a way that illuminates and goes beyond that album's reach. Pop (the genre), the opiate of the masses. The affectations of one kind or another continue before Iggy finally lets loose on the forward-thinking eleven o'clock number, "Neighborhood Threat" - proving that, underneath it all, he's just a normal fucked-up guy from a normal fucked-up neighborhood, a truth scarier than anything else he describes here. I certainly won't blame you if you don't want him stalking your neighborhood but his very existence I find endlessly fascinating.
Lindos clásicos
Pretty fun and enjoyable to listen to. One of those albums that I plan to revisit soon!
Had only heard the singles, especially Lust for Life off the Trainspotting soundtrack. Great record, oozing with Iggy's trademark salacious sneer, somehow making punk dirty sexy instead of just dirty.
Gøy! Æ hadde ikke trodd at æ e et menneske som like Iggy Pop, men æ tror æ e et menneske som like Iggy Pop?
Pretty solid album, couple of good hits.
Heard Before; 4; Gravitas. Remarkable how so many songs with just one, two, maybe three chords can still fun and interesting. A lot of that has to do with the effects and rhythm throughout, and the songs are just a lot of fun in that many of them chug and gallop along, while the ballad-type songs feel emotional with the vocals. Favorite Song: Some Weird Sin
Pop's second solo album and another collaboration with Bowie while both were absolutely fucked on coke and heroin and arguably at their peaks creatively. It rocks, there are pop hooks and the druggy revelry just adds that little bit of debauched, dark danger to it. Best Tracks: Lust For Life; Some Weird Sin; The Passenger
pretty good! not my usual type of stuff i listen to, but it’s important to respect the roots of my favorite music. Passenger mentioned! listened to this to calm my nerves before a shitty presentation.
« The Passenger » est un must.
If Lou Reed's "Transformer" was Lou Reed with a David Bowie filter than this is the Iggy Pop equivalent. Which works in my favor because I like both Iggy Pop and David Bowie. The title track along with "The Passenger" are classics for a reason and the songs inbetween are great as well, with "Sixteen" being the one exception. All in all I can't complain with this as my Monday pull. 4/5
Quickly following The Idiot, the Pop/Bowie collaboration keeps bearing fruit.
Heard of iggy pop never listened to an album. I like how it opens with the title track, and I like how that track opens with a good musical intro. Sound is a little off, vocals aren’t loud enough. Catchy chorus tho. That was a very fun song. Great guitar on sixteen. Usually have cowbells but I actually think they work really well here. Really cool guitar in some weird sin. This is just another good song. Good lyrics. I think I’ve heard the passenger. Great guitar riff. This song is a banger. Background track on tonight is so good. Musically this album is so impressive/pleasing. Don’t really like success, but I appreciate how it’s different from everything else so far. Turn blue again shows the range. Very impressive. Even when he’s just talking I like his voice. Turn blue is a ballad that doesn’t at all feel like 6 mins. Fall in love with me is another really fun song. Good songwriting, great guitar even tho it’s pretty simple. Can’t believe how much I enjoyed the album. 3.8/5 stars. Would listen again.
High energy Good bass Transition to next songs iffy
Bowie had lots of things going on in 1976-1977. Recording 2 own albums + producing and composing most material on 2 Iggy albums, filming a movie, touring in Europe. From these 2 seventies Bowie/Pop collaborations i liked The Idiot more, but Lust for life is spontaneous rock album which is still the cornerstone of Iggy's live set.
pretty good actually
How much time did Iggy Pop spend in the tanning bed?
I love Bowie. And this is really good. Lust for life, The Passenger, and Tonight are enough to grant this one at least 4 stars. Success is also great. One of the albums I was looking forward to listening to, and it did not disapppoint.
A lot of fun. Same great guitar riffs and catchy tunes and although Iggy’s singing probably isn’t to everyone’s tastes, it definitely fits this excellent punky record.
Iggy's amazing voice. Classic and legendary songs but very surprised with songs I never listened to: Turn Blue (Pink Floyd vibes) & Fall in Love with me.
Genuine; Original; Interesting. What more can we ask for? (It's amazing how few artists give all three.)
