Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! is the debut studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in August 1978 on the Warner Bros. label (Virgin Records in Europe). Produced by Brian Eno, the album was recorded between October 1977 and February 1978, primarily in Cologne, West Germany. The album received somewhat mixed reviews from critics and peaked at No. 78 on the U.S. Billboard chart and No. 12 on the UK Albums Chart. Recent reviews of the album have been more uniformly positive and the album has been included on several retrospective "best of" lists from publications including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and Spin. On May 6, 2009, Devo performed the album live in its entirety for the first time as part of the Don't Look Back concert series curated by All Tomorrow's Parties. On September 16, 2009, Warner Bros. and Devo announced a re-release of Q: Are We Not Men? and Freedom of Choice, with a tour performing both albums.

This was super fun and goofy, and their creativity really stands out. I dig the Satisfaction cover too. This is probably more of a 3.5 but I’m gonna round up on this one.

These guys seem like they'd be really really annoying to be around. I just can't with the novelty BS. Also, the dude on the cover looks just like Tom Brady and it's creepy.

10/14 Was okay

I enjoyed Devo, but I'm not sure there is much depth here. Stylised 80's production and beats, choppy guitars and not much variation. I accidentally listened to the expanded album with Whip it on and their contribution doesnt really go beyond that

Is that Tom Brady on the album cover?

Gotta approach Devo expecting to be confuddled. It helps. Good album but i prefer their later more synth heavy stuff 'I cant get me no Satisfaction' is how you do a cover 'Uncontrollable Urge' and 'Mongoloid' and 'Shrivel Up' my faves Thought 'Turnaround' was on this album but heyho 3.5

solid stuff by the legends of New Wave 5/5

Devo deserves to be on the list, but they have better albums.

Like a more guitar-driven Talking Heads, Devo are almost always catchy & I love what they're 'bout. In a way, they're the Doors of new wave - you can intuit their inconsistency, & they're a bit too artsy for what they actually are at the end of the day - but at least on their debut, they pull it off, whate'er it is they want to get across. Things really started to coalesce for me on the curt 'Space Junk,' one of the more emotional tracks on the record, & there simply is a great deal of creativity manifest here. Unfortunately annoying at times, especially the 'title-track' 'Jocko Homo',' Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo is nonetheless a necessary & meaningful classic. I have no idea what they went on to do after, & I kinda don't care, but w/ this one they did enuf.

Dated and annoying

different but definitely some cool moments

The androids of the future were already making music decades ago

Was never into Devo back in the day. Still not into them.

This is definitely one of the most fun albums I have listened to in a while. Plenty of quirks and oddities to enjoy, which is what I would expect from a band that wears those funny red hats. I say the were ahead of their time, but I should also say that they helped pave the way for not only the post-punk scene, but also contributing towards the rise of industrial music. Even Trent reznor acknowledges them as an inspiration of some form for nine inch nails. I will definitely listen to their other albums in future

Surprisingly listenable!

Another New Wave album produced by Brian Eno and David Bowie. Post-punk and fun-rock. The question is: should we take it all seriously? After listening, I’d say yes. While their music doesn't quite resonate with me personally, DEVO was undoubtedly crucial for all the alternative bands that followed. They don't take themselves or their surroundings too seriously; much of what they do is satire, and the music itself becomes an experiment. "Jocko Homo" is Devo’s undisputed manifesto and their key programmatic track. The song provides the theoretical basis for the band's name, Devo, which is derived from "de-evolution" (evolution in reverse). The central thesis is that humanity is not progressing but rather degenerating—driven by herd mentality, blind consumerism, and social conformity—back to a primitive, ape-like state. The song parodied the arrogance of the modern businessman by exposing him as nothing more than an ape blindly following orders. To this day, the track is considered one of the smartest and most biting satires of the entire post-punk and New Wave era. The music often sounds staccato and features unusual time signatures. At times, it creates a stumbling, robotic feel. It isn't the kind of music I listen to—or could listen to—every day, but this record certainly deserves its place on this list.

I've always had low tolerance with humor music and this album doesn't change that

Weirdly I even enjoyed this!

#495 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ I've only really heard Devo's name and few tracks that used to play pn MTV in the 80's, I had heard the horrible Satisfaction cover on this record before. I always thought they were a pop band with weird hats, new wave punk-ish pop was not on my radar. I am curious why they're on this list of albums tho. It's like a second rate cover band of... that "other band I also don't like" which name I can't remember now. "Mongoloid" suprised me tho, I know it from psychobilly band Demented Are Go record, but now realised Finnish punk band Sehr Schnell also covered it too. Annoying music, so 2/5

These were more talented than I had set in my mind. They demonstrate an ability to develop intricate percussion tracks and imaginative rearrangements of a classic song “Can’t Get No Satisfaction”. They introduce us to New Wave. They use punk styles in unique ways. The list goes on. Glad this one was on the list.

This was really fun, I think I'll be coming back to this!

This is a great album, really enjoyed it

Yeah its fucking good, it is less good than I remember it being but I guess I just like New Wave less than I used to Fav track: Mongoloid 7.5/10

Love this, these guys were peak on here. Any LP that has a track called Mongoloid has a lot to live up to and they absolutely crush it. Other than the hits Uncontrollable Urge & Gut Feeling, listen to Space Junk & Jonee

Listened to it twice and really liked it. It's whacky, got some silly Talking Heads vibes that I really dug. Consider me a Devo fan. Favourites: Uncontrollable Urge Praying Hands Too Much Paranoias

Sound is a lot like B-52s 3/5

Super fun and quirky, very punky new wave. I liked this a lot! Will be returning to this definitely.

Sometimes progressive innovators are great, but this lot created the prototype which just got much better elsewhere.

The band responsible for me coming the closest I came to being expelled from school. So, for old times' sake alone, five stars

Devo’d to have to listen to this. Not my thing.

The real question here is whether you'd risk a detention for it. Sadly the answer is no. 2*

Annoying

Wow, finally some NEO representation! there are some interesting punk elements here, but i mostly don't like their sound. 4 songs into the album, it felt like i'd been listening for an hour.

I don't think I was fully prepared for the cacophonous noise that is Devo. I also don't think I was fully prepared for how fun that cacophonous noise actually was?

Classic album. A few bum notes for me, but I love these guys. Easy 4/5

LP cover is Tom Brady before Tom Brady was Tom Brady. Good LP too!

Devo was one of those bands that I hadn't gotten into until well into adulthood. And this album is quintessential Devo. I hadn't heard the album in full in quite a while. I was glad to have it pop up here. Like many albums that show up on this list, AWNM-WAD is one whose influence can be felt decades later. How strange it would have sounded back in '78, and even now it's a fun oddball.

I feel this is less "weird" to ears now, very good though.

Some kind of new wave. Probably one of the first signs of the upcoming 80s. I was an 80s kid, but that’s not an excuse. It sucks

An outrageous record that’s an outrageous amount of fun.

Weird, but a fun weird. Are we not Men? naw, We are Devo. I actually put two tracks from this one on my playlist. The main hit from this album Jacko Homo, and Uncontrollable Urge, The latter of which I swear I've heard versions of before but never this version. I like it.

Devo is weird.

Never really got into Devo although I do like a couple of their songs. This was a decent listen but didn’t blow me away

This album felt like when I spent a long night out and you cut your friend off and they snuck one more drink, line, pill or whatever and went from fun drunk/high to over the top. I know you are Devo, yes you said you were Devo, everyone knows that you are Devo... It reminded me of the movie Go, just disjointed, flying around not making sense. At times I liked it (much like my drunk/high friend) but then other times they run off with a stranger or are dancing on the tables and you have to drag them back.

Are Devo men? Is a man a Devo? What is a Devo? Who is Devo? All these questions and no answers.

DEVO! Their debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, is their defining moment. Mixing punkish tendencies with new wave instrumentation, this is weirdo rock at it's finest (for the period). I'm also noticing how clear The Residents' influence is on Devo, especially with the Rolling Stones cover. "Uncontrollable Urge" alone qualifies Q:AWNM?A:WAD for essential listening.

Devo needs to sort out their discography on streaming services. Everything is accessible but it looks really ugly and messy to pair their debut with some random Live album. The album itself is fine enough. Classic early New Wave with some great and goofy tunes on it. Devo can get kind of annoying though. some of the repeating phrases here just kind of irk me and makes some songs less than pleasant to listen to. It's goofy fun but still. If it had Whip It on here it would have gotten 5 stars.

More yelping man music. Yay.

Quite weird. Like the tight rhythms more than the vocal style.

weird lil guys doing weird lil guys music some very good tracks. some annoying tracks. I wish the quality was more consistent throughout the sound is ahead of its time though. this came out in 78 and became the sound of the 80s weird lil guys genre

Uhh, yeah. Okay, so DEVO was weird and gimmicky when they were introduced, even weird and gimmicky for the Punk New Wave era. This has aged as well as milk. Plus 1 for being dicks to Brian Eno though, so there’s that.

Was very tempted to just give this a 1. Not entirely sure why I didn’t. It’s really not all that great.

I like it fine but I don't absolutely love it. I have that nagging feeling I should like Devo more than I do.

I just didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped I would

Weird but in a fun way

I had a chuckle at the first few songs and especially I cant get no satisfaction but by the 7th drilling song with grading vocals I found myself fatigued

7/10 Highly inventive load of rubbish Highlights: Mongoloid I Can't Get No Satisfaction Gut Feeling Shrivel Up Uncontrollabe Urge Too Much Paranoias Jocko Homo

In those days, they still dared to call mentally handicapped folks mongoloid. This is how dated this record is - and the same goes for the music.

Really enjoyed the first song. The rest were decent. I guess I have a bit of an appreciation since I watched the Devo documentary that was on Netflix. (3)

I’m just not much of a fan of this art-pop/new wave stuff. Too much twitchy weirdness, stiff rhythms, and vocals that sound like they’re intentionally trying to be annoying. I know Devo’s whole thing is supposed to be strange and satirical, but knowing that doesn’t make me enjoy listening to it any more. I did recognize “Uncontrollable Urge” immediately as the theme from Ridiculousness, so at least that gave me something familiar right out of the gate. Hopefully they’re still getting a check from MTV for that one. Their cover of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was terrible, though. Taking one of the most famous rock songs ever and turning it into that jerky, nervous mess did absolutely nothing for me. There are some decent guitar parts buried underneath all the weirdness, but most of the album just confirmed that this particular corner of late 70s and early 80s music isn’t for me.

Like this more than I should perhaps. It does need to be played at the right time. If quiet and contemplative is the mood, this ain’t it. But it does have my favorite version of Satisfaction. Now THAT’S how a cove is done properly. 4 Boolean: True

Imagine if this were performed by a band that was good.

Not too bad, different and unique. Little bit nerdy.

Look, I've got a deep affection for Devo ever since. I first discovered them on VH1 back in the day. They're weird. I had their CD and I appreciate that about them, but although there are a couple songs I do like I'm going to take it down to a three. If I was building out a digital collection or physical collection I would go with the greatest hits because some of these deep cuts are a little too weird and you know what if I didn't have that long time. Nostalgic appreciation form. I would find this not only weird but kind of annoying so I can see that if others aren't feeling it

Very cool 3.5/5

Lekker domme punky new wave.

Great and inventive. With an antiestablishment message from some talented guys.

One of the greatest albums ever

they were highkey right about the whole d-evo thing

Devo-tastic

Was strange

Very interesting. I didn’t like it but I found it clever so I can’t say it was bad.

This just fits into my DNA.

Would never listen to in my free time, its the voice

Is dit new wave? FAVO: Mongoloid, Sloppy

Decent album. They definitely made the covers their own and sounds a lot different than the originals. Enjoyed the album, just nothing special to me.

Omituista huutelulaulumuzaa. Mutta jotenkin se passasi rauhallisen autoiluretken taustalle.

Devo kuulosti vähemmän yllättäen Devolta. Musiikki kuulosti just samalta kun miltä levynkansi näyttää.

This was a pretty good album. I had only heard Whip It! before this. It was cool to hear Devo be a little less "Devo" in a sense, but still I could tell they were innovative and artsy. Not too bad.

Doing this project has really contextualized Devo for me. I also feel like I understand why so many indie rock bands of the 2000s are described as "post punk revival." I can also now pinpoint what makes the revival different from the original and explain why I don't much care for original post punk despite the revival being maybe my favorite genre ever. The Wikipedia for this album includes a contemporary quote referring to this as novelty music. By the time you hear the album title fifty times in Jocko Homo, it's hard to disagree.

Great stuff, though I always thought that Devo tried hard to be zany. The European cover for this album is better than the American one.

Meh typical of the age nothing spectacular

I was expecting a dozen variations of “Whip It,” so was pleasantly surprised that this slightly favored early Talking Heads. Not enough to make me want to listen again, but enough so I didn’t hate it.

Perhaps Devo is in the wake of bands like Talking Heads, but they are extremely fun in their silliness.

This is my favorite Devo album I’ve listened to. Enjoy pretty much all the songs from front to back.

Gets a few points for being unique and out there, but it’s definitely not for me. Rating: 3/10 Favorite Song: Mongoloid

#1043. The album cover looks like Uncanny Valley Tom Brady. 3/5: acceptable

I enjoyed it, though some songs were a bit repetitive or harsh for me. Never listened to a Devo album before, and I would check out more.
