Reviews (page 2 of 13)
Incroyable
Favorite, the first album I already had
Amazing loved it
Spectacular from start to finish. An ever so slight modern edge to what otherwise is a classic soul album. Vocals are great. The lyrics and the delivery of them just drip with sexuality - which is done in an interesting way. I'm surprised I haven't heard this album before given all the accolades. I think I just assumed the praise was in the same vein as Aguilara, who is vocally talented, but musically terrible.
This definitely sounds sacrilegious but kinda sounds like RAYE. It's so sad that she died so young and only had THREE albums.
I really liked this one. It has grit.
my queen
This was amazing like actually a masterpiece!!! Best song is Amy Amy Amy
A great album, of remarkable quality for a debut by a 19-year old. It would be too sweeping to say that this is the ‘light’ Amy album and Back to Black is the dark and depressed one (there’s some downbeat moments here and the latter isn’t completely free of humour), but I do enjoy that we get to see a funnier and livelier side to a great artist. It’s probably at its best in the opening five tracks, which show a pop/RnB influenced sound- all are some of Winehouse’s best. The rest is probably slightly too long, but still has some standouts (‘In my Bed’), and some showcasing of her jazz background (‘No Greater Love’). As some of the reviews point out, some of the lyrics aren’t exactly ‘The Feminine Mystique’. But given Winehouse’s youth and experiences of relationships, don’t come to this for well-thought out social commentary. Instead, appreciate the genius of a generational, but tortured, artist.
just Absolute in every sense.
Escucharla siempre es un placer
Great album
it's ok. songs sound like lounge, r&b, or hip hop. enjoyed the lounge sounding songs the most.
So endlessly tragic. So much she could’ve done, just based off of this alone.
I love Back to Black a little more but this is still a 5 star record for me. So good!
Superbre premier morceau. Moody's mood For Love, quelle douceur
Listened to in Spain which drink so nice servesa - the combination was 5/5. What an incredible debut album from a generational talent got too early. Love
quality
I was expecting to like this album, but ended up loving it
A perfect album that I can't believe I've never listened to before. So moody, so sultry, so fun to listen to.
Better than the other album on this list from her.
5/10
Really great. I had a different image of what Amy would’ve sounded like so to hear her jazzy voice and all the bossa nova-reggae inspired pieces was surprising.
One helluva set of pipes. Could have been a great one. Too bad she burned out.
She was tremendous. So much character behind every word. A jazz vocal sensibility rarely heard in popular music anymore.
SO glad I got this one recommended, I've been meaning to listen to Amy Winehouse for a while and this gave me the perfect excuse. She truly has a powerful voice, and "Stronger than me" is one hell of an intro song.
amy winehouse's debut record hasnt exactly been forgotten by history, but its easy to see how its a bit narratively Incomplete. slathered in contemporary neo soul and trip hop production flourishes a few years after they were exciting cutting edge, the record's relative slickness and modernity could be argued to be holding back the full force of her Mean And Messy personality. back to black, which i got much earlier in the project, creates something a lot more distinctive by placing her in a retro phil spector-inspired context, allowing for a fuller aesthetic unity between her as a performer and the rest of the music in a way that has gone on to define her legend. however, for as great as the material on that record is, its particular realization of a Retro production style employed some mixing and mastering that was really physically taxing for me to push through...so in a bit of an upset, i kinda vastly prefer this debut! cuz honestly, im not sure i even believe the objections i started off by raising here...the style here is now every bit as much a pleasurable "retro" style as back to black was relative to its release date, and some really sticky and imposing sounds create an atmosphere that i think works perfectly well on its own. and even if it didnt, the sheer fact that i feel more Physically Comfortable Listening To It just gives me a lot more access to generational artist and performer amy winehouse, who sketches a character only she could play this well with such vividness that its impossible to replicate. engrossing and dirty and so so moving. here's to the ladies who lunch.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Amy Winehouse has such an incredible voice.
When Amy died from alcohol poisoning it was in a period of my life where I was pretty regularly drinking too much, and while it’d be a few years before I really toned it down it was a wake up call for me. I wasn’t a fan of her music at the time and really only knew the song Rehab, but I knew she was an immense talent and that we’d lost a lifetime of potential output from her. At 27 years old she still had 50 years or more to create amazing art… with talent like her’s that’s likely several masterpieces that we’ll never hear. I’ve listened to Back to Black at least a few times but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Frank until now, and boy have I missed out. It’s basically a modern Ella Fitzgerald album, and is performed at an incredibly high level. Her voice was truly singular and amazing, and the songs are clever and well crafted. It reminds me of a soul/pop version of Exile in Guyville. I listened to it 3 times to make sure, but it became clear to me that this is a masterpiece and very worthy of 5 stars.
She was 19 when this came out. Incredible to say the least.
Okay, I guess I get it now. I truly wasn't a fan of Amy Winehouse back in the day because she was just a bit overplayed. I sort of understood then why she was so popular, but then she would always be a mess. It never sat right with me how we just watched and let her derail. I've often heard that this album was so much better than Back in Black anyway, and it's certainly true. This is why we loved her so much. If I'd heard this before the hype, I'd hold it up on a pedestal. I had somehow never listened to it, but I'm glad I have now.
I have never really been the biggest Amy Winehouse fan, but I am now just realizing that’s because I didn’t listen to enough Amy Winehouse! Wow! She has a beautiful voice. She’s so talented and musical. This album is unbelievable. It actually bangs holy crap. Perfection.
They're best album .
Her voice is just captivating. Mellow album but with a good energy too.
Beautiful album, I like it even more than Back to Black because it sounds a little more raw. I realized that I always had people in my life that would introduce me to really good music. I think I first heard this album on vacation with my friend and her parents, good memories!
Not as good as Back to Black, obviously but Fuck Me Pumps is one of the best songs ever. 4.5/5. I usually round down but for Amy I’m rounding up!
It’s so unusual to have such a great album with no radio hits. Great stuff!
Amy is like the White Lauryn Hill to me and I love it
God, I love this. She was SO good. I could listen to this literally all day.
I don't even need to listen to the whole album to rate this one. I was in the right demographic at the right time to enjoy this first time around. The voice, the production, it's just all perfect. Such a talent, such a shame. Vale Amy.
So fun fact: I actually listened to Amy Winehouse's entire discography a few years ago because Lupe Fiasco released a concept album about her. I never really listened to her before that, beyond the hits, but this album is very good and I'm happy to listen to it again.
Oh Amy, why did you have to die so early
2000s Jazz by one of the greats. Absolutely stunning voice and delivery. Some great songs, if not hits.
Never listened to this before. I love it
ANOTHA BANGA absolutely obsessed w amy's voice. virgo queen ily 11/5 favorite song: intro/stronger than me
Amy Winehouse's debut cements her as an already flourishing soul artist right out of the gates and still impresses me nearly 20 years later. She has such a one of a kind voice that can switch between gentle and harsh so quickly and smoothly. Frank is in my opinion the better of her two albums and I love how free the music and Amy feels on this entire project. She was just able to let loose and make songs that scream "It's Spring." The length flies by and each track adds such a good feeling to yourself and whatever is happening around you, this album always puts a smile on my face. I wish we could hear more of Amy, but with what she has given us I am certain she has embedded herself into a legendary status of music.
Incredible album
great listen
I didn’t realise how impactful this album was on me. I knew every word and it still feels as important to me as it did when I was 15 listening for the first time. I have seen reviews of Amy’s music and it’s always prefaced with “what a shame”, “what a waste” and I find that really dismissive of what she did in her life, even if it was short. In the song Brother she says “she needs a friend, not a sob story” and I think it sums up Amy’s life well, even if she didn’t know it. This album doesn’t make me feel sad, like I think it has been marked as because of how young she died, but instead amazed. What a feat for an 18 year old to write something so relatable. It’s storytelling is great, it’s cheeky sound feels young but exciting, which is exactly what the lyrics speak about. So gorgeously done. Could listen to again and again, and probably will the rest of the day.
she's the best

Pozytywne zaskoczenie.
I LOVE AMY this album was so good! so much variety and she sounds incredible, honestly may have enjoyed it more that back to black but she honestly was just a mastermind ahead of her time miss u amy
Three words. Fuck. Me. Pumps 👠
I discovered this post B2B but ended up playing it quite a bit more - it's jazzier sound is closer to my heart and allows Amy's vocals to soar a little more. One I still return to, particularly for You Send Me Flying and Amyx3.
Sent me down a rabbit hole, Amy will be missed
IMMACULATE WHY DIDNT I KNOW ABOUT THIS BANGER ALBUMMM😮💨😮💨😮💨
Her debut was her best- most varied and compellingly candid from start to finish.
ist halt amy winehouse
Não me conformo com quem diz que o Back to Black é o melhor álbum dela. Frank é impecável, é sofisticado, é outro nível.
I Heard Love Is Blind is so powerful musically
What a voice!
I want to know why this album isn’t that popular like Back to Black. I had never heard any of the songs until today, but I was pleasantly surprised. I get how it can be uneven, but that wasn’t a problem for me. It only seems sadder thinking about what Amy Winehouse could have been.
Man what a voice, and lyrics of vemom and heartbreak. It’s hard to find songs i didnt like, or that didnt fit into place, its so good, and its still not as good as Back To Black. What a talent. 5.0/5.0 Best Song: October Song
Amazing and smooth and snappy
Loved it!
Yes this album is great, UNDERRATYED. I listened to it before but it got better with the 2nd listen. This album needs more love. This reminds me of the New York City and i love the jazz and drums included in this album, it kinda reminds of trip hop but jazz you know k think. It’s so soft and sweet to listen to, classic. los up lifter. The vibes are all there, every song is good i really can’t choose one song to talk about that’s all i have to say. 10/10 this album is underated and over shadowed by back to black. RIP AMY WINEHOUSE
The concept of the outro was pretty cool. I needed some good jazz
Absolutely exquisite! Loved Amy Amy Amy
she was just perfect and any time I think about her it kinda makes me wanna cry.. this entire album is just perfect she was so talented her voice was perfect and the instrumentals are all so strong, whether it's the soft piano and jazzy drums and flute and sax of No Greater Love or the awesome early-2000s beat of In My Bed, it's just all so good idk
I honestly never gave Amy Winehouse a fair listen in the past, my main memory of her music was "Rehab" playing 24/7 on every radio in 2007. This album is great, Amy had amazing vocals!
I think I've only ever listened to back to black before. This album was a lot better than I had expected, and I was surprised by just how good her vocals are.
so so good.
Love love love this album
Easy 5. Her voice is amazing and this album is just so easy to listen to for anyone.
Love
I loved it. The voice of Amy is very soulful and touching, especially knowing what happens to her after. The sound and instrument are amazing and my favorite songs are Stronger Than me, Moody's Modd For Love, In My Bed and Amy Amy Amy. I have no reason to not put 5 stars :).
10/10 im crazy and a bad woman you dont want me
I think people reviewing this and pointing out the naive double standards about it not being "feminist enough" forget that it was written by a literal teenager in the early 00s. Please.
Great album, love Amy Winehouse and may she rest in peace
Timeless perfection! 5 *

What a lovely ride with Amy.
This album is such a fun mix of musical genres, incredible vocals, and some incredibly upbeat songs with dark lyrics. Basically, my favorite kind of music! Her voice was incredible. I cannot overstate that. And the fun mix of jazz, blues, boss nova, and hip hop really sucked me in. Each song felt familiar and completely new. Familiar topics from a new perspective. Truly a great album and wonderful talent lost too soon.
Riesiger Fan vom 2. Album aber das erste nie gehört. Grandioses Album. Auch super produziert!
Amy, the star you are Best = In my bed Skip = Know you now (that damn metronome)
Groove and vibe for days. The blend of retro styles and current productions is done really well. Listened through a few times, recording this at 19 is impressive to me. If this doesn't make you want to dance I don't know what will. Dig the Scottie dog on the cover.
LOVE Amy <3
She was amazing. I love listening to her music
One of a kind, frankly. Funny, vulnerable, full of pathos. The great Amy Winehouse on full display.
It might be a bit of a generous rating, but the album as a whole positively surprised me. Some of the songs on here i really, really like so it upped the overall rating. I quite enjoyed this one
This one was so good. The whole album was amazing. I never had listen to Amy Winehouse begore and this was a good surprise. I wanted to drink and smoke listining to this. There are not even a single bad song... It stary well and ende well. Thata said, i still dont think this is something i will listen again often, but maybe somedays in specifc situations. Good album. I would say 4.5/5, but since there is no way to do, i'll put 5 stars.
Total banger in every single way, best song In My Bed 9/10
The original name of this album was going to be Len! After Houmous & Chutney legend, Len Houmous. Len veto’d it as he wasn’t sure if Amy would make it to the top. He didn’t always get it right! 4.7 4/16 Fuck Me Pumps
I can see myself listening to her music more often and wish there was more of it.
Always loved this; always will
Love Amy Winehouse.
Everybody has heard the song Rehab, and when I checked out the track list and didn't see it, i was expecting the worst. But holy hell this album is great. I don't know why I was sleeping on the rest of her work, but now I need to go out and find some vinyl of her. Gone too soon.
Excellent. Even for not being my kind of music, it's clearly a quality record. Gone too soon. RIP Amy.
Faixa favorita: Stronger Than Me Letra favorita: Fuck Me Pumps Como me senti: reflexiva, emocionada Resumo geral: Soul-jazz moderno com letras espertas e uma voz inconfundível.
Super enjoyable, poor girl.
90/100. Confident, clever, and emotionally rich, the album stands as a fully formed introduction to her talent, one that showcases not just her incredible voice, but her honesty, wit, and deep love for jazz, soul, and hip-hop. Amy Winehouse may be remembered most for Back to Black, but Frank is where her genius first crystallized. As an opening statement, it’s remarkable.
They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no no no!! Great album
Of course we all know Amy Winehouse, but I've never given her stuff a listen for myself so I'm pretty excited about this. Listened to the first 9 songs on the bus into work, so I'm just now sitting down to write about it, but I'm blown away so far. Obviously the vocals are implied when it comes to Amy, and they're outstanding, but the musicality of the instrumentals has complimented her voice outstandingly well. This album is so jazzy, so bluesy, and just so good. The horns are outstanding. The intro track was a great way to start the album and immediately had me hooked. "F*** Me Pumps" is a classic and for good reason, as is "Take the Box", but I haven't come across a single skip yet. "In My Bed" caught be by surprise in the best way possible by sampling "Made You Look" by Nas. I don't know why but I just never thought Amy would be the type to sample a beat from a rap song, man was I wrong. She embodies rap in so many ways, most of all because she's real. The pain in her voice is unfortunately real. Her social commentary is real. The heartbreak is real. And her taste in instrumentals was clearly real as well. Like I said, the vocals speak for themselves, but I also just don't have the words to speak for them in a way that does them justice. Her range, her control, her willingness to experiment with delivery, her voice, it's all so captivating. Without a doubt one of the most talented vocalists of the 21st century. This album is outstanding. Maybe I'm getting a bit liberal with my 5s or maybe I just like music. But Amy gets a 5.
I was blown away by this album. Just completely amazing.
really nice sound and iconic voice. I would listen to this again a bunch
I’m teetering on a 5, this just so hit the spot for me tonite. Just the perfect accompaniment to a dreamy, post-rainstorm twilight walk, the lights smeary and romantic. I love the jazz and bossanova stylings here, perhaps even more than her retro-60s Motown of “Back in Black.” And her unique and powerful voice is captivating. She was a singular talent, and I miss her.
Beautiful vocals. Incredible lyrics. Icon!
Dead but good
Kick ass.
I love Amy! One of my dearest vinyl albums. Stronger Than Me is such a good opening track and the rest is also so vulnerable and musically fresh.
love Amy
I really love this album, I think it might be better than back to black but it's so close
Intersting
Amazing debut. So thoroughly mature as a songwriter and a great voice and sound to match. This and Back to Black are bona fide classics.
Pues muy jazzy.
What more can I say about Amy. I love her, I've always loved her. My late sister loved her, my best friend loved her and we used to smoke bowls inbetween shifts at Starbucks together and thats when I really connected to the tunes. She's much more than a small girl with a big ego like someone here said. She's a Teenage girl thrusted into stardom at the hand of a heavily demanding and manipulative father. Albeit supportive his rigorous expectations from age 14 onward lead to a longing to escape through drugs and sex. Frank is her autobiography in going against life's hardest moments at 19 through the lense and stylings of a crooner. Amy has a certain patoís to her vocal delivery, where it remains crooner esque yet exotic. Her influences are clear when she blends late 90's hip hop and r&b with soulful new life, the reggae melody was robust and charming. I mean people who don't look beyond the surface are missing the whole legacy. Amy is my Beatles, she can do no wrong. We didn't get enough of her. And that's the worst part.
pour one out for r kid
It's wild how I've considered Back to black one of my fave albums for like 10+ years, but I haven't listened to any of her other music I think?? I'd give this 4.5 but I'll go for 5
AMAZING
pleasant music - brilliant voice
I love Amy Winehouse. This is right in my wheelhouse. Amy Winehouse, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu...all of them making music at the same time, a great time for women in R&B. Know You Now is a great song. I know Fuck Me Pumps is the hit, but I don't understand why, it's the weakest song on the album so far. I mean, I get it. It has Fuck in the title and talks about a woman having sex but the lyrics are like what a 16 year old would write. I could do without all the split songs. Just make two or cut the coda. In My Bed is a jam. Help Yourself is probably my favorite Amy Winehouse song. I wish someone would get the rights situation sorted out so this could be streamed in the US. Amy, Amy, Amy is a fun song. Followed by a stupid Outro and two post-Outro songs for some dumb reason. I'm so glad streaming is killing the hidden track. Great album, underrated album.
Good Songs: Intro / Stronger Than Me, You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, Know You Know, Fuck Me Pumps, Moody's Mood for Love / Teo Licks, (There Is) No Greater Love, In My Bed, Take the Box, October Song, What Is It About Men, Help Yourself, Amy, Amy, Amy, Outro, Brother, Mr Magic (Through The Smoke) Mid Songs: I Heard Love Is Blind Bad Songs:
Such a distinctive voice - I had not listened to this album before. I really only knew her earlier one Back in Black. She's incredible, so sad what happened to her.
Jazz is hit or miss for me, but when it's Amy Winehouse it's pretty much an instant hit. I've only heard music from the Back to Black album prior to this, so I was pretty interested to see what kind of artist Amy was when she first hit the scene. I was not disappointed. The fact that she was a teenager when she conceptualized, wrote, and sang this album is insane to think about. What Is It About Men is almost haunting when you think about the course of her life, leading all the way to the end. Amy Winehouse is an incredible talent. Phenomenal vocalist & just so raw. There's not another kind of album out there like this one, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single song.
My first time listening to an Amy Winehouse album and it was a treat! It’s like someone picked her up from the 60s and dropped her off in the early 2000’s. Such a classic sound but she made it keen for the times. Really an enjoyable listen, no complaints!
I normally don't like soul/jazz music, so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this album. I thought her voice, her singing style, and the backing music were good on most of the songs. This is a pretty good debut album, but I'm hoping for more in Back to Black. My favorite songs from this album are "Stronger Than Me" and "In My Bed". 4/5 Edit: I've been consistently listening to a bunch of songs from this album, so I feel like it should probably be a 5.
Fantastic album, fantastic voice.
Favourites: You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, Fuck Me Pumps, Moody's Mood For Love / Teo Licks, In My Bed, Take The Box, What Is It About Men, Help Yourself, Amy Amy Amy
amazing 9/10
While not as famous as her other album, this is still pretty damn great. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
I’m at a 5. My initial reaction upon seeing this pop up was just some surprise that this album was here – I figured “Back to Black” would cover the bases pretty well in terms of Amy Winehouse & her style, and going back to her debut might just retread the bases a bit. After all, she IS just a jazzy singer evoking the 50s & 60s with more modernized production, right? Go ahead and slap me across the face for that one – we’ve got a fucking R&B album here clearly inspired by the Lauryn Hills & Erykah Badus of the world. This thing could not be farther from old Frank Sinatra, cited often as the inspiration for the album title. Amy Winehouse is NOT just a jazzy singer evoking the 50s & 60s like that; she’s inspired that way vocally, sure, and that inspiration comes through a number of times on the album, but production-wise? This is just a slightly updated take on 1996 through 1998 in the black R&B / girl group scene, with some of that 50s/60s flair, though used more so as an additive to enhance the 90s production, in a way that probably felt fresh (if slightly dated) for 2003 and feels oddly modern in 2025. Lyrically, I really like this album; there’s a full spectrum of ideas on display here in terms of how to portray femininity, and while some of it hasn’t aged as well (specifically the gender dynamics at play on “Stronger Than Me”), I think a lot of this album is fully fair to Amy’s experiences up to this point in her 19 (19!!) year-old life. Some of this album is flirtier, especially on stuff like “You Sent Me Flying” or “Amy Amy Amy”, some of this is sadder, like “Take the Box” or “October Song”, but I find most of this album to just be confident, in a way that’s not really revolutionary, but just openly welcomed for 2003. Take a track like “Fuck Me Pumps”, celebrating *those* types of people who show up at the clubs, framing it in a way that’s not necessarily shaming anybody, and instead just putting their style to power, even admitting it wouldn’t be as fun without them. The flipside is sort of true on “I Heard Love is Blind”, which is a track that takes flimsy excuses for cheating to a comical level, yet still portraying it with a sort of klutzy confidence that you can’t help but admire the audacity of, especially since the track is played for laughs. This album runs through a spectrum of confidence, both in its flirtier & defiant ways, and Amy Winehouse portrays the confidence through her vocals incredibly well. Obviously, her vocals are the star of the show here; even at 19, she’s belting these out, and her voice would only get even stronger by Back to Black. I can’t complement them enough. Really, I’m just immensely surprised that this album feels so evocative of something like “Miseducation”, without all of the spiritual elements behind it. “Back to Black” only painted a corner of a picture of Amy Winehouse for me that I simply boxed her into, and that’s entirely my fault. This is an album that aligns with my musical sensibilities so, so much, and to hear Amy Winehouse doing it THIS well is a welcome surprise, and an awesome find for me. I think it’s a breezy 53 minutes (45 if you choose not to listen to the bonus tracks, which are both really good), and I’m just kicking myself for questioning this thing’s presence on the list to begin with. It isn’t as good as “Back to Black”, but that’s designed to be a timeless record due to its style. I think it’s just as enjoyable at its best points, and overall, you can’t go wrong here. This is a 5, and an easy one at that. At worst, a 3 if you really fucking hate R&B. P.S.: "In My Bed" is insanely good. Standout of the album for me.
Amazing voice, perfect vibe all along, so nice, smooth, a bit hunmoristic and moody. I love this album.
fab
Such a unique talent. Gone too soon. Some people sing the blue. Some people sing soul music. But they just sing it. Winehouse is soul Winehouse is blues
10/10 Favorite: You Sent Me Flying/Cherry
Just Great !
Debut or not, I think Ms. Winehouse sounds amazing on this album, and as somebody who had only really listened to (and enjoyed) her best-known songs, I'm glad to have discovered more of her music, and look forward to listening to Back to Black, if the project should so suggest - or even if not.
The intro is solid. Not enough people do intros any more, and when they do they're usually just awful. The outro is also on point. Great stuff. I've not heard this one before. I like "Back To Black", but this is a great debut album and for me is possibly better. I'm sure that's an unpopular opinion. I just think this is less tainted and less smeared by the additional struggles she had after this (yes I know she was always troubled). "Back To Black" has more of her top hits, but "Rehab" IMO is not great nor is the title track, perhaps both overplayed, "Valerie" is not as good as the original (yep, sorry). "You Know I'm No Good" is my favourite on "Back To Black" which is much more like this album style. Her voice is incredible, and song writing ability at the age she released this is nothing but amazing. "(There Is) No Greater Lover" is one of my favourites, but there are a lot of brilliant tracks including (but not limited to); "Fuck Me Pumps", "Brother", "What Is It About Men", "Help Yourself"... It's jazz/hip-hop with soul, a touch of melancholy and vintage vibes. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Interesting to listen to this point in her life where her style is still being refined into what we remember her for today.
Una delicia de escuchar. Qué buenos temas nos tendría guardados.
From the perspective of several decades later it's tempting to view the jazz standards era through the safe, gauzy Hays Code lens of black-and-white GI balls and *White Christmas* et al. So it's arresting when Winehouse steps up with a centerpiece song called "Fuck Me Pumps" about the travails of being a single woman inhabiting both the "hunter" and "game" roles, precisely because it serves as such an important correction to the narrative - *it's always been this way*. Not just on that song but throughout, she does what every great artist is supposed to do - however many chords and the truth. This album reclaims jazz as the grimy, lascivious, transcendent stuff your grandparents were warned about. And if you've ever wondered why the loss of Winehouse was such a tragedy, "In My Bed" is your answer.
Mood
Gone too soon but great music and I love the lyrics and variety
Amazing voice, unique sound, memorable songs
I know this album very well. Amy is PERFECTION always. The vocals, the lyrics, the music… 10/10. No notes.
I’ve never heard Amy’s debut album. I loveeeeee her voice. I love the jazz influence on everything. She’s so distinctive. You could play any song of hers and almost anyone could tell you it’s her. I love how brash her lyrics are. They’re so straightforward and funny and honest. I also love her having two songs after the outro. I feel like I know her through her songs. She’s right there with me. The trumpet and the sultry beats with the intoxicating bass. All these blend and are the perfect complement to her voice. This album is the perfect blend of 2000s sexy club vibes and 1950s jazz classics. Especially with the songs mostly being 2 in 1 and all the ambiance noise. The slight sound of people chatting or glasses moving. The sound of the night sky with crickets. The sound of a record playing in the background. It’s all so immersive. When she sings I’m instantly transported to a smoky, swanky hole in the wall night club. And she’s as captivating as you imagine.
Absolutely great album back to back
Great album
Love this album; no skips
This is not going to be a fair review because I LOOOOVE Amy Winehouse! Such a tragic ending to such a promising life. She was a real artist and a person that had such feeling in her music. So unique and special. RIP Amy.
I love her voice and the instrumental. I love the overall feel of the album.
An incredible album. The vocals, the instruments, the lyrics and the techniques are amazing
This kind of alt sound with her voice is and will always be a fave. She should avoid dudes in the future with cool tshirts tho
Alright, let's hear 1. Stronger than me. Good one liked 2. Gonna like pero remember that the one I liked is Cherry! 3. Know You Now. Mid. 4. FuckMePumps. Nice. Liked! 5. I Heard Love Is Blind. Ay maldita! jajajaja, maldita maldita. Yes, you cheated. Letra de mierda, buena música. 6. Kinda boring. El ending calidad. 7. Gorgeous, loved it! 8. Very nice! Good harmonies, loved it. 9. Take the Box. Beautfiul too. Liked!. 10. Kinda boring but liked. 11. Kinda boring. 12. Help Yourself. Very nice! Liked! -Solid shit so far! Liking a lot of tunes- 13. AmyAmyAmy. Like a lot! 14. Outro... 15. Brother. Good one, didn't love it. 16. Entretenida, liked. 4.8! Te doy el 5 porque eres tú, Amy. RIP, mi vida.
She’s the GOAT!
Very good
Wasn't sure about it at first, but it really grew on me. I think I understand the appeal of Amy Winehouse now!
So so good. Heard of Amy, never listened further than back to black (the song), and this was such a pleasant journey, wow
I'm smirking just from reading the album's title; both an ode to Sinatra and a turn of phrase to describe Amy's direct, succinct demeanour. But then I quickly remember this is one of my favourite albums, since I was a teenager. Opening cheekily with 'Stronger than me', she beckons for a real man, but she's stuck with a 'lady-boy'. This LP is packed with so much personality, the things she does with her voice and even the live perfomances we got from this era reveal Amy as a true musical great; each performance so nuanced from the previous and in such a unique style that cannot be replicated. My personal favourite is 'In My Bed', I discovered this LP in my teens and this is the song I always go back to. The best artists make their gifts seem effortless and Amy is just that; a vessel for her gift and we are so lucky to have received it.
Fabuloso
Just great, what a debut album. Amy sounds wise beyond her years, the production is timeless and the songs catchy and memorable. Such an easy listen, loved this
A MASTERPIECE 💜
increible
not as good as back to black but man that voice is velvet buttah
So good! Each sign better than the last
This is what I was looking for in this style, modern Sinatra style music mixes with soul and R&B. Back to Black is too polished for my taste, but this album really has the vibes of what I hoped Amy could do. The instruments, her voice, everything, it’s so easy to listen front to back.
I mean come on.
Amy Winehouse is one of the GOATS, great fucking album
Love this album, the voice of Amy is amazing 5/5
YESSSSSS
Amazing effort for a debut album at 19. I don't really understand the hate towards Amy Winehouse or this record. I thought it was pretty decent. Great production, amazing vocals. I didn't feel as if there were bad tracks. Just a few that were less great compared to others. Can't give it anything less than a 9/10. I'll be sure to pick it up if I see it in a record store. Fav tracks: In my bed, Stronger Than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, Least fav tracks: October Song
Masterful and unique
Amazeballs
Amy Goathouse, gone too soon.
Never really listened to Amy Winehouse outside of the hits but this is great
It wasn't at all what I expected. I guess pretty much the only Amy Winehouse song I had heard before was "Rehab" so I was surprised by how jazzy the album was. And it was a good surprised... I really enjoyed it. I can now understand why there is so much love for her music.
This was an awesome album. Added to library & will be listening to more Amy Winehouse
Loved it. Felt like being at a place like the Green Mill in Chicago with a smaller intimate performance with some edge.
She's the goat man idk what to say it shoulda been me
Sophisticated, sensual, and fun. An all around great listen with plenty of tracks to either sit back and relax to, or vibe with. Great jazzy performances and absolutely stellar vocals. A great way to spend an hour
Stunning. No notes.
Brilliant and genre bending. Can’t believe I had never listened to it before. Will go into regular rotation. Just excellent
Why have I not listened to this album before.
I didn't realize I was going to become an Amy Winehouse fan today. Growing up I wasn't exposed to much of Winehouse's music. I knew of Rehab and her tragic alcohol withdrawal death. But that was the extent of it. This album features a strong vocal performance and a very obvious Frank Sinatra inspiration. The imagery in the lyrics are provocative. The instrumentation is elegant and a little jazzy at times. It's quite often artists are described as being ahead of their times. I think in Amy's case the opposite is true. Amy would have absolutely slayed in the 50s/60s where this music style shined. Instead she came up in an era of music where her competition/peers were making songs like Beyonce's Crazy in Love and Ciara's Goodies. It was all about the high tempo R&B/hip hop dance songs back then and Amy didn't get the respect that I now see she deserved.
One of my first ever CDs. Love this album and Amy Winehouse so much!
WOW!!! This is an ALBUM! Some real bangers I've never heard before. She has such a larger than life *presence* with that voice. Jazzy and sultry with an attitude. Brutal lyrics though. Stronger Than Me as the opener is such a statement. Fuck Me Pumps brings the drama. Tragic to have lost such an artist so young.
Not as astounding as Back to Black, but still pretty great. Amy Winehouse's debut is able to seamlessly blend a diverse group of sounds and genres, and it is a tragedy that we got so little music from her during her brief life. What a voice!
straight 10, i love jazz and i actual never heard amy winehouse, and now im a fan
Flawless album except for song Amy. A love diary of a insecure girl madly in love with some dude. This is a love book to someone that most of us have never felt this kind of sickening love. Production is amazing, sampling superb, sound clear, jazz, doo wop, gospel all in one its simply a masterpiece
Such an amazing talent. I miss her every day.
I dont really know why im surprised by how much I like this bc I love back to black but ive never listened to frank and like ofc this is good bc its Amy Winehouse duh but anyways yeah 5
The goat. Most songs don’t hit quite as hard as stuff on back to black, but the talent is still there and there are a few fantastic tracks
genius
Exceptional. Stunning. Life changing. Miss her.
j’adore we miss you every day
Mhmmmm Amy Amy Amy! Utterly damning, complex messaging (Stronger Than Me, I can't even) and somehow a one-of-a-kind sound to match
Her voice, attitude, and pain pierce my soul. Unfun fact, I had to wear sunglasses leaving her doc because I couldn’t stop sobbing.
unreal how have I never heard this record before
Banger after banger I love when women sing. 5 stars
First time I hear any of her songs
First time listening to this album, I always liked Amy Winehouse. Wish we would have had her around longer. Hard to believe she was only 20 on this album, so jazzy, mature and cool.
Solid album. Lots of soul in that voice. It’s like a modern take on an old school jazz lounge singer act. The band was great too. No complaints from me.
Gone to early in life she had so much more to give musicly
So good!
The vocals are very sweet, and quite distinctive. The instrumentation has a really nice and jazzy feel to it. The album feels like it came straight from the heart.
9/10
This album has been in my car for years
Retro style Amy with her characterful voice.
Wow I do not remember this album being so good. For me, it almost rivals Back to Black. This is basically a 4.75 album, so fuck it. It gets 5
A great debut album. I like every song on this album
Amy es todo. Es la más grande de todas.
I just love Amy. All of her songs have catchy melodies and meaningful lyrics
I've heard Amy Winehouse songs but never really sank my ears into her music before this project. OK. I'm hooked. I'm a fan! A brave, beautiful voice gone too soon. Love that she starts off this album giving her man a good talking to (Stronger Than Me). Great synth bass in this song and love how that trumpet just lays it out so matter of fact at the end of the song ...gives me chills. She has a great timeless vibe. Complex. Dramatic. Sexy. Great horns & acoustic guitar mix on I Heard Love is Blind... and then the flutes come in & I'm swooning. (okay. as much as I love horns, I have a weakness for some flute jazz.) Amy's music has a way of finding all my weak spots and pulling no punches. No Greater Love (again w the flutes... *swoon*). Her music is powerful without being forceful. Sensational grooves. Sometimes reminds me a little of Lauryn Hill (only groovier). Amy was a great one. Amy Amy Amy. It's complex, dramatic music with such great instrumentation and creative song writing that makes me want to listen to it over and over.
I LOOOOOVE Ms. Winehouse. Her voice is just so beautiful. Gone too soon. This is not my favorite album of hers, that would be Back to Black (duh), but this one has some bangers too. Stronger Than Me is classic and Fuck Me Pumps is iconic. Mr. Magic is the funky jazz jam sesh I love from her songs and it pairs so well with her voice. She was such a talent. Overall rating: 5/5 Favorite Song: Fuck Me Pumps Least Fave Song: Amy Amy Amy
9/10
fun! reminded me of Eloise. Musically a nice mix of jazz / neo-soul that feels accessible -- really great to listen to. Lyrically, often snarky and judgemental. October Song was esp fun, I like lullaby of birdland
fuck me pumps!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😍
Beautiful.
Less overplayed than BACK TO BLACK. RIP
Top
Still so sorely missed. Shame she’s gone
Back to Black is definitely her masterpiece, but this is a damn fine album as well. One of the all-time great vocalists!
Amy dejo la vara alta, muy alta
UGHHHHHHHH!!!! (in a good way) every time i hear this album it's even better than i remember...just so many interesting things happening here. right off the bat opening with a song that says "are you gay?" and then calling him a ladyboy...and of course fuck me pumps is theee internalized misogyny anthem of all time ("without girls like you, there's no nightlife / all those men just go home to their wives" YEOWCH). like what a crash entrance into music for this to be the first thing people ever hear from you!! but also just musically there's so many interesting production choices -- In My Bed and What Is It About Men have such a sleek (hip hop inspired maybe?) 90s sound which is sooo different than the classic jazz sound of Amy Amy Amy or You Sent Me Flying. so many tender moments too (No Greater Love, Cherry, I Heard Love Is Blind)...like the range is just crazy on this album. every listen gives me new favorites and new thing to notice. I LOVE YOU AMY <33333
Pure class, innit? And what a debut. Not many better. The record's a total blast, fun and tart and sassy. One wonders what Carole King would make of "Fuck Me Pumps" or "I Heard Love Is Blind," a right proper 21st-centurty cheatin' song. It's at once fresh and new and respectful of tradition (love the hat tip to Sarah Vaughn), soulful in the classic sense and savvy in the modern way. "Mr. Magic" is a fantastic closer – just seals the deal. Cool and excellent throughout. Rounding up slightly, if only because of one's own sense of loss of what might have been.
While I don't dislike Back to Black, this album made me realize what all the Amy Winehouse fuss is all about. The songwriting and playing is peak neo soul, while still not sounding like a copy of the Soulquarians or any others. And Winehouse singing is brilliant, full of soul and charisma. This will definitively be revisited!
a negyedik hallgatásnál tartok and its counting 😁❤️
A true modern classic. Haven't listened to the whole thing in order maybe ever. Feel like I've been missing out. Amy was sort of a joke culturally at the end of her life but Frank is at the zenith of her talent and she (and the Dap Kings) are amazing here. No notes. Guess I gotta Five-Star this one.
She's just amazing, so much passion and feeling in her voice. Iconic songs in the album
Just a stellar album. Such a shame we lost her so early!
I will actually listen to this again!
Done
excellent, imagine being her, astounding
Amy is a winner. 5
I liked it.
Brilliant vocalist gone too soon.
Great jazz record. Amy Winehouse’s vocals were amazing. Favorite song: Mr Magic
Yes.
Amy Amy Amy! 🎶
Loved it. Jazzy vibes!
The jazz in here is sung to perfection by Amy winehouse. I will never stop recommending this album. The songs speak for themselves. You already know what I’ll rate it.
One of my favourite artists of all time
Calm
Very good
This is incredibly smooth
Genio
LONG LIVE AMY WINEHOUSE EVERY SONGS A BANGER
Great album from great artist - one that I did not hear before. Nice to be reminded of her insane vocal! Great instrumentation as well - well played, but at the same time lets the vocals shine. Not the deepest lyrics, but they feel heartfelt and real.
I liked the whole album so much that I don’t want to add any one track to my playlist, 5/5
Giving me nostalgia even though this is my first time listening to her
Even though this one, her first album, is not the best she already show the power and musical skills of her voice here. So for me this is clearly a "5".
Own
Classic and very influential, despite its own obvious derivativeness. (is that a word?)
This was extremely enjoyable, I love the instrumentation, and her voice. Listened to this 3 times back to back then listened to all of Back to Black, her second album. She really was taken too early from us. I'd love to see how she would've progressed in her career.
Why didn’t anyone tell me Amy Winehouse fucks so hard?!? I’m definitely gonna check out the rest of her discography. Great vibes and this is exactly what I come to music for!
Great album! The amount of musicians is staggering. I was surprised to see on the wiki that Amy winehouse didn't like it and didn't like the production saying "everyone was idiots" but she didn't elaborate. Great songwriting, tons of unique sounds, great singing!
Timeless.
Incredible. I may like it even more than Back to Black.
Great singer and artist. I think I prefer Back to Black to this one, I hope it made the list too. A bit jazzier than I remembered/ expected.. Favorite song is “What is it about men “
What an absolute treat, her voice is so amazing and these songs are incredible
We really lost a great one. I could listen to her sing anything.
It's a great introduction to Amy Winehouse as well as the new modern jazz style.
Never ceases to amaze me how talented and unique Amy Winehouse is.
Jazz-pop fusion. I had heard a couple of the songs on this album before but never the entire thing. Amy Winehouse is an incredible vocalist -- one of my favorite singers of the last 40 years. Her pitch and control are perfect, her tone is pure and unique with a blend of brashness and vulnerability, and phrasing and timing are truly original and swing seamlessly between jazz and hip-hop. She turns just about any song into an experience. This collection of tunes is good but not outstanding -- it almost doesn't matter. Stronger Than Me is probably the best of them; Know You Now and Fuck Me Pumps and also excellent.
Transcendent. Genre, time, mood. Name a characteristic, and Amy will reinvent it.
want on vinyl
I’ve loved her style since the first time I heard her, which unfortunately was after she’d already died. Her nod to Grover Washington was especially fun.
9/10
Brilliant. 5
KILLER ALBUM
A timeless talent, gone too soon. I’ve never heard an album quite like this one.
She was amazing. This is a first-time listen for me and just so blown away by her talent.
This album fucking rocks
I wasn't familiar with any of the songs on this album. I think her big US breakout was after this one. That said, this was a stellar pop/jazz fusion album. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Amy had a great voice.
Love Her!!
Great album
Molto figo è da 5
One of my favorites. So good.
Lindo. A voz dela é algo de extraordinário. Maravilhoso. As letras dela eram muito boas também. Loved everything!!!
I’ll definitely listen to this again. What a loss for the world! Timeless voice.
Such a fantastic voice, such a waste.
LOVE!!!!!
