Album Summary

...The Dandy Warhols Come Down is the second studio album by American rock band The Dandy Warhols. It was released on July 15, 1997, by Capitol. Three singles were released from the album: "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth", "Every Day Should Be a Holiday" and "Boys Better". This is the final studio album to feature drummer Eric Hedford, who quit the band during the tour, and was replaced with Taylor-Taylor's cousin Brent DeBoer. The album featured a shift in style from the garage rock influenced sound of their previous album, 1995's Dandys Rule OK, to a more and pop-influenced sound. Taylor compared the track "Good Morning" to the style of musician Lloyd Cole.

Everyone should go see the documentary Dig! (and yes by go see i mean find away to see this documentary, while it's about The Brian Jonestown Massacre it's also kind of about The Dandy Warhols) I also really miss the era of music where everyone was open about their heroin use. There is something special about a junky making music. In this case it's actually about the junkies that were in The Brian Jonestown Massacre, but it's almost like you cannot separate these two star crossed lovers. "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth". The best song on the album is Boys Better.

Good album

A band I know the singles of. It wasn’t really into them at the time. Thought this started pretty well but it didn’t hold my interest as it was way too long for what it was! You could literally cut this in half and it would be a better album.

Kinda cool. This is absolutely the kind of stuff that would pass me by very easily. I have much more appreciation for this band after watching 'dig' (hugely recommended insane documentary). I can appreciate the unique songwriting voice and some of the psychedelic ambitions. I always struggle a bit with this jangly 90s wall of sound indie rock thing though

Aw man my 60s beat music has been rehashed so much it has turned into grey sludge.

The first half was great and I was going to a it to my liked list but then the second half (especially the last three songs) occurred and sours the whole experience.

I knew this band by name only. But after three lessons, I really love their sound and their vibe. Some of their lyrics get a bit repetitive and leave a little something to be desired. But some of the songs are very cool. There’s some 4+ star potential in here, but overall this is a high 3+.

Like most of the NME/Melody Maker approved British indie rock of their era, the Dandy Warhols are about 80% of the way to being the Beirut's indie rock of the era that I actually like. Too bad that last 20% might be the most important! Also like too many albums of the era, it probably would have been twice as good if it were half as long. As it is, I'd rather just listen to Spacemen 3's Sound of Confusion

A group ive never heard of, lets go Be-In was a vibe, good start Boys Better, ok didnt care at first but this is a pretty righteous sound they got going on. I love you!!!!!! This song slaps Good Morning!!!!! Fire, I enjoyed this, never would have heard this outside of this challenge

My kind of shit

Aika meh. Ei ollut mitenkään mieleenpainuvaa musiikkia. Yksikään kappale ei säväyttänyt ja jossain vaiheessa jäi taustamusiikiksi töissä.

Trim the fat a bit and this is a 5. Great debut album.

listened to one of the tracks, was eh

Can't go wrong with Britpop

Great tunes for biking along the KATY trail!

I was surprised by this album. Some really good stoner rock which also sounds like it should be Britpop. The album is about 15 mins too long though. I wouldn't listen to all the album again but lots of tracks.

Review - not very good. A strange mix of the worse psychedelic parts of early Smashing Pumpkins, and passable to good alt rock. Score - 4.5/10 Need to listen? NO

Good album but there wer emany band doing simliar stuff at the same time even better

After watching dig, the documentary, I was a little familiar with this band. An ok 90s psychedelic band that should have stuck to alternative pop music

Very interesting album that does a unique job of blending lighter alternative rock with My Bloody Valentine-esque distortion to create an almost mainstream shoegaze sound. Gets a little stale at moments and could probably be shorter, but a solid listen overall. Especially shines in the lesser known songs. Top tracks: Be-In, Orange, Whipping Tree

Does this album indulge in attempts at atmospheric noise and vibe breaks? Yes, absolutely and it almost ruins the whole record. Does this album have this bizarre, charming crapness to it that keeps telling me to listen more? Oh, absolutely. Boys Better, Minnesoter, Not Even If You Were The Last Junkie, Hard On For Jesus. There's plenty of tracks that bring this cool as fuck energy that's nostalgic but fresh. It sounds like the seeds that so many 2000s alt sprouted from. Then there's the drawn out, much less lively tracks like Orange and I Love You that simply weren't doing the do for me. This album gets a four because I'm 100% certain I'll be digging deeper into the Dandy Warhols, but I'm not surprised the average verges on a low three.

This was awesome. I'm all in on 90's psych-rock

Worst band name of all time aside, this is really good. This is a brian jonestown massacre household so i know i'm supposed to resent the Dandys but this album is a really incredible flex and showcase of what the psych revival movement was up to in the late 90s. Great hooks, amazing tones. Watch Dig! Don't watch the 2024 version Dig Xx

It was alright, but I wanted to like it more than I did

What a fun! Very good!! I had a great time hearing this album!

A lot of reviews on here (mine included) start with "I wanted to like this..." I didn't particularly want to like this, and turns out I didn't. I very much enjoyed the documentary Dig! but the good thing about that movie is that not liking the Dandy Warhols pretty much helped in enjoying it. They make some good sounds, but this is like ultimate 90s hipsters and the weird thing is I was around a lot of hipsters in the 90s and not one of them ever mentioned the Dandy Warhols.

I've never listened to this band. They sound 100% exactly like I imagined they would sound like based on their name. This is perfectly fine rock music.

I expected this album to be overlong, and it lived up to my expectations. To be fair, my knowledge of the Dandy Warhols is limited. Prior to the great 2004 doc Dig!, I don't think I'd given them any thought—and I didn't have positive ones about Courtney Taylor after that film. But I liked this more than I expected, even if I'm unlikely to come back to it. Their hit never did much for me, but I like "Boys Better" and "Every Day Should Be a Holiday." And the lines "I'd rather be cool than smart" and "I'd rather be cool than loved" in "Cool as Kim Deal" are possibly the most Gen X lyrics ever written, in a song with a title that couldn't be more '90s coded.

Prettt good album that gets worse toward the end (2 long and meh instrumental tracks)

Very pleasantly surprised

Feels like a pretty unique style and blend of influences. No major feelings about this one but definitely have a stronger appreciation for The Dandy Warhol's than I had before.

I've heard the song Bohemian Like You dozens of time, but that's about the full extent of my experience with the Dandy Warhols. I had no idea the they were an American band; I would have put money down on them being from the UK as a lot of this kind of sounds like britpop, but more psychedelic. And I am sure that statement will piss someone off, either a britpop fan or a Dandy Warhols fan, both thinking "this sounds nothing like britpop! How dare you compare this to britpop!?" I digress, I actually quite enjoyed this album. This is going to be a bit contradictory, but I absolutely love the psychedelic, droning breakdowns and I want them to go on forever, but that being said the whole album does go on a bit too long.

airport ambiance? but psychadelic? sure?

I don’t know if it was my mood or what. I swear I have liked the Dandy Warhols before, but I didn’t really enjoy much of anything about this. It was too long and the best way I can describe it is twingy. 2/5

The Dandy Warhols, like their rivals in Brian Jonestown Massacre, are very hit-or-miss. Brilliant tunes are buried between droning, two-chord, psychedelic soundscapes. Worth a listen, but not a must.

What is the world coming to when I rate The Dandy Warhols higher than Doug?!?!

Reminds me a lot of Oasis, which means it reminds me a lot of the Wish.com version of the Beatles. Jangly guitars, potentially interesting chord progressions ruined by being played a few hundred times with no variations, the whole bit. Not for me.

This was a weird and cool album. I didn't know what to expect going in. It was quite enjoyable

This slapped, what a gem! Its like almost a 5 for me, idk whats holding me back... But I feel as though its not quite there for it to be a perfect album. Really surprised me though, super 90s, super great vocals, with even some psychedelicness feel to it all. Loved the moments where they got a bit noisy and weird. Also some really clever and funny lyrics in here such as in Hard on for Jesus. Will definitely be keeping this one in the rotation going forward. 8.5/10

Great album. First listen!

Did not have the Dandy Warhols on my radar, this was a welcome surprise. Good album!

Pleasant and infectious power pop...

Cool vibe, but mostly missing the great songwriting. but Last Junkie is a banger

very dandy, very cool

Liked this a lot, ended up listening twice!

this album is carried by a handful of bangers

I listened to this album for the first time today. It opens with a seven-minute, hypnotic song titled "Be-In." It is built upon a repetitive, droning wall of guitar sound and a sluggish, almost ritualistic rhythm, giving the track a dense, psychedelic atmosphere. The title "Be-In" is also a direct reference to the "Human Be-Ins" of the 1960s hippie movement; by the time you make it through the song, that’s exactly how you feel. An amazing opener! "Boys Better" is equally hypnotic, though in a different way. It features a driving post-punk and alternative rock rhythm, distinguished by a punchy, fuzzy bassline, dynamic tempo shifts in the chorus, and a heavily distorted guitar sound. What follows is a style that is hard to pin down, though the fuzzy guitar and general psychedelic mood remain constant. On "Orange," the notes emanating from my floor-standing speakers sound like a mantra—calm and endlessly repeating. It is hard not to get drawn in by the sound. The breakout hit "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," on the other hand, has an almost playful, bouncy rhythm and sounds completely different from the rest of the album so far. Yet, the lyrics tell the grim story of the singer's girlfriend, who has become a drug addict. Ultimately, however, the vast majority of the songs possess a dark, atmospheric quality that I would compare to the psychedelic experiments of the early Velvet Underground. In summary, I have to admit that I had completely overlooked this band. I really enjoy this indie record with its diverse range of styles; they draw from psychedelic and space rock as well as shoegaze and dream pop, all topped off with a generous dash of garage rock and a "wall of sound" created by synthesizers, bass, and guitars. Simply amazing—sometimes truly epic! It features some great walls of feedback, but also rhythmic loops. A consistently good and interesting album. I’m going to check this band out further.

Why is this album one of the 1001 I need to listen to before I die? There are a few tunes trying to escape but they are trapped by dirgy jamming(?) over the top. Genuinely unsure.

on in the background at Pdubstep's. every time I paid attention of sounded like the worst bits of the Stone Roses and Primal Scream or an actual dirge. sounds like stoned college kids jamming. should listen again to inform my review but I don't want to. 1.5*

Just fine.

Oh man, I owned this record in 97 and remember liking it. But I haven’t heard it in probably 25 years. Let’s see how it’s aged for me… The good parts are really good. The whole record is a spacey wall of sound, and when it works, it works pretty well. Parts of it are way longer than they really need to be, and some songs really drag. I think I would love this record if it was edited down, but as it is, it almost reaches four stars, but not quite there. 7.8/10

Great album overall. I thought The Dandy Warhols were closer to an 80's band though, so it's word to me that they're firmly mid 90's. I think the album is a bit overlong with too much shoe gaze noise, especially near the end though.

sounds like fun a band to see live. 3.5

I was about to give this a two and then the last couple of tracks actively pissed me off, what a waste of time.

Too drone-ny for me. I need some variance in my songs. Give me a guitar riff, a bridge, a tempo change. Just felt very samesy within each song. Not bad but too one dimensional. 2.5 out of 5.

I have listened to 13 tales of urban bohemia several times before, but I only vaguely remember some of the songs of this album, and after listening to this album, I really enjoyed it. This is the perfect blend of 60s psychadelia and 90s alternative rock.

Ek het weirdly rerig van hierdie gehou. Dis iets anders nie heeltemal vyf sterre nie maar dis close

an awesome laid back yet still upbeat album. Used to listen to this a lot in the early 00's in my car on my way to see my GF for the weekend.

First listen Saved 3/14 Top track: Be-In

echt leuke nummers, maar ook echt doodoo nummers

너무 즐거워요

Really enjoyed this one! I liked how the album slowed down and became increasingly mellow and atmospheric. I haven’t listened to this band before but I am going to add them to my rotation!

It was ok? Hard for it to come out of the background for me and it was fine in that setting, but I’m sure I will have forgotten about it tomorrow. Nothing really stood out, an ok 90s vibe I suppose.

Weird, but good weird

Not absolutely terrible but it does feel charitable giving it a 2

It's okay, but really just didn't grab me with anything. Too shoe-gazey for my taste.

the Dandy Warhols are the type of group that you easily dismiss by their stupid name, but when you give them a try, you realize how good they are Spacey, grungy, psychedelic, what i like

Me gustó la actitud rebelde y despreocupada que transmite el álbum, lleno de canciones psicodelicas pero con un filtro popero que los asemeja a bandas como The Verve, con letras sobre el consumo de drogas y otros tópicos Dandys.

An enjoyable if somewhat unforgettable bit of late nineties jangly alt rock

There were some bright spots, but most of it was same-tempo satisfactory.

Damn good album! I wasn’t familiar with them at all, other than their name, but I will definitely listen to this one again and check out more of their work!

Good first half slower second. Low 3

This felt unexpected as I had never heard of them before, but this absolutely my wheelhouse. It had such a interesting mix of songs that all felt unique and I really liked my listen through.

Really enjoyable rock album. Had it's own unique sound and a good variation of songs. It feels like a hidden gem.

The Dandy Warhols are probably best known for their infuriatingly ubiquitous ear worm of a hit Bohemian Like You, but fortunately this album from 1997 is a different kettle of fish. Much more towards the psychedelic stoner rock end of the spectrum than I was expecting, I enjoyed it rather a lot. Top marks also for the song Cool as Kim Deal which I can relate too. I’m something of a Johnny come lately Pixies fan since starting listening to this list and it’s nice to hear that the Dandies are too.

Favorite Track: Minnesoter

Alternative rock, power pop, space rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock.

A lot of this had a dream-like sound that was okay to have playing in the background. There were some moments where things moved away from this to be more high energy - those moments caught my ear. Unfortunately, those parts didn't stick around for too long.

Another mostly forgettable ‘90s one-sortahit-wonder that must be here because the British editor has a soft spot for wannabe British bands. I don’t even really dislike this, it’s just that as I near the end of the list, things like this feel extra annoying.

this had some bops on it

Electronica / alt rock

Bit boring really, a poor man’s BJM. They’ve got a cool sound n all but just not really, the best? 2.5/5.0 Best Song: Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth

Really shite, it did absolutely nothing for me, at its best it was annoying at its worst i wanted to turn it off. Do not like his voice at all

I went to college with a The Dandy Warhols superfan, possibly their only one. He introduced the entire music class to their music. I took him seriously and never looked back. This album, along with many of their others, is a banger.

Wow, finally an album that I enjoyed from beginning to end! What you've delivered here on "Come Down" is fresh and full of energy. I absolutely love the psychedelic touch. This album was definitely worth it for me. I'll certainly listen to the other albums by "Dandy Warhols" as well. This album definitely deserves 5 stars.

5/10 - Starts off well but then becomes noise

I had to listen to this whole thing and Bohemian Like You isn't even on it.

in the war between the dandy warhols and brian jonestown massacre i am firmly on the side of the dandy warhols

was alright, pretty funky, creepy at times, 3.5 but i'm being generous

1) Orange 2) Every Day Should Be A Holiday 3) Whipping Tree Least Favourite: None of em!
