First time listener of this album. Not a country fan and don’t really like her voice. It kinda rakes at me, I’m afraid. Lyrically, it is good though and I’m glad I listened to it this once.
Tried. I really tried. Just confirms the truth for me that I simply don’t like anything after about 1995. He wrote a song about a serial killer that killed over 30 boys from 14-21 years old. And it wasn’t even that good. The songs all sound the same. For me, the epitome of musicians after about 2000 that I can’t enjoy. At all. I’m sorry,. It’s not personal. I’m sure it’s me, not you. Just not an enjoyable listen at all to me…. Oh wait! I’m really glad I listened even though I hated it. That’s why I’m doing this list!!
Good listen. I didn’t know I knew the title track, but I totally did. Had no idea the artist or song title, but there it was leading off Green Onions. This genre is not my favorite and this album didn’t do anything to change that, but at ~35 minutes, it was a nice break from the usual.
I like Bruce. I don’t love Bruce. This is my favorite of his albums, so for me, it was worth the listen. Lots of singles on this one, so I was familiar with most of em. I think Thunderroad, Backstreets and Jungleland are my favs.
Album #3 in a string of 4 straight killer albums from the Stones. In my opinion, it was their peak season of creativity and writing (1968-1972). Beggars, Bleed, Sticky and Exile. I assume this stretch coincided with founder Brian Jones getting ousted (then tragically passing away). Jagger/Richards took on the song writing and Jimmy Miller was hired for album production. All my favorite Stone songs come out of this period.
I don’t know if any of the other 3 are on this list (I haven’t come across them yet) but should be. Exile is my favorite Stones album, but Sticky is a real treat and holds up. Beggars and Exile are 5 stars for me. Bleed and Sticky are 4 stars.
Funky. Super. Fly. I’ve seen this album featured on various sites as a top 5 funk album all time. Never listened to it. It’s funk. It’s soul. It’s R&B. Really enjoyed each of the 36 minutes. The blend of instruments is crazy and the concept running thru the album of the attempt to escape the poverty-stricken drug abuse culture is gripping. At times, Mayfield somehow had me tapping my foot and feeling sorrowful at the same time. I was really rooting for the character to break free of the temptations all around. A real treat and a solid 5 ⭐️ for me.
Truly innovative. Imagine being a rock guitarist in 1978 and hearing this album for the first time. I imagine it was a bit confusing how he made the guitar sound the way he did. EVH is a top 5 all time guitarist in my opinion, primarily because he did things with the instrument no one had ever recorded before and influenced the next 15 years of rock guitarists. Outside of Hendrix, very few have been so influential.
While I’m not the biggest fan of the band overall, this debut is their best in my opinion. I’m The One, Atomic Punk and On Fire are the deep track standouts. For me, a solid 4 ⭐️ as an album
Never really followed or listened to post-hardcore punk. Never heard of this album or band. I’m doing this project to get some exposure to different types of music and expand my general knowledge. Considering that objective, I’m glad I listened to this one, but probably won’t listen to it again.
As far as 90’s hard punk goes, I can see why this album is on the list. I generally like aggressive music in the right circumstances and quantities, so this qualifies. It’s a pretty solid effort. They really mixed up the sounds and tempos and kept me engaged for most of the album. Maybe about 20-25 minutes longer than I would have preferred. Most punk albums I’ve listened to run about 30-40 minutes. 10 songs, 3.5 minutes each, hard and fast and in your face. This one kept going to the point I was getting a bit fatigued with it. I believe the version on Spotify was nearly 70 minutes.
This album is on the wrong list. Should be on “1001 Albums That May Kill You if You Hear Them”.
I read on Reddit the list from Dimery was highly UK-centric (biased). This is the first evidence of this for me. Just a terrible album to be in the 1001. It literally shows up on no other compiled lists. The real proof is on the Wiki page as this list is literally the ONLY accolade. The artist surely paid to be here. I had much more fun reading the review comments than listening to this trainwreck. Y’all’s a creative bunch!!
First time listener of Bjork. Heard of her, but never listened. I don’t know if this album is representative of her typical work, but, surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Not a fan of electronic music at all, but the song writing and incredible voice made up for that. She has a beautiful voice and great range. Very emotional tie to the music she is writing. Good album, never got bored.
Fantastic. I’ve heard it all the way through several times. This run through was just as satisfying. Talking Book, Innervisions and this one. What a 4 year run. All 5 stars. This could be his greatest? I believe I read he thinks it is. 2nd half “deep tracks” are just so GOOD. For me, on a very short list of albums I would need on a desert island. Top 10 All-Time? Top 5? One could argue.
Best female vocalist of all time. Very respectful nod to Whitney. This album is definitely in the top 100 all time. Maybe top 50. Aretha at her best. Easy 5 ⭐️
Not what I was listening to in the 80’s so I’d never heard of her. Or this album. Over the last 25 years, I’ve become a sucker for female singer-songwriters. No exception here. I like it. Don’t know how this compares to her other albums, but I may explore some. Nowhere near the level of Joni Mitchell (Blue), Carole King (Tapestry) or Tracy Chapman (Self Titled), but a cool vibe with meaningful content.
I found this album to be quite underwhelming. Aside from “Imagine”, the rest of the tracks were new to me. Guess I was expecting something better. I did like the Paul “dis” track though. I respect his contributions to the Beatles over 7 years, but not a Lennon fan overall - seems like a petulant, narcissistic and hypocritical person. This album didn’t change that.
Last 4 of 6 have been female singer-songwriters. Glad they are well represented. I’m an 80’s kid and this album is a solid banger front to back as Punk meets New Wave. Glad for the re-listen. Felt like I was back in the 8th grade😂😂
My 2nd favorite Beatles album just behind The Beatles Self-Titled “White” Album. Last recorded album (not last released) by the band. Expertly assembled, engineered and produced. Literally every song is killer. The sound stage, engineering and mixing is legendary. Easy 5⭐️. Top 20/25 All-Time in my book.
Not the biggest Steely Dan but I’ve listened to their full 1970’s catalog over the years. In my opinion, this album is not better than Royal Scam, Aja or Cant Buy This Thrill - those are all 4-Stars for me. I do appreciate the Beckett/Fagan contribution to music. They write interesting music combining some cool Jazz, R&B, Funk and Rock elements. Lyrical compositions are very solid. I have to be in the right mood to listen to Steely Dan - they are not a band I can listen to over and over.
I have a lot of respect for the Who, however, any album that is not titled “Who’s Next?” is a 3 star. Who’s Next is by far their best and on my short “desert island” list. I’m giving this one a 4 ⭐️ as it was their debut album and was super progressive for its time. Standouts on this album are the title track, The Kids Are Alright and The Ox. Pete, Keith and John smoked this song. The oldest known recorded track by The Who and one of the top all-time rock instrumentals in my judgment.
I was afraid to listen to this considering the reviews and scores. Turns out, not terrible at all. I’m a metal (80s thrash) fan, so this sounded on point. Nice, short compositions with aggressive drop-d rhythms and double-kick speed percussion. Not a fan of the growling vocals so I can see why others hate it and I also won’t be adding it to the heavy rotation album list.
I’ve tried a few times now to understand and appreciate the appeal of this genre and musical style. It’s just not jiving for me. Moreover, I’m not sure how one selects “the best” from this electronic-techno genre. I simply don’t hear the difference in the music. I suppose this one is as good as any, which is to say, not very.
Listened to this one dozens of times over the years. A very solid album - probably the best of the “sleaze-rock” albums - falling somewhere between the glam-hair metal and thrash coming out in the mid 80’s. And it’s definitely sleazy. Ranks up there as one of the best debuts of all time (hit singles, sales). Sure, a couple of made for radio hits but also some deep cut bangers. Every song is solid. No filler.
I like this album. I really enjoy progressive-jazz rock going back to the late 60s-early 70s. (i.e. King Crimson, Gentle Giant, ELP, early Genesis, etc). It’s different than my normal listen, but talented artists and a linch pin for future progressive music.
I was not familiar with Robert Wyatt’s solo career, although I’m familiar with Soft Machine, specifically The Soft Machine (1968). Also familiar with Brian Eno of Roxy Music. Putting these elements together was fun and a good listen. Somehow, I doubt this album attracted much attention in 1997. How do you compete with Radiohead, Third Eye Blind and Wu-Tang? But this is the perfect example of why I’m doing this project.
Don’t read reviews before you listen. What you like is what you like. You’ve been warned.
Familiar with most East/West coast artists/albums from this era, but this artist and album flew under my radar. Album art is eerily prophetic. It’s a really solid record. Jeru is a great lyricist with meaningful and clever lines. MC work is masterful. The DJ beats vacillated between average and unique. The album definitely holds up 30 years later. I’ll add this one to my rotation of early 90s rap for sure.
This style is not for me. Low-key ambient, electronic, meandering. Some cool rhythms on a few songs. Not really sure why this is a top 1,000 album I need to listen to - but OK.
Seems this guy is a complete trainwreck. But separating the art from the artist, this album from 20+ years ago is a very solid record. Real and raw. I liked it. Based on the comments, it seems he’s jumped off the rails since this release - but nonetheless worthy of a top 1,000 album.
Really love this CCR album. I can never decide between Willy and this one as my favorite from CCR. Probably Willy, but this is a close #2. Well produced, lyrically and musically excellent. It’s almost like a greatest hits album. 6 out of the 11 songs were released as singles and all charted. Up Around the Bend / Run Through the Jungle on the flip side was a monster single release in 1970. Great album.
Meh. I finished it. It’s a bit too chaotic for me. Raw, unpolished, not what I enjoy listening to primarily. I’ll mark it in the middle, not the worst on this list and definitely not the best.
For me, this is the best Bob Dylan album. I’ve listened to it dozens of times. It’s a 5 ⭐️ and on my desert island short list. One could argue it’s a top 20/25 album all time. The deep-track Visions of Johanna may be his best song ever. I understand why some may criticize his vocals, but he is the best song writer in the last 60 years. Bar none. The blues chord progressions are fantastic. Such a rich story-teller. A real masterpiece.
First hearing of this artist or album. Is it funk? Synth-Pop? Progressive Jazz? Blues-Rock? I believe the answer is “Yes”. It seems impossible to nail down a genre. And I actually enjoyed it. I can’t think of another album or style to compare it to from that era. Seems really innovative for the time (1977). Cool calypso beats, horns, funky synth, solid guitar work and effects. I may add this one to my rotation for “work-focus” albums. Or perhaps my “sipping Mojitos” rotation. Decent stuff.
Much of this album strays away from the folk music Mitchell was best known for as she experimented with a decidedly Jazz sound. The bass lines, percussion, vocals all sound more jazz than folk. Still a solid singer-songwriter and I thought the lyrics were deep and meaningful. While I really love Blue, I did not like this sound as much.
I’ve only heard 2 Isaac Hayes albums. This one today and Black Moses. I liked this one but I like Black Moses better. Good album.
I’ve always had a great deal of respect for Prince. For some reason, this album is not one I’ve listening to. I think I was more into the singles. However, this whole album is fantastic. The funk sound he pulls + his amazing guitar work. It’s his best in my opinion. It’s getting added to my desert island list. I’m glad it spun up today, otherwise I may have never listened to it. Solid 5 ⭐️ for me.
Interesting band, interesting album. I like Funk. I like Rock. I like Ska. I like Punk. Put them all in a blender for 40 minutes ? Yeah, it works for me.
I forgot how much I enjoy the Kinks. Especially Lola Vs.Powerman…. Such a great album. This one is a new album for me and I really liked it. I’m a sucker for a good concept album. I will give it a few more listens as, in my experience, it takes a few listens to really develop a good understanding of the narrative. Solid 4 for me.
Great record. Velvet Underground is ground-breaking, counter-cultural, underground ear candy to all that listen to them. They are odd as hell. However, John Cale was the real driver behind the madness. This album and White Heat/White Light are the best of the band and both are top 100 all-time albums in my book. Not sure which I like better. This one is unique as Nico adds more texture to the album flow - Femme Fatale is Fantastic- although, I understand why her vocals get such negative comments. Probably your favorite band’s favorite band. Easy 5 ⭐️.
I got through about half this album. More generational discord emanating from this list. Not sure what this genre is called, but I dislike it. I don’t understand why this one is in the 1,000 list. Don’t like it, don’t appreciate its contribution to music in general.
I’ve never liked the Yardbirds. Really just a cover band ripping off 30 year-old blues riffs without crediting the source. They have always sounded unimaginative, uncreative and boring while led by the 2 biggest riff-thief’s of all time.
However, sandwiched in between these 2 freeloaders is Jeff Beck. This album, with Beck at the helm, is different than the rest. It’s more creative, fun and wholly innovative with a wide range of styles, instruments and mood swings. Despite their general lack of good lyrics and crappy vocals, this is really their best album by a wide margin. Beck simply makes everyone around him better. Thank you Jeff Beck. RIP
40 days in and finally a jazz album. Really good album. So different than all his earlier recordings. While I prefer the hard-bop style, it’s tough to say I don’t like this. It was a ground-breaking jazz sound in 1969 and I love risky, game changing albums that are 5-6 years ahead of everyone else. Good listen.
This is their best album in my opinion. It has catchy riffs and hooks throughout, with some deep cut surprises (Hold Back the Rain, New Religion, The Chauffeur). And, of course, the singles are solid. And GAWD. The bass. John Taylor does not get enough credit for his bass playing. It’s really good, but not great. Solid 4⭐️ for me.
Liked this. Double is a bit long - with some work, a single LP may have been much more memorable. Nonetheless, this is very solid 80s New Wave.
I kind of forgot about this album. Not the biggest U2 fan, but this record smokes. Bullet the Blue Sky, One Tree Hill and Exit were a few of my deep track standouts aside from the well-known singles.
I like how the Byrds evolved over the years. Basically a Pop Cover Band > Original Psyche Rock > Killer Country Rock. Jim McQuinn is an excellent guitarist and has such a unique sound with the 12-String. The harmonies are always on point. I liked the majority of the songs on this record. While not my favorite Byrds album - that would be Sweetheart of the Rodeo - it’s still a solid record.
My first experience with Nick Cave. Weird one. I think I like Cave. I think. I need to listen to more. I’ll try some of the older albums to see if it sinks in. This album was good. Listened to the end and went back to repeat a few songs. 3⭐️
Just listened to this album a few months ago for the 5th or 6th time. In my opinion, it is the best of the ex-Beatle solo albums. Harrison is a fantastic song writer and musician. Although a double - album, there are no “skip” songs. Didn’t listen to Apple Jam on this run. It’s fun, but just a bit much after 2 LP’s. I’m scoring it sans Apple Jam (which pushes the runtime beyond most peoples tolerance). 76 minutes without it. Top 100 all time in my opinion. 5⭐️
First time listener to the Strokes. This is a very solid album. They’ve continued the long tradition of gritty New York underground bands like Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, Television and the Ramones. I like the muddy, LoFi feel to the production. Good lyrics, catchy riffs. New discovery for me. I’m a fan!! Solid 4⭐️
Solid 70’s Blues Rock. A collection of nomadic English musicians that found themselves together for 4 albums before all went on to bigger and better things (Humble Pie, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Solo). Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood were a great song-writing tandem while they lasted. This album is their best effort. No skip songs, but standouts are Miss Judy’s Farm and Stay With Me (Side 1). Too Bad and That’s All You Need (Side 2). 4⭐️ album. It will be spun again for sure.
Damn. One of my all-time favorites. It’s in my top 100 all-time. I don’t skip any song, but if I did, it would be on the 2nd disc - Disc 1 is 100% 🔥. Jimmy Chamberlain should be in the discussion for top 25 drummers ever. It was never the same without the rhythm section of both Jimmy and D’Arcy. But for this one - Easy 5 ⭐️
I’m admittedly stuck in the pre-2000 musical era. I don’t like the “evolution” of Alt Rock. Radiohead are some of the early pioneers of this evolution and they seem heavily over-represented on this list. I accepted Kid A and it was decent, however, everything from this album forward is simply not what I like. I’m giving this a 2⭐️. Kid A a 3⭐️ and all previous Radiohead albums are 4⭐️. While I admire their accolades, influence, creativity and ability to evolve and take music in a new direction - I simply don’t like the destination.
While I generally like 80s New Wave, this is not the best of it. Outside of the title track, which is great, this album had little else I enjoyed.
Not a big fusion jazz fan. I prefer the older Hard Bop, Modal and Free Jazz. However, the bass playing is exceptional. I appreciate Jaco’s contribution here as he was a true innovator in the industry.
Big band swing is not my favorite jazz, but this album is put together pretty well. It has some excellent brass and comes in pretty hot. Better than most.
If someone tried to create the perfect vocal harmonies using modern AI or some type of enhanced autotune software, they could not do better than CSN on this album. It’s a pleasure to listen to this work of art. The first “supergroup” and their best album.
I have no idea if this album belongs in the 1,000 all-time, but I thought it was great. This artist and album is a new discovery for me, I love 80s rock-metal and I refuse to apologize for it. In fact, I feel bad for the rest of you. The rock riffs, the spectacular falsetto vocals - it is all very reminiscent of a flat-out rock band playing the Sunset Strip in the late 80s, early 90s. Solid 4⭐️ for me.
Great album. Essential early US-based psyche-garage rock example. Rory Erikson is a madman-genius. Jug playing takes it to another level. 5 ⭐️
Been listening to the Pogues for 35 years. Very innovative and influential band - blending Irish folk, punk, jazz. Run Sodomy and the Lash and this album are among my favorite albums in the genre. That said, I can’t listen to the style hour after hour. It’s a very nice treat once in a bit in the right environment. Love ‘em and all the derivative artists that copied them.
Although I dislike electronica in general, this album is pretty good. My 2nd favorite Madonna album on the list. Nice rhythms and the vocals kept me listening. She has a great voice.
Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it. Solid bass lines and percussion. That was the highlight on most pieces. Doubt I will listen again on purpose.
Always loved it. Still do. Top 100 all time.
Not bad British punk band.
Total nostalgia. Upped the stars due to I knew every song and nearly every lyric.
Solid album. Rock, Prog, Blues, Jazz. Very versatile sound from the opening track to the orchestra at the end. Loved it.
Appreciate their legacy, not a music expression I’ve ever enjoyed. 3 ⭐️ for the innovation and introducing the style.
The foundation for West Coast - GFunk Rap. Unrefined, Raw and completely Immature. The bricks on which the next 10 years of outstanding Hip-Hop/Rap from the West Coast will be built. Every song. Stellar sample. 5⭐️
Great album. Worthy of a top 100 or 150 all time. The album gives off Beatle-esque , British Pop vibes. Every song is killer. 5⭐️
Not my usual listen, but I like it. Unique DJ with Asian, Caribbean influences.
Great album. The Reed, Bowie, Ronson collab makes the production, engineering, mixing top-notch. Lou Reed’s best solo album by quite a bit. Love this record.
Good funk, soul, jazz blend. I like some War once in a while. Of course, Low Rider and Spill the Wine are all-time greats (not on this album). I prefer War with Burdon, but this is a good one. 3⭐️
New Band-Album for me. You can definitely hear how they influenced the post-punk, new wave of more accomplished bands over the next 10 years. Overall, it was a good discovery and listen.
Another fantastic album from Young.
Not a huge Simon fan, but this album is solid and an easy and fun listen.
Google “Top Albums 1999”. This one is not even in the top 100 of the YEAR, much less 1001 albums I “need to hear”. More UK-centric bullshit from Dimtry. Did everyone in the whole wide-ass world miss this “masterpiece”. No, they didn’t. Hard Pass. This one truly makes me wonder why the hell I’m doing this project. Although probably better than a 1, I’m giving this a 1⭐️ to represent all the better albums that didn’t make this list.
Good album. Joplin was so bluesy and sultry. The Psyche-Acid Rock didn’t fit her well, her decision to leave the group was a good one. She is a blues singer. And great at it. Her vocals seem out of place with BB and the HCO. The stand out songs are with her on lead. The rest - where she provides backing and harmony - are simply not as good.
Not Superfly. Respect Curtis. RIP
Superfly Score > Shaft Score. Do Your Thing 🔥
Excellent P-Funk example and became Sample City. Although very different, this album and Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain are all-time top Funk albums. Bootsy’s on 🔥.
Damn. Masterpiece - Front to back. The 2nd of four consecutive 5 ⭐️ albums from Pink Floyd. All 4 are in the top 100 all-time. 🔥🔥
Out of respect for the project, I’m listening to all the 2nd-tier Brit-Pop albums Dimtry included in the 1,000 list. The truth is it’s not very good and, so far, I’ve found 25 albums from 1985 that are not on his list and far better than this. If there were music police, Dimtry would be charged with a crime.
The best album from one of the greatest power trios of all time. Star of the show is Jack Bruce. This band worked because Clapton’s input was kept to a minimum.
Starts Funky…Ends Smooth. In my top 5 Jazz albums. His Jazz-Funk Fusion is excellent. The tight rhythms on Chameleon are so good and make me just want to hit the repeat button over and over. Every song is different.
Not a huge fan of vocal jazz. Less so from the 50’s. Billie is deservedly a highly acclaimed vocalist, but this album is not the best example in my opinion.
Great Progressive Rock band and album. Probably in my personal top 100.
I’ve heard of the White Stripes, but never listened to them. Very good garage Rock. Meg is 🔥🔥🔥 I be will adding to my rotation for sure. Good shit.
Historic. But 33 years too late. So, not historic.
New band for me. Another of the Rock Revival movement in the early 2000’s I completely missed. This album smokes.
I’m not qualified to rate this, but I enjoyed it. African beats, Senegal language. It’s a 3-star because I just don’t know enough. It’s a good listen though.
ABBA is such an occasional fun listen. Glad it popped today.
Although there are no “hit” singles, front to back this is my favorite Doors album. Lyrically, musically fantastic. Peace Frog may the best groove they ever wrote.
Don’t appreciate the genre-style
Another banger from Neil.
Including Bayou and Green River on this list and not Willie and the Poor Boys is a crime.
Do not like electronic music.
Top 5 Rap album. Fantastic.
Way too baroque for me. While I love the addition of her vocals with Velvet Underground as a pace change, she does not stand well on her own in my opinion.
Solid punk album. Surprised this one and not Los Angeles, but both are good.
Another Pink Floyd masterpiece.
Solid effort from Taylor. I like the songwriting and overall flow. Drags in places, but also has some really well-written catchy songs.
Not a random generator. RIP Brian Wilson. I think it takes a few runs through this album to appreciate the writing, creativity and production levels that went into this record. I get why it is considered one of the greatest pieces of musical art in history.
Solid, but not the best from REM. Leans a touch commercial for me.
Not my go to style, but I enjoyed it.
Undeniably belongs on this list. One of the best compositions of the 80s.
Masterpiece. The standard for all the followed.
Meh. I don’t think I’m smart enough to get this one. When he started reading the Baskin Robbins menu, I was thoroughly confused. I’ve heard worse albums that made this list, so guess I’ll go down the middle.
The older I get the more Neil Young becomes one of my favorite artists. Country Rock, Hard Folk Rock, Proto-Grunge. The riffs, the distortion, the lyrics. Another banger. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the best hard rock albums of the 70s.
Probably my favorite album from the period-genre. Fantastic samples, mixing and production.
An excellent example of early US-based Garage Rock. I would have liked more originals than covers, but the few originals are great. An early precursor for more accomplished US based Garage and Proto Punk music (MC5, Stooges, etc). There were not many bands like the Sonics in 1966, that’s for damn sure.
Big fan of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell RIP. Great record.
The Zombies were on par or better than other, more commercially successful UK contemporaries (Beatles, Stones, Kinks) unfortunately, with only 2 releases and limited touring, they never received the same recognition at the time. This album is on a short-list of the greatest albums recorded in that period.
Been a Grateful Dead fan for quite some time. This is my favorite studio album; different than their earlier albums. Almost every song was incorporated into their live performances - that’s how solid this album is. No filler. Exceptional writing and arrangement.
Really hate rating a Madonna album so low, but I didn’t enjoy it.
Love this album. It’s the only John album I own and listen to it a few times a year. Better than any greatest hits album. His best by far.
Not for me. Don’t view this one as a top 1,000 album.
For some reason I like Crowded House even though the style is not my favorite. I really like their debut, not sure why this one is on the list and the other is not.
Good band. Good album. Solid 80’s post-punk.
A different sound to Springsteen. Less commercial. Enjoyed the album.
Interesting. Wish I understood the lyrics. But this is why I’m doing this project. I enjoyed it overall.
A standard for hard core punk. Solid band, solid album. A top pick for punk fans. The politically charged lyrics and solid riffs make this debut standout among others.
The man has 70+ solo studio albums over his lengthy career, but only about 3 or 4 of them are absolute classic Willie. This is one of them.
Enjoyed the vocalist. The album was fairly subdue for my mood. Getting through the whole thing was a bit of a slog.
Grunge before it had a name. Front to back all killer, no filler. 5⭐️ heat.
Not a big synth-pop fan, but decent 80s album. About half the songs I enjoyed, the other half - nah. Seconds, Don’t You Want Me are standouts.
I’m on the fence whether a Live album should be considered on a TOP album list as it is a compilation - however, this album is definitely a Top-10 Live album ever. The “overdub” criticism is way over blown. Some was done by the admission of the band and manager - however - this was common for 70’s “live” albums, including the “holy grail” of live albums - KISS Alive.
This one rocks.
There was nothing for me on this one.
Great albums need 3 key elements: Music (lyrics, composition) + Production (engineering, mixing) + Influence (how did it change the art of music?). Granted, these are all subjective because, well, it’s art.
But it is tough to argue this isn’t one of the greatest 10 albums ever produced. Easy 5.
Solid vocalist, but not my favorite genre.
I’ve heard the name of the band but never listened. I don’t know what the rest of their catalog sounds like, but I loved this high-speed metal mania.
Warm beats, cool brass. Good listen. My 2nd or 3rd album from an African artist I never would have heard otherwise. Well orchestrated and produced.
Metallica fan and this is the 5th best album in their catalogue in my opinion. I don’t listen to it much. It was the album that launched them into mainstream. However, even the worst Metallica album is better than 10% of the albums that made this list.
Got a list in my head of the Top 10 Progressive Rock albums ever. This album is on that list. Easy 5⭐️
Not a bad album. Not a good one either. Very unremarkable. Not sure why it’s on this list.
Love it or hate it, it’s one of - if not the - most important punk albums of all time. Maybe Stooges first album could compete (before punk music had a name). Dirty, scroungy, raw garage punk album. Politically aggressive, solid riffs and hooks throughout.
Not a good listen for me. Made it about 25% through - not uptempo enough for me. I’m sure some will enjoy but not me.
Again, not a random generator. RIP Ozzy. Not my personal favorite Sabbath album, however, gets bonus points for introducing such a groundbreaking and influential heavy sound that has been imitated for over 50 years, spawning several rock sub-genres. The influence of this band, album and sound cannot be overstated - and it all started here.
One of a handful of modern music founding fathers. This album definitely belongs on the list.
Solid Garage Rock Revival band and album. Liked it, would listen again.
Very solid British pop-punk. I really enjoyed the whole album. Great riffs and hooks throughout.
Really well written and produced album. Not my favorite style, but I understand the art and it’s well done. I get why it’s a top 20-25 album ever.
Not my favorite Young album, but undeniably very solid.
I enjoyed This Nations Saving Grace more than this debut. Maybe the writing and production matured, but this one was a bit of a slog to push thru.
Late bloomer on the Dinosaur Jr. experience and I really enjoy this album. Proto-grunge, Lo-Fi garage rock.
Not a bad Police album. Not my favorite record from them, but Stewart Copeland smokes on this record. He’s in nearly everyone’s list of all-time Top Ten Drummers, including mine.
Before I listened, I assumed The Verve was a one-hit wonder… turns out I was right. Since the “one-hit” isn’t here, it’s a 2⭐️
Traffic is solid early jazz-rock. This is not the best Traffic album in my opinion, but it’s a nice chill listen.
I’m OK with the Black Keys in smaller doses. A whole album just doesn’t hold my attention - they’re not that good.
Damn, I love hair metal. Not ashamed. These guys were “made for radio” rock stars and absolute hit machines. Def Leppard perfected the hair metal formula better than any of them without losing their shit and turning into douchebags.
I don’t typically enjoy vocal jazz, however, Amy is the exception. This is a 4⭐️ for me. I enjoy Back to Black more, but both are great.
REM and I have never really “clicked”. I’ve listened to nearly their full catalogue and I would put this one mid-way through with the earlier releases ranking higher.
One of the top 20 albums all time. Every song is killer and THE pop standard.
Best 44 minutes of my day. Total banger.
I’m a Ramones fan. I’m sure this album was included because of the huge punk influence it generated, but Road to Ruin is a better album in my opinion and not on the list (this is the only Ramones album on the list)
Obscure, underrated musician genius that died way too early. This is my favorite of his albums.
Haven’t listened to a lot of Nu Metal, but it’s been growing on me. Really enjoyed this album although I haven’t listened to anything else from the band catalog. Found the blend of influences and musical styles really well executed. Hip-Hop, Metal, Grunge, etc. Cool, aggressive sound.
My first vinyl purchase in 1982. Listened to it dozens and dozens and dozens of times. My mom thought I was a Satan worshipper (people actually burned this album).
Total Eclipse was missing on the OG release, replaced by Gangland - which is the only song on the album I even consider skipping. I’m glad the 1998 remaster (and most subsequent re-releases) included them both. This is my favorite Maiden album - although I admittedly love them all (except perhaps the Blaze Daze)
Total game-changer in 1982. Easy 5 ⭐️. UP THE IRONS !!!
Fundamentally I don’t believe a compilation album (which includes a live album) should be a list such as this. Especially when it’s 22 minutes and mostly covers of other artists. And especially when the artist doin the covers is also a pedophile. She was 13. And you abused her.
In my opinion, Mr Dylan has composed 5 albums that stand out from all his others. This is one of those albums, perhaps the best of the 5.
Really enjoyed this album. I know “Chicago” and I generally don’t enjoy their music, but this debut? In 1969? Solid.
Fantastic rhythm section. Added to rotation for when the mood hits me. Jazz-Rock is a great listen at times and this is a top choice.
I’m not the biggest Pantera fan, but this album is very solid - front to back. The Abbots (RIP) are so on point and Phil at his least annoying. In my personal collection and my favorite from them.
Good album. Enjoy the Smiths. The Queen is Dead is better in my opinion. M
I’ve never found the Stones that interesting musically. They charted a bunch of hits, but most of their albums never pulled together for me. Their best albums hit 4 stars for me, but this is not one of those.
This is not his best album.
Appreciate why it’s held in high regard due to the lyrically content, production and engineering. Not my favorite genre-style.
Their best album. Enjoyed it.
Good album by the best band from Boise, ID.
Total transparency. I consider Hendrix the best and most influential guitarist in history. All 3 of his studio albums prior to his death are 5⭐️ albums in my book. If I had to rank them - Axis (5), Experienced (4.9), Ladyland (4.8)…. But this is all pedantic. They are all 5 ⭐️ 😂
Really great Jazz-Rock album, however, I understand Steely Dan is not for everyone. The engineering and production on this album is stellar which is the primary reason it is so highly regarded. It has grown on me over time and listens. It gets a 5 ⭐️ from me.
Just a little annoying, mostly good.
Solid Pixies album. Not my favorite of theirs, but their first 3 are all solid Pixies.
One of THE definitive rap albums of the last 30 years.
In my personal top 5 live albums ever.
Heard of the artist. Never listened. I enjoy the style and genre. Will push through more of their catalog. This album is a bit too long for me and probably could been significantly tightened up to a damn great single offering. Is this really their best release?
+1 as its last recording. -1 because nothin is original. +1 because he covers them so damn well. +1 because it’s Cash. I’m adding this to my personal album list. I loved it in a 4⭐️kind of way.
I know this band is considered a pioneer of the style and they have a huge cult following, I’m just having trouble connecting with the 100 electronic music - of any era. It’s me. Not them.
I know this may be a bit petty, but this is his 4th or 5th best album. Full Moon Fever, Damn the Torpedos, Wildflowers - all better by quite a bit and not on the list. Lazy job by Dimery.
Top 5 all-time Jam Band. Top 5 all-time Live album. RIP Dickie Betts. Your music loves on.
A bit too far out for me.
So much fun. Riffs are awesome. Megadeth’s 2nd finest output (Rust In Peace). Mustaine > Hammett. There. I said it.
Not a big Joel fan, however, this album is fantastic as it showcases the best of Joel at his peak. Fantastic writing, compositions and production.
Super smooth. One of my faves. My 1st or 2nd Fav. Sign O the Times is the nearest competitor. OK, yeah Sign wins, but both are in my personal collection and fantastic.
Beautifully produced. Excellent lyrics and writing. Really enjoy the smooth jazz-rock along with Knopfler’s brilliant work on the guitar. Just a pleasure to listen to front to back.
Don’t love Beck, but this album was decent. A bit long for me, but I liked the style fusion and the sampling. Good work.
A top Rap/Hip Hop all time. Love it all.
Seemingly years ahead of its time. Such a solid punk album from the early 80’s. Belongs on the list.
Teen Spirit may be the best rock song in the last 35 years. It’s that well written. The riffs are iconic. This entire album is killer, but my deep track favs are the ones that lean punk: Breed, Drain You, Lounge Act. Absolute killer all the way through.
Great album. RIP J Bonham.
