Reviews (page 3 of 8)

Really interesting album, liked the first half a lot, second half faded. Ahead of its time for sure

One thing I’ve had to learn over the course of this listening project? The difference between “this is inoffensive/I appreciate the effort” and “I genuinely would enjoy listening to this in my free time”. I get the appeal of this but there were a couple of songs (Don’t Fight It, Feel It and I’m Comin’ Down) where the sounds just…did whatever the opposite of scratching the itch in my brain is. I’d be vibing and then it would immediately stop haha. Still. I enjoyed most of this one! The tracks I saved I REALLY liked, especially Higher Than the Sun.

Music to groove to or zone out to. This is just some solid house music to enjoy; it can be actively listened to or thrown on in the background and each experience will be rewarding in its own way. "Come Together" into "Loaded" is a great two-song combo square in the middle of the album. Solid all the way through.

Never judge a book by its cover... This group sounds nothing like the name would suggest. Very enjoyable. Pairs well with blowing glass or ketamine.

Every conceivable 90s genre you can think of, which means that there’s something for everyone but it’s very much a time capsule. Loaded is excellent.

This was another pleasant surprise of a discovery. It was not what I expected from a name like primal scream and I quite liked it.

Great album

Loved this at the time. Feels a little dated listening now. Still like the psychedelic pop vibe but the lyrics feel a bit amateur

I love the grooves, the sounds and the production of this album is phenomenal. I'm not so keen on the lead vocalist - he sounds a bit off key at times. And being a hybrid dance album, the tracks tend to be repetitive and overlong. There's a sense that you had to be there to really appreciate it. But all the gripes aside, it is a good album.

Haven’t listened to this in ages. Still sounds great

Pleasantly surprised

I remember everyone raving about this acid-house album back when it first dropped, but something about it made me steer clear. I think I was a little put off by the two big hits, as they sounded a bit formulaic. Somehow, I never got around to listening to the entire album, so this was almost all new material for me. It instantly reminded me of a few other bands, Happy Mondays in parts, some of the more gospel-inspired tracks by Spacemen 3 in others. It feels like the sort of album that would be good to have on in the background, as it's inoffensive and never in your face. It's better than I expected, but not great enough for 5 stars.

It’s an interesting mix of sounds and pretty decent throughout. It’s kind of amazing that it came out in 91, it feels a lot more recent on some of the tracks. I didn’t hear anything that really blew my mind though. It’s also way too long.

Great album of early grunge Forgot how good they were. Need to go back and have another listen.

I don't what I expected this album to be, BUT IT'S HOUSE MUSIC! Some of the song are mid but overall it's a good album. Definitely definitely have some of these songs saved in playlist.

very summery

This was a pleasant surprise

Interesting, some smashing pumpkins and Radiohead vibes, but most songs were too long or repetitive

Interesting mix of genres

Excellent album, very joyful

It's good

I liked this album, some great tracks on it

"Moving on up" got things going--but then we land in a sort of Groove Armada meets Ravi Shankar dimension with "Slip Inside This House." Settles down into funky music to work by (a little too repetitive) with the next few tracks. Picks up again with "Come Together" and did I hear "Suspicious Minds" in there? "Loaded" recalls the Stones; "I'm Coming Down" reminds me of Jesus and Mary Chain. Then, unfortunately, they get back in their rave lane with "Higher than the Sun" and the last track doesn't impress. Interesting album which could have been a great one had a few tracks been cut. Still, there are some great songs here.

Best album Andy Weatherall ever made. Tbh it's very much of its time, but tracks like Come Together, Loaded and Movin on up are classics. Has become a bit of a 'put on in the background' listen, but still holds up

Not being at all familiar with this band or album, I wasn't sure what to expect here from a band named Primal Scream, and the unexpected is exactly what I got. Screamadelica is an audio cornucopia of an album, it's overflowing with an assortment of different offerings and song styles. I hear some Poi Dog Pondering, and Blur, and Elbow, and my wife Gina heard Talking Heads at the beginning of "Come Together" I really liked the opener "Movin on Up" quite a bit. "Inner Flight" would fit right in on an updated house music version of Pet Sounds, and it also has an organ riff that Counting Crows seem to have borrowed for "Catapult" a few years later. Some of it is a bit too electronica and dancey and repetitive for my tastes but I didn't find any of it unlistenable and enjoyed quite a bit of it. It's a really solid album and I am glad that it came up as my assignment today, it's not something I would ever have chosen or come across otherwise.

I will now sell three copies of The Beta Bands Three EPs. Im gonna get in my time machine and seed Primal Scream more heavily on Chicagoland radio in the mid-80s and early 90s. Illicit discos will take over backyard punk shows. Buttondown polyester florals will replace hand-me-down bowling shirts. Smashing Pumpkins will lean into 70s light rock and The Bee-Gees earlier, becoming as much of an influence beloved bonehead 70s rock. A new festival circuit begins a solid decade before the Millennial revival.

5 stjärnor på rätt fest, men idag kändes det inte så angeläget

Considering this was a mix of genres and not being super impressed by the band’s first album I got here(Vanishing Point), I wasn’t so sure about this album. But after going through it, it was pretty good. I will say that it wears itself thin near the end, as most hour long albums do. And I’m not completely sold on the gospel aspects of the album, which means I wasn’t really a fan of Movin’ On Up. That song’s a bit too upbeat to me. But past that, most of Screamadelia was very good. The production is excellent for 1991. Frankly, I would have expected this to be later in the decade. Also, most of the songs are straight bops. They carry a nice beat to them, which is good considering that most of the songs are over 5 minutes. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the last third kind of crashing out, I would have a lot more high praise for this album. Really, it makes the score more of a 3.5, but the good outweighs the bad for this album. Favorite track: Don’t Fight It, Feel It Other hits: Slip Inside This House, Higher Than The Sun (the Singles Mix), Come Together, Inner Flight

Unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I prefer the jangly pop perfection of Primal Scream's first clutch of singles (and B-sides) to anything they did thereafter. It's clear to see how Screamadelica put them on the map though, and it is a better album than their first two attempts, which frustratingly failed to capture the C86-era magic the related run of 7-inches promised. While they were not unique in ditching a more traditional indie sound to embrace dance culture in the late 80s, nor where they the first to do so, Primal Scream did have an interesting approach that put them ahead of the curve. Rather than putting all their eggs in one basket and "reinventing themselves" wholesale, they essentially let acid house DJ Andrew Weatherall remix their material as part of the production process and put that out as the album proper. The result had the best of both worlds, the organic authenticity of a traditional band set up somehow absorbed into the psyched-out acid beats of the era, while, as a result, Scream themselves were more easily able to adapt as the 90s progressed. It's not quite perfect (some tracks do outstay their welcome just a tad), but it's as good a document of its time as any record could hope to be.

You know it is somehow a good album when you can tell that you hate half of the tracks but absolutely love the rest. i like it that there's always some weird stuffs going on there somewhere. I don't favor some sound choices they made, but they are arranged nicely. Very enjoyable (at least half of the album is). Higher Than the Sun is absolutely a great song. Definitely Above 4/5.

Kind of got to respect it when a band takes a load of drugs and makes something so different to the rest of their catalogue. A lot of this doesn’t work but when it does it’s great

I remember when I was 14 years old and I thought this to be one of the superior albums of the 90s. Boy, I was wrong. Still a great album nonetheless, but the "baggy/Madchester" gimmick does not last for the whole album. I still had fun revisiting it, though.

Rating: 7.5/10 Versatile, interesting, dance-y, and fun.

No notes

Not what I expected at all, Moving on Up is bait to a totally different album and then all of a sudden you've got an acid album on your hands. But I enjoyed quite a few songs. 4* for the bravery.

This album cover is like the banana on Velvet Underground and Dark Side of the Moon. I had seen it a ton but never listened to it. This album is fantastic, a perfect blend of alt rock and electronic/house keeping the interest of rock with the new textures of the emergent electronic scene.

One of those albums that caught the zeitgeist of its time. The bands Beggars Banquet in some respects but also featuring some of the electronic sensibilities of late 80’s / 90’s. Has a place on the list

Love it. Want to spend more time with this album.

Albumi #171, 10.03.2025 Skottilaisen Primal Screamin kolmas ja varmaankin tunnetuin albumi julkaistiin vuonna 1991. Mainio albumi, jossa Primal Screamin aiempaan indierockiin on otettu vahvasti vaikutteita acid-house-skenestä. Erityismaininta nykyään jo edesmenneen Paul Cannellin LSD-päissään suunnittelemalle kansitaiteelle.

Loved this one before the project. I honestly don't even know what to say about it, but I associate Screamadelica with summer - headphones on, eyes closed, laying in the sun - and it makes me happy. High 4.

Let's set aside the illusion that we are writing these reviews for anyone other than ourselves. If other people read them, fine, but this whole project is about us sharing our exploration of these records. Well, Malachy, with Screamadelica, we've already been there. I have a very vivid memory of you talking me through the whole album in the old Waterstones, before it burned down. It must have been late '98 or early '99. Paul was there, but I don't think he was listening. You retold the record like you would retell the plot of a genre-bending film. "It opens on an acoustic... then bam! It's gospel... you think it's going this way, but, no, it's that way... it's house... it's rave... then horns... but you're not expecting the country ballad." No album could live up to that and Screamadelica didn't. Not initially and not entirely. I did try to get Peter Barronwell to follow me into the Orb's of Higher Than The Sun, but it was too much for him. Your approach was the better one of course, as the album is experiential - it must be taken as a whole and it is the swerves and dips that keep you going. All the songs are very long, but none feel that long, because you are riding a wave. I presume it is supposed to describe the experience of taking ecstacy, but I wouldn't know much about that. This saves me having to do so anyway. I don't feel that I ever need to, knowing Screamadelica is here. It's like experiencing a rave through a VR headset. That it is the work of multiple different producers feels wrong - surely it was masterminded by Andrew Wetherall. Anyway, I have come to enjoy the album a lot (probably after Exterminator sweetened me on the band) even when it sounds like new age music, even when Bobby Gillespie sings vague hedonist good vibe bromides that would make Noel Gallagher cringe, and especially when Bobby Gillespie isn't singing - not true; Higher Than The Sun is the best. It loses its potency after Loaded. That's probably just the nature of the comedown, so maybe it needs to be there. Our last 4 star album was Debut, which is a collection of great songs. Not all the songs here may be so good, but it is as good, if not better as a record, an experience. Though never quite as good as your 5 star retelling of it, putting paid to the lie about dancing about architecture. 4 I loved listening to this today. How brilliantly stupid is this album. Five minutes into ‘loaded’ when Bobby Gillespie, presumably referring to the recent reentry of the horns, suddenly yells ‘AH YEEAA AAHH’ I always chuckle. He only does it once and he doesn’t do too much else in the 7 minutes. It’s a moment both ridiculous and sublime. That is Screamadelica in a nutshell. It has two paragons of concision worthy of any of pop’s music’s best writers - Movin’ on Up and Higher than the Sun each packing 10 minutes of musical action into about 3 1/2 minutes. It also has ‘Come Together’ and ‘loaded’ which pack about 2 minutes of musical action into 10 minutes and 7 minutes respectively. Those tracks are also, somehow, perfectly crafted. Come Together is, I reckon, one of the quickest 10 minutes in pop music despite having so much of that stupid squeaky rubber duck-sounding keyboard in it. What a stupid idea. What a brilliant idea. Slip Inside This House is an inspired reimagining. Inner Flight, this album’s heart and the sound of the album’s cover artwork in my head anyway, has a naive, wild beauty worthy of Eno/Bowie. Damaged is lovely and worthy of the band it rips off. The saxophone solo on I’m Coming Down….Ridiculous. Sublime. I hate Don’t Fight it, Feel it. It’s 7 minutes long. I am utterly indifferent to the ludicrously titled ‘Higher than the Sun (a Dub Symphony in Two Parts)’. It’s 7 minutes long. Shouldn’t that be fatal to my affection for this album? I don’t know why it isn’t. It’s just more of the inexplicable from an album of quantifiably bad ideas - possibly beginning with having Bobby Gillespie as the singer - which come together to make something magical. I love Bobby Gillespie’s voice by the way. Ridiculous. 4/5

Ok, I understand why people were so into Primal Scream in the 90s.

The backup singers reminds me of xtian music. I thought there'd be more screaming xp. Reasonably melodic. The individual songs can be a bit repetetive, probably good when high, but I'm not... currently. 4/5

I thought this would be, naturally, a lot of screaming and shouting. Turned out to be one of the most interesting albums on this list. Love the idea of a rock/indie band taking on board a DJ that had never produced in a studio before, and they come up with this. Brilliant stuff, high 4* for me.

Cool and decent

This was fun to listen to but either I didn't get deep enough into it or it's just not got that extra edge

Interesting mix. Started off super strong but fell down a little after that. Still really liked it.

A band I know the name of but none of their songs. Or so I thought. I actually recognised quite a few from this album! Opening the album with Movin' On Up, what a song. I haven't heard that song in like 20 years probably, but I could sing along like I heard it yesterday! I haven't heard Loaded in a good few years either. Full of nostalgia! Enjoyable 4 ⭐️

Not listened to this one for a while. Some of the songs are great with an uplifting and euphoric feel whilst others bring you back down. A couple of tracks let things down a bit, a bit too dull. I guess this is another one of those albums that’s probably enhanced by the time of day it’s listened to and by certain substances consumed.

It’s one of those albums that really defines a time and era. I’ve always thought it really quite unique in how much freedom the band gave the producers to remix and transform it into the classic indie/dance crossover it is. I can’t really think of another time that happened, or at least been this successful/rewarding. Anyway, there’s some absolute classics tracks in here, and with a nice range of dance styles, rave, house, dub. The whole thing has such a happy psych euphoric vibe, and while it has aged a bit in some ways, it’s just as cool today as it was originally. I do love this album, however, there are a couple of filler tracks here so I can’t give it a 5 sadly. So close! (It wasn’t until years after this was released that I realised the 2nd track is a 13th Floor Elevators cover - pretty good one at that!)

3.5/5 Screamadelica begins with the fantastic, timeless Movin' On Up and the trippy, groovy Slip Inside This House. There is another great change up quickly with the funky Don't Fight It, Feel It. Higher Than the Sun is a great three minute journey, just a really unreal feeling and then Inner Flight floats slowly and beautifully. Come Together is a slow burner, but somehow works alright as a 10 minute interlude and Loaded continues the chill, lengthy vibe, but maybe too chill. Damaged is a delicately written and performed folky number, and I'm Comin' Down succeeds as being trippy and weird, but perhaps not as being very good. I don't have many positive things to say about the first part of Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts), if at all. Somehow both boring and annoying. Then the second part is alright, but just a bit empty, maybe needing vocals. Finally Shine Like Stars finishes us off with a decent ballad. This album is varied, with some fantastic songs, but ultimately front-loaded (no pun intended) and a bit long. Movin' on Up 5/5 (FAV) Slip Inside This House 5/5 Don't Fight It, Feel It 4.5/5 Higher Than the Sun 5/5 Inner Flight 4.5/5 Come Together 3.5/5 Loaded 3.5/5 Damaged 3.5/5 I'm Comin' Down 2.5/5 Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts) 2/5 (LEAST FAV) Shine Like Stars 4.5/5

The more I listened to it the more I just kept loving this album. It's weird, it's unique, it's got a lot of variety, and it just slaps. Favorites were Movin On Up, Don't Fight It, Feel It, Loaded, and Damaged.

I liked this much more than the other Primal Scream album I listened to before. The album cover is really great showing the hazy brightness present in the music. I also feel like this earns this length unlike many other 90’s albums. Favorite songs were Moving On Up, Higher Than The Sun, Come Together, and Loaded.

For this one, Don’t Fight It, Feel It. You’ll feel Loaded afterwards.

name is misleading

above average for me

Bangin'

Listened to this album before.... Not quite my thing, but equally I can tell that it's a very good example of what it is. Think these guys might have taken a drug or 2 during the process of making this. There was a period in my life when I'm sure this would've been way more up my street. Moving on up, Come together, and loaded are pretty iconic 3.5, but I think it's worthy of a 4

First song "Movin' on up" = awesome. Hand claps, gospel chorus, jamming guitar, uplifting lyrics - I love it. I really like this whole album; I listened to it 3 times in a row.

The alt/rock/dance vibes of this album are great. I can definitely hear how this could have influenced 90s bands like Blur and The Eels namely.

Enjoyed this more than expected. Feels like if britpop met Acid House

Movin' on Up kicks things off on a bright note reminiscent of Sympathy for the Devil. Something in that combination of hand-percussion + choir + keys + vocal delivery. Fine enough intro, although I feel like it is a bit of an outlier relative to the rest of the album. Slip Inside This House is cool as shit. Love the wompy bass tying this whole thing together. Don't Fight It, Feel It also is that good kush. The trilly whistle that forms the repeating melody along with deep cyclical bassline work great together to form a bright, but dirty foundation for everything else that is intermixed. Definitely have heard I'm Comin' Down before -- or at least elements within. Feel like it might have been in a James Blake boiler room or something. In any case, this song jams. Love the saxophone work and completely relaxed vibe. Shine Like Stars is a fine way to end the album. Bright and pretty. I enjoyed this album quite a bit and will definitely be back. I only vaguely remember the other album we had from Primal Scream on this list, but from what I remember this one is significantly brighter in overall tone. Still psych-laden electro alt-rock that I can get down with. Solid 4 / 5

This album is not what I was expecting. It fell a bit into the background, but it was more alternative/classic than I was expecting. Maybe a 3.5, but this warrants a re-listen so if I give it a 4 it'll show up again

This Primal Scream band is very cool I have really liked both of the albums that have come up. Very unique sound with some rock and psychadelic mix. Didn't pay attention to song title names because I was cooking while listening. But overall album was very good. This is a very solid 4

Fuck yeah I loved the last Primal Scream album. Still listen to it occasionally. This is wild just 3 songs in. Like a mixture of a bunch of genres all at once. Hard to pinpoint it but it's groovy and certainly interesting. I feel like a ton of songs start out like a choir singing and then just bounce into something completely random from that. Loaded fucking rules. What a jam of a song. That was fun. Liked Vanishing Point a bit more but still very solid.

Started off loving this but it quickly faded into the background. But I think it’s because I was too busy and overtired to give it my full attention, not that it was boring. Will need to revisit this album but rating 4/5 for today

Iconic! So many classics. Varied and fun. Only on song I really didn't like. Loved the change in pace. Good stuff

Really good groovy album. Loaded is obviously an absolute banger. Sort of track you can guarantee an aging DJ will be playing somewhere at a festival at any one time.

As Peter Fonda said in The Wild Angels "Well, we wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do and we wanna get loaded and we wanna have a good time... And that's what we're gonna do. We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party." This album soundtracks that party.

I enjoyed Primal Scream's mixing of genres. A couple songs were quite good.

J'ai malheureusement pas eux le temps de le finir, mais je peux affirmer que c'est un très bon album qui mérite moult réécoute.

Way better than I expected

Listened to this on an exceptionally strong pill one night, whilst sitting in a half built bar and it was a revelation. Been a firm favourite ever since

I didn't even know these were by the same artist, let alone the same album. I'm not even sure what genre this is; trip hop? Love it. 1991 was a bit of a year!

Don't know what genre it is but I like it

7/10. The first half of the album is great, but the album wears off over time. :)

Iconic cover - looking back now now over 30 years ago the sound was part of the whole time. Still good to listen to now though.

Gran producción de un grupo muy interesante y variado. Este es uno de sus mejores discos.

I really liked this album!

Ok this is one that took a bit of time for me, but it started to grow on me a lot during a relisten. Here's what I wrote after the first listen: This is another album where I felt the highs were really high, and the lows were quite low. It is also pretty much entirely about drugs, so I'm sure the highs were high for them too. This starts incredibly hot, "Movin' on Up" is one of the catchier songs that I've heard in quite a while. It's also very much on the alt-rock side of the spectrum for this album (there's a guitar solo in the middle). The album is really more of an electronic-dance album more than an alt-rock album, but it's a pretty diverse sound throughout. Nothing quite reaches "Movin' on Up" again, which is a bit disappointing, but there's still plenty of other good songs on here. There's a really strong stretch in the middle of the album, in particular "Come Together", "Loaded", and "Damaged" back-to-back-to-back. "Come Together" gets an asterisk because the original album version isn't available on Spotify, so I listened to the Terry Farley remix (which seems to be the single that was released in the US, and also seems to be the more popular version). Anyway, it's great, a really great upbeat vibe. "Loaded" is solid too, and then "Damaged" totally slows it down with this totally sad little love song out of nowhere. A really solid stretch here. The end of the album was a little weak for me, but it leaned a bit more into the dance vibe which is less of my thing. I'm not quite sure what to make of this honestly. It didn't totally blow me away, but there was definitely some really interesting stuff on here and I definitely liked it a lot more than most of the electronic-heavy music that I've listened to. This album was the first Mercury Prize winner and seems to have pretty universal critical acclaim, but this is also a genre where I tend to struggle a bit. The genre isn't quite the same, but it reminds me a bit of the Super Furry Animals album that I got fairly recently. A few really standout songs, and then a big range of songs that were a bit hit-or-miss otherwise. Side note, but I really like the album cover, I would buy this just for the album art. Now back to the present. I basically still feel the same way, but I think the lows are not quite as bad as I first thought, and the highs are still really good. I'm into this a lot, it's super unique, has a really good mix of songs, and a few top tier tracks. I saw a pristine copy of this browsing at a record store last night for $60. Passed on it for Dire Straits debut album, but feel like maybe I missed out. Favorite song: Movin' on Up Other: Higher Than the Sun, Inner Flight, Come Together, Loaded, Damaged, I'm Coming Down, Shine Like Stars 10/1/24

This is all over the place, but not entirely in a bad way. A lot of really good stuff here, although in some cases it feels like it’s wandering around aimlessly. Will def listen again.

Some strong tracks, but some kinda boring ones too. Very very 90s. Who is the saxophone player on "I'm Comin' Down?" I liked that solo.

This is a very unique album, blending early 90s indie rock with Neo Psychedelia and late 80s/early 90s UK-style acid house. With my background in electronic and dance music, I really appreciate how they tapped into the culture of the house movement, using production techniques, samples, basslines, and sounds that capture the essence of that era. It’s something that people like me can easily recognize and connect with. At the same time, they strike a great balance by giving alternative rock and Neo Psychedelia their fair share of the spotlight. However, the downfall of the album is that while they found a good balance between all the different styles, it lacks the smoothness and cohesiveness that could’ve made it even better. At times, it feels like the layers don’t blend and match as seamlessly as they should have. Still, with Andrew Weatherall on the album production, the album remains culturally and historically significant.

How do you even explain this one to a first time listener. It definitely sounds and feels like some euphoric drug trance.

Screamadelica is the third studio album by Primal Scream, originally released in 1991. I have always seen this album on lists of the best psychedelic records. I was excited to listen to this, thinking it would be more along the lines of Brian Jonestown Massacre, but this ended up being way different. This album is way more electronic-based than what I was expecting. I really dig it tho! Their cover of Slip Inside This House is super cool and the whole album just has this swampy psychedelic vibe to it. The record leans heavily into Acid House which isn't a genre I'm particularly familiar with but it just works on here. Will listen again.

I had to laugh at what my brain conjured up when I heard 'Primal Scream' vs the bright piano of the opening Rolling Stones-meets-George Michael opening track. It's an absolute delight. What a unique and interesting album. 'Cohesive' might be a stretch but it's certainly fun and varied. Probably more of a 3.5, but it's almost bizarre stylistic shifts put me in a good mood and I'm rounding up accordingly.

trippy happy shit, best priem

A little long, but overall pretty good.

Tää on kyllä hyvä pläjäys! Sopivasti vähän kaiken rajalla! 4/5

Kiinnostava yhdistelmä rockia ja elektronista musiikkia, 4/5

Sweet vibe

The title of this needs to be reworked. "Primal Scream...?" C'mon. I fell asleep to this album. But it was a nice rest. So extra star for allowing me to take a Saturday afternoon snoozer.

Love it!

In my best Austin Powers voice: "Screamadelic baby"

Very gentle!!

a genuinely cool and interesting album mixing electronic and acoustic elements

Interesting mix of styles

Some seriously groovy cuts on this

I don't know what I expected, but it certainly wasn't this. I can't think of the last time I heard a sitar in Western music. There's a lot more range than I expected because \"Don't Fight it, Feel it\" is totally different from \"Slip Inside This House.\" That being said, I still see the similarities and it's a pretty natural transition in genre. It was good, but I can't say that I'll choose to listen to it again. I'll probably accidentally find this in a few years and maybe I'll LOVE it then.

nun ja, hat von vielem eniges - ein bunter blumenstrauss von riffs, beats und melodiefragmenten treibt auf dem weiten bassteppich mal hier, mal dorthin.

Gets better on a relisten, but not sure it’s all that cohesive. What it is though, is dreamy and interesting, sprawling and bloated, sometimes euphoric, with a big, cavernous dubby sound. ‘Screamedlica’ is a quintessential fusion of early 90s UK rock, pop, dance and rave. 3.5/5, but rounding up to a 4.

Weird little album - er 90s. Fluctuated between Rolling Stone to more funky electronic. I really enjoyed it.

Classic

Absolute classic! Best tracks are Movin On Up, Don’t Fight It, Feel It, Higher Than The Sun, Come Together and Loaded 4/5

Eclectic, inspiring, and tantalizing. It was hard to predict what any track on this would sound like, there's a large range of influences present in this album that are mixed together very well for most songs. Some of the songs I found to be slightly too long or repetitive, but for the most part, it was easy to tune in and get lost in the music.

Schysst platta.

This is a really fun album, especially now that it's my second listen. I definitely have much more of an appreciation for it. However, Movin' On Up still sounds exactly like Love The One You're With to me

More 90s electronic (ish?). This was a good mix of a bunch of different styles. Some tracks were like the Deee-Lite album that was also on this list but more fleshed out. Others were more in the Fatboy Slim/Chemical Brothers mold with hypnotizing beats and chopped up samples. Still others sounded almost like an Oasis ballad. Only some tracks really stood out on their own as good songs, so I’ll give it a light 4

Pretty cool album! Some nice tunes in here, a bit funky at times, very British on other songs, reminded me of a hybrid of Oasis and Talking Head for some reason. And I think that's good enough to give it a pretty strong 4.

It still sounds good and I remember when this was released!

Wasn't sure what to expect (screaming?) but it was fairly well done with some interesting sounds.

this album was my first proper introduction to the psychedelia genre. i never really planned on getting into the genre since i find no reason to translate the feelings of being under the influence into musical terms, seemed a bit bummy to me. but i will admit that my illogical prejudice was hindering me from experiencing some of the most interesting music i've heard in awhile. screamadelica is very unique album in the way it uses unusual and just straight up weird sounds in order to create a vast array feelings that one would experience during euphoria. movin on up was a complete 180 from what my expectations were. i was anticipating a standard indie rock album but instead i was greeted with a lively gospel-esque track. it had an infectious, feel good vibe to it, with vibrant piano chords and a spectacular guitar riff performance later on in the track. this atmosphere carried on into the next track. i got a talking heads vibe from this one and an almost arab influence from a certain instrument used in the beginning - idk the name of it but if you listen, you'll understand what i mean. the psychedelia on here is very strong, from the lyrics that just talk about a desire to get high from the stupid bongo drums that are played in the background. its a well done song that really does work. the vibe shifts into a more dance type of thing. don't fight it, feel it is a strange one but a goodie. there's a lot of weird sounds on here, particularly the squeak effect that is continuously repeated. but it works somehow. the vocals son here are good but it's clear the instrumental the main focus here. it feels similar to a 90s club song, i'd defo get turnt up to this LMAO moving on, higher than the sun is where the album calms down a bit. it still has the same themes of getting high but more mellowed out. inner flight plays after this and carries the same vibe. i liked the woodwind instrument at the beginning, as well as the keyboard (?) notes that keep repeating throughout. there's another woodwind instrument that reminded me of inhaling the smoke from a joint haha! it's a strange instrumental but i don't hate it at all. the album picks back up again on come together; hooray the organ is back! i really wished i could've figured what the bubbly instrument was because it was my favourite thing on the whole track. everything reminded me of staring up at the sky on a hot, sunny day and tripping balls off of an acid tab - i think i mainly got this feeling from the kazoo like instruments that were playing in this song. i also think this song was REALLY ahead for it's time, some elements sounded like they were straight from a 2000s/10s UK club song that you hear on the radio. reaching the end of the album, things got a lot more simpler. loaded has an easy going feel with its drums and simplistic piano keys. the brass usage definitely gave this song a certain edge, however! i also found the guitar reverb to be a really nice touch. damaged was another normal sounding track. it's very simplistic in nature and had really well written lyrics about losing a relationship so good it leaves you broken - "i got too possessive, but souls ain't for stealing". but i was a bit perplexed on why it was on the album. it didn't really fit the flow of this project and felt like it was interrupting the tracklist. not a bad song but it just didn't belong in my opinion. the flow was reintroduced in the next song thankfully. im comin down feels exactly like its title but in a more somber sense than a violent one, even though it discusses feelings of being hungover and tired, etc. it's a very gradual track. umm i dont care about higher than the sun part 2, stinky song. i liked shine like stars though! i was really pleased with this record! i think it definitely evokes a lot of emotions and feels like you're getting high LMFAO. it's a beautifully unique album and very crafty with its methods. i didn't enjoy every song and there's definitely some throwaways on here but when it's good, it's really good!

Did NOT expect to enjoy this so much. What a blast.

It was a very interesting album. never heard anything like it before.

Out of all the supposedly "essential" albums that were released in Britain at the start of the nineties, this is clearly the most bizarre one, and its critical and commercial success therefore looks more than a little dumbfounding today. A topsy-turvy mix of late 60s / early 70s Rolling Stones rock 'n roll (lively opener "Movin' On Up", ballad "Damaged") and contemporary dance music shenanigans, obviously sounding quite dated in 2024 ("Loaded", as remixed by Andrew Weatherall, that weird cover of The 13th Floor Elevators' "Slip Inside The House"...). Plus some chill-out electronic instrumentals or near-instrumentals that add to the druggy mood ("Inner Flight", "I'm Comin' Down"). Because drug consumption and late nights out had to play a huge part in this hype, didn't they? This may explain why this record neither rhymes nor reasons, as endearing as it may be for some souls nostalgic of their now faraway youth. That strange mix of genres comes off as more "integrated" and streamlined in the "Loaded" track than it is in the rest of the LP, fortunately, and it's also the case on the 10-minute epic "Come Together", by the way. Those cuts admittedly still sound like music I'd hear in the dressing room at Express or H&M. Yet I'm sure that in the early 90s, it was very cool, at least. And I would lie if I said playing this record from front to back didn't set a quite pleasant mood in my living room. A somewhat contrived one, but nothing that was overly obnoxious. Oh, and "Higher Than The Sun" is a very cinematic gem. It's the sort of trippy track that aged far better than the rest, and its inclusion almost singlehandedly warrants a place for *Screamadelica* in my own list (by a hair's breadth). Guess it's nice that I have at least *one* album like that on my shelves. But it's all I ever need when it comes to dated MDMA and ecstasy-fuelled artistic achievements in the larger field of "rock" music. In case you haven't noticed, this "review" up there is actually a collage of different people's takes on this app I agreed with (here "remixed" a little). If Bobby Gillespie and co. can get away with a somewhat nonsensical patchwork of different styles and "sounds", so can I. 3.5 for the purposes of this list, rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 for more general purposes (5+3.5). Number of albums left to review: 217 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 342 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 199 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 251

Feels good, just kinda washes over you.

It’s a weird album that I never fully got into at the time as all that stuff was diametrically opposed to my rock sensibilities at the time - obv then I went to college and the drugs kicked in :) Still an album of highs and lows as it gets a bit lost in the “we have samplers” of the late 80’s house music scene but is certainly an album that defined a decade in how it managed to blend house, rock and gospel.

4 - This is really a great album, I think most of my issue's is that some songs are just a little long. But where the hell does damaged come from!? It's such a stunning song and so different to the whole album. But yeah not sure, thought I was going to like it more and still love damaged

"Screamadelica" is the third album from Scottish rock band by Primal Scream. The album was a departure from the indie rock sound of their two previous albums to music inspired by the house music scene and drugs, specifically LSD and MDMA. The majority of the production was handled by acid house DJ Andrew Weatherall and engineer Hugo Nicolson who remixed original recordings into dance-oriented songs. Commercially, the album hit #8 in the UK and, critically, received wide praise and won the 1992 Mercury Prize. The album opens with "Movin' on Up," a song that I remember being played in the US. Jangly guitar, piano and a beat. A gospel choir gives this a soulful vibe. Very optimistic and spiritual. A lot goes into this song and it works. We get the busy-ness again which also works in "Don't Fight it, Feel it." A great groove with percussion. Weird synth sounds including birds chirping. Denise Johnson on lead vocals. This sounds like it was DJ produced. The Orb produced "Higher then the Sun." And by the title you can imagine where this goes. It's dreamy, druggy and a slower beat. Churing synth sounds. Lead singer Bobby Gillespie's lyrics and vocals fit in perfectly. Midway through the album we come to their big songs which are very much extended. A gospel choir with a piano begins "Come Together." An acid house dance beat. There's horns and guitar giving it a soulful vibe. He's preaching peace. "Loaded" continues with a gospel choir and horn section and a slower groove. Piano, slide guitar and spoken word samples from "The Wild Angels." This is another good song . A slower song that's worth mentioning is "Damaged." Acoustic guitar and piano in this ballad. It's a love song and he got damaged when she left. There's a lot going on in this album which makes it a very interesting listen. Soulful, dance-oriented, acid house, gospel, dreamy, ballad. Definitely fusions of these musical styles. There's timely and detailed production with the added instruments. The extended dance songs work really well. There's other long songs which could have been trimmed down or eliminated. Sometimes the druggy, pyschedelic songs didn't work. But, overall there's a lot here to really like and one I recommend.

Great indie/ dance album. One of the best made in the 90's

Not at all what I expected with the name of the artist and album! Dare I say this has U2 Zooropa vibes? It is electronic, instrumental, dreamy, and bouncy all at once. Is this rave music? No? Well it should be.

# Playlist track - Movin' on Up # Notes - Album was brand new to me. - Love/hate the cover. - Weird moments like "Don't fight it, feel it" shake up the listening experience but don't annoy too much. Well done. - Come Together could have been a great song, but the intro is waaay to long. - Interesting listen, great flow, will definitely come back to it. 5/7. # Links

I mostly enjoyed this.

1992 - the first Mercury Music Prize… my friend at work dragged me out one lunchtime to the betting shop and bet that Primal Scream would win the prize. I’d never even heard the album but she encouraged me to listen so by the time they won (and Friend picked up her winnings) I’d listened to it and loved it. It just felt so different and you could dance to it and sing along. It was an immersive experience. I probably haven’t listened to it all the way through in 30 years but it’s still great.

Wholly satisfying.

Did not know I was such a big fan!

pa estar full chilling d locos

Started off strong but started to lull as it went along, overall though I’d listen again. Some cool vibes throughout. Was an interesting walking album considering how to flow of the album went on.

One of those bands I have heard of mentioned and referenced but never listened too. Bouncy positive first song. Very different song number 2. These guys are from the UK and the 91 shows a lot of influence that goes into that era. Electronic beats, Indian instrumentals, reminds me of the Bristol sound and related movements. Wide breadth of musical styles on one album. Definitely digging it. Yeah going to definitely listen to more of these guys. Definitely talented. Broad range of style. Me gusta.

Edgar Wright?

Reminded me of hackers. I like hackers

What a strange album. These guys just played whatever they felt like playing at the time, which is pretty cool. It was definitely interesting to listen to. Why?

Never heard of this group, but WOW! A little pop, a little rock, a little jazz, a little R&B, a little synth. Very interesting. Unfortunately, when I to chose to listen to it on YouTube, four of the 11 songs were listed as "unavailable."

Bought this when it came out. It's a strange experimental mix that just works. I thought it would possibly date but it still works. Strong.

Knowing this album has "Loaded" on it is enough to be excited for March 21st, 2024 HL: "Loaded", "Come Together", "I'm Coming Down", "Movin' On Up" I can't hear "Inner Flight" without thinking of the RuneScape theme, nor can I hear "I'm Coming Down" without imagining the Old School RuneScape woodcutting sound effect in the background. Not a complaint of the songs, but I am complaining that that game has ruined my brain. Big dumb fun- but also big smart fun sometimes, in the layering and fusion of disparate sounds and grooves. In terms of the Madchester-related albums this list champions, this well may be my favourite- even though they're a Glasgow band, not from Manchester! :0 But it's also possibly overlong, with two "Reach for the Sun"s, neither of which I'm super crazy about. Will definitely keep this album around my (digital) library; it may be a five-star one day.

Saw these guys open for Depeche mode in the '90s. This album is burned on my consciousness.

This is a work of near-genius but not necessarily from the obvious source. Without Andrew Weatherall at the controls, I suspect Primal Scream themselves would have come up with a third of an album worth of forgettable, Black-Crowes-Lite/Texas jams. Even as it is, the material is stretched a bit thin but at least AW makes it feel like a reasonably interesting collection of 12" dubs. It's a justified spaced-out classic; once you get onto that trip, you're in for the duration.

Very fun and vibey. Doesn't ask a lot of listeners

dosta dobrih

I love the blend of the dancier grooves, psychedelic guitars and gospel vocals. It makes for an interesting pallet I haven’t heard before. I think while some of the songs haven’t aged as gracefully as others I can see the influence this had on the 90s house scene as well as indie. Super fun record I think it will get better the more I listen. 4/5

This album is such a jam. Love all the different genres combined! I do need more listens with it, because there's so much going on. But on first listen it clicked immensely! Standout Tracks: Movin' On Up, Don't Fight It, Feel It, Higher Than The Sun (Higher Than The Orb Mix), Come Together, Loaded, Damaged, Shine Like Stars 8,5 out of 10

Interesting! Here are some clear Rolling Stone influences, then we'll toss in some kinda trance, not quite dance, and a hint of house while we also roll out some gospel from time to time. Pretty cool. I enjoyed it, even though I suspect I will not think to go back and listen again because its outside my usual range of rock, blues and jazz. 3.5 stars rounded up to four because why not?

An album called Screamadelica by Primal Scream I assumed was definitely going to be a metal album, and was pleasantly surprised. What an honor to have won the first Mercury Prize. So many bands past and future can be heard in this and it's wild to think how this fallen to the wayside a bit itself while influencing so many

8/10 - 4/5 Sounds like the Stones, Radiohead, U2, Bjork (vaguely instrumentally), hip hop, horns, violin, slide guitar. Amazing creativity, doesn't sound derivative. Unfortunately falls off and feels less experimental towards the last 3rd.

K between this and the Dracula guys up the list, gotta have a stern conversation with 90s groups about what in fuck they think "screaming" is, because this is not screaming, it's pretty good psych jamming

What a joy. Awesome playful audio, sonorous vocals, clever mixes and a superb fun attitude. I'm walking t lo work and just so enjoying this music. It would be good for gym and headphones and listening reflective moments around the garden. Fabulous. A new favourite. Is it 5, it almost could be. Let's see if it's high rotate in 12 months. Solid solid 4.

Cool early '90s indie electronic music - I've read the name of this band but had never listened to them, I was not expecting such chill vibes. It feels lile this is the blueprint for a lot of bands happening 30 years later, these days the blending of house beats and synth pop into indie rock has become very typical, with a little psychedelia as a treat. A lot of albums and artists are influenced by drugs, add this one to the list ("Higher Than The Sun").

Superb

Enjoyed the sound

I think it’s good. Maybe a 3.5 but the more I listen the better it gets. I can see this being a solid 4 one day

Kind of all over the place, but all good. 4 stars.

It was definitely cool didn’t love some of the songs tho

Many tricks in the bag with this one. One minute I’m hearing EMF, the next MARRS is pumping up the volume. The electronic rhythms carry the album, but don’t sleep on the Indie guitar.

That was certainly an interesting listen

Possibly Andy Weatherall's (RIP) magnum opus more so than even Primal Scream's. This record has been in my life for almost as long as I can remember. I have played it to death and don't really listen to it anymore, counterintuitively I'm less inclined to give it a 5 which feels mad. Obviously some of the production sounds a bit dated now, Slip Inside This House comes to mind, though that gets extra points for being a 13th Floor Elevators cover. Come Together however never ever gets old. Shame Bobby seems to be a bit of an arse who didn't help his bass player out.

I've not always been a big fan of Primal Scream, but this is probably them at their best.

Very strange sound but I like it.

Cool cool

Just the right level of weird. Very psychedelic. This album is a trip.

Some top tier tracks, some mediocre.

Thought this would be a hard rock album, so this was unexpected but very very welcome! I really like this one, definitely going to come back to it in the future! A spacey, groovy, pretty album, not a single song I didn't enjoy.

this album was totally different than i was expecting, i loved it so much

A fun, modern psychedelic loop-de-loop (rollercoaster isn’t quite the right word). The first two tracks are so incredibly strong that it’s almost unfair to the remainder of the album – which itself is, to be fair, also solid. Some tracks, notably Come Together, Higher Than the Sun, and Loaded, are anthem-like, paying homage to the likes of Hey Jude. Unfortunately, they’re not as good as Hey Jude, but still go on for longer. The messages of freedom, solidarity, and love are pretty clear-cut from the beginning of the songs, and I think their runtime could’ve been cut down substantially. Oddly, there seems to be a strong influence from the Beach Boys in some of these tracks. This influence is most obvious in the instrumental Inner Flight, which bears a very strong resemblance to Let’s Go Away for Awhile – albeit with more modern instrumentation and atmosphere. Also inspiration taken from the Beach Boys’ early 70s sound with I’m Comin’ Down. Good contrast between louder/”thicker” tracks (most of the album) and quieter tracks (Damaged, I’m Comin’ Down). Close to being a sonic masterpiece, but it’s just a little longer than it needs to be. Key tracks: Movin’ on Up, Slip Inside This House, Inner Flight

This one was sort of tough -- it's so different and hard to classify. It's not a genre your brain can easily latch on to. You can't quickly compare it to, say, other blues albums, because it's not a blues album. Nor a rock album. Nor jazz. Nor pop. And so on. But it's good. Very. I think that's a little hard to get at first because it's quite different, but if you sit back, relax, and let it pull you in to a warm groove, it will. I like this a lot.

Cover funny. Uh de erst song packt mich schomol. Oh sitar time (aber gschmackvolle Umgang), ich mach d beatles verantwortlich. Ah, "dont fight it.." isch eifach en house song und d keys wo ganz selte ine chömed sind richtig nice. He de bass und drums i "higher than the sun" gfallet mir. Yoo higher than the sun chunt nomol! "Shine like stars" findi biz en schwache Abschluss, mit schrägem gsang und de ewig gliche Begleitig, aber insgesamt gfallt mir s Album

This was something! Kinda banging ngl. First half sounded like someone dicking around on garage band and the second half had some really incredible instrumentation. Honestly loaded to shine like stars was some seriously beautiful shit. Never heard of these cats and don’t quite know how to classify them but want to learn more about them. And I love the cover art -B

This was a pleasant surprise. I’m not sure if I’d like their other albums but this one was lovely. 4 of 5

Not what I was expecting at all from the band name! Really enjoyed some of these tracks. Particularly Moving on up and Loaded.

halfway between rock and electronica

Just fun 90's nonsense. As the album continues it looses a little bit of the "fun" but still good stuff.

i have NEVER heard of this band before but i'm already kinda interested. let's see track 1, Movin on Up: i feel like the song would have been better without the piano, but still good. 6.5/10 track 2, Slip Inside This House: i couldn't put a reason to why but the beginning of this track makes me think of Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. in any case, the body of this song really puts the "-delica" in Screamadelica. 9/10 track 3, Don't Fight It, Feel It: well. i'm definitely Feeling It, whatever It may be. 7/10 track 4, Higher Than the Sun (Single Mix): oh the It was drugs. okay gotcha we're vibin 7/10 track 5, Inner Flight: is every song title going to be a thinly veiled drugs reference? because i'm okay if that's the case it's just really funny. 6/10 track 6, Come Together: i can only assume it is at this point that the drugs taken at the start of the album have kicked in, because i could easily see myself with a thousand-yard stare just listening to this track. 7/10 track 7, Loaded: "we wanna be loaded and have fun" extremely relatable, 7/10 track 8, Damaged: i'm sure everyone's familiar with the stages of being high - "this edible ain't anything", "oh i'm going to the moon", "let's have a great time", and now we're at "time to get extremely emotional about my life". i prefer to skip past that phase directly into "family guy unconscious pose" but there's something to be said for the introspection. 7/10 track 9, I'm Comin' Down: the title of this song is presented without comment. 8/10 track 10, Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts): the truly funniest thing might be that when typing the song title, i wrote "Sub" instead of "Dub", which goes to show my preference in anime. i had to go back to track 4 and compare that one and this one, and while there is notable difference between the two, i don't think i could put words to how. you're just gonna have to trust me on this one (or don't, i'm not your dad) 7/10 track 11: Shine Like Stars: love that accordion! a nice and calm vibe to end off the album with. 9/10 overall: 7.3/10 -> 3.51/5 and that's enough to round it up to a 4/5 for me babey! absolutely not the kind of thing i'd go out of my way to listen to but definitely worth a listen.

What a fun album. First time hearing something on this list wholly new that I want to hear more of. Don't fight it, feel it and higher than the sun are my favorite tracks on the album.

Chancers turn dancers

Classic 90s psychedelic throwback album. It is a pretty great combination of contemporary production and electronica mixed with classic 60s rock sounds. It maybe lacks the socio-political charge of that era and feels like more of a party album, but you can't deny the hooks and durability of these songs. Listened to it many times back then and have no problem queueing it up today.

Very cool album. Synth have, floating rock. The music feels really grand and spectacular.

Classic album, banged an E and rode it home

Thoroughly enjoyed this album. While never into rave culture I did really like the hypnotic quality of the sound Primal Scream achieve on Screamadelica. Can definitely hear echoes of Beach Boys, Stones, psychedelia too and the use of backing vocals particularly effective. As well as Loaded and Moving on Up, I especially liked Come Together and Inner Stars

Solid jams throughout.

Super fun fancy and upbeat. Seems like it would be fun to get incredibly high to.

Really dig this acid trip

A certified classic from the rave era. It reeks of ecstacy hugs. Songs have that pure coming up feeling and as the album winds down you'll find you do too. Best Tracks: Movin' On Up; Loaded; Damaged

Some of this album is outstanding, creative and vibrant and some of it is repetitive and annoying. I guess that’s the drug experience. High highs and low lows

Great party music! Worth the listen after never hearing them before!

Good vibes, crazy album art. Kinda dig it

Some of the acid house songs got a little long and boring, but there's lots of good stuff here.

Very chill

ay hic boyle bi album beklemiyodum super albumun ikinci yarisi o kadar iyi degil ama

Very unique genre-bending album. I had never heard of this band, but it was cool.

The sound of the 90’s absolutely a classic album.

This was pretty good. I zoned out a bit listening to it because I was working but it got my attention a few times. Gonna go with a light 4.

BEST SONGS: -Higher than the sun -Shine like stars

There's some truly great tracks in this album. Also some shonky ones. What this album did do, though, is make me want to listen to Utah Saints.

Like the Madchester

Never listened to them, but this album is outstanding

Unexpectedly pleasant. Back when I heard this in the 90's I thought this was the music that put me to sleep, but found much more in it than decades before. Must be me getting older. Or better at listening to music.

Favorite track was "Damaged".

A landmark of the Madchester movement, where Primal Scream would combine their groovy alt rock sound with the acid house movement to produce a unique mix of dance-oriented neo-psychedelic rock tracks. Prominently displays the wall of sound, featuring all sorts of strange production effects that are often subtle and barely noticeable yet enrich the whole experience. It's an immersive and fun experience with energetic high moments and low-key atmospheric moments, yet very consistent in its track ordering. Could be found a bit tiresome due to its hour-length, but I often find myself not noticing its length due to how well it hides in the background for you to dance or study to. We start off with their most famous track, the indie rock anthem "Movin on Up". It's catchy and groovy with a cool jangly guitar sound, a wailing guitar, gospel vocals, and keyboard effects. This all produces a wall of sound that excites the audience for what's to come, even though this is probably the most pop-like track. "Slip Inside the House" mixes acid house with Indian Classical Music (ICM) in a strange psychedelic twist. It's engaging and danceable. "Don't Fight It Feel It" is an energetic house track featuring gospel vocals and a groovy rock instrumentation, representing everything Madchester stands for. Doesn't come off as boring, annoying, or tiresome, capable of dancing to or sitting in the background. Has plenty of memorable moments. "Higher than the Sun" is their most psychedelic and dreamy track that becomes very techno in the second half. Probably my favorite. "Inner Flight" is a lush instrumental dream pop track full of hazy samples such as a horn instrument, choir vocals, and keyboard effects. Their longest track "Come Together" is an R&B-infused track reminding me of contemporary new jack swing, prominently incorporating a grand piano, gospel vocals, and a soft pop guitar groove. It's light, sunshiney, and catchy. Reminds me of what Rolling Stones did in Let It Bleed. "Loaded" is a downtempo dance track and their last energetic track. Some may complain for its repetition, but I really enjoyed it, especially the subtle horn and guitars and other sounds in the background. "Damaged" is a nostalgic 70s folk rock track, super nostalgic and a bit catchy. "I'm Comin Down" is a slower ambient track featuring all sorts of strange psychedelic effects and instruments, inspired by both 60s psychedelia and techno. And also features an ecstatic sax. We return to "Higher than the Sun", this time even more spacey than the more pop-orientated iteration earlier in the album. There's a cool techno transition half-way through that sounds very alien-like and robotic. I was a bit worried about how the album would end with how ambient it was getting, but "Shine Like Stars" was a pleasant pop track that remained consistent with the lush yet quiet production effects of the previous tracks. It's short, calming, and satisfying.

What a fantastic album. While some of its sound is a bit dated, it's in a good way rather than a bad way, especially when it was one of the pioneers of the sound that would be dated, if that makes sense. Ironically, I stumbled upon this album the very day the algorithm blessed with it, so I got a bit more time to digest it than usual. Despite some dips in quality, the highs of this album are absolutely insane. Movin' on Up, Don't Fight it, Feel it, Come Together, Loaded, and more, its loaded (for lack of a better term) with absolute bangers. It's essential pump up and feel good music, and the musicality and trip-hoppy elements to it just make it all the more addicting. Definitely won't be leaving my rotation anytime soon.

very cool 90s situation.

funky stuff

Before listening to this album, I'd only ever listened to "Movin' On Up" (which I absolutely love), and "Loaded," so I had pretty high hopes for this album. I enjoyed the longer songs, and I thought that the longer song structure really gives Primal Scream more space to really lean into the dance and psychedelic elements that are present here, especially on "Slip Inside This House" and "Don't Fight It, Feel It," the latter of which reminded me of some of my favorite elements of LCD Soundsystem's music. The psychedelic piano and keyboard playing on "Come Together," combined with the horns, was my favorite track outside of "Movin' On Up." I didn't really listen to a lot of music from the UK during the 90's, and I'm always so bummed that I'm discovering a lot of these bands later in life. I think I would have loved some of the tracks here as a kid. I didn't love this album as much as I thought I would, but I still think it's great, and I think the unique sounds that Primal Scream put together here really showcase their talent.

Although I had never heard this album before, it somehow made me nostalgic. It sounds so incredibly early 90's, and I mean that as a compliment! It's such a fun listen from start to finish, and one song in particular, "Higher Than The Sun," has been stuck in my head ever since. Towards the end, the songs become more melancholy and introspective, which is a nice change from the more dance-rock feel of the first half. There's a mix of psychedelica, techno/dance, and rock throughout that somehow blends perfectly together and makes this an easy listen. I could see myself putting this album on while cleaning/doing chores around the house, or when I just need something to lift my mood. Standout Tracks: "Higher Than The Sun," "Loaded," "Slip Inside This House," "Damaged"

It slaps.

Not bad, moving on up is a good song

Rock-dance alternativo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Trippy little gem

pretty good album, liked it quite a bit with repeat plays.

What a trip. A heady mix of Cool Britainnia's raw ingredients, served popping hot.

A good rockin' 90s album

I like this. Mellow, melodic. Never listened to it before. 4/5

I was very pleased at the lack of screaming. I was worried. Very much enjoyed this album

Ooo ye

I can do a Primal Scream: ahhhhhhh

Sounds more fresh today than it did in 1991. A great argument for acid rock and taking acid in general.

Although this album is alternative in the truest sense, there are moments in a few tracks that contain somewhat expected melody and pop composition. One of the best is “I’m Coming Down”, with unique twisting of saxophone. There are many textures to this album, but with a glass of wine or a slow sipping of bourbon, this eclectic mix of funk soul jazz and indie rock is quite pleasing. There is a lot going on with this album. In a good way.

Much underrated Primal, they are the epitome of eclecticism, they never played it safe and went into some very interesting musical corners and came out the better for it. I'm a Bobby fan period, love his style and range, Shaun get's all the plaudits from this era, but aye Bobby is the man for me. I saw them in Adelaide at the 2000 BDO and it was a fantastic show, they were touring XTRMNTR but they gave a pretty good broad based show of their stuff. I love the soul influences and the way it blends with the house sounds, a great production. Like all good records they capture the zeitgeist perfectly,(think Trainspotting), Don't Fight It Feel It is out of this world and funky as fuck, as is Loaded. They are the whole pre Britpop vibe, a great era for British pop music. Love this record.

Really enjoyed this. Knew some tracks already, but a lot of it was new to me. Loaded is probably my favourite Primal Scream track. I really liked I’m Comin’ Down, although it reeks of Jesus & Mary Chain. And also loved Don’t Forget It Feel It - especially the female vocals. Enjoyed the dub approach on Come Together & Jah Wobble’s part in Higher than The Sun. In fact, the laid-back feel of the last 4 tracks was really easy to listen to. Did they ever make a better album?

I have loved this record since it came out. The songs are, perhaps, not that strong, but the production and mood lifts this into the all time classic range. Its a night in the clubs, with the chill-out come-down at the end. The spaced-out, dubbed-out, extended dance mix production turn this into an album that I can listen to over and over again. Loaded is a staple of my DJ sets, but in context, event he weaker songs on this album work because of the way they contribute to the mood and journey of the record. love it.

Higher than the sun 👌 Очень похоже на сонгс оф фэйт энд дивоушн Госпел, брейкбит замедленный, медитативность, транс Come together

Probably guilty of things I’ve marked other albums down for. Don’t care, I’m real into this stuff.

Banger instrumentals, gets rea experimental sometimes with the electronic sounds. Some of the tracks are underwhelming and could be cut. The singles and the standouts shine through. Also I'm obsessed with the album art. She's cute.

une love hate relationship je dirais

Nice album, good trip.

Interesting. The name hinted at something far more intense and less enjoyable.

I really like Primal Scream, and this is a very good album. Its got at least three stand out tracks, and the whole theme of being on drugs among young people is very consistent. 4/5

Psychedelic background music!

There’s a common style running through these Scottish bands of the time: these guys and Soup Dragons and Jesus and Mary Chain. Very good stuff.

Overrated probably. It’s a very good album but I don’t think it’s the classic others hold it up as.

Movin' On Up and Loaded have always been on my playlists over the years but there's actually quite a lot here worth a second or third listen for me...so going to rarified air my friend with a 4 stars.

George Michael does shrooms.

I really enjoyed most of the album. There were a few moments where the vibe kind of lagged for me, but overall, I found it quite good!

A couple of these songs are strong 5s for me (Movin' On Up, Loaded) and I already knew and liked Come Together from Trainspotting. I had a good time grooving to the rest. I will want to listen again.

Light and softy

This record sounds like it's built for a DJ to mix and spin how they please. What a ride.

Rock-dance alternativo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Primal Scream certainly are unafraid to mash different genres together, and regardless of the results more bands ought to have that kind of creativity. This band is many things, but they’re almost never boring.

Woooh! Good and interesting psychedelic rock

I’m familiar with a few Primal Scream songs, and I do like the ones I’ve heard. I was surprised the first time I heard them because I expected them to be death metal or something - the name Primal Scream would suggest being quite brutal, but this isn’t the case. Songs I already knew: Movin’ On Up, Come Together, Loaded Favourites: Movin’ On Up, Loaded Screamadelica seems to find the line between trippy and catchy music. Oftentimes, I’ve found psychedelic rock to be a little too far into the weird, to the point that it becomes hard to listen to. Primal Scream toes this line, but never becomes hard to listen to. There are plenty of catchy hooks that I found myself easily singing along to. For some reason, I always thought Loaded was by The Prodigy, but that might be become it is a little similar to Stand Up by them. Overall, I really enjoyed this album, and am happy to have heard an album in full.

This album was really cool. Like early bloghouse.

I thought this was dope, gonna listen more!

Feels a little tired but then ends quite pleasantly hazy. A spiffed and modernized Stones sound, a kinder-gentler Oasis. All-around groovy and the mellower the better. The band seems to have been quite opportunistic in blending clubby-ravey tropes with an indie rock heart. Doesn’t seem like it should work as well as it does. Last few cuts best.

I don't like the vocals much, but everything else makes up for it pretty well IMHO. I recommend being nice and stoned for this one. 👍

Ah, Loaded, what a way to start an evening. Damaged, amazingly tender. But let's just talk about Movin' on up -one of the just inspiring, semi-religious quality tunes ever written. You need a pick me up? There you go. And all done to the backdrop of drugs, the early 90's UK music scene and erm, more drugs. Yeh well there's a lot of things here that don't work unless well, that lots of drugs thing is happening, but what a snapshot in time this album is. Oh and what a tune Movin' on up is. Says everything that these days it's on my running playlist. 90's me would be ashamed of me

Firmly planted in the 90s. Quite enjoyable. I grew tired of the modulated space sound bleeps, but hey, they were hip at the time. This was a favourite album of a previous student, so I enjoyed remembering the music chats we had. Thanks 1001 albums.

- First Primal Scream album I've listened to - Can see why this album is a cult classic - Hard to place what genre it is in a very good way - Doesn't sound anywhere near as old as it is - Fav songs: Movin' on Up, Loaded, Damaged

Not very primal or screamy, but still pretty good whatever the hell genre this is. Honestly feels like the UK version of shibuya-kei. 4 stars.

If I have one thing to criticise this iconic album is that its a bit too long

wow really interesting. that opening track nails a beautiful homage to 60's bands like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. After that it takes a dive into a more bizarre 80's/90's amalgamation, seems like they couldn't decide on a cohesive direction for the album. Has flavors of Oasis. Gets back to that 60s rock vibe at Come Together, and Loaded. I think my biggest complaint is the lack of direction it seems like they were trying to do two very different things with the album.

Enjoyed this jangle pop album more than I thought I would.even added two songs from it to some of my playlists.

Oh I'm EXCITED about this one - just in the first 30 seconds I'm EXCITED. It's my style. The beat, the lyrics, the musicality - they got my number. Can't help but bop my head. I would get out of bed to start the day for this song. Can confirm that I've played "Movin on Up" many many times as my "get out of bed and start the day" motivational song - in US, France, and England. Works across continents. It's the exact type of "morning montage happening in tandem with the opening movie credits" that used to be big in rom com films in the 90s and I do enjoy a cinematic morning. So that's the stand-out but Loaded also jumped out at me. I love the intro to it. Don't' Fight it, Feel it was great first listen, although on repeat listens the warbly whistle gets old.

Wow, been meaning to listen to this album forever. Not at all what I'd expected from the name. It's a bit repetitive, but it stayed interesting to me. Definitely into it. Standouts: Movin' on Up, Slip Inside This House, Come Together, Loaded, Damaged

Wat moeilijk om into te geraken maar verbazend goed.

Molto trippy, le canzoni sono anche piuttosto famose. Non male.

"The Prodigy" + "Foals" best of: "Slip inside this house" and "Shine like stars"

Finalmente um álbum psicodélico entregou mais do que eu esperava, camadas sonoras oníricas envolventes.

First song great

A classic of early '90s psychedelic pop. Songs generally hold up to time pretty well, all things considered. A certifiable Very Good Record.

Really cool sounds, reminded me a little bit if gorillaz, did they influence them?

Easy to see why is an important album. Every song sounds made from a different band, I could spot a couple of later music and soundtracks inspired by this. Great with earphones.

Bought this the week it came out, haven't heard it in ages but still know every note! Era-defining stuff, but docked a point for the bloated version of Come Together, which so disappointed me on first hearing that it wasn't the (much better) single version. Can't find the title track (from the Dixie Narco EP) streaming anywhere, would have made a good substitute.

Showing its age but still a great album.

Not my favourite album by the scream, and very much of its time, but still sounds great.

Pretty cool

Not a huge fan of 6 minute long repetitive songs, but this is classic 90s rock/alternative/dance fusion. A little something for everyone Favorite Tracks: Movin' On Up, Loaded, Come Together

Very good

This was not what I expected but I enjoyed it!

when i saw the album art i thought oh, THIS shit is very good. it’s so cute just look at it. the songs themselves were just ok and all kind of sounded like each other but i just like this little guy on the album cover so much. some of the songs were even pretty good.

Such a relief that they are not the Pearl Jam esq middling rock band from the early 90s that I thought they were. Some great tracks on here let down by the last few.

Dakle, interesantan album. Po coveru, nazivu i žanru u kakvoj je kombinaciji sam mislio čak da će biti nešto slično Sublime-u, ali drago mi je da sam bio u krivu.

Ooh ok I haven’t heard this in a while… The album opens with it’s most “ normal” song movin’ on up a rather happy clappy little song to get everyone singing before the true nature of the album is revealed with… Slip inside this house a cover song originally by a 60’s band called 13th floor elevators it’s really got the Indian based psychedelic feel of the later era Beatles, the song isn’t one of my favourites but I love the way he sings the lyrics on here. The third song on here is don’t fight it feel it It’s an alright song I like the whistling sounds crashing with the more dance like elements, this is probably the most clubby on here unlike come together or loaded ( later in this album) this song doesn’t really own it’s longer run time and drags after the songs first half. Next is higher than the sun the album’s shortest song a great drawling trance of a track, really enjoyable and a true drug song ( but not as much as the alternative version of the song later in the album ( which I prefer over this)). Inner flight ( while not a favourite of mine) is a brilliant instrumental piece with thundering tribal drums and haunted “aah’s” and “ooh’s leading just perfectly into… Come together the album’s centrepiece track a 10 minute epic which sounds like it’s made only of samples being layered over a drum beat. It’s surprisingly amazing and doesn’t drag! “ Just what is it that you want to do? Well, we wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do And we wanna get loaded and we wanna have a good time And that's what we're gonna do (away baby, let's go) We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party” This is the sample at the start of loaded which probably wins for my favourite sample of all time; anyway the actual song is great too a 7 minuter this time it feels like a more rock based version of come together as it has more organic guitars and pianos over all of the sampling and drum beat, the high to end all highs a true highlight! Damaged sounds like it’s meant to represent the comedown from loaded, the most distinctive track a very organic slow kinda beautiful sonic. But honestly if you’re not like me and you don’t like more traditional songs you will hate this, I like it though. I’am coming down is a very distinctive track amongst the album this slow drag of a song with some quite Indian sounding instrumentals and tribal drumming, not a favourite but a good collection of sounds on this one. Higher than the sun ( feat.Jah wobble) is a slower 7 minute drug filled version of the other version of the track. It’s a song that sounds like it’s made for headphones with the sampling in one ear then this tapping noise in the other originally making me wonder if someone was knocking on the first minutes ( oh yeah and half way it just stops for an awesome bass solo to only rebuild the song). I love this! The album closes with shine like stars a slow heavenly track with a surprisingly creepy verse for the last bit it sounds like it’s gone an octave or so down making the last moments sound surprisingly depressed. This music seriously isn’t my thing though and giving it a 5 would be disingenuous, it’s a 4 and everyone should give it a go but it’s so drugged up too much for the attention span of the 2020’s

At the risk of spoilers for the uninitiated, the overall sound is reminiscent of the late 90s U.S. Anti-Piracy commercials. The feelings through the first few tracks are mostly neutral, up until "Inner Flight" where it seems to sneak into a little of experimental groove, and not in a great way. This album though has some serious 90s nostalgia, from the drum loops to the overall feeling of the recording itself, but it is 1991 and seemingly well before this style started to dominate the airwaves of the 90s with popular singles from The Verve, Primitive Radio Gods, Butthole Surfers, etc. all can be traced to the feel of "Screamadelica". Sometimes, when a band tries to incorporate wide variety into a single album it tends to induce a feeling of disorganization rather than innovation. Primal Scream seems to balance this act rather well, and while there were certainly different moments, they did not feel out of place here. Surprisingly easy to listen to, the album deserves to be enjoyed in moments of winding down or during leisure activities. The ebbs and flows of the album are just a well-crafted balance of an overall intentional experience. While some songs may impact more than others, the album speaks for itself in its entirety rather than from a dominating single, and that is a good thing.

Dope asf chill slightly dubby

Screamadelica has grown on me massively since the last time I heard it. The influences feel very dated but the assemblage is inspired and fresh. For whatever reason, I still find myself referring to the pop hooks of the band's 2010 output, but this is objectively superior and I expect to uncover more layers in the future.

im a simp for ray charles and this has come rain or come shine on it.

my kind of music!

Still sounds cool, laid-back and clubby sometimes all at the same time. Love the 3 proper Primal Scream songs. Damaged and Movin on up are particularly good.

Good for speedy work sessions. Come Together is a fun track.

3.5 I'd say

Ricky Spong loves the album. He puts it on when he and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit Chester's blue light district.

great album very diverse going from jazz to funk and psychedelics as the name implies

Never listened to Primal Scream before, although I recognize Movin' on Up? Slip Inside the House; this is a strange pivot, but I like it. Higher than the Sun is a bit of a relic; breaks between the lyrical verses is pretty dope though. Overall I liked this more than I would have expected; not my preferred style but great songs pretty much throughout.

Fantastic trippy crossover of rock and rave music. Some of it sounds like a modern electronic take on classic Rolling Stones while other tracks are just straight up psychedelic, sweaty warehouse bangers. Liked this a lot more than I expected though I'm not sure what I was expecting anyway.

This is really cool and good, like a proto-Animal Collective? Definitely adding this to my current rotation. 4.5

Based on the album name, I wasn’t sure what to expect but i liked this album enough to buy the CD.

Low 4, refreshed by the variety of the album but seemed a tad long

A surefire 90s classic album with songs that soundtracked many a summer festival night, but weakend by some lazily constructed album tracks that felt thrown together.
