1001 Albums Summary

Listened to this a lot while growing up, likely as a small rebellion against my Dad who mainly listens to punk and reggae. Best track: Riders on the Storm.

Another album I was familiar with, and its banger after banger. Favourite track: a tough choice, but I love Monkey Gone to Heaven.

First album that I move got no history with, and it’s great! Beautifully put together, sounds fresh as fuck. Favourite track: Join the Boys

Another old favourite, although it’s been a long time since I listened in full! Favourite track: another tough choice, but I do love Karma Police.

Another classic that was played a lot around the house growing up, it’s Ill Communication by the Beastie Boys. Favourite track: very hard to choose, but to be contrarian, I’m going with Root Down.

I wasn’t that familiar with Tribe, but last year I read the excellent Go Ahead in the Rain by Hanif Abduraqib, and that got me into their music. Great album! Favourite track: Butter

An album I totally missed at the time, but very solid throughout. Favourite track: Stop Dat

No chance I would’ve appreciated this when I was eleven, but it’s cracking - rich and interesting. Favourite track: tough to pick, but The Fear stuck with me after a first listen.

So far, this is the first album I’ve struggled getting through - the swing between catchy songs and ballads is a little too much for me. Favourite track: Blue Suede Shoes

It’s no Desire, but it’s still a great album. Favourite track: a lot to choose from, but I’m a sucker for Shelter from the Storm.

First time listening to an Aphex Twin album, and I had a right good time. It’s like the perfect tracks for PS1 start menus.

The CSI band made an album? Good for them! I went through a bit of a Who phase when I was younger (well, I liked Tommy), and three of the tracks here are some of their best known songs. A decent album overall. Favourite track: Getting in tune

Another classic I grew up with. My Dad often talks about getting to see the original line-up at least three times. Not that I’m jealous. Favourite track: Judy is a Punk

What an album! Paired perfectly with a lovely bright walk this morning. Favourite track: it’s got to be Safe From Harm

You can definitely imagine this playing on tape in your divorced Dad’s car. Loved the lyrics, but not the biggest fan of Bragg’s voice. Favourite track: The Home Front

Honestly, I thought I’d like this more. Some very good tracks, but everything feels about 30 seconds too long. It’s also inspired my drag name: Depish Maude. Ali hates it! Favourite track: Enjoy the Silence

Like many misguided students in the early 2000s, I had a Zappa phase, so this wasn’t totally new to me. Albums like this can be pretty hit or miss, but I had a good time throughout. Favourite track: Willie the Pimp

Wasn’t expecting to enjoying this album as much as I did! Very of its time, but it works. Favourite track: Jennifer’s Body

Banger after banger - even though most of the tracks are so familiar, it’s great to hear them all together on the album. Favourite track: Lost in Music

Not one I’d heard before, but it’s good. Feels like it could grow on me (rather than show on me???). Favourite track: Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)

The album that inspired the creation of Formula One. Amazing album to take on my misty morning walk. Favourite track: The Chain

Forty minutes of great music - loved it! Favourite track: Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)

Feels like the perfect album for a wee night with a glass of wine and some long looks out the window, rather than a bright an smelly walk in the country. It’s good though! Favourite track: Never is a Promise

A lot of fun, but maybe too much fun for before 8am on a Saturday. Grinned throughout. Favourite track: Planet Rock

Not for me at all - it’s like every song has a great minute that’s repeated for a further five minutes, and then the next track starts. Favourite track: Da Funk

Good fun! Great mix of punk sensibilities with catchy pop. Favourite track: Heart of Glass

Not necessarily my kind of thing, but you can’t deny it’s pretty good. Favourite track: Free Bird

Not for me, I’m afraid! Not a bad selection of standards, but it’s a little boring imo. Favourite track: Stardust

Interesting album - stark at times, but fairly chill. One I’d come back to, I think. Favourite track: Seven

For a forty-odd minute album with only five tracks, this fair flies by! Favourite track: Wish You Were Here

Fun album, and works perfectly as the soundtrack to me getting whipped at Virtua Fighter 5. Favourite track: On the DL

It’s fine for what it is, and I admire any artist who pumps out a double album. Favourite track: Ain’t No Other Man

This felt just like a cast recording for a musical - I loved it! Favourite track: Crime of the Century

Twelve very catchy songs, and they blast right through them. Favourite track: Straight Shooter

A banger of an album - not a wasted minute. Favourite track: there’s no bad choice for this album, but it’s got to be Born to Run.

Had no idea Mott was British until they sung about being on the dole. Not an album I’ll go back to - fine, but not for me. Favourite track: I’m a Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso

Good album - flows very nicely. Favourite track: The Corner

Christina’s second entry in the list, and with a better album imo. Still not my kind of thing, but you have to admire the drive. Favourite track: Make Over

Found myself laughing a lot while listening to Scum - 28 tracks in 33 minutes will do that to a person. Favourite track: Scum

Decent album, but didn’t quite grab me. Favourite track: Fiction Romance

First-time listen for me, and I liked it! The band sound real tight throughout. Favourite track: Shut the Door

Wasn’t expecting a live double album this morning, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Favourite track: Massacre

Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this at all, so imagine my surprise when I found out it was decent! Don’t think I’m a convert, but I won’t be as dismissive in the future. Favourite track: Wond’ring Aloud

Not quite what I was looking for this morning, but I admire how singular Wainwright is, and what a set of pipes! Favourite track: Old Whore’s Diet

This didn’t really sit with me at all - tracks kind of merge into one another, and I found myself checking how long was left. Not rotten, just not for me. Favourite track: Oh My Sweet Carolina

An album that’s almost exactly as old as I am, and just like me, it’s decent, but not the best (Smiths album). Favourite track: Girlfriend in a Coma

Good album, but an absolute bummer (understandably so). Favourite track: Faster

Hard not to enjoy this tbh - the exact right songs and arrangements for old Frank. Favourite track: Pennies from Heaven

This is the first Blur album I’ve listened to from start to finish - it’s great! Favourite track: Hard to pick, but it’s tough to beat Song 2

Good album! Pleasant to pop on while walking in the woods. Favourite track: Lies

First listen to this in at least 15 - 18 years. It’s still a decent debut album. Favourite track: Molly’s Chambers

An album to nod along to for an hour or so - it’s good! Favourite track: Setting Sun

A very chill way to start the day. I don’t have a great ear for jazz, but this felt very accessible. Favourite track: All of You

Fine, I suppose! Nothing really stuck out for me, but it’s less than 30 minutes long. Favourite track: Black Rose

Now that’s an album - fun, exciting and every sample makes me laugh. Favourite track: Slow Ride

The first Parental Guidance album I owned (bought in Oban), and I was curious to go back to it. It was terrible! A deeply unpleasant listen. Favourite track: N/A

Tough to beat some classic rock - and it doesn’t get more classic than this! Favourite track: Stairway to Heaven

The Straits aren’t really my thing, but it’s a fairly chill album with some catchy tunes. Favourite track: Water of Love

An all-timer - bold, exciting and still so fresh. Favourite track: Purple Rain

Good album - short and sweet. Laughed out loud at the song title “You Sure Love To Ball”. Favourite track: Let’s Get It On

Sounds good, but the cover of Imagine wasn’t the best! Favourite track: El Bab

An easy twenty years since I last heard this, and it’s still a decent album. Reminds me of long trips in my Mum’s car. Favourite track: A Whisper

When I saw this was over 70 minutes long, I have to admit, I wasn’t keen! But that was 76 minutes ago, and I’m a new, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road loving man! Genuinely great album. Favourite track: I’ve seen that movie too

Just the other day I was saying to Ali that I’ve not listened to Scott Walker (my namesake) for ages, and today I’ve been gifted with a relisten of one of my favourite albums. A classic! Favourite track: The Old Man’s Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime)

Firstly, no chance is this album 16 years old. Secondly - it’s a fine, fairly catchy album where half the tracks feel like the same song. Favourite track: Sinister Kid

It’s a decent album, but I’m generally not a fan - for multiple reasons (the obvious ones, and due to Earth Song being on repeat on Top of the Pops when I was eight) Favourite track: I Can’t Help It

Every track feels like a minute too long, but it’s still fun! Favourite track: Hand of Doom

Practically perfect, and it still feels fresh after 25(!) years. Favourite track: Every track is a favourite, but I do love The Union Forever.

A genuinely interesting album - it’s hard to predict where it’ll go next. It’s good too, which is a bonus! Favourite track: ‘Til I Die

Great album - might seem a little softer, compared to what came later, but there’s a lot of good stuff going on. Favourite track: Hard Times

Honestly, I kept losing interest - just not a fan.

Firstly, it’s wild that this album is 14 years old. Secondly - it’s good! Catchy songs, neat lyrics. A good companion for a walk around the woods. Favourite track: Love Interruption

A classic, and one of the last CDs I was given by my parents (still alive, they just don’t buy me CDs anymore). Excellent samples. Favourite track: The Message
