Album Summary
Screamadelica is the third studio album by Scottish rock band Primal Scream. It was first released on 23 September 1991 in the United Kingdom by Creation Records and on 8 October 1991 in the United States by Sire Records. The album marked a significant departure from the band's early indie rock sound, drawing inspiration from the blossoming house music scene and associated drugs such as LSD and MDMA. Much of the album's production was handled by acid house DJ Andrew Weatherall and engineer Hugo Nicolson, who remixed original recordings made by the band into dance-oriented tracks.Screamadelica, featuring Manchester born singer Denise Johnson, was the band's first album to be a commercial success, peaking at number eight on the UK Albums Chart upon its release. It received wide praise from critics, and has been frequently named one of the best albums of the 1990s in various polls. It won the first Mercury Music Prize in 1992, and has sold over three million copies worldwide.

I wish more artists made albums like this that aren't afraid to range wildly on the genres used. Plenty of this album doesn't sound like it should belong together but it does. Andrew Weatherall did so much heavy lifting on the non Stonesy ones. Around the time of this album Bobby Gillespie did an interview claiming they all moved to Brighton for the rave scene. Apparently, the real reason is his partner got a well paid job in a bank down there and of course he wasn't yet raking it in. Fair enough. The prosaic truth behind rock n roll.
Honestly, this was a bit all over the place, but I kind of loved its eccentric vibes. I thought it would have been a bit more cohesive without the dance tracks in the middle. Fitting somewhere between soft rock, psych, and trip-hop? The album cover is easily top 5 on this list so far and matches the mood and aesthetic perfectly. Top it off with some church choir backup vocals, and I am happy. This feels like it knew what it was doing, and fit the artists vision on the nose, and you know what? I respect that. Bonus points for not being another folk, rock, or 80s pop album. Fuck it, 5 stars.
It took ripping off the Rolling Stones and Andrew Weatherall making it rave, but they did make a classic
Ok (ish), but overall nope.
Didn't mind the vibe/idea, but got bored of it by the end.
Primal Scream has probably been my favorite discovery since starting 1001 Albums, since both of its albums have been very cool and good. Higher Than the Sun is my favorite on this one, but this is really an album that I think I could just put anything on and be pretty happy with.
There are some great tracks on this album I haven't heard in many years. Nice refresh.
This album starts strong. Yeah, it's all over the place, but every corner of that place is pretty neat. But then it's like the group went out of ideas. Starting with "Come Together", the songs begin to be incredibly repetitive. That one in particular, but also "Loaded", sound like listening to the end part of "Hey Jude", you know, the na-na-na-na-na-na-na, for 5 minutes straight. Half of "Come Together" is the same riff on repeat. A good riff, should I say, but that's not enough to make a song, and it made for an annoying second half of an album, because all the songs afterwards have the same issue.
We wanna get loaded And we wanna have a good time
One of the greatest albums ever
very nice
Something to the dendrites!
Yeah I actually really liked this. I don’t know why. Will be back to check out more primal scream. The name turned me away initially which is not fair. Judge the book not the cover kind of thing.
3.5
More less.
7/10 A great, seminal album and set a blueprint for the 90s. BUT it is hard not to get bored at times.
Up and down for me. Probably a 2.5 but a few songs brought me to a 3.
The most memorable thing about this album to me going forward is that it was album 400 for my project. Also the album art is kinda fun. Besides that, it is utterly forgettable in every meaningful way. I just had a very similar album yesterday that contained both Rock and Electronica elements. While the one yesterday was slightly more Rock focused, this one appears to be the same, with just a bit more Electronica. And let me tell you, when I’ve got 2 painfully generic albums in a row that are just ok, it makes it difficult saying anything about them. Doubly difficult for the second one. Listen, the beats are fine on this album. It’s all painfully acceptable 90’s beats, which were full of fun but overwhelmingly simplistic beeps, boops, and repetition. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But as a whole, it’s just so bland. I listened to this at the start of the day and had to listen to it again at the end of the day just to remember what anything sounded like at all. And the album is over an hour long. You could shave 40 minutes off of this thing and it would be all the better for it. Worst of all, my favorite song is the opener, “Movin’ on Up”, but I’ll likely forget that by tomorrow as well. Meanwhile, I’ve still got my favorite from yesterday on the top of my dome, while this one is already halfway out of my subconscious. These are the kind of songs that just go on for 5 minutes longer than they have any right to go on, unless you’re dancing in a club. And even then I’m positive that you could put on something better in the 90’s at the time. I think I’m just numb to these generally decent but otherwise unremarkable 3 star albums at this point. I’ve ranked over half of my 400 albums a 3, and I’m going to continue doing so. At least this project has given me the knowledge that I at the bare minimum can enjoy most music. But it takes something special to get me to love it. For everything else, especially something like this, it’s just going to be defaulted to a 3. 689 albums to go. If the rate I give 3’s keeps up, I’ll probably have about 550 of them by the end of this long and sometimes arduous journey. This album isn’t terrible. It’s not even a bad album. But man does it not impress me in the slightest. I’m wondering if the site counts this as “Other” since it’s Scottish. I also wonder if that’s the only reason it’s here to begin with. If so, understandable. I get it. I don’t love it, but I get it. Scotland has some goated performers like Franz Ferdinand and Garbage, both of which I’ve given 5 star reviews for already during the course of this project. Here’s the part of the review where I pull the rug right out from under you though. That album from yesterday consisting of the exact same sounds but slightly better, was another indie band hailing from Scotland, Django Django. I’d never heard of either of them before, and both were just unrelentingly average at best. The only difference is that this album has nothing that’s going to stick in my mind. It’s a very low 3 out of 5, and unbelievably it’s the first of 2 Primal Scream albums I’m getting to review for this project. Buckle in for what I can only assume is going to be yet another riveting 3 star performance whenever I roll the second one. Ok, that’s enough of this album for now. I’m ready for album 401, I say, unfurling the monkey’s paw I keep handy at all times. You really just never know with this site.
I dunno what to say, but thus album did not freak me out. Quute nice! I'll give it 5 even
Always kind of assumed in the back of my mind that this album was so well regarded because of Loaded/Movin on up and that the rest of the album probably didn’t live up to it, potentially overrated in history by the drug-addled 90s rave generation’s half forgotten memories… But pleased to say this is not the case and this was a great varied listen, beats were all pretty banging, just as well since none of the rest of the album sounds like movin on up, aside maybe Damaged being an acoustic sort of thing (which btw is a great ballad, can’t think of who it sounds like, the solo at the end is very oasis-before-oasis) All the songs seem to last 3 minutes longer than you’d expect, not a big deal though, made for a good train listen
Didn’t click with me, spent most of the album waiting for it to finish 2
Not so good nor interesting.
decent music for skyscraper cargo lifts
Not what I expected. A whole different kind of crap.
Pretty sure I've written this before. But very much not a primal scream.. didn't love it
Definition of the whole is better than the sum of it's parts. A unique take on the early 90s Madchester/Baggy scene that borrows a lot from 60s psychedelia. A lot of the songs go a little too long (blame the drugs). But Movin' On Up, Slip Inside This House (awesome cover), Higher Than the Sun, Come Together, and Loaded all make the hour long runtime worth it. Rating: 7/10
Why have I never listened to this?!? 4.5/5
Buen disco, medio falopa por momentos. Largazo pero ta bueno. Sape
Enjoyed it, this is #22 for me and the first ‘new to me’ album that’ll get added to my library
One of those electronic bands that when you hear them you know who it is. Distinct sound that gets you moving
previously listened!
Not what i was expecting at all. Pleasantly surprised? I kinda fw this, I'm hearing a lot of different influences here and some songs feel very experimental. I like it!! This band apparently changes genres a lot so may listen to more of their stuff. 3½✨ Come Together, Loaded(Fatboy Slim vibes here), Damaged, Shine Like Stars
What a pleasant surprise. This is the first album and artist here in which I had zero idea about prior. This thing is all over the place. I’m getting fatboy slim, moby, Radiohead, and the melodica on the last song reminded me of early Gorillaz. This was a vibe and a mixed bag of vibes at that. Will listen to this again and dive deeper into the artist! Favs: slip inside this house, loaded,
Interesting album, it mixes folk rock and several rock sounds and their distinctive feel with a little electronic that blends very well.
Had a hard time figuring this one out. Musically, its all over the place from house to psychedelic to pop. Overall, I just didn't like it.
Not what I was expecting from a band named Primal Scream. Definitely nothing worth screaming about here.
This album has never clicked with me. After a few listens, the singles become annoying. The deep cuts were annoying to begin with.
meh
Its really weird and fun. I loved it Its so diverse but all the song all have the same kind of vibe. The production is masterfull. However, its bloated and a little inconsistent, 2-3 songs could have been left off. Drugs/5
Favorite Song: Come Together Least Favorite: Don’t Fight It, Feel It
On the yard work scale this one wasn’t as strong as the last two I listened too. But it was still decent for yard work.
This was cool album. Not what I was expecting by the name
Another band I feel like should like but can never get fully into
Excellent (4.5)
meh
I liked the opening track (sounded like U2), but it was downhill from there.
Classic defining album of the early nineties. It's as much an Andy Weatherall album as Primal Scream. RIP
ah yes sounds like tripping on and coming down from ecstasy and LSD not that I know what that feels like. didn't hate it or anything but as the album progressed it just kind of just made me feel kinda depressed (coming down must be awful), started becoming less standalone nice to listen to and more like the type of stuff that requires you to be high while listening. "movin' on up" is really great tho
Could this perhaps be the epitome of 90s British house music? I'm not from that period, but something about the album feels SO 90s. Such a spirit of optimism (despite the melancholy tracks), that simply doesn't exist in today's British climate. This album has such a summer festival feeling. A real dancey, electronic, happy treat. I imagine people were taking a lot of E's to this one…. Clearly some great production on this, because the songs change up so you don't generally get bored. In fact, I'd argue the production from DJ Weatherhall is the driver of what makes this so good. All the original recording were remixed into these dancey songs, which is why they all have their own feel to them, and I rarely got bored listening to many of them. It was sunny when I put this on, which really enhanced my enjoyment of the album. I think generally, all the strong tracks are are at the beginning. From Loaded onwards, it gets significantly weaker. My favourites: Higher than the sun & Slip inside this house. Some of the songs do go on a bit, and I reckon they could've been cut down. But if I was in a drugged up trancey state, it would probably feel like nothing. There's something very iconic about the album art, those crunchy drums prominent in several songs & even the album title itself; Screamadelica. Album of a generation kind of thing. Overall, it was great to hear this all the way through. Felt like I went on a drug trip of sorts. I must confess I was getting FOMO at times because I just know the kids listening to this in the 90s were doing crazy amounts of drugs whilst enjoying it. Without drugs, it's still a blast. I enjoyed discovering the songs I was less familiar with, and finding that the album is more than just its big hits. Track by track breakdown below: Strong opener with Movin' on Up. Love the main singer's vocals, the positive vibe throughout and the female chorus vocals. Also very easily recognisable song, rather well known. Beautiful crunchy drumbeat in slip inside this house. Some really cool stuff going on in this track. The electronic bits, the piano…works together like a nice music salad. The track Don't fight it, feel it…relaly sums up that happy/druggy feeling. A real hippy feel to it. Great tune though, I like the electronic sound. Although it does go on a bit… Higher than the sun is a slower, downtempo song. Again, can imagine someone taking es and doing slow dancing to this. I can just imagine dancing to this on a hill in glastonbury during a sunset. Apparently The Orb produced this song, which makes a LOT of sense! Inner flight is a chill, ambient track with hidden electro parts in between. It's another genre change in the album. It's pleasant, dreamy. Going in my ambient playlist. It's a weaker track compared to the others, but still good. Come Together…ah yes, another hippy classic. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't enjoy this track as much as the others. I think because I've heard it too much; far too familiar. Also too long! But still a solid track. Loaded…probably the biggest song on here, their most well-known track. I also know it. Those crunchy drums are pretty iconic. As iconic as the album art itself. The song pretty much sums up what I thought about the album; it is drugs music. "We wanna get loaded and have a good time" Damaged is a melancholy track, vocals focussed, and feels very different to the others. Less of a festival vibe and more of a sad ballad. Probably my least favourite so far. I'm comin down continues the sadder, slower feeling. This is the downer part of the album, when the high wears off, and drugs losing their effects… Higher than the sun dub: first half is boring. Second half is when wobble's bass comes in. The bass is nice, but I prefer Orb's version of the song. Shine like stars is an OK album closer. Quite forgettable though.
Meh
Some very odd sounds, loved half of the album
Movin' On Up - 4/5 Slip Inside This House - 4/5 Don’t Fight It, Feel It - 3.5/5 Higher Than the Sun - 3.5/5 Inner Flight - 3/5 Come Together - 4/5 Loaded - 3.5/5 Damaged - 3/5 I'm Comin' Down - 3.5/5 Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts) - 3/5 Shine Line Stars - 3/5 They really do throw everything at the wall here to see what sticks. There's everything from proto-Britpop to baggy to house and even an acoustic track or two. It's good in the more baggy and neo-psychedelia spaces, but in the others they just tend to drag out a couple minutes longer than they really should. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Movin' On Up
The sound of 90s club and drug hedonism
Movin' on up, javisst! Men sen...?
If you’re going to listen to one British House/gospel/dub/indie record I’d suggest this one. I’ve listened to it a lot. In smoky student flats, as the sun was coming up and played live in its entirety by the band. It’s an album that sweeps from euphoria to despair and back again. Yeah, it’s a bit baggy and like myself bits of it have aged poorly but at its heart it’s a little jewel that reminds you why you listened to music in the first place
Great mix of guitars and electronic sounds. The grooves are amazing. Very much my thing.
There are good moments and some weird and boring moments. Great album art tho
Don’t know how I missed this in ‘91. Really enjoyed it.
Love the artwork but don’t love the music. For the catchy and danceable moments that pop up occasionally, there is a lot of filler, and I wasn’t very compelled.
(Light 6/10) I do not fully understand the hype behind this record sadly. To me this sounds very underdeveloped, and just a bit lazy. Jason Pierce from Spiritualized does this kind of thing way better and with more artistry in my eyes. The overall sound is pleasant, but the image of Mick Jagger overdosing on psychedelics and being given a sequencer was repeating through my head the entire time. I've read this album bridged a gap between electronic dance music and rock, but aside from Movin' On Up I don't quite hear that. So yeah, that is to say, I do not get it.
Not all of us did ecstacy in the 90's ok?
Starts promising, then turns quickly stale. It doesn't suck, but what a relief when the final note dropped.
We want to have a good time, we wanna have a party!
good
I wouldn't say I'd go seeking this out, but it was a really unique album. Psychedelic yoga music or something.
6.7
8/28/26. Wow, really liked this album! An ideal mix of rock, electronic, dance, and hints of trip hop & psychedelia. Need to explore this band's music more.
Despite some flashes of quality, I can’t help but feel really disappointed by this. I’ve enjoyed a number of their singles over the years, including tracks on here, but the vast majority of this album is just so wafty and weak. I hadn’t realised just how part of the baggy scene they were, as well as the dance scene. Those tracks at least have a bit of energy to them, but the back-half of the album especially is SO repetitive and meandering. I’m sure this would be greatly improved by dropping some acid or something, but I’m not on acid, and this is a let down. 2.5 rounded down.
I didn't like this one.
Don't Fight It, Feel It,
Primal Scream can be a bit hit or miss, but Screamadelica is definitely one of their hits. The fact that there are plenty of people who think this well crafted, indie rock through an ecstacy bathed lens is bad while there are so many people who thing audio offal like Metallica is good makes me despair a little.
I didn’t dislike this per se, but it felt more like a mixtape than a cohesive album. It jumped around and felt like a different genre with each track. This was odd
Movin on Up started this off and I was actually thinking this would be a good album then it just fell apart for me. Don’t need to hear this again.
Meh
This was fine, just not one I'm gonna actively choose to listen to again. But the whistly bit from "Don't fight it, feel it" will be stuck in my head all day. Doo doo doo DOO DOO. I am, however, fighting it, by drowning it out with the new Dinosaur Jr album.
This is pleasant enough dance music, but it’s far from essential. The album wouldn’t be on the list if the band weren’t from the UK. Also, there’s so much, erm, disparity on the record that it doesn’t really hang together *as an album.* 2.5
4 1/2 stars. Really good album especially when you’re high and wearing headphones.
For techno / electronics quite interesting. 3,1
It's fine
A record that shouldn’t work and largely does — Bobby Gillespie handing his band’s music to producers Andrew Weatherall and Hugo Nicolson, who rebuilt it from the inside out into something sitting at the intersection of rock, house, gospel, and dub. The gospel warmth of “Movin’ On Up” and the euphoric house pulse of “Loaded” give the record genuine emotional texture that most dance music of the era couldn’t manufacture, and the spiritual ambition running through the whole thing is real rather than decorative. The honest ceiling is that enjoyable without pull lands at three regardless of the craft on display. The electronica territory has been consistent in this project — the exceptions have been records where the groove or the warmth connected deeply enough to generate genuine enthusiasm, and Screamadelica delivers pleasantly without quite getting there. A solid three for a record that earns its reputation without earning a return visit.
Based on the band and album names I was prepared for something awful but it's actually quite benign. Boring but not hard to listen to.
Better than I expected
The early ‘90’s was really branching out all over. A lot of good music. Or was I just freshly graduated high school and looking for purpose? Either way, awesome album that reminds me heavily of basement parties.
I’ve always enjoyed this album, especially the silly little sun thing on the cover. Movin’ on Up and Loaded are wonderful, but it does become a bit meandering in parts so just short of the full five. Note this decision is influenced by me handing out fives to the last three albums generated here, like a dirty ol’ cheerleader.
Not a ton of optimism about this one, I don’t really like screamo or alt which it seems like this is. With that being said, moving on up is neither of those. Really like the drums. Good vocals. Relaxing song. Nice guitar solo in the middle too. Bringing of slip is what I was expecting, but then it turns into a normal Brit pop song. Really nice keys in this one. Another fun/relaxing song. Not a ton going on lyrically tho. Opening to don’t fight it is very interesting. Some odd sounds. Pretty cool production tho. Very 90s. Again not much going on lyrically but this one is all abt the production. Just a little too long/repetive for me. Higher than the sun is very interesting. Good production again for the most part, doing too much during the instrumental solo imo. I like the opening to inner flight a lot. This song is so relaxing. Come together is another nice song. Not a lot going on lyrically but good drums, keys and guitar. Production on loaded is so sick. Sounds like a mid 90s jayz beat. Awesome piano too. Damaged is the best written so far. This is a really nice ballad. Good guitar on this one too. Nice horns and vocals on I’m coming down. Good drums again. Weird solo tho. Not sure how I feel about that. Nice fade into higher than the sun. First couple mins are nothingness. Last couple mins are different nothingness. Not a fan of this one. Classic electronic junk. I expected this to be the whole album. Cool sounds tho, just way too repetitive. Shine like stars was fine, lackluster closing song. Overall, good not great. Slightly above JAA. A lot of cool beats, not much going on lyrically. 2.9/5 stars.
Pretty good!
Vettefan.
Not really my type of music but I can appreciate the craft. Rating: 3/10
Love this album front to back. A true British banger
Surprisingly great
Geggjuð plata. Flottir hittarar og hitt er bara skemmtilegt. Iconic plötuumslag og feitt bara overall.
Stökkva lóðbeint í housið og gera það vel. Movin on up og Loaded algjörir bangerar, en ég er ekki frá því að platan sem við fengum um daginn þar sem Mani var mættur hafi verið betri í heild.
