Reviews (page 3 of 7)
The first few tracks really won me over. Somewhere in the middle it kind of lost its grip on me, but turned it back around in the end.
Somehow, I missed this when it was new. It's very much of its time, but that was kinda my time, so I dig it. And mixed in with that are tabs amounts of Neal Young, which is also up my alley. And psychedelia! And Galaxie 500-ish sounds! So where was I in '97?
This will be a short review because my head is a bit mushed today. I think I’ve heard the Dandy Warhols before, and I think I really liked them. Today’s album is really good too. It’s a bit trippy, but is fun rock music on the lighter side. It was good to have on while working.
I like it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. The first track, "Be-In" is the absolute definition of how you should start an album. One thing I noticed early on that I appreciate is that they don't rush to get to the chorus and take their time and build each song. There are moments that I could take or leave, especially the track "Pete international Airport." However, the infectious grooves and catchy guitar won me over. 4.5.
I used to think of this band as middle-of-the-road alt-rock, especially since their hits gave off that vibe. Back when this was released, I didn’t fully appreciate the neo-psychedelia sound. But revisiting it now, the deeper cuts really stand out. It was a pleasant surprise, so I’m bumping my rating up from a 3 to a 4.
Top to bottom a pretty strong album of indie/alternative. DW had a definitive sound which risks getting repetitive but instead keeps a flow across tracks. Super listenable straight through.
I thought this band was so cool in 97. Some great tracks on this like Boys Better, Junkie, and Holiday. I don't remember the spacey instrumentals but over all this lives up to my memories of it.
I had this CD in high school/college and I played it a lot. And the reason I played it a lot is because it's really good. It's been a few years since I listened to it all the way through, which is a shame. Is it a 5 star? No, not quite, but it's pretty close.
When I heard the first song, I immediately thought this was Britpop and I had an instant pavlovian response of giving this 1 star. However, once I got past the first song (which was pretty bad), the rest of the album fucking rocked. This really does sound like the American version of Britpop, but in a good way. There are plenty of weird songs on here (like I Love You, wtf was that about), but then they crawl it back with absolute bangers like Last Junkie On Earth, which was both funny and interesting. Nothing really blew me away here, but I definitely enjoyed this one and there's plenty of songs I'll be coming back to.
Not much to say, a pleasant listen and a pleasant surprise, was not expecting a band with such a shit name to make such decent music Didn't adore many of the tracks but they were all alright to good Barely scrapes into a 4 7/10 Fav tracks - Be-in, Orange, I Love You, Good Morning
Heard of them but somehow missed this Portland band in the mid to late 90’s.
Forgot about these guys until now, has held up well, really enjoyed it.
Super pleasant surprise
some solid late 90s rock music that is totally bogged down by impressively long and vacant noise tracks. there is some pretty decent stuff on here that is not quite memorable, but will be overshadowed in my mind by having to listen to long stretches of shoegaze noise. if the noise had been trimmed a little bit to cut the length of the album down, this would've gone up a bit more in my esteem.
Never really given the dandy warhols a chance and now I have no idea why. Loved this and right in my wheelhouse. Came close to 5 but flagged a little bit mid album
The instrumental parts at the beginning and end are pretty boring, but the rest is quite good. 4 stars or B-.
The Danny Warhol‘s hit it big for three reasons. The first was the introduction of social media, particularly Napster allowing them a way to get their music out there when normally they would’ve just been stuck in small club circuits. The second was the notorious movie Dig following the careers of the Dandy Warhals and the Brian Jonestown Massacre in the early days looking at the contradictions of their success and failures. And the third: the music is just really good. I forgot how good this album is. I don’t remember hearing of The Dandy Warhols until at least late 1990s. This early work is an excellent example of the development of Indie rock in the United States. He songs for me we’re Better Boys and Every Day Should Be a Holiday. I need to pull the CD out and listen to it more often. It slaps!
Like these guys a lot more than expected. Excellent 80s vibe.
A very good DW album, not too keen on the britpop influences and probably like the two albums after this one a bit more.
I figured this would be awful, based on the one big hit that is my only reference for the Dandy Warhols. But it turns out that this was actually right up my street and I didn't hate it in the slightest. Definitely the pop-end of Shoegaze, but it was experimental enough to keep my interest from start to finish. I can't bring myself to award the full five stars, so four stars it is.
Heavy turn of the millennium nostalgia vibes for me on this. Probably makes me like it more than I would otherwise. Nice record to blast first thing in the morning.
Oh yes. A thousand times yes.
this bangs, unexpectedly
I wish bohemian like you was on this album 😢. Still rlly good tho I like it.
I really enjoyed this one. Not sure how they escaped my attention till now, will definitely be looking through their work.
This would be easy to dismiss as meh guitar pop but it way better rgab that. Songwriting, production and invention are pretty outstanding. Take a 4 you gorgeous bastard.
Very 90s. 5 stars if you're looking for 90s. I certainly enjoyed it more as it went on; which does correlate to amount of whiskey consumed. But correlation does not equal causation & Pete International Airport was killer so 4 stars
Enjoyed this a lot. Although not a big fan of shoegaze, this had a bunch of other things mixed into it, which was good. "I Love You," however, could have been cut. WAY too repetitive and drone-y. The instrumental at the end, "The Creep Out" was sufficiently creepy. Thought it was effective. Lots of good stuff here, really enjoyed it. I had heard of the DW, but had never listened to them. May have to change. Top tracks: "Boys Better," "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth," "The Creep-Out"
A bit derivative, but fun to listen to. Cool to see that they opened for Bowie on his Reality tour. Favorite tracks: Be-In, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Every Day Should Be a Holiday.
One of my all time favorites to come out of the mini mod scene in the 90s. A little filler but mostly killer. Great for a nice drive.
Already heard. Atmospheric, sometimes funny, edgy punkish-pop/rock
Solid alt rock. I liked the steady tempo build they had going on. I don't think I'd what to see them live, but a good album to play at home alone.
This is an album in two modes. In its first mode, it's superb 90's power pop. Incredibly hooky with an infectious, driving energy. It's really as Pitchfork put it: it's one of the best Britpop albums I've heard, and it isn't even British. Seriously, it ranks right up there with the best stuff I've heard from blur, Oasis, and at least some of the dozen random Britpop acts this list has given up. All it's missing is a snotty, Cockney accent—though I imagine some people are pretty thankful it's nowhere to be found. In its other mode, it's space rock. Now, I haven't heard very much space rock. There's the stuff in Pink Floyd's early catalog that could be called such, and that's really about it. So, getting to hear a 90's take on this genre... Gosh, I'm floating. It's such a good sonic soundscape. I can just picture being at the helm of a spaceship, lazily drifting among the stars through the cosmos. Seriously, any song on this album, not just the space rock half, could have been on a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Awesome Mix, as far as I'm concerned. If I hadda pick one mode I liked better... I believe I'd pick the space rock mode? Largely 'coz it's stuff I haven't heard before. As good as the power pop stuff is, I honestly couldn't shake the feeling that it all sounded like some other band I'd heard before, and I could never exactly place my finger on it. On top of that—and I might be speaking more about my preference for album length than I am CD bloat—I'm not sure if this really needed to be 66 minutes. Somewhere in the middle, I kept spacing out (no pun intended). Now, normally I'd chalk that sort of thing up to my attention span and not dock the album any points, but I'unno. This is one of those rare times I wanna be kind to an album, but combined with the remark about feeling like I'd heard some of this stuff before from others... Yeah. O course, it's still ultimately a 4 out of 5, and a heavy recommendation from me. The space rock stuff and the power pop I didn't space out on are too good to give it anything less, I figure. Like, it wasn't terribly consistent, but on the whole I'd still say I had a great time coming down with the Dandy Warhols. From where or what, I'm not sure, but, hey, it's the climb and all that...
I dig this one, even if its just a bit of generic 90s alt rock. 3.5 bumped up to 4.
I’m at a 3.5 that I’ll bump up to a 4. It’s a solid album. It’s certainly worth being on the list. It’s just not a great album experience, or at least one that’s not as cohesive as it could’ve been. This album has two distinct issues for me – they’re not big issues, but they’re enough to really mess with the flow of the album. The first involves the pacing – some of these tracks wander on a bit too long in their instrumentals, and they sort of dissipate the vocal moments in favor of letting the instrumentals shine. It’s not a bad approach, but it makes the album run much longer than it needs to. This is 66 minutes that could’ve been trimmed down. The other issue is simply finding a more proper balance between vocal presence and the instrumentals themselves – there are really good tracks here, but some of them have the vocals get drowned out by the instrumentals so much that the vocals don’t have any presence on them, or at least, not as much as they should. When this album finds the right balance between the two (see: I Love You & Whipping Tree), it hits really well and completely nails what it’s going for. It just doesn’t strike on it as much as I’d like. Regardless, I still thought this was pretty good – there’s a few tracks that aren’t as captivating as others, but this is just a really good blend of a lot of 90s stuff – sort of a “Pearl Jam meets indie rock” with a bit of Britpop influence as well. It’s a strong album, but it’s dragged down by its track length, its pacing, and arguably its track order – closing out on 15 minutes of instrumentals without one big encore payoff is a little too bold for my tastes. There’s a few tracks that feel too similar, too close to one another. Either way, I liked it. It’s a 3.5 that I’ll bump up to a 4 because I enjoyed it enough.
Didn’t know what to expect and was very happy. Great album. 8/10
Atmospheric, sometimes funny, edgy punkish-pop/rock
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would!
Moody, doomy, compelling.
it fit my mood
It's really tame, but I can live with it.
I kinda liked it but got kinda tiresome at the end. Minnesoter was my favorite. Maybe 3.7
I liked this album but I grew a bit tired at the end. Minnesoter and Not if you were the last junkie on earth were my favorite
An artifact of its time, but it's good memories and positive vibes. I'd listen to this again.
This has really surprised me. The only two DW songs I knew were the very overplayed Vodafone advert one, and the excelled We Used To Be Friends. Had low expectations but this is pretty ace. Sounds quite ahead of its time. Sort of merges that UK sounding pysch with garage rock. Some remind me of a proto Django Django. I’m now amazed these arent/werent bigger but then saw they have over 1.5million active monthly listeners so theyre obviously doing something right!
Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth was cracking - love the drums. Keeps on moving. Decent album overall.
Thought I only knew 1 Dandy Warhols tune, I was wrong! Knew a couple on this album too. Thought it was mostly very good. Probably pretty similar to what I would've expected, but not wrong with that. Pretty hipster and artsy. Highlights: Boys better Not if you were the last junkie on earth Everyday should be a holiday
After one listening I feel way much cooler. If it wasn’t for the weird instrumentals, this album would be a 5 but you know…
I really loved this album. I had maybe heard of this band before, but I had definitely never listened to them. The guitar sounds are incredible. With some listens it could honestly be a five for me, but it’ll have to settle for a four for now.
Perhaps an underrated album. This band is certainly polarizing, but I did enjoy it for the most part. 3.5/5
Was expecting Bohemian Like You but was still entertained, they do have something unique to offer in the wash of British bands on this list.
Alternative rock indie. Tranquilo sonoro.
Nice
Where was I that I missed this aural explosion? I’ve definitely heard of The Dandy Warhols before, but I had no clue that they rocked so hard. The joy of this list.
Enjoyed this - atypical of 1997 with interesting lyrics
New favourite Dandy Warhols album
Very cool, laid-back rock album!
Flippant, smart-arsed, sarcastic, swaggering jangly guitar pop that tries unsuccessfully to hide some rather nice musicianship. Mr S loves the guitar work.
Pretty creative and unique 90s Britpop/indie rock. They go out of there way to try and create their own sound and it works.
Decent sound. Would like to listen some more
Interesting psychedelia.
a real a-side/b-side album be-in boys better not if you were the last junkie on earth every day should be a holiday good morning the creep out
Good stuff
4/5
Yeah! This is how a perfect modern stoner rock album should be made!
Meget cool album!
Super fed plade, som lige rammer en lyd jeg godt kan lyde, guitar støj i massere af lag og så bare derudaf.
An angsty slice of indy rock
The Dandy Warhols are still not passe, imo.
8/10.
I really liked the shoegazey songs and the one where they sing a lot I don't care for but they were not annoying to listen to
That was decent!
I enjoyed this album, and I'd listen to it again. It was great to listen to while working, and again while making dinner and cleaning up. The kids didn't object to it. I actually really like the instrumental tracks. It's a good groove, especially in the background. It's never going to achieve sing-along status.
A bit psychedelic, a bit darker here but powerful on other tracks. I enjoyed it after all these years never really getting into these guys.
Nice!
I had never heard of the Dandy Warhols but I like them!
Very well put together, sounds good!
I really like this album. Going in, I didn't really know the Dandy Warhols that much. I was debating between a 4 and 5, but those last two instrumentals were useless to me, so 4 it is. Liked songs added: - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth - Good Morning - Cool As Kim Deal
Kinda vacillates between lazy alt rock and more energetic power pop but it struck a chord with me. No bad tracks and good catchy hooks throughout. Standout is "Every Day Should Be A Holiday". Other good tracks are "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth" as well as "Boys Better".
Brilliantly sloppy. I love the Dandy's and love even more how little they care about being serious. This is a crazy mixed up album of Mercury Rev style drone slapping up against pure pop songs.
B teir. The songs were catchy and the production was good, but it is NOT a good album to listen to while you’re driving. I was falling asleep the songs get monotonous and hypnotic with all the repetitions. Could have crashed. Not good.
Fan va bra, lite lattjo brittiskt som jehova själv
Wow - this album just got removed from the list and that's a damn shame cus this is fun. A few tracks were a bit same-y, but I'm really glad to have listened to this.
Late-90's indie rock, a bit grunge and laid-back, pretty cool. I knew and liked a few of the tracks on this before listening as part of the project, but most of the other tracks hold up as well. A couple of duds, but the intro and outro instrumental tracks, Be-In and The Creep Out are very listenable. One of the best albums so far.
Enjoyed
I've always enjoyed what I've heard of The Dandy Warhols but never really dug into them and found this album quite enjoyable. Psychedelic power shoegaze pop? Faves from this session: Boys Better, Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth and the last two tracks which are the come down of the album. bah dum tiss!
Loved this album, what a treat. Felt like these guys were at every festival I went to in high school but never actually listened to them.
Never heard them before, but I liked it a lot.
Liked it, mor than I thought.
First two songs I loved, the rest was pretty good
Alternative rock indie. Tranquilo sonoro.
I'm always partial to these guys - can't really pick a favourite. And the doco Dig is fantastic
Lovely stuff. Nice wee slice of late 90's indie rock
This is a band I know by name only. Opening track is great! I’m looking forward to this journey. I would have probably hated this album in the 90’s but I love it now. “The creep out” is a great song. This is a great album.
it's all a little samey, but in the comfortable way that it sounds like a complete album to listen to rather than "the songs all sound the same" if that makes sense. the music is exactly as shoegazey as i want my rock before it goes overboard and i just want it to be post rock instrumentals. it perfectly blends a lot of different ideas and ends up unique. it's very good.
Lost my notes! Some of the best alt rock for it's time, except for the fact that OK Computer came out the same year. Hard act to follow.
This is what a Radiohead album would sound like if they actually made good music. Great 90's Brit-rock album.
I’ve long liked their sound and listening to this album was a treat!
I prefer Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia, but I like the Dandy Warhols a lot, so this was a great listen for me today. I love their whole indie, smartass slacker vibe. Good tunes.
The band is great and creative, but the album itself is not that amazing, still decent
Admittedly, this is a really fun album and I felt great after it was finished. Strong Loaded-era Velvet Underground influence here too
I like the vibe.
A crescendo decrescendo album which is great in the middle but I found starts and finishes disappointingly. They are a band that had been one of my top listened to on Spotify in recent years and so this flavours my rating which is generous for how I found the album as a whole
I love me some Dandy Warhols! This is not their best album, but it's got some great tracks (mixed with a few bland ones too!). On the whole I still really enjoyed their sound and I love that this album shows the potential of where their music was headed for. Fave track: Everyday should be a holiday
Good zone out album
A lot of the same type of music but surprisingly didn't get boring. Lovely background music, great to vibe to.
Wow, really enjoyed this! I remember having a few of their singles downloaded on my iPod when I was a teenager, but never listened to any of their albums. I got tired of hearing Bohemian Like You absolutely everywhere, so I think I kinda wrote them off. Was fully expecting this to be a 3 star max. But I've really been missing out! Sure they wear their influences on their sleeves and it runs a bit too long. But there's very little on here I disliked. It's almost like they picked up where the Pixies left off (I like to pretend that they quit after Kim Deal Left), with a healthy dose of shoegaze and Stereolab. I feel like Zach Braff is probably obsessed with this band. That album cover though - hideous. The 2nd half drags a bit, but I could see myself bumping this up to 5 stars with repeated listens.
Alternative rock indie. Tranquilo sonoro.
i quite liked this, more so the end half. i almost skipped it without listening because the band name is …… not appealing. there’s me judging a book by its cover. solid instrumentals , many made me feel like i was in my own late 90s 2000’s movie about my life flipping inside out or life flippin me inside out who knows. the rain sticks?! are u kidding , when was the last time you heard a rain stick in a song. was painting to it. would paint again. downloaded 3,4,6,9,10,11&14. send me to mars orange and the creep out
Very pleasant album, rather calm and easy going. No studs or duds, but every song is slightly above average, at least when compared to usual output of this list. I would be very keen to listen to this record again, this time more carefully, and see if I get a bit more out of that. Until then it's a really solid 4.
Never heard, vibing, mix of ambient and structured
Really good! Enjoyed the more hypnotic trancey tracks to the pop ones.
I really like the Dandy Warhols. Wiki got it right with 'Space Rock' but 'Shoegaze'? I never thought of them like that. The heady days before 'that advert' weirdly propelled them to the mainstream for a brief moment. This was the first album I discovered, due to hearing 'Not if You Were The Last Junkie on Earth', which made me go out and buy this! I remember thinking at the time 'Every Day Should be a Holiday' sounded uncannily like 'Spinning' by Loop, which is no bad thing, it certainly cemented their psychedelic credentials. As for the monster which is 'Good Morning', its such a downer in a good way. Are they cool as Ms Deal? Yeah baby! A low 4
BL: Know nothing of this band except the namesake artist it stems from, so it will be interesting to see what I think of them. AL: A very nice psych-rock album. Lots of rhythms to get into and slowly nod along to, the second half of the album is definitely better than the first half. FT: "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth" 4/5
Fairly pleasant listen
2/21/24. This is up my alley: beautifully weird. A lot of random sounds but creative landscapes, also enjoyed the vocals.
I quite enjoyed this one
Be-in geeft al een Nice intro, goede opbouw van instrumentatie Psych rock
This felt like it was right in my wheelhouse, 90s alternative with driving guitars and great vocals. Started off slowly but built as it went along, I was almost sad when it finished. Standout songs are "Be-In" "Minnesoter", and "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth", but don't sleep on the instrumental "The Creep Out". And I just want a girl as cool as Kim Deal...
4-5
Loved the first half, they lost me a bit in the 2nd half. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that I love “shoegaze” rock
I really, really enjoyed this for the most part. Especially the beginning of the album...it hits the perfect 90s sound that I cannot get enough of. However, the middle of the album then really leans way, way too hard into the lo-fi sound that becomes very hit or miss to me. Then the ending recaptures that feel I really like from the beginning. The drop off is too stark to get the perfect 5 for me, but many tracks from this will happily end up in my rotation
Biting, satirical, nihilist indie pop, at risk of biting the hand that feeds them, The Dandy Warhols want to be cool but not too cool you know? Mood is everything here and they pull it off alongside some entertaining tunes and engaging riffs.
So very 90s rock. Thought it was pretty tame, nothing crazy; enjoyable. 7/10.
A very late 90s sound of rock/punk with emerging Electronica. I'll go a 3.8 on this one.
I was expecting some kind of grungey bullshit, but this was really good. Much more polished, energetic and interesting than expected. Will listen again. 4 stars.
Ok so this is a very 90s thing and it wasnt bad but for some reason it just feels so so.
Me ha sorprendido gratamente, es bastante más contundente de lo que esperaba.
- First half had incredible vibes - Grungy but with lighter guitar - Gets weird (in a good way) towards the end
Overstays its welcome by maybe 3 songs but I really dig this. I’ve also been meaning to watch Dig! for like 20 years.
Never really listened to them when they were new and it's nice to revisit. Very 90's/early 2000's. Sweet spot.
Really enjoyed this
This is more than I listened to them in the entire decade of the 90s! Good sound; not what I remember.
December 10, 2023 Great album, especially in it's time amongst the plethora of grunge/alt-rock clone of clones. Lot of all-timers on this one.
I liked this one a good bit, but I can’t see why it’s so essential that it belongs on this list.
Pretty good album from a band I had heard of, but never listened to.
Pleasantly surprised by how good this album is. The Dandy Warhols were never on my radar and I’d never have listened to them on my own accord. This is why I love this project!
Ooh, these boys threw it all in, didn’t they? This is so good. It's like some of the best Britpop, but made by a group of Americans! So much to enjoy here. Rich, layered arrangements with a strong pop sensibility. Really diverse uses of guitar, jangly and psychedelic, but also surprisingly muscular and dissonant at times. I definitely plan to come back and spend more time with this one. Fave Songs: Good Morning, Whipping Tree, Hard On for Jesus, Pete International Airport, Be-In, Green, Orange, Boys Better
This album sits at the crossroads of neo-psychedelia, shoegaze, Britpop, and college rock. What's interesting is that this is an American band. They completely had me thinking they were a British band by their sound and mix of genres (despite the college rock tinges throughout). Their musical lineage seems to circumvent grunge altogether which is notable for the time. Overall, this was an enjoyable album that featured melodic repetition and slow building songs that still had a pop sensibility.
Ok, absolutely loved the sound here. Everything great about 90s/00s alternative (Spoon, Beck, Eels came to mind throughout) but with their own style. Loved the music, not totally keen on some of the subject material. Much was cleverly written, some mildly offensive. But wow, the music! 3.5 stars leanining to 4
I liked this album, particularly last junkie on earth. I think they have a really good sound and is worth listening to again another time.
Impressions: So this is shoegaze. Interestingly fun. Favorite tracks: Minnesoter, Orange, Good Morning, Rating: 4/5
Went on a bit long (could have done without the last two tracks entirely for me) but otherwise this was a very fun blast through a lot of different alt-rock styles
Enjoyed this much more than I thought I would based on the hipstery name. Especially loved the darker slower grungier tracks like Orange
Pretty chill
Rock alternativo.
Toch 2 nummers dat ik herkende. De rest van het album was ook wel oké
HL: "I Love You", "Junkie", "Good Morning", "Hard On For Jesus" Fine & dandy
I enjoyed this album - I have a soft spot for this type of sound, so I think it will definitely get a few more listens at the very least.
More of this.
When I first saw this album (which I had never heard) on this list instead of 13 Tales from Urban Bohemia, the somewhat higher rated and the one I know from back to front, I ask myself why? Then I put on the opening tracks...nice atmospheric intro maybe a little long, sweet guitar figure, nice sweet toe-tapping rhythm, big crunchy bass and suddenly I'm out of my chair and dancing. Great start better that the start to 13 tales (Godless). As for the rest, pretty consistent album that kept me entertained from start to finish. 4 stars (for the record I would probably give 13 tales 4.5)
Space rock and shoegaze have their own unique and irresistible charm. This album managed to bridge the 2 decade long gap between the two, creating it's own charm in the process.
One admits to a soft spot for the DWs, thanks to the cheeky humor (“heroin is so passe” and “Hard-On for Jesus” and “Cool as Kim Deal”), droning melancholia, and slacker-stoner vibe. All of these elements still sound good here, translating into fairly rich layerings, intermittent just-dark-enough shadings, and the occasional passage that rocks properly. There are just enough arty flourishes – including but not limited to the feedback-y sonic haziness – to keep it interesting, such as the broody-moody closers – the instrumental “Pete International Airport” (another great title!) and “The Creep Out;” the boys knew how to get weird, or least druggily contemplative (though the abrupt cut between the two tracks is unnecessarily juddering). There is, one must note, a non-life-changing undertone to the whole affair, a not-quite-compelling essence, that may be cause and/or effect of their not taking themselves too seriously, a generally laudable attribute of rock records, particularly from the ‘90s. And speaking of, like every other list-making record from that overindulgent era, this one can be credibly called too long (though space for those closers does add depth). Highly rated though on the always important metric of enjoyability. And their anti-grunge stance looks smarter with each passing year.
There's nothing terribly special here but it works, well. Basic power chord progression but with great fuzz/effects and production. I don't understand about 80% but I don't care.
I've actually listened to the Dandys a bit before. Young me was huge into "Veronica Mars" and their excellent "We Used to Be Friends" served as the theme, causing me to dig into their "Welcome to The Monkey House". I never dug too far into their past catalogue, admittedly. This is definitely more of a drugged-out, stoner version of Blur and Oasis, capturing more of the feeling of being high on record than Oasis did. At times it lags, but it always manages to come back up: peaks and valleys, if you will. My bias seeps in a bit, but I enjoyed the drugged psych pop it was. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Minnesoter", "Not If You Were The Last Junkie on Earth", "Cool as Kim Deal"
Much better than expected.
Fantastic. Mizerable but fantastic, good to sit and be moody to
I really got a lot out of this, these guys sounded awesome and had such a distinct and full sound. A real flashback to 1997.
Surprisingly a quite good and enjoyable rock album
Brilliant in places, some filler stops it getting a 5
7/10. Quite good, but started to drag on the back half.
Solid album that flows well.
Surprisingly good.
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Know very little about this band and this is not something I normally would have listened to.
I've never heard of this band before. They have a very interesting sound, kind of reminds me of some psychedelic rock. I really don't dislike it, although it isn't my normal style for sure. It uses some repetitive aspects to the songwriting, but I don't think that's a mistake, it does add to the effect the songs seem to have, it kind of assists in the groove. I really like the use of the synth in a few of the songs. I'm struggling to think of whether this would be something I would just be willing to listen to again, or buy, mostly because it really just isn't my normal style. Due to the songs being catchy enough though, I think I can classify this as an album I would buy.
Klinkt lekkerder dan ik me herinner. Goed album, laatste twee tracks niet.
Another in the long list of music i see as good but really does nothing for me personally. It has song that I can see others being very into its everything i dislike about alot of other artists. Its vapor. Like it has this obscured quality to it. Just like those last few sentences. Its hard to put a finger on it but its just not worth it. The songwriting is behind a wall of sort of interesting sound but only sort of. I could see a song inside these tracks but its hiding. There are lots of songs that dont move in any interesting way either. Those last 2 tracks are the epitome of the uninteresting and repetitive nature im talking about. Its one single musical idea that isnt bad per say but its overdone to the extreme. 8 minutes of even the best ideas payed ad nauseum will always end up bad in the end. And no vocals at all or some garbled incomprehensible voices are hell for me. Ive been very negative this whole time. But I dont hate it. Im just frustrated that there is so much of this lauded and popular music that I can see the appeal and still feel zero for it. I was OK with the length and not looking for it to end but I wasn't loving my time either. All in all im ok with this but just wish I could see the vision. But I dont.
On the one hand, it’s a bit try-hard, but on the other hand that effort did pay off with some decent tunes, so fair play to the Dandy Warhols.
Another wide epic album that sounds like feelings but stayed with me no further than the final reverb tail. Not bad, but not amazing.
Music of this type all sounds very similar to me. Having said that, this was better than most. Would like to give it a high 3.
It was alright, a solid 7/10
Another surprising inclusion. I would have categorized this as a “before they were famous” album, but somehow 3 tracks from this hit the top 40 in the UK. Three! Despite being American, they didn’t gain notoriety in the US until “Bohemian Like You” from Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, which is far more high-energy than most of the tracks on either album. Honestly I’d rate their debut album higher than this one. It’s a lot more hooky and less dated-sounding.
This is interesting. The album gets better as it goes on. Starts out sort of trite and poppy, but then develops a dark and rich vibe — with interesting lyrics. A real mix. I want yo listen to it again, but for now it’s a 3.
Seria um 3.5
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Some of it was just weird.
Standouts Minnesoter Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth
So someone decided we needed American Britpop. It's just like every other Britpop album on here. Ok as background music to slightly annoying.
#222 listening diary -Boys Better Rocks. -issa funny when they say Minneso-TER innit. I do think so. -yee this is chill! -i love you and not if you were... I found a little repetitive, not too engaging. -Cool guitar riff on Everyday Holiday. -it's untelated but I have a headache. -Nobody's as cool as Kim Deal, c'mon. 3.5, could come back to this! It's cool!
not bad but way overstays its welcome
Everything after track 8 just get rid of, but I am a big fan of most of the first half of this album in both its spacier / shoegazier moments and its more POWER POP NOISY GUITAR HOOKS moments. Which I honestly wasn't expecting.
This album is an achievement for sure, really full sound that at times was like a Wall-of-Soundified R.E.M. Really liked Boys Better and Every Day Should be a Holiday, Good Morning. But at the same time, made 1hr feel like much longer and dragged late despite the rich production value. Very interesting album missing something for me.
Dandy ear candy. ★★★
I was more of a Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips guy around the time this came out and there's only so much room one can have in ones heart for American neo-psychedelia. Then Bohemia Like You came out and it was a cool song but was then co-opted by a mobile phone ad in the UK and I quickly became sick of it. So I wasn't super excited to hear this. However, I enjoyed several of the tracks beyond the ones I already knew I can't for the life of me understand why they didn't just end the record with Hard On For Jesus which was great, instead they tack on two long, trippy, not particular interesting freeform jams which don't add anything. I was going for a 4 but the interminable coda bumps it down to a strong 3.
Tämä Dandy Warholsin levy menee samaan kastiin, kuin eilisen Flaming Lips. Kokonaisuus jää reippaasti plussan puolelle, mutta "se jokin" jää uupumaan.
'90s American college rock. Just kind of drifts on by without standing out.
5.5/10
It’s alright
never really gave them a listen. always one of the on the fringe bands but thought this was a good album will try their other albums
Very enjoyable, but not sure it quite makes it to 4.
Meh
Bueno
I did enjoy listening to this one more than I expected. Not a generic late 90s rock album.
Pretty good
I liked quite some songs on here but it does get increasingly difficult to listen to the longer the album goes on. Nevertheless, some great music and interesting sounds to enjoy.
I lived in Portland for 14 years and never knew they were from there, but buy does this sound like PDX.
Based on the band name that had no business being as good as it was.
It’s not perfect but it’s pretty good! A great departure from music of that era.
I've been familiar with this band for awhile, but this is the first time I've actually listened to any of their stuff. It's pretty good. Sounds like something I could've really gotten into back in high school. Favorite track: Boys Better 3.5/5
Sorprendió eh. Estuvo mucho mejor de lo que esperaba después de escuchar la primera canción. 5 puntos, pero bastante disfrutable.
"Be-In" could've been so much better if it had been cut short. That song was way too long for what it had to offer, dragged out beyond any possible need. "Orange" has such a cool instrumental; it is so interesting, kind of mysterious and unknown, treading lightly into a second of joy. On the other hand, "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" is kind of boring. It feels like I've heard that song a hundred times before, and I am not a big fan of it at all. I really liked this album at first, but it just got blander and blander as it went on. It is starting to make me snooze, and "Green" is the best example of this. He is also doing that half whispering, half talking singing voice that is so hard to nail without making me physically recoil, and he is clearly not succeeding at it. "Good Morning" is making me cringe a bit, too. It is just the way he says "good morning"; I do not know, I am just not a fan of that song. The singles are also kind of weak, in my opinion. I enjoy the lesser appreciated songs way more, and I am not saying that just to be "oh so different" and special; I think the hits were designed with a more commercial appeal in mind as they lean a bit more towards pop. I like the more alternative songs on this album. The album is fine as a whole; it is alright, nothing groundbreaking, but an easy listen. I think it pretty much is what you expect it to be, honestly. Why does "Pete International Airport" sound like that towards the end? The start is kind of meh, but it gets more interesting as it finishes. Was it their goal to make it sound like an abandoned airport with broken or boarded up windows? It is a zombie apocalypse, and not just any zombies, the DayZ zombies. You are hiding in said abandoned airport, a storm is brewing outside, night is falling, and everything is quiet. All you can hear is the gushing wind through the cracks, crevices, and broken windows when all of a sudden... basically, this is the vibe that song gives me. Now, onto the last song. This sounds like a really extended movie soundtrack, the type of sound played during a movie's climax. Those distortions kind of sound like an Australian didgeridoo, so in my head, this song feels Australian. It is like there is a group of guys stranded somewhere in the middle of the Australian outback, trying to get back to civilization, and this starts playing during the montage of them learning wilderness survival, the kind of thing that happens in these types of movies every single time. These last two songs are interesting regarding their composition, but I do not see why they were included in this album at all. I do not see them working well with the rest of it. Maybe I am too stupid to see the vision or understand the deeper layer. Fave song(s): Orange, Minnesoter Least favorite song(s): Green Deserving of being on this list? Eh. Its legacy isn't that great, the critical reception was just alright, and it is not an incredible album based on my taste, so I am inclined toward a no. Is it a fine album? Yeah. Should everyone listen to it before they die? No way.
Я не фанат оцього спейс-психоделік-рок ревайвлу, але цей альбом був нічогенький. Тільки "інді" місця в ньому слабкі.
I really wanted to enjoy this more because some of the songs on this are so damn good, but it's just like 20 minutes too long, and most of that is to do with the final 2 instrumentals.
I feel like I should like this album more than I do. It has a lot of the component parts of the music I tend to really like but for whatever reason, I'm kind of indifferent to this album. 3.5/5.
Pretty crunchy but doesn't really resonate with me
(4/7) some surprisingly good stuff on here but also a high dose of strangeness
Never listen to this before even though I grew up during its time. Pretty good and very 90s although I don't think I would have cared for it when I was younger.
Good vibe - I imagine it’s the kind of music you’d listen to handcuffed to the bed by your ex bf while his best friend goes down on you
Slightly grungey alt rock
Cool band, new for me!
Fav song: Cool as Kim Deal
I really liked a lot of this album, but this is one of those times that less would have been more. If a few of the weaker cuts had been excluded, I would be giving this record four stars. As it is, I will settle on a strong three. It was for the most part, a fun listen. I am glad that it was included as I had zero familiarity with this band.
A stoned drunken shoe gaze populated meander. The power pop moments tie it together a bit, but it still is pretty unmemorable.
boys better - концовка классная minnesoter - вайбовый orange - прмкольный короче я устал выписывать треки. Каждый трек реально чем то примечателен, нереальный вайб
There were points where this was great and although nothing jumped out at me and included none of the tracks that I knew from them, it was a nice one. Nothing wow, but good.
As I get close to the end of the 1001, it's becoming harder to impress me. This was moody and interesting but nothing terribly exciting.
A more tuned-back MBV sound. Not quite as experimental. Overall quite decent. 3/5
A decent listen.
The upbeat songs are fun, but there's not enough of them. The slower stuff just drags and grinds the album to a halt. Probably better served as music on in the background instead of being listened to intently.
About 5 songs into this album, you realise that the DWs have a formula, but it's a pretty good one. It's rock, but sanitised through production and multiple overdubs. It's upbeat, but it's not hugely compelling, and lends itself to passive listening. Scrapes a 3
It's background noise to me
At points, this is pretty good. But it's a meandering thing, and gets lost.
7 / 10
not for me. i was intringued in a few moments but maybe i didn’t listen it at the right time. however, it wasn’t complete sht
Inoffensive, I suppose, but it’s nothing special. The album didn’t grab my attention in 1997, and it still doesn’t. (Also, it’s 20 minutes longer than it needed to be.)
I was pleasantly surprised by this record! Definitely enjoyed the drone-y, almost early Tame Impala-esque tracks (like Be-In), but also liked some of the simpler pop tracks here. Some funny lyrics here and there as well! However, a lot of these (especially the slower moments) never really caught my attention. Not really the most unique or original sound, but whatever. Favorites: Be-In, Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth, Cool As Kim Deal
The Dandy Warhols are fine, and this album is solid, but would I include it on a list like this? Probably not. Victim to the CD bloat of the era, and I would probably pick quite a few other records from the 90s psych rock revival scene over this. (Please note no Elephant Six bands are represented on this list....) DIG! is great though, go watch that. I wonder if Anton is mad that the Dandys are on here and not BJM.
this album made me want to listen to Weezer
The band offers some interesting ideas, great sounds and intoxicating textures, but unfortunately they also run out of steam quite fast. At it's best the album is catchy and very trippy, but also has a lot of moments that feel boring and awkward.
First track was the same chords repeating over and over again and then the next sounded exactly the same. The sound is nice and rich but I don't dig such songwriting. P.S. I eventually liked one song (Good Morning) so I'm changing from 2 to 3
Very mid, but has at least passion and drive behind it, you can tell they put a lot of effort into it, it's just a shame that their brand of neo-psychedelia wasn't particularly interesting
For some reason I thought this was the band that Bob Dylan’s son was in. It isn’t. I have nothing else to say about this album
The first half was great, fun pop-rock with seemingly a bit of 90's grunge influence mixed in. I don't know why the last 20 minutes of this album wasn't cut. It just goes on forever for no discernible reason. Really killed the quality of this album holistically.
This was not bad, but did not particularly impress me.
7/10
Atmospheric Brit Pop that was really quite nice. Over an hour was a bit much, though, especially with how much Brit pop of similar sound is on this list.
Ihan semi jees, voisin kuunnella uudelleen
I actually liked this album but it is way too saturated. It gets rather boring there at the end not to mention it’s like bare minimum 3 songs and a good 20 minutes too long. If that was fixed the vibes lowkey are giving a high 80. The best part without a doubt is that mouth harp, such a freakin unique sound that I love!
Enjoyable
Not bad, not blowing me away. Is this 'shoegaze?' Some kinda nice atmospheric jams but a little meandering.
Listening to this record felt like a breath of fresh air, even though I'm not the biggest fan of the band.
Pretty decent rock stoner rock album. Had some interesting sounds. Not sure its something I'd return to.
I enjoyed the second half more than the first - it had a bit of a Matt Johnson soundtrack vibe.
Interesting. Some songs reminded me of Nirvana, some a more emo s as lt band. Overall better than I expected.
pretty good! very of its time but more than meets the eye esp when i only know them for Veronic Mars
The long instrumentals at the end threw off the overall album
Kind of boring
The rock is nice and gentle, but lyrics are questionable.
Likeable pop garage-grunge, enjoyable in its day (if a bit glossy) but sounds better today. Inevitably and needlessly coupled with BJM, and in fairness to the Dandies they were shooting for broader appeal I believe. Good crafty guitar pop (but nothing more)
3 out of 5. Almost a 4 but still a good listen.
Didn't think i'd ever heard anything from these guys but then I hit the "heroin is so passe" song lol. Nothing crazy but its a pretty decent album top to bottom
Pretty good.
This hit me like when I found out people from my high school were famous as adults. Like, this is the stuff playing in your high neighbor's garage in the '90s, it seems like mood music to me, and it's super hard to see it as its own art.
A lot that’s killer, a lot more that’s filler.
hey these songs are in movies
They have a distinct sound of snark and sharp observation that set them apart from other bands of the 90s. Warhols just sound really good, too. “Boys Better” is my favorite on here, a great rolling buzz track. I don’t mind the two long instrumental tracks that the record back-to-back; they make a languid vibe that offsets the harder energy of what came before.
I was expecting to like this way more than I did. I've heard of The Dandy Warhols as an American britpop act. And I love britpop. But it was just kinda only okay. Maybe I'll revisit at some point, but for now I don't love it.
This is fine. Forgettable but enjoyable enough I guess
Ai, ai, ás veces metes a pata, tío, e todo sae do revés. Ademais, vindo de escoitar onte o de Faust, as comparacións son odiosas. (#20 dos 1.001 discos que escoitar antes de morrer: 2,5/5)
It's all right, but pretty bland, and for every track I like (Good Morning is a stand out), there are several that bore me. 5/10, and can we swap it out for The Brian Jonestown Massacre?
Enjoyable. A little forgettable tho.
It's... ok. Not sure what it's doing in this list honestly. 13 Tales From Urban Bohemia is a lot better, IF you're going to include the Dandies on this list at all. This record doesn't even really have historical significance as far as I'm aware. It's a bit of a slog.
I like these guys but this isn't their best album. They're the masters of the indie rock drone though, there was at least some decent droning throughout, especially The Creep Out. The quality of songs wasn't as engaging as Urban Bohemia or Monkey House.
I actually like this record but I’m not sure what it’s doing on this list. That being said, Minnesoter is such a good track.
This is perfectly ok as an album. I would have loved this in the late 90's
Okay, love this sound! Will definitely be checking out the rest of their albums. 3.5
3.5
3 stars. Sort of anonymously 90's sounding.
It was neat kinda old times sounding psych.
Ah.. the '90s. When I'd enjoy a couple of songs a from a bands new album, so save up and go by the CD. Only to find out they're the only 2 good songs on the album, the rest are average at best.
per me tendeva pure al 4, solo che verso la fine l’ho trovato un po’ pesante. comunque top 3 non in ordine: i love you, good morning, green
Carino, forse un po’ troppo lungo e alcuni pezzi troppo psichedelici
didnt listen to all songs, kind of forgettable
A nice blend of fun party songs and chill ambient songs, with a variety of interesting guitar sounds.
An interesting album. I don't think I could guess the singles, however a quick check shows my least favourite "not if you were the last junkie on earth" is one of them. If the singles hit stronger with me I'd give it a 4, but otherwise going high 3.
I’m going high 3 for Dandy Warhols, a lot of variety. The shoe gaze bits and when the keyboards kick in are the best bits. Feels a bit disjointed at times
Liked the spacey, echoey slow parts, reminiscent of early Verve. Lost it towards the end and could have been better without last 2 tracks.
I thought Inknew them, but I guess I did not. But, decent enough spin.
A good album, I liked Boys Better and Orange the most.
Like it 3/5
I didn't know who this band was. A couple of the songs like Hard On For Jesus and Cool As Kim Deal grabbed me simply because of the title. The album itself was just ok for me. No stand out hits really. And no songs that made me stop and dance or add to playlist.
I had heard of the Dandy Warh9ls but wasnt super familiar with their work. I actually enjoyed this one- i could see how it was influential to early 2000s alt rock. Almost like a more American take on brit pop. Overall- good album. 3.5/5
Gostei
It was good. Kind of reminded me a bit of Yo La Tengo. Catchy at times, but also a bit repetitive. 3/5 Might listen again
- les ptit riff de guitares qui ont des vibes tantot punk, tantot plus chill indie c’est vraiment un vibe - minnesoter et not if you were the last junkie on earth are straight up bangersssss - it’s very good but not great, 3.5/5
Textured psychedelic effects and poppy vocal hooks combine in this decent 90s alt rock album. The music is best when the efforts to really fuse these are strongest - the songs that lean too heavily toward traditional pop-rock sounds or slowed druggy music aren’t as interesting as those that integrate them. There are a few songs I enjoyed quite a lot, especially the first few tracks and a couple scattered through. It’s not consistent enough for a high rating, but some aspects caught my interest and I’ll likely revisit to see if that changes with familiarity.
I didn't really enjoy this.
not bad
Fell off at the end
Cool, drone-y grunge. Easy listening imo. Just didn’t shine enough to fall in love. It’s like a 3.5
That army has got some well nice trenches! This started very strongly, quite Neil Young-esque psychedelica, but then the slower tracks like Orange get in the way a bit. The album also closes with 15 minutes worth of somewhat plodding instrumentlas. It's over an hour long and could've been much better with a few fillers cut.
they went towards pop with this second album and it sounds as hundreds britpop bands
fine but mostly just boring
There’s nothing bad about this album. I can listen to it straight through without feeling the urge to skip anything, and a lot of the songs are pretty catchy. Still, nothing really stands out or sticks with me once it’s over. 3.5/5
