Actually liked it way more than I expected to. Was ready for some spiritual lyrical miracle boom bap jazz rap but was pleasantly surprised at how pop-minded it was and the different sounds going on. Ultimately not the kind of rap album I will ever voluntarily listen to again but I COULD and I wouldn't hate it

Fela Kuti
4/5
At first, I wasn't sure that it lived up to the raucousness of my fav Fela Kuti studio recordings but as it went on I felt more and more hypnotized and really enjoyed it a lot.
R.E.M.

Sam Cooke
4/5
Listened to it like 3 or 4 times, energy is insane and it's so fun to hear the people freaking out. Went to a concert last night and was thinking about this album and how I was wishing every concert was just 30 minutes of nonstop intense bangers... I think the only thing preventing me from putting it at 5 for right now is that this kind of music resonates most with me when the TUNES are really undeniable and for some reason despite listening several times the melodies and hooks didn't stay with me that much. This might be a skill issue on my part tho!
Fav song: Feel It (Don't Fight It)
Michael Jackson
2/5
Have decided I am rating albums based on how much I enjoy rather than my critical opinion of them
There are certain pieces of art I have sorta purposefully avoided because i feel like i have already absorbed them through cultural osmosis and they exist in this weird limbo of already knowing a ton about them but also having never interacted with them before... like the Godfather as a movie example or like Gravity's Rainbow for the books. where Godfather is like the most "movie" movie you know? "it insists upon itself" Yeah okay bro anyway peter griffin chicken fight okay cool
anyways Thriller is the music versoin of that for me where i have heard each song 1000 times but only in 30 second pieces over the course of my life to where it like doesnt feel like a real album to me, so it was an interesting experience to actually listen to it
and like i like some of the michael jackson songs but what does he know about halloween
Like why is it halloween evil themed in the middle of a block buster pop album?? why is he lowkey flirting with paul mccartney? Every song for me sounds more like a ringtone than a song, Beat it is like some bon jovi type vibes, idk bro its just not for me sorry but Human Nature is a banger fs
Fav song: Human Nature

Love Lauryn Hill but had never listened to this before! Pretty much every song was awesome what else can I say ^_^
Fav song: Fu-Gee-La
Deep Purple
1/5
I honestly like a fair amount of music that is obviously inspired by this so I can definitely appreciate it from that angle. I also don't mind when they just pick a riff and rock out for a second. But pretty much everything else they do makes me want to kill myself
Fav song: Speed King
Meat Loaf
2/5
It's actually impressive how closely this straddles the line between music I like and music that makes me want to go postal. The Todd Rundgren production definitely helps, and when the song writing is good I actually don't mind it that much. The fact that it is sorta winkingly over-the-top can veer towards endearing for me, but at times the melodies are just so uninteresting that the cheesiness is all that is left for me and then I just don't give a shit. Ultimately none of the songs really stuck with me but I at least found it interesting to listen to and ponder whether or not I liked it whereas Deep Purple was just a slog of hatred and suicidality

Gonna liveblog my thoughts as I listen
Tom Sawyer: Have obviously "listened" to this song through cultural osmosis but have never sat down and actually listened. 30 seconds in and the vocals make me want to kill myself. Synths are unforgivable but I sadly must admit the chord progression around 45 seconds hit a bit harder than I'd like. Holy fuck synth solo is the worst thing I have ever heard. Guitar solo is nails on a chalkboard but bassline is actually kinda cool. I'm hearing "government" "society" and "discontent" in the lyrics, seems pretty redacted so that's cool. It's not really lingering on any one idea for too long like a lot of the world's worst prog rock does so I can appreciate that. Definitely could have ended one minute earlier without losing ANYTHING interesting.
Red Barchetta: Once again, an utterly detestable synth. Kinda confused because musically the intro is like a nice jangle pop song and then the singing starts and I want to jump off a bridge. Oh okay cool now they're like rocking out which sounds pretty bad. Fuck the bridge is so terrible. Okay like in my brain I can appreciate that the musicianship feels very tight and intense but the whole thing is just so immensely SINCERE like they are staring me in the eyes and wanting me to like the music SO BADLY I just can't take it seriously...like each musical idea is like "hey now check THIS OUT BRO!" I honestly don't even hate the sound of a lot of this song aside from the vocals and the massively outdated keyboards which isn't totally their fault... but like conceptually I just cannot find any sort of appreciation
YYZ: I was taking a shit during this song and don't remember a single thing. Everything going on in the bathroom was more interesting to me
Limelight: This is definitely the best so far and makes me think that if they would just make over the top pop music like The Darkness I would hate them a lot less
The Camera Eye: What do you want me to say? It's annoying. Bass is cool.
Witch Hunt: ahaha Woah creepy dude .. Nice ..!Oh okay now its freaking epic AWESOMEE <3
Vital Signs: We just don't have a need for this music anymore. It's not useful at this point in human history. It's fine. I just don't care
Fav song: Limelight

Fav song: Disco 2000 or Bar Italia
Björk
3/5
I've listened to this before and liked it but have never loved any Bjork I have listened to despite everything about my music taste pointing towards me having her as one of my fav artists. It's strange! I feel like it's weird to be lukewarm on Bjork but here we are. Maybe the issue is I need to listen on my "jetto blaster"
Fav song: Venus as a Boy tbh :pray emoji:
Bill Callahan
3/5
I really have trouble taking the "why do straight guys get so bloody pressed" aahh voice seriously (especially when he is literally speak-singing gibberish or repeatedly saying the same phrase over and over) but it's fine I guess. Another one I have listened to in the past and been very lukewarm on.
Fav song: Too Many Birds
The Jam
3/5
I like this kinda music more when it pulls more from pop rather than rock but still enjoyed!
Fav song: Music for the Last Couple

2/5
Thought this would be a lock for a 1 for me. Expected to hate every song and ended up hating 1 or 2, being indifferent to 3 or 4, and slightly enjoying Hitch a Ride, Something About You, and Let Me Take You Home Tonight. It's almost like their sincerity and theater kid-ness won me over in the end. If they kept going and were even more kitsch they would probably end up in Thin Lizzy territory which is my favorite of these kinds of bands.
Fav song: Hitch a Ride
The xx
2/5
One of the most 2009 albums ever recorded. Completely without substance and attempts to coasts on aesthetics. The aesthetics are occasionally nice, and when they actually try to write a song I kinda like it, but most of it is just nothing to me. From a critical perspective, I find it pretty offensive, but personally for me it is fine background music (there's a reason why "Intro 10 hours plus rain sounds" is so popular... this shit is meant to be played but not listened to).
Fav song: Crystallized
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Ian and Anthony really knocked it out of the park with this one
Fav track: Mayonnaise (maybe? loved most of them aside from Disarm which I was lukewarm on)

Emmylou Harris
3/5
First listened to this album in 2020 and haven't revisited since so it was a lot of fun. Insanely good album cover. Emmylou is an artist who has a lot of songs that I think are 5/5 but maybe does not have a masterpiece album so I think there are a few songs on here that don't do a whole lot for me but also a few that are amazing so it's a mixed bag. Close to a 4 might readjust later
Fav song: If I Could Only Win Your Love

First half insanely good like 5/5 for me, drops a bit in the middle, then gets awesome again, EDTION breaks my heart tho :/
Fav song: Mama Said (AMAZING!!!)
Eric Clapton
3/5
I mean I don't know if I clapped a TON but it wasn't bad (for me) IDK man I listened to it on fathers day maybe thats why I felt a soft spot for it, when they were talking about him waggling his meat in a gypsy's face or whatever I felt a little off but when he smooth crooning country boy mode I felt that little twang in my tummy man, low end of 3 for me but obvious step above fucking RUSH like come on man
Fav song: Please Be With Me
The B-52's

Like Smashing Pumpkins this is an artist that I thought I had no interest in listening to but actually ended up enjoying a ton. Felt way more punk than I would have guessed

Fav song: You Really Got Me
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
Pretty crazy songwriting, on some of the tracks it felt like she just had new hook after new hook yet for some reason it didn't really grab me? But overall enjoyed listening to it so idk
Fav song: Pick Up Your Feelings
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
It was completely tolerable. Absolutely zoned out while listening
Fav song: Going Up (I guess?)
Pink Floyd
2/5
I wanted to enjoy it, I truly went into it trying to like it and telling myself I was not just going to write off Pink Floyd because I'm too cool for them, but the overly grandiose art rock opera thing is just not for me anymore fr. Stuff like In the Flesh (both versions though I'm partial to the one with less slurs) resonates with me because it's just so musical and has a very unique feeling to it but the rest just feels like a vehicle to convey a plot that I don't give a FUCK about, and frankly I more or less disagree with the idea of music having a "plot" anyway
Fav song: In the Flesh?
Radiohead
3/5
I was a huge fan of Radiohead as a young lad but in adulthood I have really struggled to find them interesting. Here is my working theory: they don't go freaky-deaky mode enough. And maybe that's a function of hindsight; I know that Radiohead is ultimately very groundbreaking and that it might sound "normal" now because music has normalized around them, but they still just don't get FREAKY enough with it! Like even on this album I can feel them flirting with some krautrock or jazzy post-rock stuff and I want them to just go for it and take some RISKS and get FUNKY on a white boy but it just all feels so calculated and NORMAL! I want there to be a sense of danger and excitement to the art I love, and that's why I also struggle with bands like Pink Floyd. It just feels so "correct" and like really "successful" at being "good."
So like to be clear I enjoyed the album a lot and I enjoyed listening to pretty much every song, yet there are very few I envision myself returning to. It's interesting. Even after listening to this as thoughtfully as possible, I don't feel closer to understanding whether or not I actually LIKE Radiohead at this point in my life.
One cool thing about this though is that I don't think I had ever actually listened to Hail to the Thief in its entirety when I was younger so hearing new tracks was neat.
Fav song: There, There
Gang Of Four

Fav song: Ether

3/5
this is some real working class music.....most of yall dont understand .. And like it's kinda terrible but also kinda cool in the sense of british punks in the 80s using traditional music styles to tell about the plight of the working class. The issue is that MOST music that sounds like this is really inauthentic and just using these sounds for weird pastiche aesthetics, but in this case the sounds and styles feel very authentic and purposeful. I am probably never going to listen to this again but did not hate it

2/5
More bearable than I'd envisioned but for the most part pretty boring. I like the pop songs though. The title track alone drags this down to a 2 for me though.
Fav track: Oh Yoko!
David Bowie
2/5
Not really sure why this exists or is on this list, I am not a David Bowie fan nor have I ever purposefully listened to a David Bowie song or album before, but I am certain he has better records. I really liked the first song and was really expecting the quality to keep up since the album was on the list of greatest albums ever but instead it got worse and worse until he did one of the world's worst Beatles covers. Progressively more and more atonal and annoying every song. The fuck is wrong with this guy? I'm getting pissed off just typing this. Also wasn't he a pedophile? Anyway I hope he dies soon *checks notes* oh goodie!
Fav song: Young Americans (which I actually like for the record)
Dwight Yoakam
3/5
Very very nice Mr. Yolkem. Amazing to see how this egg of an idea hatched and came to life. I was all scrambled up when it comes to giving this a 3 or a 4, but now that it's OVER it's EASY to settle on a 3. Omelette.
Fav song: One More Name
Gary Numan
3/5
Listened with robbie and enjoyed it, obviously dated so it doesn't exactly sound NEW, MAN but it's cool
Fav song: Conversation
Rage Against The Machine
3/5
Pretty fun though also hard to take seriously since I did not grow up listening to it. FREEEDOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!
Fav song: Settle For Nothing
Serge Gainsbourg
1/5
Personally do not enjoy hearing some crusty 40-something art guy whisper about pedophilia, I feel like I am forced to see relationships like this daily and don't need to absorb it more often than that. Has the air of trying desperately to be supremely cool but I just find it utterly distasteful to listen to, but hey that's just me
Fav song: En Melody
Beck
3/5
I have always had Beck in my head as Radiohead for 40 year olds that think music released in the early 2000s is "new" and get all their album recs from the Grammys but I actually quite enjoyed this, the more over-produced orchestral stuff did not really vibe with me but quite enjoyed the sort of alt-country stuff. Nice job Beckerson
Fav song: Sunday Sun
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I'm not a thespian I'm an ameripian. Enjoyed way more than I expected. Is this what normal people think Queen/Billy Joel/other bullshit karaoke music sounds like??
Fav song: Thunder Road
Kings of Leon

Charles Mingus
5/5
This Mingus album is a lingus test for good music. Er, sorry, litmus test. It created a sort of mingua franca for all future jazz releases. Er, sorry, lingua franca. Please don't forget it's mingUS not mingYOU or mingME
Fav song: Group Dancers prolly which has that riff that is good enough for an entire album of its own (also repeated in track 4)

Fav song: Cop Shoot Cop...
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
Tough one to rate. Obviously really good music and Ella's vocals are gorgeous but it's undeniably tough to get through this whole collection. I feel like this would have made a lot of sense as a release in 1959 when owning this set would have been like paying for a Spotify subscription basically and you could listen to like pretty much every pop song that ever existed sung by the best singer, but in the age of streaming it just makes a lot less sense. I am rating these albums based on how much I enjoyed listening to them so gotta go with 3 here but I could see it being 4 if it was just one elpee's worth of toons :)
Fav song: The Half of It Dearie Blues (which is sooo good)

Liked it a lot as a lad, really not fun to listen to now. Feels so whiny and incel. Dance songs that don't make me want to dance, emotional songs that don't make me feel emotion, etc

Todd Rundgren

Fav song: Empty House
The Kinks
3/5
Don't see any reason why I'd listen to this when Village Green Preservation Society exists but it's still overall pleasant but just soooo British... I'd rather listen to SOMETHING ELSE hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahah
Fav song: Waterloo Sunset or Lazy Old Sun
2/5
It sucks, what else do you want me to say? They called this psychedelic rock in 1970 because they invented weed in 1971
Fav song: Space Child
Dr. Dre
2/5
Interesting stuff, still sounds pretty subversive despite being more than 30 years old (!!!) which is cool. Some of the beats have aged well while others with that crazy loud G-funk blaring fire alarm synth can get quite annoying. If I found the rapping engaging at all I would probably rate this a 3 but as it stands I can't say I enjoyed it THAT much though more than I expected to
Fav song: Lyrical Gangbang (Great drums)
PJ Harvey
4/5
Badass
Fav song: Fountain or Oh My Lover or Plants and Rags or Water
The Shamen
2/5
okay so like obviously it's a bit ridiculous to rate a house album while sitting and listening to it motionless while working my office job but this era of house is just SOOOOO BORING to me at least listening to it in album format which is what i am doing and rating it on. so ya low 2 for me
Fav song: Don't have one
The White Stripes
3/5
Was a big White Stripes fan growing up and to me their music now just feels absolutely culturally irrelevant in nearly every way. Still a few bangers though and even the non-bangers are fine. Sometimes I wish they leaned into the garage style like 5x as hard and just made it sound like absolute shitty fucking cardboard but so it goes
Fav song: Red Rain or Instinct Blues
GZA
2/5
I have no problems with it. It's obviously good. Sometimes I like the drums. But this type of rap just makes me feel absolutely nothing. It doesn't move me. It doesn't touch me. Sorry world
Fav song: Swordsman (by a LOT)
Pixies
3/5
Has never been my fave of this style of music but still as fun as a barrel of monkeys, though my personal musical biases make me want less of the atonal stuff and more the frickin TUNES brother
Fav song: Debaser
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
2/5
Pretty torturous for me in all honesty. White people should never have touched the blues let alone British whites.
Fav song: Another Man
ABBA
4/5
Obviously amazing though on occasion veers into territory that is a bit too theatrical for my tastes (Money Money Money is worst offender for me)
Fav song: Dancing Queen because it's easy lock for top 5 pop songs ever written maybe even top 3, but other than that I really liked Dum Dum Diddle
Deep Purple
2/5
I think it would be fair of me to start with talking about some of the things I like about this album. I liked:
1. That it is definitely more interesting than Deep Purple in Rock and, largely, their songs are much cooler performed live than in the studio
2. The use of the organ as a rock-n-roll instrument generally
3. Some parts of Lucille
4. The quiet breakdown near the beginning of Strange Kind of Woman
5. The overall sincerity of this band. They are trying REALLY hard to make epic music and rock out, and I can respect that
6. The fact that they have an overall aesthetic sensibility that is trackable and tangible and is even reflected in some of the song titles like Speed King, Black Night, and Highway Star. Ultimately these aesthetics don't amount to much, but again, I can respect it
7. Solo on Highway Star
8. Harsh noise intro on Lazy
9. Deep Purple is a pretty cool band name
10. Instrumental section in second half of Space Truckin' was actually cool asf
11. There are moments that, even in 2025, sound like that they threaten to devolve into chaos. This is honestly pretty sick and probably sounded even crazier at the time
With that said, unfortunately, the things I hate greatly outnumber and outperform the things that I like. I'll list a few here:
1. The fact that they have an overall approach to music that values quantity over quality. The songs? Make them longer, it'll be sick. The vocals? Scream louder, it'll be fuckin epic. Solos? Let's give each instrument a solo.
2. In fact, the drum solo track as a whole I hated and really captures the errors of their approach. They dedicate SO MUCH TIME to a drum solo that GOES NOWHERE with the thought that people will eat it up because it's an 11-minute drum solo. And undoubtedly people did. But when they went home, they certainly said "It was amazing, they did an 11-minute drum solo!" but, if forced to name WHY they liked that or what their favorite part of the drum solo was, they would draw a blank. And that's because there weren't parts. It was just an aimless drum solo for grandiosity's sake. I don't like that
3. When the vocalist vocalizes the guitar notes, I want to die
4. The vocals generally are grating and irritating to me
5. Not to be a broken record, but the LENGTH OF THE SONGS. There's no reason these songs need to be this long. They basically are composed of like 3 ideas, and usually the ideas aren't all that good or dissimilar from the ideas on their other songs. Why do I have to listen to them repeat their shitty ideas over and over?
6. The tone of the organ can, at times, be really fucking awful
7. The lyrics are nothing for me
8. Smoke on the Water, which is garbage
9. The fact that, in the version I listened to, I had to listen to Speed King twice and Black Night THREE TIMES
10. They sequenced a live album with songs that ended their sets multiple times, so several times in the middle of the album he says "Thanks, goodnight" which makes absolutely no fucking sense
11. It sounds bad
So I can be fair to my dear speed kings from Deep Purple and, compared to Deep Purple in Rock, there is much more for me to enjoy here. But ultimately that is not saying much and I would much rather be listening to most other things (not including Sex Packets)
Fav song: Space Truckin'
Beastie Boys
1/5
Certainly made me feel ill
Fav song: Rhymin & Stealin because it samples the coolest Led Zeppelin song but other than that I fucking hate it
OutKast
4/5
Really good for me
Fav song: Church (Speakerboxxx) / She Lives in My Lap or Hey Ya (The Love Below)
Missy Elliott
4/5
Pretty much every song is amazing
Fav song: Not sure, maybe Bring the Pain?
Ice Cube
2/5
Actually enjoyed it much more than I expected to, although it dragged on too long. Ice Cube just isn't enough of a charismatic or inventive rapper to enjoy listening to for an hour. But there are some legitimately interesting sounds here even when his flows drag on and he starts talking about how NOT anti-semitic he is for the fifth time
Fav song: When Will They Shoot? or Wicked
Bob Dylan
3/5
I sincerely wish I loved this and maybe I will at some point, but I listen to a song like Visions of Johanna which is supposedly one of Bob Dylan's finest songs and I just feel nothing. Cerebral music, and also cerebral art in general, doesn't really do anything for me because I'm redacted or something
Fav song: One of Must Know
U2
2/5
It's just absolutely fucking nothing, close to rating this a 1 just because of how nothing it is for me
Fav song: Sunday Bloody Sunday I guess
Beck
3/5
Kinda fun I guess, alternated between "interesting" and "annoying" for me. High 2 or low 3, will log as 3 fir now because I enjoyed it more than fuckass Devandra Banhart
Fav song: Sissyneck
Devendra Banhart
2/5
Hated it
Fav song: Poughkeepsie

3/5
Don't have a strong opinion on it sry
Fav song: Make Up

Fav song: Street Life
2/5
I tried really hard to like it, I honestly did. Just not for me though I see the appeal
Fav song: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Gillian Welch
4/5
Fav song: I Dream a Highway
Janelle Monáe
2/5
Agree with Bergen, just trying to do too much. The of Montreal collab says it all lmao. Also has an air of intellectualism that bothers me. I didn't hate the first half but the second half started to be too much for me especially when she started doing vocal jazz. Feels like it is trying really hard to be a good album which limits its ability to be genuinely creative and spontaneous. Funny to look back at how big of a release this was in the indie sphere back in 2010
Fav song: probably Tightrope tbh sorry
Fairport Convention
3/5
Liked more than I expected to though sometimes felt like I was at a renaissance fair
Fav song: Percy's Song (really good for me)
Klaxons
2/5
Just feels like they weren't in the mood to write songs most of the album. When they wrote songs, I didn't hate it. So much a product of its time though that it is definitely pretty grating nowadays
Fav song: Gravity's Rainbow
R.E.M.
4/5
super mega lovely
Fav song: Sitting Still
Black Sabbath
3/5
My problem with Sabbath is that their trademark sound is actually fucking sick but then they start doing all this other stuff that I don't care about it and then I get annoyed. But even with the piano rock ballad and the stuff that veers out of doom and into blues I still like the album. I just wish they went full steam ahead with the scary giallo doom stuff. Prob 3.5 for me and I enjoyed it more than their debut
Fav song: Wheels of Confusion
Paul Simon
2/5
ugly album cover, shitty album. "cars are cars, all over the world! cars are cars, all over the world. :)" SHUT THE FUCK UP
Fav song: Hearts and Bones
Neil Young
4/5
Love it but my problem with the albums generally considered to be Neil Young's best are that they are kinda all over the place in terms of mood and sound which FOR ME makes it hard to place them as 5/5 even if I do like all the songs, which in this case I do. For me Zuma and On the Beach are the 5/5 in his catalog though I kinda doubt they are on this list
Fav song: Tell Me Why which is either my first or second fav song by him (other contender is Cortez the Killer just fyi)
Bill Evans Trio
4/5
Fucking awesome
Fav song: Gloria's Step
Hookworms
2/5
My favorite Yeasayer album. It's weird because I enjoyed listening to it but I fully intend to go the entire rest of my life without ever listening to it for another second. It added nothing to my brain
Fav song: idk Shortcomings maybe?
Depeche Mode
4/5
(guy you dont wanna be near voice) I loved the neoclassical darkwave tracks
Fav song: Strangelove or I Want You Now
Amy Winehouse
4/5
soaring highs no pun intended rip but a few of the tracks dont do it for me and doesnt have anything i love quite as much as the super homophobic song off of Frank
Fav song: Tears Dry On Their Own
Fats Domino
2/5
I can appreciate the influence but I'm not waking up in the morning thinking hey let me play that Fats Domino banger
Fav song: Blue Monday (NEW ORDER REFERENCE?!)
Suicide
2/5
Pretty wild and unhinged for 77 but also quite unpleasant to listen to at most times. Feels interesting and cool in concept but not really in actuality. A few of the songs that narratively lean into the creepy feeling are cool
Fav song: Frankie Teardrop or Cheree
Yes
3/5
Actually much cooler than I expected, I still don't really expect to return to it but was enjoyable for sure. I would like to listen to an entire album that sounds like the last minute of Heart of the Sunrise. Yes clears Rush for sure
Fav song: South Side of the Sky
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
Listen man I wanted to hate it and fully expected to but I just can't. I don't think it's necessarily the best album ever made and there are definitely moments where it veers into the preachy self-important corniness that I was expecting but the whole album is much more musical and spontaneously creative than I expected. I thought it would feel very contrived and try-hard but it did not to me.
Fav song: Wesley's Theory
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
Not particularly engaging for me though I like this style of music in general
Fav song: Monday Monday prob
Nirvana
3/5
Said something different at first but I think what I am trying to say is this. There are moments on this album that feel completely gravity defying and like moments of actual creative epiphany (main riff in In Bloom, the chug of the verses in On a Plain, Territorial Pissings, ) but other songs (Lithium, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are) feel melodically more like jingles or ringtones than songs to me. Whether or not this is Nirvana's fault is up for debate because I think it's inarguable that their style was subsumed by lesser songwriters and, over the course of many years, this caused what was a pretty interesting sound to end up sounding quite watered down. It has aged poorly in other words. I can't really blame them for this but I do think whether or not Soundgarden ever wrote Black Hole Sun I would have found Come As You Are irritating and melodically flat. For the most part though this ranges from bearable to quite impressive even despite the zeitgeist flattening it so can't give them lower than a 3 for this even if I am probably not going to purposefully revisit many songs! Would rather listen to Pixies or Melvins or many other comparable bands tho
Fav song: Endless, Nameless
Billy Joel
2/5
Thought I would hate it then thought I would love it based on the strength of the first song but did not love it. Just felt very overproduced and shiny for no reason. I was actually surprised at how well written most of the songs were but I just really didnt enjoy the production
Fav song: Movin Out
Teenage Fanclub
4/5
Fav song: The Concept
Travis
2/5
we have radiohead at home
Fav song: As You Are

Fav song: Pearl of the Quarter
M.I.A.
3/5
Interesting stuff, I find the bedroom sound charming and I appreciate the fact that a lot of the melodies are very uhhh DIY for lack of a better way of putting it but occasionally the songs end up not really having a lot going on in terms of composition and feel like maybe they would be better turned into video game soundtrack bits or like background msuic for a kids TV show?
they can never make me hate MIA tho since she made teqkilla which is probably the best song ever
Fav sonG: Galang
David Bowie
1/5
Absolute fucking trash.
Fav song: Dollar Days I guess, I refuse to relisten to check what my favorite is
Sonic Youth
4/5

Fav song: Bughouse
Brian Eno
4/5
pretty fucking amazing for me and feels like something that could get up to a 5 as i listen to it more
Fav song: The Big Ship
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Enjoyed it quite a bit though a few of the sounds have unfortunately aged quite poorly, the kitschiness could definitely be seen as part of the charm but I found it kinda ruining my experience at times when he would break out the blue man group aahh drums. Still very nice and I could see it growing on me!
Fav song: Don't Give Up not just cuz Kate but also bc it's quite beautiful but otherwise This is the Picture which is super interesting and actually reminds me of Hounds of Love a lot
Tricky
2/5
We have massive attack at home
Fav song: Overcome

annie lennox has a cool voice, the title track is annoying as fuck, i liked the one part where it sounded like cocteau twins, high 2 low 3
Fav song: Jennifer or Love is a Stranger
Sonic Youth
3/5
I preferred dirty, felt like the whole " i am cool and live in nyc and smoke cigarettes" vibe was much more palpable on this one for me
Fav song: Titanium Expose
Steely Dan

Amazing chords esp in the verses, most songs are quite super delightful, turns out my dad was onto something with these mfs
Fav song: Midnite Cruiser maybe?

Fav song: I Don't Want to Know
Justin Timberlake
3/5
high 3 low 4, lost me a bit near the end there but some MASSIVE bangers on here, unreal prod
Fav song: Senorita
Iron Maiden
2/5
Not great but ultimately much more fun and less annoying than I expected, high 2 low 3
Fav song: Phantom of the Opera
The Replacements
3/5
I like some of the replacements' songs, but what the hell do they know about the beatles?
Fav song: Unsatisfied
The White Stripes
2/5
the same 2 or 3 songs repeated for an entire album that is twice as long as it should be, just make it all dead leaves/little room style rough garage rock, make a separate piano rock album and call it a day
Fav song: Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground probably because the riff is insanely gfood
Motörhead
2/5
chud soundtrack, i don't want to be that guy that hates "fun" music but it just isn't fun to me, i fw Thin Lizzy and other similar bands that are interested in the basic principles of pop songwriting but this chug chug roast beef sandwich music just doesn't do it for me
Fav song: (We Are) The Road Crew
Turbonegro
2/5
i am not a hater of fun music in fact i think i am more pro-fun than your average bear but this is "fun" by way of being loud and saying sex words, cant help but think the entire time that i wish i was listening to The Darkness
Fav song: Prince of the Rodeo if we count bonus tracks, Humiliation Street if not
Air
4/5
very awesome
Fav song: Ce matin-la
James Taylor
3/5
the folk pop songs are actually mega incredibly delightful but the acoustic blues stuff is not for me, so this album is like 50% pure joy 50% blah for me but the blah is still fine so 3/5 seems fine
Fav song: Sweet Baby James or Suite for 20 G
Jacques Brel
4/5
Just purely epic and awesome bro literally sounds like he is in the studio while performing live its amazing
Fav song: Les jardins du casino
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
much less freak than i expected and i felt the freaking going on in the pop songs was very bearable and often did not take away from the songs, kinda cool to think about this coming out in 66. i do feel like zappa's tendency towards being epic and random kazoo for the lolz pancake bacon swag can be kinda annoying but im glad they mostly kept that bullshit to the last few songs and particularly the final song which didnt really detract from the album that much to me though i was not happy to have to listen to it
Fav song: Anyway the Wind Blows
Franz Ferdinand
2/5
Just utterly pointless
Fav track: Take Me Out I guess
Tears For Fears
4/5
Yeah the sounds are very "of the times" but the songwriting is insane, just crazy momentum throughout the whole thing with no boring moments or bad ideas honestly, I am pretty blown away by how much I enjoyed this, I actually liked every song wtf I always thought Shout was by Depeche Mode also, like 4.5/5
Fav song: Not sure honestly, but maybe Listen?
Sepultura
3/5
faces the same issue i see with a lot of metal albums where it is combining itself with a different type of music that sounds very cool in theory but ends up being very incongruous or just like an album with songs of two different genres rather than an album that actually combines the two styles on individual songs, for instance a song like Itsari is really cool but i would love for there to be more thrash/groove songs that combine typical metal sounds with more of the tribal stuff from Itsari so you are getting both at the same time, as it stands i still enjoy it but also it is so LONG bro, 40 mins wouldve been fine lol. Canyon Jam is cool
Fav song: Born Stubborn
Arcade Fire
2/5
a few things:
1. i bought this album on release day on vinyl when i was 13
2. i am very interested in the idea of art about the suburbs as a concept and i think there is even good indie rock music about it (real estate) but this shit fucking sucks and doesnt capture the lazy, time stretch feeling of suburbia at all to me
3. has this paper thin veneer of artiness that is incredibly irritating
4. there are, admittedly, a few tunes on here that are pretty undeniable
5. it is almost completely devoid of emotion, sprawl I very nearly expresses SOMETHING but most of the songs are just nothing
6. cant stop thinking about the fact that the guy is a creep which shouldnt impact the music but for me it does
Fav song: Sprawl II
Adam & The Ants
1/5
just ruined my fucking day
Fav song: Feed Me to the Lions
The xx
3/5
actually liked it A LOT better than the first xx album, they actually wrote songs and used dynamic shifts here lol
Fav song: Lips maybe?
Steve Winwood
3/5
not bad at all IMO many forgettable songs but they were still pleasant enough and when the songs are good i really enjoy it, it feels like the outdated sounds should be much more grating than they actually end up being
Fav song: While You See a Chance or Second-Hand Woman
Alanis Morissette
3/5
interesting to me, i kinda hate her voice yet its also what makes her such a charismatic performer so i am a bit split on it. she definitely gives her all on every song which is very charming, many of the songs dont hit for me but when they hit they hit quite hard so idk, low 3 fa me
Fav song: Head Over Feet
Anita Baker
3/5
Pretty much every song is good though none of it is GREAT
Fav song: Caught Up in the Rapture maybe?
Sigur Rós
3/5
Not sure I ever actually listened to this back in the day, maybe I did but I can't remember. Very pretty but sorta feels like it's trying to beat you over the head with its prettiness at the expense of actually being interesting
Fav song: Svefn-g-englar
The Doors
3/5
Started off absolutely hating it but then the second half actually got super interesting, the blues rock stuff sucks hard for me but then it randomly becomes kinda abstract art rock and i quite enjoy it
Fav song: Blue Sunday or Indian Summer
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
kinda interesting i guess
Fav song: Sleeping Gas
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
very pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed it, the songs that have been ground to dust by cultural memification get on my nerves but the non-singles were actaully amazing!! and even though elements of it are outdated, there are some surprisingly in-depth and unexpected songwriting choices
3.6/5 or so
Fav song: All Through the Night
N.W.A.
2/5
i like: some of the drums, the fact that they hate the police
i dislike: most of it
Fav song: Fuck Tha Police probably
Cat Stevens
3/5
another 3 for the road, the HITS are incredible but the rest are kinda blah
Fav song: Where Do the Children Play?
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
each song is just pick some new drums with a very slightly changed pattern, pick a new synth sound to write 2 or 3 melodies with, then alternate between those melodies. but at the same time it is kinda fun so i don't hate it? i just felt myself really wanting each song to have more personality like early Prodigy tracks do. but it was still FINE
Fav song: Elektrobank
Queen
4/5
enjoyed it WAY more than i expected to, high 3 low 4 but i'll leave it as 4 for now
Fav song: Killer Queen (amazing)

Fav song: Send My Love
Cowboy Junkies
3/5
listened to this a while ago (2020) and expected to love it but didn't. lsitened again today and still didn't love it. it's totally fine and of course the concept of stretching out and melting country music is a very nice one but just doesnt hit for whatever reason
Fav song: Blue Moon Revisited
Fiona Apple

It's interesting that unknown pleasures has the famous album cover when arguably this one has a much nicer one. never been a big post punk guy
Fav song: Decades
The Young Rascals
2/5
Some completely nice and enjoyable songs here and there but lack of any sense of identity makes it very forgettable, high 2
Fav song: Place in the Sun
Skepta

every song is amazing, the spoken word interludes are hilarious (unintentionally so but still), 4.5
Fav song: That's Not Me or Shutdown or Text Me Back or Lyrics or

Fav song: Witches Song
Fela Kuti
5/5
doesnt get much better than this
Fav song: Zombie
The Verve
3/5
Honestly more interesting than I expected but doesn't really amount to more than watered down Spiritualized for me. Bittersweet Symphony apparently is well-loved online which I don't understand at all and it is one of the worst songs here for me
Fav song: The Rolling People
Johnny Cash
4/5
Very good and tragic album which has the feel of being recorded under tragic circumstances which lends it a bit of an odd feeling and makes listening to it kinda meta in a way
Fav song: Bridge Over Troubled Water (!!!)

Fav song: Mr. Good Bar (interesting beat, strange lyrics)
Tim Buckley
2/5
Just a bunch of bullshit in an album
Fav song: Sweet Surrender
Led Zeppelin
3/5
sometimes i just wish led zeppelin was a doom metal band and it's weird because at times they actually almost are, when they REALLY stretch out the blues it sounds cool as fuck but sometimes they get distracted by playing guitar solos or whatever and trying to impress the 14 year old girls they wanted to groom, overall as i get older led zep kinda is horseshoe-ing back into being cool in my mind but only like half the time anyways have a nice day yall
Fav song: Dazed and Confused (main part is insanely heavy)
