BostonMore Than A Feeling is a true soaring classic but the rest of the album seemed samey FM rock.
More Than A Feeling is a true soaring classic but the rest of the album seemed samey FM rock.
So many years on , it’s difficult not to hear the seeds of the classic albums to come. Still a great listen though. Apart from the well known singles, Turn You Inside Out and Hairshirt were standouts for me.
I’m not a big fan of covers/standards albums and this didn’t change my mind. Nice vocals and I enjoyed “ On The Sunny Side of The Street” but won’t return to this album!
Very impressive double album with one strong track after another. I have probably heard the big hits a few too many times but great to discover tracks I never knew like Saturn. A lot of the songs are a bit too long though and I could have done without the two instrumentals!
Not my favourite PS album. Wonderful vocals and some great songs but some songs a bit too whimsical. Run That Body Down is my favourite track.
The intro to Sara is still spine tingling and the title track is an odd, eccentric masterpiece. The rest couldn’t really sustain me through a whole double album though.
Really enjoyed some of the more upbeat songs. Great band and bass sound. A bit dated overall though.
Nice album. Very typical early 90s sound. Very upbeat and fun. Good to listen to Groove Is In The Heart more closely.
I wasn’t really looking forward to listening to this album but really enjoyed it. Quite a variety of different styles. Great musicianship. The two G songs were really good as was Vendetta.
Still fresh and raw after 55 years. True classic album!
That sound - just flows through the album. One great song after another. Such an influential album.
Rhythmically interesting and good for running! I only really enjoyed a couple of songs though - Juicy and Respect. Won’t be coming back to this one.
The hits are familiar and good but not much else to interest me on this album. Don’t Get Mad, Get Even was a bit more bluesy and interesting.
Mostly a covers album but well above average for this genre. Great backing band and soulful vocals.
Hasn’t aged well. 80s pop and nothing really to recommend outside the catchy hit singles.
Every track is strong and well produced. Vocals are spot on and a surprisingly enjoyable album.
Nice album but quite dated now and “of it’s time”. Enjoyed Grace Slick’s vocals.
My first Randy Newman album and quite a treat. Simple short songs with sarcastic deeper meaning in the lyrics. Enjoyed every song.
Started off well with ‘I looked away’ but most of the originals descended into over long doodles. Big Allman influence. The old blues numbers were good.
Music doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Each song is a wonderful stand alone vignette. Urgent and refreshing. I enjoyed all the tracks not just the well known couple.
I am a long time big EC fan and I think Alison is one of the best songs ever written. This was quite a debut but the songs are not all as strong as most albums to come. Also, it’s not the Attractions!
All sounds a bit dated and ‘Austin Powers’ now. Quite repetitive. Enjoyed Mo Onions though as a variation on the famous track!
Was really not expecting much(!) but this is a strangely enjoyable album, especially the more upbeat ‘chanty’ songs. Will come back and listen again.
Great album. The second side was a bit of a shock after the gentle acoustic side 1! Loved the guitar work on Powderfinger.
Took a bit of stamina to get through this collection of country crooning. Not for me.
Loved this album even the tracks that Lou Reed didn’t sing. Guitar work, melodies, lyrics. Every song was good.
I have never listened to this album before although the famous songs I know well. Amazing. A lot more psychedelic than I was expecting. What a debut and a classic album.
A bit overrated for me. The famous songs are great but the rest lack variety. Liked My Michelle!
A fun, energetic, eclectic album. Enjoyed every track.
Listened to this on the day of Brian Wilson’s death. I’m not really a Beach Boys fan but this is a wonderful album full of melodic, quirky songs. Some of it reminds me of early 10cc.
Very nice album. The vocals are very soulful and songwriting is high quality.
Was looking forward to this one but a bit underwhelmed by the first 2 tracks on first listen. Then it all took off after the Classic Child In Time. One great song after another and a very nice early example of the genre!
So Beatlesque that it almost seems like a pastiche! Nice melodic songs and vocals though.
Must admit I’ve never heard of this band or album. Great bit of angry, disaffected punk though and obviously a very influential album. Really enjoyed the riffs and guitar work. I think Green Day lifted a lot from this EP!
Good solid early 70s rock. Fell away a bit for me after the title track. Big Free influence. Great vocals (high in the mix).
Haven’t listened to this for years and because of the length never listened to the whole album! Saw Sigur Ros live once and it was quite an experience. This is a beautiful and unique album. Particularly enjoyed the tracks where the rhythm section also were to the fore.
Used to sound really hard and edgy when I was young but now seems very mainstream! Great album though even if it suffers a bit from overplaying especially here in Australia.
Pleasant enough sixties psychedelic rock. Very thin guitar sound. Wouldn’t go back to it.
Intriguing album. Some great songs there and unique guitar sounds. If only the vocals could be a bit higher up in the mix but I guess that’s the point of the production! Definitely a grower and will come back to it.
I know he’s a legend but I found this album boring and repetitive (apart from the second half of Egbe Mi O).
This album was huge and all pervasive when it came out. Hasn’t aged well for me though. Some great tracks but tends to be a lot more repetitive than I remember. The big tracks have been overplayed too!
Wonderful album full of inventive, dark songs. Those lyrics are dark though! Even a Revolution #9 like finale.
Nice vocals and smooth music. A bit like movie soundtrack or background music for me though.
Wow this really works! Great combination of music styles, especially the faster, heavier songs. Would have been great to have been at the concerts.
Not my favourite genre/vocal style but cracking songs. The Costello and Waits songs are easy to spot. Listened twice and will go back to it. I liked it when she rocked out a bit!
Enjoyed the big hits and Lauryn Hill’s vocals. Apart from The Mask, the rest I didn’t really care for.
Great, energetic dance music. Still sounds good. Narayan is a bit too long but otherwise still a great album.
Two all time classic songs. The rest was interesting but I wasn’t tempted for a second listen. Why did Freddie not sing lead on all the tracks?!
As a long time fan of Rufus’ Dad, I had never quite got into the ‘tit man’ before and was initially put off by his vocal style. This album is outstanding though and I listened several times. Echoes of Radiohead and a lot of Beatlesque moments. Oh What A World Is a great opener. Will keep coming back to this album.
Simple country songs with great vocals. I enjoyed every track. Not very 1967 though!
Certainly very funky but I found it quite repetitive and difficult to listen to.
Very influential band I know and it must have been quite something in 1976! Always enjoy listening to a couple of songs by the Ramones but a full album is a bit of a struggle!
Great Fall Album. Loved every track, especially Gut of the Quantifier (what a song title!). There’s always something interesting and engaging in almost all Fall albums. As John Peel said - ‘ always the same, always different’.
Bit of a struggle to get through this double album. A few very good tracks but most of the material felt lightweight and inconsequential to me.
Really enjoyed this one and will come back to it. Full of energetic quirky songs and great (acoustic?) bass sound.
This album rocks (if I can say that about a hip hop album?). Love the variety of music styles and voices. Intelligent lyrics. Not my favourite genre but will come back to this one.
Last listened to this when I was a kid. Thought it was too long then and my opinion hasn’t changed. Obviously some all time classic songs but it could have been trimmed to a much better single LP I think.
Nice album of ambient/trip hop with big Portishead influence although seems to lack the emotional depth of Beth Gibbons.
Listened on the day Ozzy died but of course Sabbath were much more than just Ozzy Osbourne. The playing of Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler is astounding. Worth 5 stars for the opening track alone. That flat 5th on the opening track still dramatic and iconic. What must people have thought in 1970? Not a weak track on this album. Recorded live in 12 hrs and finished in time to get to the pub!!
Can’t believe I missed this one. Loved Dummy and Portishead when they came out in the 90s. I think this might be better. Very different musical styles and every song is quite different but all held together by that voice. The ‘Krautrock’ songs were particularly good!
Classic soul and an iconic voice. Strangely though, not an album that I would listen to again!
Mostly just ambient/background music to me. Was not impressed but the last 2 tracks were much more listenable.
Stunning debut album by a teenager at the time. First 5 tracks almost perfect then the energy fell away a little before coming back with Carrion.
Never heard of this artist or the genre of African blues but this is a great album. Interestingly some of the tracks sound a bit like Indian chanting music to me. Some very nice Richard Thompson like guitar work aswell.
Lovely album and such a familiar sound! Very Beatles influenced harmonies and melodies. Listened a few times and will come back it.
Iconic album! Not a big fan of early JC but this was an electrifying performance. Cocaine Blues was a highlight.
Nice selection of songs and great production by Nigel Goodrich, but I just don’t like his voice!
Great album of spacey rock. Really takes off from Shine a Light to the end.
Can’t get much more 80s than this! All strong songs though and I never appreciated at the time how good John Taylor’s bass playing was.
Not a big fan of compilations like this. Good energetic garage rock though although the songs do all sound very similar!
I was only familiar with the famous tracks before but this is a great, fun album to listen to. Loved the Rick Rubin influence with real instruments!!
Never listened to SS before and this was a pleasant surprise. Somewhat reminiscent of Prefab Sprout! All strong songs nicely produced and I even enjoyed the instrumentals. Very long though and I couldn’t quite get into the concept thing.
Raw aggressive rock and roll, too loud, too many guitars - brilliant!! Hasn’t lost any of its impact 30 years plus since I first bought it on the week of release. Slide Away is maybe the best track? Even the acoustic coda has bite - “yer music’s shite, it keeps me up all night”! One of the all time great debut albums.
Always found her a bit too ‘country’ before but this album is stunning. What a voice (recorded live) and such great songs. I enjoyed the guitar playing aswell and I will keep coming back to this album.
I have tried to get into Ryan Adams including attending a 3 hr secret gig. I listened to the whole album but it still doesn’t do it for me. I find his music and voice very generic and boring.
Was looking forward to this as I’d heard good things about the band. Disappointed though and was a struggle to get through. Just sounded like Mumford and Sons. Won’t listen again.
My first Leonard Cohen album! Obviously profound songs written at the end of his life but I really didn’t enjoy the spoken word vocals.
Very nice album and quite eclectic. Enjoyed all the tracks. The Bob Dylan parody was hilarious!
Very good blues performance (of course). I prefer his playing to his singing though. As someone said in another review, good to have listened but I won’t come back to it.
Haven’t listened to this for ages but it’s lost none of its power or poignancy. One of the all time great vocal performances. He was right not to encore after ‘where did you sleep last night’. How can you follow that!!?
Any album that bookends ‘like a rolling stone’ with ‘ desolation row’ automatically has to be 5 stars. All the tracks in between are either very good or classics. ‘Ballad of a thin man’ may be my favourite but I never tire of listening to all 11 minutes of ‘desolation row’.
