I mean, you're going to listen to one Amy Winehouse album, make it the other one. This is ok, but it goes on for way too long.
Lovely voice, but it’s clear the production wasn’t up to snuff on this one. Not bad though.
Not as good as Back to Black. I find her voice pretty annoying on here.
It was fine. Cool to see the start and promise, but later work is what really set her status as a star. Really great voice
i love this album, i love amy. that’s it
FRANK by Amy Winehouse ———————————————— A cool debut album with decent but not spectacular songs 🟡 🟡 🟡 ⚫️ ⚫️ 56% ———————————————— Amy’s debut released in 2003 at the age of 19. She sounds more mature than that - almost fully borne into the talented singer she would become. The album drips with her young talent and a cool jazz schtick - reminiscent of Nina Simone and Frank Sinatra (after who the album is named). But the album also has relatively simple songs, and suffers from equally simple musical arrangements, and perhaps rushed production - and so it misses out on what it could have been. Initial sales reached No 13, and were strongly boosted after her untimely death, re-entering the charts and reaching No 5 going quadruple platinum. Amy herself said she hated the album, thought it was poorly marketed, never listened to it, and would not have a copy in the house - harsh and self critical but indicative that it was not the strong debut she hoped for. Some tension then in the rating with the general reception being revised strongly upwards on second entry - for me it gets 3 stars per first release - mainly because for me there are no stand out songs.
Great voice, uninspired songwriting
stripped down from what I associate with her. I do love her tho.
I liked this album better than her debut; the songs felt tighter and less frantic. Must be the jazz element that was more prevalent here.
Very silky, very jazzy; such a unique voice.
i fuck with ts, god jazz, fin stemme
I get why she had so many followers. Her voice and technique were simply amazing and the bands accompanying her also too. Apart from a couple of songs, the album didn't really do much for me. Maybe it's just because it's not my favorite genre, but I felt like most of it was pretty standard stuff for that style of music
Not bad for jazz After a while they all sound the same Once in a generation voice
Feel bad because Amy Winehouse is obviously an absolute icon with unbelievable levels of talent, but this is an objectively boring album.
Album #1089 (my last one)! And what a great way to send off the journey. Every time I listen to Amy Winehouse, I marvel at how ridiculously strong her voice is. How can you not adore that cutting, emotive high croon that could be heard across a loud ballroom? What a legend. Frank isn't nearly as strong, catchy, or punchy than her untouchable follow-up Back To Black, but the former has its fair share of great tracks too. Even if quite a few of them sound the same on account of using near-identical instrument textures. After a jazz-improv opener (~20s or so), we get the classically soulful Stronger Than Me. Perfectly good, a serviceable Winehouse track, until the repeated title lyric at around 3:00 where the band take it up a notch. Love the trumpet especially. And the extended outro lets instruments like the drums and guitar shine. We jump straight into You Sent Me Flying, an excellent piano ballad that morphs into a new section with more kick and energy to it (while still keeping the same primary piano contribution). The outro, Cherry, stands out as a little bizarre given it isn't a self-contained track yet sounds completely different to You Sent Me Flying. Still groovy as heck though. Know You Now has unusual, distinctive harmonies and a lovely Latin feel. That percussion part gives me jazz band flashbacks. Fuck Me Pumps is of course the hit track here – and for good reason. It's damn catchy. The star of I Heard Love Is Blind, easily, is that expressively strummed acoustic guitar. Again, very much a Latin feel to this piece. Though Moody's Mood For Love is fairly straightforward as Winehouse tracks go, the exceptionally understated outro Teo Licks is fantastic. That sax is incredible. Zero notes. (There Is) No Greater Love stumbles around, love-drunk, without any obvious tempo that I can detect. (Rubato!) A very good song. I love Winehouse's ballads. It's contrasted by the insistent foot-tapper In My Bed. Not super convinced by the trumpet here – it sounds a bit like somebody added MIDI brass in post to octave-harmonise the actual melody. Take The Box? Don't mind if I do. Winehouse's enunciation really shines here. Everything just works: the melody, that beautiful vibrato, the soft backing vocals, the even softer brass way back in the mix, the self-assured but laid-back drumming... October Song, though a bit forgettable in terms of hooks, doesn't really do anything wrong when viewed in isolation. Though the song What Is It About Men? sounds incredible (as usual), the lyrics blame men as a collective for being bad people, presumably based on Winehouse's past boyfriends. I promise, girl, there are good men out there. The vast majority of them, even. I can't really fault the song though, because the wah-wah synth(? or guitar?) makes it distinctive and smooth as heck. Help Yourself calls me out for having a degree in philosophy. Thanks? I like the little repeated horn melody. On the first record by Amy, Amy's Amy Amy Amy stands out nicely. I like when the girl in the background (possibly Amy) says "Amy Amy Amy" before Amy herself says Amy a few times. Good job Amy. While the "Outro" track (though there are still two hidden tracks remaining) is pretty inconsequential, it easily bests the vast majority of hip-hop interludes, so I'll let it slide. Brother, the penultimate song, doesn't too too much new apart from those gorgeous layered backing vocals. So light, delicate, and yet so musically interesting. The closer, Mr Magic, has perhaps the cleanest production of all the songs thus far – at least in terms of instruments. The brass and keyboards are so, so clean. It's been a blast, yo. 4/5 Key tracks: You Sent Me Flying, Fuck Me Pumps, Take The Box, Mr Magic (Through The Smoke)
Beautiful singing and melodies, but I didn't love the lyrics.
A voz ja lá estava, a composição a espaços tambem, mas nao senti que fosse coeso. Um preview do que estava para vir
Nope
Good Album for me; it shows Amy Winehouse without the commercial songs, but pure with her ideas and voice, and really good production by Salaam Remi, which I really like. Frank has two very good songs: ‘’In My Bed’’ and ‘’Amy Amy Amy’’ 7 out of 10.
Poor poor Amy
Finally, something that really stood out to me! I loved loved loved this album!!
The album was mostly ok, with vocals at the forefront and minimal backing, but over time I found it a bit tiring. Jazz bits occasionally pulled me out of the vibe and it just doesn’t quite click for me.
Didn't get along with this album as well as "Back To Black". It was still enjoyable overall and Amy's voice is solid, though the slurring style was a little irritating in some tracks. The theme gets a bit stale, and the backing isn't quite as good here. It's still interesting and I enjoyed the jazzy vibes though. Still had my foot tapping and still a huge talent.
Es mejor su siguiente album, pero, sin entender las letras, resulta ser un buen disco debut de una voz peculiar con unas canciones retro.
I knew I was in for a good time when this came up
It surprised me how tolerable I found this considering how much I dislike all things Frank Sinatra. I guess that's a testament to the skill of Amy Winehouse.
I guess this was a big deal because it was jazz-ish music about going out and getting drunk and partying... But I find her voice really nasal and the songs a bit meh.
A great album all in all- much better than back 2 black I think. Amy has an amazing voice on her that just improves any song. So many of the tracks have such catchy hooks and choruses that get stuck in your head. It’s insane she was so young when making this project..her, 19 releasing a well-renowned album..me, 20 rating albums at 1am when I should be studying :( ..anyways standouts have to be ‘mr magic’, ‘in my bed’ and ‘Amy Amy Amy’. Frank is an album that has aged marvellously
Surprisingly good. Didn't think she was actually as good as this.
Timeless and brilliant.
Just ok
I know the name, but not the artist. Honestly I might revisit it.
This one's not for me. Despite Winehouse's vocal talent, most of these tracks are fairly unmemorable and the album's sound just isn't my thing. Hard to believe she was only 19 when this was recorded because she already seems so jaded here. Poor kid.
Збс белая пытается в джазик и довольно успешно
Was ok. Next one a lot better
I love this album it is my all time favorite album i have done schoolwork on this album i LOVE this album i have talked to all of my friends about this album i love amy
I was interested in this one, because I quite liked the Amy Winehouse I had heard. Turns out all of it was from her other album. This album is merely okay. The instrumentals and vocals are a bit too toothless and easy listening while the lyrics are often annoying.
This didnt resonate with me. She has an undoubtedly good voice and this is her before the polish and production and fame took over so could be more interesting but it sounds unfinished and inconsistent. The profuction has dated a lot more than her later albums and she hasnt worked out who she is so the album flips between genre too frequently to build up any cohesion. The songs are also less well written with some pretty immature lyrics and no real stand out. tent pole songs to lift everything up.
This review is based on the US edition of the album, which forgoes the track "Help Yourself". I remember getting Back to Black as my fourth album from this generator, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then earlier this year, I revisited that record for its 20th anniversary, and it holds up. But here's the thing - it feels like Back to Black is the one Amy Winehouse album that comes to mind these days. Most people don't think about her debut, Frank. Don't get me wrong; Back to Black is clearly better than Frank. What makes Frank's slightly inferior is how unfocused it can be. It comes off as a series of musical vignettes that don't tie together into a cohesive narrative. All the while, she and her producers experimented to find her footing, including jazz standards, medleys, occasional hip-hop cadences, and two hidden tracks after an outro piece that really didn't fit with the rest of the record. That said, this record is ambitious, planting the seeds that would blossom on Back to Black. I can hear what was to come from bops like "Stronger Than Me", "Know You Now", "Fuck Me Pumps", and "October Song", alongside the smoldering bitterness in recounting the breakup on "Take the Box". But this record also has some intriguing quirks I was really into. I liked the intimacy Amy elicited as she strummed her acoustic guitar while the horns ramped up in the back on "I Heard Love is Blind", followed later by the smooth jazz take on Isham Jones's "(There Is) No Greater Love". I can recognize how earnest she wore the Sarah Vaughan influence on her sleeve with the piano-driven "You Sent Me Flying" and the trip-hop rendition of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love", even if the latter's clanking, reverbed percussion got a tad grating. Plus, she absolutely worked that hip-hop cadence on "In the Bed" and the sly funk of "What Is It About Men". Even without the tight cohesiveness Back to Black had, Frank is still a solid debut that showcased a bright star. It sucks that Amy Winehouse left us so soon, but it's still damn impressive that her brief discography is still this amazing.
Amy's really hard to assess - she definitely has chops and good taste. She covers Mr. Magic, she paraphrases Sarah Vaughn. She also has a level of patois that really seems strange for a middle class british woman.
30 Sep 2026 · 6/10 It's good, but not varied enough. Also I really dislike cursive singing. Her other album is significantly better. Overall it's quite good, but I just didn't like that many of the individual songs.
Amy, Amy, Amy ❤️
I'm familiar with Amy Winehouse as she was releasing music in one of my favourite periods 1996-2007. However, not my favourite genre.
just wasn’t feeling most of it
Listening session: september 30th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard a few songs before Thoughts: so Amy Winehouse’s peak is definitely at Back to Black, especially when it comes to the songwriting, but I appreciate the jazzier aspect of this album Favourite tracks: Fuck Me Pumps, (There Is) No Greater Love & Mr Magic (Through The Smoke)

No takeaways from me, but it was a pretty enjoyable listen. I'd have to say 3.5? It was fun, she has a great voice, the music is good, but it's not something I'd be seeking out to listen to. This isn't even her most popular album, though, so I'm sure she has other great stuff as well.
A beautiful album by Amy—I never get tired of it. The music is great, and her voice is amazing. I love listening to it over and over again. 5/5
Intro/Stronger Than Me - 3.5/5 You Sent Me Flying - 3.5/5 Know You Now - 3/5 F**k Me Pumps - 3/5 I Heard Love is Blind - 3/5 Moody's Mood for Love - 3/5 (There Is) No Greater Love - 3/5 In My Bed - 3.5/5 Take the Box - 3.5/5 October Song - 3/5 What Is It About Men? - 3/5 Amy Amy Amy/Outro - 3/5 Winehouse wrote this at 19, which was a good preview of what she was to become in her limited time on Earth, though that praise can go the other way. Most of the songs sound a little bit same-y, and there really isn't a true standout like there was on Back to Black (which there were several!). It's a good start, but nothing on here really blew me away. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Stronger Than Me, You Send Me Flying
!!!!
This album is perhaps not Amy's finest but an enjoyable listen all the same and a cut above many of the 3 scoring average albums on this app
Blah
Mark Ronson really helped Amy make a Back to Black a classic. This sounds like a demos album in comparison. Shout out to #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie for once again overrepresenting an artist who definitely deserved one entry but absolutely not a second. There are so many great artists who aren't represented at all of the list. 3 Stars.
I wonder what she's up to these days
There's no question Amy Winehouse had a fantastic voice, or that the story of her life and the legend she left behind are as much a part of her legacy as her music. The fact of the matter is that all of that notwithstanding, I just don't like the songs that much and wouldn't choose to listen to it. Personal preference pure and simple. I'll be generous and go down the middle with a 3 so as to remain as neutral as possible. Thank you and next please.
Very good, couple great songs. Something about it doesn’t totally click for me. Some of the jazz and hip hop influences seem to be competing rather than working together, maybe. What a voice, tho, huh?!
Better than some of the other R&B albums of the time
i didn't want to this album to be over. notice how every album by a woman on this list is peak. it's jazzy but unique and amy's vocals are insane. rip amy winehouse you will always be famous <3.
A few good tracks but this is an album best broken up into short sessions for me.
Notable Textzeile: Don't be mad at me 'cause you're pushing thirty And your old tricks no longer work You should have known from the jump That you always get dumped So dust off your "fuck me" pumps Selten kommen im Pop-Bereich eine Künstlerin mit einer solchen Intensität in Stimme und Habitus zusammen mit einem Producer-Team, das es genau versteht diese auch zu inszenieren, dabei klassische Songstrukturen und jazzige Insturmentisierung zu nutzen und etwas zeitloses und zugleich absolut modernes, avant-gardiges zu schaffen.
Okay. Amy Winehouse, lightning in a bottle. Aber auf dem nächsten Album. Dieses ist okay-gut, aber nicht anders, nur nicht ganz das Niveau von Back to Black. Als solches hat es auf der Liste eigentlich nichts verloren. Buh dafür.
Not nearly as good as Back to Black in my opinion, but man, you can already hear the potential. Amy was only 19 when this came out and her voice already sounds completely lived-in. The phrasing, the jazz influence, the way she bends a line around the beat, all of that is already there even if the songs themselves aren’t quite as strong yet. There’s a looser, more jazz-heavy feel here than on Back to Black, and I liked that in spots, but the album as a whole didn’t grab me the same way. It feels more like hearing somebody figure out exactly what they’re capable of. The saddest part for me actually came from the book. My edition only goes through 2004, so the contributor talks about Amy in the present tense and writes about hoping there’s a lot more to come from her. Knowing how everything turned out made that pretty heartbreaking to read.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but listening carefully to the lyrics it now seems obvious that Winehouse was a terribly damaged woman, and it's tragic she was exploited for her talents rather than given the help and support she needed. So I feel bad about admitting that I absolutely hated this record. Her vocal talents are undeniable but the music is tiresome, flat, and repetetive. The wikipedia article suggests she was an innovative genre-blender but I hear none of that, just lifeless lounge-bar background tunes of the most tedious kind.
I really wonder what her mature voice would’ve been.
Not sure how many albums Amy Winehouse has on here, I already had to do the one with Rehab whatever that was called. What a tiresome concept this is. Was there an appetite for this at some point? Pantomiming as a chanteuse but with a twist of that she emerged out of a nearby trashcan? When I phrase it like that it almost sounds like something that could be executed well. She was a pretty big commercial success if I remember correctly. As far as lyrics go I could almost interpret this album as someone broadcasting their low-self image but honestly I'm not entirely sure she was self-aware enough to do that. My evidence for that is when she spent an entire song alluding to the fact she was singing about a guitar but then felt like she needed to mention at the end that she was singing about a guitar. The backing tracks were a great employment opportunity for people that were probably in the school jazz band 4 years prior to express their idea of what sounds cool. The sonic equivalent of a kid that wears a trilby hat with normal clothes. Oh but there's drum loops! This isn't your parents playacted lounge music! At about 30 minutes I checked to see if the album was close to done when I realized it has almost an hour runtime. There are definitely some crappy albums on here but this one absolutely defies the entire exercise. I'm longing to have that hour back. If any information contained in that album is in my brain it's gotta leave as soon as possible. My prescription to salvage this concept would have been to have someone like Tom Waits do the backing tracks so there's actually some kind of feeling contained within and then have Stephin Merritt sit in to help write the perfect love song that only Amy Winehouse would know is actually just about the experience of crack. I'm not trying to get a dig in here, I honestly think that would create a pretty great trashcan chanteuse album.
Man I thought i would like Amy based on her hits. I don't. Lounge music is only so good, and adding basic RB vibes isn't enough.
Honestly, after being so down on Back to Black, this is a pleasant surprise. Amy Winehouse a 2000s icon so you should have her on the list, and this is the record I'd recommend.
Woefully released at a time when production trends weren't built to buttress Winehouse's voice and songwriting. This one fell flat.
Pre Listen: I know of Amy Winehouse mostly regarding her sudden and controversial death. If I recall, it's argued to be either an intentional suicide, incidental overdose/poisoning, or willfully negligent murder on the part of her family or producers? I also know (or think?) she was British, and astro-turfed into the industry by her wealthy and connected family, hence why her career was constantly followed with scrutiny even while she was alive. That association aside, I couldn't name any of her songs off the top of my head. Notable Tracks: Intro/Stronger Than Me - Least favorite track, and in incredibly weak start to the album. Set low expectations for the rest of the album. I found her scatting at the start of the album annoying, and the beat mix overpowering the rest of the backing track for the rest of the song. I Heard Love is Blind - Favorite track. I love that soft guitar, and Amy's voice is...alright here. Backing track is smooth as fuck. Post Listen: That was....different? I expected generic pop music, and instead I got an interesting mix of hip hop, R&B, and both smooth and big-band style jazz. The album got stronger the longer it went on. The trashier stuff I feel was front-loaded, and the better stuff tucked further back along the album. I will say, Amy's vocals were really hit or miss for me. She bounced back and forth from great vocal control to rival that of many female vocalists I adore, to singing with a trashy, incredibly fake sounding New York/Jersey accent. The lyrics too bounced back and forth from trashy and goofy, to rather poetic and sweet. The backing tracks were the highlight of almost every song, Lo-Fi remixes of established genres that just play so smoothly. I'm very torn between a 3 and a 4. One of the few cases were I think the vocalist *should've* dragged this down a point, but the production quality is just so damn high, it actually overpowers Amy's lowpoints. I won't be adding anything to my playlist, but I respect the value of this music. 4/5, close to a 5/5 if you listen to just the instrumental version of this album.
The album is well worth listening to. Repeatedly. Im not thrilled about some of the melodies. But the vocals are on point. The lyrics are rich. And the music itself is full and vibrant. Those melodies though. Hard to get past.
Great voice, but boring album overall Standout song: In my bed
Maybe R&B/Soul stuff just isn’t my genre. Mostly just sparse instrumentals while she sings about how she hates/doesn’t respect/cheated on her romantic partners. Cherry is a great song but it’s really only half of a song. DNF
I really enjoyed Frank. It’s a great debut and you can immediately hear how unique Amy Winehouse was as an artist. Her voice is incredible, but what stood out to me even more was her songwriting. There’s a lot of honesty and personality in the lyrics, and she has this way of talking about relationships, heartbreak, and her own flaws that feels both funny and painfully genuine. I especially liked songs like “Stronger Than Me,” “You Sent Me Flying,” and “Take the Box.” They have that jazzy, soulful sound that became such an important part of her identity, while still feeling quite different from what she would do later in her career. Frank also feels more raw and playful compared to Back to Black, which I think gives it its own charm. That being said, I still think Back to Black is the better album. Frank sometimes feels like Amy was still figuring out exactly what she wanted her sound to be, whereas Back to Black feels much more confident and cohesive. The songwriting, production, and overall atmosphere on Back to Black are just on another level, and it has some of her most unforgettable songs. Still, Frank is impressive considering it was her debut. You can already hear the talent, personality, and emotional honesty that would eventually make Amy Winehouse so special. It feels like a glimpse of an artist who was only going to get better. Overall, I really liked Frank, but Back to Black remains the clear winner for me. Frank is the beginning of the story, while Back to Black is where everything comes together.
Great voice. Shit lyrics. The music isn't that interesting. I suspect her later stuff was better. 'In My Bed' is the best of a lacklustre bunch - quite enjoyable. Overall, this one ain't my cuppa.
First time listen to this, even though Amy was a generational talent. I enjoyed this, a couple of stand out hits too, hope her later stuff makes it in too
Very strong debut from Amy, whose great vocal range is on display throughout the album. While there are fewer standouts than in her magnum opus, the album is very consistent throughout, offering a very satisfactory listen. 8/10 [KEEP]
Listening to Amy Winehouse as I relapse (back into a WoW habit) is maybe too on the nose. WoW FOREVER, what a threat.
An okay jazz pop record that's not half as good as "Back to Black". Her voice is amazing for her and, yes, but get singing can get annoying on this far too long album. And the lyrics, well... They are clever and funny at times, but also monothematic and depressing.
Great stuff, not quite the heights of back in black but still very good
A great voice, but forgettable songs.
Look, I love Amy and think she had a very difficult run at life but achieved excellent things despite that. This album was painful
I have always liked Amy Winehouse's gigantic hits just fine but I really didn't care much for this album at all. Thanks anyway!?
Well this was the first time to sit and listen to a whole album of hers. And to tell the truth, I had to stop it twice. So, three times to get through one album. That's not good. The last listen was from Amy Amy Amy, and to the end, and was a good set of songs that I really enjoyed. Here's something telling from Amy herself: In a 2004 interview with The Observer, Winehouse expressed dissatisfaction with the album, stating: I've never heard the album from start to finish. I don't have it in my house. She named the album FRANK, from her admiration of Frank Sinatra. Ya think she would have sung a couple of his songs on this.
Strong intro, impressive song. The album kind of dies half way through. Still very enjoyable. 3 stars
What a beautiful voice. I don't care much for the lyrics, but her voice is just so special. Gone too soon.
Not for me. Once again massively talented but not really my style. Love to mix it up but nothing really grabbed me
very much music I could see playing in a very fancy hotel lobby. Tbh I was kind of suprised that I didn’t like this more, she has a lovely voice but I don’t think this style of jazz is really for me ig. I still think it was pretty good though, just not something I would return to unless I was really drunk and feeling super good about myself, other than that I don’t think I would listen again. Pretty good, but not for me unless a second listen really changes how I feel. 3.000001/5
Sort of "meh" when you compare it with 'Back to Black'...just kind of fails to distinguish itself from the mass of mediocre music from that specific time.
PERFECT ALBUM
Bof
voice is obviously insane, back to black is better
The songwriting is not quite as refined as in Back to Black but the talent is already there.
Great voice and sadly a somewhat tragic life. Not a go to album for me but I appreciate what she is doing. ❤️
17. septembar 2026. 19.35h nisam kao amy-head ali ovaj album me je ono potpuno zaobisao, mislim da znam mozda jednu pjemsu i to kao slucajno sa instagrama, drugi album (koji je isto na ovoj listi) mi je blizi srcu eenyweez, i dalje prilicno dobar album best: (there is) no greater love, in my bed, mr magic (through the smoke)
