I always love to hear something outside of the 1990-2020/Western realm. Really jazzy and groovy. People keep telling me Baker on drums is insane but I don't really know what that means. I believe them though. Crazy that this is a live album. 4/5 bc I can definitely listen to it in the background and vibe again and again, but I'm not deeply excited about it.
Definitely has some real beautiful moments and maybe I'd rate it differently on a different day. Today, however, the day it was assigned, I'm applying for jobs. This is not good job applying music.
I'm a sucker for harmonica. This almost reminds me of Modest Mouse/Aeroplane in some ways. Maybe that's just the folk influence. I don't know much about folk or Bob Dylan. So interesting doing this project bc most of what I listen to is weird/contemporary, but like, ofc I've heard OF Bob Dylan, just never heard HIM, y'know?
I used to love this album and I understand the impact it had on rap/black america as a whole, but it’s 2024 and I can’t condone anything that glorifies beating women (esp when members genuinely were beating women, tho thanks for apologising Dre, I guess).
It's fine. Again, I recognise what a HUGE impact this album made, but listening to it for the first time in 2024... It's fine.
Maybe now would be a good time to explain my ratings....
1/5 - Actually unlistenable, brings out negative feelings
2/5 - Falls flat, definitely moments I genuinely don't enjoy. Would not listen to again.
3/5 - Would listen to again, but I'm not rummaging around for it. Definitely some nice moments but not getting me amped
4/5 - Genuinely a quality album. Will dig it out for repeat listens for sure.
5/5 - God tier. This rating is reserved for some ELITE shit
I don't think this is a true 4 to me. Looking on my past ratings, you know? Like, this ranks higher than Revolver for me, but lower than Highway 61 Revisited. It's like a 3.5. It's def a bit repetitive and not something I'm going to be pulling to the front of my queue, but I would actively put it on again. Lemme listen again actually and get back to you.
It's getting 3 stars bc I know it's realistically good, I like what I'm hearing. I am also, however, on the second day of a hangover and Spotify will only supply me with the hour and seven minute version of this album. I just want the original, why is Spotify so shit? Deeply, deeply shit.
Anyway, I only listened to the first half. Sorry, Michael, maybe I'll come back and reassess.
Also, the whole pedophilia thing, yk.
Not gay upon first glance but very gay. I want to put this on for my lil gay shawty, but we don't know there's vibes until Waltz Me plays and we jokingly dance, but there's a moment, and then we push away, but the rest of the album plays and we just can't resist.
I can't believe I was gonna give this a 2/5. Really goes to show that the setting in which you listen to something is crazy important. This may be the closest to a 5 we've had so far? Alas, it is absolutely still a 4.
Another 4/5 that could honestly be a 5, but I just... Idk. The 5 is so sacred. The 1 and the 5 barely exist on this chart to me, but the 2-4 leaves so little room. It's a toughie for sure. Amazing guitar, upbeat, smooth. Love the cover art, as well.
Idk there were moments I like but overall but this album just didn't really stand out to me. Again, not realistically a 2 but more of a 2.5. Honestly maybe even a 3.
This album should realistically be a 5/5 based on my music taste. I just don’t like it though, I‘m sorryyyy…
Ok again it's actually so close to a 5. The song about Stevie Wonder is hilarious and I'm actually obsessed with the robot voice box ballad. Very Kraftwerk.
An album that so many people have recommended and yet I just cannot get into it. Black Hole sun obvs a banger though.
It was fine. I didn't hate it but I definitely wasn't deep bopping. Was pretty excited when that jazzy intro hit, but it didn't do much more for me past that.
Guuuuuys, the 5 star system!!! It just doesn't work for me. The album before this was a low 3, but this is a high 3. DEFINITELY not a 4 though, let's not be crazy. Maybe I'll give it another listen and change my mind. I don't like the permanence of these reviews vs. the subjective nature of listening to music. That being said, my ex used to tear into Fleetwood Mac HARD for being trash and I definitely don't agree with that.
There's a few hits for sure. It's probably because it's 2024 and not 1986 anymore, but this is literally the most 80's album I have ever heard in my life, Jesus Christ. It's really not bad and even has a song or two I enjoy. It's really getting a 2 because I'm looking at the things I gave a 3, and it's just not quite on paar with those.
I basically think that this is what Avril Lavigne thinks she sounds like. Actually, I think Avril Lavigne thinks she has a real Riot Grrrl thing going on. I think this is what Avril Lavigne's fans think she sounds like. Anyway, it's a solid 3 from me. A lot of hits on here for someone I had not previously heard of.
I'm not gonna lie, I was hoping it would start with that song that goes, "Sail away, sail away sail away sail away." Y'all know what I'm talking about?
Wow, it's crazy because I was going to give this song a 2 simply because I don't speak French. I thought, as a big fan of experimental music/the use of sound, maybe it could pull up to a 3. Turns out it's just a pedophilic anthem about a man hitting a 14 year old with his car, taking her virginity, and then sending her on a plane that crashes (she dies). Aw, my first one star! 1 Album I Wish I Hadn't Heard Before I Died.
It's not even bad. I'm sorry, 50 Cent, but this is the only album in this project so far I cannot listen to. I don't know why. I think music has a lot to do with life timing and I cannot find the time in my life to listen to it.
Classic indie album, would have been a 5 for me a few years ago tbh. Enjoyable for sure, will listen again, but all indie kind of blends together (though you can say that for most genres, I suppose).
Wowwww, so many hits. I've heard of R.E.M. but I never actually knew what songs to associate with them. All of them, apparently.
I think my issue with this album is that it's rather slow and mellow, but Norah's voice doesn't really do enough to carry the album for me. Not quite ethereal enough to make this style interesting to me personally. All around just found it rather boring. Sorry, Norah. :(
A solid 3. I'm not sure I'd really put this one on repeat, but it did gain at least a few listens. I think it's super interesting that Willie Nelson is in it. For some reason I always just kind of assumed Willie Nelson was just Willie Nelson at all times.
I don't think I'm a huge folk/country artist. Honestly, there's elements I really enjoy. Wonder what it would take to really capture my attention.
I've giving it three stars because I see the vision and I love that it's an all female band. I think I should check out some of their pre-album work, which is reportedly more punk than this. I don't think I'm a huge new-wave fan. It's just a little boring to listen to, in my opinion.
I want to love this one, but I honestly just don't. I'm sorryyyyyyy. I love the cover art and think she has a beautiful voice, but there's just something missing for me. I'm still fairly new to getting into pop, and the things that appeal to me are generally more in the hyper pop or club direction.
It's fine. It's fun enough, but it really just sounds like the same thing over and over again. Also, definitely gives me pop-punk vibes way over punk vibes. I guess that's revolutionary for the time. Honestly, both punk and pop-punk can fall flat for me. I find that both have a tendency of being repetitive. As stated two albums back, I don't like new-wave either. Honestly, I feel I have been too generous with my 3's.
Damn, okay, I don't know what I was expecting from Aerosmith but I actually throuroughly enjoyed this. A lot more country/classic rock influenced than I would have expected for some reason.
Listed on so many music websites as THE #1 album of all time. I hadn't listened to it in awhile and really didn't have any memories on it. Upon relisten, however, I understand why it's earned it's place. Kendrick is King. Punches hard and rides smooth
I know that this playlist is primarily set from a very Western POV. I get it, it's the music that was the most influential to the western world. It just makes me a bit sad because, while this album is fine, why am I listening to reggae from England? Surely there has to be more influential reggae album?
I think I'm getting tougher with my ratings. The 2s have been rolling out. Would I have made this a 4 in the past? Tbh, probably not. It's good, it has a lot more variety than a lot of rock, indie, punk, etc. Don't come at me and pretend like those 3 genres aren't insane overlapped. Anyway, ya, 3, will listen again, but didn't blow my mind.
Mmm, a bit of a slower jazz album. I think it's fine but I've given it a listen maybe 3x now and it just always fades into the background. I'm sorry to all three Paul Evans, but it's mid to me. A solid 2.5.
It's fine. Classic grunge.
It's nice - a lot of synth and other instruments that make this a fun grunge listen. Sounds both modern and exactly, correctly, stamped as 1967
Very soft singer-songwriter. I just found out I lost not one, but two dream jobs. Feels mood appropriate but not something I would see myself revisiting. I don't think anything particularly stands out for me here.
Yeah, pretty good. Some great instrumentals. First album I've heard by Deep Purple. Apparently the original venue they wanted to record this in got burned down like right before the recording. By Frank Zappa. LOL!
It’s Bob Dylan so ofc it’s good (source: the harmonica). It’s just not my fav Bob Dylan.
Mhm angry electronic riot grrrl energy. Not amazing with a morning coffee and a read but generally very nice.
Super chill, really nice background music. Kind of reminds me of Nice Guys Love You a bit. Love the album art, as well.
It’s nice, very swinging. Not sure if I’m actually finding too much country influence? Could be a great album to throw on in the background of a smoking-allowed, red satin, wine bar.
I can't rate it a 5 because it feels to sacred. I think I rated a Santana album 5 stars awhile back and I regret it. It's good, BUT FIVE? A PERFECT FIVE?
Let's calm down.
I’ve tried to listen to this album in the past and the whispery baby voice just did not do it for me, but I have been torn to shit by the gworlies for it time and time again. Let me lock in now, about 2-3 years post my last listen, and report back…
Ok, I’m back. I think listening to it in this context actually makes it soar. I did a lot of headphone listens in the past and this round I did an atmospheric room listen. Way different. I also loved Eusexia (bc I’m normie scum) and that also gave FKA a running start this listen around.
Whoa, I definitely mixed this up with Highway 61 revisited. Actually, in my mind, THIS was the album art for that album. Wtf. The sound isn't even really similar. I guess I'm just mentally unwell, that's fine.
I also already had this album saved. P sure I reviewed it on a long forgotten alt account. It's good tho, there's a reason I saved it. Crazy that it's his only studio album and didn't blow up until like 10 years later. Would have a hard time defining this genre myself, but RYM says singer-songwriter. I guess that makes sense? What defines the sound of singer-songwriter? Also alt. rock.
I had Dancing Queen on my Hitclips (TM) back in like… shieeed, 2003? I thought that 30 second sound bit was the coolest thing ever. I think I also had a 30 second Avril Lavigne clip? Sooo yeah, I guess you could call me kind of a music nerd.
Anyway, it is iconic. I hear a lot of music fanatics hate on this, but I can’t help and wonder if that’s bc it’s very pop and woman lead? I’m just saying… anyway, I like that they switched wives/husbands. I bet it was all so amazing and then all so dramatic to be in ABBA.
Mm, yeah, nice. Some definite hits here. I prefer the darker aura of Little Dark Age. I read somewhere once that all of MGMT's music sounds pretty much the same, but always with a step to the side that keeps it fresh. I would generally agree with that.
Really nice, quite crazy. I’d only heard Thrown of the Chrimson King before this. It can get a bit intense but I’m definitely going to chew on it for awhile.
Wow, I was just talking about Souxie and the Banshees today (album features samples from her).
I’ve also been talking a lot about the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. So much so that it has become the phenomenon.
Ok, let me listen to the album.
Yes, it's a high 3, for sure. Some crazy electronic/guitar riffs. Honestly, this could have been a 4 if it weren't following a long string of 4 predecessors.
Hanky panky know howwww 🗣️🗣️
Also the I Must Not Sniff Cocaine interlude lmao.
Very funny for a p soft singer-songwriter album.
It’s like the definition of mid. Nothing you would turn off in the background but nothing that blows my little mind. Some great riffs throughout.
Mm, Nina Simone's voice is so haunting. Great voice for soul. I love sad women singing about love. It's very relatable.
Oh, also the infamous sample from Jay Z's Story of OJ.
God there is just endless Bob Dylan on this list. 1001 Bob Dylan Albums.
Probably the most harmonica one filled yet. Actually a bit painful at times, even as a harmonica lover.
Wow, an album I've actually listened to before! Somehow still mixed it up with Deerhunter. I think it's funny that even the 5 Star reviews for this album are like, "I'm shocked to find this here!"
I used to be a huge indiehead but I think now it just makes me cringe a bit. That being said, definitely not bad.
God, something about this album just pisses me off. The crashing of drums on the first song along with his voice... It's like soft launching a headache.
Ok, post-listen. It's fine.
Ok no I biked to it and it pissed me off again idk.
Wow obsessed with the album art.
Ah, I see on Spotify I’ve already listened to the extended remastered whatever version and liked a few songs. Let’s see.
--
It's fine. I think Smashing Pumpkins are enough of a household name that I think, "Yeah! Lemme check em out!"
Then I do but ultimately never revisit their work until I once again wonder why I’ve never given them a shot.
I was excited to listen to this because I’ve mentally held Prince in high regard, but it just falls flat somehow. Doesn’t even quite meld well into the background. Hoping the next Prince album to come up does me better bc I want to love him, I doooo.
My boyfriend loves Metallica and was so excited to listen to this, but other than the shredding, it’s not doing it for me. 3 stars bc of Lukas only.
I lived in fear of this album being out there so now I at least get to conquer it.
Yeah ok, I actually get this one. Really nice. Great range. No wonder everyone goons to the Beatles.
MMFFF YEAHHH an indie essential. Just good vibes. Realistically more of a 3 for maybe being a bit too samey, but an album I’ve enjoyed far too much in my real life to rate it as such.
I understand why the top reviews are all one stars, but I also think it’s hypocritical to hate on Morrisey and then exclude all other big artists.
The Beatles? All of them to some extent harmed their wives; Ringo beat Barbara into a bloody pulp to the point he thought she was dead.
Led Zeppelin? Jimmy Page literally had 13 y/o Lori Mattix KIDNAPPED and RAPED and HELD HOSTAGE for YEARS. Like how do we not talk about that??
Morrissey is a boomer bigot spouting nonsense. He should be hated for that, but music fans love to praise WAY more problematic musicians and then turn around and act as if they have this high moral ground for hating Morrisey.
My ex loved Steely Dan but I don’t think we ever listened to a single song I knew.
I guess they were all hiding on this album.
First time listening to Stevie Wonder. It’s about what I expect, and that’s not an insult.
I was just thinking about how my friend used to date this Amish guy. His name was John and they dated until he fell off a roof and the fear of god was back in him. Until she saw him on Facebook a month later dating a big tiddy goth girl.
Anyway, immaculate Amish vibes.
Not as many hits as Green, but def some recognisable stuff on here. Kind of reminds me of Green Day.
Fun enough but not that memorable aside from the hits.
LET’S GOOOOOO
I actually used to not like this album and tell people. I cringe about that sometimes. It’s perfect.
(Win Butler is still a creep tho).
Yassss, Missy.
Every time I hear a 90’s female rapper it just reminds me of how Bo$$ released a single album under Def Jam and it FUCKING SLAPPEDDDD. But then she got sick/took a break for awhile, and upon trying to come back, Def Jef (who she recorded with) approached tons of huge indie labels… who all just asked what she looked like. You are not allowed to be a successful female rapper without also being a sex icon. Actually, one of the big appeals of Bo$$ for me was her gangsta style and “lack" of sexuality. She was tough.
And then she died…
Sorry this has nothing to do with Missy Elliot. She absolutely deserves the fame she has achieved, as well. Her mother and her escaped domestic abuse from her father, and in seeing her mother’s strength in this situation, she recognised her own strength. Very positive music for someone who endured a lot.
I’m giving this album 4 stars, though it's realistically more a 3, purely bc of what it represents. I don’t think it’s Missy’s best, but it is her debut.
I’m sorry, who is this? I feel like I’ve at least heard of 99% of the artists on this list.
The album is super fun and painfully 80s. I could do a dance class in spandex to this.
Omggg, my first time ever listening to James Brown. This feels momentous.
—
Ok, hear me out. It’s not the best introduction. It’s grainy 60s audio and the audience is not tuned out at all and SCREAMING. It still grooves heavy, but I look forward to a studio recording. Maybe a video here would help.
Oh wowww. Funny enough I saved Blue by Joni awhile ago bc I’ve heard it discussed as a classic. I haven’t gotten around to it but this is also quite beautiful.
Started off strong, but 47 minutes made it monotonous.
Wow crazy looking through all these reviews and seeing so many one stars. I enjoyed it, but they have me second guessing myself. I recently told someone I’m not a huge Erykah Badu fan and I tried looking for a single negative review of her online and came up empty handed. Maybe my ears are broken.
—
Ok I gave it a proper headphone visit and also saw it was released in 2010… a little monotonous. Has vibes of The Killers and The Doors having a baby, but worse. But still not bad either!
Oh man I did not know about that penis flop video.
I know the hits from Bruce, but this is a bit softer. Very singer-songwriter and acoustic guitar.
I really enjoyed it upon listen but it did less for me as the day went on. Not much to say about it.
So crazy, I actually saw Napalm Death live. Love that their singer looks like an elementary school math teacher.
Not an everyday listen. Has to catch you in the right mood, but oh, it caught me. Refreshing to get out of all the super popular rock/-adjacent albums on here. Grindcore was not on my bingo card for this project.
I;m thinking about thos beans
—
The ad reads actually really do it for me. It’s like OG meme music. I will say, I hate that Spotify doesn’t offer the original albums a lot of the time and is like, “Here’s the super deluxe ultra extended never released b side c side tracks version!" This album would be losing points and novelty if it was actually 1-2 hours long.
”I mean, it’s fine, it sounds old… I don’t know much about music, what else was released in 1977?"
-A friend reacting to this
Hilarious name. Yeah, you know what? It’s perfectly mediocre. Perfectly.
Oh wow. I remember being taken to a party while tripping balls and then being left alone in a room while the opening track to this played. Scared the shit out of me.
Impeccable until literally that last track B.I.B.L.E song where he condemns women for wanting to legalise abortion and praises the lord. Yikes. Big yikes. They should release an unextended cut where they just take off that last track. Final season of Game of Thrones ahh song.
Purposefully shitty vocals but I get it. It’s like this emoji 🤪
I know literally nothing about the Foo Fighters but for some reason I’m so unexcited to listen to this
I actually didn’t really understand this album until I took acid and saw a planetarium laser show for it. The CGI was clearly made in the 70s and had never been updated; even hallucinating it still looked so bad. Like dancing cash registers and dollar signs to Money. A little on the nose.
The music hit hard though. It blew my mind. I think this was a foundational experience in me broadening my music taste and getting more into music overall. A real cornerstone.
ANOTHA BANGAAAA.
This album sticks with me the most from a time when I went to Oktoberfest. The night before a friend and I went out in his family’s convertible and drove through the woods he’d hung out in as a child. The air was frigid, but the sky was clear. We stargazed at an insanely lit up sky and drove while this album played in the background. Elevated the entire experience. A really lovely evening.
Actually, before ever knowing who they were, I also saw them live. I remember them having an insane mirror-laser set up that created these crazy holograms. It was at a festival and Chance the Rapper was the only other act left, playing at an adjacent stage. Sigor Ros was so quiet and had only gathered maybe 100 people. You could hear the booming energy and light off in the distance and the contrast was quite beautiful. This was actually the same day I got taken to that house party where I was left alone to listen to Liquid Swords lmao.
Wow, so many good albums lately. Hadn’t heard this one before but recently watched a Todd in the Shadows video about Ringo’s band (or album?) being named Wings despite it already being the name of Paul McCartney’s band. LOL!
Anyway, wow. Really good.
There's moments where it's so jazzy and the guitars are shredding and it's everything. Then there's parts where I feel like I'm driving passenger with a friend's conservative and mildly intoxicated dad. Low 4 high 3.
I’m a bit shocked at all the haters in the reviews. I think it’s pretty good. Especially for, uch, shoe gaze.
